IGCSE Science Tutor in Town Square

The question behind searching for an IGCSE science tutor in Town Square is whether anybody nearby knows the syllabus your child actually sits — and in science that means the practical assessment route as much as the board. Most families have never been told which route their school entered. This page starts there, then says which of the three sciences to work on first.

  • Practical assessment route established before any plan is made
  • Matched to the entry and syllabus code, not to the word science
  • One-to-one live video; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
  • We recommend one science and a shared-skills block, not three tutors

IB & IGCSE in Town Square

Which practical route is your child entered for?

Ask a Town Square parent which board their child's science department uses and most can find out. Ask which practical assessment route the school entered and almost nobody knows, which is a problem, because that single decision changes where a substantial share of the marks sit and therefore what tutoring should be aimed at.

The two broad possibilities are a written Alternative to Practical paper, used on many Cambridge science entries, or assessed laboratory work at school. They are not variations on a theme. The written route tests experimental understanding on paper — reading an instrument to a sensible precision, spotting that a method cannot answer the question it was set, identifying an uncontrolled variable, building a results table with correct headings and units, plotting and interpreting a graph, judging whether a conclusion is supported. All of that responds directly to one-to-one work, and it is reliably where students lose the most marks relative to the effort of preparing.

The laboratory route puts the assessed technique at school, where it belongs and where no tutor substitutes for it. A provider implying otherwise is overselling, and it is worth treating as a signal. What tutoring adds in that case is the reasoning around the bench — predicting the expected result, handling an anomaly rather than discarding it, simple uncertainty treatment, writing up to the expected standard — which is still a meaningful share of the credit.

Both routes sit on top of the entry question. Separate sciences, Cambridge Coordinated Sciences 0654 and Cambridge Combined Science 0653 cover different amounts of content and award different numbers of grades, so a tutor teaching separate-science depth to a coordinated student spends sessions on material that will not be examined. One email to the school office returns the entry, the board, the syllabus codes and the practical route together.

Town Square's geography matters too. It is a Nshama community off Al Qudra Road, populated recently by younger families, and Dubai's tutoring supply clusters around the older school corridors rather than the newer Dubailand ones. The subset of tutors willing to work out here is smaller before specification is considered, and a recently settled community has not yet built the neighbour network that vets tutors elsewhere.

IB Gram delivers one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and makes no home visits anywhere in the UAE — in-home tutoring is a service we run in India only. That widens the pool from whoever will drive to Al Qudra Road to anybody who has prepared students for your child's specific practical component, which is the variable that actually decides the marks.

A last framing point before the detail. In a triple-award week the limiting resource is not money but hours, and three sciences generate three sets of homework on top of a long school run. That is why most of this page argues for buying the shared layer once rather than buying three weekly tutors: scientific calculation, command terms, data handling and practical reasoning are examined in effectively the same way across all three subjects, so one block lifts three grades and leaves the week breathable.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science support is a different job at each stage, and in a three-science week the stage decides how much can realistically be attempted. These are the stages we cover for Town Square families.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 science

The year the science entry begins to be decided, usually on class performance and set placement. Nothing is examined externally, which is why it is both the cheapest point to influence the outcome and the easiest to skip. Explaining rather than stating, and handling calculations with units, are the two habits that carry forward.

Town Square has a young population and many mid-stage arrivals, so a child joining in Year 9 meets a new topic order partway through a settling-in term. A diagnostic here, before the entry route is fixed, is the best-value science purchase available on this corridor and almost nobody makes it.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10 science

Most of the science content is delivered across whichever entry was chosen, and the entry is confirmed. For a triple-award student that means three subjects' worth of content simultaneously, which is the actual difficulty rather than any single topic being hard.

The scheduling question starts here, and so should the shared-skills work: scientific calculation, command-term discipline, data handling and practical-paper reasoning are examined identically across all three sciences, so one block in Year 10 lifts three grades rather than one.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11 science

The work shifts from content to producing marks: command-term discipline, showing method in calculations, and the practical-paper reasoning schools reach last. Grades arrive as 9-1 or A*-G depending on subject and board, and both scales appear on UAE reports.

By February a triple-award student with three weak sciences cannot realistically fix all three, and we will say so. Concentrating on the one with the best movement per hour, with a November entry for another if needed, beats diluting across three in a final term.

Post-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

What the science grades open

Most UAE British-curriculum schools split after Year 11 into A Levels or the IB Diploma. A Level sciences and IB Higher Level sciences generally expect separate-science grades at a good standard, so the entry route taken at fourteen has consequences at sixteen.

This is the consequence families learn latest. If a chemistry-requiring or physics-requiring degree is anywhere in view, the triple-versus-coordinated question in Year 9 matters more than any individual grade, and it is worth settling deliberately rather than by default during a busy term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IGCSE science subjects, components and shared skills Town Square students need, with the codes to check and where marks actually go.

Biology, separate science

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Recall volume plus command-term precision. Describe, explain and suggest want different answers, and a knowledgeable student writing the wrong one scores low. Experimental design and data-interpretation questions reward structured weekly practice over re-reading notes.

Chemistry, separate science

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Moles and stoichiometry are the wall. Balancing an equation is a different skill from converting between mass, moles and volume against a clock. Qualitative analysis and the required ion tests are heavily examined and quick to secure once named.

Physics, separate science

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Precise definitions, units carried through every step, and rearranging a formula under pressure. Electricity, waves and energy transfer recur as weak topics. Graph work and reading instruments to a justified precision are examined directly.

Coordinated Sciences

Cambridge 0654 double award

All three disciplines in one qualification with reduced content in each, awarding two grades. Teaching separate-science depth to a coordinated student spends sessions on content that will not be examined, which is a specific and common mismatch.

Combined Science

Cambridge 0653 single award

A single grade across all three disciplines at further reduced depth. Often misidentified as triple award by a new tutor, because the school may still timetable three teachers and three sets of lessons regardless of the entry.

The Alternative to Practical paper

Cambridge separate and coordinated entries

A written paper assessing experimental understanding rather than bench skill. Taught last in most schools and where the most marks sit relative to preparation effort, which makes it the single most efficient thing a three-science family can target.

Assessed laboratory work

Where the school enters that route

Bench technique taught and assessed at school, which no tutor replaces. What one-to-one work contributes is prediction, anomaly handling, simple uncertainty treatment and writing up to the expected standard, which is still a real share of the credit.

Scientific calculation

All three sciences, both boards

Rearrangement, units, standard form and percentage work. The clearest shared weakness: it appears in chemistry stoichiometry, physics formulae and biology data questions alike, so fixing it once improves three grades.

Command terms in science

All three sciences, both boards

State, describe, explain, suggest, compare and evaluate each want a different structure, and the distinction decides more marks than content recall does. Rarely taught explicitly because departments are busy covering content.

Data handling and graph work

All three sciences, both boards

Tables with correct headings and units, plotting, lines of best fit, reading values back and stating whether data supports a conclusion. Transfers across all three sciences at once, which makes it efficient to teach.

Separate-science bridging to A Level or IB

Year 11 into Year 12

A short block on the quantitative and explanatory habits A Level and IB sciences assume and IGCSE does not fully build. Inexpensive in the summer; a rescue by November of Year 12 at considerably higher cost.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three science arrangements for Town Square families, all online over live video. For a three-science household the choice matters more than usual, because a week has limits.

Shared-skills block across all three

A short run on what all three sciences examine identically: scientific calculation and rearrangement, command-term discipline, data handling and the practical-paper reasoning. One block improves three grades at once, which makes it the best value available to a triple-award family and the thing we recommend most often.

  • Six to ten sessions with a written topic list as the scope
  • Explicit coverage of the Alternative to Practical paper where it applies
  • Benefits biology, chemistry and physics simultaneously
  • Best taken in Year 10 or early Year 11

One science, weekly, chosen by diagnostic

After the shared block, a fixed weekly slot in whichever science shows the most movement available per hour — which is frequently not the one the student complains about. The other two rest on school teaching and the student's own revision, which is what the shared layer has just made more effective.

  • Sixty minutes weekly in a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot
  • Matched to entry, board, code and practical route
  • Chosen on diagnostic evidence rather than on preference
  • Half-term reviews against specification objectives

November entry block, one subject

One science, a defined topic list, a fixed endpoint at the November papers. The narrowest and cheapest purchase available, and the right answer for a subject that could not realistically move in a final term alongside two others.

  • Topic list agreed as scope before the first session
  • Six to ten sessions across the summer and first term
  • Results reach students in January, in time for applications
  • No automatic rollover into open-ended tutoring

01

The practical assessment route, and why it decides what to prepare

This is the question to put to the school office first, and it is the one almost no family asks. How is the practical component assessed in each science: by a written Alternative to Practical paper, or by assessed laboratory work? The answer changes where the recoverable marks sit and therefore what a tutor should spend sessions on.

On a written route, the whole assessed task is a document — and that is excellent news for one-to-one online work, because the entire exercise is reading, annotating and marking a document together. What it tests is specific: reading a measuring instrument to a precision the instrument justifies, recognising that a described method cannot answer its question, identifying which variable needed controlling and was not, constructing a results table with correct headings and units, plotting points and drawing a line of best fit, reading a value back from the graph and saying what it means, and judging whether a stated conclusion is supported by the data shown.

On a laboratory route, the assessed technique happens at school and no tutor substitutes for it. That limitation is real and we state it rather than working around it. What one-to-one work adds is everything surrounding the bench: predicting what the experiment should produce before it runs, deciding what to do with an anomalous result rather than silently dropping it, calculating a simple percentage uncertainty from the apparatus and judging whether the effect exceeds it, and writing up so the assessment criteria are actually addressed.

The written papers in both cases also carry experimental questions that ask a student to evaluate a method rather than perform one, which is examinable reasoning and the same skill set. The table sets out the routes and what each means for preparation.

02

Which of the three sciences should you work on first?

In a triple-award household the honest answer is almost never all of them, so the choice matters. And the subject a student names is frequently not the subject where marks are most recoverable, which is why this decision should rest on a diagnostic rather than on a preference.

Students name the science they dislike or find most confusing. That is real information about how they feel and poor information about where a grade can move. The subject with the best return per hour is usually the one where content is nearly there and only the technique is missing — where a student understands the material and loses marks on command terms, on unshown method, or on data questions. Those faults move in weeks. A subject where a year of content is genuinely absent does not move in a term, whatever anybody sells you.

There are diagnostic signals for each. In chemistry, if multi-step conversions fail under time pressure, that is a quantitative fault and inexpensive to fix. In physics, if definitions are loose and units get dropped, that is technique. In biology, if answers are knowledgeable and the wrong shape, that is command terms, and it is the cheapest grade movement available in the subject. Conversely, a student who cannot explain a basic mechanism in chemistry or cannot rearrange a formula at all in physics is showing a content or foundation gap that needs more time than a final term provides.

The table sets out the signals against what they mean and what the work is. Read it alongside a marked paper rather than a report, because a report grade cannot distinguish a technique fault from a content gap and the whole decision rests on that distinction.

The shared layer: what all three sciences examine identically

This is the most efficient purchase available to a Town Square three-science family, and almost nobody sells it because it is a smaller sale than three weekly tutors.

Four things are examined in effectively the same way across biology, chemistry and physics. Scientific calculation: rearranging a formula, carrying units through a multi-step calculation, standard form at speed, percentage work. Command terms: state, describe, explain, suggest, compare and evaluate each demanding a different structure of answer. Data handling: tables with correct headings and units, plotting, lines of best fit, reading values back, judging whether data supports a conclusion. And practical-paper reasoning, which on a written route is an entire paper and on a laboratory route still appears in theory-paper experimental questions.

Because those are shared, a six to ten session block aimed at them lifts three grades rather than one. The arithmetic is straightforward: at published mid-band Dubai rates, three separate weekly science tutors run to roughly AED 1,800-3,600 a month, while a single shared block occupies one slot and is finished with a defined endpoint. For most families the sensible sequence is the shared block first, then one science weekly if the diagnostic still warrants it.

It also solves the week problem. Three weekly sessions plus the homework three sciences generate plus a long Al Qudra Road school run leaves a student no independent study time, and independent practice is where science grades are actually made. A shared block plus one weekly subject leaves the week breathable, which is a condition of any of it working.

The entry route still has to be established

  • Separate sciences, 0654 coordinated and 0653 combined award different grade counts
  • Content depth differs, so teaching the wrong depth wastes sessions invisibly
  • The timetable does not reveal the entry; the school office does
  • The entry can narrow post-16 science options at sixteen

Even once the practical route is known, the entry decides how much content is examined, and it is not visible from the timetable. A student can have three science teachers and three sets of lessons and still be entered for a single coordinated qualification.

Separate sciences, the triple-award route, means biology, chemistry and physics as independent qualifications with three grades, each covering the full syllabus — Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625, or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Cambridge Coordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three disciplines in one double-award qualification with reduced content in each, awarding two grades. Cambridge Combined Science 0653 is the single-award version at further reduced depth, awarding one.

The mismatch this creates is concrete. A tutor assuming triple award and teaching separate-science depth to a coordinated student spends sessions on content that will not be examined. A tutor assuming coordinated and teaching reduced depth to a triple-award student leaves the top of each syllabus uncovered. Both look entirely satisfactory week to week, and neither becomes visible until a paper arrives.

The entry also has a post-16 consequence families learn latest. A Level sciences and IB Higher Level sciences generally expect separate-science grades at a good standard, so the coordinated route can narrow which options are straightforwardly available at sixteen. If a chemistry-requiring or physics-requiring degree is anywhere in view, that decision in Year 9 or Year 10 matters more than any individual grade does. Ask the school what would be required to change entry route, and by when, because the answer is usually a date rather than a refusal.

What IGCSE science help costs around Town Square

Read the Dubai bands from the top down, because that is the end a worried three-science family starts at. BartyED publishes AED 650 an hour at the premium end. Below that, specialist IGCSE, IB and A Level tutors are advertised at AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate putting the band at AED 200-450 plus. In-home visits run AED 180-500 including travel, the travel portion being the part of the invoice that teaches your child nothing. Qualified online subject tutors sit at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150, and budget online tutoring at AED 33-65 an hour, Tutopiya at AED 33-52 and EdFlik at AED 45-65. All of those were read from provider pages in October 2026. The band matters less than one question asked inside it: only a tutor who can tell you what an alternative-to-practical paper demands that a practical-endorsement route does not is being paid to prepare the papers your child will actually sit.

For a three-science household the monthly multiple is the number that matters, and it is the reason the shared-skills block exists. Bestimate estimates AED 240-600 a month for one weekly hour at the budget band, AED 600-1,200 mid-tier and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Multiply by three for three separate weekly tutors and the mid band alone reaches AED 1,800-3,600 a month, for an arrangement that also consumes the student's entire week.

There is a quieter cost too. Paying specialist rates for separate-science depth when the child is entered for coordinated sciences is paying for content that will not be examined, and paying for the wrong practical route's preparation is paying for a paper the student will not sit. Neither is visible on an invoice, and both are prevented by one email before the first session.

Every figure belongs to the provider named beside it. None is an IB Gram price — we publish no rate card on these pages, because the honest number depends on entry, board, practical route, how many sciences are in play and the weeks remaining. The June series, the November route, and the series not available here

A correction first, because it circulates among UAE parents constantly and acting on it costs a term. Cambridge's February/March series is offered to India only. UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series. If anybody has told you a March resit is available for your child, they are describing another country's provision.

The part of the Cambridge calendar that catches a separate-science candidate is the zone rather than the series. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, and says plainly that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Three separate sciences means six or more science papers sitting inside that timetable, so there are six or more opportunities to read the wrong zone's version, and a Town Square family whose child travels out to a campus in another community cannot infer the zone from where they live. Ask the school which zone it sits in rather than downloading a timetable found by search. The series themselves are settled: Cambridge runs its International GCSE and O Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October.

On the Pearson side, the question a three-science family actually needs answered is when a result lands rather than when a paper is sat. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. A November entry returns its result in January: the November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026, late enough to matter for a few post-16 deadlines and early enough for most of them. A summer entry returns in August, with June 2026 results reaching centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026. The sitting window itself is autumn, the November 2026 final timetable having run from late October to 19 November 2026, which means the revision block for one re-entered science falls across the first term of the following school year and competes with that year's work. Pearson publishes provisional timetables well ahead of each series, so work from the live official PDF rather than any date restated on a tutoring site.

For a three-science family the November route is strategically useful rather than a consolation prize. A student who did well in two sciences and poorly in one re-enters that single subject, works a narrow fixed-scope block over the summer and first term, and has a January result in time to update post-16 applications. That is a better outcome than attempting to lift three grades simultaneously in the spring of Year 11, and it costs considerably less.

07

Is the science tutor you find permitted to teach in the UAE?

The heading asks a question, and it is one you can check rather than one you have to take on trust. Private tuition here is a permitted activity rather than an unregulated one, and most parents have never been told. The permit a science tutor needs was created by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. On MoHRE's own system the service is listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through its smart app, website or e-services, with a stated two-working-day completion time.

Because it costs nothing and takes two working days, lacking one is a choice rather than an obstacle. Eligibility is wide: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE states that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, and Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify the amounts, so any figure circulating informally should be disregarded.

The permit's code of conduct bars a tutor from serving students affiliated with their own school, and press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules describes the same prohibition for Abu Dhabi school staff. In science this closes off the arrangement families most want in a specific way: the person who knows exactly which practical route your child's department entered is your child's own science teacher, and that is the one person who may not be engaged privately.

One further distinction, because Town Square sits close enough to several tuition centres that a parent will be offered premises and sometimes a lab bench. An individual needs the MoHRE permit. An organisation running tutoring from premises anywhere in Dubai needs something else entirely: a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. That renewal date is worth asking about, because a centre that lets it lapse part-way through a series is a centre your child loses in the middle of a practical block. IB Gram is in neither position. We hold no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership, claim none, and have no UAE office or centre.

08

What we will not claim about science grades

  • No grade or improvement guarantees, and no equivalency urgency claims
  • No statistics without n, date and method — so none published
  • No past papers or mark schemes hosted or sold; official sources linked
  • No three-tutor sale where a shared block plus one subject works better

No guarantee of a grade, a tier change or an improvement in any of the three sciences, and no suggestion that tutoring is required for Ministry of Education equivalency, university admission or school progression. That last point is a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process, and it is worth noticing whenever anybody makes it.

No statistics without a sample size, a date and a method, which in practice means none. No average science grades achieved by students we have taught, no percentage improved, no satisfaction figure, no self-generated star rating. Competitors publish such numbers routinely, sometimes in two conflicting versions on the same page, and almost never state how any of them was produced. Self-asserted review markup also breaches Google's structured-data policy.

No awarding-body material hosted or supplied. Past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson; we cite and link them rather than distributing them, and a provider charging a materials fee for them deserves a question. No examiner descriptions either, because current examiner status is not something we can evidence.

And no three-tutor recommendation where a shared block plus one weekly subject would serve better, even though three sessions is a larger sale. What we will do instead is diagnose all three sciences, name the one with the most movement per hour, recommend the shared layer where it is better value, and tell you plainly when three grades cannot all be lifted in the time remaining.

Where we tutor

Town Square and the communities on this corridor

All of these share the same science-tutoring picture: plenty of general science tutors, far fewer who will name your practical route, and a drive that narrows the pool first.

Town Square

A Nshama community off Al Qudra Road, apartments and townhouses with a young population. Recently settled, so the neighbour-recommendation network that vets tutors elsewhere is still thin here.

Mudon

Nearest Dubai Properties community, weighted to Years 7 to 9. The right point on this corridor to ask the triple-versus-coordinated question, before the entry route is fixed.

Remraam

Apartment community served by South View School, with the shortest school run on this stretch and therefore the widest usable afternoon for a weekday session.

Serena

A quiet townhouse community with the same geography and the same shortage of tutors who have prepared students for a specific practical component.

Arabian Ranches 3

Nearest established community towards Emirates Road, sharing the school pool. Earlier collection widens the evening, which matters in a three-science household.

DAMAC Hills 2

Further along Al Qudra Road and villa-weighted, with the same school destinations and the same entry-route question to ask the school office.

The Sustainable City

Home to Fairgreen International School. A short run from Town Square and one of the nearer schools for families on this stretch.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school four things in one email

The entry route — separate, coordinated 0654 or combined 0653. The board. The syllabus code per science. And the practical assessment route for each. Those four answers determine everything that follows, and we will not propose a tutor without them.

  2. 02

    Diagnostic across all three sciences

The student works questions from each science at the correct entry level while a specialist watches, including one data or practical-reasoning question. That is how we find which subject has the most movement per hour, which is often not the one the student named.

  3. 03

We recommend the shared block first

Scientific calculation, command terms, data handling and practical-paper reasoning are examined identically across all three, so one block lifts three grades. Then one science weekly if the diagnostic still warrants it. Almost never three tutors, which is the larger sale and the worse plan.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson with the proposed specialist

One full lesson with the tutor who would continue, no card required and no obligation, at the time you intend to keep. If the explanation style does not suit your child, nothing has been spent and we propose somebody else.

  5. 05

Review against the specification, then stop

Progress reported against specification objectives rather than impressions, and a fixed-scope block ends when its scope is covered. No automatic rollover across three subjects, which is the quietest way a science household overspends on tutoring.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We ask about the practical route first

A written Alternative to Practical paper and assessed laboratory work are completely different preparation jobs, and almost no family has been told which their school entered. The answer changes where the recoverable marks sit and therefore what sessions should contain.

The shared layer bought once, not three times

Scientific calculation, command terms, data handling and practical reasoning are examined identically across biology, chemistry and physics. One six-to-ten session block lifts three grades, where three weekly tutors reach AED 1,800-3,600 a month at mid-band rates.

Priority set by diagnostic, not preference

Students name the science they dislike; marked papers show where marks are actually recoverable. A technique fault moves in weeks and a content gap does not move in a term, and only a marked paper distinguishes the two.

Honest about what online cannot do

Assessed bench technique happens at school and no tutor replaces it. What one-to-one work adds is prediction, anomaly handling, uncertainty from apparatus and writing up to the criteria — plus the whole of a written practical paper.

Correct UAE exam-series information

UAE candidates sit the June and November series; February/March is India-only. Pearson International GCSE runs May/June and November with November results in January, which makes a single-subject November block a real plan rather than a consolation.

AED figures attributed, including the triple multiple

Every rate names the provider that published it and the month it was read, and the table shows what three separate tutors would cost. None of the figures is an IB Gram price, and no grade is guaranteed.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Town Square: your questions answered

How do I find out how my child's science practicals are assessed?+

Ask the school office directly, per science. The two broad possibilities are a written Alternative to Practical paper, used on many Cambridge entries, or assessed laboratory work at school. Almost no family has been told which, and it matters because the answer changes where the recoverable marks sit. On a written route the whole assessed task is a document, which responds directly to one-to-one work. On a laboratory route the assessed technique happens at school and no tutor substitutes for it.

What skills does the written practical paper put marks on?+

Experimental understanding on paper rather than handling skill. Reading a measuring instrument to a precision the instrument justifies. Recognising that a described method cannot answer the question it was set. Identifying which variable needed controlling and was not. Building a results table with correct headings and units. Plotting points, drawing a line of best fit, reading a value back and saying what it means. Judging whether a stated conclusion is supported by the data shown. All of it is teachable one-to-one, and it is taught last in most schools.

Which science should a Town Square family work on first?+

The one with the most movement available per hour, which is frequently not the one the student complains about. Students name the science they dislike; a marked paper shows where marks are recoverable. A technique fault — knowledgeable answers in the wrong shape, right answers with no working, data questions guessed — moves in weeks. A genuine content gap, where a student cannot explain a basic process or rearrange a formula at all, does not move in a final term whatever anybody sells you.

Is it worth buying one block for all three sciences?+

Usually yes, and it is what we recommend most often. Four things are examined effectively identically across biology, chemistry and physics: scientific calculation, command terms, data handling and practical-paper reasoning. A six to ten session block aimed at those lifts three grades rather than one, occupies a single slot in the week, and finishes with a defined endpoint. Three separate weekly tutors reach roughly AED 1,800-3,600 a month at published mid-band rates and consume the student's whole week.

Why does buying three science tutors usually backfire?+

Because of the week rather than the money, though the money is real too. Three weekly sessions plus the homework three sciences generate plus a long Al Qudra Road school run leaves a student no independent study time — and independent practice is where science grades are actually made. The student ends up with shallow coverage of all three subjects and too little energy to use any of it. A shared block plus one weekly science leaves the week breathable, which is a condition of any of it working.

How do I tell whether Town Square schools entered triple or coordinated science?+

Triple award means biology, chemistry and physics as three independent qualifications covering their full syllabuses, awarding three grades — Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625, or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. Cambridge Coordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three disciplines in one double-award qualification with reduced content, awarding two grades. Combined Science 0653 is a single-award version at further reduced depth. The timetable does not reveal which: a student can have three science teachers and be entered for one qualification.

Does the science entry route affect A Level or IB options later?+

It can, and this is the consequence families learn latest. A Level sciences and IB Higher Level sciences generally expect separate-science grades at a good standard, so the coordinated or combined route can narrow which post-16 options are straightforwardly available. Check the published entry requirements of the schools and programmes your child may move into rather than relying on general advice. If a chemistry-requiring or physics-requiring degree is in view, the Year 9 entry decision matters more than any single grade.

Which syllabus codes should I ask the school for?+

For Cambridge separate sciences: 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry, 0625 Physics. For Cambridge combined routes: 0654 Coordinated Sciences double award or 0653 Combined Science single award. For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE: 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1. Ask per subject rather than assuming one answer covers everything, because Dubai departments make independent board decisions and a household can genuinely have biology on one board and physics on another. Ask for the practical route in the same email.

Can online tutoring help if the school assesses practicals in the lab?+

Partly, and we are specific about which part. Bench technique — handling, precision, following a method — is taught and assessed at school and no tutor replaces it, in person or online. What one-to-one work adds is everything around the bench: predicting what the experiment should produce before it runs, deciding what to do with an anomalous result rather than dropping it silently, calculating percentage uncertainty from the apparatus and judging whether the effect exceeds it, and writing up so the criteria are addressed.

Is there a science tutor near Town Square who knows our route?+

General science tutors, plenty. Tutors who have prepared students for your specific practical component and entry route, far fewer, and the drive narrows the pool before any of that is considered. Dubai's tutoring supply clusters around the older school corridors rather than the newer Dubailand communities, and Town Square is recently settled so the neighbour network that vets tutors elsewhere is thin. Online matching removes the proximity filter, which was never the variable that decided the marks.

What should a three-science family in Town Square expect to spend?+

At published Dubai rates read in October 2026, one weekly hour runs AED 240-600 a month at the budget band, AED 600-1,200 mid-tier and AED 1,000-2,000 or more at the specialist exam-year band. For three separate weekly tutors, multiply: AED 720-1,800, AED 1,800-3,600 and AED 3,000-6,000 or more respectively. Those are the providers' published figures, not ours. The shared-skills block occupies one slot and covers all three, which is why we recommend it before anything else.

Can my child resit one science in February or March?+

Not in the UAE. Cambridge's February/March series is offered to India only, and UAE candidates sit the June and November series. The belief circulates widely here and planning around it costs a term, so confirm with your school. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. For a three-science family the November route is genuinely strategic: re-enter the single weak subject, work a narrow block over the summer and first term, and the January result still updates post-16 applications.

My child is weak in all three sciences after mocks. What now?+

Triage, honestly. Three grades cannot all be lifted substantially in a final term, and a provider implying otherwise is selling rather than advising. After a diagnostic we would normally propose the shared layer first — calculation, command terms, data handling, practical-paper reasoning — because it touches all three at once, plus focused weekly work on whichever single science shows the most movement per hour. For another subject, a November entry with a narrow summer block is frequently the better outcome.

Does a science tutor in Dubai need a permit?+

Yes. Any individual charging for private tuition in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with MoHRE listing a two-working-day completion time through its smart app, website or e-services. Eligibility covers school and sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Since it costs nothing and takes two days, lacking one is a choice. Ask to see it and verify with MoHRE.

Could we just ask my child's own science teacher to tutor them?+

No, and in science this is particularly frustrating, because the person who knows exactly which practical route and entry the department chose is precisely the person who may not be engaged privately. The MoHRE permit's code of conduct bars a tutor from serving students affiliated with their own school, and press reporting on Abu Dhabi's ADEK professional-ethics rules describes the same prohibition there. What you can do is ask the department for additional support within school, naming the component specifically rather than asking generally.

Four answers from the school office first

Before hiring an IGCSE science tutor in Town Square, send the school office one email asking four things: the entry route, the board, the syllabus code of each science, and how the practical component is assessed in each. With those in hand the conversation changes from who is available to who has prepared students for that exact component. Send us the answers plus what time your child gets home, and we will diagnose all three sciences, recommend the shared-skills block where it is the better value, and arrange a free trial lesson. One-to-one over live video, no UAE home visits.
