IB & IGCSE in Town Square

How do you tell whether a tutor actually knows the IB?

The honest difficulty with searching for an IB tutor near Town Square is not scarcity of candidates. It is that a parent has no way to distinguish between them. Everybody's profile says experienced IB tutor. Everybody has a degree in something relevant. Everybody is confident on the phone. And the difference between a tutor who has taken a named Diploma course to final grade and a graduate who has read the syllabus is invisible at the point of hiring and expensive to discover in February.

So this page is a verification tool rather than a sales pitch. The questions below are the ones we would want a parent to ask us, and they work on any provider. They are deliberately specific, because specificity is the whole test: somebody who has taught Chemistry Higher Level can tell you what the Internal Assessment criteria are called and roughly what each is worth without pausing. Somebody who has not will reach for general reassurance about experience and passion, and that reach is the answer.

Two structural facts make the questions necessary. First, nobody in the UAE accredits private tutors. Five separate regulators oversee private schools — KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah — and none of them vets tutors. The only requirement on an individual is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which confirms permission to work rather than subject competence.

Second, Town Square's geography removes the usual informal check. In an established community a parent hears about a tutor from three other parents whose children used them. Town Square is a Nshama development off Al Qudra Road, filled relatively recently with young families, and that word-of-mouth network is thin precisely where it would be most useful. Families here are hiring strangers more often than families in Jumeirah or Mirdif are.

IB Gram's position is that the verification problem is better solved by exposure than by assertion. Every match we propose comes with a free trial lesson taught by the specialist who would continue — not a sales call, not a different tutor — and the questions on this page are ones you should put to that person during or after it. If any answer is vague, that is useful information about the match, and we would rather you found out in a free hour than in March.

Lessons for Town Square families are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We make no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run in India only. That is relevant to verification too, because it means the match is made on who has taught the course rather than on who lives within driving distance of Al Qudra Road.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A tutor who knows one IB programme does not automatically know another, and the verification questions differ by programme. These are the stages we cover for Town Square families.

PYPAges 3-12 · Foundation to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry, continuous teacher assessment against learning outcomes, portfolios, and the Year 6 Exhibition. There are no examinations and no grades in the familiar sense, which means a tutor's job is building reading fluency, number sense and the ability to explain a method rather than preparing for anything.

The verification question at this stage is simple: ask what the PYP Exhibition is and when it happens. A tutor who has worked with PYP children will describe a self-directed inquiry presented to the school community. A Diploma tutor taking on primary work for the fee will not know, which is fine to discover before you hire rather than after.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked 0-8, differing by subject group. Sciences mark knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Year 11 adds the Personal Project, assessed against its own criteria.

Ask an MYP candidate to name the four criteria for the subject group in question. Somebody who has taught it names them; somebody who has not says the MYP is criterion-based and moves on. That single question filters more effectively than any qualification list, and it takes fifteen seconds.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher Level and three Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject carries an Internal Assessment marked internally and moderated by the IB. The total runs to 45 points including up to three bonus points from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix.

For the Diploma the useful questions are about the Internal Assessment criteria for the specific subject, what Higher Level adds over Standard, and where students in that subject habitually lose marks. All three have concrete answers, and all three are hard to bluff for more than a sentence.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

At least two DP courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project, service learning, personal and professional skills and language development. The DP courses inside it are marked to exactly the same standard as a full Diploma candidate's.

Rare in Dubai, so Town Square families usually meet the CP as a mid-sixth-form option. If a tutor claims CP experience, ask what the reflective project is and how it differs from the Extended Essay — it is a specific component and the answer is checkable against the school's own documentation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IB subjects Town Square families ask about most, each with the detail a genuine specialist in it will know immediately. Use these as verification prompts as much as a coverage list.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

A real specialist will tell you the Exploration is worth a fifth of the grade, that HL adds a third paper, and that most students who name calculus as the problem actually have an algebraic weakness underneath it. Ask what proof by induction is used for.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Ask what AI Higher Level contains that surprises students. The answer is matrices, graph theory and complex numbers, which is not what anyone expects from the modelling route. A tutor who says AI is the easier course has told you they do not teach it.

Physics

HL and SL

Ask how uncertainties propagate through a multiplication and what linearising a graph means. Both are routine for a physics specialist and both are examined constantly. Vagueness here is decisive, because these skills carry more marks than any single content topic.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Ask how they teach nucleophilic substitution. A specialist describes electron density and partial charge; a generalist describes reagents and products. The second answer predicts a term of memorisation that collapses on an unfamiliar molecule.

Biology

HL and SL

Ask which command terms students most often misread. The answer should be concrete — outline versus explain, discuss versus evaluate — because in biology that distinction decides more marks than content recall does.

Economics

HL and SL

Ask what the commentaries are assessed on. A specialist will say application to a named real article and will mention that the choice of article sets the ceiling. A generalist will talk about understanding economic concepts.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Ask what the Individual Oral requires. The answer involves a global issue and two works, prepared properly. Anybody describing it as a presentation about a book has not supervised one.

Business Management

HL and SL

Ask whether a SWOT analysis earns marks on its own. The correct answer is no — marks sit in applying it to the case material and reaching a supported judgement — and it is a question that separates teaching from tutoring quickly.

Psychology

HL and SL

Ask what has to anchor every argument. The answer is a named study with its method and findings. A tutor who talks about understanding psychological theory in general is describing a different course.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Ask what the two assessed components are. The exhibition of three objects and the prescribed-title essay. TOK is the component most often claimed and least often genuinely covered, so this question matters more here than elsewhere.

Extended Essay supervision support

Core

Ask how many criteria it is marked against and what usually decides the grade. Five criteria, and the research question. Any answer that starts with writing quality rather than question design suggests the essay has not been supervised before.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Ask what the written papers test beyond programming. Architecture, networks and abstract data structures. Students comfortable at a keyboard lose marks tracing algorithms by hand, which a specialist will raise unprompted.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Town Square families work with us, all delivered online over live video. The verification questions apply to all three, and the trial lesson is where you ask them.

Weekly one-to-one, same specialist

A fixed slot with one tutor following your child's school scheme of work. This is the mode in which verification matters most, because you are buying months rather than hours, and it is also the mode in which a good match compounds — by month three the tutor knows which errors are habits.

  • Sixty or ninety minutes weekly in a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot
  • Matched to the named course at the named level
  • Reviews stated in criterion and paper terms, so progress is checkable
  • Rescheduling handled with the tutor directly

Short diagnostic engagement

Two or three sessions with a specialist whose only brief is to find out what is actually wrong and report honestly, including the possibility that little is. A sensible first purchase for a family who has been burned by a previous arrangement and wants evidence before committing to a term.

  • A defined, short scope agreed in advance
  • Written findings in terms of criteria and paper technique
  • No obligation to continue with us afterwards
  • Frequently ends with a narrower recommendation than expected

Internal Assessment and Extended Essay coaching

Process support on the coursework that decides much of a Diploma score. The tutor shapes a workable research question, checks the method can produce usable data, reads a draft against the criteria and explains what each criterion asks. Everything submitted is written by the student.

  • Research question narrowed until it is answerable in the word limit
  • Method reviewed for measurable variables and sufficient repeats
  • Criterion-level feedback with mark allocations explained
  • No drafting, no ghost-writing, no editing to a finish

01

Ten questions that tell you whether a tutor knows the Diploma

Use these on anybody, including us. They are specific on purpose: specificity is the test. A tutor who has taken a named Diploma course to final grade answers each of them in a sentence or two without hesitation, because these are the things they think about weekly. A tutor who has read the syllabus will produce general reassurance about experience, rapport and passion, and the substitution is audible.

The questions do not require you to know the answers yourself. What you are listening for is whether the reply is concrete and immediate or general and warm. A specialist says the Exploration is twenty per cent of the maths grade and is usually lost on personal engagement rather than mathematics. A generalist says they have helped many students with internal assessments.

Two of the ten are about honesty rather than competence, and they matter at least as much. Asking what a tutor will and will not do with an Internal Assessment should produce an immediate, clear boundary — teaching, explaining criteria, reviewing method, feedback on the student's own draft, and nothing beyond that. Hesitation there, or an offer to help more than that, is the single most useful red flag available in this market.

Ask them in the trial lesson or immediately after it, with the tutor who would actually teach your child, rather than on an initial call with a coordinator. The coordinator's answers tell you about the company. The tutor's answers tell you about the thing you are buying.

Credential claims, and how to check each one

The claims in this market fall into three groups: ones that can be verified, ones that cannot, and ones that describe something which does not exist. Knowing which is which saves a lot of time.

Verifiable: the MoHRE private tuition work permit. It is issued under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and applied for through MoHRE's smart app, website or e-services with a stated two-working-day completion time. Ask to see it and check it with MoHRE. Also verifiable: a university degree, a teaching qualification, and whether a named school currently employs somebody, by asking the school.

Not verifiable by a parent: current IB examiner status. We do not describe our own tutors as examiners for this reason, and you should treat any such claim as unevidenced unless the provider can show you something concrete. Examiner status also does not confer access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, and any implication that it does should end the conversation rather than advance it.

Describes nothing that exists: regulator approval for tutors. Five bodies regulate private schools across the emirates — KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge and the federal Ministry of Education — and none vets private tutors. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a real thing issued to training institutes with premises, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry, and if a provider claims one, ask for the number. IB Gram holds no regulator or awarding-body approval, accreditation, licence or partnership of any kind, has no UAE office or centre, and claims none.

CREDENTIAL CLAIMS: VERIFIABLE, UNVERIFIABLE, OR FICTIONAL

03

What the Diploma actually requires, so you can judge the answers

  • Six subjects, three HL and three SL, plus TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS
  • Six Internal Assessments with school-set deadlines clustered in two terms
  • UAE schools sit the May session; specific IB dates come from the school, not us
  • Cambridge February/March is India-only; UAE candidates sit June and November

The verification questions work better if you know roughly what the course involves, so here is the structure in plain terms. A full Diploma candidate takes six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard. Alongside those sit three core components: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay of 4,000 words, and Creativity, Activity, Service. The total score runs to 45, which is six subjects marked out of seven plus up to three bonus points from the matrix combining the TOK and Extended Essay grades.

Every subject also carries an Internal Assessment, marked by the school teacher and moderated by the IB. That means a full candidate is running six separate coursework projects with six internal deadlines, all set by the school rather than by the IB, and nearly all landing in the same two terms. Understanding this is what tells you whether a tutor's plan is realistic: a tutor who treats a subject in isolation is ignoring the five other deadlines competing for the same evenings.

UAE schools sit the Diploma in the May session. We publish no specific IB date, and the reason is worth knowing as a verification point in itself: the IB's own site blocks automated retrieval, so no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from ibo.org. Any provider quoting you a precise IB exam or results date should be asked where they read it. Get dates from your school's IB coordinator or ibo.org.

Cambridge and Pearson dates, by contrast, are published and usable. Cambridge runs International GCSE and O Level in June and November series, with the February/March series offered to India only, so UAE candidates sit June and November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November; its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November results reach students in January, with the November 2025 results landing on 22 January 2026.

04

What a first session should look like

  • Real past-paper questions inside the first ten minutes, not a rapport chat
  • A specific fault list rather than a general assessment of ability
  • An honest timescale, including when the time available is too short
  • Ask the ten questions at the end of the trial, having watched them teach

Verification continues into the first hour, and what happens in it is informative. A tutor who spends the session establishing rapport and asking how your child feels about the subject has not diagnosed anything, however pleasant the hour was. A tutor who puts real past-paper questions in front of the student within the first ten minutes and watches them work is doing the job.

What a good diagnostic produces is narrower than most families expect. Not a general assessment of ability, but a specific list: method is not being written down, so method marks are being forfeited. Command terms are being misread, so correct knowledge is producing wrong-shaped answers. One topic was missed during a move between schools. The uncertainty work has never been taught properly. Each of those is a plan rather than a diagnosis.

The second thing a good first session produces is a realistic timescale. A technique fault takes a few weeks of marked practice. A missing topic takes a few sessions. A missing year of foundations takes longer than the time available in February of Year 13, and a tutor who says so has told you something valuable about how they will handle the rest of the arrangement.

Our trial lesson is designed to be exactly this: one full session with the specialist who would continue, no card required and no obligation, after which you have a concrete account of what is wrong rather than an impression. If that account is vague, the match is wrong and we would rather you knew in a free hour. The verification questions in the table above are best asked at the end of this session, when you have seen the person work.

05

What a tutor may and may not do with Diploma coursework

  • Permitted: teaching content, explaining criteria, coaching a question, reviewing method, feedback on the student's own draft
  • Not permitted: writing, drafting, rewriting, templating or editing coursework to a finish
  • No awarding-body material supplied as downloads — official sources linked
  • Hesitation about this boundary is the most useful red flag in the market

Two of the ten verification questions are about this, and they deserve the detail, because this search result contains operators who sell finished coursework. One advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. Buying one is not a shortcut with a price; it is an academic-honesty breach, and the IB withdraws awards for malpractice.

The permitted ground is wide. A tutor may teach the content the assessment rests on. They may explain what each criterion asks for and what marks it carries. They may help narrow a research question until it is answerable within the word limit. They may review a method and say that it will not generate usable data. They may read a draft the student has written and give feedback on it. All of that is teaching and all of it is permitted.

What a tutor may not do is produce the work: not write a section, not supply text to insert, not rewrite the student's prose, not provide a template needing only numbers, not edit a draft to a finish so the submitted text is substantially theirs. The student signs a declaration of authorship and the supervisor signs alongside, so the line is practical rather than ceremonial.

We also do not supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides as downloads. Those are the awarding bodies' copyright, and for unreleased material there is a malpractice exposure as well. We cite them, link the official source and teach from them. If a provider offers you a folder of mark schemes, that is a question worth asking about rather than a benefit.

06

What the market charges, with the publisher named

Price is part of verification, because a rate quoted with no reference point tells you nothing. Three of the six most visible competitor pages in this search publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars, which is not a currency a Town Square family transacts in.

The published Dubai figures, read from provider pages in October 2026. Budget online tutoring from AED 33-65 an hour, with Tutopiya at AED 33-52 and EdFlik at AED 45-65. Qualified online subject tutors AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate putting the band at AED 200-450 plus. In-home one-to-one AED 180-500 including travel. Premium named tutors AED 500-650 and above, with BartyED at AED 650.

Ask for the monthly figure rather than the hourly one, because the monthly figure is what actually leaves your account, and a tutor who cannot produce it has not thought about the Diploma as a two-year commitment. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour are AED 240-600 at the budget band, AED 600-1,200 mid-tier, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Advertised packages sit inside those brackets at around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, which works out near AED 100 a session, and AED 1,599-1,799 for four in-home two-hour visits, which is closer to AED 400 a visit once the tutor's drive into Town Square is inside the price. Two offers that look similar by the month are rarely buying the same hour.

Each figure belongs to the organisation named beside it. None is an IB Gram price — we publish no rate card on these pages, because the honest number depends on subject, level and weeks remaining. One verification point on price: ask whether a figure is per hour or per lesson and how long a lesson is, because a fifty-minute session priced as an hour is a difference nobody volunteers.

When we tell you not to buy sessions

  • No specialist free: we decline rather than substitute a generalist
  • Too little time: we name the narrower thing that can still move
  • Nothing wrong: sometimes the report is fine and the scale was unfamiliar
  • A school conversation needed instead: we say so rather than take the booking

One of the ten questions asks what would make a provider advise against buying, and we should answer our own question. There are four situations in which we say no or not yet.

The first is no specialist available. Theory of Knowledge at short notice, Higher Level Computer Science, smaller Group 2 languages, Music and Film are genuinely scarce, and in some terms we cannot cover them. We decline rather than putting a general tutor in front of a Higher Level candidate, and we have lost enquiries doing it. If the only matching specialist is in a different time zone, we say so and offer the slots that actually exist.

The second is too little time to matter. A student in March of Year 13 missing a year of foundations in a subject cannot have that replaced in eight weeks, and selling the attempt is selling hope. What we will say in that case is which narrower thing can still move — usually technique, command terms and showing method — and that concentrating there is worth more than general coverage.

The third is that nothing is wrong. We have read MYP reports where the criterion profile describes a student doing perfectly well and the parents had been reading an unfamiliar scale as a bad result. The fourth is where the honest answer is a school conversation rather than a tutor: a missed topic that the school should and would reteach, a timetable problem, or a pastoral issue that tutoring would paper over. We say that instead of taking the booking.

We also never offer a UAE home visit as a fallback, because there is no UAE visiting service to fall back on. IB Gram has no office, centre or branch here and nobody on our roster will arrive at a Town Square address.

08

What we do not claim, and why that is a verification point

  • No self-generated ratings and no statistics without n, date and method
  • No regulator claims, no UAE office, no non-UAE conversion number
  • No grade, points or improvement guarantees
  • No suggestion that tutoring is required for equivalency or admission

Absences are evidence too, and the things missing from this page are things competitors in this search result do publish.

No star rating, no satisfaction percentage, no average points total achieved by students we have supported. Competitors publish figures like 4.9 from several hundred reviews, sometimes two conflicting versions in the same document, and one shows a rating from twenty reviews alongside a far larger claimed student count. None states a sample size, a date or a method. A number without those three is decoration, and self-asserted review markup is against Google's structured-data policy as well.

No regulator or awarding-body claim, no UAE address, no non-UAE phone number as the conversion path, and no examiner descriptions we cannot evidence. Two ranking competitors route UAE parents to numbers in another country, and one shows a Dubai footer address on an Abu Dhabi page. Both are trust failures, and the second is a misrepresentation.

And no guarantee of a grade, a points total or an improvement, because nobody can honestly offer one and the offer itself is diagnostic of the provider. We also will not imply that tutoring is required for Ministry of Education equivalency, university admission or school progression — that is a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process, and it is worth noticing when anybody makes it to you.

Finally, no school or group is described here as a partner or client. Several competitors list twenty-five or more schools under a trusted-by heading with no relationship behind it, and one lists a school that appears not to exist. We name schools only to describe the landscape around Town Square, and we say so under every list, because a school name used as an implied endorsement is the easiest claim in this market to make and one of the easiest to check.

Where we tutor

Town Square and the communities around it

This stretch of Dubailand shares one feature that makes verification harder: it is newly populated, so the informal parent network that vets tutors elsewhere is still thin.

Town Square

A Nshama community off Al Qudra Road, mostly apartments and townhouses filled recently by younger families. Word-of-mouth tutor recommendations are scarcer here than in longer-established districts.

Mudon

The nearest Dubai Properties community, similarly young. Families here are often hiring their first tutor rather than their third, which is exactly when a verification checklist is worth having.

Remraam

Apartment community served by South View School. The shortest school run on this stretch, and a tighter community network than Town Square has yet developed.

Serena

A quiet townhouse community on the same corridor, with the same structure and the same absence of any local pool of named-course Diploma specialists.

Arabian Ranches 3

Nearest established community towards Emirates Road. Shares the school pool, and an older parent network that Town Square families often borrow recommendations from.

DAMAC Hills 2

Further out along Al Qudra Road, villa-weighted rather than apartment-weighted, facing the same scarcity of Higher Level specialists within driving distance.

The Sustainable City

Home to Fairgreen International School, which runs the IB continuum and is the nearest IB provision for many Town Square families.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the course, the level and the school

The specific course and level, not IB maths or IB science, plus the school and what the last report or mock said. That is what determines which specialists are even candidates, and it is the first thing a genuine specialist will ask you for as well.

  2. 02

We propose one named specialist, not a shortlist

A shortlist shifts the verification burden onto you with no information to do it with. We propose the person we think fits, say why, and let the trial lesson test it. If it is wrong we propose somebody else at no cost.

  3. 03

Diagnostic in the first session, on real questions

Past-paper questions at your child's level within the first ten minutes, with the specialist watching rather than chatting. What comes out is a specific fault list — method not shown, command terms misread, one topic missed — and a realistic timescale for each.

Ask the ten questions at the end of the trial

Having watched the person teach, put the verification questions to them directly. Immediate, concrete answers are the thing to listen for, especially on the coursework boundary. Vagueness there is the most useful signal available, and better found in a free hour.

Then a fixed slot, with checkable reviews

A weekly time in Gulf Standard Time that stays put, and progress reported in criterion and paper terms rather than impressions. If a review cannot name what has changed, that is where we change the plan or the tutor rather than reassure you.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We publish the test you should apply to us

Ten specific questions about criteria, papers, loss patterns and the coursework boundary, with what a real answer sounds like beside each. They work on any provider in this search result, which is the point of printing them.

Claims we cannot evidence, we do not make

No regulator approval, because none exists for tutors. No examiner descriptions, because current examiner status is not something we can show you. No ratings, because we cannot give you the sample size, date and method that would make one mean anything.

Verification happens in a free hour

One full trial lesson with the specialist who would continue, no card and no obligation, after which you have a concrete fault list rather than an impression — and the chance to ask the ten questions having watched them work.

One named specialist, not a shortlist

Handing a parent five profiles moves the judgement to the person with the least information. We propose one match, explain the reasoning, and let the trial test it. If it is wrong, we propose another at no cost.

We answer our own question about declining

Four situations in which we say no: no specialist free, too little time to matter, nothing actually wrong, or a school conversation needed instead. Each has cost us enquiries, which is what makes the list worth publishing.

AED figures with the publisher and the month

Three of six ranking competitors publish no price and two quote US dollars. Every rate here names the provider that published it and the month it was read, and none is presented as an IB Gram price.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Town Square: your questions answered

How can I tell whether an IB tutor near Town Square is genuine?+

Ask specific questions and listen for whether the answer is concrete or warm. Which exact course and level do you teach, in your own words? What is the Internal Assessment worth in that subject and what are its criteria called? What does Higher Level add? Where do students in this subject habitually lose marks? A specialist answers each in a sentence without pausing, because these are weekly concerns for them. A non-specialist substitutes general reassurance about experience and rapport, and that substitution is the answer.

Does any UAE authority approve or vet private tutors?+

No. Five bodies regulate private schools — KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education for Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah — and none of them vets tutors. The only requirement on an individual is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which confirms permission to work rather than subject competence. Any provider describing its tutors as approved by an education regulator is describing something that does not exist.

What single question filters out most non-specialists?+

What will you not do with an Internal Assessment or Extended Essay? A genuine specialist gives an immediate, clear boundary: teach the content, explain the criteria and mark allocations, help narrow the research question, review whether a method produces usable data, give feedback on the student's own draft, and nothing beyond that. Hesitation, or an offer to help with the writing, tells you both that they have not supervised the component and that they are relaxed about a rule that can cost your child their Diploma.

Should I ask whether a tutor is an IB examiner?+

Ask, and then ask for evidence, because the claim is common and almost never checkable by a parent. We do not describe our own tutors as examiners for exactly that reason. The more important point is what examiner status would mean if true: nothing about access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. Any provider implying that an examiner can tell you what is coming or how marking really works has made a claim that should end the conversation rather than advance it.

What should the first session with a new IB tutor look like?+

Real past-paper questions at your child's level within the first ten minutes, with the tutor watching them work rather than discussing how they feel about the subject. What should come out is a specific fault list — method not written down, command terms misread, one topic missed during a school move, uncertainty work never properly taught — plus a realistic timescale for each. A pleasant rapport-building hour that produces no fault list has diagnosed nothing, whatever it felt like.

Is it harder to find a trustworthy tutor in a newer community like Town Square?+

In one specific way, yes. Town Square is a Nshama development off Al Qudra Road filled relatively recently by younger families, so the informal parent network that vets tutors in older districts is still thin. Families here are more often hiring a stranger than hiring their third recommendation. That is why a verification checklist is worth more here than in Jumeirah or Mirdif, and why a free trial lesson with the person who would actually teach is the most useful thing a provider can offer.

Why does nobody publish exact IB exam dates, including you?+

We do not publish them because we cannot verify them. The IB's own site blocks automated retrieval, so no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from ibo.org, and putting an unverified date in front of a parent who will plan around it is worse than saying nothing. UAE schools sit the May session; get exact dates from your school's IB coordinator or ibo.org. Treat any provider quoting you a precise IB date as somebody to ask a source from.

How do I check the MoHRE permit, and what does it prove?+

Ask to see it and verify it through MoHRE's e-services. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time via its smart app, website or e-services. Because it costs nothing and takes two days, lacking one is a choice rather than an obstacle. What it proves is permission to tutor — not subject knowledge, and not that the person has taught your child's course.

Can we hire my child's own school teacher privately in Dubai?+

No. The MoHRE permit's code of conduct bars a tutor from serving students affiliated with their own school, and press reporting on Abu Dhabi's ADEK professional-ethics rules describes the same prohibition for school staff there. It is the option families most want and the one least available. If a provider markets your child's own teacher privately, that tells you how carefully it reads the rules it operates under, which is worth knowing before anything else about it.

What does the Diploma involve, so I can judge a tutor's answers?+

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The total runs to 45 points, including up to three bonus points from the matrix combining TOK and Extended Essay grades. Every subject also carries an Internal Assessment marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB, so a full candidate runs six coursework projects with school-set deadlines clustered in two terms. A tutor who ignores the other five deadlines is not planning realistically.

Should a provider give me a shortlist of tutors to choose from?+

It sounds generous and it moves the judgement to the person with the least information. A parent comparing five profiles is comparing self-descriptions, which is exactly what this page argues against relying on. We propose one named specialist, say why we think they fit, and let a free trial lesson test it; if the match is wrong we propose somebody else at no cost. The hour of watching somebody teach is worth more than five profiles and a phone call.

What would make you tell a Town Square family not to buy sessions?+

Four things, and we have lost enquiries to each. No specialist free — Theory of Knowledge at short notice, Higher Level Computer Science, smaller languages — in which case we decline rather than substitute a generalist. Too little time to matter, where we name the narrower thing that can still move instead. Nothing actually wrong, which happens with MYP criterion reports read as bad results. And where a school conversation is the right answer: a missed topic the school would reteach, or a pastoral issue tutoring would paper over.

Why should I distrust a star rating on a tutoring site?+

Because almost none of them states a sample size, a date or a method, and without those three a rating is decoration. Competitors in this market publish figures like 4.9 from several hundred reviews, occasionally in two conflicting versions on the same page, and one shows five stars from twenty reviews next to a claimed student count orders of magnitude larger. Self-asserted review markup also breaches Google's structured-data policy. We publish no rating at all, which is why this page gives you questions instead.

Will any of your tutors come to our home in Town Square?+

No. IB Gram delivers one-to-one IB tuition to Town Square over live video and makes no home visits anywhere in the UAE — in-home tutoring is a service we run in India only, and there is no UAE visiting arrangement at any price. We also hold no UAE office, centre or branch. Other Dubai providers do visit, at published rates of AED 180-500 an hour including travel. If you want in-home delivery, the verification questions on this page still apply, and so does asking for the permit.

What should I ask about price before agreeing to anything?+

Whether the figure is per hour or per lesson and how long a lesson runs, because a fifty-minute session priced as an hour is an increase nobody volunteers. The single-session price with no block. What happens if you stop after one. The cancellation and reschedule terms, which matter with a long school run. Any travel surcharge into Dubailand. Whether diagnostics, reports or materials are charged separately — and if materials are, what is being supplied, since awarding-body papers are copyright.
