IB DP Biology HL Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Families searching for an IB DP biology HL tutor in Ras Al Khaimah usually describe the same thing: a child who clearly understands the biology and keeps scoring fours. In this subject that gap is almost never knowledge. It is volume, precision and command terms. This page sets out how the guide is organised, which words in a question decide the mark, where the investigation goes wrong, and what the hundred days before a May session should actually contain.

  • Four themes across four levels of organisation, taught at Higher Level depth
  • Command terms drilled against real mark schemes, term by term
  • Investigation design checked before any living material is used

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

A biology grade is decided by precision long before it is decided by knowledge

Higher Level Biology is 240 teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the course content is enormous. That is the first fact a parent needs, because it explains the most common pattern in the subject: a student who can talk fluently about immunity, respiration or inheritance, and whose written answers keep scoring two marks out of four. Biology rewards saying the right thing in the right quantity using the right vocabulary, and a student who has never been shown a mark scheme does not know that the examiner is counting specific points rather than judging an impression.

The second fact is that the guide is structured as a grid rather than a list. Four themes, unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change, are each taught at four levels of biological organisation: molecules, cells, organisms and ecosystems. Sixteen intersections, with the experimental and mathematical tools threaded through all of them. That structure is deliberate and useful, because it means the same idea recurs at different scales, but it also means a student revising by chapter order will revise the same concept four times without ever noticing it is the same concept.

The third is that Higher Level adds depth rather than new themes. Both levels meet all four themes; Higher Level goes further in almost every one, with additional content on metabolism, signalling, immunity, gene expression and population ecology, and with more demanding data interpretation. Because it is depth rather than breadth, the Higher Level additions tend to be taught as extensions inside existing lessons, which is efficient and makes it hard for a parent to tell whether they have actually been covered.

Ras Al Khaimah adds its own constraint. The emirate runs a compact set of private schools under its own Department of Knowledge, and the Diploma groups inside them are small. Higher Level and Standard Level Biology are often taught in the same room for part of the week, which is a reasonable response to small numbers and does mean the Higher Level extensions compete for attention. A parent looking for additional Higher Level teaching inside the emirate is looking for a teacher who is already fully committed.

One-to-one teaching over live video removes the geography from that problem. The tutor is selected because they teach Higher Level Biology, know what each command term is worth, and have supervised investigations against the four published criteria. Sessions run at a fixed time on Gulf Standard Time with no journey from Al Hamra Village or Al Nakheel at either end, and past paper answers are marked and returned with the mark scheme alongside, which is the single most useful thing a biology student can see.

The rest of this page covers the grid in full, the command terms that decide marks, where Higher Level marks actually go missing, what makes a biology investigation work when the material is alive and variable, the last hundred days before a May session, what the UAE market charges with sources you can check yourself, the academic-honesty line on coursework, and the mandatory UAE subjects that run alongside a Diploma timetable here.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level Biology sits at the end of a longer IB sequence, and where a student joined that sequence changes what the support has to do. These are the programmes Ras Al Khaimah families ask about.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Middle Years sciences are integrated rather than split into separate subjects and are assessed against four criteria, including inquiring and designing. A student who scored well on criterion A but poorly on criterion B in MYP 5 sciences has the knowledge habit and not the method habit, and the Diploma investigation will expose that difference in DP2 rather than in DP1.

Because Middle Years science is integrated, a Ras Al Khaimah student moving into Higher Level Biology has usually had less dedicated biology time than a British Year 11 triple-award student. The gap shows up in cell biology vocabulary and in confidence with genetics notation, both of which a short bridging block resolves early in DP1.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Biology at Higher Level is examined by two written papers and the scientific investigation. Paper 1 combines multiple-choice with data-based questions and carries 36%, Paper 2 is extended response and carries 44%, and the investigation carries 20%. The course is taught across two years with the investigation submitted in the second, and there is no separate options paper in the current guide.

In a small northern-emirate cohort the Higher Level additions are often delivered as extensions within shared lessons rather than as separate teaching. That is a sensible use of a small timetable and it is the main reason parents here find it hard to establish whether the Higher Level content has actually been covered in full.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs Diploma courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. Where Biology appears in a CP timetable the student sits exactly the same papers and the same investigation as a full Diploma candidate, so the teaching requirement is identical even though the overall qualification differs.

Few campuses in the northern emirates offer CP, so a Ras Al Khaimah student taking Biology within it may be the only one in their year doing so. That is the clearest case for subject-specific teaching from outside the emirate, because there is no peer group to learn alongside.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Biology at Higher Level is usually one of several demanding subjects in the same two years. These are the Diploma courses Ras Al Khaimah families raise alongside it most often.

Biology

HL and SL

Four themes taught across four levels of biological organisation, from molecules to ecosystems, with experimental and mathematical tools threaded through all of them. Higher Level extends the depth in metabolism, signalling, immunity, gene expression and population ecology rather than adding separate topics.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure and Reactivity across six themes, with a data booklet supplied in the exams. Students taking both sciences meet the same investigation criteria twice, and the two pieces of coursework need deliberately different timelines or they collide in the same term.

Psychology

HL and SL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches to behaviour, with research methods and statistics throughout. Biology students usually handle the research methodology well and lose marks on the critical evaluation of studies, which is a writing skill rather than a knowledge one.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

A transdisciplinary course covering ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, water, soil and climate. It overlaps substantially with the ecosystems level of the Biology guide, which helps a student taking both as long as the differing assessment demands are kept separate.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics with technology permitted throughout. Its regression, standard deviation and significance-testing content maps directly onto the data analysis criterion in a Biology investigation, and these students usually find that criterion the easiest of the four.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra-and-calculus route, with Paper 1 sat without a calculator. Biology does not depend on it, but students aiming at medicine often carry it because specific university programmes ask for a mathematics course at a stated level.

Physics

HL and SL

Themes A to E with a combined multiple-choice and data-analysis Paper 1. The uncertainty and graph work is close in character to the data handling in Biology Paper 1B, so a student doing both should learn that technique once rather than twice.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with a portfolio of three written commentaries. For a science student the demand is the structure of an evaluative argument rather than the quantitative content.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Two written papers and an individual oral, with an additional essay at Higher Level. Biology students often write accurately and too briefly, and the marks recovered here come from developing a point rather than from reading more carefully.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title. The natural sciences are a standing area of knowledge, and a Higher Level Biology student has usable material on evidence, classification and how a model gets revised.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research essay. A Biology Extended Essay is popular and difficult, because living material is variable and the data has to be defensible, and the supervision line must be clear before the research starts.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three working patterns, chosen by what the marked scripts show rather than by a package name. Most families begin with the first and add the second when the investigation deadline comes into view.

Weekly teaching with answers marked

One fixed session a week in which part of the time goes on content and part on a written answer the student produced since the last session, marked against the published mark scheme. Seeing where a four-mark answer earned two is what changes behaviour, and it cannot be done without the mark scheme in front of both people.

  • Same tutor and slot weekly on Gulf Standard Time
  • One written answer marked against the real scheme every session
  • Command terms named explicitly in the feedback
  • Short specific practice set rather than a chapter to read

Investigation design and analysis support

A block of sessions that takes a student from an interest to a research design that will actually produce analysable data from living or variable material, then supports the statistics and interpretation once the data exists. The student writes the whole report.

  • Research question narrowed until the variables are measurable
  • Replication and sample size settled before any material is ordered
  • Statistical test chosen before data collection, not after
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only

Final-term retrieval and paper technique

An intensive block in the last weeks built around retrieval practice and timed papers. The grid structure of the guide is used deliberately: the same concept is tested at molecular, cellular, organism and ecosystem level in the same session so the student sees the connections the guide intends.

  • Retrieval across the grid rather than chapter by chapter
  • Paper 1B data questions drilled separately from multiple choice
  • Full Paper 2 answers written under timing and marked
  • Error log kept by command term as well as by topic

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

Why a student who understands the biology keeps scoring fours

  • Four-mark questions want four distinct credited points, not a good paragraph
  • Approximate vocabulary is marked as wrong, not as nearly right
  • Reading is not revision in a subject this large; retrieval is
  • The same concept recurs at four levels, which revision by chapter hides

Mark schemes in Biology award credit for specific points, and a four-mark question generally wants four distinct, correctly expressed ideas. A student who writes a well-organised paragraph containing two of them scores two, and comes away believing the answer was good. Nothing in that experience teaches them what went wrong, which is why the pattern persists for terms at a time. The repair begins the first time a student sees their own answer next to the scheme that marked it.

Precision of vocabulary is the second half of the same problem. Biology distinguishes carefully between terms that students use interchangeably: diffusion and facilitated diffusion, allele and gene, species and population, immunity and resistance. Mark schemes frequently require the precise term and will not credit the approximate one. This is not pedantry on the examiner's part; the distinction usually carries the biology. But it does mean a student can be marked down repeatedly for a vocabulary habit rather than for a misunderstanding.

Volume is the third. With four themes taught across four levels of organisation, plus the Higher Level extensions, there is more content here than in most Diploma subjects, and a student who revises by reading cannot retain it. What works is retrieval: answering questions from memory, checking, and returning to the same material at intervals. That is a habit rather than an insight, and it is the single highest-value change a Higher Level Biology student can make in the last six months.

02

The grid: four themes across four levels of organisation

The current Biology guide is organised as four themes, each addressed at four levels of biological organisation. The themes are unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. The levels are molecules, cells, organisms and ecosystems. Every intersection carries content, and the point of the structure is that a concept such as adaptation or signalling is examined at more than one scale.

This has a direct consequence for how a student should revise, and almost nobody acts on it. Revising by chapter means meeting natural selection at ecosystem level in one week and DNA mutation at molecular level in another, without connecting them, even though Paper 2 questions routinely cross levels within a single theme. Revising along a theme, molecules to ecosystems, builds exactly the connections the examiners are testing, and it takes no more time than the alternative.

The table below sets out the grid with representative content at each intersection, so a parent can see the shape of the course on one page and ask about a specific cell of it. It is also the right basis for a first diagnostic: testing all sixteen intersections lightly finds the gaps far faster than working through the guide in order, and in a cohort where Higher Level content is taught as extension work inside shared lessons, the gaps are rarely where anyone expects. One cell of the grid deserves a mention on its own. The molecules row of theme D, covering DNA replication, protein synthesis, mutation and gene editing, is the content students most often report as understood and most often answer imprecisely, because the vocabulary is dense and every term has a near neighbour that means something else.

03

Command terms, and the marks they decide

Every Diploma Biology question opens with an instruction, and the instruction is not decoration. 'State' wants a single short answer with no reasoning. 'Outline' wants a brief account. 'Explain' wants reasons or causes. 'Compare and contrast' wants both similarities and differences, and an answer giving only similarities loses half the available marks however good it is. 'Suggest' wants a plausible answer the student has reasoned out rather than recalled, which students find uncomfortable because it feels like guessing.

The mark tariff usually follows the command term, so the term also tells a student how much to write. A two-mark 'outline' question that receives a page of writing has cost the student time they needed elsewhere, and a four-mark 'explain' question that receives two sentences has left two marks on the table. Learning to read the tariff and the term together is worth more in the final term than another pass through the content, and it takes about three sessions to become automatic.

The table lists the terms that cause most of the loss, what the examiner is looking for, and what students typically write instead. It works best used actively: take a marked paper, write the command term beside each question where marks were lost, and see which term appears most often. In most scripts one or two terms account for the majority of the loss, and that is a short, specific thing to fix. The habit is worth building in DP1 rather than in the final term, because by then it costs nothing: a student who reads the term and the tariff before writing is simply answering the question that was set. Students who never build it spend two years answering a slightly different question from the one on the paper, and no amount of additional content teaching repairs that.

COMMAND TERMS IN BIOLOGY, WHAT THEY REQUIRE AND THE USUAL ERROR
Command termWhat the examiner requiresTypical tariffWhat students write instead
StateA short, precise answer with no supporting reasoning1 markA paragraph of explanation that earns the same single mark and costs time
OutlineA brief account of the main points, no detail or justification2-3 marksEither one word, or a full explanation; both miss the required middle
ExplainReasons, causes or mechanisms, linked into a chain3-4 marksA description of what happens with no causal link stated
Compare and contrastBoth similarities and differences, on the same named features3-4 marksSimilarities only, or two separate descriptions never brought together
DistinguishThe specific difference between the named items, stated as a difference2 marksA definition of each item, leaving the examiner to infer the contrast
SuggestA plausible reasoned answer, not necessarily recalled from the guide2-3 marksA refusal to commit, or a recalled fact that does not address the scenario
EvaluateStrengths and limitations, then a judgement that follows from them4+ marksA list of points with no judgement, or a judgement with no supporting points
04

Where Higher Level Biology marks actually go missing

  • Genetics crosses and pedigrees set out inconsistently
  • Explaining data before describing it, losing the description marks
  • Claiming a difference the error bars do not support
  • Long Paper 2 answers written without a ninety-second plan

Genetics notation is the first reliable source of loss. Students who understand inheritance perfectly well write pedigrees and crosses inconsistently, mix up allele symbols, omit the gametes line, or fail to state the phenotype ratio in the form the question asked for. Each of those is a presentation convention rather than a concept, and each is independently marked. Twenty minutes with a correctly set-out cross, repeated across a few session, closes it permanently.

Data interpretation is the second, and it carries disproportionate weight because it appears in Paper 1B and again inside Paper 2. A Biology data question usually asks what the data shows before it asks what it means, and students conflate the two: they explain the biology without first describing the trend, and the description marks go unclaimed. Error bars and significance are the other half of it. A student who says two means are different when the error bars overlap has made a statement the data does not support, which is penalised.

The third is the extended-response question at the end of Paper 2, often worth a substantial block of marks. These reward structure: a plan, sequenced points, correct terminology, and where appropriate an annotated diagram. Students who write continuously without structure cover the content and still lose marks, because the examiner cannot find discrete credited points in the prose. Teaching a student to plan a long answer in ninety seconds before writing is one of the few interventions that reliably moves a Higher Level Biology grade in the final term.

05

A biology investigation when the material is alive and variable

The scientific investigation is worth 20% of the grade, marked out of 24 across four equally weighted criteria, and capped at 3,000 words. In Biology it carries a problem the other sciences have less of: living material varies, responds slowly, and sometimes dies. A design that would be fine in physics, two variables and five readings, produces data in biology that cannot support a conclusion, because the variation between individuals swamps the effect being measured.

The fix is decided before anything is ordered. Replication and sample size have to be set so that the analysis planned is actually possible, and the statistical test has to be chosen in advance rather than selected afterwards to suit whatever came out. Students who pick their test after seeing the data almost always pick the wrong one, and the data analysis criterion notices. Time is the other constraint: germination, growth and behavioural work need weeks, and a school laboratory booking schedule has to accommodate that.

Honesty about this matters more in Biology than elsewhere. A result that shows no effect is a perfectly good investigation and can score full marks, provided the design was sound and the evaluation is specific about why. What scores badly is a student quietly adjusting data to produce the expected pattern, which is academic malpractice as well as bad science. The table sets out common investigation types with what each one risks. Reading it before a topic is chosen is worth more than reading it afterwards, because the risks listed are not faults in the student's execution. They are properties of the material, and the only point at which they can be managed is the design stage, while the method is still on paper and nothing has been booked.

BIOLOGY INVESTIGATION TYPES AND WHAT EACH ONE RISKS

06

The last hundred days before a May session

UAE schools sit the May session, so a DP2 Biology student has a long final stretch with everything already taught and nothing left but consolidation. The exact session and results dates belong to the IB and should be confirmed with your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org rather than taken from a tutoring page. What is reliable is the shape: the last hundred days are for retrieval, timed writing and command-term discipline, and adding new content to them tends to lower the grade rather than raise it.

The plan below is built on a fortnightly rhythm because that suits a content-heavy subject. Each fortnight covers one theme across all four levels of organisation, which is how the guide intends the content to connect, and each fortnight produces written answers that are marked. The targets are deliberately countable: a parent should be able to see how many marked answers came back and what the command-term error log looks like, rather than relying on a report that everything is going well.

The final fortnight is the one families most often get wrong. The instinct is to intensify, and the right move is to reduce: shorter sessions, more frequent, on the specific topics the error log still names, with full papers already behind the student. A student arriving at a Biology exam tired has a worse problem than a student arriving with one theme slightly thin. The other common error in that stretch is doing full papers too late. A full Paper 2 taken four days before the exam produces a score and no time to act on it, which makes it a test rather than a lesson. Full papers belong in the forty-to-twenty-day window, where there is still room to turn what they reveal into practice.

What Higher Level Biology support costs, and how to check the figures yourself

Everything in this section can be verified by a parent in about fifteen minutes, which is the point of writing it this way. The published UAE market bands, read in October 2026, are these. Budget online tutoring runs roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online runs about AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An IB or IGCSE specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase listing AED 270. An in-home visit including travel is quoted at AED 180 to 500. The market's premium tier reaches AED 650 an hour, published by BartyED.

Converted to monthly figures, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts a weekly one-hour arrangement at roughly AED 240 to 600 with a budget tutor, AED 600 to 1,200 at mid range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packaged plans seen in the UAE market run about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are market rates from the named sources, not IB Gram prices.

What a parent should do with this is check it. Open the pricing page of any three tutoring providers advertising in the UAE and look for four things: whether a rate is published at all, whether it is in dirhams, whether the figure in the page body matches the figure in any structured data, and whether the page says what the rate includes. The research behind this page found three of six ranking competitors publishing no price whatsoever, two quoting in US dollars, and one whose schema price contradicted its visible text. A provider that will not tell you the number before the call is telling you something.

Academic honesty in Biology coursework, stated plainly

The scientific investigation and any Biology Extended Essay are assessed as the student's own work, and IB academic honesty rules make that an obligation with consequences that fall on the student. A tutor may teach the biology, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, help narrow a research question, teach the statistics before the data exists, respond to a draft the student has written, and say directly that a conclusion is not supported by the data. A tutor supplies no text, no data, no processed results and no diagrams that appear in the submitted work.

Biology has one specific temptation the other sciences have less of, and it should be named. When living material produces a messy result, adjusting the numbers to show the expected trend is easy and feels harmless. It is academic malpractice and it is also the thing most likely to be noticed, because the adjusted data tends to be implausibly clean. A result showing no significant effect can score full marks if the design was sound and the evaluation is specific about why the effect was not detected. That is worth telling a student before they collect anything.

The wider market context is worth knowing. Research into the UAE tutoring search results found at least one operator selling completed Internal Assessments outright. That is an integrity breach that triggers IB malpractice procedures against the student who submits it, and the student carries the penalty, not the seller. If any provider offers to produce coursework, that is a reason to end the conversation rather than to negotiate the scope.

09

The mandatory UAE subjects running alongside a Diploma timetable

A Diploma student in the UAE is not only doing the Diploma. Private schools here are required to teach Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their licensed international curriculum, and that federal requirement sits behind each emirate's own rules. Private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. For families in Ras Al Khaimah, the emirate's Department of Knowledge regulates private education and, according to u.ae, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods.

The most detailed published guidance on how these subjects are organised comes from KHDA, which regulates Dubai's private schools, and its mandatory-subjects requirements are a useful reference for understanding the structure even where a different authority applies. KHDA states that for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. It also sets instructional time on the basis of a 40-minute lesson unit and advises that any mandatory subject lesson should be at least 25 minutes.

Why this belongs on a Biology page is simple arithmetic. These subjects occupy timetable hours that a Higher Level science student would otherwise have, and they carry their own assessments and their own deadlines. A Diploma student carrying Higher Level Biology, Higher Level Chemistry, a mathematics course, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and the mandatory UAE subjects has a genuinely full week, and any tutoring plan that ignores that will be the first thing to be dropped. Where a family also needs Arabic support, note that KHDA requires teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic in Dubai schools to hold its own approval to teach those subjects, which is a credential question worth asking about separately.

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Biology sessions reward consistency more than intensity, which makes the time of day the practical question. These are the Ras Al Khaimah communities families book from and what each does to a weekly slot.

Al Nakheel

Central district near the older campuses, with short journeys home. Families here can often hold two shorter sessions a week, which suits a content-heavy subject better than one long session does.

Al Hamra Village

Gated housing in the south close to the RAK Academy campuses. A 4.30pm start is realistic, and weekend morning slots are popular here for the longer work of marking past paper answers together.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront communities including Hayat Island. Pickup traffic through Al Qusaidat makes early-afternoon starts unreliable, so a fixed 5pm slot survives a term better than a 4pm one that keeps slipping.

Al Marjan Island

Island housing with one access route and active construction. The journey premium here is real at both ends of the day, which is the plainest practical case for a session nobody has to drive to.

Khuzam

Served by a RAK Academy campus with a regular Diploma intake. Sessions around 4.45pm work for most households, and Ramadan timings move to a post-Iftar slot across the community at the same time.

Al Dhait North and South

Inland villa districts, frequently with siblings at two different schools. Staggered slots an hour apart are the norm here, which is straightforward over video and awkward for a visiting tutor.

Al Qusaidat and Julphar

Older city neighbourhoods with a large Indian-curriculum population. Parents here often compare CBSE biology support with Diploma Higher Level support, and the first task is establishing which syllabus the help is for.

Seih Al Uraibi and Al Mamourah

Established areas near the ring road. Many families here have used a general science tutor before and are now asking whether a tutor can mark a Paper 2 answer against the actual mark scheme.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Low-density inland area where every arrangement is shaped by distance. For a subject that benefits from short frequent sessions, removing the journey changes what is possible rather than merely what is convenient.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Southern and Al Hamra campuses

Where most Ras Al Khaimah Diploma science students are enrolled. Biology sets here are small, and Higher Level content is frequently delivered as extension work inside lessons shared with Standard Level students.

  • RAK Academy - International School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - British School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - British School Khuzam
  • RAK English Speaking School

City-side campuses

British and Indian curriculum schools serving Al Nakheel, Al Qusaidat and Julphar. Students joining Diploma Biology from these campuses most often need cell biology vocabulary and genetics notation built up before the Higher Level extensions arrive.

  • Our Own English High School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Scholars Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Little Flower English School Ras Al Khaimah

Where Higher Level Biology students here apply

Regional destinations for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and biomedical science, all of which treat a Higher Level Biology grade as a condition rather than a preference.

  • RAK Medical and Health Sciences University
  • American University of Ras Al Khaimah
  • Gulf Medical University
  • University of Sharjah
  • Khalifa University

These schools and universities are named as local context for Ras Al Khaimah families; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and claims no endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked paper, not a report comment

The most useful opening document is a marked Biology script. It shows which command terms are costing marks and whether the loss is in description, explanation or extended response, which a school report summary cannot show however carefully it is written.

  2. 02

Free first lesson on a question already lost

The first session costs nothing and is spent on a question your child has already attempted and dropped marks on, with the mark scheme open. That is a faster diagnostic than any assessment, and you hear exactly how the teaching works before anything is agreed.

  3. 03

A plan organised by theme, not by chapter

The written plan that follows works along themes across all four levels of organisation, because that is how the guide connects and how Paper 2 questions are built. It names the number of marked answers per fortnight rather than a vague coverage promise.

  4. 04

Fixed weekly slots on Gulf Standard Time

Sessions sit at the same time each week, set around pickup reality in your community, with the same tutor. Ramadan timings shift to a post-Iftar slot for the whole month, and the slot survives the change rather than being rebuilt.

  5. 05

Monthly review against the error log

Progress is measured by what has come off the error log, counted by command term as well as by topic. If the same term keeps appearing, the plan changes. If the log is shrinking, the hours can usually come down rather than up.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Answers marked against the real scheme

A student who has never seen their own answer beside the mark scheme that marked it does not know why a good paragraph scored two out of four. Every weekly session includes one answer marked that way, which is what changes the habit rather than the knowledge.

Command terms treated as instructions

State, outline, explain, compare and contrast, distinguish, suggest and evaluate each demand a different answer and a different length. They are taught with their mark tariffs attached and logged when missed, because in most scripts one or two terms account for most of the loss.

Revision along the grid

The guide crosses four themes with four levels of organisation, and Paper 2 questions move between levels inside a theme. Sessions follow that structure rather than chapter order, which builds the connections the examiners are actually testing.

Investigations designed for living material

Replication, sample size, run time and the statistical test are settled before anything is ordered, because biological variation defeats designs that would be adequate in physics. A null result with a sound design can score full marks; a thin design cannot be written around.

A stated line on coursework

Support is teaching, design advice and feedback on the student's own draft. No text, data, processed results or diagrams are supplied for submission, and adjusting data to fit an expected trend is named as malpractice before any collection begins.

Figures you can check without us

Every AED band here names the page that published it and the month it was read, so a parent can verify the lot in a quarter of an hour. No results statistic, satisfaction score or tutor headcount appears anywhere on the page.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Why does my daughter understand biology but keep getting half marks on written answers?+

Because Biology mark schemes award credit for specific points, and a four-mark question usually wants four distinct, precisely expressed ideas. A fluent paragraph containing two of them scores two, and the student comes away thinking the answer was good. Vocabulary compounds it: schemes often require the exact term, so allele used where gene was needed is marked wrong rather than nearly right. The repair starts the first time she sees her own answer beside the scheme that marked it, which is why one marked answer per session is more useful than another hour of content.

How is the current Diploma Biology course actually organised?+

As a grid rather than a list. Four themes, unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change, are each taught at four levels of biological organisation: molecules, cells, organisms and ecosystems. The experimental and mathematical tools run through all sixteen intersections rather than sitting in a separate unit. The practical consequence is that Paper 2 questions move between levels inside a single theme, so revising along a theme from molecules to ecosystems builds the connections being examined, while revising chapter by chapter hides them.

Which command terms cost Higher Level Biology students the most marks?+

Compare and contrast, explain and suggest, in roughly that order. Compare and contrast requires both similarities and differences on the same named features, and an answer giving only similarities loses half the marks regardless of quality. Explain requires a causal chain, and students frequently describe what happens without stating why. Suggest asks for a reasoned plausible answer rather than a recalled fact, which students avoid because it feels like guessing. Writing the command term next to every question where marks were lost on a marked paper usually reveals one or two repeat offenders.

What does Higher Level add to Biology compared with Standard Level?+

Depth rather than different themes. Both levels cover all four themes at all four levels of organisation; Higher Level runs to 240 teaching hours against 150 and extends the treatment of metabolism, signalling, immunity, gene expression and population ecology, with more demanding data interpretation throughout. Because the additions are extensions of familiar material rather than separate topics, they are often taught inside shared lessons, which makes it genuinely hard for a parent to tell whether they have been covered in full. A specific question about a named extension is the way to find out.

My son loses marks on graphs and data questions. What is going wrong?+

Almost always one of two things. A Biology data question normally asks what the data shows before asking what it means, and students jump to the biology without first describing the trend, leaving the description marks unclaimed. The other is error bars: a student who states that two means differ when the bars overlap has made a claim the data does not support, and that is penalised rather than ignored. Both are fixable in a handful of sessions using past Paper 1B questions, annotated live, with the mark scheme visible alongside the answer.

How should a Biology investigation be designed when the material is alive?+

With replication and run time settled before anything is ordered. Biological variation between individuals routinely exceeds the effect being measured, so a design with five readings that would suit physics produces data that cannot support a conclusion here. Sample size has to match the statistical test, and the test has to be chosen in advance rather than selected afterwards to suit the data. Germination, growth and behavioural work need weeks, which means the school laboratory booking has to be arranged early. These are planning decisions, and they decide the data analysis mark.

What happens if the investigation shows no effect at all?+

It can still score full marks. The four criteria assess research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, not whether the hypothesis was supported. A sound design that detects no significant effect, analysed correctly and evaluated with specific reasons why the effect may not have been detected, is a good piece of work. What scores badly, and is academic malpractice as well, is adjusting the numbers to show the expected trend. Adjusted data usually looks implausibly clean, and a student should be told that before they collect anything rather than afterwards.

How do we fix genetics questions where the biology is understood but the marks are not there?+

By treating the layout as examinable content, because it is. Marks are awarded for consistent allele symbols, for showing the gametes line, for setting out the cross to convention, and for stating the ratio in the form the question requested. Pedigree questions add their own notation. None of that is conceptual, and all of it is independently marked, which is why a student who understands inheritance can still lose several marks per paper. Ten correctly set-out crosses across a few sessions generally closes it for good.

Is there a Higher Level Biology teacher available inside Ras Al Khaimah for private work?+

Rarely, and the reason is cohort size rather than quality. The emirate has a compact private-school set under its own Department of Knowledge, and Diploma Biology groups here are small enough that Higher Level and Standard Level often share a room. The teachers who do teach Higher Level are fully timetabled. Matching a specialist over live video on Gulf Standard Time makes subject depth the selection criterion instead of who happens to live nearby, which for a course this large is the difference that shows up in the marks.

Does Higher Level Biology work for medicine and dentistry applications?+

It is usually required rather than optional, frequently with a specified minimum grade, but the requirement belongs to each institution and each programme. Locally that includes RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, and regionally Gulf Medical University, the University of Sharjah and others. Many routes also require Higher Level Chemistry alongside it. The only reliable source is each university's published entry requirement for the specific programme in the current admissions cycle, because requirements differ between courses inside one institution and are revised between cycles.

What do the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education lessons mean for a Diploma science timetable?+

They occupy real hours. Private schools in the UAE must teach Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their licensed international curriculum, and those subjects carry their own assessments. KHDA's published guidance for Dubai schools, which is the most detailed available, requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab groups in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combining them. In Ras Al Khaimah the Department of Knowledge regulates private education and approves curricula. Any tutoring plan has to fit what is left of the week after all of that.

How much does Higher Level Biology tutoring cost in the UAE, and where can I check?+

Published October 2026 market figures: budget online tutoring runs about AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online runs AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and the premium tier reaches AED 650 published by BartyED. Check any provider's own pricing page for three things: whether a rate exists, whether it is in dirhams, and what it includes.

What should the final hundred days before the exams actually contain?+

Retrieval, timed writing and command-term work, with no new content. A fortnightly rhythm suits a subject this large: one theme across all four levels of organisation per fortnight, six marked written answers, and a shrinking error log kept by command term as well as by topic. Full papers belong in the middle of that stretch, not at the end. The last fortnight should reduce rather than intensify, covering only what the error log still names, because a student arriving at a Biology exam exhausted has a worse problem than one with a slightly thin theme.

Can sessions fit around Ramadan and continue through the summer break?+

Yes. During Ramadan most families here move the weekly slot to after Iftar for the whole month rather than renegotiating weekly, which keeps a routine in place while everything else is shifting. Over the summer, families usually either pause with a diagnostic in late August or keep a lighter fortnightly pattern. For a student entering DP2, the summer is the only block of weeks in the course without a competing deadline, which makes it the cheapest available window for closing a theme gap or planning investigation logistics.

Is a private tutor working with a UAE family required to hold a permit?+

Yes, and it is a fair thing to ask about. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published. MoHRE's private tutor licensing service is the official route, through its app, website or e-services system.

Send one marked paper and take the free lesson

The fastest way to a useful plan in Biology is a marked script. It shows which command terms are costing marks, whether the loss sits in description, explanation or extended response, and which themes are genuinely thin. Send that with the exam session and the current grade, and the first lesson is free: a Higher Level Biology specialist works through a question your child has already lost marks on, with the mark scheme open, live online on Gulf Standard Time. A written plan organised by theme follows, with countable targets rather than a coverage promise.
