Cambridge IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

A Cambridge IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 tutor in Ras Al Khaimah is a narrow ask, and that is the whole problem: the syllabus sits on very few timetables in the northern emirates, so the person who can teach differentiation, binomial expansion and trigonometric proof to a sixteen-year-old is rarely within driving distance of Al Nakheel or Mina Al Arab. IB Gram matches your child to a 0606 specialist and teaches one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school day.

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

Why 0606 is the hardest IGCSE to staff in the northern emirates

Additional Mathematics 0606 is not a harder version of 0580. It is a different qualification, sat in the same series, that reaches into material most students do not meet until the first year of AS. A candidate is expected to differentiate products and quotients, integrate to find an area, prove a trigonometric identity, expand a binomial, work with matrices and vectors, and move between radians and degrees without pausing to think about it. Schools enter students for it as a bridge into AS Mathematics 9709 or into IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, usually after a strong grade in 0580 Extended.

In Ras Al Khaimah the practical difficulty is supply rather than difficulty. The emirate's private-school set is small and concentrated: British and international provision around Al Hamra and the southern coast, Indian-curriculum and mixed provision through Al Nakheel, Khuzam and Al Uraibi. A cohort of twelve or fifteen students taking an optional extension subject does not justify a dedicated specialist on every timetable, so 0606 is often taught in a lunchtime group by the teacher with the most free periods, or taken by a student who is largely working alone from a textbook.

That is why remote teaching matters more here than it does in Dubai. A family in Al Dhait is not choosing between six local 0606 teachers and an online one. The honest comparison is between an online specialist and nobody, or between an online specialist and a general maths tutor who will teach the 0580 content your child already knows. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, which is also the reason a Ras Al Khaimah student can be taught by a 0606 specialist at all.

This page is written against the emirate as it actually works: the Department of Knowledge as the regulator, the Cambridge June and November series as the sessions local candidates sit, and the Ministry of Education equivalency rules that decide what the certificate is worth afterwards. It sets out the syllabus content, the question types where marks disappear, the market rate in AED, the entry calendar read backwards from the paper, and the boundary a tutor does not cross on school-set work.

If your child has just been entered for 0606 and the first problem set has come home covered in red ink, the gap is almost always notation and method rather than ability. That is a teachable problem, and the first lesson is spent finding out which of the six or seven likely gaps it is. The commonest are calculator mode, answer-only working, and an inability to spot that an equation is a quadratic wearing a different hat. None of those three takes long to repair once somebody has named it, which is why a diagnostic lesson is worth more at this stage than a term of general practice.

At a glance

  • 0606 is graded A* to E, not A* to G, so there is no low-tier safety net
  • Both papers are two hours and 80 marks, and each carries half the grade
  • Calculus, binomial expansion and trigonometric proof are the usual fracture points
  • The Department of Knowledge approves curricula, courses and fees for private schools in Ras Al Khaimah
  • Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (Extended)

The core qualification every 0606 candidate takes alongside. Extended tier runs Papers 2 and 4, covers the full grade range to A*, and assumes fluency in algebraic manipulation, surds, indices and graph transformation. A student who is still hesitant with rearranging formulae in 0580 will not cope with the differentiation in 0606, because the calculus is easy and the algebra underneath it is not.

Across Ras Al Khaimah the Extended tier is the standard entry at British-curriculum campuses on the southern coast and at the city-side Indian-curriculum schools that use Cambridge. Tier is set by the centre, appears on the statement of entry, and can usually still be changed before the final entry date, which is the single most useful thing a parent can check in Year 10.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

Two written papers, two hours each, 80 marks each, half the grade apiece, graded A* to E. Content spans functions, quadratics, the modulus function, logarithms and exponentials, straight-line geometry, circular measure in radians, trigonometry including identities and equations, series and the binomial theorem, vectors, matrices, differentiation and integration, and kinematics treated by calculus.

Few Ras Al Khaimah timetables carry it as a taught option with dedicated periods. Students are commonly entered on the strength of a mock result and then taught in a shared group or asked to self-study. If your child is in that position, say so in the consultation, because a self-study candidate needs a different lesson structure from one following a taught scheme of work.

AS Mathematics and IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Where 0606 leads. Pure Mathematics 1 in Cambridge 9709 revisits quadratics, functions, circular measure, trigonometry, series, differentiation and integration at a deeper level, and the overlap with 0606 is substantial. IB Analysis and Approaches assumes the same algebraic fluency and adds proof, sequences and, at Higher Level, considerably more calculus.

Students leaving a Ras Al Khaimah school at sixteen split three ways: AS and A Level at the same campus or in Sharjah, the IB Diploma at the emirate's international provision, or a foundation year at a UAE university. All three reward a 0606 candidate who has actually understood the calculus rather than memorised six question shapes.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0606 is one syllabus, but tutoring it means teaching eight or nine distinct bodies of content. These are the blocks a 0606 course is built from, and what each one is really testing.

Functions, domain and the modulus

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Composite and inverse functions, domain and range stated properly, and the modulus function graphed and solved. Marks are lost on range notation and on forgetting that an inverse exists only where the function is one-to-one. Questions are often the first on a paper and set the tone for the rest of the two hours.

Quadratics, discriminants and inequalities

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Completing the square, the discriminant as a condition rather than a formula, quadratic inequalities solved by sketch, and quadratic-in-disguise equations in e to the x or in a trigonometric ratio. A great many 0606 marks hang on recognising that a messy equation is a quadratic in something other than x.

Logarithms and exponentials

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Laws of logarithms, solving equations by taking logs, and linearising a relationship so that a graph of log y against log x gives a straight line whose gradient and intercept carry meaning. The straight-line-from-logs question appears often and rewards a student who writes down the comparison with y equals mx plus c explicitly.

Circular measure and radians

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Arc length, sector area and composite shapes with a calculator set to radians. The single most common avoidable error in the whole syllabus is a calculator left in degree mode. Teaching here is half geometry and half habit: convert, check, label the diagram, then compute.

Trigonometry, identities and proof

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Solving trigonometric equations across a stated interval, using the Pythagorean identities, and proving an identity from one side to the other. Proof questions are where 0606 separates students most sharply, because a proof cannot be guessed and the mark scheme follows the argument rather than the answer.

Series and the binomial theorem

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Arithmetic and geometric progressions, sums to infinity with the convergence condition stated, and binomial expansion including a single named term or a coefficient. Sign errors inside the bracket and dropped powers in the general term account for most of the lost marks here, and both respond quickly to drilling.

Differentiation and its applications

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Product, quotient and chain rules, derivatives of trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions, tangents and normals, stationary points classified by the second derivative, small increments and connected rates of change. The method marks sit in the setting out, so a tutor spends as much time on layout as on the differentiation itself.

Integration and area

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Integration as reverse differentiation, definite integrals, area between a curve and a line, and integrating composite forms. Students who are fluent at differentiating often stall here because integration requires recognising a pattern rather than applying a rule, which is a different kind of practice.

Vectors, matrices and kinematics

0606 Papers 1 and 2

Vector addition and magnitude, position vectors and simple geometry, matrix multiplication, determinants and inverses, and kinematics handled by differentiating or integrating a displacement, velocity or acceleration function. The kinematics questions are the clearest example in the syllabus of calculus used for something, which makes them useful teaching ground.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

0606 support takes three shapes, and the right one depends on whether your child is following a taught course, self-studying, or repairing specific topics before a series.

Weekly teaching slot

One or two fixed hours a week through Year 11, following the syllabus order rather than the school's. Used by students who are self-studying 0606 or who are in a shared group that moves faster than they do. The tutor keeps a written record of which topics are secure, so revision later is targeted rather than general.

  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, set around the school run
  • Topic sequence chosen with the series date in mind
  • Worked solutions written live on a shared whiteboard, saved afterwards

Topic repair block

Four to eight sessions on a named weakness: calculus method marks, trigonometric proof, binomial expansion, or anything flagged by a mock. Starts with a diagnostic on the student's own marked paper rather than a generic test, because the error pattern is already written on the script.

  • Diagnostic from the student's own marked mock paper
  • One topic per session with a short retention check at the next
  • Written summary of what is now secure and what still is not

Pre-series paper practice

Timed full papers in the eight weeks before the exam window, marked against the published mark scheme, with the discussion afterwards focused on where method marks were available and not taken. This is the stage where a 0606 grade moves most, because the content is usually known by then and the clock is the problem.

  • Full two-hour papers under timed conditions
  • Mark-scheme comparison line by line after each paper
  • Pacing plan for the two-paper week

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

What a 0606 search in Ras Al Khaimah is usually about

Parents who type this query are almost never shopping for general maths help. They are reacting to something specific: a Year 11 report that separates 0580 and 0606 into two different grades, a mock score that fell off a cliff, or a school letter saying their child has been entered for an additional qualification nobody at home has heard of. The first useful thing to establish is that 0606 is a separate Cambridge syllabus with its own entry, its own two papers and its own grade, and that it is graded A* to E.

The second is that a strong 0580 grade does not predict a strong 0606 grade. 0580 Extended rewards accurate work across a wide, familiar content range. 0606 rewards method on unfamiliar ground: recognising a quadratic in disguise, choosing between the product and the chain rule, knowing that a proof must be argued from one side rather than worked from both ends. Students who have coasted on arithmetic fluency and good memory meet a wall somewhere around differentiation, and it arrives suddenly.

The third is availability. In this emirate the subject-specialist pool within a short drive is thin, and families in Mina Al Arab, Al Marjan Island or the inland belt have the added arithmetic of distance. Teaching this syllabus one-to-one over live video is not a compromise forced by geography; it is what makes a 0606 specialist reachable from a northern-emirate living room at all. The trade-off a parent should weigh is set out with numbers further down this page rather than asserted here.

02

From 0580 Extended to 0606, topic by topic

The clearest way to see what 0606 asks is to put it next to the syllabus your child is already sitting. Most of the content below exists in some form in 0580 Extended, but the treatment changes: a technique that was an answer becomes a tool, and the question stops telling the student which tool to pick. That shift, rather than any single new topic, is what makes the first term of 0606 feel disproportionately hard.

The table is the version of this comparison we use in a first lesson. A student who can look at it and say which rows feel comfortable has effectively written their own teaching order, and a parent who reads it stops worrying that their child has become bad at maths. Nothing in the right-hand column is beyond a candidate who holds a solid grade in 0580 Extended, but every row needs teaching rather than practice alone.

One practical note on sequencing. Calculus sits at the end of most schemes of work and at the heart of both papers, so a candidate who arrives in February with differentiation untaught is in a worse position than the mock mark suggests. Where a student is self-studying, we usually bring differentiation forward and teach it before series and vectors, because it has the longest tail of applications and the most method marks attached to it.

The matrices and vectors rows are the ones families most often dismiss as small. They are small in teaching time and large in exam value, because the questions are short, self-contained and easy to secure, which makes them the cheapest marks on either paper for a student who is otherwise struggling. A sensible rescue plan for a weak candidate starts with those two rows and with circular measure, then moves to calculus with whatever time is left.

Where 0606 marks actually go missing

A 0606 script rarely loses marks evenly. It loses them in clusters, and the clusters are predictable enough that a tutor who has marked a few hundred of these papers can usually name a student's pattern after one timed paper. Diagnosing the pattern is the fastest available improvement, because it converts hours of general revision into three or four specific repairs.

The most expensive habit is answer-only working. 0606 mark schemes allocate method marks generously, and a student who writes down a derivative and a final coordinate without the intermediate line has thrown away marks that were available even when the answer is wrong. The second most expensive is calculator mode: radians are used throughout the syllabus, and a degree-mode sector calculation produces a plausible wrong number that will not be caught in a read-through.

The table below lists the question shapes that recur across recent series, what the mark scheme wants, and the error that costs most. We use it as a checklist in the final fortnight, with the student marking each row honestly as secure, shaky or unseen. That self-assessment is more accurate than a predicted grade and considerably more useful, because it maps directly onto what the remaining sessions should cover.

Two further patterns are worth naming because they are invisible on a mark total. The first is the student who abandons a question after one failed approach rather than restarting it with a different method, which on a paper of this length costs whole blocks of marks rather than single ones. The second is the student who does all the mathematics correctly and answers a different question from the one asked, usually by finding a coordinate when the question wanted a gradient, or an exact value when it wanted three significant figures. Both are habits, and habits respond to timed practice with somebody reading the script afterwards.

04

Two papers, four hours, and the arithmetic of the clock

0606 is examined by two written papers. Each runs two hours, carries 80 marks and counts for half the grade, which means there is no component that can be written off and no coursework cushion. Four hours of examination across one series decides the whole qualification, and both papers draw on the full syllabus rather than splitting it between them. A student cannot revise half the content and sit the paper that covers it.

Eighty marks in 120 minutes gives roughly ninety seconds a mark, and the later questions carry more marks than the early ones, so pacing is not evenly distributed. Students who are strong on content and weak on pace typically lose between eight and fifteen marks per paper to unfinished final questions, which is a grade boundary or more. The repair is timed practice with a per-question budget written on the paper, not additional content teaching.

The last fortnight of preparation should therefore look different from the rest of the course. Full papers, taken to time, marked against the published mark scheme, with the review focused on where method marks were available and not claimed. Confirm the structure and the permitted equipment for your child's exam year against the current syllabus on cambridgeinternational.org or with the school's exams officer, because component details are reviewed between syllabus cycles and the statement of entry is the document that settles it.

One scheduling point specific to this emirate. Both papers usually fall inside the same fortnight, and in a small centre they can sit close together, with other subjects between them. A candidate taking eight or nine IGCSEs will meet 0606 in the middle of the heaviest two weeks of the year, not at the start of them, so revision for it has to be finished earlier than feels natural. Families who plan the final month around the timetable rather than around the subject list consistently find the last fortnight calmer.

05

Why so few northern-emirate timetables carry 0606

In Ras Al Khaimah private education is regulated by the Department of Knowledge, which, as the UAE government's own guidance on private schools sets out, regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That approval sits with the emirate regulator rather than with a federal body, and it covers courses as well as fees, which is a point most tutoring sites skip entirely.

None of that stops a school offering Additional Mathematics. The constraint is cohort size. An optional extension subject taken by a dozen students in a year group competes for timetable space and for a teacher qualified to teach post-16 pure mathematics, and in a smaller private-school market those teachers are also the ones carrying the AS and A Level classes. The result is a subject that is entered more often than it is taught in dedicated periods.

For a parent this has two consequences worth planning around. First, find out early whether your child's 0606 is a taught course, a lunchtime group or a self-study entry, because those three need very different support. Second, do not assume the nearest tuition centre covers it; group classes in the emirate are built around 0580, 0620, 0625 and 0610 demand, and a 0606 candidate in a 0580 group is paying to revise what they already know.

There is a third consequence that only shows up in Year 12. A student who was entered for 0606 but effectively taught it alone can arrive at AS or Diploma level with a respectable grade and real holes underneath it, because self-study rewards the topics that read easily and quietly skips proof and integration. If that describes your child, the useful conversation in the summer between the two years is not revision but a short audit of which rows of the syllabus were ever properly taught.

06

The series calendar, counted backwards from the paper

Cambridge runs IGCSE and O Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge is explicit that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the exams officer which zone your centre sits in, then read only that timetable.

The dates that surprise parents are not the exam dates. They are the entry dates, which close months earlier, and the forecast-grade dates, which are the school's formal prediction and often the first written statement of where a student stands. Ras Al Khaimah candidates sit the June series and the November series, so the table below is built around those two and nothing else. Cambridge's February and March sitting is offered to India only, which is why a date copied off a forum thread can belong to a series your child will never enter. The exact day for each milestone comes off the centre's statement of entry and the zone timetable on cambridgeinternational.org, and that is the only version to act on.

Read backwards from the window rather than forwards from today. The June papers run from May into June, and the final entry closes in the spring, roughly four months ahead of the first paper, which means tier and subject decisions for 0606 are effectively settled while the second term is still running. A family deciding in April whether to add 0606 has usually already missed the moment when that was a free choice, because the centre has submitted its entries by then and a late one carries a fee the school may decline to pay. The honest answer at that point is the November series, which has its own entry deadline in the summer and its own papers in the autumn, rather than a rushed entry into a series that has already closed.

Where 0606 leads: AS 9709, Maths AA and UAE admissions

The reason to take Additional Mathematics is almost always the year after it. Pure Mathematics 1 in Cambridge AS 9709 revisits quadratics, functions, circular measure, trigonometry, series and the whole of introductory calculus, so a 0606 candidate starts AS having already met most of the first term. Students moving into IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches find the same advantage, particularly at Higher Level where the calculus load is heavy from the start.

Engineering, computer science and economics routes at UAE universities typically expect the stronger mathematics option rather than the applied one, which in IB terms means Analysis and Approaches and in Cambridge terms means A Level Mathematics. Check the published entry requirements for the specific programme and intake year on the university's own site, because requirements differ between institutions and are revised. What 0606 does is make the stronger option a realistic choice rather than a gamble.

On the certificate itself: for Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five. One ranking competitor states six IGCSE subjects are required; the sourced figure is five. 0606 is an additional accredited subject rather than a replacement for any of them, and equivalency is handled by the Ministry through its own channel, not by any tutoring provider.

08

Academic honesty, school-set work and what a session contains

Additional Mathematics has no coursework component, which removes one whole category of risk. What remains is the weekly problem set, the school assignment and the mock paper, and the boundary there is simple: a tutor teaches the method, works a parallel example, and then watches the student do their own question. No tutor on this platform produces assessed work for a student, and none will sit alongside a timed school assessment. That is a condition of working here rather than a preference.

In practice a session on a school-set problem runs like this. The student shows the question and their attempt. The tutor identifies which step broke, teaches that step on a different question with different numbers, and then sends the student back to the original. The written record from the lesson shows the parallel example, not the completed homework, which is also what makes it useful revision material in February.

Past papers and mark schemes are a related point. Cambridge owns that material; we reference it, teach from the school's legitimate copies and link to the official site, and do not distribute syllabus documents, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads. If your child's school has not issued past papers, the exams officer is the right person to ask, and a tutor can tell you precisely which series and which paper numbers are worth the time.

The last part of a session is the part parents see. Each lesson ends with a short written note: the parallel examples worked, the step that broke, and one or two questions to attempt before the next slot. It is deliberately brief, because a long report takes tutor time that belongs in the teaching, and because three honest lines about what is still shaky are more useful in March than a paragraph of encouragement. Those notes accumulate into the revision list for the final fortnight.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is spread out, and where a family lives changes the school run, the lesson slot and the realistic alternatives to online teaching. These are the areas 0606 enquiries come from.

Al Nakheel

The city centre and the densest concentration of school places in the emirate. Families here have the shortest school run and the most tuition-centre options, but centre classes are group classes in 0580, not 0606.

Al Dhait North and South

Residential and well served by the city schools. An afternoon slot starting at 4.30pm works once the bus has arrived, and that twenty-minute margin matters more than it sounds for a two-hour paper practice.

Khuzam

Serves both the British campus nearby and city-side schools. Households here often have one child on a Cambridge route and another on an Indian-curriculum route, which makes syllabus-code precision useful rather than pedantic.

Al Hamra Village and Al Jazirah Al Hamra

Southern coastal community close to the emirate's British and international provision. The commute north into the city for tuition is the long one, which is why remote lessons are chosen here most often.

Mina Al Arab and Hayat Island

Newer coastal housing with a growing school-age population and no significant tuition infrastructure of its own. A 40-minute each-way drive to a city centre class costs more time per week than the lesson itself.

Al Uraibi and Al Mairid

Older city districts feeding the long-established schools. Enquiries from here are frequently about a single hard subject rather than a full programme, which is the typical shape of a 0606 request.

Al Marjan Island and the northern strip

Island and coastal housing running up towards Al Rams and Sha'am. Distances are real, evening traffic on the corniche is not the issue, the sheer mileage is, and online scheduling removes it entirely.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Southern coast: British and international provision

The campuses most likely to enter a student for Additional Mathematics, because they also run post-16 maths and need the bridge. Even here the subject is usually an option for a small group rather than a timetabled course for the year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us what the paper says

Send the statement of entry or the subject list, the most recent 0606 mock mark, and the marked script if you have it. Those three documents tell a tutor more than a phone call does, because the error pattern is already written on the script and the entry confirms which papers and which series.

  2. 02

Matched to the syllabus, not the subject

We match on 0606 specifically, including whether the student is following a taught course or self-studying, because the lesson plan differs. If no specialist is free at the hour you need, we say so and offer the nearest alternative slot rather than putting a general maths tutor in front of a calculus paper.

  3. 03

A trial lesson, then a diagnostic

One no-charge trial lesson per subject, used as a working session rather than a sales call. The tutor sets two or three diagnostic questions spanning algebra, trigonometry and calculus, and you receive a short written note on what is secure, what is shaky and what has not been taught yet.

A fixed slot and a written record

Lessons run at a set weekly time in Gulf Standard Time, delivered one-to-one over live video with a shared whiteboard. Each session leaves behind worked solutions and a line on what to practise before the next one, so a parent can see progress without sitting in on the lesson.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Syllabus-code matching

A tutor is matched to 0606 rather than to the word maths. That distinction decides whether your child spends the first month being taught calculus method or being re-taught 0580 content they already hold a strong grade in, and it is the single most common mis-match in this market.

Distance stops being a factor

From Mina Al Arab, Al Marjan Island or the inland belt, the realistic local pool of Additional Mathematics teachers is very small. Live one-to-one video removes the drive and widens the pool to anyone qualified, which is why remote teaching is the format for every UAE lesson rather than a fallback.

Method marks taught explicitly

0606 mark schemes reward setting out. Lessons teach the layout a marker is looking for alongside the mathematics, which is why a student's score often moves before their understanding does, and why timed practice with mark-scheme comparison is built into the final weeks rather than offered as an extra.

Honest about availability

Additional Mathematics specialists are a narrow pool, and we tell you when one is not free at your preferred hour instead of filling the slot with someone less suitable. Where a subject or a time cannot be covered, you get the alternative and the trade-off in writing before any commitment.

Boundaries that protect the student

No assessed work is produced for a student, no copyrighted syllabus material is distributed, and no claim is made to any regulator or board endorsement. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform, which is also what lets it name the market rates and the rules plainly on a page like this one.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Is Cambridge IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 worth taking alongside 0580 Extended?+

For a student heading into AS Mathematics 9709 or IB Analysis and Approaches, usually yes: the overlap with the first AS term is substantial and the head start is real. For a student who is working hard to hold a grade B in 0580 Extended, often no, because 0606 adds a second full qualification examined by two two-hour papers with no coursework cushion. The honest test is not ambition but current fluency in algebra. If rearranging and manipulating expressions is still effortful, the calculus in 0606 will compound that rather than fix it.

Which Ras Al Khaimah schools actually enter candidates for 0606?+

Provision varies by campus and by year, so the only reliable answer comes from your own school. British-curriculum and international campuses that also run post-16 mathematics are the most likely to offer it, because they need the bridge into AS or Diploma study. Several city-side Cambridge centres enter a small number of strong mathematicians each series without timetabling the course separately. Ask the head of mathematics two questions: is 0606 a taught course with its own periods, and who teaches it. The answers decide what support your child actually needs.

My son has a grade A in 0580 but is lost in the 0606 calculus. Where does that gap come from?+

Almost always from algebraic fluency rather than from calculus itself. Differentiating a product is a two-line rule; the difficulty is simplifying what the rule produces, factorising it, setting it to zero and solving, often with surds or trigonometric terms in the way. 0580 Extended rewards accurate work on recognisable question types, so a student can score highly without ever being fast at manipulation. We diagnose this by giving the same stationary-point question twice, once with clean numbers and once as it appears on a 0606 paper.

Is 0606 graded on the same A* to G scale as my daughter's other IGCSEs?+

No. Additional Mathematics is reported on an A* to E scale, so the lower grades that exist in other IGCSE subjects are not available here. In practice that means a candidate who is badly out of their depth does not land on a low grade, they land outside the reported range, and it is one reason schools are selective about entry. Treat the mock result as a real signal rather than an early-days wobble, and if it is very low, raise the question of withdrawing the entry before the final entry date rather than after.

Can one tutor cover 0606 and AS Mathematics 9709 in the same year?+

Yes, and for a student moving straight from one to the other it is usually the better arrangement. The content overlap across quadratics, functions, circular measure, trigonometry, series and introductory calculus means a tutor who has taught both can sequence the 0606 work so it doubles as AS groundwork. Tell us at the consultation stage if that is the plan, because it changes which specialist we look for. It also changes the teaching order: proof and calculus come earlier, and matrices later.

Does 0606 count towards the Ministry of Education equivalency subject total?+

Equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Additional Mathematics is an additional accredited subject on that certificate rather than a substitute for any of the five. Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry through its own channel, and current requirements should be read on the Ministry's own site before you rely on them.

How many weekly sessions does a 0606 candidate in Ras Al Khaimah usually need?+

Most families start with one hour a week and move to two in the term before the series. A student who is self-studying the syllabus because the school has not timetabled it generally needs two from the outset, because the tutor is teaching the course rather than supporting it. A student repairing a single topic area may need four to eight sessions and then nothing further. We would rather set the number after the diagnostic lesson than quote a package before anyone has seen the student's work.

We live in Mina Al Arab and the drive to a city tuition centre takes forty minutes. Is an online 0606 lesson the same lesson?+

It is a different format with one significant advantage: the tutor is chosen for the syllabus rather than for proximity. Mathematics teaches well over live video because the work is symbolic and lives on a shared whiteboard that both people write on, and the written record is saved rather than left in a notebook. What you lose is the physical room. What you gain, from Mina Al Arab specifically, is eighty minutes a week of driving back and a teacher who actually teaches Additional Mathematics. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; those exist only in India.

What does a 0606 tutor cost in the northern emirates compared with Dubai?+

Published market rates are set in Dubai and quoted in AED. EdFlik advertises online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150, TutorChase quotes around AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai cost table puts specialist IB and IGCSE tutoring at AED 200 to 450 and above, with in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 once travel is included. Northern-emirate rates for local in-person help tend to sit lower, but the specialist pool is much thinner. Online teaching prices to the specialism, not the postcode. IB Gram's own rate is given at the consultation.

Can my child sit 0606 as a private candidate if the school does not offer it?+

Entries are made through a Cambridge centre, so the practical route is either your child's own school agreeing to enter them or a centre that accepts private candidates. Start with your school's exams officer, because an entry through the school your child already attends is far simpler administratively than finding an external centre. Ask about the final entry date for the series you are targeting and about any fee the centre charges private candidates. A tutor can teach the syllabus either way, but nobody except a centre can make the entry.

Does 0606 help with IB Maths Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level?+

Yes, more than most people expect. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level moves quickly into calculus, trigonometric identities, sequences and proof, and assumes algebraic fluency from the first week. A candidate who has sat 0606 has already met differentiation, integration, radian measure, binomial expansion and identity proof under exam conditions. It does not cover everything the Diploma adds, particularly proof by induction and the complex-number and vector work at Higher Level, but it removes the first-term shock that catches students arriving straight from 0580.

What should we send a tutor before the first 0606 lesson?+

Three things, and they take five minutes to gather. The statement of entry or subject list, so the tutor knows the series and the papers. The most recent marked 0606 assessment, because the error pattern is already visible on it. And the school's scheme of work or topic list if one exists, so lessons are sequenced with the class rather than against it. If none of that exists because your child is self-studying, say so plainly: it is useful information rather than a problem, and it changes the lesson plan from support to teaching.

Can a tutor help with the weekly 0606 problem sets the school sets?+

A tutor teaches the method and works a parallel question, then the student does the set themselves. That boundary is not negotiable here: no assessed work is produced for a student, and nobody sits alongside a timed school assessment. In practice the parallel-example approach is more useful anyway, because what comes out of the lesson is a worked model the student can revise from in February rather than a finished sheet they will not remember. If a school task is actually assessed coursework, we teach around it rather than into it.

Is six weeks before the series too late to start 0606 support?+

It is late, but not pointless, provided the plan changes shape. Six weeks is not enough to teach calculus from nothing to a student who has never differentiated. It is enough to make an already-taught candidate considerably more efficient: timed papers, mark-scheme comparison, method-mark discipline, calculator-mode habits and a pacing budget for eighty marks in two hours. We will tell you honestly which of those two situations your child is in after the diagnostic lesson, including when the better answer is to protect the 0580 grade instead.

Start with the mock script, not the brochure

If your child has been entered for Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics and the first set of marks has not gone the way anyone expected, the next step is small. Send the statement of entry, the most recent marked 0606 paper and the hour of the week that actually works around the school run in Ras Al Khaimah. We match a 0606 specialist, run one no-charge trial lesson per subject as a working diagnostic, and tell you in writing what is secure, what is shaky and what has not been taught yet. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and if no specialist is free at your hour we will say so rather than fill the slot.
