IB Extended Essay Help in the UAE

IB Extended Essay help in the UAE usually starts with one question: what does it cost, and what does the money actually buy. This page answers both in AED, with the market bands and where they come from, before it sets out the 34 marks your child is protecting. Mentoring is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, so a candidate in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah works with a subject specialist instead of whoever happens to be free nearby.

  • One-to-one Extended Essay mentoring delivered live online in Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

The cost question, answered before anything else

Extended Essay support in the UAE is bought in hours, not in packages. Across the market, a qualified subject tutor working online quotes roughly AED 150–300 an hour, an IB or IGCSE specialist AED 200–450 and upwards, and a premium named provider AED 500–650 or more. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts the specialist band at AED 200–450+, and the in-home band at AED 180–350. Those are market figures from October 2026, quoted as the market and not as an IB Gram price list. The honest version of our own position is that the first lesson is free, the rate depends on the subject and the level of specialism the essay needs, and you will be told the number before a block is agreed rather than after.

What moves the number is not glamour. It is the subject, the research method and how late the family starts. A History Extended Essay built from printed sources sits at the lower end of the specialist band. A Chemistry essay with a laboratory component, or a Mathematics essay that needs a proof read properly, sits at the top of it, because the pool of people who can mentor it competently in the UAE is small. An essay that arrives three weeks before the school deadline costs more than the same essay started in DP1, not because anyone is profiteering, but because rescue work is denser, longer and far less likely to move a grade.

Delivery is the part worth being blunt about. Every lesson for a UAE family happens online, one-to-one, over live video, with the draft shared on screen. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. That is not a limitation dressed up as a feature. An Extended Essay is a document, and a document is better reviewed on a shared screen with the comment history preserved than it is across a kitchen table with a pen. It also means a candidate in Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain has the same access to a Biology Extended Essay mentor as a candidate in Emirates Hills.

There is a boundary that no amount of money moves. A tutor may teach, question, model and give criterion-referenced feedback. A tutor may not supply sentences, rewrite paragraphs into shape, or hand over a finished piece of work. The IB treats any other hand on the text as malpractice, and the consequence lands on the student, not on the provider. One operator in this search results page sells completed Internal Assessments. Paying for that buys an academic-integrity investigation, not a grade. Say no to it, and be wary of any quote that sounds like it includes it.

So this page is built the way a parent reads it: what Extended Essay support costs in the UAE, what drives that figure up or down, what you get for it criterion by criterion, when in the two-year cycle each hour is worth most, and what to check before money changes hands. Every AED figure carries its band and its source. Every claim about the IB rubric should still be confirmed with your child's Extended Essay coordinator, because the coordinator sets the school deadlines that actually govern your calendar.

At a glance

  • Market bands, October 2026: AED 45–150 budget, AED 150–300 qualified, AED 200–450+ specialist, AED 500–650+ premium
  • Criterion C alone carries 12 of the 34 marks — more than A and B combined
  • The three reflections on the RPPF are worth 6 marks and cost almost nothing to prepare properly
  • Six to twelve mentoring hours across two years is a realistic budget; twenty in the final month rarely is
  • Lessons are online only for UAE families; home visits are offered in India, not here
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Extended Essay belongs to the Diploma Programme core, but the research habit it tests is built earlier and tested differently in the Career-related Programme. Where your child sits in that sequence changes what support is worth buying and what it should cost.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Diploma Programme

The Extended Essay is one of three core requirements alongside Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. It is an independent research piece with a 4,000-word ceiling, registered in a subject the candidate is usually studying, supervised inside the school and marked externally against five criteria worth 34 marks in total. The EE and TOK matrix converts those two grades into up to three points on the final Diploma score.

UAE Diploma candidates sit this inside a private school system where the IB accounted for roughly 7% of Dubai's private-school roll in 2024-25, across a sector of 227 schools. That means a large absolute number of Diploma candidates but a thin spread of specialist supervisors per subject, which is exactly why families buy outside mentoring hours. Confirm your school's internal EE deadlines with the coordinator, since those, not the IB upload window, set your spending calendar.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

Middle Years Programme

The Personal Project in MYP Year 5 is the rehearsal for the Extended Essay: a self-chosen goal, a documented process and a reflective report. Students who learn to keep a process journal here arrive in DP1 already able to write a usable reflection, which is the cheapest six marks in the Diploma core to secure.

A good number of UAE schools run the MYP as a continuum into the Diploma, so the same coordinator often oversees both. Families who spend two or three hours on Personal Project process skills in Year 11 routinely spend fewer hours on Extended Essay rescue in DP2. Support at this stage is priced at the qualified-tutor band rather than the specialist band, which makes it the better value of the two.

CPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Career-related Programme

CP candidates complete a Reflective Project rather than an Extended Essay. It is shorter, ethics-focused and tied to the career-related study, but it is marked on the same habits: a defensible question, evidence, analysis and honest reflection. Mentoring is charged in the same bands, and the planning work transfers almost completely.

CP provision in the UAE is far narrower than DP provision, so a family looking for Reflective Project support locally often finds nobody within reach. Online delivery removes that constraint entirely: the mentor is chosen for knowing the ethical-dilemma framework, not for living in the same emirate. Ask any provider directly whether they have mentored a Reflective Project before, because many have not.

PRE-DPAges 14–16 · Years 10–11

Pre-DP and IGCSE research skills

Year 10 and Year 11 students heading into the Diploma gain more from a short block on referencing, source evaluation and academic style than from early subject cramming. These are the skills behind criterion D and most of criterion B, and they are far cheaper to teach before an essay exists than during one.

Many UAE candidates move from Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE into the Diploma in the same school, and the step up in independent research is where DP1 reports most often slip. A four-hour block at the qualified-tutor band in Year 11 is the single cheapest intervention available to a UAE family planning two years ahead. It also makes the first reflection session a genuine conversation rather than an improvisation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An Extended Essay is registered in a subject, and the subject decides who can mentor it and at what rate. The routes below are the ones UAE candidates choose most often. Each note says what the essay tends to demand and where the mark loss concentrates.

Biology Extended Essay

Group 4 · HL or SL candidates

Usually experimental or field-based, which makes the method the expensive part. Candidates lose criterion A marks for a question no controlled experiment can answer, and criterion C marks for reporting results without interrogating uncertainty. Mentoring hours are worth most before data collection starts, not after.

Chemistry Extended Essay

Group 4 · HL or SL candidates

Laboratory access, risk assessment and the school's willingness to host the practical set the ceiling here. The commonest failure is an investigation that is really a recipe: it produces numbers but no argument. Sessions focus on building a question with a variable worth changing and a justified analytical technique.

Physics Extended Essay

Group 4 · HL or SL candidates

Either an experiment with honest error analysis or a modelling study with defensible assumptions. Marks drain away in criterion C when a candidate presents a graph and stops. A mentor's job is to make the student explain why the gradient means what they say it means, in the subject's own vocabulary.

Mathematics Extended Essay

Group 5 · AA or AI candidates

The hardest route to mentor well and the one with the smallest UAE tutor pool, which pushes it to the top of the specialist band. Essays fail on scope: a topic either collapses into textbook exposition or expands past anything a candidate can prove. Early question-shaping is the whole game.

Economics Extended Essay

Group 3 · HL or SL candidates

A local research question with real data is the strongest form, and the UAE supplies plenty of them. Candidates lose marks by describing a market rather than applying a model to it, and by using a diagram as decoration. Sessions drill the link from theory to the evidence actually gathered.

Business Management Extended Essay

Group 3 · HL or SL candidates

Primary research is permitted and often encouraged, which creates ethics and consent questions a supervisor must sign off. The frequent problem is a consultancy report with no academic argument. Mentoring turns a company case into a question a framework can genuinely test.

History Extended Essay

Group 3 · HL or SL candidates

Source-led, and the cheapest route to mentor because the research needs no laboratory. Marks go on an unresolved historiographical debate and on narrative that never becomes argument. Candidates in the UAE working on regional topics need early help locating sources beyond the first page of search results.

English A: Language and Literature Extended Essay

Group 1 · HL or SL candidates

A close-reading argument about a text or a body of language use. The usual failure is a question so broad that the essay becomes a survey. Sessions narrow the corpus until 4,000 words can do justice to it, then work on holding one analytical line through the whole piece.

Psychology Extended Essay

Group 3 · HL or SL candidates

Almost always a literature-based study, because experimental work on human participants raises consent issues a school will rarely approve. Marks are lost when studies are summarised one after another with no critical comparison. Mentoring targets evaluation: design, sampling, ecological validity, replication.

World Studies Extended Essay

Interdisciplinary · two subjects

A World Studies Extended Essay takes a global issue through two subject lenses and demands genuine interdisciplinarity rather than two half-essays stapled together. It is the most interesting route and the most commonly mishandled. Expect the specialist band, because the mentor needs credible footing in both subjects.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay support is sold in four recognisable shapes, and they are not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong one is the most common way a UAE family overpays: a full mentoring block bought for an essay that needed one draft read, or a single read bought for an essay with no research question yet.

Fixed Extended Essay mentoring block

Eight to twelve one-to-one online sessions spread from the subject decision in DP1 to the final submission in DP2, with the hours deliberately front-loaded. Priced per hour at the specialist band, agreed in advance, and bookable in halves so the budget follows the calendar rather than a sales plan. The block is the right purchase when the essay has not been started.

  • Research-question shaping before any writing begins
  • Method or source-strategy session before data collection
  • Two criterion-marked reads: structure, then final
  • Preparation for each of the three reflection sessions
  • A viva voce rehearsal in the final week

Subject tuition with Extended Essay time attached

A weekly subject lesson for Chemistry HL or History HL, with twenty to thirty minutes of each session given to the essay registered in that subject. The best value option for families already buying subject tuition, because the mentor is already holding the syllabus context the essay sits inside and no second relationship has to be built.

  • One tutor, one rate, two problems addressed
  • Essay progress tracked against the school's internal deadlines
  • Subject vocabulary carried straight into criterion B
  • Scales up near the school deadline and back down after it

Single Extended Essay draft review

One ninety-minute read of a complete draft, returned marked against criteria A to E with a prioritised fix list the student keeps. No ongoing commitment. This is the honest purchase for a candidate who is basically on track and wants a second reader who knows the rubric, and it is how most families should start.

  • A criterion-by-criterion sheet with the marks at risk named
  • A fix list ordered by marks per hour of student effort
  • Feedback in writing, so the supervisor can see what was said
  • No sentences supplied, rewritten or edited into place

Research-methods and data-handling block

Three to four sessions on the mechanics: controlling a variable, treating uncertainty, evaluating a source, building a reference list, using a spreadsheet or statistical tool honestly. Bought before the research starts, it is the hours that most often prevent a second data-collection round, which is the single most expensive thing that can happen to an Extended Essay.

  • Error, uncertainty and significance in plain language
  • Source evaluation for literature-based essays
  • Referencing set up once, consistently, in the school's chosen style
  • A process journal the student can actually use for the RPPF

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What "Extended Essay help" actually buys

  • Ask what the student will hold at the end of the hour, not what the tutor will cover
  • Ask for feedback in writing, so the school supervisor can see it
  • Ask which criterion each session targets, by letter
  • Walk away from anything described as a completion or finishing service

Extended Essay help in the UAE is a mentoring relationship around a piece of work the student owns. In practice it means a subject specialist who reads drafts against the published criteria, asks the questions a supervisor has no time to ask, and tells you which marks are genuinely recoverable and which are not. It does not mean a second author, and no price buys one legitimately.

That distinction matters more here than in most markets, because the same search results page that lists tutors also lists operators selling finished coursework outright. One of them advertises completed Internal Assessments at a four-figure AED price. A family who buys that is not buying a grade; they are buying an academic-honesty investigation with the candidate's name on it. The IB's response to malpractice falls on the student, and no refund policy reverses it.

The useful question is therefore not "who will help with the essay" but "what specifically will be done in each hour, and what will my child have afterwards that they did not have before". A good answer sounds like: after this hour your daughter will have a research question with a defined variable, a method she can describe in two sentences, and three sources she has read rather than found. A weak answer sounds like reassurance.

Everything on this page is organised around that test. The rate tables show what the UAE market charges and who charges it. The criteria table shows where the 34 marks sit so you can see which hours are worth buying. The permission table shows the line a tutor may not cross. The calendar table shows when each hour is worth most. If a provider cannot be measured against those four things, the quote is not comparable to anything.

02

What Extended Essay support costs across the UAE

The Extended Essay cost in AED that a UAE family actually pays depends almost entirely on which of six market products they buy. Three published UAE market sources and a 2026 Dubai rate survey give the bands below. A budget online tutor starts around AED 45–65 an hour and some platforms advertise from the low AED 30s; a qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150–300; an IB, IGCSE or A-Level specialist sits at AED 200–450 and above; a premium named provider publishes up to AED 650. In-home one-to-one visits, which are the market norm rather than our model, run AED 180–500 once travel is inside the hour.

Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars — a currency no UAE family transacts school fees in. That is why the table below exists. It is also why each band is given with the provider model that quotes it rather than a brand name: a model-level comparison is checkable, and quoting a rival's number without its date and source URL is not fair comment.

Read the table as a ceiling and a floor, not a price list. IB Gram's own position is deliberately simple and is not in the table: the first lesson is free, the hourly figure depends on the subject and the specialism the essay needs, and you hear the number before anything is booked. Monthly packages circulating in the Dubai market give a useful sanity check — around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599–1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. If a quote sits far outside every band here, ask what explains it, in writing.

One figure deserves its own sentence. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package. Tutoring is not covered by that freeze. A family budgeting the Diploma core should assume school fees flat and support hours variable, which argues for buying a small number of well-timed hours rather than a standing weekly commitment that runs for two years.

03

Five things that move the number up or down

  • Subject scarcity, not subject difficulty, sets the rate
  • Experimental methods front-load the hours; literature essays spread them
  • DP1 hours change outcomes; final-month hours mostly protect them
  • Cutting 1,000 words costs more than writing them did
  • What the school supplies decides whether you need one hour or ten

Subject is the first lever. A History or Psychology Extended Essay is literature-based and can be mentored by a wider pool, so it sits at the lower end of the specialist band. A Mathematics essay, or a World Studies Extended Essay crossing two subjects, needs a mentor with credible footing in territory few tutors hold, and the price follows the scarcity rather than the difficulty.

Method is the second. An experimental Biology or Chemistry essay carries risk assessment, equipment access and uncertainty analysis, and the mentoring hours cluster before data collection because a flawed method cannot be fixed by better prose. Literature-based essays spread their hours more evenly and cost less in total, because nothing has to be redone in a laboratory.

Timing is the third and the most expensive. Hours bought in DP1, while the question is still movable, change the essay. Hours bought three weeks before a school deadline mostly triage it. Rescue sessions are longer, denser and often need two tutors' worth of attention in one, and the marks available by then are concentrated in criteria D and E rather than C, where most of the 34 sit.

The fourth is scope. An essay already 5,200 words long needs a thousand words removed without losing an argument, which is slower work than writing them was. The fifth is what the school already supplies. If the supervisor's allocated hours are real and the internal deadlines are enforced, a single Extended Essay draft review may be the entire sensible purchase. If the supervisor is covering a subject they do not teach, the block is the honest answer. Ask the coordinator which situation you are in before you buy anything.

04

The 34 marks you are paying to protect

The Extended Essay criteria A to E carry 34 marks between them, and they are not evenly weighted. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries 12 — more than focus and method plus knowledge and understanding combined. Presentation carries 4. Engagement, assessed through the three reflections recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, carries 6. Any family deciding where to spend money should start from that distribution rather than from a tutor's preferred order of work.

The practical consequence is counter-intuitive. The cheapest marks in the whole component are the engagement marks, because preparing a reflection takes under an hour and most candidates write all three in one panicked sitting at the end, which reads exactly as it was produced. The most expensive marks are in criterion C, because moving an essay from description to analysis means rebuilding paragraphs the student has grown attached to. A mentor who starts with presentation is optimising the smallest number on the sheet.

Criterion A is where UAE candidates most often lose marks before they have written a word. A research question that cannot be answered inside 4,000 words is a design fault, not a writing fault, and no amount of later support recovers the marks. This is the single strongest argument for buying one hour early rather than five late, and it is the reason the first session in any mentoring block is about narrowing the question until it has a findable answer.

Treat the table below as a map of where your money does work, and confirm the current rubric and mark allocations with your child's Extended Essay coordinator or on ibo.org before relying on them. Rubrics are revised, schools hold the authoritative version, and a page on the internet is not a substitute for the coordinator who will apply it.

05

What a tutor may do, and what only your child may do

This is the section that should decide which provider you pay. Under IB academic-honesty rules the Extended Essay must be the candidate's own work, supervised inside the school, with the supervisor commenting on one full draft and signing the RPPF. An external mentor sits outside that structure and so has to be more careful, not less. The useful test is whether a sentence in the final document could have originated anywhere other than the student's own keyboard.

A mentor may teach subject content, explain a criterion, model how an analytical paragraph works using a different example, ask the questions that expose a weak claim, mark a draft against the rubric, and tell a student plainly that a section is not yet analysis. A mentor may not supply sentences for the essay, restructure paragraphs on the student's behalf, correct grammar line by line, or hand back a version that has been edited into shape. The second list is not a style preference; it is the boundary between teaching and malpractice.

Line-by-line grammar correction deserves naming because it looks harmless and is not. If a tutor fixes every error, criterion D measures the tutor. The defensible version is to show the student the pattern — comma splices, tense drift in a methodology, inconsistent citation of the same source — and have the student find and fix the rest. It takes longer in the session and it is the only version that leaves the marks with the candidate.

Everything a mentor says should also be visible to the school. Written feedback that the student can forward to their supervisor protects the candidate, keeps the supervisor informed, and makes the whole relationship auditable if the school ever asks. Any provider reluctant to put their feedback in writing is telling you something about what the feedback contains.

06

Counting backwards from submission: where the hours are worth most

No competitor page researched for this project names a single Extended Essay milestone, which is strange, because the calendar is what determines whether support works. The dates that govern a UAE family are set by the school, not by the IB: your coordinator fixes the internal proposal, draft and final deadlines, and those sit well ahead of the IB upload. Ask for them in writing at the start of DP1 and build the budget around them.

The shape of a well-spent budget is front-loaded and tapering. One or two hours before the subject is locked, one before the first reflection session, two to four around the method, one or two on structure at the interim reflection, two on a marked full draft, one on referencing and presentation, and one rehearsing the viva voce. That is roughly six to twelve hours across two years. At the specialist band it is a planned expense rather than an emergency one.

Compare that with the pattern most families actually fall into: nothing until DP2, then eight to fifteen hours in the final month at whatever rate is available, aimed at the four presentation marks and whatever can still be salvaged in criterion C. The money spent is similar or higher. The marks protected are far fewer, and the student is more frightened. The difference is entirely scheduling.

Extended Essay supervision hours inside school are finite and usually shared across a cohort, which is why the table below separates what the school gives you from what you might buy. One note on IB dates: no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly, so confirm every IB-set deadline with your coordinator or on ibo.org rather than trusting a figure found online. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own timetables, and entry deadlines there sit months before the exams. Pearson's International GCSE November 2026 series, for example, runs its papers from late October to 19 November 2026, and the entries that put a candidate into it were submitted by the centre well before the autumn term began. Cambridge runs June and November here, with the same long lead, and the exact deadline for each one reaches you on the statement of entry the centre issues.

Subject choice and the research question: the decision that costs most to get wrong

  • Register the essay in a subject the candidate actually studies
  • Write three one-sentence questions with their evidence named beside them
  • Test each against: too broad, unanswerable here, or already answered
  • For World Studies, make the two subjects argue with each other, not take turns

Most expensive Extended Essay problems are decisions, not writing. Registering the essay in a subject the candidate does not study is permitted in some circumstances and is almost always a mistake, because criterion B is marked on subject-specific knowledge the student has not been taught. Registering it in a Higher Level subject the student is strong in, on a question that subject can genuinely test, removes a whole class of later difficulty for free.

The research question itself fails in three recognisable ways. It is too broad, so the essay becomes a survey and criterion C has nothing to grip. It is unanswerable with the evidence available in the UAE, which usually means a laboratory the school does not have or an archive nobody can reach. Or it is already answered in a textbook, so the essay is exposition. A single hour with a subject specialist will usually expose which of the three a draft question is.

A World Studies Extended Essay adds a fourth failure mode: two subjects placed side by side without being made to talk to each other. Done properly it is a strong route and a genuinely interesting one, and UAE-based global issues — water, labour mobility, urban heat, trade routes — supply more good questions than most candidates realise. Done badly it is two half-essays, and the mentoring cost of repairing it is higher than starting again.

The practical move is cheap. Before the subject is locked, write three candidate questions, each in one sentence, each with the evidence you would need named beside it. Take all three to one session. A specialist can tell you within the hour which has a findable answer, which needs narrowing, and which should be abandoned. That is the highest-value hour available on the whole component, and it costs the same as any other.

08

Online delivery, Gulf Standard Time and the Ramadan calendar

Every lesson for a UAE family is delivered one-to-one over live video, with the draft open on a shared screen and the feedback kept. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; home visits are offered only in India. The case for online delivery on this component is unusually strong, because an Extended Essay is a document: tracked comments, a version history and a recording beat a pen on a printout, and the student can revisit what was said in week three when they are editing in week twenty.

The second argument is supply. An online Extended Essay tutor is chosen for having mentored that subject before, not for living within a reasonable drive. For a Mathematics or World Studies essay in Al Ain, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain, the local pool is often empty, and the honest alternative to online is not in-home tutoring — it is nothing. Where a subject genuinely has no UAE-resident specialist free, the match is made with a specialist elsewhere and you are told so before booking, at the rate quoted.

Scheduling is where Gulf Standard Time does real work. UAE school days end early and traffic peaks around 6pm, which is exactly when in-home sessions have to travel. An online session at 7.30pm costs the same hour of tutoring with none of the commute, and a candidate in Sharjah is not paying for a tutor's drive from Dubai. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar timing without changing the rate, and in exam weeks they pause rather than running out of obligation.

The comparison below is the one competitor pages avoid. Only one researched page in the whole area cluster publishes any version of it, and it has three generic rows. Read it as a reality check on what each option delivers for the money rather than a claim that one is better for every family.

Before you pay: the permit, the regulator and the own-school rule

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through its smart app, website or e-services system.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone, and a figure circulating online as a specific sum is not verifiable. What a parent can do is simple and rarely done: ask to see the permit before the first paid session, and treat reluctance as an answer.

There is one rule that catches UAE families out repeatedly. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct bars the same arrangement. So the most tempting option — paying your child's own Extended Essay supervisor for extra hours — is the one option to decline. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document, since this has been reported in the press rather than quoted from the source here.

The regulators themselves are worth naming because almost nobody in this market does. KHDA oversees the quality of private education in Dubai. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. SPEA regulates private education in Sharjah and approves fees, curricula and assessment methods. Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does the same. The federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no permit, licence or endorsement from any of them and does not claim one; a tuition business with premises in Dubai would need a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is a different thing entirely.

What the Extended Essay does and does not do for a UAE university application

  • British track: five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at E or grade 3 minimum, Arabic and Islamic education excluded
  • Plus one A-Level at grade E or two AS-Levels at the same grade
  • American track: SAT Math 450+, and IELTS 5 / TOEFL iBT 61 / SAT reading-writing 450
  • IB track: verify any points figure on a Ministry of Education source before relying on it
  • A grade E in the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge is a failing condition for the Diploma

Parents sometimes buy Extended Essay support under the impression that the component carries weight with the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency process. It does not, and nobody should sell it that way. The equivalency rules that have been published are curriculum-specific and subject-count based. For the British track, candidates must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five.

That last detail is worth holding on to, because a ranking competitor page states UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects. The published rule is five, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics by at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the IB track, no points threshold is published here, because none has been read on a Ministry of Education source. Any site quoting an IB equivalency score without that citation is guessing, and inheriting someone else's guess is how a family makes a decision on a number nobody can stand behind. Check the requirement on the Ministry's own channel or with the emirate attestation authority, and treat this page as a pointer rather than an authority. IB Gram does not perform, expedite or guarantee equivalency or attestation for anyone.

Where the Extended Essay does earn its keep is the Diploma itself and the applications that follow it. The EE and TOK matrix converts the two core grades into up to three points on the final score, and those points decide offers at the margin. A grade E in either the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge is a failing condition for the Diploma. Universities also read the essay as evidence of independent research, which matters for competitive courses. Those are real reasons to spend on it. Equivalency is not one of them, and no tutoring is required for a regulatory process.

Where we tutor

Extended Essay support by emirate

The regulator changes across the seven emirates, and so does the local supply of Diploma supervisors. Online delivery means the mentor is the same wherever you sit; what differs is how much you were short of locally in the first place.

Dubai

Regulated by KHDA, which oversees the quality of private education in the emirate. The largest Diploma cohort in the country sits here, across a private sector of 227 schools in 2024-25. Supervisor time is still rationed per cohort, so most paid Extended Essay hours in the UAE are bought by Dubai families.

Abu Dhabi

Regulated by ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, so an Abu Dhabi family cannot simply pay their child's own supervisor for extra hours.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK, with a far thinner spread of IB World Schools than the island. A Mathematics or World Studies Extended Essay mentor is unlikely to be available within driving distance, which is the clearest case in the country for buying the specialist online rather than compromising locally.

Sharjah

Regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That makes SPEA a curriculum authority, not only an inspector. Diploma provision is modest, and several Sharjah families have a child commuting into Dubai for the programme.

Ajman

Private schools here are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate-level authority. IB provision is limited, so Extended Essay candidates are often the only one in their subject at the school. Online mentoring is frequently the only route to a subject-matched reader.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, like SPEA, approves fees, curricula and assessment methods. RAK returned zero mentions across the competitor pages researched for this project, which is a fair measure of how little attention northern-emirate Diploma families are given.

Fujairah

Supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. Diploma candidates on the east coast face the longest journey to any specialist tutor pool in the country, and a 4pm in-home session is simply not purchasable. A 7pm online session in Gulf Standard Time is, at the same rate as Dubai.

Umm Al Quwain

Also under the federal Ministry of Education. The smallest private-school market in the UAE, with effectively no local market for Extended Essay mentoring in a named subject. Families here pay the same online band as everyone else, which is the point of delivering it that way.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai IB World Schools

The deepest Diploma provision in the country, and the cluster where Extended Essay supervision is most likely to be formalised with internal deadlines and a taught research-skills programme. Students we support attend schools in this group; the names are listed as context for the school system, not as relationships.

  • Dubai International Academy – Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy – Dubai
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School – Arabian Ranches
  • Deira International School
  • Uptown International School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Dwight School Dubai

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

ADEK territory, where the ethics rules on tutoring your own school's students bite hardest. Diploma cohorts are smaller than Dubai's, so a subject with four candidates may share a supervisor with no background in the research method the essay needs. That gap is what paid mentoring hours close here.

  • Raha International School
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS World Academy – Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Provision thins sharply north of Dubai, and some families commute across emirate lines for the Diploma. Verify any school's current programme authorisation on the regulator's own listing before assuming it runs the DP, because provision in this cluster changes more often than in Dubai.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • RAK Academy
  • Sharjah American International School – Sharjah campus

Schools are named as context for the UAE school system only; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and every name should be checked against the relevant regulator's own school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the stage and the school deadline

The three facts that decide everything: which subject the essay is registered in, whether a research question exists yet, and the date the school has set for the full draft. With those, we can tell you whether you are buying one Extended Essay draft review or a full mentoring block, before anyone discusses money.

  2. 02

Hear the rate and the shape of the plan

You are given the hourly figure, the number of hours the stage actually warrants, and which criterion each session targets. If the honest answer is that two hours will do, that is the answer. If no UAE-resident specialist in that subject is free, you are told so and told where the match would come from instead.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One introductory online session with the proposed mentor, with no payment taken and no card details asked for. It exists so the student can judge whether this person asks useful questions about their work. Bring the research question, or the three candidate questions, and treat it as the subject-choice session it usually becomes.

  4. 04

Work the calendar, not the panic

Sessions are booked against the school's internal deadlines rather than a fixed weekly slot, which means hours cluster before the method and before each draft and thin out in between. Feedback comes in writing after every session so the student can forward it to their supervisor and the school can see exactly what was said.

  5. 05

Review what the hours bought, then stop or continue

After the marked full draft, you decide whether the remaining hours are worth it. Many families stop there, having bought a referencing pass and a viva voce rehearsal and nothing more. Stopping is a normal outcome, not a failed retention; a mentoring block that runs out of useful work should end.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The rate is quoted before the sale, not after

Three of the six competitor pages researched publish no price anywhere, and one has an FAQ that asks the price and then declines to answer it. You get a number, the market bands it sits inside, and the source of those bands. If a provider will not give you a figure before a consultation, that is information about the figure.

Hours are recommended against the mark distribution

Criterion C carries 12 of the 34 marks and the engagement marks cost an hour to protect. Sessions are proposed in that order rather than in the order that fills a calendar. If the sensible purchase is a single draft review, that is what is recommended, and the mentoring block is left on the shelf.

The academic-honesty line is written down and held

Your child writes every sentence. A mentor teaches, questions, models with other examples, and marks drafts against the criteria in writing. Nothing is supplied, rewritten or edited into shape, and the feedback is sent in a form you can forward to the school supervisor. The boundary protects the candidate, which is the only person it can harm.

Subject-matched mentors rather than whoever is nearby

An Extended Essay is marked on subject-specific knowledge, so a general essay tutor cannot defend criterion B. Mentors are matched to the registered subject and to the research method, which is why a Mathematics essay in Al Ain and a History essay in Dubai are handled by different people at different points in the band.

Online, in Gulf Standard Time, with the record kept

Live video, the draft on a shared screen, feedback in writing, and sessions timed around UAE school days, the 6pm traffic peak and post-Iftar hours during Ramadan. No travel is billed because none happens. Home visits are a service offered in India, and that is stated plainly rather than implied away.

Sources named, including where we do not know

Every AED band on this page carries its market source and date. The permit and regulator facts come from u.ae, mohre.gov.ae and KHDA's own documents. Where a figure has not been verified — any IB session date, any IB equivalency threshold — the page says so and points you at the authority instead of guessing.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

How much should a UAE family expect to pay for Extended Essay support?+

Market rates in the UAE run roughly AED 150–300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200–450 and upwards for an IB specialist, with premium named providers publishing up to AED 650. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table gives the specialist band as AED 200–450+. In-home visits, which are the market norm rather than our model, run AED 180–500 once travel sits inside the hour. A realistic total across two years is six to twelve hours. IB Gram's own hourly figure depends on the subject and the specialism the essay needs, and is quoted before anything is booked, after a free trial lesson.

Is it better to buy a fixed block of hours or pay session by session?+

It depends on whether the essay exists yet. If there is no research question, a block of eight to twelve sessions spread across DP1 and DP2 is better value, because the early hours change the essay rather than patch it and the sessions can be scheduled against the school's internal deadlines. If there is a complete draft and the student is broadly on track, pay for a single marked read and stop. The expensive mistake is buying a block for an essay that needed one review, or buying one review for an essay with a question nobody can answer in 4,000 words.

Our daughter already has a school supervisor. What are we actually paying a tutor for?+

Supervisor hours are allocated and shared across a cohort, and the supervisor may not teach the subject the essay is registered in. What outside mentoring adds is subject-matched reading of drafts against criteria A to E, time to interrogate the research question properly, and preparation for each reflection session. What it must not add is a second author. Ask your coordinator two questions first: how many supervision hours your child actually gets, and whether the supervisor teaches that subject. If the answers are generous and yes, a single draft review may be the whole sensible purchase.

Why do quotes for the same Extended Essay range from AED 150 to AED 650 an hour?+

Four things explain almost all of it. Subject scarcity: Mathematics and World Studies mentors are rarer than History mentors, so the band is higher. Format: an in-home visit bills travel inside the hour, which is why AED 180–500 is the home band and AED 150–450 the online one. Specialism: criterion knowledge and experience of the rubric cost more than general essay help. And positioning: a premium named provider publishes AED 650 because it can. Ask what the premium buys in writing. If the answer is a tone of voice rather than a capability, it is not worth the gap.

Does the price change if the research question needs laboratory data?+

Usually yes, and the reason is the stage rather than the subject. Experimental Biology, Chemistry and Physics essays need method work before any data exists: a controlled variable, a risk assessment, an uncertainty treatment the examiner will accept. Those hours sit at the top of the specialist band because the pool of mentors who can do them competently is small, and because a flawed method cannot be repaired by better prose later. Literature-based essays in History, Psychology or English spread their hours more evenly and cost less in total, since nothing has to be repeated in a laboratory.

Which Extended Essay subjects cost the most to support in the UAE?+

Mathematics is the most expensive to mentor well, because the essay has to prove something without collapsing into textbook exposition and very few UAE-based tutors have supervised one. A World Studies Extended Essay is next, since the mentor needs credible footing in two subjects and has to make them genuinely argue with each other. Experimental Chemistry and Physics follow, for the method work. History, Psychology and English sit at the lower end of the specialist band, because the research is source-led and the mentor pool is wider. Scarcity sets these rates, not difficulty.

We are in DP2 with eight weeks left. What can be done and what will it cost?+

Something useful, but less than you would hope, and the budget should reflect that. With eight weeks the recoverable marks concentrate in criterion D, the four presentation marks, and in whatever criterion C can still absorb from restructuring existing paragraphs. Realistically that is a marked full-draft read, a referencing and formatting pass, reflection preparation and a viva voce rehearsal — five to six hours at the specialist band. What cannot be bought at this stage is a better research question, which is where criterion A marks live. Starting in DP1 costs the same per hour and protects far more of the 34.

Is there a cheaper way to get a second opinion on a finished draft?+

Yes, and most families should start there. A single ninety-minute read of a complete draft, returned marked against criteria A to E with a prioritised fix list, sits in the AED 200–450 band and carries no ongoing commitment. It tells you which marks are at risk and which are already secure, which is exactly the information needed to decide whether to buy more hours. A proofread from a budget tutor at AED 45–150 is cheaper and usually worth less, because it fixes typography without touching the 12 marks sitting in critical thinking.

Do Extended Essay sessions pause during Ramadan, and do we still pay?+

Sessions move rather than pause. UAE school hours shorten during Ramadan and families eat late, so mentoring shifts to post-Iftar timing at the same hourly rate — no premium for the unsocial slot and no charge for a week nobody studied in. Hours are billed as used, so a quieter fortnight costs less and a draft deadline landing in that month can be supported properly. Say at the outset which weeks your family expects to lose to travel, Eid or examinations, and the plan is built around them rather than around a standing weekly slot.

Can one mentor cover both the Extended Essay and the subject it is registered in?+

That is usually the best value available. A weekly Chemistry HL or History HL lesson with twenty to thirty minutes given to the essay means one tutor, one rate and one relationship, and the mentor is already holding the syllabus context the essay sits inside. It also keeps criterion B honest, because the subject vocabulary being taught in the lesson is the vocabulary the examiner is looking for. The arrangement scales up as the school's draft deadline approaches and back down afterwards, which a separate essay-only engagement does not do easily.

What happens to the fee if the match turns out to be wrong?+

The free trial lesson exists to catch that before money moves. It is one introductory online session with the proposed mentor, with no payment taken and no card details requested, and its only purpose is to let the student judge whether this person asks useful questions about their own work. If the fit is wrong after a paid session, say so and a different mentor is proposed; hours are booked in small increments rather than a long prepaid block precisely so that a change costs a session, not a term.

How are Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge grades turned into Diploma points?+

The two core grades are combined through the EE and TOK matrix, which can add up to three points to the final Diploma score. Those points decide university offers at the margin, which is why a candidate sitting on 37 predicted points has a concrete financial reason to protect them. A grade E in either component is a failing condition for the Diploma regardless of subject scores. Confirm the current matrix with your child's coordinator or on ibo.org, because the rules governing the core are the school's to apply and are revised from time to time.

Do we need a tutor for the Extended Essay to pass UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

No, and anyone implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process. The published equivalency rules are subject-count based: the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. No Ministry-sourced IB points threshold has been verified for publication here, so check that requirement on the Ministry's own channel. IB Gram does not perform, expedite or guarantee equivalency or attestation, and no tutoring is required for it.

Is a mentor who quotes in pounds or dollars a problem for a UAE family?+

It is a cost you should price in rather than a disqualification. Two of the agencies ranking for these searches quote in US dollars and one leads with pounds sterling, and a UAE card payment then carries a conversion spread and sometimes a cross-border fee on top of the headline rate. Ask for the figure in AED, ask whether it is per hour or per session, and ask what the total will be for the hours proposed. A rate quoted in the currency you actually pay school fees in is easier to compare against the AED bands on this page.

Can a mentor in Al Ain or Fujairah be found for a Mathematics essay?+

Locally, often not, and that is worth saying plainly. Al Ain sits under ADEK with far fewer IB World Schools than Abu Dhabi island, and Fujairah is supervised federally with the longest journey to any specialist pool in the country. A Mathematics or World Studies Extended Essay mentor within driving distance may simply not exist. Online delivery removes the problem: the mentor is chosen for having supervised that subject before, the session runs at 7.30pm Gulf Standard Time, and the rate is the same one a Dubai family pays, with no travel billed because none happens.

Can a tutor help if the essay is 1,200 words over the limit?+

Yes, and it is slower work than writing those words was, so budget for it. Removing 1,200 words without losing an argument means deciding which sections carry criterion C marks and which are description that felt necessary at the time. A mentor can mark the draft against the criteria, show which paragraphs are doing analytical work and which are not, and set the priority order — but the student makes every cut themselves, because the words in the final document have to be theirs. Two hours is a realistic figure for a draft in that state.

Start with one hour and a number you have actually been told

The useful first step on an Extended Essay is small. Write down the subject, the stage the essay has reached and the date the school has set for the full draft. Bring three candidate research questions, each in one sentence, with the evidence you would need named beside it. Take the free trial lesson, with no payment taken and no card details asked for, and let a subject specialist tell you which question has a findable answer. You will hear the hourly figure, the number of hours the stage warrants and which criterion each session targets before anything is booked. If two hours is the honest answer, that is the answer you will get.
