IB and IGCSE tutors for The Meadows families

Most families who look for IB and IGCSE tutors in The Meadows are not unhappy with the school. The teaching is fine, the reports are reasonable, and the problem sits somewhere else: the share of a Diploma or IGCSE grade that is earned outside timetabled lessons, by a sixteen-year-old, with nobody watching. This page counts that share component by component for Meadows students, then explains how IB Gram covers it with one-to-one lessons delivered online over live video.

IB & IGCSE in The Meadows

The part of the grade that nobody is timetabled to teach

The Meadows is nine numbered sub-communities of detached villas inside Emirates Living, bounded by Sheikh Zayed Road on one side and Al Khail Road on the other, with Emirates International School Meadows on its edge and The Springs and The Lakes as immediate neighbours. Plots are larger here than in The Springs, which means most households have a room that can be closed. That solves the physical problem of studying at home and leaves the harder problem untouched, which is that nobody in the house knows what the student is supposed to be doing in that room.

Here is the arithmetic that brings Meadows parents to a page like this one. In the IB sciences and in both mathematics courses, the internal assessment is 20% of the final grade. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together carry up to three points on the Diploma matrix. Past-paper practice, which is the single highest-return activity in the final six months, appears on no timetable at all. Add those up and a substantial fraction of a Diploma grade is produced in the student's own time, against criteria the student has usually read once, with a teacher who has thirty other students doing the same thing.

IGCSE has a sharper version of the same problem. Teaching finishes, study leave starts, and a Year 11 student in a Meadows villa is handed two or three weeks that will move their grades more than the preceding two terms. Most use them badly, not through laziness but because nobody has ever taught them how to run a revision week. They re-read notes, which feels productive and measurably is not, instead of working timed questions against a mark scheme and keeping a log of what the marks were actually lost for.

A school cannot fix this at scale, and it is unfair to expect it to. A subject teacher with a full timetable can set an internal deadline, give a lesson on criteria, read one draft and return it with comments. What they cannot do is sit with one student while they work out why their evaluation section keeps scoring in the middle band, or check on a Tuesday evening in February whether the exploration has moved since Sunday. That is a one-to-one job and it is the job this page is about.

What follows is the map. Which components are taught and which are not, what the published criteria letters actually reward on a mathematics exploration, every word and page limit a Diploma student has to respect in one table, what to do with IGCSE study leave, the command terms the mark scheme uses, the honest comparison between an in-home tutor in Emirates Living and an online specialist, and the line a tutor must not cross on assessed work.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Meadows children sit three systems between them, and the share of the grade that falls outside lessons is different in each. That share, rather than the content, is what decides whether tutoring is worth buying.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four published criteria, each marked out of eight and converted to a grade from 1 to 7. The criteria are the whole system: a student who understands the content but never practises the investigating or communicating strands sits permanently in the middle bands. MYP 5 adds the Personal Project, which is supervised, self-directed and assessed on process as much as outcome, and which is the first genuinely unmanaged piece of work most students meet.

In The Meadows the Middle Years cohort is concentrated in one nearby school, so the Personal Project arrives at the same time for most of the street. Families who plan for it in the summer before MYP 5 rather than in the term it is due consistently report a calmer year, because the project's failure mode is schedule rather than ability.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, normally three Higher and three Standard Level, with Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS alongside. Forty-two points come from subjects and up to three from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix. Internal assessment carries 20% in the sciences and both mathematics courses and 30% at Standard Level in economics. Higher Level mathematics adds a third paper worth 20%, which rewards sustained reasoning rather than recall.

The practical point for a Meadows household is that the school sets the internal deadlines, not the IB. Those dates sit months ahead of the formal submission and they are the only calendar that matters day to day. Get the school's internal deadline sheet, put it on the fridge, and plan backwards from the earliest date on it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE at Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel

Cambridge splits most subjects into Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C; Pearson Edexcel tiers mathematics as Foundation and Higher with a grade 9 ceiling. Paper structures diverge: Cambridge physics 0625 runs multiple choice, theory and either a practical test or a written alternative, while Pearson Edexcel 4PH1 uses two papers with practical skills assessed inside them. The board on the entry decides which past papers are useful.

The decisive feature of IGCSE for Meadows families is study leave. Teaching stops, two or three unstructured weeks follow, and those weeks move grades more than either preceding term. A plan written before study leave starts is worth more than any amount of extra teaching during it.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level, where the cluster offers it

Several British schools around Emirates Living run A Levels rather than the Diploma after IGCSE, with three or four linear subjects and no core. The independent-study load is different rather than lighter: fewer components but far deeper content per subject, and in most subjects the entire grade rests on terminal written papers. A student who coasted through IGCSE on recall meets a genuine wall in the first term.

The choice between A Level and the Diploma is usually made in Year 11 and is driven as much by breadth tolerance as by ability. A student who wants to stop writing essays should not be pushed into the Diploma core; a student who has no idea what they want at eighteen is generally better served by the Diploma's breadth.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These notes name the unsupervised part of each subject, because that is what a Meadows household is usually buying help with. The taught content is rarely the problem.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The exploration is 20% of the grade and is marked against five criteria worth twenty marks in total. At Higher Level the third paper is a long investigation worth another 20%, and almost nobody practises it until a mock goes badly. Both are unsupervised work by default, and both reward a style of sustained reasoning that routine homework never asks for.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The calculator is assumed throughout, which catches students arriving from a non-calculator IGCSE paper. The exploration is the pressure point: a weak or borrowed dataset caps the marks available under use of mathematics and under personal engagement, and the topic decision is usually made in a rush because nobody scheduled it.

Physics

HL and SL

Two written papers plus one scientific investigation worth 20% at both levels. The investigation is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and the evaluation band is where Meadows students most often sit mid-range: limitations get listed rather than weighed for direction and size of effect on the result.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms separate Higher from Standard Level. The investigation carries 20% and has a 3,000 word ceiling, which is a planning constraint rather than a target. Students who write up as they go score better than those who collect data for three weeks and write for one weekend.

Biology

HL and SL

A content-dense course decided by command terms. Outline, describe, explain and evaluate carry different expectations and different marks, and a student who answers everything as describe caps well below their understanding. Statistical treatment inside the investigation is the second recurring gap, particularly for students who came through double award science.

Economics

HL and SL

The internal assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries built on published news articles, each with its own word allowance, worth 30% at Standard Level and 20% at Higher. It is the first extended analytical writing many Diploma students produce, and marks live in diagram accuracy, axis labelling and explicit links back to the article rather than in general economic commentary.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is a timed guided analysis of an unseen non-literary text, which rewards a repeatable method rather than wide reading. The Higher Level essay has a 1,200 to 1,500 word range and is written on a text studied in class, which makes it one of the few components where early planning is almost entirely within the student's control.

History

HL and SL

The historical investigation runs to 2,200 words and is graded in three sections, with the evaluation of sources routinely the weakest. Paper answers are decided by comparative argument and by using named evidence rather than narrating a period. Students who revise content without practising argument structure plateau around the middle of the mark range.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study command and calculation accuracy decide this subject. The Higher Level research project is built on a real organisation and has a 1,800 word limit, so the choice of organisation and the availability of data matter more than the writing. Answers lose marks for listing advantages and disadvantages where a justified recommendation was asked for.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma students

An exhibition built on three objects with a 950 word commentary, plus a 1,600 word essay on a prescribed title. Both are assessed and both contribute to the matrix points. TOK is the component students most often leave until the term it is due, and it is the one where a few structured hours of coaching change the grade most reliably.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover the unsupervised part of a course. All run online over live video with one named tutor, and the choice depends on which component is at risk rather than on the subject.

Component supervision

A weekly slot attached to one unsupervised component: an exploration, a scientific investigation, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay. The session is a checkpoint with a deliverable attached, so progress is visible between the school's own internal deadlines rather than only at them. It ends when the component is submitted.

  • A named deliverable agreed at the end of every session
  • Timeline planned backwards from the school's internal deadline
  • Feedback given on the student's own draft, in writing
  • Finishes on submission, with no rolling renewal

Weekly subject teaching

One tutor, one subject, one board and level, at a fixed weekly time. This is the format for a student who is coping but underperforming across a whole course rather than failing one component, and it is the only format that builds a record a parent can read against the school's reports.

  • Same tutor weekly, named before the first paid session
  • Syllabus code confirmed with the school before teaching begins
  • Short written note after each session
  • Slot moved by message when a fixture collides

Study-leave and paper-practice block

A fixed set of sessions across the weeks when school teaching has stopped, built around timed questions, mark-scheme reading and an error log the student maintains. It assumes the content is broadly in place and the marks are going missing in execution, which is the usual IGCSE study-leave picture.

  • Built around the correct series and the correct timetable zone
  • Timed questions marked against the published mark scheme
  • An error log kept by the student, reviewed weekly
  • Fixed end date set before the block starts

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Meadows

01

Counting the Diploma hours nobody is timetabled to supervise

Ask a Meadows parent how many hours a week their child is taught and they will know. Ask how many hours of assessed work happen outside those lessons and almost nobody can answer, which is the gap this section closes. The table below separates the Diploma into components and asks two questions of each: is it taught in timetabled lessons, and who checks progress between the school's internal deadlines. The pattern is consistent. The components with the highest ratio of independent work to supervision are the ones where grades drift.

The internal assessment is the clearest case. It carries 20% of the grade in both mathematics courses and in each of the sciences, it runs over months rather than weeks, and the school's realistic involvement is a lesson or two on the criteria, one set of written comments on one draft, and a signature confirming authenticity at the end. None of that is negligence; it is what thirty students per class allows. But the consequence is that a student who is drifting in October is often not visibly drifting until February, by which point the dataset is thin and the evaluation is being written in a hurry.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay behave the same way with an extra complication: neither sits in a subject a student identifies with, so both lose every scheduling contest against a mathematics deadline. Past-paper practice is the sharpest example of all, because it appears nowhere on any timetable and yet it is the activity with the highest return in the final six months of any course. A Meadows household that treats these four things as timetabled commitments, with a named hour in the week, is doing the single most useful thing available to it.

The exploration is a project with no project manager

Of all the unsupervised components, the mathematics exploration is the one Meadows families ask about most, partly because it arrives in DP1 when nothing else is urgent and partly because the marks are so legible once you see the criteria. It is worth 20% of the grade. It is marked against five published criteria worth twenty marks between them, and the weighting is lopsided in a way that surprises students: presentation and mathematical communication are worth four marks each, personal engagement and reflection three each, and the mathematics itself six.

Read that distribution again, because it explains most mid-range explorations. Fourteen of the twenty marks are awarded for how the work is framed, communicated, reflected on and personally owned. A student who picks a difficult topic and executes it coldly can score well on the mathematics and still land in the middle overall. A student who picks a modest topic they genuinely care about, writes clearly, uses correct notation throughout and reflects meaningfully on what the result means can score higher with less advanced content. That is not a loophole. It is what the criteria say, and almost nobody reads them before choosing a topic.

The supervision problem is scheduling. An exploration has a submission deadline set by the school and no intermediate structure, so it competes with everything that has a weekly deadline and loses. The fix is a short series of checkpoints with a deliverable at each: topic shortlist, dataset or model secured, a complete first pass with notation checked, a reflection section drafted. A tutor working this way is supervising rather than teaching, and the student still produces every word, which is the only arrangement IB academic honesty rules permit.

Every Diploma word and page limit in one table

Nobody in this market publishes this, and it is one of the most useful things a Diploma parent can have on the fridge. Each assessed written component has a ceiling, the ceilings differ by subject, and exceeding them costs marks or results in work not being read beyond the limit. The table below collects the limits for the components Meadows students most often sit. It is a planning tool rather than a target list: a 4,000 word ceiling on the Extended Essay is not an instruction to write 3,980.

The limits shape the work in ways students do not anticipate. A 3,000 word ceiling on a scientific investigation means the method cannot be narrated step by step, so the write-up has to be designed before the data is collected. A 950 word commentary across three objects in the Theory of Knowledge exhibition is roughly three hundred words per object, which rules out any attempt to say everything. A 1,600 word Theory of Knowledge essay on a prescribed title has room for two developed arguments and a counter-position, and no more. Students who discover this at the editing stage lose their best material to the word count.

Two practical notes. First, confirm each limit against the current subject guide through your school, because guides are revised and this page is a summary rather than the source. Second, build the limit into the plan at the start: allocate words to sections before writing, then write to the allocation. Students who do that submit on time and in range; students who write freely and then cut spend a weekend deleting their own analysis to make room for an introduction they should have shortened in the first place.

IGCSE study leave: the three weeks that move the grade most

  • Re-reading notes feels productive and does not move marks
  • Timed questions plus mark-scheme marking plus an error log does
  • Two or three papers a day maximum, with marking time included
  • Confirm the series and the school's Cambridge timetable zone in advance

For a Year 11 student in The Meadows the decisive period is not a term, it is the stretch between the last taught lesson and the first paper. Schools call it study leave, it typically runs two to three weeks, and it will shift results more than either of the preceding terms. It is also completely unsupervised. The student is at home in a quiet villa with a timetable they wrote themselves, if they wrote one, and a pile of revision guides that feel useful and mostly are not.

The failure is specific and predictable. Left alone, almost every sixteen-year-old re-reads notes and highlights them, because that feels like studying and produces no measurable gain. What moves marks is working timed questions from the correct board, marking them against the published mark scheme, and recording in one place what each lost mark was lost for. After a week of that a student has a list of perhaps a dozen recurring errors, and almost all of them are fixable in an hour each: a unit never carried through, a command term consistently misread, a graph axis never labelled, a rearrangement always done the long way.

A plan written before study leave starts is worth more than any teaching during it. Build the days around papers rather than topics, two or three papers a day at most with marking time attached, and keep subjects separated rather than blended. Protect one full rest day a week, because a Meadows student who works thirteen days straight will spend the fourteenth doing nothing useful anyway. And get the right series and the right timetable: Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version, and the board states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone version was used.

05

Command terms are the vocabulary the mark scheme is written in

A persistent pattern in Meadows students who read well and score averagely is that they answer every question in the same register. Asked to state, they explain at length and run out of time. Asked to evaluate, they describe and score in the lower band. The command term is not decoration at the front of a question; it is the instruction that tells the marker what to look for, and the mark allocation is calibrated to it. A two-mark state question has no reward available for a paragraph of context.

The table below sets out the terms that appear most often across IB and Cambridge papers, what each one actually requires, and the answer type that loses marks. It is worth printing. The highest-value hour a tutor can spend with a student who is already competent is often not on content at all: it is taking a past paper the student has already done, covering the answers, and rewriting four responses to match their command terms exactly. The gain shows up immediately in the next mock.

There is a second-order benefit for internal assessments. Criteria descriptors use the same vocabulary, so a student who has learned to distinguish describe from evaluate in a written paper is better equipped to read what criterion D on an investigation is asking for. Students who treat command terms as a single skill shared across papers and coursework make faster progress than those who treat the exam and the coursework as separate projects, which is how most schools' timetables implicitly present them.

The home-tutor question from a Meadows villa, answered honestly

Meadows households have the space that makes an in-home tutor attractive. There is a study or a dining room with a door, so the objection that applies in a smaller townhouse does not apply here. The appeal is real: a person in the room who takes the phone away, keeps the student on the page, and gives a parent something visible to point at. Any page that dismisses that as old-fashioned is selling rather than answering.

The accounting is still what it is. Published Dubai market rates for an in-home visit run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, against AED 200 to 450 for an online subject specialist, and the difference is travel time priced into the fee rather than better teaching. Available people are those willing to drive into Emirates Living in the evening, which in practice skews towards generalists rather than Higher Level subject specialists. The start time is set by the tutor's previous booking. And the components this page is about, explorations, Extended Essays, Theory of Knowledge essays, timed paper practice, do not benefit from physical presence in any measurable way; they benefit from a specialist who has supervised twenty of them.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India, and nobody will be sent to a Meadows address. Lessons here are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, with screen sharing for drafts and a document camera for working. Supervision without authorship: the line on assessed work

  • Legitimate: reading the criteria together, commenting on the student's draft
  • Legitimate: checkpoints planned backwards from the school's internal deadline
  • Never: authoring any sentence, calculation or diagram in a submission
  • Never: supplying syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes as files

Everything above describes a tutor supervising work that must be entirely the student's own, so the boundary deserves stating precisely rather than implied. Under IB academic honesty rules an internal assessment, an Extended Essay and a Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own work, authenticated by a school supervisor and declared by the school. A malpractice finding falls on the student, not on whoever was paid. At least one page competing for these searches sells finished Internal Assessments outright, and a Meadows parent should recognise that for what it is.

What supervision legitimately includes is a long list. Teaching what the published criteria reward, and reading them with the student line by line. Reading a draft the student produced and returning written comments and questions on it. Asking the question that exposes a method the student cannot yet explain. Checking notation, units and labelling. Planning a timeline backwards from the school's internal deadline and holding the student to intermediate checkpoints. Teaching the statistical treatment a dataset needs. None of that puts a tutor's sentence into a submission.

What it excludes is simple to state: no part of a submitted assessment should exist unless the student made it. No sentence, no calculation, no diagram, no restructured paragraph typed by somebody else. We also do not pass on board materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB, and the correct behaviour is to cite and link the official source rather than hand a family a copy. If a provider offers your child finished coursework, that is an integrity problem with an invoice attached.

08

Starting from The Meadows, with the limits stated up front

The useful first message is short and factual: the school, the board, the syllabus code on the entry, the level, which component is at risk and when the next internal deadline falls. If the concern is an exploration or an Extended Essay, say what stage it is at honestly, including if the answer is that nothing has been written. We then name the tutor who would supervise it, where they are based, and what they have taught at that exact level, before anything is paid. A trial session follows at a time set around the school bus.

The limits are worth stating now. Coverage is uneven in narrow Higher Level subjects, in less common languages and in uncommon Pearson Edexcel options, and the honest response is one of three things rather than a hopeful match: a different hour where the right specialist is free, an adjacent level or board where the overlap is genuine and the gap can be named, or a plain statement that we cannot cover it. Component supervision also has a timing limit. An exploration with ten days left is a damage-limitation exercise, and we will say so rather than imply otherwise.

On money and data: the rate is agreed before the first paid session, no figure on this page is a quote, and there is no outcome-linked refund scheme because an honest one is difficult to write and easy to misuse. Forms on this site ask for a parent's contact details and the child's year, board and subject, which is what matching needs. A photograph, a grade history and a teacher's name are not required to arrange a trial. UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection governs the handling of that data, and the privacy link explains how to have it removed.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Meadows

The Meadows sits inside Emirates Living and shares its schools, buses and sports fixtures with the communities around it. These notes are about what each neighbour means for a study timetable rather than for a property search.

The Springs

Immediately adjacent, with smaller townhouses and the same bus routes. Springs households usually run sequential evening slots because there is one workable table; Meadows households can often run parallel sessions in two rooms, which changes what is schedulable.

The Lakes

Lower-density villas with later pickups and the same school calendar. Lakes and Meadows students frequently share internal deadline dates, which makes a joint push on an exploration or a Personal Project in the same fortnight genuinely workable.

Emirates Hills

Large villas, with Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills and Dubai British School Emirates Hills inside the same perimeter. This is the nearest point of comparison for Higher Level subject choices, because the Diploma cohorts overlap socially.

The Greens and The Views

Apartment communities on the Sheikh Zayed Road side, home to Regent International School. Higher tenancy turnover means more mid-year arrivals, and a mid-year arrival into Year 10 is the hardest catch-up case in this cluster.

Al Barsha South

Where several larger campuses sit, including Nord Anglia International School Dubai. The Al Khail Road run is quick before eight and unreliable after five, which is why evening sessions for children at these schools start after six.

Dubai Marina and JLT

A fifteen-minute drive at a quiet hour and far longer at the wrong one. Meadows families with older children at sixth form in this direction generally abandon weekday in-person arrangements entirely by the second term.

Jumeirah Park

Villa community across Sheikh Zayed Road with its own British provision. Families who move between here and The Meadows keep the same online slot, because a weekly video lesson survives a house move in a way a local arrangement does not.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not just the subject

Tutoring for an exploration, an Extended Essay or a study-leave block is a different job from weekly subject teaching, and the plan differs accordingly. Tell us which component is at risk, what stage it is at, and the date of the school's next internal deadline. Those three facts shape everything that follows.

  2. 02

Send the syllabus code and the level

Cambridge 0580 Extended and Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Higher are both called IGCSE Maths and are different examinations with different papers and calculator rules. The code on the school's entry confirmation removes the guesswork, and for Diploma students the Higher or Standard Level split decides which papers matter.

  3. 03

We name the tutor before any payment

You are told who would teach, where they are based, which board and level they cover and what they have supervised at that level. If nobody suitable is free at the hour you need, you hear that rather than being matched to a generalist who will work hard against the wrong specification.

  4. 04

A checkpoint plan after the first session

For component work you get a short written plan with dated checkpoints running back from the school's internal deadline, each with a deliverable the student produces. For weekly subject teaching you get the list of components at risk and the order they will be worked on. Either way the student owns the deliverables.

  5. 05

Review at the school's reporting points

Progress conversations happen when the school issues a report, so independent evidence is in the room rather than only our own session notes. At each review there is a decision rather than a drift: continue, change the component focus, change the tutor, or stop because the job is done.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work on the part nobody supervises

Explorations, investigations, Extended Essays, Theory of Knowledge and timed paper practice are where the unsupervised share of a grade lives. A tutor who only re-teaches content is duplicating the school at a price. The useful work is almost always on the components that appear on no timetable.

Criteria and limits, read properly

Fourteen of the twenty marks on a mathematics exploration are awarded for framing, communication, engagement and reflection rather than for advanced content. Most students never read that distribution. Sessions here start with the published criteria and the word limit, because those decide the ceiling before any work begins.

One board, one level, one named tutor

A tutor here teaches one named syllabus rather than a subject in general, which is why we ask for the code rather than the subject name. It is also the reason an online match beats a local one: the right Higher Level specialist is unlikely to live within a short drive of Meadows 4.

A line on assessed work that does not move

Tutors teach criteria, read drafts the student wrote and give written feedback. Nobody authors any part of a submission, and we do not hand over board syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes. The official source is where those belong, and we link it rather than copy it.

Stated coverage limits, including the timing ones

Some Higher Level subjects and uncommon options are thinly covered, and some component work starts too late to rescue. You get the real position in the first reply, including a plain no, rather than a match that looks like coverage and an exploration that was never going to be finished properly.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Meadows: your questions answered

How much of an IB Diploma grade is earned outside timetabled lessons?+

Enough to matter. The internal assessment carries 20% of the grade in both mathematics courses and in each of the sciences, and 30% at Standard Level in economics. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge contribute up to three points on the Diploma matrix, and both are largely self-directed. Timed past-paper practice, the highest-return activity in the final six months, appears on no timetable at all. A school can set deadlines, teach the criteria once and comment on one draft; what it cannot do is check on a Tuesday evening whether the work has moved since Sunday.

My child's exploration has not started and the deadline is in six weeks. Is that recoverable?+

Usually, but the shape of the work changes. With six weeks the sensible route is a modest topic the student genuinely owns, a dataset or model that is already accessible, and a write-up designed before any analysis begins. That protects the criteria that carry most of the marks: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement and reflection are worth fourteen of the twenty marks between them. With ten days left it becomes damage limitation and we will say so. Nothing in this arrangement involves anyone other than the student producing the work.

What are the word limits on IB coursework?+

They differ by component. The Extended Essay has a 4,000 word ceiling; the Theory of Knowledge essay 1,600 words and the exhibition commentary 950 words across three objects; the scientific investigation in biology, chemistry and physics 3,000 words; the history historical investigation 2,200 words; the English A Higher Level essay a 1,200 to 1,500 word range; the Business Management Higher Level research project 1,800 words. The mathematics exploration is guided by a recommended 12 to 20 pages rather than a word count. Confirm each against the current subject guide through your school, because guides are revised periodically.

Is Theory of Knowledge worth paying for help with?+

It is one of the better-value components to support, for an unintuitive reason: it is assessed, it contributes to the matrix points, and it is thinly timetabled, so a few structured hours move it further than the same hours in a subject that is taught five times a week. The exhibition needs three objects that can each be justified in roughly three hundred words, and the essay needs two developed arguments plus a counter-position inside 1,600 words. Students who leave both until the term they are due consistently score below their ability, not through weakness but through compression.

How should a Year 11 student use the study-leave weeks before IGCSEs?+

With a plan written before study leave starts, built around papers rather than topics. Two or three timed papers a day at most, each marked against the published mark scheme for the correct board, with every lost mark logged and categorised. After a week the log usually shows about a dozen recurring errors, most fixable in an hour each: a unit never carried through, a command term consistently misread, an unlabelled axis. Keep subjects separated rather than blended, and protect one full rest day a week, because thirteen days straight produces a wasted fourteenth.

Why does my child score well in class and badly in exams?+

The most common cause we see is command terms. A student answers every question in the same register: asked to state, they explain at length and lose time; asked to evaluate, they describe and sit in the lower band. The mark allocation is calibrated to the command term, so a two-mark state question has no reward available for a paragraph. The fastest fix is to take a paper the student has already done, cover the answers and rewrite four responses to match their command terms exactly. The gain usually shows in the next mock.

Can a tutor visit our villa in Meadows 6 instead of teaching online?+

Not through us. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Tuition for Meadows families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, with screen sharing for drafts and a document camera for written working. For context, the published Dubai market rate for an in-home visit runs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 200 to 450 for an online subject specialist, and the difference is travel priced into the hour. The components this page covers gain nothing measurable from physical presence.

What does Diploma coursework support cost per hour in this part of Dubai?+

Published Dubai market bands, surveyed October 2026, put an IB or IGCSE subject specialist at AED 200 to 450 or more per hour and a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300. Generalist and university-student tutors are quoted from AED 45 to 150, in-home visits at AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the fee, and named or examiner-branded tutors at AED 500 to 650 and above. Those figures come from published platform and agency rate pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. They are market rates, not our price list.

Does the school not supervise the Extended Essay already?+

It does, at set meeting points, and that supervision is a genuine requirement rather than a formality: the supervisor authenticates the work and the school declares it. What the structure does not provide is anything between those meetings. A student with 4,000 words to produce over several months, competing against weekly deadlines in six subjects, will deprioritise it unless something external creates intermediate pressure. Supervision support fills that gap with dated checkpoints and a deliverable at each, while the student writes every word themselves.

Is A Level a lighter independent-study load than the Diploma?+

Different rather than lighter. A Level removes the core, so there is no Extended Essay, no Theory of Knowledge and usually no equivalent of the internal assessment in several subjects, which cuts the number of unsupervised components. In exchange the content per subject is deeper and in most subjects the entire grade rests on terminal written papers, which places the whole weight on timed practice that no timetable covers. A student who coasted through IGCSE on recall meets that wall in the first term either way.

Should both my children have the same tutor if they study different boards?+

Only where the two demands are the same skill at different depths. A Year 11 Cambridge 0580 Extended student and a Year 8 student both need algebraic fluency, so one tutor can plan across both. A Diploma Higher Level chemist and a Year 10 Pearson Edexcel student do not, because Higher Level organic depth sits far above the IGCSE specification. A Middle Years student needing Personal Project supervision and a Diploma student needing timed unseen analysis are different jobs. Where boards differ we use two specialists on one shared calendar rather than one compromise.

Does a tutor need a UAE permit to teach my child privately?+

Yes. Private tuition in the UAE operates under a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, via the smart app, website or e-services system. Anyone tutoring without a permit faces fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so distrust any specific figure.

Can lessons keep running while we travel over the long summer?+

Yes, and the summer is often the best window for component work. Because lessons are delivered online over live video, the same tutor and usually the same slot continue from wherever the family is, with an allowance for the time difference. Summer is when an exploration topic can be settled without six other subjects competing, when a Middle Years student can prepare for the Personal Project, and when a student moving into the Diploma can close the quantitative gaps in mathematics and the sciences. During Ramadan sessions generally move to a post-Iftar slot, agreed in advance.

What happens if nobody is available for a subject like Higher Level Philosophy?+

You get told plainly. Coverage in narrow Higher Level subjects, less common languages and uncommon Pearson Edexcel options is genuinely uneven, and the standard industry response is to seat a generalist in front of the student and hope. We will give whichever of three answers is true: a different hour of the week where the right specialist is free, an adjacent level or board where the content overlap is real and the gap can be named, or a clear statement that we cannot cover it with a suggestion of where to look. A match that only looks like coverage costs a Diploma student a term.

Start with the component, not the subject

If something in your house has a deadline and no supervision, that is the thing to tell us about. Send the school, the board, the syllabus code, the component and the next internal deadline, and you will get back the name of the person who could supervise it and the hours they have free. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video. If the honest answer is that the deadline is too close for the work to be done properly, you will hear that in the first reply rather than after four paid sessions, and you can spend the time on the papers instead.
