IB DP Extended Essay Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Hiring an IB DP Extended Essay Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah raises a fair question first: the school has already assigned a supervisor, so what exactly is being bought? This page answers that by setting the four alternatives a parent is actually choosing between side by side — the school supervisor, a subject tutor in the essay's registered subject, an editing service, and a process coach over video — and showing which of the 34 marks each one can and cannot move. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Coaching on method and argument, never on producing text
  • Free first session, no card details taken to book it
  • Plans counted backwards from your school's own upload date

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

You already have a supervisor. Here is what the other three options add, and what they cost

Every Diploma candidate is assigned an Extended Essay supervisor by their school, at no extra charge. That supervisor reads one complete draft, holds three recorded reflection sessions and signs the work off. So the honest starting question for a family in Ras Al Khaimah is not 'how do I find an IB DP Extended Essay Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah' but 'what can a paid coach do that the supervisor structurally cannot'. Answer that first and the rest of the decision becomes straightforward.

There are four alternatives on the table and they are genuinely different products, not price points on the same product. The first is the supervisor you already have, whose time and permitted interventions are both capped by IB rules. The second is a subject tutor in whichever subject the essay is registered under, who knows the content but may have never supervised a 4,000-word research project. The third is an editing or polishing service, which is where families in a hurry lose both money and, occasionally, a diploma. The fourth is a process coach working over video, whose job is method rather than content.

The reason the choice matters more in this emirate than in Dubai is supply. Ras Al Khaimah's IB provision sits across a small number of campuses around Al Nakheel, Khuzam and Al Hamra Village, so a student registering an essay in, say, Psychology or Economics may be the only candidate in the school doing so. The supervisor allocated may be a willing teacher from an adjacent subject. That is not a criticism of the school; it is arithmetic. It is also precisely the gap a subject-matched coach fills.

The second reason is geography. In-home visits are quoted in this market at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors, and a specialist driving from Dubai to Al Dhait is pricing three hours of their evening into one paid hour. For a project that needs perhaps eight to twelve hours of guidance spread across nine months, the travel component is a large share of the bill and buys nothing that affects a single criterion.

Two things should be said plainly before the detail. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visits in the UAE are not a service we sell; our in-home offering exists only in India. And nobody here writes any part of an Extended Essay. A coach teaches the criteria, questions a research question, challenges a method and comments on the student's own draft. Any provider offering finished work is creating a malpractice finding for your child, not solving your problem. The sections below take the four alternatives one at a time, in the order a parent in this emirate usually meets them, and each one ends with the specific criteria it can and cannot reach.

At a glance

  • The Extended Essay is 4,000 words maximum, marked out of 34 across five criteria
  • Criterion C, critical thinking, carries 12 marks — more than a third of the total
  • Three reflection sessions are recorded and assessed under criterion E
  • The supervisor may comment on one complete draft and no more
  • The IB recommends about 40 hours of student work on the project
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Extended Essay belongs to the Diploma Programme, but the research habits it assesses are built earlier. The notes below describe how each IB stage runs in Ras Al Khaimah and what it contributes to a 4,000-word project.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The Extended Essay is an independent 4,000-word research project registered in one subject, supervised rather than taught, and graded A to E. Its grade combines with the Theory of Knowledge grade on a matrix worth up to three diploma points, with a grade E in either acting as a failing condition.

In Ras Al Khaimah a Diploma cohort is small enough that a student may be the only candidate registering an essay in their chosen subject. The school then allocates the closest available supervisor, which is reasonable and is also the structural reason subject-matched coaching is more valuable here than on a large Dubai campus with a specialist in every department.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, finishing with the Personal Project in MYP 5. That project is the first time most students define their own goal, keep a process journal and evaluate their own outcome — three habits the Extended Essay then assesses formally under criteria A and E.

Not every Ras Al Khaimah campus offering the Diploma runs the Middle Years Programme beneath it, and some candidates arrive from Indian-curriculum or national-curriculum routes. Those students have usually never kept a research journal, which shows up immediately in the first reflection, and they need an extra few weeks at the start rather than extra help at the end.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry built around transdisciplinary themes, where students are expected from early on to say where a piece of information came from and why it can be trusted. The exhibition in the final primary year is a first, supported version of an independent inquiry with a presented outcome.

Primary provision in Ras Al Khaimah spans British, Indian and IB World School campuses, and families move between them inside the emirate fairly often. A student who has changed system twice may be strong on content and unpractised at citing sources, which is a cheap gap to close at 11 and an expensive one at 17.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Extended Essay is registered in one subject, and the choice changes the method, the sources and the realistic ceiling. The notes below cover the subjects Ras Al Khaimah candidates most often register, with what each demands locally.

Biology

HL and SL candidates

Rewards a question with a measurable variable and a method the student can actually run. The mangrove systems at Mina Al Arab and the wadi vegetation inland give genuine fieldwork options, but ethics and permissions have to be settled before data collection, not after.

Chemistry

HL and SL candidates

Needs laboratory access and a question narrow enough to control. Essays registered here fail most often on scope: a student investigates a whole process rather than one variable, and criterion A loses marks for a question that no 4,000-word essay could answer.

Physics

HL and SL candidates

Strong when a student can model something and then test the model. Weak when the essay becomes a literature review of a famous experiment. School equipment limits are a real constraint in a small emirate and should shape the question from week one.

Economics

HL and SL candidates

A popular registration because local data is reachable: port activity, tourism, construction, the ceramics industry. The commonest failure is an essay that describes a market instead of applying theory to a specific, bounded question about it.

Business Management

HL and SL candidates

Allows primary research with a named organisation, which is easier to arrange in Ras Al Khaimah than in a large city because local firms are approachable. Requires a clear framework rather than a company profile, and informed consent for any interview.

Psychology

HL and SL candidates

Attractive and risky. Ethical restrictions rule out most experiments a 17-year-old wants to run, so strong essays here are usually critical evaluations of existing studies with a sharply bounded question rather than new data collection.

History

HL and SL candidates

The most reliable registration for a student who reads well. The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah and the emirate's pearling, maritime and trading past offer questions with accessible primary and secondary material and a built-in local angle.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL candidates

No equipment and no permissions needed, which makes it the lowest-friction option in a small emirate. The difficulty is a question with a genuine critical argument rather than a theme-spotting exercise across two texts.

Mathematics

HL and SL candidates

Rewards a student who can explain as well as compute. Essays registered here need mathematics beyond the syllabus, developed properly, and they lose marks when the writing becomes a sequence of results with no argument connecting them.

World Studies

Interdisciplinary option

An interdisciplinary registration addressing an issue of global significance through two subjects. Demanding but well suited to a student whose question genuinely sits between two disciplines, such as coastal development and environmental systems in the northern emirates.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three booking shapes cover almost every Extended Essay request from this emirate, and all three are delivered one-to-one over live video with a shared document.

Research question block, early

Three or four sessions at the very start, spent entirely on narrowing a question until it is answerable in 4,000 words with resources the student can actually reach from Ras Al Khaimah. This is the cheapest useful intervention in the whole project and the one families most often skip.

  • Subject registration tested against the student's real strengths
  • Question narrowed until the method is obvious from the wording
  • Source and access check before any data is planned
  • Ethics and permissions raised before fieldwork, not after

Method and argument sessions across the project

Fortnightly or monthly sessions tracking the student's own progress between the school's reflection sessions. The focus is criterion C: whether the analysis actually argues something, whether the evidence supports it, and whether a counter-reading has been dealt with rather than ignored.

  • Student brings their own writing; nothing is drafted for them
  • Argument structure tested against criterion C's 12 marks
  • Source quality and referencing discipline checked as they go
  • A written note after each session the student can show the supervisor

One draft read, in writing

A single reading of the student's complete draft with written comments on focus, argument, evidence and presentation. It does not replace the supervisor's permitted draft comment; it comes earlier, so the student has time to act on both.

  • Comments on the student's own text, with no rewriting
  • Presentation and referencing errors itemised for the student to fix
  • Word count and criterion-by-criterion read against the 34 marks
  • Timed so the supervisor's draft reading is not wasted

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

Alternative one: the supervisor you already have, and the three reflections that cap what they may say

The supervisor is free, assigned and bound. The IB expects a supervisor to give a few hours of support across the whole project, to hold three recorded reflection sessions with the student, and to read and comment on one complete draft. After that draft comment, the supervisor may not give further written feedback on the writing. That cap is deliberate: the Extended Essay is assessed partly on the student's independence, and a heavily shepherded essay would not test it.

The three reflection sessions are not administrative. They are recorded on the reflections form and assessed under criterion E, worth six of the 34 marks, with roughly 500 words of student reflection across the three. The first comes early and should show a question taking shape. The second, the interim, should show a method in motion and problems encountered. The third, the viva voce, comes after submission and should show the student talking honestly about what they learned and what they would do differently.

What this means in practice is that the supervisor's most valuable hours are at the start, and most students use them at the end. A supervisor asked in October whether a research question is answerable will say something genuinely useful. The same supervisor asked in February to fix a 4,000-word essay built on an unanswerable question has almost nothing left to offer, because the one permitted draft comment cannot repair criterion A retrospectively.

Before paying anyone, extract three things from the supervisor and write them down: the school's internal deadline for the complete draft, the dates of the three reflection sessions, and their honest view of whether the research question is answerable in 4,000 words. Those three facts are what a paid coach needs in order to be useful, and getting them costs nothing. One route to rule out: professional-ethics rules in some emirates bar school staff from paid private tuition of students at their own school, and the MoHRE tuition permit carries the same condition.

02

Alternative two: a subject tutor in the subject the essay is registered under

A subject tutor knows the content, and on some essays that is exactly what is missing. A Physics essay whose model is wrong, an Economics essay applying the wrong framework, a Mathematics essay whose proof does not hold: these are content failures and they are fixed by someone who knows the subject at Diploma level or beyond. In a small emirate where the supervisor allocated may teach an adjacent subject, this is a real gap and worth paying to close.

The limitation is that the Extended Essay is not primarily a content assessment. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries 12 of the 34 marks — more than a third — and it rewards argument, use of evidence and engagement with counter-positions rather than knowledge. Criterion A, focus and method, carries six and is about scope and approach. A tutor who teaches brilliant Physics and has never supervised a research project will improve the physics and leave half the mark scheme untouched.

The other limitation is habit. Subject tutoring is a teaching relationship: the tutor explains, the student follows. Extended Essay coaching has to be the opposite, because the essay must demonstrate the student's own independent work. A tutor who slips into teaching mode starts suggesting what the next paragraph should argue, and at that point the essay is drifting away from the student without anyone intending it. The best subject tutors on this work consciously hold back.

The sensible version of this alternative is narrow and short: two or three sessions on the subject-specific content where the essay is genuinely weak, with the method and argument work done elsewhere. That also keeps the cost sane. Published specialist rates in this market run AED 200 to 450 an hour and higher, and nobody needs twenty hours of that for a project the IB expects to take about 40 hours of student work in total.

03

Alternative three: an editing or polishing service, and why it is the most expensive option on this list

This is the alternative families reach for when the deadline is close, and it is the one that should be ruled out in every case. The market contains operations that will take a student's draft and return something better written. Some of them describe this as proofreading. Some will supply a finished essay outright; one such operation in this market publishes a price for completed internal assessments. What all of them are selling is a breach of IB academic honesty rules, dressed in the language of a service.

The consequence sits on the student, not on the provider. Work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice, and a malpractice finding on the Extended Essay can cost the Diploma rather than a grade. The supervisor authenticates the work and the student signs a declaration. The three reflections, which are assessed, are supposed to document a real process; a student who did not do the work has to misrepresent it there too, which makes the problem larger rather than smaller.

There is a narrower, legitimate version of the same instinct, and it is worth naming so families can tell the difference. A student may use a spellchecker. A student may ask a parent whether a sentence is clear. A student may be told their referencing is inconsistent and then fix it themselves. What nobody may do is restructure the essay, rewrite paragraphs, supply analysis or produce text that appears in the submission. The test is simple: did the words in the final document come out of the student?

If a provider's sales conversation is about turnaround time and word counts rather than about the research question, that tells you what you are being sold. Ask directly what they will return. 'Written feedback your child then acts on' is a coach. 'A polished version' is not. In a market where one ranking page is an essay mill with no FAQs and a published price for finished assessments, that question is the cheapest protection a parent has.

04

Alternative four: a process coach over video, and the five things a session can legitimately do

The fourth alternative is a coach whose subject is the project rather than the discipline. Their work is almost entirely questions, and the five legitimate moves are easy to list. First, test whether the research question is answerable in 4,000 words with sources the student can reach. Second, test whether the method follows from the question rather than being bolted on. Third, read the student's own writing and say where the argument does not hold. Fourth, itemise presentation and referencing failures for the student to fix. Fifth, keep the schedule honest against the school's dates.

None of those five involves producing text, and that is what makes the model safe to use alongside a school supervisor rather than in competition with it. It also makes it suited to video delivery: a shared screen with the student's own draft on it, the coach asking why a paragraph is there, the student annotating as they go. The session leaves a written note the student can show their supervisor, which is how external support stays declared and visible rather than hidden.

For a Ras Al Khaimah family the practical appeal is subject matching. A student registering an essay in Psychology or World Studies in a small cohort may be the only candidate doing so in the emirate. Online, the pool of coaches who have actually supervised essays in that subject is national or international rather than local, and the whole travel premium disappears. A specialist driving from Dubai to Al Hamra Village is charging for three hours of their evening to deliver one.

The honest limits are worth stating too. A process coach cannot rescue an essay in the final fortnight; criterion A is set by a question chosen months earlier. They cannot replace a supervisor, who holds the reflection sessions and authenticates the work. And they are not needed by every candidate: a student with a sharp question, a working method and a disciplined calendar may need nothing at all, and a free first session is the cheapest way to find that out.

Research in Ras Al Khaimah: what a student can actually get hold of

A research question is only as good as the sources behind it, and this is where location genuinely matters. A candidate in central London has a dozen research libraries within an hour. A candidate in Al Dhait does not, and an essay that depends on material the student cannot reach will fail criterion A regardless of how interesting the question is. The sequence that works is: question, then source check, then method. Students who do it in the other order lose a term.

What is actually available is more than families assume. Several universities operate in the emirate, including the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, RAK Medical and Health Sciences University and University of Stirling RAK, and school libraries can sometimes arrange reading access or journal access for a sixth-former with a clear request. The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah holds material on the emirate's pearling, maritime and trading history that no other candidate's bibliography will contain.

For primary data the emirate is unusually good. The mangrove and wetland system at Mina Al Arab supports genuine ecological fieldwork. The abandoned village at Al Jazirah Al Hamra is a documented heritage site. Jebel Jais and the inland wadis offer altitude, geology and vegetation gradients. The ceramics and cement industries, the Al Marjan hotel economy and the port give Economics and Business candidates local, bounded, researchable questions rather than generic market studies.

Three cautions, because primary data is where good projects go wrong. Permissions and ethics come first: an interview needs informed consent, a protected site needs permission, and anything involving people under 18 needs a careful look at the school's own policy. Sample sizes have to be realistic for a project of about 40 hours. And no amount of interesting data rescues an essay whose question was never answerable, which is why the question block comes before the fieldwork block in every sensible plan.

06

What Extended Essay support costs, and what a parent can check in an afternoon

The most useful thing about Extended Essay pricing is that a parent can audit it themselves without trusting anybody's page, including this one. Ring three providers. Ask for Extended Essay support in a named subject for a candidate in Ras Al Khaimah. Ask for the hourly rate in dirhams, how many hours they think the project needs, what they will return after reading a draft, and whether their support would need to be declared to the school. Write down four answers each. The pattern that comes back is more informative than any rate table.

For reference, here is what this market publishes. Budget online tutoring runs roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject teacher online is about AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialist IB tutoring sits at AED 200 to 450 or more, where TutorChase quotes AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table reaches AED 450 and above. Premium named tutors reach AED 650, as BartyED publishes.

In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors, and monthly packages advertised in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Set that against the project: the IB expects about 40 hours of student work in total. A provider proposing twenty paid hours of guidance on a 40-hour project is proposing something other than guidance.

Every figure above is a market rate attributed to whoever published it, not an IB Gram price list, and that distinction is worth insisting on from anyone you speak to. Three of six ranking pages researched in this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars rather than dirhams. Our own number comes from the consultation after a free first session, and a realistic Extended Essay engagement is usually a short block rather than a weekly commitment across nine months.

Counting backwards from the upload, in a Ras Al Khaimah school year

A Diploma year in this emirate runs from late August or early September to late June, with a winter break in December, a spring break around March and Ramadan moving earlier each year. The Extended Essay typically starts in the second half of DP1 and is submitted in DP2, which sounds like a year of runway. It is not, because the usable weeks are shared with six subjects' internal assessments, Theory of Knowledge and mock examinations, and they clump.

The pattern of failure is consistent. A student chooses a question in spring of DP1, does nothing over the summer, returns in September with the question unchanged and unexamined, and starts serious work in November. By then the sources have not been checked, the method has not been tested, and the first reflection session has either not happened or happened without content. Everything after that is compressed into the same weeks as the internal assessment deadlines.

Counting backwards fixes it. Start from the school's internal deadline for the complete draft, not from the IB submission date. Subtract two weeks for the supervisor's one permitted draft comment and the student's response to it. Subtract six weeks for writing. Subtract six for data collection or reading. Subtract four for narrowing the question and checking that sources exist. That puts the honest start date in the spring or summer of DP1, which is earlier than almost any student believes.

Two local adjustments. The summer break is long and is the single best block of uninterrupted research time a candidate will get; a student who reads and narrows their question over it arrives in DP2 months ahead. And Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar slots rather than stopping, which preserves continuity families often write off in advance. Confirm every IB date with your school's Diploma coordinator, because the IB publishes and revises them and we do not restate them here.

The 4,000 words, the formatting, and the marks that leave for free

Four thousand words is a ceiling, not a target, and examiners stop reading at it. Everything after the limit is unmarked, which means a student who puts their best analysis in the final 300 words of a 4,300-word essay has given those marks away for nothing. The fix is structural: plan backwards from the limit, allocate words to sections before writing, and treat the conclusion as something that must exist rather than something that happens if there is room.

Criterion D, presentation, carries four marks and is the easiest block of marks in the Diploma to collect or to lose. It wants a title page, contents, consistent referencing, a bibliography, legible tables and figures with captions, and sensible use of appendices. Every one of those is a checklist item. Students lose marks here not through difficulty but through hurry, and a coach's most mechanical useful act is to itemise the failures and hand the list back for the student to fix themselves.

Referencing is the item that causes the most trouble, and the rule is less complicated than students fear: pick one recognised system, use it consistently, and cite everything that is not the student's own thought. Inconsistency costs presentation marks, and an uncited source is an honesty problem rather than a formatting one. Appendices are not a storage unit for material the essay needed; anything the argument depends on belongs in the body, inside the word count.

Worth stating in plain terms, because it is the question families ask last and should ask first: nobody at IB Gram writes any part of an Extended Essay, restructures one, or returns a rewritten version. A coach teaches the criteria, questions a research question, challenges a method, reads the student's own draft and gives written feedback the student then acts on. We will tell you if a request crosses that line, and we would rather lose the booking than put a diploma at risk.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Where a family lives in Ras Al Khaimah affects session timing and, for an Extended Essay specifically, what research material and primary-data sites are realistically reachable. Both notes appear below.

Al Nakheel

The city centre, near government offices, the Chamber of Commerce and the older souq. Short school runs make a 4:30pm session workable, and the institutions here are the most approachable starting points for a business or economics interview.

Khuzam

Residential and close to several larger private campuses. A 5pm start is normal. Families here often have two children on different programmes, so an Extended Essay slot usually has to be held as a fixed weekly appointment rather than arranged week to week.

Al Hamra Village

Around 20 kilometres south of the city with its own campuses, a marina and a golf community. The distance is why travelling tutors quote more here; it also makes tourism and coastal-development questions researchable on the doorstep.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront housing beside a protected wetland and mangrove system. For a Biology or Environmental Systems essay this is the strongest primary-data site in the emirate, provided permissions and ethics are settled before any sampling.

Al Dhait

Al Dhait North and South hold a large share of family housing, with long runs to the southern campuses. A 4pm session is unrealistic on a school day; 6pm onwards works, which suits the long uninterrupted block a research plan needs.

Al Qusaidat

North of the creek towards Al Rams and the old coastal settlements. Furthest from the southern school cluster, and the richest ground in the emirate for a History essay on pearling, fishing or pre-oil trade.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed islands with apartment stock, hotels and a weekend rhythm. Saturday morning sessions fill more easily than weekday evenings here, and the tourism economy is directly observable for an Economics or Business registration.

Al Nakheel, Khuzam and Al Uraibi

The city-side cluster, where most Diploma candidates in the emirate sit. Small cohorts mean a student registering an essay in a less common subject may be the only one doing so, and the supervisor allocated is the nearest available teacher.

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the question and the school's dates

Before anything is booked, send the draft research question, the registered subject and the school's internal deadline and reflection-session dates. A coach cannot be useful without those dates, and asking the supervisor for them costs nothing and takes one email.

  2. 02

Free first session on the question itself

The first session costs nothing, takes no card details and is taught by the coach who would continue. It is spent testing whether the question is answerable in 4,000 words with sources the student can reach from Ras Al Khaimah. Sometimes the answer is that no further coaching is needed.

  3. 03

A short written plan with real dates in it

The coach counts backwards from the school's draft deadline and sets out what the next few sessions cover, in what order. The plan names your school's own dates, which is why we ask for them first rather than offering a generic nine-month schedule.

  4. 04

Sessions between the reflections, not instead of them

Coaching is timed to sit between the school's three reflection sessions so the supervisor's permitted draft comment is not wasted. A written note after each session goes to the parent and can be shown to the supervisor, which keeps external support declared.

  5. 05

    One draft reading, then stop

The coach reads one complete draft and returns written comments on focus, argument, evidence and presentation. The student makes every change themselves. We say when the block has done its work instead of extending it through the spring.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The alternatives compared, not a straw man

This page sets the school supervisor, a subject tutor, an editing service and a process coach side by side against the actual 34 marks. Competitor pages in this market compare themselves to an unnamed 'other platforms'; a model-level comparison is more useful to a parent deciding.

Subject matching instead of local availability

A Ras Al Khaimah candidate registering an essay in Psychology or World Studies may be the only one in the emirate. Online coaching draws from people who have actually supervised essays in that subject rather than from whoever is within a 30-minute drive of Al Nakheel.

Rates in dirhams, each attributed to its source

Every AED figure here is a published market rate with the publisher named. Three of six ranking pages researched in this market publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, a currency UAE families do not transact in.

A stated honesty boundary, before you pay

A coach teaches, questions and comments on the student's own work. We do not write, restructure, polish or supply any part of an Extended Essay or its reflections. An operation in this market sells completed assessments; that is a malpractice risk sold as convenience.

Local research, not a generic bibliography

Mina Al Arab's mangroves, Al Jazirah Al Hamra, the National Museum, Jebel Jais and the emirate's industry give Ras Al Khaimah candidates bounded local questions. An essay built on material nobody else used reads differently to an examiner.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

What exactly am I paying an Extended Essay tutor for when the school gives us a supervisor?+

For the things the supervisor is capped from doing. A supervisor gives a few hours across the whole project, holds three recorded reflection sessions and reads one complete draft. After that draft comment they may not give further written feedback. A paid coach adds subject matching where the school allocated the nearest available teacher, and adds hours at the start, which is where the question is narrowed and where the 12 marks of criterion C are won or lost. What they must never add is text. Get the school's dates from the supervisor first; that costs nothing.

How many times can my child's Extended Essay supervisor read a draft?+

Once. The IB allows the supervisor to read and comment on one complete draft, and after that comment no further written feedback on the writing is permitted. That makes the timing of the draft critical: a draft handed in too early wastes the comment on problems the student would have fixed anyway, and one handed in too late leaves no time to act on it. The three reflection sessions are separate from the draft reading and are assessed under criterion E, worth six of the 34 marks.

Is an Extended Essay proofreading service allowed under IB rules?+

Be careful with the word. A student may use a spellchecker, and may be told their referencing is inconsistent and then fix it themselves. What is not allowed is anybody restructuring the essay, rewriting paragraphs, supplying analysis or producing text that appears in the submission. The test is whether the words in the final document came out of the student. Operations in this market sell completed work; one publishes a price for finished internal assessments. A malpractice finding on the Extended Essay can cost the Diploma, not a grade.

Where can a Ras Al Khaimah student collect primary data for an Extended Essay?+

More places than families expect. The mangrove and wetland system at Mina Al Arab supports genuine ecological fieldwork. Al Jazirah Al Hamra is a documented heritage site. Jebel Jais and the inland wadis give geology and vegetation gradients. The ceramics industry, the Al Marjan hotel economy and the port give Economics and Business candidates bounded local questions. Settle permissions and ethics before collecting anything, keep the sample realistic for a project of about 40 hours, and check sources exist before committing to the question.

Which Extended Essay subject is easiest to score well in?+

There is no easy subject, only a better or worse fit for a particular student. English A and History are the lowest-friction registrations in a small emirate because they need no equipment and no permissions, and History in particular has strong local material through the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah. Chemistry and Physics need laboratory access and tight scope. Psychology looks attractive and is constrained by ethics. Register where the student reads well and can describe a method they can actually carry out.

How much does Extended Essay help cost in Ras Al Khaimah?+

Market rates rather than ours: budget online tutoring runs roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified teacher online is about AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and BartyED publishing AED 650 at the premium end. Set any quote against the project: the IB expects about 40 hours of student work in total, so twenty paid hours of guidance is not guidance.

Does the Extended Essay really have to be exactly 4,000 words?+

It has to be no more than 4,000. The limit is a ceiling and examiners stop reading at it, so anything after the limit is unmarked. A student who puts their strongest analysis in the final 300 words of a 4,300-word essay has given those marks away. There is no minimum that rescues a thin essay either; a 2,800-word essay simply has less room to earn criterion C's 12 marks. Plan word allocations by section before writing, and treat the conclusion as compulsory rather than optional.

What are the five Extended Essay criteria worth?+

Thirty-four marks in total. Criterion A, focus and method, is six marks and covers the question, the scope and the approach. Criterion B, knowledge and understanding, is six and rewards accurate subject-specific knowledge in context. Criterion C, critical thinking, is twelve — more than a third of the essay — and rewards argument, evidence and engagement with counter-positions. Criterion D, presentation, is four and is a checklist. Criterion E, engagement, is six and comes from the three recorded reflections written by the student.

Can an Extended Essay coach work over video from outside the UAE?+

Yes, and for a small emirate that is usually the point. A coaching session is a shared screen with the student's own draft on it, the coach asking why a paragraph is there and the student annotating as they go. Nothing needs to be physically in the room, and the session leaves a written note that can be shown to the supervisor so the support stays declared. It also removes the travel component that drives in-home quotes of AED 180 to 500 an hour in this market.

What happens if my child misses the school's Extended Essay draft deadline?+

The immediate loss is the supervisor's one permitted draft comment, which is the single most valuable piece of free feedback in the project. Schools set internal deadlines well ahead of the IB submission precisely so there is room to act on that comment, so a missed internal deadline usually compresses writing, revision and the final reflection into the same fortnight as subject internal assessments. Talk to the Diploma coordinator immediately rather than quietly working on. Confirm all IB dates through the school, since the IB sets and revises them.

Do Extended Essay tutors in Ras Al Khaimah need a MoHRE permit?+

Anyone giving private tuition in the UAE needs the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published. Ask for the permit reference before the first paid session, and note the permit answers a legal question rather than a competence one.

Should my son pick an Extended Essay subject he is taking at Higher Level?+

Usually, but not automatically. Taking the subject at Higher Level means he already has the knowledge criterion B rewards and a teacher in the building who understands the discipline. The argument against is workload: an essay registered in the same subject as a demanding internal assessment puts two major pieces of work in one department's deadline window. The better question is where he reads well and can carry out a method. A student who writes strongly and registers in a laboratory subject without laboratory access has chosen badly whatever his level.

How are the Extended Essay reflections marked?+

They are the evidence for criterion E, engagement, worth six of the 34 marks, and they are written by the student across three recorded sessions with the supervisor — roughly 500 words in total. The first should show a question taking shape. The interim should show the method in motion, including a problem met and a decision taken. The viva voce, after submission, should be honest about what was learned and what would change. Reflections that read as a summary of the essay score poorly; ones that document real decisions score well.

What should I check before paying anyone for Extended Essay support?+

Four questions, asked in one phone call. What is your hourly rate in dirhams? How many hours do you think this project needs, against the roughly 40 hours of student work the IB expects? What exactly do you return after reading a draft? Would your support need to be declared to the school? A provider who talks about turnaround time and word counts is selling something other than coaching. 'Written feedback your child then acts on' is the answer you want; 'a polished version' is the one to walk away from.

Start with the question, not with a provider

If you are weighing an IB DP Extended Essay tutor in Ras Al Khaimah against the supervisor your school has already assigned, the cheapest useful step is free: ask the supervisor for the internal draft deadline, the three reflection dates and an honest view on whether the research question is answerable in 4,000 words. Send those answers and the draft question, and the free first session will be spent testing the question against sources your child can actually reach from this emirate. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and your child writes every word of the essay.
