IB DP Chemistry HL Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Parents look for an IB DP chemistry HL tutor in Ras Al Khaimah at one of three moments: when the energetics arithmetic stops working, when organic mechanisms arrive, or when the scientific investigation deadline is six weeks away and no data has been collected. Each has a different number of weeks in it. This page sets out where a Higher Level Chemistry student usually is, where the course needs them to be, and what the term in between has to carry.

  • All six Structure and Reactivity themes taught at Higher Level depth
  • Paper 2 extended-response technique practised against the mark scheme
  • Investigation coached on method, with the student writing the report

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

The term you are in decides what Higher Level Chemistry support can do

Higher Level Chemistry is 240 teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the ninety-hour difference is concentrated rather than spread. It lands in energetics, where Born-Haber cycles and Gibbs free energy appear; in kinetics, where rate equations and the Arrhenius relationship appear; in equilibrium and acid-base chemistry, where the calculations become genuinely demanding; and in organic chemistry, where reaction mechanisms and spectroscopic identification arrive together. A student can be perfectly competent through the first half of DP1 and meet all of that inside two terms.

That shape is why timing matters so much in this subject. The content that decides Higher Level grades is back-loaded, and it collides with the scientific investigation, the Extended Essay and the mock exam season. In a small Diploma cohort the collision is worse, because the teacher carrying Higher Level Chemistry is often carrying the Standard Level group and a Middle Years science class in the same week, and the Higher Level additions get compressed into the weeks that are left.

Ras Al Khaimah makes that concrete. The emirate runs a compact private-school set under its own Department of Knowledge, and a Diploma cohort here may send four or five students into Chemistry at Higher Level. Nobody is short-changing anybody; a group of five cannot justify a second specialist. What it means practically is that a parent looking for additional Higher Level Chemistry teaching inside the emirate is looking for a person who is already fully timetabled, and that searching harder locally does not change the arithmetic.

Teaching one-to-one over live video changes which constraint applies. The tutor is chosen because they teach Higher Level Chemistry, know what Paper 2 rewards, and have supervised investigations against the four published criteria. The session happens at a fixed time on Gulf Standard Time with no drive from Al Hamra Village or Al Nakheel at either end. For chemistry specifically, the screen is an advantage rather than a compromise: mechanisms, energy cycles and titration curves are drawn and annotated live, and the drawing is the explanation.

The investigation is the component where the timeline bites hardest. It is worth 20% of the final grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria, and capped at 3,000 words. It requires data the student has actually obtained, which means laboratory access through the school and a research design agreed before any apparatus is touched. Students who leave it until the school's internal deadline is visible end up with whatever data they could get rather than the data their question needed, and the conclusion and evaluation criteria punish that directly.

What follows is the detail: the six themes with the Higher Level additions named, how the two papers are weighted and what each rewards, the three places Higher Level marks reliably disappear, the investigation criterion by criterion with dates, how practical work is handled when the teaching is remote, the Chemistry year laid against the school calendar, what the UAE market charges and what a travelling tutor's premium actually buys.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level Chemistry sits at the end of a sequence that starts well before the Diploma. These are the IB programmes Ras Al Khaimah families ask about, and what each means for a student heading into Chemistry at Higher Level.

PYPAges 3-12 · Early years to Grade 5

Primary Years Programme

The Primary Years Programme has no chemistry as such, but it establishes the habit of asking a question and designing a way to answer it. Students who arrive in the Middle Years having been asked to plan their own investigations find the scientific investigation at Diploma level far less alien than those who have only followed instructions on a worksheet.

Only a small number of Ras Al Khaimah campuses run the Primary Years Programme, so many local Diploma students join the IB pathway later from a British or Indian curriculum. That matters at Higher Level Chemistry because independent experimental design is the skill those curricula build least, and it is the first criterion the investigation assesses.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Middle Years sciences are assessed against four criteria, one of which asks students to inquire and design. Criterion B and criterion C scores in MYP 5 sciences are the best available predictor of how a student will cope with the Diploma investigation, and they are more useful than an overall science grade because they separate knowledge from method.

Where a Ras Al Khaimah school runs MYP into Year 11, the integrated sciences course gives less separate chemistry time than a British Year 10 and 11 double or triple award would. Students moving from MYP into Higher Level Chemistry commonly need a short bridging block on moles, bonding and basic organic naming before the Diploma content starts.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Chemistry at Higher Level is examined by two written papers and the scientific investigation. Paper 1 combines multiple choice with data-based questions, Paper 2 is extended response, and a data booklet is supplied in both. The investigation is internally assessed and externally moderated, and the whole course is taught across two years with the investigation submitted in the second.

A northern-emirate Diploma cohort may run Higher Level and Standard Level Chemistry in the same room for part of the week. The content overlaps substantially, so that is a sensible arrangement, but the Higher Level additions in energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms are the part that cannot be taught to both groups at once.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry at Higher Level is normally one of three sciences or mathematics subjects under pressure in the same timetable. These are the Diploma subjects Ras Al Khaimah families most often raise alongside it.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Six themes: Structure 1 to 3 on the particulate nature of matter, bonding and classification, and Reactivity 1 to 3 on what drives reactions, how far and how fast they go, and by what mechanisms. Higher Level adds the quantitative treatment of almost all of it, plus organic mechanisms and spectroscopic identification.

Biology

HL and SL

Four themes crossed with four levels of biological organisation, from molecules to ecosystems. Students taking both sciences meet the same investigation criteria twice, which is an advantage if the two pieces of coursework are planned on different timelines and a problem if they are not.

Physics

HL and SL

Themes A to E, with a combined multiple-choice and data-analysis Paper 1. The uncertainty and graph-linearisation work is identical in character to the data analysis criterion in the Chemistry investigation, so a student doing both should be taught that technique once and properly.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra-and-calculus route, with Paper 1 sat without a calculator. Higher Level Chemistry leans on logarithms for pH and pKa work and on exponential relationships for the Arrhenius equation, which Analysis and Approaches students handle most comfortably.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling and statistics route with technology permitted throughout. Its regression and significance-testing content maps directly onto the data analysis criterion of a Chemistry investigation, which is where Applications and Interpretation students have a real advantage.

Biology-adjacent health science routes

HL focus

Students aiming at medicine, pharmacy or biomedical sciences usually carry Chemistry at Higher Level with Biology, and often with Mathematics at Higher Level as well. The practical consequence is three pieces of internally assessed coursework in the same academic year, which has to be sequenced deliberately.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with a portfolio of three commentaries as coursework. For a science student it is the extended written argument that usually needs work rather than the quantitative content.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Two written papers plus an individual oral, with an additional essay at Higher Level. Chemistry students often write precisely but briefly, and the marks lost here tend to be about development of an argument rather than about accuracy.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title. The natural sciences are a standing area of knowledge, and a Higher Level Chemistry student has concrete material on models, evidence and the limits of a theory.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research essay. A Chemistry Extended Essay is a common choice and a demanding one, because it needs experimental work or a defensible data source, and the supervision line has to be clear before the research starts.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Algorithms, data structures and systems, with an internally assessed solution. Students who take it alongside Chemistry often use it for data handling in the investigation, which is legitimate as long as the analysis itself is the student's own work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns families here use, chosen by where the student sits on the Chemistry timeline rather than by a package name.

Weekly Higher Level teaching

One fixed session a week, sometimes two in the term when energetics and equilibrium arrive together. The sequence tracks the school's scheme of work where it is holding and runs ahead where the Higher Level additions have been compressed, with the quantitative topics given the time they actually need.

  • Same tutor and slot each week on Gulf Standard Time
  • Energetics, kinetics and equilibrium calculations taught step by step
  • Mechanisms drawn live rather than shown as finished diagrams
  • Short written note after each session naming what to practise

Investigation design and supervision support

A block of sessions across DP1 and early DP2 that takes a student from a vague interest to a defensible research design, then supports the analysis once data exists. The student writes every word of the report, and the tutor responds to what the student brings.

  • Research question narrowed until the variables are measurable
  • Method checked against what the school laboratory can actually supply
  • Uncertainty and error treatment taught before the data is collected
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never a supplied draft

Exam-term paper work

An intensive block in the final weeks on technique rather than content. Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data questions and Paper 2 extended response are practised separately, because each rewards a different habit, and every script comes back marked against the command terms.

  • Paper 1B data questions drilled apart from multiple choice
  • Paper 2 extended responses marked against command terms
  • Data booklet navigation practised until it is automatic
  • Error log kept by theme and carried between sessions

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

Where a Higher Level Chemistry student usually is when a parent first calls

  • DP1 with gaps in moles, bonding and organic naming conventions
  • Confident until energetics and the sign conventions arrived
  • Kinetics, equilibrium and acid-base calculations unresolved
  • DP2 with an investigation whose data cannot answer its question

There are three recognisable arrival points and they need different first months. The earliest is the DP1 student who came through an integrated Middle Years science course or a single-award curriculum and is short on the groundwork: moles, concentration, bonding and the naming conventions that organic chemistry assumes. They are not struggling with Higher Level content yet. They are struggling with what Higher Level content is built on, and a short bridging block fixes it cheaply if it happens in term one rather than term four.

The second is the student who was comfortable until the quantitative Higher Level additions arrived. Energetics is usually the moment: Born-Haber cycles, entropy and Gibbs free energy require a student to hold several sign conventions in mind at once, and a single sign error produces an answer that looks plausible and is wrong. Kinetics and equilibrium follow with rate equations, the Arrhenius relationship and equilibrium constant calculations. These students are good chemists with a specific, fixable arithmetic problem, and they often think they have stopped understanding chemistry.

The third arrives in DP2 with a scientific investigation that has no data, or has data that cannot answer the question asked. That is the hardest brief because it has a hard deadline set by the school, and because the data analysis, conclusion and evaluation criteria all depend on what was collected. The honest order of work is to establish what data exists, decide whether the question can be reframed around it, and only then write. A tutor who starts with the report rather than with the data is solving the wrong problem.

02

The six themes, and what Higher Level adds to each

The current guide is organised into Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3, with the experimental and mathematical tools threaded through all six rather than taught separately. Both levels meet the same six themes. What Higher Level adds is largely the quantitative and mechanistic treatment, which is why the extra ninety hours do not feel like extra topics so much as a second, harder pass through the same material.

Knowing which additions have been taught in full is more useful to a parent than any general report comment. Three of them are reliably compressed in a small cohort because they sit late: the entropy and Gibbs free energy work in Reactivity 1, the acid-base and buffer calculations in Reactivity 2, and the organic mechanisms and spectroscopic identification in Structure 3 and Reactivity 3. Those three between them carry a large share of the Higher Level marks on Paper 2.

The table names the additions theme by theme, so you can ask a specific question at a parents' evening. 'Has the class finished the buffer calculations and pH curves?' produces an answer you can plan around. A question about whether chemistry is going well does not. It is also the document a tutor should build the first diagnostic from, because testing all six themes evenly wastes sessions on content the student has genuinely met. One further point about the structure of the guide is worth making, because it changes how revision should work. The experimental techniques, technology and mathematics content is threaded through all six themes rather than taught as a separate unit, which means uncertainty treatment and graph work are examinable in any theme and cannot be revised once and set aside.

How Chemistry HL is marked, and why Paper 2 decides the grade

Higher Level Chemistry is assessed by two written papers and the scientific investigation. Paper 1 combines a multiple-choice section with data-based questions and carries 36% of the grade. Paper 2 is extended response and carries 44%. The investigation carries the remaining 20%. A data booklet is supplied in both written papers, which changes what revision should look like: there is no value in memorising constants, and considerable value in being able to find anything in the booklet within seconds.

Paper 2 is where grades are made and lost, and the reason is structural rather than mysterious. It carries the largest weighting, it asks for extended reasoning rather than recognition, and it is the paper where the Higher Level additions appear in full. A student who revises by re-reading notes and answering multiple-choice questions is preparing for the smaller of the two papers. Command terms matter here too: 'outline', 'explain', 'deduce' and 'discuss' ask for different quantities of writing, and marks are allocated accordingly.

The practical step for a parent is to ask the school for the mock breakdown by paper rather than a single grade. If the loss is on Paper 1A, the work is recall and pace. If it is on Paper 1B, the work is data handling, uncertainty and graph reading. If it is on Paper 2, the work is extended reasoning, mechanism drawing and the quantitative Higher Level topics. Those are three different plans, and a single overall grade conceals which one is needed.

The three places Higher Level Chemistry marks reliably disappear

  • Sign conventions in Born-Haber, entropy and Gibbs calculations
  • Curly arrows, intermediates and charges in mechanism questions
  • The Ka, buffer and titration-curve cluster taught as separate topics
  • Command terms read as 'write about this' rather than as instructions

The first is sign conventions in energetics. Enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy each carry their own convention, and a Born-Haber cycle asks a student to apply several in one calculation while keeping track of whether a step is being added or reversed. The result of a sign error is an answer of the right magnitude and the wrong sense, which no amount of checking the arithmetic will catch. The fix is procedural: draw the cycle every time, label every arrow with its direction, and never work from a remembered expression.

The second is mechanism drawing. Marks in nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and electrophilic substitution questions are given for specific features: the position of a curly arrow, the presence of an intermediate, the correct charge on that intermediate, the stereochemistry where it matters. Students who understand the chemistry perfectly well lose these marks by drawing something that communicates the idea without containing the examinable features. This is the clearest case in the whole course where a tutor drawing alongside a student on a shared screen does something that reading a textbook cannot.

The third is the pH and buffer family of calculations. Ka, Kb, pKa, pKb, buffer composition and the shape of a titration curve form a cluster where each piece is manageable and the combination is not. The usual failure is a student who can calculate the pH of a weak acid but cannot say what happens to it when a salt of its conjugate base is added, because the two were taught as separate exercises. Teaching the cluster as one connected system takes four or five sessions and tends to move more marks than anything else available at Higher Level.

05

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion, and when each part has to happen

The investigation is worth a fifth of the Higher Level grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each, and capped at 3,000 words. Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation are weighted equally, which is the single most useful fact about it and the one students most often miss. Half the available marks sit in the conclusion and evaluation, written after the practical work is over, and those two criteria are the ones most often rushed because by then the student is tired of the project.

Research design is where the piece is decided. A question that cannot be answered with the apparatus the school has, or that produces too few data points to analyse, caps the other three criteria before any data exists. A good research question names the independent and dependent variables, states how the controlled variables will be held, and is narrow enough that the method fits a realistic number of laboratory sessions. Getting that right is an hour's conversation in DP1 and a term's rescue work in DP2.

The dates below are a working schedule rather than an IB requirement; the submission deadline is set internally by your child's school and should be confirmed with the Diploma coordinator. The purpose of putting dates against criteria is to stop the two highest-value written criteria from being produced in a weekend. Evaluation, in particular, rewards specific comment on the limitations of the method actually used, which is far easier to write while the practical work is fresh.

SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION CRITERIA AND A WORKING DP TIMELINE

06

How practical chemistry is handled when the teaching is remote

  • Laboratory work stays at school, under school supervision
  • Design, uncertainty treatment and analysis are taught before collection
  • Paper 1B practised on unfamiliar data sets, annotated live
  • Report writing stays entirely with the student

This deserves a straight answer because it is the first objection most parents raise. Laboratory work for the Diploma happens at your child's school, under its supervision, using its apparatus, and no tutor changes that. What a remote tutor does is everything that sits either side of the bench: designing the investigation so the data will be analysable, teaching uncertainty and error treatment before the measurements are taken, interpreting the results afterwards, and preparing the student for the data-based questions in Paper 1B.

In practice that is where most of the marks are. A student who collects five data points because nobody told them five was too few has lost marks under data analysis that no amount of careful writing recovers. A student who records measurements without their uncertainties has lost the propagation marks permanently. Both are decided in a planning conversation, not at the bench, and both are entirely teachable over video with the method sheet on a shared screen.

Paper 1B is the other half of this. It presents data a student has never seen, from an experiment they did not perform, and asks them to process and interpret it. Preparing for it is reading practice rather than laboratory practice: identifying what was varied, what was measured, where the uncertainty sits and what the graph actually shows. Working through past 1B questions with a tutor annotating the data live is a closer match to that skill than any additional time in a school laboratory would be.

07

The Higher Level Chemistry year, laid against the school calendar

UAE schools sit the May session, so the two Diploma years have a predictable shape even though the exact session and results dates are set by the IB and should be confirmed through your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org rather than taken from any tutoring page. What makes Chemistry particular is that its heaviest content and its coursework deadline land in the same stretch of the calendar, alongside the Extended Essay and the mock exams.

That collision is manageable if it is anticipated and brutal if it is not. A student who has the investigation designed and the data collected before the DP2 mock season has a clear run at Paper 2 content. A student who still has data to collect in the mock term is choosing between two things that both carry marks, and usually does neither well. The single most valuable intervention available in Higher Level Chemistry is moving the investigation earlier, and it costs nothing but planning.

The table sets the chemistry milestones against what else is happening in a typical Diploma calendar, so a parent can see which weeks are already full. The sensible use of it is to find the current window and check whether the previous one was completed. Where it was not, that is what the first month of tutoring is for, regardless of what the current topic in class happens to be. The summer row is the one families overlook most consistently. It is the only window in the two years with no competing deadline, it is long enough to close a real gap rather than paper over one, and in this emirate many families are travelling during it anyway, which a fixed video slot accommodates without anyone rearranging a journey.

What Chemistry Higher Level support costs, and what a travelling tutor's premium buys

Begin with the gap between two published bands, because that gap is the whole argument. Online tutoring from a qualified subject tutor is quoted in the UAE market at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An in-home one-to-one visit including travel is quoted at AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate's figures at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. Monthly packages seen in the market run about AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

What the premium buys is a person in the room. What it costs, beyond the dirhams, is the size of the pool you are choosing from, and in a northern emirate that is the expensive part. Higher Level Chemistry is a specific competence: Born-Haber cycles, buffer calculations, mechanism marking conventions, investigation criteria. A tutor willing to drive to Al Hamra Village or Mina Al Arab on a weeknight is selected by willingness to travel first and by subject depth second, and for this subject that ordering tends to produce the wrong tutor.

The other bands are worth knowing for completeness. Budget online tutoring runs AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. IB and IGCSE specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with TutorChase listing AED 270, and the market's premium tier reaches AED 650 an hour, published by BartyED. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour are AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. All of these are published market figures read in October 2026 and none is an IB Gram price; our own model starts with a free first lesson and a plan agreed afterwards.

Academic honesty, the health-science routes, and the authorities behind both

The scientific investigation is assessed as the student's own work and IB academic honesty rules treat that seriously. A tutor may teach the chemistry, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, help narrow a research question, teach uncertainty treatment, respond to a draft the student has written and say plainly that a conclusion is not supported by the data. A tutor supplies no text, no data and no processed results for the report. If a service offers a finished investigation, refuse it: a malpractice finding falls on the student and can cost the entire Diploma, and this is a SERP where such offers genuinely exist.

Higher Level Chemistry is usually being taken because of what comes after it. Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, biomedical science and chemical engineering routes commonly require it, and several specify a minimum grade rather than a pass. Locally that includes RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, and regionally the University of Sharjah, Gulf Medical University and Khalifa University among others. The only reliable source for what any of them requires is that institution's own published entry requirement for the specific programme, read in the current admissions cycle, because requirements differ between courses inside one university.

Two separate authorities sit behind all of this and they are frequently confused. Private schools in Ras Al Khaimah are regulated by the emirate's Department of Knowledge, which according to u.ae regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Private tutors are a different matter: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws. For UAE university entry, Ministry of Education equivalency is a third process again, run by the ministry, and no tutor can perform or guarantee it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

What makes a weekly chemistry session survive a term is whether it sits at a time the student can concentrate. These are the communities Ras Al Khaimah families book from, with what each one does to a timetable.

Al Hamra Village

Gated housing in the south near the RAK Academy campuses, where a large share of the emirate's Diploma students are enrolled. Short pickup times here make a 4.30pm start realistic, which matters for a subject that needs a full hour of concentration.

Al Nakheel

The city-centre district on the creek side. Families here can usually manage a weekday session plus a second shorter slot later in the week, which suits chemistry because the quantitative topics reward frequent short practice over one long session.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront housing around Hayat Island. The drive back from city-side campuses runs through pickup traffic, so sessions here are better set at 5pm or later than moved every other week.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed islands with a single access route and ongoing construction. Any arrangement requiring somebody to drive onto the island on a weekday evening is the first thing to fail, which is the practical argument for remote teaching here.

Khuzam

Served by a RAK Academy campus with a consistent Diploma intake. Weekday sessions around 4.45pm work for most families, and the Ramadan shift to a post-Iftar slot happens across the whole community at once.

Al Dhait North and South

Inland villa districts where households often have children at two different campuses. Chemistry sessions here frequently sit in a staggered pair with a sibling's session, which is simple to arrange over video.

Al Qusaidat and Julphar

Older city neighbourhoods with a substantial Indian-curriculum population. Parents here often arrive comparing CBSE chemistry support with Diploma Higher Level support, and separating the two syllabuses is the first thing a diagnostic has to do.

Seih Al Uraibi and Al Mamourah

Established districts near the ring road. These are the families most likely to have tried a local general-science tutor and to be asking the sharper question of whether the tutor can teach organic mechanisms at Higher Level.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Low-density inland area where distance from any campus defines the day. A session that requires no car journey at either end is worth more here than anywhere else in the emirate.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Southern and Al Hamra campuses

Where most Ras Al Khaimah Diploma science students study. Higher Level Chemistry sets here are small, and laboratory time is shared with the Standard Level group, which shapes when investigation data can realistically be collected.

  • RAK Academy - British School Khuzam
  • RAK English Speaking School

City-side campuses

British and Indian curriculum schools serving Al Nakheel, Al Qusaidat and Julphar. Students joining a Diploma Chemistry course from these campuses most often need a short bridging block on moles and bonding before Higher Level content begins.

Where Higher Level Chemistry students from here apply

Local and regional destinations for medicine, pharmacy, biomedical science and chemical engineering, all of which treat a Higher Level Chemistry grade as a gate rather than a preference.

  • RAK Medical and Health Sciences University
  • American University of Ras Al Khaimah
  • University of Sharjah
  • Khalifa University
  • Gulf Medical University

Schools and universities are listed as the local context Ras Al Khaimah families weigh; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and claims no endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the topic, not the subject

The most useful opening message says which chemistry is failing: Born-Haber signs, buffer calculations, mechanism marks, or an investigation without usable data. That tells a tutor which of the three arrival points you are at and what the first session should actually do.

  2. 02

Free first lesson on that topic

The opening session costs nothing and runs on real chemistry. A Higher Level specialist teaches the thing your child named, drawing it out on a shared screen, and you hear how it was explained before any commitment exists.

  3. 03

A plan with the weightings and the coursework date in it

The written plan that follows names the themes, the number of sessions and where the investigation work sits relative to your child's school deadline. Paper 2 technique appears as its own block, because at 44% of the grade it earns one.

  4. 04

Fixed weekly slots on Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked for the same time each week, set around pickup reality in your community, with the same tutor throughout. Ramadan timings move to a post-Iftar slot for the whole month rather than being renegotiated weekly.

  5. 05

    Monthly review against marked scripts

Progress is checked against written work that has been marked by theme, not against how the sessions felt. Recurring errors stay on the list and clean themes come off it, and when the pace is wrong the plan changes rather than the hours rising.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Higher Level Chemistry, specifically

Not general science and not Standard Level with extra reading. The tutor matched to your child teaches the Higher Level additions as taught content: Born-Haber cycles, entropy and Gibbs work, rate equations, the Ka and buffer cluster, mechanisms and spectroscopic identification.

Mechanisms drawn, not displayed

Mechanism marks are given for arrow positions, intermediates and charges. A shared screen where the tutor and the student draw the same mechanism together, and the student's version is corrected feature by feature, is a closer match to that than any textbook diagram.

The investigation planned, not rescued

Half the investigation marks sit in the conclusion and evaluation, and all four criteria depend on a research design that produces analysable data. An hour spent on the research question in DP1 prevents a term of repair work in DP2.

Paper 1B treated as its own skill

Data-based questions present unfamiliar experiments and ask for processing and interpretation. That is a reading and analysis skill rather than a recall skill, and it gets its own practice rather than being folded into general revision.

A stated line on assessed work

Investigation support is teaching, design advice and feedback on work the student has produced. No tutor supplies text, data or processed results, because the student carries the malpractice risk and the consequence can be the whole Diploma.

Every figure attributed

The AED bands here are attributed to the rate tables and competitor pages that published them, with the month they were read. No results statistic, satisfaction figure or tutor headcount appears, because none of those could be evidenced on request.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Is there a Higher Level Chemistry specialist based inside Ras Al Khaimah?+

Rarely, and the arithmetic explains why. The emirate has a compact private-school set regulated by its own Department of Knowledge, and a Diploma cohort here may send four or five students into Chemistry at Higher Level. A group that size cannot support a second specialist, so the teachers who do teach it are fully timetabled. IB Gram's answer is to match a Higher Level Chemistry teacher wherever they are and teach one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which makes subject depth the filter instead of driving distance.

Which Higher Level Chemistry topics get compressed most often in a small cohort?+

Three, and they sit late in most schemes of work. The entropy and Gibbs free energy content in Reactivity 1, the acid-base and buffer calculations with pH curves in Reactivity 2, and the organic mechanisms with spectroscopic identification across Structure 3 and Reactivity 3. Between them these carry a large share of the Higher Level marks on Paper 2, and they land in the term when the investigation deadline, the Extended Essay and the mocks are all competing. A specific question to the school is more useful than a general one here.

Why does my son get the right number but the wrong sign in energetics questions?+

Because enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy each carry their own convention, and a Born-Haber cycle asks a student to apply several in one calculation while tracking whether each step is being used forwards or reversed. A sign error produces an answer of the correct magnitude, so checking the arithmetic never catches it. The repair is procedural rather than conceptual: draw the cycle every time, label every arrow with its direction, and never work from a remembered expression. Four or five sessions of deliberate practice usually settles it permanently.

How are marks actually awarded for organic mechanism questions?+

For specific drawn features rather than for the overall idea. Examiners look for curly arrows starting in the right place and pointing to the right place, the presence and correct charge of any intermediate, and the stereochemistry where the mechanism demands it. Students who understand nucleophilic substitution perfectly well lose marks by drawing something that communicates the concept without containing those features. This is the clearest case in the course for working on a shared screen, where the student's own drawing is corrected feature by feature rather than compared with a finished diagram.

How is the Chemistry scientific investigation marked, and where do students lose it?+

It is marked out of 24 across four equally weighted criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, with the report capped at 3,000 words. Half the marks therefore sit in the two criteria written after the practical work is finished, which is exactly when students are tired of the project. The other common loss is earlier: a research design that cannot produce analysable data caps the remaining criteria before any measurement is taken. Both losses are planning problems rather than chemistry problems.

If the tutoring is online, who supervises the laboratory work for the investigation?+

Your child's school does, using its own apparatus and its own supervision, and no tutor changes that arrangement. What remote teaching covers is everything on either side of the bench: narrowing the research question so the data will be analysable, teaching uncertainty and error treatment before measurements are taken, interpreting results afterwards, and preparing for the data-based questions in Paper 1B. In practice that is where most of the available marks are decided, because a student who collects too few data points cannot recover those marks by writing carefully.

What is the difference between Paper 1A and Paper 1B in Diploma Chemistry?+

Paper 1A is multiple choice across the six themes and rewards recall and pace. Paper 1B is data-based: it presents an experiment the student has never seen and asks them to process and interpret the results, including uncertainties and graph work. The two are sat together and share a single weighting of 36%, but they need completely different preparation. A student revising by re-reading notes is preparing for 1A only, and the 1B marks are usually the easier of the two to recover with targeted practice.

How much harder is Chemistry HL than SL in practice?+

The difference is 240 teaching hours against 150, and it is concentrated rather than spread. Both levels meet the same six themes; Higher Level adds the quantitative and mechanistic treatment of nearly all of them, which is why it feels like a second harder pass through familiar material rather than a list of extra topics. The additions that cause most difficulty are entropy and Gibbs free energy, rate equations, the Ka and buffer family, and organic mechanisms. A student can be comfortable through most of DP1 and meet all of that within two terms.

Does my child need Higher Level Chemistry for medicine or pharmacy?+

Frequently yes, and often with a specified minimum grade rather than a pass, but the requirement belongs to each institution and each programme. Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, biomedical science and chemical engineering routes commonly ask for it. Locally that includes RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, and regionally institutions such as the University of Sharjah, Gulf Medical University and Khalifa University. Read the published entry requirement for each specific programme in the current admissions cycle, because requirements differ between courses inside the same university and change between cycles.

Can a tutor help with a Chemistry Extended Essay without crossing the honesty line?+

Yes, with the line drawn before the research begins. A tutor may discuss whether a research question is answerable, advise on whether a method can generate defensible data, teach the chemistry the essay needs, explain what the assessment criteria reward and respond to a draft the student has written. A tutor supplies no text, no data and no analysis that appears in the essay. Your child's school appoints the official supervisor, and a tutor works alongside that rather than instead of it. Any offer to produce the essay should be refused outright.

What does a Ras Al Khaimah family pay for Higher Level Chemistry help, online versus in-home?+

Using published UAE market figures read in October 2026: a qualified subject tutor online is quoted at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An in-home visit including travel is quoted at AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. Monthly packages seen in the market run about AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. None of those is an IB Gram price.

When is the best time to start Higher Level Chemistry support if we have a choice?+

The summer between DP1 and DP2 is the most efficient window in the whole course, because nothing else is timetabled and no deadline is running. It is the right moment to close a groundwork gap, work through the energetics sign conventions properly, or plan an investigation method in detail. Term three of DP1 is the next best, while the research question is still open. The least efficient start is the DP2 mock term, when the investigation, the Extended Essay and five other subjects are all claiming the same weeks.

Can chemistry sessions move during Ramadan, and do they continue over the summer?+

Yes to both. During Ramadan most families here shift the weekly slot to after Iftar, and the change is made for the whole month rather than renegotiated weekly, which keeps the routine intact when the rest of the schedule is moving. Over the summer, families either pause with a diagnostic session in late August or keep a lighter fortnightly rhythm. For a student entering DP2 the summer is worth using, because it is the only block of weeks in the course with no competing deadline attached to it.

Should I ask a chemistry tutor to show a UAE permit?+

It is a reasonable question. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service is the official application route, through its app, website or e-services.

What happens if no Higher Level Chemistry tutor is free when we need one?+

You are told so, with alternatives, rather than matched to a general science tutor who learns the course alongside your child. The usual options are a different weekday at the same hour, a slightly earlier or later slot that an available specialist can take, a longer fortnightly session, or a place in the queue for a slot that frees at the end of term. For a narrow brief such as mechanism technique or investigation design, a short intensive block at an inconvenient hour frequently works better than a weekly session at a convenient one.

Name the chemistry that is failing and take the free lesson

The quickest route to a useful plan is to say which chemistry has stopped working: the sign conventions in energetics, the buffer and titration cluster, mechanism marks, or an investigation that has no usable data yet. Send that with the exam session and the current grade, and the first lesson is free, taught live online by a Higher Level Chemistry specialist at a fixed time on Gulf Standard Time. A short written plan follows, with the paper weightings and your school's coursework date in it. If the teaching is not right for your child, the cost of finding out was an hour.
