IB DP English a Language and Literature Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Most families searching for an IB DP English A Language and Literature tutor in Ras Al Khaimah are really weighing three other options at the same time: switching to English A Literature, dropping to English B, or waiting for the school's own department to fix it. This page compares all four honestly, names what each one costs, and explains how IB Gram delivers group one English to Ras Al Khaimah households as one-to-one lessons over live video.

  • Paper 1 is 35% of the grade at both Standard and Higher Level
  • The Individual Oral is marked out of 40 across four criteria
  • The Higher Level essay runs 1,200 to 1,500 words and carries 20%
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

Four options on the table, and a parent deciding between them in October

A Ras Al Khaimah family usually arrives at this search after a report card rather than after a crisis. The comment says the writing is fluent but descriptive, or that the response to unseen texts lacks analysis, and a grade five has appeared where a six or seven was assumed. From that point a parent is choosing between four things at once, and the choice is often made badly because nobody lays them out side by side.

The first option is to change course. English A: Language and Literature and English A: Literature are different subjects with different reading lists and different papers, and a student who dislikes advertisements, speeches and political cartoons may genuinely be better served by the literature course. The second is to change level, or to move out of group one altogether into English B, which is a language-acquisition course and a different qualification signal to a university. The third is to wait for the school's English department, which in a small Ras Al Khaimah cohort may be one teacher covering both group one courses. The fourth is to bring in outside support.

Each of those has a real cost and a real deadline. Course changes are usually possible only in the first weeks of Diploma year one, and almost never after the Individual Oral has been recorded. A level change from Higher to Standard removes the Higher Level essay but also removes a 20% component the student may have been doing well in. English B looks like relief and can close doors at admission. Doing nothing has a cost too, because the oral is recorded once and the mark does not get a second attempt.

This page is built as that comparison rather than as a sales pitch. Three tables set out the course differences, the level differences and what each delivery option costs in this market, with the published source for every dirham figure. The subject detail that follows is specific to Ras Al Khaimah because the school set here is small: two campuses carry most of the emirate's Diploma students, cohorts of eight or ten are normal, and there is rarely a second group one specialist in the building to give an independent reading of a draft.

On delivery, the position is plain. IB Gram does not run a centre in Ras Al Khaimah and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE — home visits are a service we offer only in India. Lessons for families in Al Hamra, Al Nakheel, Mina Al Arab or Al Dhait are one-to-one and online, over live video, with the student's own marked script or draft shared on screen and annotated during the session. The argument for that here is availability rather than price: a specialist who has marked these four criteria is not necessarily someone who lives half an hour from your road.

At a glance

  • Standard Level studies at least four literary works; Higher Level at least six
  • Higher Level sits a longer Paper 1 with two unseen texts rather than one
  • The Higher Level essay is 1,200 to 1,500 words and is marked out of 20
  • Both Individual Oral extracts are capped at 40 lines each
  • The learner portfolio is compulsory and is not itself assessed
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Group one English is a Diploma course, but a Ras Al Khaimah student arrives at it from one of three places, and the alternative a parent should be considering depends on which.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Language and Literature is one of two group one routes. Students study literary works alongside a body of non-literary material — journalism, advertising, speeches, photography, graphic texts — and are assessed on Paper 1, Paper 2, the Individual Oral and, at Higher Level, a written essay. The non-literary half is what distinguishes it, and it is the half most students have never been taught to read closely.

Ras Al Khaimah Diploma cohorts are small enough that a school may run only one group one course. Where both run, the sets may share a teacher, which is why an independent reading of a Paper 2 draft is hard to obtain inside the emirate.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Language and literature in the Middle Years Programme is assessed on four criteria covering analysis, organisation, producing text and language use. A student who consistently scored higher on producing text than on analysing it is already showing the profile that produces a descriptive Diploma essay two years later.

Two campuses in the emirate run the Middle Years Programme to year five. Students arriving into the Diploma from the Indian or British streams instead have usually never met criterion-referenced marking, and read a grade five as a near-miss rather than as a description of what the writing did.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE English as the route in

Most Ras Al Khaimah students who enter group one English come from Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE English Language and Literature. Those courses reward accurate reading and controlled writing. The Diploma asks for evaluation of how a text positions a reader, which is a different instruction, and the shift catches out students who were comfortable at IGCSE.

An A or A star at IGCSE English is not a prediction of a seven in Language and Literature. The students who struggle most in Diploma year one here are frequently the ones whose IGCSE grade told them, reasonably, that English was already handled.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma core alongside it

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay sit on top of group one English, and for a student who writes well they tend to be registered in English. That concentrates the writing load into the same terms as the Individual Oral and the Higher Level essay.

In a small cohort the same teacher may supervise the group one course and several Extended Essays. Families here should check in September which term holds the oral recording window, since it rarely moves.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The components below are what a group one grade is actually made of, listed with the level they apply to. Reading them as a single subject is how students end up strong at one and weak at another without noticing.

Paper 1: guided textual analysis

SL one text, HL two texts

An unseen non-literary text with a guiding question. Standard Level analyses one in 1 hour 15; Higher Level analyses two in 2 hours 15. Worth 35% at both levels. Marks are lost in the first twelve minutes, when a student decides what the text is doing.

Paper 2: comparative essay

HL and SL

Four unseen general questions; the student answers one on two literary works studied, from memory and without the texts. Worth 35% at Standard Level and 25% at Higher. The common failure is two separate essays stapled together rather than one comparison.

Individual Oral

HL and SL

A fifteen-minute oral on a global issue, using one literary and one non-literary extract of up to 40 lines each. Marked out of 40 across four criteria. Worth 30% at Standard Level and 20% at Higher. Recorded once.

Higher Level essay

HL only

A 1,200 to 1,500 word essay on one literary work or one non-literary body of work studied, developed from a line of inquiry. Marked out of 20. Worth 20% of the Higher Level grade and the component students start latest.

The learner portfolio

HL and SL

Compulsory and not assessed, which is why it gets neglected. It is where the lines of inquiry that become the Higher Level essay and the global issue for the oral are supposed to be developed and recorded.

Non-literary bodies of work

HL and SL

Advertising campaigns, political cartoons, speeches, photojournalism, travel writing, infographics. Students who read fiction confidently often have no vocabulary for how a layout or an image argues, and Paper 1 is drawn entirely from this territory.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

The alternative group one course. Literary works only, with a different Paper 1 and a Higher Level essay drawn from literature. It suits a student who reads novels and plays willingly and finds the non-literary material arbitrary.

English B

HL and SL

A group two language-acquisition course, not a group one course. Appropriate for genuine second-language learners. Moving a strong English speaker into it to protect a grade changes the qualification a university sees, which is why it deserves a conversation rather than a form.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Shares assessment vocabulary with group one English and competes for the same weeks. A student whose Theory of Knowledge essay is going badly is often having the same problem as in Paper 2: claims asserted rather than argued.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats are in real use for group one English in this emirate, and each one maps onto a different point in the two years. The limits of what we cover are stated rather than implied.

Weekly one-to-one over live video

A fixed weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time built around whatever the school is teaching. The tutor works from your child's own returned script or current draft on a shared screen, marking live against the published criteria rather than presenting slides.

  • Unseen non-literary texts annotated together inside the session
  • One criterion targeted per block until the behaviour changes
  • A short written note after each session naming what moved
  • Sessions recorded so an annotated script can be re-watched

Individual Oral preparation blocks

Short intensive runs timed to the school's recording window rather than spread thin across the year. The focus is narrowing the global issue, choosing extracts that can carry ten minutes, and rehearsing against the four criteria instead of against nerves.

  • A global issue narrowed until it is arguable rather than a theme
  • Extract selection checked against the 40-line limit before approval
  • Timed rehearsals with the five minutes of questions practised
  • Feedback on the student's own plan, with the talking left to the student

Paper 1 and Paper 2 sprints before the May session

A run of sessions in the final weeks aimed only at the two written papers. No new texts are introduced. The work is converting what the student already knows into the answer shape the criteria reward, under time.

  • Timed guided analyses written and marked inside the hour
  • Comparative essay plans built for four unseen question types
  • The first twelve minutes of Paper 1 drilled as a separate skill
  • A one-page list of the errors that keep recurring in this student's scripts

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Ras Al Khaimah

The tutors listed below teach group one English for the Diploma, which is a narrower job than teaching English well. Paper 1 rewards one thing, the comparative essay rewards another, and the oral is marked against a four-criterion rubric that has nothing to do with confidence.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

Alternative one: Language and Literature, Literature, or English B

These three are not interchangeable and a parent is often presented with them as if they were. Language and Literature studies literary works alongside non-literary material: advertising, journalism, speeches, cartoons, photography. Literature studies literary works only. English B is not a group one course at all — it sits in group two as a language-acquisition subject, and a university reading a transcript can tell the difference.

The reason this matters for a Ras Al Khaimah student is availability. In a cohort of eight or ten, a school may timetable only one group one course, so the choice is sometimes made by the timetable rather than by the student. Where both exist, the decision should turn on what the student can actually do. A reader who engages willingly with novels and plays and finds the analysis of a government poster arbitrary will do better in Literature. A student who is sharp about how media works and finds nineteenth-century prose a slog will do better in Language and Literature.

Moving a competent English speaker into English B to protect a grade is the decision most likely to be regretted. It is designed for second-language learners, and for a student educated in English since primary it will usually produce a high mark that says less to an admissions reader than a six in group one. There are students for whom it is genuinely the right course, and a bilingual household in this emirate is not by itself one of them.

Timing closes these doors quickly. Course and level changes are generally possible in the first weeks of Diploma year one and become impractical once texts have been studied and the oral extracts chosen. If this decision is live for your family, it is a September and October conversation with the Diploma coordinator, not a February one.

Alternative two: Higher Level or Standard Level, and the four real differences

Level is the second decision and it is widely misunderstood as reading more books. The number of literary works does rise — at least four at Standard Level, at least six at Higher — but three other differences matter more to a grade.

Paper 1 changes shape. Standard Level students analyse one unseen non-literary text in 1 hour 15 minutes. Higher Level students analyse two in 2 hours 15, which is not simply double: it demands a reliable method that can be executed twice under time pressure, and it punishes a student who reads slowly before deciding what to say. The paper is worth 35% at both levels, so the Higher Level version carries the same weight for harder work.

The Higher Level essay is the component that appears only at Higher Level, worth 20%, running 1,200 to 1,500 words on a single literary work or non-literary body of work. It is written outside examination conditions, which should make it the most reliable mark on the course. In practice it is the one students start last, because the learner portfolio that is supposed to generate its line of inquiry was treated as optional.

The weightings redistribute rather than increase. At Standard Level the oral carries 30% and Paper 2 carries 35%. At Higher Level the oral and Paper 2 drop to 20% and 25% to make room for the essay. A student who performs well orally and poorly in written examinations is therefore better served, arithmetically, by Standard Level — a point no school option sheet makes.

03

Alternative three: the school's own department, and what it structurally cannot do

The cheapest option is the school, and for many problems it is also the right one. A student who has missed lessons, or who has not read the second comparative text properly, needs the teacher and a reading schedule rather than a tutor. Clinic time, departmental revision sessions and a direct conversation with the group one teacher should be used first, and they cost nothing.

There are two things the school cannot structurally provide in a cohort this size, and they are worth naming without criticising anyone. The first is an independent second reading. When one teacher sets the task, teaches the text, approves the global issue and marks the draft, there is no second professional view available inside the building. On a component marked against criteria rather than right answers, a second reading is often what identifies the problem.

The second is unlimited one-to-one time. A teacher with two group one sets, several Extended Essay supervisions and a Theory of Knowledge allocation has a fixed number of hours. Twenty minutes on a Paper 2 draft is a generous slice of a department's week and is not enough to change a student's habit of writing two parallel essays instead of one comparison.

The honest sequence, then, is to exhaust the school first and bring in outside support for the specific thing the school cannot give: an independent marker, working one-to-one, on the student's own script, repeatedly, until the shape changes. That is a narrower claim than most tutoring pages make and it is the one worth paying for.

04

Alternative four: a visiting tutor in this emirate, priced as it actually is

Published hourly rates for one-to-one tuition in the UAE span a factor of ten, and most pages in this market publish none at all. The table below sets out bands that providers published themselves, with the provider named and the month they were read, so you can see what each figure is. None of them is an IB Gram price: our quote follows the free trial, because it depends on level, frequency and how close the recording window or the May session is.

Two features of Ras Al Khaimah push in-home figures up rather than down. Distance is the first: a tutor driving from the city side to Al Marjan Island or out to Digdaga absorbs close to an hour of unpaid travel, and that is inside the rate whether it appears on the invoice or not. Supply is the second. There is a workable pool of general English tutors in the emirate and a very small pool of people who have marked Diploma group one criteria. Scarcity in a thin market does not produce a discount.

IB Gram does not operate premises in Ras Al Khaimah and does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tuition is something we offer only in India. Lessons for families here are one-to-one and online over live video, with scripts and drafts shared on screen. The case for it in this emirate is access to a specialist rather than cost, although it is usually cheaper as well.

One practical note on paying anyone, including an independent tutor. An individual giving paid private lessons in the UAE needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and those working without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Ask to see it; a tutor who holds one will not mind being asked.

Paper 1 in twelve minutes: why strong readers stall on the unseen text

  • Text type and conventions identified before any sentence is written
  • Audience and intended effect stated explicitly, not assumed
  • One controlling idea the guiding question can be answered through
  • Feature-spotting replaced by argument; every device tied to the effect

Paper 1 gives a student a non-literary text and a guiding question, and asks for a focused analysis. It is worth 35% at both levels. The students who stall are rarely weak readers; they are usually students who read well and then write a description of what the text says rather than an argument about what it does.

The first twelve minutes decide the mark. In that window a student has to identify the text type and its conventions, work out the intended audience and the effect being sought, and settle on a controlling idea that the guiding question can be answered through. A script that starts writing before that is settled produces a tour of features — a simile here, a statistic there — with no line of argument for the examiner to follow, which is exactly what the analysis and evaluation criterion penalises.

Non-literary conventions are the gap that shows up most in this emirate, because IGCSE English rarely drills them. A political cartoon argues through caricature, juxtaposition, labelling and scale. An advertisement argues through the relationship between image and copy, through what is cropped out, through the register of a single verb. A speech argues through structure and repetition as much as through content. Students who have no vocabulary for these produce literary analysis of a non-literary text and wonder why the mark is mid-band.

At Higher Level the same method has to run twice in 2 hours 15. That makes timing a separate trainable skill rather than a by-product of competence. In lessons it is drilled as such: the twelve-minute planning phase first, against the clock, repeatedly, before any whole paper is attempted.

06

The Individual Oral: a global issue, two extracts of forty lines, forty marks

The Individual Oral is fifteen minutes long, marked out of 40 across four criteria, and worth 30% at Standard Level or 20% at Higher. The student speaks for ten minutes on a global issue, drawing on one literary work and one non-literary body of work studied, using an extract of no more than 40 lines from each, and then answers five minutes of questions from the teacher.

The global issue is where most of the mark is won or lost, long before the recording. It has to be of genuine wide significance, transnational, and visible in the everyday. It also has to be narrow enough to be argued in ten minutes. Students pick themes rather than issues — identity, power, the environment — and then speak generally for ten minutes because a theme gives nothing to argue. A workable global issue sounds specific enough to be contestable, and the five fields of inquiry in the guide are a starting point rather than a menu to copy.

Extract choice is the second failure. An extract must be rich enough to sustain close analysis for several minutes and must actually show the global issue at work rather than merely mention it. Forty lines is both a limit and a hint: the examiner expects close work on the extract, not a summary of the whole work with the extract as an excuse. Choosing a passage because it is memorable is how students end up with nothing to analyse.

The oral is recorded once, and that single fact should change how a family plans. There is no retake for a weak recording in the way there is for a weak practice essay. Preparation blocks are therefore timed to the school's recording window, and rehearsal is done against the four criteria rather than against nervousness. The student's plan stays the student's; a tutor can question it, test it and mark a rehearsal, and should not supply it.

07

The Higher Level essay, and the portfolio nobody marks

The Higher Level essay is 1,200 to 1,500 words on one literary work or one non-literary body of work studied, marked out of 20 and worth 20% of the Higher Level grade. It is written away from examination conditions with access to the text, which should make it the most dependable mark on the course. For a large number of students it is the weakest, and the reason is almost always the same.

The essay grows out of a line of inquiry, and the line of inquiry is supposed to grow out of the learner portfolio. The portfolio is compulsory and not assessed, which in practice means it is maintained for the first term and abandoned. A student with no portfolio arrives at the essay with no developed question, invents one in a week, and writes 1,400 words of general commentary on a text they have not reread with a question in mind.

A good line of inquiry is narrow, arguable and answerable within 1,500 words. It names something specific about the work — a technique, a pattern, a structural decision — and asks what it achieves. A bad one asks how a theme is presented, which produces description. The difference is identifiable in a single tutorial, which is why this component responds well to one-to-one work earlier in the year rather than later.

What outside support may legitimately do here is bounded by IB academic honesty rules and we state it rather than leaving it vague. A tutor may teach the criteria, interrogate a line of inquiry, point at a paragraph that asserts instead of arguing, and mark a draft against the rubric. A tutor may not supply the line of inquiry, add sentences to the essay, or edit it to completion. The essay has to be the student's own work, and in a market that contains providers selling finished coursework that boundary is worth stating in plain words.

08

How lessons actually run for a Ras Al Khaimah household

Sessions are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The student's own marked script, draft or chosen extract is shared on screen and annotated during the hour, which is the part that makes the difference: a student who watches their own paragraph taken apart twice begins doing it themselves before submitting. Sessions are recorded so an annotated script can be re-watched the night before a mock.

Scheduling here is set by geography and the school calendar rather than by preference. Students in Khuzam and Al Mairid can realistically start at 4pm. Students travelling back from the southern campuses to Al Marjan Island or Digdaga cannot, and an evening slot after dinner is both more realistic and more productive. During Ramadan the usable window moves to after Iftar, and a 5pm slot commonly becomes 9pm for the month; essay and oral work adapts to that better than most subjects because it needs concentration rather than equipment.

Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies are mandatory in UAE private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with instructional time calculated in 40-minute lesson units and minimum weekly totals to be met. That is real timetable space, and for a group one student it often collides with the term that holds the oral recording window, the Theory of Knowledge essay and the Extended Essay deadline. Mapping those dates in September is what creates room later.

If no group one English specialist is free in the window you need, we tell you before you pay, with a realistic date. Where the available specialist is based outside the UAE, that is disclosed too, along with what it means for timing. Several providers in this market route UAE families to a contact number that implies local delivery and does not provide it; a thin market is a fact about this emirate and stating it is more useful than concealing it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is spread across a long coastal strip and an inland belt, and the drive matters more here than in a dense city. Each pocket below sets a different realistic start time for a weekday session.

Al Hamra and Al Hamra Village

Closest to the emirate's main Diploma campuses. Students here get home early enough that a 5pm slot works, which is useful for an oral rehearsal that needs the student fresh rather than compliant.

Al Nakheel

Dense and central, close to the Indian-curriculum campuses. A fair number of group one students here switched into the Diploma at year twelve and met criterion marking for the first time.

Mina Al Arab and Hayat Island

Coastal apartments and villas with reliable connectivity across the development. Screen-sharing a 40-line extract and annotating it live works here without the usual compromises.

Al Marjan Island

The causeway commute is long enough that a visiting tutor would spend an hour driving for a one-hour lesson. Families here are the clearest case for an evening online slot.

Al Dhait North and South

Established streets with many teaching and public-sector households. Scheduling here is usually constrained by two working patterns in one home rather than by distance.

Khuzam and Al Mairid

Within reach of two older campuses, so mid-afternoon starts are possible. Students in this pocket are the only ones in the emirate for whom a 4pm weekday session is routinely realistic.

Al Uraibi and Al Qusaidat

Near the older commercial centre. Price is usually the opening question from families here, which is why the comparison table on this page names who published each figure.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Agricultural land and genuine distance from any campus. There is no practical pool of visiting group one English specialists at these addresses, and planning as though there were costs a term.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked script and two facts

The two facts are level and which component is causing the problem. The marked script matters more than any description of it: a Paper 1 response with a teacher's annotations usually shows the diagnosis directly, whether that is feature-spotting, weak audience awareness or no controlling idea.

  2. 02

We confirm a group one specialist is genuinely free

Before a slot is offered we check that a Diploma group one English specialist is available in your window on Gulf Standard Time. If one is not, you get a date rather than a substitute. A capable general English tutor will not fix a four-criterion oral problem.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson on real work

The trial runs on your child's own script, draft or chosen extract rather than a sample text. It should end with a named problem — the first twelve minutes of Paper 1, a global issue that is actually a theme, a line of inquiry that invites description — not a general impression.

  4. 04

A written plan with the weightings attached

You receive a plan naming the component being targeted and what it is worth, so you can see where the money is going. A Standard Level student with a 30% oral and a Higher Level student with a 20% essay deserve different plans, and usually get the same one elsewhere.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions, each with a written note

Every session ends with a short note on what moved and what did not, which makes progress checkable against the school's own marks rather than against impressions. The note names the criterion, not the effort level.

  6. 06

A six-week review against school marks

At six weeks we look at marked school work. If the targeted criterion has not moved, either the plan changes or the tutor does. That conversation is cheaper in November than in April, and the oral recording window is usually the hard deadline that decides which.

Three of the four options on this page are not us. Changing course, changing level and using the school's own department are real answers for real students, and a family that picks one of them after reading this has been served properly.

Group one specialists, not general English teachers

Paper 1 rewards a repeatable twelve-minute method, Paper 2 rewards comparison rather than two essays, the oral is marked against four criteria. Those are technical tasks. Improving a student's prose and leaving the criteria untouched is the common outcome elsewhere.

Rates published with their sources

Every dirham figure on this page is attributed to the provider who published it and the month it was read. Most pages in this market publish no figure at all, and two of the ones that do quote a currency UAE families do not transact in.

The academic-honesty boundary in plain words

Our tutors teach the criteria, question a line of inquiry and mark a draft. They do not supply global issues, write paragraphs or edit an essay to completion. This search results page contains providers who sell finished work; the distinction is the point.

Built for a small emirate

Ras Al Khaimah has few Diploma group one specialists and long drives between its communities. Online one-to-one is not second best here; it is the route to a specialist that does not depend on who lives near your road.

No dates we cannot verify

We publish no IB examination or results dates, because the IB's own site cannot be checked automatically and a second-hand date on a page like this would be a liability. Your Diploma coordinator holds the confirmed oral and submission windows.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Should my child move from Language and Literature to English A Literature?+

Only if the reason is the material rather than the mark. Literature studies literary works only; Language and Literature adds non-literary bodies of work such as advertising, speeches and cartoons, and Paper 1 is drawn from that territory. A student who reads novels willingly and finds the analysis of a poster arbitrary is often better placed in Literature. A student struggling with analysis itself will struggle in both. The window is practically the first weeks of Diploma year one, before texts are studied and extracts chosen, so this is a September conversation with the coordinator.

Is moving my child into English B a reasonable way to protect the Diploma grade?+

Rarely, and it should not be done on a form. English B sits in group two as a language-acquisition course, not in group one, and an admissions reader can see the difference on a transcript. For a genuine second-language learner it is the right course. For a student schooled in English since primary it usually produces a high mark that says less than a six in group one would. A bilingual household in this emirate is not by itself a reason. Discuss it with the coordinator and with whoever is advising on university applications.

How many literary works does my child read at Standard Level compared with Higher Level?+

At least four at Standard Level and at least six at Higher Level, alongside non-literary bodies of work at both. The number is the least important difference. Paper 1 changes from one unseen text in 1 hour 15 to two in 2 hours 15 while staying worth 35%, and Higher Level adds a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay worth 20% that Standard Level does not sit. The extra reading is manageable; the extra component and the longer paper are what decide whether the level was the right choice.

Why does Paper 1 go badly when my child's English is clearly strong?+

Because Paper 1 is not a test of reading well. It gives an unseen non-literary text and a guiding question, and rewards an argument about what the text does to a reader. Strong readers often write an elegant description of what the text says, list several devices, and never commit to a controlling idea. The mark then sits mid-band in the analysis and evaluation criterion. The fix is the first twelve minutes: text type, audience, intended effect and one controlling idea settled before any sentence is written.

What exactly is a global issue for the Individual Oral, and how narrow should it be?+

Narrow enough to argue in ten minutes and significant enough to matter beyond one country. The guide offers five fields of inquiry as a starting point, covering areas such as culture and identity, beliefs and values, politics and power, art and imagination, and science and environment. Students commonly choose a theme instead — identity, power, the environment — and then speak generally, because a theme gives nothing to contest. A usable global issue is specific enough that a reasonable person could disagree with the student's claim about it.

How long can the two Individual Oral extracts be?+

Up to 40 lines each: one from a literary work studied and one from a non-literary body of work studied. The limit is also an instruction. The examiner expects close analysis of the extracts rather than a summary of the whole work, so a passage must be rich enough to support several minutes of detailed work and must show the global issue operating rather than simply mentioning it. Students who choose a memorable passage rather than an analysable one find themselves with ten minutes to fill and nothing in the text to fill it with.

If the oral recording goes badly, can it be done again?+

Treat it as a single attempt. The oral is recorded once and submitted, and it carries 30% of a Standard Level grade or 20% at Higher Level. That one fact should shape how a family plans the year: preparation is timed to the school's recording window rather than spread thinly, rehearsals are run against the four criteria rather than against nerves, and the global issue is settled weeks earlier than most students settle it. Ask the Diploma coordinator in September when the recording window falls, because it rarely moves.

What makes a comparative essay in Paper 2 score well?+

Comparison rather than coverage. The paper gives four general questions and the student answers one on two literary works studied, without the texts in front of them. The commonest mid-band script is two competent essays joined by a paragraph of transition. A strong script runs one argument through both works at once, moving between them inside paragraphs, with quotations held accurately from memory. That is a planning habit rather than a knowledge problem, which is why building plans for four question types beats memorising a model answer.

What should go into the learner portfolio if it is not marked?+

The work that becomes the two components students most often rush. The portfolio is compulsory and unassessed, and it exists to develop lines of inquiry and candidate global issues as the course goes along. A student who maintains it arrives at the Higher Level essay with three possible questions already tested against the text, and at the oral with a global issue that has been narrowed. A student who abandoned it in term one invents both in a single week, which is exactly how a 20% component becomes the weakest mark on the course.

How do I tell a good Higher Level essay line of inquiry from a weak one?+

A good one is narrow, arguable and answerable in 1,500 words. It names something specific in the work — a structural decision, a recurring technique, a pattern in how a campaign addresses its audience — and asks what it achieves. A weak one asks how a theme is presented, which can only be answered with description. The test is whether a reasonable reader could argue the other side. This is usually identifiable in one tutorial, which is why the essay responds better to support in term two than in the fortnight before submission.

What may a tutor legitimately do on the Higher Level essay or the oral?+

Teach the criteria, interrogate a line of inquiry or a global issue, point out where a paragraph asserts rather than argues, and mark a draft or a rehearsal against the rubric. What a tutor may not do is supply the inquiry question, write or rewrite sentences, edit to completion, or script an oral. IB academic honesty rules make that an expulsion risk for the student, and some providers in this market sell completed work outright. We teach it, question it and mark it; your child writes and speaks it.

Can my child's own English teacher in Ras Al Khaimah tutor them privately?+

Assume not. The MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct barring a holder from tutoring students affiliated with their own school, and Abu Dhabi's regulator has published professional-ethics rules prohibiting school staff from paid private tutoring of their own enrolled students. The practical objection matters as much as the rule: the value of outside support on a criterion-marked component is an independent reading, and the person who set the task, taught the text and approved the extract cannot give you one.

Does a visiting English tutor come to Mina Al Arab or Al Hamra Village?+

Not from IB Gram. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Lessons for Ras Al Khaimah families are one-to-one over live video with scripts and extracts shared on screen. Independent visiting tutors do work in the emirate, and the published market band for an in-home hour runs roughly AED 180-500 including travel, but very few people within driving distance of these communities have marked Diploma group one criteria, which is the thing you are actually buying.

What does group one English tuition cost in this market?+

Published bands, which are not our prices, run roughly: AED 45-150 an hour for general online tutoring, AED 150-300 for a qualified subject teacher online, AED 180-500 for an in-home visit with travel included, and AED 200-450 or more for an IB subject specialist. EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate published those figures themselves. Monthly packages advertised here include AED 799 for eight online sessions. Our quote follows the free trial, because it depends on level, frequency and how close the recording window is.

It is twelve weeks to the May papers. Is the Higher Level essay still worth working on?+

If it has not been submitted, it is the best-value hour available, because it is the one component written with the text open and without a clock. Twelve weeks is also enough to change Paper 1 behaviour, since the twelve-minute planning phase is a drillable habit rather than new knowledge. What twelve weeks will not do is add two literary works to a student who has not read them, or re-record an oral. Spend the time on what is still movable and be honest about what is not.

What happens if no group one English specialist is free when we ask?+

You are told before paying, with a realistic date. We will not put a general English tutor in front of a four-criterion oral problem and describe it as the same service. Where the available specialist is based outside the UAE, that is disclosed too, along with what it means for scheduling against Gulf Standard Time. Several providers in this market imply local delivery through a contact number and deliver from elsewhere. Ras Al Khaimah is a thin market for Diploma group one English, and saying so is more useful than a confident booking.

Decide the course first, then the help

If the live question in your household is whether your child should be in Language and Literature at all, settle that with the Diploma coordinator before buying any hours, because the window closes early in Diploma year one. If the course is right and the component is the problem, send one marked script and tell us the level. A group one specialist can usually name the issue before the first lesson — twelve-minute planning on Paper 1, a global issue that is really a theme, a line of inquiry that invites description, or a comparative essay written as two separate ones. The trial lesson is free and runs on that script. If nobody suitable is free in your window, we will tell you and give you a date.
