Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

A Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 tutor in Ras Al Khaimah works with your child live over video, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. Before the first lesson there is one thing worth settling. 0500 is only one of four English qualifications a school in the emirate might enter your child for, and the nearest three are marked against different criteria entirely. This page puts them side by side, then goes through what 0500 itself rewards and where its marks are lost.

  • Paper 1 Reading and Paper 2 Writing each carry half the 0500 grade
  • Lessons run live over video, never at a Ras Al Khaimah address
  • A free trial lesson first, with the tutor your child would keep
  • Tutors mark and discuss your child's own writing, never produce coursework

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

Start by checking which English paper your child is actually sitting

Parents in Ras Al Khaimah often arrive at this page certain of one thing and wrong about another. They are certain their child needs English help. They are frequently wrong about which English qualification the school has entered them for, and that single fact changes everything a tutor should be doing. Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language carries the code 0500. English as a Second Language carries 0510 or 0511. Literature in English is 0475. Pearson Edexcel's International GCSE English Language A is 4EA1. Four qualifications, four mark schemes, four different kinds of lesson.

The confusion is not carelessness on anyone's part. A statement of entry lists codes, not plain descriptions, and a Year 10 report usually says only "English". In a smaller school cohort the same teacher may take a first-language group and a second-language group in adjoining periods, so the vocabulary at the dinner table is identical whichever route a child is on. The first useful thing a tutor can do for a family in Al Nakheel or Al Hamra Village is read the statement of entry and say out loud which syllabus is in play.

It matters because the reward structures diverge sharply. On 0500, a reader who cannot handle implicit meaning in an unseen text will stall in the low grades however neat the writing is, because Paper 1 Reading is half the qualification. On 0510, accurate controlled language earns credit that 0500 simply assumes. On 0475, the texts are set, studied for two years and quoted from memory in the examination. Preparation that works for one is close to useless for the next, and a tutor who never asks the question will spend a term teaching the wrong thing well.

Ras Al Khaimah adds a second complication. The emirate's private sector is small, and its schools are regulated by the Department of Knowledge, which under the federal framework approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods in the emirate. A small sector means fewer parallel groups, fewer specialist English teachers per campus and more mixed-ability classes. Families in Mina Al Arab and Al Dhait regularly tell us the same thing: the school is attentive, but there is one teacher covering both the first-language and the literature entries, and a child who needs close work on inference is not going to get forty minutes of it a week.

That scarcity is the honest argument for one-to-one online work rather than a search for someone nearby. A specialist who has marked hundreds of 0500 summary answers is not necessarily living in the emirate. Over live video she is available on a Tuesday at six, with your child's own script on screen and the annotation visible to both of them. The rest of this page is the detail: what each paper asks, how the three nearest alternatives differ, where the marks actually go, what the market charges and how the Cambridge series counts backwards from the paper your child will sit.

At a glance

  • 0500 is First Language English; 0510 and 0511 are English as a Second Language
  • Paper 1 Reading is 50% of 0500, so reading skill caps the grade, not handwriting
  • A 9-1 graded variant of First Language English exists; ask which code the centre enters
  • Literature in English 0475 is a separate qualification with set texts, not an extension of 0500
  • Ras Al Khaimah private schools are regulated by the Department of Knowledge

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Ras Al Khaimah families meet English assessment at four points: the lower secondary years when reading habits are set, the IGCSE entry itself, the post-16 choice between A Level and the Diploma, and the Ministry of Education equivalency check that follows. Here is what each stage asks of a student's English.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary English

The three years before the IGCSE entry, where the reading habit that decides a 0500 grade is either built or missed. Lower Secondary English assesses reading, writing, speaking and listening against Cambridge stage objectives, with optional Checkpoint tests. Nothing here appears on a certificate, which is precisely why it gets neglected. A student who reaches Year 10 able to summarise an argument in their own words rather than copying phrases has already banked most of what Paper 1 will later test.

In Ras Al Khaimah the Year 9 to Year 10 handover is often where a parent first hears that English is a concern. Cohorts are small, so a child can sit comfortably in the middle of a mixed group for three years without anyone diagnosing a specific weakness in inference. Checkpoint results, where a campus runs them, are the earliest honest signal available.

0500Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language

Two years of work assessed by two written papers of two hours each, weighted equally. Paper 1 Reading presents unseen texts and tests comprehension, summary and analysis of a writer's language and effects. Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition asks for one piece written to a specified audience, purpose and form in response to reading material, then one original composition chosen from descriptive or narrative options. A separately reported speaking component is available and does not alter the overall grade.

This is the entry most English-medium campuses in the emirate use for students whose schooling has been in English. Centres in Ras Al Khaimah sit the qualification in the Cambridge June series overwhelmingly, with a smaller November cohort covering retakes and private candidates. Confirm the code on the statement of entry with the exams officer rather than assuming from the class name.

0510Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language

The alternative entry for students who use English confidently for study but not as a first language. Assessment covers reading and writing, listening and a speaking test, and the mark scheme credits accurate, appropriate language in a way 0500 does not. 0511 is the variant where the speaking component counts towards the overall grade rather than being separately reported. Universities and the UAE equivalency process treat it as an accredited subject, but it is not interchangeable with 0500.

A meaningful share of Ras Al Khaimah candidates sit this route, and the decision is usually taken by the school on the basis of prior attainment rather than by the family. If your child is on 0510 and wants 0500, that is a conversation with the head of English in Year 9, not something a tutor can change in Year 11.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level English and IB Diploma English A

Both post-16 routes assume the reading skill that 0500 Paper 1 measures. A Level English Literature works through set texts with unseen comparison; IB Diploma English A Language and Literature adds an individual oral and a comparative essay on non-literary and literary texts. Students arriving from a strong 0500 cope with the volume; students who scraped the grade on strong writing alone tend to struggle first with unseen analysis under time pressure.

Post-16 English provision is thinner in Ras Al Khaimah than in Dubai, and some families commute south or move campus for it. That calculation is worth doing in Year 10, not after results day, because it changes which English entry and which second English subject make sense now.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is the Cambridge family a Ras Al Khaimah English candidate actually sits inside, with the codes as they appear on a statement of entry. Every one of these is a distinct qualification with its own papers; none is a tier or a sub-level of another.

English as a First Language (0500)

Single tier

Two two-hour papers weighted equally. Paper 1 tests reading of unseen texts including a summary task and analysis of language and effect; Paper 2 tests directed writing against a brief plus one composition. Marks are lost most often on summary selection and on analysis that describes a technique without explaining its effect.

First Language English, 9-1 graded variant

Single tier

Some centres enter the numerically graded version of First Language English instead of the A*-G code. The teaching, papers and skills are the same; only the reported grade scale differs. Ask the exams officer which code appears on the statement of entry, because grade conversations with a tutor are meaningless until that is settled.

English as a Second Language (0510 and 0511)

Core assessment with speaking variants

Reading and writing, listening and speaking. The mark scheme credits range and accuracy of language explicitly. In 0511 the speaking test contributes to the overall grade; in 0510 it is reported separately. Students moved from 0500 to this route often improve fastest on the listening component, which rewards a trainable exam technique.

Literature in English (0475)

Single tier

Set texts in poetry, prose and drama, studied over two years and written about in closed-book or open-book conditions depending on the component chosen by the centre. Rewards close textual knowledge and quotation under pressure. Frequently sat alongside 0500, which is why families assume it is the same subject. It is not.

World Literature (0408)

Single tier

A smaller literature entry built on texts in translation alongside texts in English, with an essay portfolio element in some routes. Rarely offered in the northern emirates, but worth knowing about if a campus mentions it, because its assessment pattern differs from 0475 in ways that change how revision is spent.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

Research, argument and written communication assessed through an individual report and a team project rather than a timed essay paper. Students who find 0500 Paper 2 directed writing difficult often do well here, and the reverse holds too. The transferable skill is evidence selection, which pays back directly into the 0500 summary question.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Listed because English and maths are the two entries that gate most post-16 and university routes, and because a family buying one subject of support usually needs to decide about the other in the same month. Extended is the tier that keeps A Level and Diploma mathematics open.

History (0470)

Single tier

Source-based questions that reward exactly the inference skill 0500 Paper 1 tests, applied to documents instead of literary extracts. Students who are weak at reading between the lines show it in both subjects at once, which is often the clearest diagnostic a parent gets.

Economics (0455)

Single tier

Thirty-mark multiple choice paper plus a structured paper worth seventy per cent of the grade. Included here because its eight-mark evaluation questions demand the same disciplined paragraph construction as 0500 directed writing, and support in one frequently lifts the other.

Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Case-study questions where command words control the mark ceiling. Another subject where a student who writes fluently but does not answer the question asked loses marks in the same pattern as on Paper 2 Section A. Worth pairing in a single tutoring plan if both grades are soft.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families in the emirate buy 0500 support, with what each is genuinely good for. All of it is delivered online, one to one, over live video; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visits are a service offered only in India.

Weekly one-to-one across Year 10 and Year 11

A fixed hour each week over the two years of the course, with the tutor following the school's own scheme of work and marking one piece of extended writing a fortnight. This is the shape that fixes reading rather than patching it, because inference and summary selection improve with repeated low-stakes practice and not with a revision sprint.

  • One annotated piece of the student's own writing returned every fortnight
  • Paper 1 unseen practice from the start, not saved for the final term
  • Reading log agreed with the parent and reviewed monthly
  • Session notes after each lesson naming the specific objective worked on

A focused block before the June or November series

Eight to twelve sessions aimed at the two papers rather than at the subject. Typically four on Paper 1 technique, with timed summary and analysis questions marked against the published objectives, and four on Paper 2, splitting directed writing from composition. Suits a student whose reading is sound but whose timing and question-reading are costing grades.

  • Timed papers sat under exam conditions and marked within 48 hours
  • Separate drills for summary selection and for language analysis
  • Composition planning practised to a four-minute limit
  • A written list of the student's three recurring mark-losing habits

Diagnostic and second opinion

A single session, or two, where a tutor reads a recent mock script and the school's comments and tells you plainly what the problem is. Some families buy nothing else, because the answer turns out to be a reading-volume problem a tutor cannot solve in an hour a week. We would rather say that than sell a weekly slot that will not move the grade.

  • Mock script read line by line against the assessment objectives
  • A clear statement of whether the issue is reading, writing or timing
  • Recommendation that may be no tutoring at all
  • No commitment beyond the session booked

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

0500, 0510, 0475 or 4EA1: which English your child is actually entered for

Four qualifications are in play for an English-medium student in Ras Al Khaimah, and the differences between them are structural rather than cosmetic. Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language, code 0500, assumes English is the student's main language of education and tests reading of unseen material alongside original writing. Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language, 0510 and 0511, assumes English is an additional language used confidently for study, and credits accurate and appropriate language use in its own right. Literature in English, 0475, is a study of set texts. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A, 4EA1, is a different board's first-language qualification with its own paper structure and an available coursework route.

The table below sets out what each one is and how to confirm which applies to your child. The single document that settles it is the statement of entry issued by the centre, which lists syllabus codes against each subject. A school report will not tell you. Nor will the textbook, since several of the widely used coursebooks cover both 0500 and 0510 in one volume with the distinction buried in the contents page.

Getting this wrong costs a term. A tutor preparing a 0510 candidate with 0500 Paper 1 inference practice is working above the mark scheme and ignoring the listening component that the student will actually be examined on. A tutor preparing a 0500 candidate with 0510 grammar drills is tidying language that the first-language mark scheme largely takes for granted, while the reading half of the qualification goes untouched. Both students make progress at something; neither makes progress at the thing being assessed.

The decision itself is normally the school's, taken on prior attainment at the end of Year 9. It can be discussed, but it is a Year 9 conversation with the head of English, not a Year 11 one. What a tutor can do at any stage is confirm which route is live, read the relevant mark scheme and teach to it.

First language or second language: the decision a school makes for you

Families sometimes read the second-language route as a lesser qualification. It is not a tier of 0500, and treating it as a demotion leads to bad choices. Both are accredited IGCSE subjects. Both count towards the five accredited subjects the Ministry of Education requires on the British track for secondary certificate equivalency. Universities in the UAE and abroad accept either as evidence of English attainment, though a specific department may ask for a particular grade or a separate language test.

What differs is what earns marks. On the second-language route, a candidate who writes accurately, with appropriate register and controlled structures, is rewarded for exactly that. The listening component is a trainable skill with a clear technique: predicting answer types, tracking signposts, managing the gaps between questions. Many students lift that component by a grade with a handful of focused sessions, which is the fastest available improvement in the whole English family.

On 0500 the reward sits elsewhere. Half the qualification is reading unseen material, and the mark scheme asks for selection, inference and explanation of effect. A student who writes beautiful prose and cannot explain why a writer put a particular verb in a particular place is capped. This is the single most common misdiagnosis we see from Ras Al Khaimah families: the child is articulate, the parent cannot understand the grade, and nobody has looked at the reading paper.

There is a practical consequence for how a term of support is spent. A 0510 student who needs the overall grade moved should usually start with listening and with the directed writing task, because both respond quickly. A 0500 student in the same position should start with the summary question and with one analysis paragraph a week, because both are slow-building and leaving them to the final term is how a predicted grade becomes a disappointment in August.

03

Paper 1 and Paper 2: what each one is worth and what it asks

0500 is assessed by two written papers, each two hours long and each worth half of the grade. There is no examined coursework in the standard route, which means there is nowhere to bank marks in advance and nothing to carry into the examination room except technique. For a parent weighing whether support is worth buying, that is the relevant fact: every mark is won in four hours in one series.

Paper 1 Reading presents unseen texts and asks a small number of questions across them. One task requires comprehension and selection of material and includes a summary written in the candidate's own words. Another requires analysis of a writer's language and the effects it creates. Another asks for an extended response to reading, in which the candidate writes in a specified form or voice using material from the passage. The common thread is that nothing can be prepared in advance, so what is being examined is a habit rather than a body of knowledge.

Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition is in two sections. Section A gives reading material and a brief: a specified audience, purpose and form, with marks split between reading the material accurately and writing effectively. Section B offers a choice of composition tasks, descriptive and narrative, and awards marks for content and structure and for style and accuracy. The composition choice is the single most consequential two minutes of the paper, and the most common error we see is a student picking the title that sounds interesting instead of the one they have practised the shape of.

Mark allocations within each paper change between syllabus versions, so the current syllabus document for your child's examination year on cambridgeinternational.org is the thing to check rather than a figure from an older coursebook. What has held steady is the fifty-fifty split between the two papers and the two-hour duration of each.

The coursework portfolio alternative, and why most centres here do not use it

Cambridge offers a coursework portfolio as an alternative to the second written paper in First Language English. Where a centre runs it, the candidate produces a set of assignments during the course, internally assessed by the school and externally moderated by Cambridge. It is a legitimate route and it suits some students very well, particularly those whose writing is strong but whose examination timing is poor.

Most centres in the northern emirates do not offer it, and the reason is administrative rather than pedagogical. A coursework route requires trained internal assessors, a moderation submission, and an authentication process in which the school certifies that the work is the candidate's own and produced under supervision. In a small department running three or four English entries at once, that is a real staffing cost. Ask the exams officer directly; do not assume from the presence of a portfolio folder in the classroom, which is often just coursework-style practice feeding into the examined route.

If your child's centre does run the portfolio route, the tutoring changes shape and the boundaries tighten considerably. A tutor may teach the form, work through published exemplars, discuss structure in the abstract and help a student understand feedback the school has given. A tutor may not draft, rewrite or edit a portfolio piece to completion, and should not be reading successive drafts of a live assignment at all. The centre is certifying authorship; anything that compromises that certification puts your child, not the tutor, at risk.

Our position on this is fixed and we would rather state it early than be asked. On a coursework centre's portfolio, support happens on practice pieces that will never be submitted, built on the same skills. On an examined centre's Paper 2, support happens on timed practice marked against the published criteria. In both cases the work that reaches Cambridge is the student's own, written without a tutor in the room.

05

Five places 0500 marks go missing, and what each looks like on a script

  • Summary written from notes with the passage closed, not paraphrased line by line
  • Every analysis point to name the effect, not only the device
  • Extended response kept inside what the source text actually supports
  • Composition title chosen on practised shape, not on apparent ease
  • Full papers sat to time at least three times before the series

After reading enough mock scripts from this emirate a pattern becomes visible, and it is almost never a vocabulary problem. The first leak is the summary. The task asks for the candidate's own words, and a student who has been praised for years for quoting accurately will do exactly the wrong thing: reproduce phrasing from the passage, lose the credit for selection and run over length while doing it. The fix is mechanical and takes about four sessions: read, close the text, write from notes, then check back only for accuracy of content.

The second is analysis that stops at identification. A script that says the writer uses a metaphor, names it correctly and moves on has earned very little. The mark is in the effect: what the image makes the reader feel or picture, and why that serves the writer's purpose at that point in the text. Students arrive at this habit honestly, because device-spotting is easy to teach and easy to test in class, and it has a ceiling that most of them hit around a grade C or a 5.

The third is the extended response to reading, where candidates write in a voice from the passage and quietly abandon the passage's content. Marks are awarded for using the material, developing it and staying inside what the text supports. Invention that contradicts the source is a double loss: it fails the reading objective and reads as careless. The fourth is the composition choice, made in panic, at the end of a long paper, by a student who has practised narrative all year and picks the descriptive title because it looks easier.

The fifth is simple timing. Two papers of two hours is a long sit for a sixteen-year-old, and a script that runs out of time on the last task loses more than the task is worth, because the earlier answers were also written at the wrong pace. We time every practice paper and show the student the clock, because a student who has sat four full papers under conditions does not panic in the fifth.

06

The Cambridge series counted backwards from the paper

Cambridge International runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Every examination centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge is explicit that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone; it states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after the wrong zone timetable was used. That sentence is worth reading twice, because it is the parent's responsibility as much as the school's.

The deadline that surprises families is the entry deadline, which sits months before the paper. Take the two series a Ras Al Khaimah candidate can actually sit. For the June series the examination period runs from May into June, the centre's final entry closes in the spring, forecast grades go to Cambridge in the weeks before the first paper, and results reach centres on Cambridge International Direct in August. For the November series the entries close over the summer, the papers run in October and November, and results follow in late January. The February and March sitting that a search result may show you is offered in India only, so its deadlines describe a series your child will never enter. Different series carry different dates and the exact day is printed on the statement of entry, but the shape holds either way: entries close months, not weeks, before the first paper.

What this means for a Ras Al Khaimah family buying English support is that the useful decisions are made much earlier than instinct suggests. A decision in September about which English route and which tier of a paired subject is a real decision. The same conversation in February is mostly about damage control, because entries have closed and the room for manoeuvre is technique and timing rather than qualification choice.

The table below is the shape of the year read backwards. Confirm every date against the official Cambridge timetable for your centre's zone and examination year, published on cambridgeinternational.org, rather than against this page.

What 0500 support costs around Ras Al Khaimah

Start at the cheap end, because that is where most families start and where the disappointment usually happens. Budget online tutoring in this market runs from around AED 45 to AED 150 an hour: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52, both for online sessions typically delivered by university students or generalist teachers. For a Year 8 reading habit that is defensible. For 0500 Paper 1, where the whole task is a trained examiner's eye on an unseen text, a generalist is being asked to do something they have not done, and the hour is pleasant and ineffective.

One step up, a qualified subject tutor working online sits in the AED 150 to 300 band; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A named IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. At the top, premium named or examiner-led tutors are advertised well beyond that, with BartyED at AED 650. Monthly packages circulate too: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits.

The in-home comparison is the interesting one for a family in Mina Al Arab or Al Qusaidat. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors are quoted from AED 200 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel. The premium over an online rate is not buying better teaching. It is buying a commute, and in the northern emirates it is buying it from a much smaller pool: the tutors willing to drive to Al Rams for a single hour are the tutors who happen to live nearby, not the ones who have marked a thousand 0500 scripts.

All of these are market figures published by other providers, dated to this market in 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price. We do not publish a rate card on these pages, because the honest answer depends on level, subject and how many sessions a family actually needs, and because a figure printed here would be out of date before your child's series. Book the free trial, see the tutor teach, and get the number in writing afterwards. For context on the household budget around it, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package; the northern emirates set fees through their own authorities.

English in the Ministry of Education equivalency count

Families planning a UAE university route need to know how the Ministry of Education treats a British-track certificate, and English sits at the centre of it. On the British track, a student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which means the five have to come from elsewhere in the timetable.

That detail has a direct consequence for subject choice. One competitor page ranking for these queries states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced requirement is five accredited subjects excluding Arabic and Islamic education. If a family has planned a timetable around the wrong number, the error surfaces at attestation rather than at results, which is the worst possible moment to find it.

The American track is governed differently and is worth knowing about because many Ras Al Khaimah families hold both options open. There, English proficiency is demonstrated by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those are published figures for that track and do not transfer to the British one.

Two cautions. Equivalency is a process run by the Ministry of Education and the emirate's attestation authority, not something a tutoring platform performs, guarantees or accelerates; verify current requirements on moe.gov.ae before making a decision that depends on them. And no International Baccalaureate points threshold appears in the source we are able to cite, so any figure you see published for the Diploma should be checked against the Ministry's own page rather than trusted from a tutoring site, including this one.

Academic honesty when the assessed skill is writing

English is the subject where the line between teaching and doing the work is easiest to blur, because the deliverable is a piece of writing and improving writing feels like editing writing. It is worth being explicit about where the line sits, both because a centre authenticates coursework and because a family paying for support deserves to know what they are buying.

A tutor can teach form, structure and technique. A tutor can work through published exemplar scripts and mark schemes, mark practice pieces that will never be submitted, annotate a returned mock, explain a comment the school has made, model a paragraph on a different title, and run timed practice. A tutor can also tell a student, bluntly, that a piece is not good enough and why, which is frequently the most valuable hour in a term.

A tutor does not write, redraft or edit to completion any piece that will be submitted for assessment. On a coursework centre's portfolio that is an authentication breach and the consequence lands on the candidate. On an examined route it is simply useless, because nobody will be in the room during the paper. The services in this market that advertise finished assessed work are selling something that puts a student's qualification at risk, and we say so on every page rather than compete quietly alongside them.

There is one practical rule we give families that settles most questions before they arise. If the piece of writing will be seen by an examiner or a moderator, a tutor's hands stay off it; everything the tutor touches is practice. If a student cannot produce a piece of that quality alone in two hours with a blank page, the support has not worked yet, and the right response is more practice rather than more polish.

Where we tutor

Where in Ras Al Khaimah 0500 candidates are, and what that changes

English support requests in the emirate cluster in a handful of communities, and the practical constraints differ between them: when the school day ends, how long the run home takes, and which campus the household is attached to.

Al Nakheel

The densest residential area for English support requests in the emirate. Households here are usually attached to city-side campuses with a short run home, which makes a 4.30pm or 5pm session genuinely workable rather than theoretical.

Khuzam

Mixed provision with British-curriculum campuses close by. Requests from Khuzam skew towards Year 10 rather than Year 11, which is the better month to start: a full year gives time to rebuild reading habits before Paper 1 practice begins.

Al Dhait North and South

Large family households, often with two or three siblings on different syllabuses at once. The common ask here is one tutor who can see a Year 9 and a Year 11 in consecutive slots on the same evening, which online scheduling accommodates easily.

Al Hamra Village

British and international provision sits on this side of the emirate. English requests here more often involve a literature entry alongside 0500, and the first job is usually separating the two revision workloads rather than merging them.

Mina Al Arab and Hayat Island

Newer communities with a longer run to the city-side campuses. Parents here consistently report the drive as the reason an in-home arrangement collapsed after a few weeks; a video slot at a fixed time removes the variable.

Al Marjan Island

A smaller, mostly expatriate population with families who travel during term. Sessions that can follow a laptop to another time zone for a fortnight matter more here than anywhere else in the emirate.

Al Mairid, Al Uraibi and Julphar

Older city districts with established Indian-curriculum and mixed campuses. A good share of 0500 interest from this cluster comes from students who moved into a Cambridge entry mid-course and have ground to make up on unseen reading.

Al Qusaidat and Al Rams

The northern strip, where the choice of a nearby tutor is close to no choice at all. Families here were the clearest evidence we had that proximity-based matching does not work in the northern emirates.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Inland households with longer commutes in both directions. Sessions tend to settle at 6.30pm or later here, and weekend mornings are the slot most frequently requested for extended writing practice.

City-side campuses entering Cambridge English

Southern coast and British provision

Campuses on the Al Hamra side more often run a literature entry alongside First Language English and continue into post-16 English. Students from this cluster tend to need the two workloads separated and sequenced rather than taught as one subject.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the syllabus code, not just the subject

The first message we need is the code from the statement of entry: 0500, 0510, 0475, 4EA1 or the numerically graded variant. If you do not have it, send a photograph of the statement of entry or the last report and we will identify it. Everything downstream depends on getting this right.

  2. 02

Send a recent script, whatever state it is in

A marked mock, a returned essay or a timed practice piece tells a tutor more in ten minutes than a half-hour conversation can. We read it against the published assessment objectives and come back with a view of whether the problem is reading, writing, timing or volume, and say which of those tutoring can realistically move.

  3. 03

Meet the tutor in a free trial lesson

A full session with the tutor your child would keep, not a sales call with a coordinator. Watch how your child is asked to justify an answer. A good 0500 teacher will spend most of the hour on the text rather than on the student's prose, which is often the first surprise for a parent.

  4. 04

Agree a slot that survives the school week

Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time and fit around the school day and the run home, which in Mina Al Arab or Digdaga is the deciding constraint. Pick a time that works on an ordinary Tuesday, not on an optimistic one, and keep it fixed; the fortnightly marking cycle only works if the slot holds.

  5. 05

Review against the papers, not against a feeling

Every four to six weeks we look at a timed paper marked to the criteria and compare it with the last one. If the numbers are not moving, we change the approach or say the hour is not worth your money. If no specialist is free at your preferred time, we tell you rather than substituting a generalist.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We identify the syllabus before selling the lesson

The distinction between 0500, 0510, 0475 and 4EA1 is the first thing established, because teaching to the wrong mark scheme wastes a term whatever the tutor's quality. No competitor page in this market opens with that question, and it is the single most useful thing a Ras Al Khaimah parent can take away from this page.

The scarcity problem is answered honestly

Ras Al Khaimah has a small private sector and few specialist English teachers per campus. Searching for a 0500 specialist within driving distance of Al Rams is searching a very short list. Live video replaces that list with a national one, which is the actual argument rather than a convenience claim.

Writing is marked, not admired

Every fortnight a piece of the student's own extended writing comes back annotated against the published objectives, with a mark and a reason. Parents receive the annotation, not a summary of it, so you can see whether the gap is reading or expression and judge progress yourself.

Figures are attributed and dated

Every AED rate on this page is another provider's published figure for this market in 2026, named and dated. We publish no invented statistic, no self-reported rating and no grade promise, because an unsourced number on a tutoring page is a liability rather than a selling point.

The academic-honesty line is written down

A tutor teaches, marks practice and explains feedback. A tutor does not produce assessed work. On a coursework centre's portfolio the centre authenticates authorship, and the risk of a breach lands on the student, so the boundary is stated on the page rather than negotiated in a message thread.

Online delivery is stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Every rate comparison on this page is built on that, not around it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Is my child sitting Cambridge 0500 or English as a Second Language 0510?+

The statement of entry issued by your child's centre is the document that settles it, because it lists syllabus codes against each subject. A school report will usually say only English. The coursebook will not help either, since several widely used texts cover both syllabuses in one volume. If you cannot find the statement of entry, the exams officer can confirm the code in a minute. Ask before buying any support, because preparation for the two routes diverges sharply: 0500 is half unseen reading, while the second-language route credits accurate language use and includes a listening component that 0500 does not have.

What is the difference between 0500 and Literature in English 0475?+

They are separate qualifications, not two halves of one subject. 0500 tests reading of unseen material and original writing, so nothing can be learned in advance. 0475 is built on set texts studied across two years and written about in examination conditions, closed or open book depending on the components your centre offers. Many students sit both, which is why families assume they are related. For tutoring the consequence is practical: revision for 0475 is text knowledge and quotation, revision for 0500 is habit and technique, and merging the two workloads usually means the unseen reading gets squeezed out.

Does the 9-1 graded code change what my child studies?+

No. Where a centre enters the numerically graded variant of Cambridge First Language English rather than the A*-G code, the syllabus content, the papers and the skills assessed are the same; only the reported grade scale differs. What matters is that you know which one applies before having any conversation about target grades, because a target of a 6 and a target of a B are not the same sentence. The code is printed on the statement of entry. If a tutor or a report talks about grades without that being settled, the conversation is built on sand.

How is the 0500 summary question marked, and why does my daughter keep losing marks on it?+

The summary task asks for relevant content expressed in the candidate's own words, and both halves carry credit. The commonest failure is a student who selects accurately but reproduces the passage's phrasing, because years of praise for careful quotation have trained exactly the wrong reflex here. The fix is mechanical rather than conceptual: read the passage, close it, write from brief notes, then check back only to confirm the content is right. Four or five supervised repetitions usually move it. Overlength answers are the second leak, and they are almost always a symptom of the same habit.

My son writes beautifully but his English grade is stuck. What is going on?+

Almost always it is the reading paper, and almost always nobody has looked at it. Paper 1 is half the qualification, and its marks come from selection, inference and explanation of a writer's effects, none of which a strong prose style supplies. An articulate student with a weak reading habit will sit around a middling grade indefinitely while every adult around him is puzzled. Ask to see the mock reading script rather than the composition. If the analysis answers name techniques without explaining their effect, you have found the problem and it is fixable in about a term.

Does 0500 have a speaking test, and does it affect the grade?+

Cambridge makes a speaking component available in First Language English, and in 0500 it is reported separately rather than contributing to the overall grade. In the second-language family the position differs: 0511 counts the speaking test towards the overall grade while 0510 reports it separately. This matters when a family is deciding where to spend limited preparation time. On 0500 the speaking component is worth doing properly for its own sake and for university applications, but an hour spent on it is an hour not spent on the two papers that carry the whole grade.

Can essay writing really be taught properly over video?+

It is one of the subjects where video is a genuine upgrade rather than a compromise. The student's script sits on a shared screen, annotated live, with both people looking at the same sentence and the same mark scheme. Nothing is passed across a table and nothing is lost on the way home, because the annotated version is saved and sent. Timed practice is sat in the student's own study space, which is where the real paper will feel least like a performance. What video cannot supply is reading volume, and no format can; that part is a household habit.

How many weeks of 0500 support does a Year 11 student in Ras Al Khaimah usually need?+

It depends which of the five common leaks is costing the marks. Timing and composition choice respond to six to eight sessions, because they are technique. Summary and analysis take longer: expect a term of weekly work with one marked piece a fortnight before the change holds under examination pressure. Reading volume is slower still and is not solved in a tutorial at all. We read the mock script first and say which category your child falls into, because selling a weekly slot for a problem that needs a reading habit would waste your money and your child's evenings.

Which composition should my daughter choose in Paper 2, descriptive or narrative?+

Whichever shape she has practised, not whichever title sounds more interesting on the day. That choice is made in the last hour of a long paper by a tired sixteen-year-old, which is why it should be decided months earlier and rehearsed. Most students are structurally better at one than the other: narrative rewards shape and restraint, description rewards controlled focus and precise observation. We establish which one she is reliably stronger at, practise that form repeatedly, and agree a rule in advance so the decision in the examination room takes seconds rather than minutes.

Does English First Language count towards Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track a student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five, so those five must come from the rest of the timetable, and an English entry normally forms part of them. One ranking competitor states six subjects are required; the sourced figure is five. Verify current requirements on moe.gov.ae, because equivalency is the Ministry's process and not something a tutoring platform performs.

What does Cambridge English tuition cost for a family in Ras Al Khaimah?+

Market rates in this country, published by other providers in 2026, run from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour at the budget online end, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit inclusive of travel, and AED 200 to 450 and above for an IGCSE or A Level specialist. Monthly packages of around AED 799 for eight online sessions circulate too. Those are other people's figures, cited for context. IB Gram does not publish a rate card on these pages; book the free trial, watch the tutor teach, and get a number in writing afterwards.

Is 0500 enough preparation for A Level English or IB Diploma English A?+

It is the right foundation, and the part that transfers is the reading. Both post-16 routes assume a student can analyse unseen material under time pressure, which is exactly what Paper 1 measures. The students who struggle are the ones who reached a decent 0500 grade on strong writing while the reading half stayed weak; that gap closes slowly and it closes in the first term of a two-year course, when there is least room for it. If a student is heading for post-16 English, the reading paper is the thing to fix now rather than later.

Can a tutor mark my child's practice essays without breaking Cambridge rules?+

Yes, and that is the core of the work. A tutor may mark practice pieces that will never be submitted, annotate a returned mock, work through published exemplars and mark schemes, model a paragraph on a different title and explain the school's own feedback. What a tutor must not do is write, redraft or edit to completion any piece that will go to an examiner or a moderator. The practical rule we give families is simple: if an examiner will see it, the tutor's hands stay off it, and everything the tutor touches is practice.

Our centre runs the coursework portfolio route. Does that change the tutoring?+

It changes the boundaries rather than the skills. Where a centre offers the coursework portfolio as an alternative to the second written paper, the school internally assesses the work, Cambridge moderates it, and the centre certifies that the work is the candidate's own and produced under supervision. Support therefore happens on practice pieces built from the same skills, never on successive drafts of a live assignment. Confirm with the exams officer that the portfolio route is genuinely being used, because portfolio-style folders often turn out to be practice feeding into the examined route.

What happens if no 0500 specialist is free in the evening slot we need?+

We tell you, rather than putting a generalist in the slot and hoping. Ras Al Khaimah families often want 5pm or 6pm on Gulf Standard Time, and those hours fill first. The options are usually a different evening, a weekend morning for extended writing practice, or a wait of a week or two for the right tutor. If none of that works for your household, we say so and you lose nothing, because the trial lesson is booked before any payment. A convenient tutor teaching the wrong mark scheme is worse value than no tutor.

Do English lessons continue through Ramadan and the shortened school day?+

Yes, with the timing moved rather than the work paused. Shortened school days free up afternoon slots that are impossible during the rest of the year, and some families move sessions to after Iftar instead. Ramadan often falls close enough to the summer series that stopping for a month costs more than it saves, particularly for a student who needs weekly marked writing to hold a new habit in place. We agree the revised slot in advance so the fortnightly marking cycle keeps running, and reading practice continues at a lighter volume.

Settle the syllabus code, then book a trial

Two things are worth doing this week. Find the statement of entry and confirm whether your child is on 0500, the second-language route, 4EA1 or the numerically graded variant, because every sensible decision depends on it. Then send us a recent marked script, in whatever state it is in. We will read it against the published assessment objectives and tell you plainly which of the five common leaks is costing the marks, and whether weekly one-to-one work over live video will move them or whether the honest answer is a reading habit instead. The trial lesson is free and happens before any payment, with the tutor your child would keep.
