IB DP Computer Science Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Searching for an IB DP Computer Science Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah usually means four options are on the table at once: the department your school already runs, a general programming tutor, a specialist willing to drive north from Dubai or Sharjah, or one-to-one lessons over live video. This page sets the four side by side on the things that decide a Computer Science grade — the three written papers, the developed solution and the Higher Level case study. Lessons from IB Gram are delivered online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Subject-specialist match, not the nearest available tutor
  • First lesson is free and carries no card details
  • Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time, after the school run
  • Written note to the parent after every session

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

Four ways to buy Computer Science help in a three-school emirate, and what each one cannot do

Ras Al Khaimah has a small Diploma cohort. The emirate's private schools sit mostly around Al Nakheel, Khuzam, Al Hamra Village and Mina Al Arab, and the number of teachers in the whole emirate qualified to examine Diploma Computer Science is in single figures. That scarcity is the reason the search for an IB DP Computer Science Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah behaves differently from the same search in Dubai. In Dubai a parent is choosing between many comparable people. Here a parent is choosing between four structurally different products, only one of which reliably contains a Computer Science specialist.

The first option is the school's own department. It is already paid for, it knows the teaching sequence and it is bound by a timetable that gives a DP1 class a handful of contact hours a week. The second is a programming tutor — often a working developer, often excellent at code, and often unaware that roughly half the written marks have nothing to do with writing a program. The third is a subject specialist based in Dubai or Sharjah who will travel north; this works, and the rate reflects the E311 in both directions. The fourth is a specialist who never leaves their desk and teaches over live video.

The four are not interchangeable, and the useful comparison is not which one is better. It is which one can move the specific marks your child is losing. A student who scores well on structured questions and badly on the extended response in Paper 1 has a writing problem, not a coding problem. A student whose solution documentation is thin has a planning problem that a developer may genuinely not recognise. A student who has never read a pre-released case study on a named computing scenario has a reading problem that three months of Python practice will not fix.

The sections that follow take each option in turn and say plainly what it does well and where it stops. Then they deal with the two decisions that sit before all four — Computer Science or Digital Society, and Higher Level or Standard — because a parent who gets those wrong pays for tutoring to repair a choice rather than a skill. The figures quoted throughout are market rates taken from published competitor pages and rate surveys, with the source named each time. They are not an IB Gram price list.

One thing is settled before you start reading: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visits in the UAE are not something we sell. Our in-home service exists only in India. For Ras Al Khaimah, delivery is one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing both ways, which happens to be the natural format for a subject where the student and the tutor need to look at the same code at the same time.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 are written papers; neither asks a candidate to run code
  • The developed solution is marked on 34 marks across five criteria, not on whether the product works
  • Higher Level adds a third paper built on a case study released months before the exam
  • A specialist travelling from Dubai is priced with the road included — the market band for in-home visits runs AED 180 to 500 an hour
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Ras Al Khaimah schools offer the Diploma Programme in a small number of campuses, with the Middle Years Programme feeding it and the Primary Years Programme below that. The notes below describe what each stage looks like in this emirate rather than in general.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Computer Science sits in Group 4 with the experimental sciences, which surprises families who expect it in a technology group. That placement matters: a student taking Computer Science has used their Group 4 slot, so Physics, Biology or Chemistry has to come from an elective choice or not at all.

In Ras Al Khaimah the Diploma cohort in any one school is small enough that a subject often runs as a single class with one teacher. If that teacher is also the Theory of Knowledge coordinator or the Group 4 project lead, Computer Science contact time is the first thing squeezed in a busy term. A second specialist voice is therefore less of a luxury here than it would be on a four-form-entry Dubai campus.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, with Design covering digital design and the beginnings of programming. A Middle Years student who has done the Design cycle properly arrives in DP1 already able to state a problem, identify a client and justify a chosen tool — which is three of the five Computer Science solution criteria in embryo.

Several Ras Al Khaimah campuses run the Middle Years Programme and then offer a choice of Diploma or a national-curriculum route at 16. Families who take the second path and later change their minds arrive in DP1 having never written a design brief. That gap is visible in the first solution draft and is cheaper to close in MYP 5 than in DP1.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry organised around six themes, with computational thinking appearing as a way of structuring an investigation rather than as a subject. Primary students here meet block-based coding and simple algorithms inside unit work rather than in a timetabled computing lesson.

The Primary Years Programme is the stage where a Ras Al Khaimah family first notices how thin the local pool of computing teachers is: primary computing is usually taught by a class teacher with an interest rather than a specialist. That is fine at this age. It becomes a problem only if nobody checks, around Year 9, whether the student can read an algorithm as well as write one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Computer Science is rarely tutored alone. The subjects below are the ones a Ras Al Khaimah Diploma student taking Computer Science most often needs alongside it, with a note on what each one assesses and where marks go missing.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Core topics on system fundamentals, computer organisation, networks and computational thinking, one taught option, and a developed solution. Marks leak on the extended-response questions, where candidates describe a mechanism instead of explaining or evaluating it, and on option content taught late in DP2.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, functions, calculus and a strong algebraic spine. Computing degrees usually want this rather than Applications. The commonest loss is in the unstructured Paper 2 questions, where a candidate who can perform every technique cannot decide which one the question wants.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-heavy work. It pairs naturally with Computer Science for students heading towards data analytics or information systems, but some computing faculties ask for Analysis and Approaches, so the route should be checked before the choice is locked in DP1.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics, fields, waves, electricity and the scientific investigation. Students who want hardware, robotics or electronic engineering usually need it, and taking it alongside Computer Science means two Group 4 commitments and two internal assessments running in the same term.

Digital Society

HL and SL

An inquiry course about the social impact of digital systems, assessed through written papers and an inquiry project. It is not a programming course and is not a substitute for Computer Science where a degree asks for one; the two are often confused at option-block time.

Design Technology

HL and SL

The design cycle, materials, production systems and a major design project. Students who like building things often enjoy it more than Computer Science, and the project discipline transfers directly to the Computer Science solution documentation.

Business Management

HL and SL

Organisational structure, marketing, operations and finance, with a research project. It gives a Computer Science student the vocabulary to describe a client, a requirement and a success criterion, which is exactly what criterion A of the solution asks for.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics, the global economy and three commentaries on published news articles. The quantitative Higher Level paper rewards the same disciplined working that Mathematics rewards, and the commentary word limit teaches the concision the Computer Science extended response needs.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Two written papers, an individual oral and, at Higher Level, an essay. It is the subject that most often decides whether a Computer Science candidate can write a four-mark explanation that earns four marks rather than two.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects and an essay on a prescribed title, contributing to the diploma's bonus points alongside the Extended Essay. Computer Science students often find the knowledge questions about algorithms and bias the easiest route into the course.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every Computer Science request from this emirate. All three are delivered one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing in both directions so the tutor can read code without taking the keyboard.

Weekly one-to-one through the course

A fixed slot that tracks the school's teaching sequence rather than running a parallel syllabus. The tutor asks for the school's scheme of work in the first session, then teaches a week behind or a week ahead depending on where the student is struggling, and keeps a running list of core topics the school has not yet reached.

  • Same time each week, set once around the school run
  • Topic list built from the school's own sequence
  • Marked work sent ahead of the session, not read aloud in it
  • Parent note after each session naming what was covered

Solution review blocks

A short series of sessions timed around the internal deadlines a school sets for the developed solution. The tutor reads the student's planning document, criterion A through E, and questions it; the student makes every change themselves. Nothing is written, edited to completion or supplied by the tutor.

  • Booked as a block around the school's draft dates
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback in writing
  • Client and success criteria interrogated before development starts
  • Clear record of what was advised, for the student's own reflections

Paper-focused intensive before a session

Concentrated work on one paper at a time in the weeks before an examination series, driven by the student's own marked attempts. Paper 1 extended response, Paper 2 option content and, at Higher Level, the case study each get separate treatment because they fail for different reasons.

  • Two or three sessions a week for a fixed number of weeks
  • Command-term drilling on identify, describe, explain, evaluate
  • Option content gaps closed before revision starts
  • Higher Level case-study vocabulary built from the released scenario

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

Route one: a programming tutor, and the marks that are not programming

A working developer is the easiest Computer Science tutor to find in the northern emirates and the most frequently mismatched. Diploma Computer Science is examined on paper. Nothing in Paper 1 or Paper 2 asks a candidate to run a program, and a large share of the marks sit in topics a developer may have never studied formally: two's complement representation, the fetch-decode-execute cycle, the difference between a thread and a process, network protocols by layer, and the social and ethical implications the course attaches to each topic.

The pattern is consistent enough to be diagnostic. A student taught by a developer improves on the questions that ask for an algorithm in pseudocode and stays flat on the four-, six- and eight-mark extended responses. Those longer questions are marked against command terms. 'Describe' wants a sequence of statements. 'Explain' wants a causal chain. 'Evaluate' wants judgement supported on both sides. A candidate who writes good technical prose in the style of documentation scores the first mark of a six-mark question and loses the rest.

The second thing a programming tutor rarely covers is the structure of the paper itself. Section A is short, structured and worth consistent marks to a prepared candidate. Section B is extended and is where grade boundaries are decided. Students who run out of time on Section B almost always spent too long polishing Section A. That is a timing habit, trained with a clock and a mark scheme, and it has nothing to do with programming competence.

None of this makes a developer useless. A developer is the right person to sit beside a student debugging their own solution, and the right person to explain why a particular data structure is the wrong shape for a problem. The mistake is assuming that competence covers the paper. Set the assessment weightings out, as the table below does, and the division of labour becomes obvious.

02

Route two: a specialist who drives up from Dubai or Sharjah

Start with the cheapest thing on the market and work upwards, because that is the order a budget is actually built in. A university-student tutor working online is the floor: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject teacher online is the next step up, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A recognised IB, IGCSE or A-Level specialist sits between AED 200 and 450 or more, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table reaching AED 450 and beyond. Premium named tutors go higher again; BartyED publishes AED 650.

Now add the road. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors between AED 200 and 500. Note what the extra money is actually for. The in-home band overlaps the online specialist band almost exactly, so the premium is not buying a better teacher. It is buying the tutor's travel time, and in Ras Al Khaimah it is buying a lot of it. A specialist living in Dubai Marina who takes a 5pm session in Al Hamra Village is committing something close to three hours of their evening to one paid hour, and they will price it accordingly or decline it.

That arithmetic is why the honest answer to 'can you send someone to Al Dhait on Tuesdays' is usually no, from anyone. The pool of Diploma Computer Science specialists within a 30-minute drive of Ras Al Khaimah city is very small; widen the radius to make it bigger and you have added an hour of driving to every session. Monthly packages make the trade visible. Online packages around AED 799 a month for eight sessions have been advertised, against AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

A Ras Al Khaimah family can check all of this themselves in an afternoon. Ring three agencies, ask for a Diploma Computer Science specialist at Higher Level, give an Al Hamra Village address and a weekday evening slot, and write down what each one quotes and how long the match takes. The pattern that comes back is the argument for teaching this subject over video, and it is a stronger argument than anything written here.

Route three: the department your school already runs

The option most families underuse is the one they have already bought. A Diploma Computer Science teacher in a Ras Al Khaimah school knows the scheme of work, set the internal deadlines, and will be the person who authenticates the developed solution. They also know things no external tutor can know: which option the school teaches, how the Group 4 timetable collides with the science practicals, and when the mock window falls. Before paying anyone, ask the subject teacher three questions and write down the answers.

The first is which option is being taught for Paper 2 and when it will be covered. The second is the school's internal deadline schedule for the solution, including when a draft will be read and how many times. The third is what the teacher thinks the student's specific weakness is, expressed as a component rather than a feeling. 'He is behind' is not actionable. 'He scores well in Section A and loses two-thirds of Section B' is a brief an external tutor can work from immediately.

What the department structurally cannot do is also worth stating. A teacher with one Diploma class, a Middle Years Design timetable and an extracurricular commitment has limited capacity for one-to-one time, and in a small school there is often no second Computer Science colleague to give a different explanation when the first one has not landed. IB rules also cap what any supervisor may do with assessed work: feedback on one draft, and no editing to completion. That cap applies to the school and to every tutor equally.

There is one boundary to respect here. Professional-ethics rules in some emirates prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that bars serving students affiliated with the permit-holder's own school. Asking your child's own Computer Science teacher for paid evening lessons is therefore the one route on this page that should not be taken. Verify the current rule with the school before assuming anything.

04

Route four: online one-to-one, and what has to be true for it to work

Video tuition is not automatically better; it is better when three conditions hold, and Computer Science happens to meet all three. The first is that the work is already on a screen. A student's solution, their pseudocode, their marked paper as a scan and the case study PDF are all digital artefacts. Sharing a screen in both directions is a closer approximation of sitting side by side than most subjects get, and it leaves a reviewable record of what was discussed.

The second condition is that the subject is scarce enough that geography costs you quality. That is true here in a way it is not true for, say, Mathematics. A Ras Al Khaimah family hiring locally for Computer Science is choosing from a very short list; the same family hiring online is choosing from specialists anywhere in the world who can work a Gulf Standard Time evening. For a Higher Level candidate taking the case study seriously, that difference is the whole decision.

The third condition is that the student can sustain attention without a person physically present. This is where honesty matters more than sales copy. A 17-year-old working on their own solution will usually be fine. A distractible 12-year-old may not be, and IB Gram does not pretend otherwise — but that is an argument about Middle Years students, not about a Diploma Computer Science candidate preparing for Paper 3. Book the free trial and judge it from the session rather than from a claim on a page.

Practically, sessions run on Gulf Standard Time with the lesson scheduled around the school run and, during Ramadan, around Iftar rather than through it. Work is submitted before the session so the tutor has read it. A short written note goes to the parent afterwards naming the topic, the marks discussed and the next task. If a specialist is not available at the hour you want, we say so and offer the nearest slot rather than substituting a generalist.

05

Computer Science or Digital Society: the decision that precedes all four routes

A recurring and expensive error in small cohorts is a student who wanted computing and ended up in the wrong course. The two subjects look adjacent on an options sheet and are not adjacent at all. Computer Science is a technical course with a programmed product at its centre. Digital Society is an inquiry course about the social, ethical and political effects of digital systems, assessed through written papers and an inquiry project, with no programming requirement. Both are respectable. Only one of them satisfies a computing faculty that asks for prior programming.

Where this bites in Ras Al Khaimah specifically is option blocks. A school running one Diploma cohort may offer only one of the two, or may offer both but in the same block as a Higher Level science. A student who needs Computer Science and Physics may find the timetable does not allow it. That is not a tutoring problem, and no tutor should be sold to fix it; it is a conversation with the Diploma coordinator in the term before options are chosen, and the earlier it happens the more room there is.

The second place it bites is a student who takes Digital Society expecting to learn to code, then needs programming for a degree application two years later. The repair is a self-taught portfolio alongside the Diploma, which is doable but is extra work in the worst possible year. A parent can prevent the whole situation with one question at the options evening: does this course require my child to build and document a working program, and does the degree we are aiming at require that too?

If the choice has already been made and made badly, say so to the tutor at the trial lesson. There is useful work to do either way — Digital Society students need the same discipline with command terms as Computer Science students, and the inquiry project needs the same planning rigour as a solution. What there is not, is a tutoring plan that converts one qualification into the other.

The developed solution: 34 marks, five criteria and a client who must be real

The internal component of Diploma Computer Science is a developed solution: a piece of software the student designs, builds and documents for an identified client with a real need. It carries 34 marks across five criteria, and the thing families consistently misunderstand is that the marks are mostly not for the product. Planning, design reasoning, the record of development and the evaluation carry most of the total. A beautiful program with thin documentation scores worse than a modest program documented properly.

Criterion A asks for the problem, the client, the rationale for the proposed solution and the success criteria. It is worth six marks and it is where the whole project is won or lost, because every later criterion is judged against the success criteria written here. A vague client — 'students at my school' — produces vague criteria, which produce an evaluation with nothing to evaluate against. A named individual with a stated problem produces a project that marks itself.

Criterion B, the solution overview, wants the design: the records, structures, algorithms and the test plan, presented so another developer could build from it. Criterion C, development, is the largest single allocation at twelve marks and is a record of techniques used and justified, not a code dump. Criterion D looks at whether the product works and whether it could be extended, and criterion E asks the student to evaluate against their own success criteria and propose improvements.

What a tutor may do here is narrow and worth stating out loud. A tutor may teach the criteria, question a plan, point at a weak success criterion, explain why a data structure will not scale, and give feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor may not write, complete, edit to completion or supply any part of the solution or its documentation. Nobody should offer that, and an agency that does is exposing your child to a malpractice finding, not helping them.

THE COMPUTER SCIENCE SOLUTION — 34 MARKS, AND WHAT EACH CRITERION ACTUALLY ASKS FOR
CriterionMarksWhat it asks forThe commonest reason marks are lost
A: Planning6The problem, a named client, the rationale and the success criteriaClient is a group rather than a person, so criteria stay unmeasurable
B: Solution overview6Design of records, structures and algorithms, plus a test planDesign documented after the code was written, so it describes rather than specifies
C: Development12A record of the techniques used, with justification and sourcesScreenshots of code with no explanation of why each technique was chosen
D: Functionality and extensibility4Evidence the product works and could be extendedVideo evidence recorded badly or missing a success criterion entirely
E: Evaluation6Judgement against the student's own success criteria, plus improvementsWritten in the last week, against criteria nobody re-read
07

Higher Level: the pre-released case study, and why April is too late

Higher Level Computer Science carries a third written paper built entirely on a case study released well before the examination series. The scenario names a computing context — a system, an organisation, a technology — and the paper asks questions that assume the candidate has read around it. This is the single most preparable component in the subject and the one most often left until revision season, at which point it has become a reading list the candidate does not have time to read.

The reason it rewards early work is that the case study introduces vocabulary the core syllabus does not cover. A scenario about machine learning, for example, will expect terms like training data, overfitting and supervised learning to be used accurately rather than gestured at. A candidate meeting those words for the first time in April is learning vocabulary when they should be practising extended responses. A candidate who met them in November has had five months of reading, note-making and discussion to make them usable.

A sensible schedule treats the case study as a term-long project running alongside everything else. Read it once for sense. Build a glossary of every technical term, with a definition in the student's own words and a source. Read a small amount of accessible secondary material each week — vendor documentation, a textbook chapter, a reputable technical article — and add to the glossary. Then, in the last two months, practise answering extended questions on the scenario against a clock.

This is also where a Ras Al Khaimah family feels the thinness of the local pool most sharply. A case study on an unfamiliar technology needs a tutor who can discuss it, not merely a tutor who has the syllabus. That person may not live within driving distance of Al Nakheel. They may well be available over video on a Tuesday evening Gulf Standard Time, which is the practical reason this page exists at all. Confirm the current session dates and the case-study release with your school's Diploma coordinator, since the IB sets them and revises them.

Who is legally allowed to tutor your child in Ras Al Khaimah

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted, and it is permitted by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years. Any person or agency that tells you a permit costs money, or that a permit is optional, is telling you something that does not match the published rule, and that is a useful early signal about everything else they will tell you.

The eligible categories are broad. The published guidance names teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Breadth is not the same as suitability: a permitted 17-year-old is legally able to tutor and is not the person to coach a Higher Level case study. The permit answers a legal question, not a competence question, and the two get conflated in sales conversations constantly.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are, in the words of the official guidance, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any figure quoted to you as the penalty should be treated as invention. The application route is MoHRE's own service, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days.

An operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor. A tuition centre in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute; the equivalent licensing in Ras Al Khaimah sits with the emirate's Department of Knowledge, which also approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods for private schools. IB Gram is an online tutor-matching platform and holds no regulator permit, accreditation or endorsement of any kind, and no page of ours will claim one.

The Department of Knowledge, Al Nakheel and the weeks a Diploma year has left

Private schools in Ras Al Khaimah are regulated by the emirate's Department of Knowledge, which regulates private education in the emirate and, along with Sharjah's authority, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a wider remit than inspection alone, and it is worth understanding what it does and does not reach. It reaches the school: its fees, its licensed curriculum, its assessment practices. It does not reach the Diploma mark scheme, which is set by the IB and is identical in Al Nakheel and in Geneva.

This matters because it tells a parent who to ask. Questions about fees, about whether a campus is licensed to run a programme, or about a complaint against a school go to the regulator. Questions about a subject grade, an internal deadline or a predicted grade go to the school. Questions about the assessment rules themselves go to the IB through the school's Diploma coordinator. Families in small emirates often take all three to the same person and get a frustrating answer.

The calendar then does the rest of the work. A Diploma year in this emirate runs from late August or early September to late June, with a winter break in December, a spring break around March and Ramadan moving through the calendar earlier each year. The usable teaching weeks for a DP2 Computer Science candidate between September and the May examination series are fewer than a parent counting months would assume, because the mock window, the solution deadline and the Extended Essay submission all fall inside them.

Count it backwards and the plan writes itself. Work out the school's internal solution deadline, then the mock window, then the point at which Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay take over a student's evenings, and schedule Computer Science work into what remains. Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar slots rather than being cancelled, which in practice preserves two or three weeks of continuity that families often write off in advance. Confirm every IB date with your school's coordinator, because the IB publishes them and we do not.

Academic honesty when the assessed work is code

Computer Science makes the honesty boundary unusually tempting, because code is copyable in a way an essay is not and because reusing code is normal professional practice. The Diploma does not forbid using a library, a tutorial or a code sample. It requires that the student's own contribution is distinguishable and that every borrowed element is referenced in the development record. A candidate who uses a sorting routine from a documented source and says so is fine. A candidate who presents it as their own work is not.

The line for a tutor is clearer still. A tutor may teach a technique, explain why an approach will not scale, question whether a success criterion is measurable, read a draft once and give written feedback on it, and talk through a bug the student is looking at. A tutor may not type into the student's project, restructure their documentation, supply code to be pasted in, or draft any section of the evaluation. If a session ever drifts towards the tutor holding the keyboard, the session has gone wrong and should stop.

The same boundary applies to the reflections a student writes about their own process. Those reflections are assessed and they are the student's. A tutor who coaches a student on what to claim in a reflection is coaching a false account. The honest version is slower and better: the student keeps a development log as they go, and the reflection describes what is in the log. A tutor's job is to make sure the log exists, not to improve the story told about it.

This is worth asking about directly before paying anyone, and the answer is diagnostic. An agency selling completed internal assessments exists in this market; one of them publishes a price for finished work. Ask a prospective tutor what they will do with your child's solution and listen for the word 'feedback' rather than 'handle' or 'sort out'. Then ask the school's Diploma coordinator what external support they expect to be declared, and declare it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is spread out, and where a family lives changes when a session can realistically start rather than whether it can happen. The notes below are about timing, connection and the schools each area feeds.

Al Nakheel

The administrative centre, close to several of the emirate's larger private campuses. Families here finish the school run early enough to take a 4:30pm slot, which is the easiest time to staff with a specialist.

Khuzam

A residential belt serving the British-curriculum and Indian-curriculum campuses nearby. Fibre coverage is good and a 5pm start is normal; Computer Science sessions that involve screen sharing both ways are comfortable here.

Al Hamra Village

A coastal community roughly 20 kilometres south of the city, with its own school campuses. The distance from the centre is exactly why in-home tutoring quotes rise here, and why a video lesson removes the premium rather than the lesson.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront villas and apartments with a growing school-age population. Households here often have two children on different programmes, so a Computer Science slot usually has to sit around a sibling's Middle Years timetable.

Al Dhait

Al Dhait North and South hold a large share of the emirate's family housing. The drive to the Al Hamra campuses is long enough that a 4pm session is unrealistic on a school day; 6pm onwards works.

Al Qusaidat

North of the creek, closer to Al Rams. Families here are furthest from the southern campuses, and a travelling tutor would price the round trip into the hour. Video lessons are indifferent to the distance.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed islands with apartment stock and a weekend-heavy rhythm. Saturday morning sessions are easier to fill here than weekday evenings, which suits the long uninterrupted blocks a solution review needs.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Al Nakheel, Khuzam and Al Uraibi

The city-side cluster, where most of the emirate's Diploma and IGCSE candidates sit. Several campuses here run a single Computer Science class per year group, which is why a second specialist voice is in demand rather than optional.

  • RAK Academy - British School Khuzam
  • RAK English Speaking School
  • Our Own English High School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Scholars Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • The Indian School Ras Al Khaimah

Al Hamra, Mina Al Arab and the coastal strip

The southern campuses, serving Al Hamra Village, Mina Al Arab and Al Jazirah Al Hamra. Distance from the city centre is the operational fact here: it shapes bus times, and it is the single biggest driver of an in-home tutoring quote.

  • RAK Academy - British School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - International School Al Hamra
  • Little Flower English School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Emirates National Schools - Ras Al Khaimah

Just beyond the emirate

Some Ras Al Khaimah families commute to campuses in Umm Al Quwain, Ajman or Sharjah, which puts them under a different regulator for school matters while leaving the Diploma assessment rules identical.

  • Ajman Academy
  • Sharjah English School
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah

Schools are named here as context for the Ras Al Khaimah education system. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from, or contract with any school, group or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the marked work first

Before anything is booked, send the most recent marked Computer Science paper or report and, if a solution has started, the current planning document. A component-level weakness read from real marks is worth more than an hour of diagnostic conversation, and it lets us match a specialist rather than a subject label.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with the named specialist

The first session is free and is taught by the tutor who would continue. It is a working lesson on the student's own weakest component, not a sales call. No card details are taken to book it, and there is no obligation afterwards. Judge the match from how the hour went.

  3. 03

    A four-week plan, in writing

After the trial the tutor sets out what the first four weeks cover: which core topics, which command terms, which solution criteria and in what order. It tracks the school's own sequence rather than running a parallel syllabus, so it needs the school's scheme of work to be useful.

  4. 04

Weekly rhythm, with work submitted ahead

A fixed Gulf Standard Time slot each week, with the student's work sent before the session so the tutor has read it. Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar timing rather than pausing. A short written note after each session names the topic covered, the marks discussed and the next task.

  5. 05

    Review points, not open-ended tuition

Blocks are timed around the school's internal deadlines and the mock window, and we say when continuing adds nothing. If no specialist is free at the hour you want, we tell you that and offer the nearest slot instead of substituting a generalist who happens to be available.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The subject decides the tutor, not the postcode

A Ras Al Khaimah family hiring locally for Diploma Computer Science is choosing from a very short list. Hiring over video widens it to specialists who can work a Gulf Standard Time evening, which is the practical reason an online match usually beats a local one for a scarce subject.

Published rates, attributed to whoever published them

Every AED figure on this page is a market rate with the source named, taken from competitor pages and from published Dubai rate surveys. Three of six ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars. We quote in dirhams and say where the number came from.

Screen sharing both ways, and a record of it

Computer Science work already lives on a screen. The student shares their solution and their marked paper; the tutor shares a mark scheme or a diagram. Nobody takes the keyboard, and the session leaves a reviewable trail of what was advised, which matters when the work is assessed.

A stated honesty boundary, before the first session

A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own work. We do not write, complete or supply any part of a developed solution, its documentation or its reflections, and an agency that offers to is creating a malpractice risk for your child rather than solving a problem.

Coverage stated honestly, including when it fails

If no Diploma Computer Science specialist is free at the time you want, we say so and offer the nearest slot. No competitor researched in this market discloses a coverage limit at all. A declined hour is less expensive than a mismatched term.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Is there an IB DP Computer Science teacher in Ras Al Khaimah we can hire privately?+

Possibly, but the pool is genuinely small. The emirate's private schools are concentrated around Al Nakheel, Khuzam, Al Hamra Village and Mina Al Arab, and the number of people locally who teach Diploma Computer Science is in single figures. Several of them are prohibited from tutoring students at their own school, which shrinks the list further. That is why most Ras Al Khaimah families end up choosing between a travelling specialist, priced with the road included, and one-to-one lessons over live video. IB Gram offers the second: online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE.

My son codes well but scored 4 in Computer Science. What is going wrong?+

Almost always the extended-response questions. Paper 1 Section A rewards technical knowledge in short answers, which a strong programmer usually handles. Section B asks for explanation, justification and evaluation against command terms, and good technical prose written in the style of documentation scores badly there. The second common cause is option content for Paper 2 that was taught late and revised thinly. Ask the subject teacher for a component breakdown of the mock rather than a single grade. If Section A is strong and Section B is weak, that is a writing and command-term problem, and it is fixable in a term.

Should my daughter take Computer Science or Digital Society at a Ras Al Khaimah school?+

It depends on whether she needs to build and document a working program. Computer Science sits in Group 4 and has a developed solution at its centre, assessed on 34 marks across planning, design, development, functionality and evaluation. Digital Society sits in Group 3, examines the social and ethical effects of digital systems, and requires no programming. Computing faculties usually want the first. In a small cohort the practical constraint is the option block: the school may offer only one, or may timetable it against a Higher Level science. Raise it with the Diploma coordinator before options are confirmed, not after.

Can a tutor help with the Computer Science developed solution without touching the code?+

Yes, and that is the only version worth buying. A tutor can teach what each criterion asks for, challenge a vague client or an unmeasurable success criterion, explain why a chosen data structure will not scale, read one draft and give written feedback, and talk through a bug the student is looking at. A tutor must not type into the project, restructure the documentation, supply code or draft any part of the evaluation. If a session drifts towards the tutor holding the keyboard, it has gone wrong. Declare external support to your school's Diploma coordinator.

How much does IB Computer Science tutoring cost in Ras Al Khaimah?+

Market rates rather than ours: online university-student tutors start around AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject teacher online runs roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB tuition from AED 200. An IB subject specialist sits between AED 200 and 450 or more; TutorChase quotes AED 270. Premium named tutors reach AED 650, as BartyED publishes. Computer Science usually prices at the specialist end because supply is thin. IB Gram's own figure comes from the consultation after a free trial.

Does it cost more to bring a tutor up from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah?+

Yes, and the published bands show what the money buys. In-home one-to-one visits are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors, which overlaps the online specialist band of AED 200 to 450 almost exactly. The premium is not a better teacher; it is travel time. A specialist driving from Dubai to Al Hamra Village spends close to three hours of an evening on one paid hour, so they price it accordingly or decline the booking. Monthly comparison: around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four in-home ones.

Which programming language will my child be examined on?+

None, in the written papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2 use pseudocode, so a candidate needs to read and write algorithms in a neutral notation rather than in a named language. The language only matters for the developed solution, where the student picks a tool appropriate to the client's problem and justifies the choice in the documentation. Java and Python are both common in UAE schools. Ask the subject teacher which the school teaches, because a tutor fluent in a different language can still teach the course but will cost the student time during development.

When should a Higher Level student start the Computer Science case study?+

The week the scenario is released, and not a month later. Paper 3 is built entirely on a pre-released case study, and the scenario introduces technical vocabulary the core syllabus never covers. A candidate meeting those terms for the first time in April is learning words when they should be practising extended answers. A workable schedule is: read it once for sense, build a glossary in the student's own words with sources, add a small amount of reputable reading each week, then practise timed extended responses in the final two months. Confirm the release and session dates with your school's Diploma coordinator.

Does the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge set the Computer Science syllabus?+

No. The emirate's Department of Knowledge regulates private education in Ras Al Khaimah and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods at school level. The Diploma Computer Science syllabus, its mark scheme and its deadlines are set by the IB and are identical everywhere. That split tells you who to ask: fees and school licensing to the regulator, internal deadlines and predicted grades to the school, assessment rules to the IB through your school's Diploma coordinator. Families in smaller emirates often take all three questions to one person and get a frustrating answer.

Do private tutors in Ras Al Khaimah need a permit to teach my child?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, free of charge, for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule has been published, so treat any quoted figure as invention. Ask for a permit reference before the first paid session.

Can online lessons work for a practical subject like Computer Science?+

This is one of the subjects where video is the natural format rather than a compromise. The student's solution, their pseudocode, a scanned marked paper and the case study are all already on a screen, and screen sharing in both directions is close to sitting side by side. It also leaves a reviewable record of what was advised, which matters when the work is assessed. The real variable is the student, not the medium: a Diploma candidate working on their own project is usually fine. Book the free trial and judge the match from the session itself.

My child is in DP1 with no mock marks yet. Is it too early for a Computer Science tutor?+

It is the best point to start, for two reasons. Criterion A of the developed solution is drafted in the first year, and a vague client written in DP1 damages every later criterion because the evaluation is judged against those success criteria. Second, the core topics that sink candidates later, such as number representation and the fetch-decode-execute cycle, are taught early and rarely revisited. Send whatever marked work exists, even a unit test. A specialist can read a weakness from a single marked task better than from a conversation about how the term is going.

Is Higher Level Computer Science needed for a computing degree in the UAE?+

It depends entirely on the faculty, and it should be checked rather than assumed. Some computing programmes ask for prior programming and will accept Computer Science at either level; others care more about Mathematics, and several prefer Analysis and Approaches over Applications and Interpretation. Check the admissions page of each named university your child is considering and write the requirement down before options are locked. Separately, students entering UAE universities with an international qualification go through Ministry of Education equivalency, a process the ministry runs and we do not; verify its current requirements on the ministry's own site.

What happens if no Computer Science specialist is free at our preferred time?+

We tell you, and we offer the nearest slot rather than putting a generalist in the room. Diploma Computer Science is a scarce specialism and Gulf Standard Time evenings are the busiest window in it, so a 5pm Tuesday request is sometimes met with a 7pm Wednesday offer. No competitor researched in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, which is why it is written here. If nothing works for your schedule, that is a straight no from us rather than a substitution you discover in week three.

Can one tutor cover Computer Science and Mathematics AA for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. The overlap is real: algorithmic thinking, logic and the discipline of justifying each step appear in both, and a single tutor saves scheduling effort and keeps one picture of the student. The risk is depth. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches and Higher Level Computer Science are both substantial, and a tutor strong in one may be merely adequate in the other. Ask for the specialism to be named per subject at the trial stage, and take two tutors if the honest answer is that one person cannot cover both well.

Start with the marked paper, not the price list

If you are weighing an IB DP Computer Science tutor in Ras Al Khaimah against the department your school already runs, a programming tutor, or a specialist who would drive north from Dubai, the fastest way to decide is to put a component breakdown of your child's last marked paper in front of a specialist and see what they say about it. Send that paper, book the free trial lesson, and use the hour on the weakest component rather than on introductions. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a written note to you after each one. If no specialist is free at the hour you need, we will say so.
