IB Retake Tutor in the UAE

An IB retake tutor in the UAE is hired against a clock, not a syllabus. By the time a family searches for one, the statement of results is already on the screen, a university offer is either held or lost, and the entry deadline for the next session sits weeks away. IB Gram matches your child with a specialist for the exact papers that went wrong, and lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. This page counts the retake year backwards, from the paper to the week you are reading this.

  • Live one-to-one video lessons, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time
  • One free trial lesson first, with no card details taken
  • Tutors teach and review work; they never produce assessed work
  • Every plan counted backwards from your child's entry deadline

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What changes the day a retake becomes the plan

A family searching for an IB retake tutor in the UAE is almost never shopping. The statement of results arrived a day or two ago, one or two grades came in below the predicted ones, and a university reply is sitting in an inbox. The IB examines twice a year, in May and in November, so the first question is not which tutor to hire. It is which session to enter. That single answer sets the budget, the weekly hours and the shape of the next ten months, and it has to be given quickly.

Retake teaching is a different job from Diploma teaching. The course has already been taught once and the papers have already been sat, so nothing on the syllabus is new. What is missing is a diagnosis. A grade 4 in Chemistry can come from an internal mark that was never going to lift the total, from a data-analysis paper that collapsed under time pressure, or from two topics revised the week before the exam and never properly understood. Each of those costs a different number of hours and needs a different kind of session, and guessing between them wastes the term.

Three clocks run at the same time, and they are not synchronised. The board's entry deadline closes months before the paper is sat. The university's offer carries its own reply date, which nobody at the school controls. The Ministry of Education equivalency file cannot be completed until a final certificate exists. Families who lose a retake year usually lose it to the second and third clocks rather than the first, because the tuition started on time and the paperwork did not. Everything on this page is organised around those dates, counted backwards from the paper.

Pricing in this market is wide and poorly published. Rates read on UAE provider pages in October 2026 run from AED 45 an hour for a university-student tutor to AED 650 an hour at the premium end, and most of the pages ranking for retake searches publish no figure at all. The AED table further down this page quotes what each provider puts on its own site, with the month it was read. IB Gram's own position is simpler: a free trial lesson, then a quote for the plan your child actually needs, with the hours written down before anyone pays.

One honesty note about dates. The IB publishes its session windows, upload deadlines and results dates on ibo.org, and those pages block automated checking, so no IB date is printed anywhere on this page. Cambridge and Pearson dates are quoted below because they come from the boards' own published key-dates documents. For your child's session, the exact entry deadline and results date come from the IB coordinator at the school, or from ibo.org read on the day you need it. A retake plan built on a date nobody verified is the most expensive mistake available here.

At a glance

  • Retakes are entered subject by subject, not as a whole Diploma, in most cases
  • The entry deadline, not the exam date, is the one that ends the decision
  • A specific paper diagnosis changes the hours needed by a factor of three
  • Enquiry upon results and a retake entry are separate decisions with separate windows
  • Equivalency and university replies run on calendars the school does not set
  • Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, in UAE evening slots
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four IB routes bring families to a retake conversation, and they behave differently. A full Diploma candidate is managing failing conditions. A courses candidate is managing one certificate. A CP student is managing the Diploma course inside a wider qualification. An MYP student is managing the year before any of it matters.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The award depends on a points total and on a set of failing conditions covering low individual grades and the core components. A Diploma can be missed on points, on a single condition, or on both, and the repair plan is different in each case. The coordinator's statement of results names which one applies.

Most UAE Diploma candidates sit in May with their cohort, and schools here vary in whether they register second-attempt candidates at all. Dubai's private sector had 227 schools in the 2024-25 KHDA figures, with International Baccalaureate programmes covering about 7% of pupils, so the pool of schools able to enter a repeat candidate is smaller than the overall school count suggests.

DPCAges 16-19 · certificate route

Diploma Programme Courses

A student takes individual DP subjects and receives a certificate for each, without attempting the full Diploma award. For a family deciding what to do after a disappointing results day, the courses route is sometimes the practical answer: repeat the one subject a university actually asked for, rather than re-entering six and the core alongside them.

UAE universities and the Ministry of Education assess what the certificate shows, not how many subjects sat behind it, so a courses entry can be enough to satisfy a specific subject condition. The equivalency rules for the IB route are not stated in the public clarifications we hold, which is why this page sends every family to moe.gov.ae and the attestation desk in their emirate before planning around a points figure.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP combines at least two DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, a service element and a language component. When a CP student's DP course grade lands below what a progression route needs, only that course is repeated. The career-related study and the reflective project are not re-sat because of a paper result.

CP provision in the UAE is thinner than DP provision, so a CP candidate repeating a course often needs a subject specialist who is not on the staff of their own school. Live online delivery is what makes that match possible from Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain as easily as from Jumeirah, and the lesson time is set in Gulf Standard Time either way.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP ends in on-screen examinations and ePortfolios for schools that run eAssessment. An MYP result does not get retaken in the way a Diploma subject does, but a weak MYP year is the single best predictor of a Diploma subject that will need repeating two years later, particularly in Mathematics and the sciences.

Several UAE schools run the MYP into an IGCSE year rather than straight into the Diploma, which changes what a Year 11 student has actually been assessed on. Families who fix an MYP Mathematics gap in Year 10 rarely meet a retake conversation at all, and that is the cheapest version of this page's advice.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects UAE families most often return to for a second attempt, with the component where the marks usually went. A retake plan that names the paper is worth three that name the subject, because the hours go where the marks are rather than across a syllabus the student has already covered once.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At Higher Level the non-calculator Paper 1 and the calculator Paper 2 carry 30% each, Paper 3 carries 20% and the exploration 20%. Retake marks are usually sitting in Paper 1 algebra and in the extended-response Paper 3, where a student who can do every topic separately cannot hold a long problem together.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Both papers allow a calculator, which hides the problem until results day: students lose marks on interpretation and on written justification rather than on computation. At SL the two papers carry 40% each with the exploration at 20%. A repeat here is often four weeks of statistics and modelling, not a full re-teach.

Physics

HL and SL

The scientific investigation carries 20% of the grade and is frequently the component that caps a result before the exams begin. In the papers, the marks go on multi-step mechanics, on circuits, and on the extended questions that ask for a derivation. HL candidates repeating Physics usually need Paper 2 technique more than new content.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms, energetics and the data-based questions are where repeat candidates lose most. The internal investigation again carries 20%, so a family should establish what that mark was before buying a single hour of paper practice. A low internal mark and strong papers is a different plan from the reverse.

Biology

HL and SL

Biology retakes are rarely about recall. They are about command terms: outline, explain, evaluate and distinguish each carry a different expectation, and a student who answers all four as describe loses marks across every paper. Pair that with the statistics and experimental-design questions, which reward practice rather than revision.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams drawn without labels, evaluation written as a conclusion rather than as argument, and the HL quantitative paper are the three repeat failure points. The internal commentaries are already banked by the time results arrive, so a second attempt has to decide whether new commentaries are submitted or the existing mark is carried.

Business Management

HL and SL

The case study released ahead of the exam is where a retake candidate gains fastest, because the content is known months in advance and most students under-prepare it. Marks also go on applying tools to the stimulus instead of describing them, which is a writing habit a tutor can change in a handful of sessions.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is unseen guided analysis and Paper 2 is comparative. At HL the essay adds a fourth component. Retake candidates almost always need Paper 1: a repeatable method for reading an unseen text under time, rather than more texts. The individual oral mark is usually already fixed.

History

HL and SL

Paper 1 source work has its own mark scheme and rewards a drilled routine; Paper 2 rewards two well-chosen case studies rather than broad coverage; the HL Paper 3 regional option is where candidates run out of time. A second attempt in History is mostly timed writing with marked feedback, not re-reading.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies quoted without dates, ethics questions answered generically, and the research-methods paper at HL account for most of the lost marks. The internal experimental study is a report against published criteria, so a retake candidate needs to know whether that mark is being carried before planning anything else.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four shapes of support cover almost every retake conversation. The difference between them is time, not quality: a seventeen-week block and a three-week repair job are answers to different questions, and quoting the wrong one wastes a family's money as surely as hiring the wrong tutor does.

The seventeen-week retake block

The standard shape for one or two subjects entered into the next available session. Two sessions a week per subject, a marked paper every fortnight, and a written plan dated backwards from the first paper. The first three weeks are diagnosis and syllabus triage rather than teaching, which is what stops the block from becoming a second full course.

  • Two live one-to-one sessions a week per subject, 60 or 90 minutes
  • One full past paper under exam conditions every second week
  • Marked feedback returned before the next session, not during it
  • A fortnightly note to the parent naming what moved and what did not

Single-paper repair

For the candidate whose grade sat one or two marks below a boundary on one component. Three to six sessions on that paper alone, with timed practice and a mark-scheme routine. This is the cheapest useful version of retake support and the one most providers will not quote, because it does not fill a term.

  • Scoped from the component grades on the statement of results
  • Timed questions in the session, not set as homework
  • Mark-scheme language drilled until the student uses it unprompted
  • Stops when the technique holds, not when the package runs out

Coursework review clinic

Where a repeated subject allows a new internal submission, the student plans it, researches it and writes it. The tutor questions the method, challenges the analysis and marks drafts against the published criteria, which is the whole of what an IB academic-honesty rule permits a tutor to do.

  • Criteria read letter by letter with the marks attached
  • Feedback written as questions the student answers themselves
  • Every draft stays in the student's own document and own words
  • A record of what was discussed, for the supervisor's authenticity statement

Gap-year holding pattern

A student waiting a full year for the next session has no school timetable holding the week together. One session a week per subject keeps the content alive at a fraction of the cost of an intensive block, then the hours rise in the final seventeen weeks when the entry is confirmed and the paper is dated.

  • One maintenance session a week per subject through the quiet months
  • Hours scale up on a date agreed in advance, not on a sales call
  • Work set for the weeks between, with deadlines that are actually checked
  • Lessons continue through travel, because delivery is online

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

The retake question is a calendar question first

  • Read the component grades, not just the subject grades
  • Separate the challenge decision from the repeat decision
  • Confirm who makes the entry before agreeing any teaching plan
  • Ask what the university will accept before assuming a repeat is required

Parents type IB resit tutor and IB retake tutor into Google in the same week every year, and the search is almost always made with a statement of results open in another tab. The useful answer is not a list of tutors. It is a sequence: read the result properly, decide whether to challenge a mark or repeat the component, pick the session, make the entry, then buy hours. Reversing that order is how families end up paying for twelve weeks of teaching towards a paper their child was never entered for.

The IB assesses twice a year. A candidate who sat in May can therefore aim at a session a few months later or at the same month a year on. Those two routes are not variations of one plan. The short route is an intensive block with no new content and a hard entry deadline. The long route is a year of maintenance, a university conversation about deferral, and a decision about whether the student is enrolled anywhere while it happens. The hours, the cost and the risks are different in each.

There is also a third route that gets forgotten: accept the grades and let a university condition be met another way. Not every disappointing result needs a repeat. A foundation year, a different course with a lower subject requirement, or a January start can be a better answer than seventeen weeks of revision, and an honest conversation about that is part of what the first call is for. A retake that nobody actually needed is still a retake that costs AED thousands and a year.

02

The ten days after results day, and what each one is for

The window between a results release and the point where options start closing is short, and most of it is spent waiting for other people. The decisions below do not run in parallel by accident: each one depends on the one above it, and the enquiry upon results decision has to be made before a retake entry commits the family to anything. A school that is closed for the summer break makes all of this slower, which is why the first call is usually to the IB coordinator rather than to a tutor.

The statement of results carries component-level information that a subject grade hides. A Chemistry 4 built from a strong Paper 2 and a weak internal mark is a different problem from a Chemistry 4 built from the reverse, and only one of them is fixable with paper practice. Families routinely buy tuition before anyone has read that breakdown. Thirty minutes with the coordinator saves more money than any discount a tutoring provider will offer.

An enquiry upon results is a request to the IB, made through the school, for a mark to be checked. It has a published window for each session, it carries a fee, and the outcome can go down as well as up. It is worth asking for when a component sits one or two marks under a boundary and the school agrees the mark looks wrong. It is not a substitute for a retake entry, and the retake entry deadline does not wait for the enquiry result.

03

What may be repeated, and what is carried forward

An IB Diploma retake is not usually a repeat of everything. The Diploma is assembled from six subject grades plus the core, and a second attempt at the IB Diploma is normally built by repeating the components that cost the award and leaving the rest as awarded. Which components may be left alone, and which have to be resubmitted because the syllabus or the prescribed titles have moved on, is a question for the coordinator at the point of entry. It is also the question that decides whether a family is buying six weeks of work or sixty.

The number of attempts available to a candidate is limited, and the limit is set in the IB's own assessment regulations rather than by the school. Any family planning a third attempt should read the current regulations with the coordinator before paying for teaching, because the answer is a rule and not a negotiation. The same document governs how carried-forward marks are handled and how long a candidate's registration remains live after the first attempt.

The table below is a planning aid, not a ruling. Treat each row as the question to put to the coordinator in the first conversation, with your child's session and subjects named. The reason to put it in writing is that internal marks are the part families forget: a student who spends a term on paper technique and then discovers that a carried-forward internal mark caps the subject at a 5 has lost the term to a single unasked question.

Seventeen weeks, counted backwards from the next paper

A single-subject repeat into the next session usually gives a UAE family about seventeen usable weeks once the summer break, the entry paperwork and the first fortnight of diagnosis are taken out. The plan below is written backwards from the first paper because that is the only fixed point in it. Everything else - how many sessions a week, when the first full past paper is sat, when the student stops learning content and starts practising under time - is derived from that date.

The shape matters more than the hour count. Weeks seventeen to fifteen are not teaching: they are reading the statement of results, mapping the syllabus against what the student can actually do unaided, and throwing out the two thirds of the course that was never the problem. Families find this uncomfortable, because paying for a session where nobody is taught anything feels wasteful. It is the opposite: it is what stops the remaining fourteen weeks from being a second complete course at twice the price.

The back end of the plan is equally deliberate. From week eight, every fortnight contains a full paper sat under exam timing, marked against the published scheme and returned before the next session. From week three the content work stops entirely and the sessions become technique: reading the question, allocating time across a paper, writing to the command term, and recognising the two or three question types that previously cost this particular student marks.

05

Why an entry deadline sits months before the paper

Every examination board closes entries long before it prints a paper, because papers, invigilation and centre allocation are planned around a candidate list. For a UAE retake the decision is really a choice between two series, and the gap between them is the whole calculation. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level in a June series and a November series; a grade that disappoints in August can go back in November, roughly ten weeks later, or wait until the following June, roughly ten months later. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE offers the same pair as May/June and November: its November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and grades from the previous November series reached students on 22 January 2026. Whichever series the student picks, the centre's entry cut-off sits weeks or months in front of the first paper, and it closes while the retake still feels like an open question.

Pearson Edexcel runs International GCSE exams in a May/June and a November series, and the published pattern is the same: the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also issues provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the live PDF on its own site is the version to work from rather than any figure restated on a tutoring page.

Cambridge adds one detail that catches UAE families specifically. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. For an IB November session retake the equivalent information - window, upload deadlines, entry cut-off - comes from the IB coordinator or ibo.org, and this page deliberately prints no IB date rather than an unverified one.

Where the marks were actually lost

  • Mathematics: recognising which method a question wants, not performing the method
  • Sciences: data-based questions and extended responses, once the internal mark is known
  • Economics and Business: evaluation written as argument rather than as a closing paragraph
  • English A: a repeatable routine for an unseen text under exam timing
  • History: source routine on Paper 1 and time control on the regional option
  • Across all of them: command terms, and writing to the marks available

Across the subjects UAE families repeat most, the pattern of lost marks is narrower than parents expect. Very few repeat candidates have failed to learn the syllabus. Most have learned it in a form that works in a classroom and breaks in an exam hall: topic by topic rather than in combination, with unlimited time, and without the specific vocabulary a mark scheme is looking for. That is a different problem from ignorance, and it responds to a different kind of session.

Mathematics is the clearest case. A student who can integrate when told to integrate, and who cannot see that a question requires integration, will fail Paper 1 and pass every homework. Sciences split differently: the internal investigation is already banked, so the repeat hinges on the data and extended-response questions. In the essay subjects, the loss is almost always structural - a conclusion written where evaluation was asked for, or sources described rather than used.

The diagnosis has to be done on the student's own work, under timing, in the first fortnight. A tutor who begins teaching in week one has skipped it. The output of that fortnight is short: a list of two or three question types, named, with the marks each one cost in the session that was sat. Everything after that is practice against the list, and the list is what the parent should be shown before any block of hours is agreed. If nobody can produce one, nobody has looked properly.

07

What a retake costs across the UAE market

Published rates for IB retake tuition in this market are wide, and the figures below are what each provider puts on its own site, read in October 2026. They are market rates rather than IB Gram prices. A university-student tutor online advertises from AED 45 an hour; a qualified subject tutor online from AED 150 to AED 300; an in-home visit, travel included, from AED 180 to AED 500; a specialist in an exam year from AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards; and a premium named tutor at AED 650.

Three things legitimately move a retake quote. The first is the level: a Higher Level paper with an extended-response component needs someone who has taught it, and that person is not interchangeable with a general maths tutor. The second is the shape of the work: a single-paper repair of five sessions costs a fraction of a seventeen-week block, and a provider who only quotes blocks is selling the block rather than the diagnosis. The third is timing, because the same tutor has fewer free hours in the eight weeks before a session than in the six months before it.

Two things should not move it. One is urgency - a quote that rises because results day was yesterday is pricing panic, not expertise. The other is a claimed outcome. No tutor can promise a grade, and a page that offers to sell one is telling you something about itself. For context on what families are already paying into education here, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package, so a tutoring budget this year is being set against a flat school fee rather than a rising one.

A visiting tutor against live online, with one session left

Families searching for retake help in the UAE often start by looking for someone who will come to the house, and the honest answer is that the market offers it, at a price, with a travel cost built in. IB Gram does not sell that in the Emirates. Home visits are a service we provide only in India; across the UAE every lesson is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. The comparison below is why we think that is the right model for a repeat candidate specifically, rather than a limitation we are dressing up.

A retake candidate needs a narrow specialist. Not a maths tutor, but someone who has taught Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and marked Paper 3 answers. Inside a twenty-minute drive of any given villa, the number of people who fit that description is close to zero in Dubai and actually zero in Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain. Online IB retake lessons change the question from who lives nearby to who is free at 7pm Gulf Standard Time, and that is a far better pool to choose from when a single component has to move.

The practical details favour online too, in this situation. A retake block runs through a summer in which many UAE families travel, and a schedule that survives three weeks in London or Kochi is worth more than one that pauses. Marked work can be returned as annotated files rather than as a verbal comment at the door. Sessions can be recorded for the student's own revision. And the travel time that a visiting tutor charges for, roughly 30 to 60 minutes a session in city traffic, goes back into teaching instead.

Coursework on a second attempt, and the line a tutor holds

Where a repeated subject permits a new internal submission, the honesty question arrives immediately, and the UAE market does contain people who will answer it badly. One provider researched for this project advertises finished Internal Assessments for a fee. A family who buys one is buying an academic-malpractice investigation for their child, and the IB's own rules make the consequence an expulsion risk, not a telling-off. No part of IB Gram's service touches that.

What a tutor is allowed to do is substantial, and worth being precise about. A tutor may explain the criteria, read a draft and mark it against the published descriptors, ask why a method was chosen, point at an argument that does not follow, and refuse to accept a conclusion the data does not support. The student plans the piece, gathers the evidence and writes every word that is submitted. Feedback is given as questions the student answers in their own document, which also keeps the supervisor's authenticity statement truthful.

The second honesty question concerns material. Past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson, and this page links to them rather than reproducing or supplying them. A tutor who offers a private library of mark schemes is handing a family a copyright problem. The table below is a planning reference for the components a repeat candidate most often has to resubmit, and the length limits are the published ones to check against your child's current subject guide.

Universities, equivalency and the months in between

A retake decision is really two decisions, and the second one belongs to a university admissions office. Before a single hour is bought, someone should ask the institution directly whether it will hold the place, defer the start, accept a later certificate, or has already released the offer. Admissions teams answer that question quickly and in writing, and the answer frequently changes the plan: a deferred start removes the urgency entirely, while a released offer may turn a repeat into a reapplication with a different deadline.

For study inside the UAE, the Ministry of Education's equivalency process sits behind admission, and it is one of the least-covered topics in this market. The published clarification for the British track requires five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and it states that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One ranking competitor publishes six as the subject count; the sourced figure is five.

For the American track the same clarification sets English proficiency at a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, with at least 450 in SAT Mathematics for the mathematics requirement. It states no IB points threshold, so no IB equivalency figure appears on this page. Equivalency is a process the family completes with the ministry and the attestation desk in their emirate; IB Gram describes it and points to the official channel, and nothing about tutoring is required for it.

Ramadan, the summer gap and the weeks a retake plan quietly loses

  • Move sessions after Iftar through Ramadan rather than losing the month
  • Make the entry before the summer travel, not after it
  • Keep one weekly session running through August to hold the content
  • Count the mandatory-subject hours into the week before promising three sessions a subject

A seventeen-week block drawn on paper assumes seventeen usable weeks, and the UAE calendar does not provide them. Ramadan shortens school days and moves the whole family's working hours; most students here study better after Iftar than at 5pm, and a tutor who cannot move a slot to 9pm loses a month of productive sessions. Eid removes a week on each side in practice. The National Day break lands in early December, which is exactly where a November-session candidate would otherwise be starting their next plan.

The summer is the bigger trap for a repeat candidate specifically, because the gap between a July results release and an autumn preparation block falls straight into it. Families travel for six weeks, the school is closed, and the coordinator who has to make the entry is unreachable. The practical answer is to do the paperwork before anyone flies and to keep one weekly online session running through the travel, which is possible precisely because nobody has to arrive anywhere.

The mandatory UAE subjects take real timetable space in any repeat year, and no competitor page mentions them. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are required in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements had to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject time on a 40-minute lesson unit, advises at least 25 minutes for any such lesson, requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combined classes for the two groups. A student repeating subjects while still enrolled is carrying that load alongside the retake plan.

Where we tutor

Where retake candidates sit, emirate by emirate

A retake entry is made through a school or an examination centre, and both the regulator and the centre options change with the emirate. Families searching for a retake tutor in Dubai and families searching for a retake tutor in Abu Dhabi are working inside two different regulatory systems, and the northern emirates sit inside a third.

Dubai

Regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which oversees the quality of private education in the emirate. The widest choice of IB schools and examination centres in the country, and the shortest list of excuses for a school that will not discuss a second-attempt entry.

Abu Dhabi

Regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for school staff bar paid private tutoring of a teacher's own enrolled students, which matters when a family is offered evening help by the school.

Al Ain

Also under the Department of Education and Knowledge. Fewer IB Diploma centres than the capital, so a repeat candidate may be travelling to Abu Dhabi for papers while studying with a tutor online. Worth confirming the centre before the entry is made rather than after.

Sharjah

Regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Curriculum and fee approval sitting with the emirate regulator means a school's willingness to enter a second-attempt candidate is a local question.

Ajman

Private schools here fall under the federal Ministry of Education, which supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Diploma provision is limited, so retake candidates often work with a school in Dubai or Sharjah for the entry itself.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, like Sharjah, approves curricula and assessment methods. Distance from the main examination centres makes the exam-fortnight logistics part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Fujairah

Under the federal Ministry of Education. The east coast is the part of the country every competitor page ignores, and it is where online delivery matters most: a Higher Level specialist is a scheduling question rather than a driving question.

Umm Al Quwain

Also supervised by the Ministry of Education. The smallest private-school market in the country, which means a repeat candidate here will almost certainly be taught by someone who is not within reach of the house, whatever the delivery model promises.

Dubai IB World Schools

Students we support sit the Diploma at schools across the emirate, and the practical differences between them show up in a retake conversation: whether the school registers second-attempt candidates, how early internal coursework deadlines fall, and whether the IB coordinator will keep supervising a candidate who has already left.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Capital-region Diploma candidates face a shorter list of centres and the ADEK ethics rules on staff tutoring, so families here more often need a tutor with no connection to the school. That is a straightforward match online and a difficult one by postcode.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the statement of results, not a summary

The first thing we ask for is the component breakdown, the subjects and levels, the session sat and the deadline the family is working to. A screenshot is fine. Without it any plan is guesswork, and guesswork in a retake year is what turns a five-session repair into a term of teaching nobody needed.

  2. 02

One free trial lesson on the paper that went wrong

A sixty-minute live session with a subject specialist, spent on the component that cost the grade rather than on introductions. No card details are taken and nothing is owed if the family stops there. What comes out of it is a short written view of what is actually missing, which the parent gets whether they continue or not.

  3. 03

A dated plan counted back from the entry deadline

Hours a week, which papers get sat under timing and when, what is marked between sessions, and the date by which the entry has to be registered. The plan names your child's session and deadline as confirmed by the school, because our page will not print an IB date we have not seen verified.

  4. 04

Weekly one-to-one, with work marked between sessions

Lessons run over live video in Gulf Standard Time, usually in the evening. Work set between sessions comes back marked against the published criteria before the next lesson, not during it, so the session itself is spent on what the marking found rather than on reading it together.

  5. 05

A review at the halfway point, and a switch if the fit is wrong

Halfway through a block the parent gets a written note on what has moved, what has not, and whether the hours should go up, down or elsewhere. If the match is wrong, the tutor changes and the plan carries over. A retake timetable is too short to spend four weeks hoping a mismatch resolves itself.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The diagnosis comes before the hours

The first fortnight produces a named list of two or three question types that cost marks in the session already sat. Everything after that is practice against the list. Parents see the list before agreeing a block, which is the only honest way to say how many hours a repeat actually needs.

Matched by paper, not by subject

A Higher Level extended-response paper and a Standard Level calculator paper are different teaching jobs. We match on the component, so a student repeating Analysis and Approaches Paper 3 works with somebody who has taught and marked that paper rather than with a general mathematics tutor.

Online because the clock is the constraint

Across the UAE we deliver one-to-one over live video and we do not send tutors to addresses in the Emirates; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For a retake candidate that trade is favourable: the specialist pool is national rather than local, and the schedule survives the summer travel that every repeat plan runs into.

Figures you can check against published sources

Every AED band on this page is attributed to the provider that published it and dated to the month it was read. Every regulatory statement links to u.ae, KHDA, MoHRE or the examination board. Nothing is presented as our own statistic, because a number without a source is not a reason to trust anyone.

The honesty line is written down, not implied

Tutors explain criteria, mark drafts and challenge arguments. They do not produce assessed work, supply mark schemes or edit a submission into shape. This is stated here so a family can hold us to it, and so the contrast with providers selling finished coursework in this market is explicit rather than hinted at.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

My daughter missed the Diploma by two points. Is repeating one subject enough?+

Often it is, but the statement of results decides it rather than the points gap. Two points can sit inside one subject, or they can be tangled up with a failing condition in the core that a subject repeat will not touch. Ask the coordinator which condition was not met and which component in that subject lost the marks. If a single paper is two or three marks under a boundary, a short block aimed at that paper is the cheapest route. If the gap is spread across three subjects, a one-subject entry will not recover the award.

How soon after results day does a retake entry have to be registered?+

Earlier than most families expect, and the exact date comes from your child's school rather than from a page like this. In the UAE the retake choice is November or the following June, and both close entries well ahead of the papers: a November sitting is only about ten weeks after August results, so the centre's cut-off for it can fall within a few weeks of the grade that prompted the retake. Pearson Edexcel publishes its own cut-off per series on the exam-timetable pages, and its November 2026 papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026. For an IB session, ask the coordinator for the entry cut-off in writing in the first week after results. Buying tuition before that date is confirmed is the most common sequencing error in a retake year.

Does a repeated grade replace the first one on the certificate?+

How attempts appear on IB documentation is set in the IB's own assessment regulations, and your coordinator holds the current version. Rather than taking a number from a tutoring site, ask them two things directly: what the certificate will show after a second attempt, and what universities you are applying to will see. Admissions offices differ in how they treat a later sitting, and some ask about it at interview. Getting both answers in writing before the entry is made costs an email and removes the only part of this process that families tend to discover too late.

How many times can an IB subject be repeated?+

The number of attempts available to a candidate is limited by the IB's assessment regulations, not by the school's willingness or by what a tutor will sell. Read the current regulations with the coordinator before planning a third sitting, because the answer is a rule rather than a negotiation, and it also governs how long a registration stays live after the first attempt. Any provider happy to quote for an unlimited series of attempts without asking which attempt this is has not read the document that decides whether the plan is even possible.

We are four months from the next session. Can two Higher Levels realistically be repeated?+

Two Higher Levels in roughly seventeen weeks is possible for a student whose problem is technique and unrealistic for one whose problem is content. The test is the first fortnight: if the diagnosis produces a short list of question types in each subject, two subjects fit at three hours a week each. If it finds whole topics never understood, one subject in this session and the second in the next one will produce a better outcome than a rushed pair. The honest version of that conversation happens before the block is sold, not in week nine.

Will a retake tutor work from the statement of results, or does my son need re-testing?+

Both, in that order. The statement of results gives the component grades, which narrows the search immediately and costs nothing. A diagnostic session then tests whether the student can produce that work unaided and under time, which the certificate cannot show. The output is a written list of the specific question types that lost marks. Expect to see that list before agreeing a block of hours; a provider who proposes a package before anyone has looked at a component breakdown is selling a timetable rather than a repair.

What does retake tuition cost per hour in the UAE, and who publishes those figures?+

Rates read on UAE provider sites in October 2026 run from AED 45 an hour for a university-student tutor online, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for a visiting tutor with travel included, AED 200 to 450 and upwards for an exam-year specialist, and AED 650 at the premium end. EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, Bestimate, TutorChase and BartyED publish those bands on their own pages. They are market figures, not IB Gram prices; ours are quoted after a free trial lesson, against the plan your child needs.

Who registers the entry if my son has already left his school?+

A school that still holds the registration is usually the simplest route, and many UAE schools will keep supervising a former candidate for one further session if asked early. Where that is refused, an examination centre entry is the alternative, and an IB private candidate entry has conditions attached that differ by component - coursework supervision in particular. Ask the coordinator first, in the week results arrive, and ask the centre second. Settle this before buying hours, because teaching towards a paper nobody has entered a student for is the one wasted cost in this process.

Does a retake change what the Ministry of Education needs for equivalency?+

The requirement attaches to the certificate, not to how many attempts produced it. For the British track, the published clarification asks for five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, and states that Arabic and Islamic education are not among the five. No IB points threshold appears in that source, so verify the IB requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation desk in your emirate before planning around any figure you read elsewhere.

Can the Extended Essay mark stay as it is while one subject is repeated?+

Usually yes - the Extended Essay is its own component and is normally carried forward unless a new essay is entered. The practical question is whether the carried mark still lets the award arithmetic work, because the core contributes points alongside Theory of Knowledge. Put it to the coordinator as a calculation rather than as a yes-or-no question: with this essay grade carried and this subject lifted by one grade, does the Diploma come out? If the answer is no, the plan needs a second component, and better to know in week one.

How do lessons fit around Ramadan when the preparation block runs through it?+

Sessions move rather than pause. Most students here work better after Iftar than in the late afternoon, so slots shift to roughly 9pm or later for the month and the weekly count usually stays the same. The weeks around Eid are better treated as holiday in the plan than as sessions nobody attends. Because every lesson is delivered over live video, moving a slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation with someone who was going to drive across the city at 5pm.

My son is on a gap year with no timetable. What should his week look like?+

One maintenance session a week per subject through the quiet months, with work set between sessions and actually checked, then a rise to two or three sessions in the final seventeen weeks once the entry is confirmed. The failure mode in a gap year is not intensity, it is drift: three months pass, the content fades, and the block that was meant to be revision becomes re-teaching at a higher cost. A fixed weekly slot and a dated plan is what prevents that, and it is cheaper than the alternative.

Is an examiner-led tutor worth two or three times the hourly rate for a repeat?+

Sometimes, and the question to ask is what specifically is being bought. Current examiner status cannot be assumed from a profile line, and examiner experience does not give anyone access to marking, boundaries or unreleased papers - anybody suggesting otherwise is describing something that does not exist. What a genuinely experienced marker brings is accurate judgement about where a script loses marks. At AED 500 or more an hour that is worth paying for on a component that is one or two marks short, and poor value for re-teaching a topic.

Can a tutor help with a resubmitted internal assessment without breaking the rules?+

Yes, within clear limits. A tutor may explain the assessment criteria letter by letter, mark a draft against the published descriptors, ask why a method was chosen, and refuse to accept a conclusion the evidence does not support. The student plans the piece, gathers the data and writes every word that is submitted, in their own document. Anyone offering a finished piece for a fee is selling your child a malpractice investigation - one provider in this market advertises exactly that. The supervisor also signs an authenticity statement, which should be true.

Nobody is listed for Physics Higher Level in our evening slot. What happens then?+

We say so rather than substituting someone who nearly fits. Where no UAE-hours specialist is free for a specific Higher Level component, the options we put to a family are a different time slot, a short wait for a named tutor's availability, or a specialist based in India teaching into the Gulf Standard Time evening, which is how most of our Higher Level matches already run. If none of those works for your child's deadline, that is worth hearing in the first week rather than discovering in week six.

Should we pay for a remark before paying for preparation?+

Where a component sits one or two marks under a boundary and the school agrees the mark looks inconsistent, an enquiry upon results is worth requesting - it runs through the school, carries a fee, and the mark can move down as well as up. It is not an alternative to an entry, because the entry deadline does not wait for the outcome. The practical sequence is to lodge the enquiry, make the entry anyway, and start the diagnosis. Withdrawing an entry is easier than discovering the window closed while you waited.

Is my child's own school teacher allowed to tutor the repeat privately?+

In Abu Dhabi, no. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Teachers tutoring outside school hours need that permit, which is granted free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. Verify the current wording with ADEK before relying on it, and treat an offer of this kind with caution.

Start with the date, then the diagnosis, then the hours

If your child's results came in below what a place depended on, the next three phone calls matter more than the next three tutoring quotes. Call the IB coordinator for the component breakdown and the entry deadline. Call the university and ask in writing what it will accept. Then send us the statement of results and take a free trial lesson on the paper that actually went wrong - no card details, nothing owed if you stop there. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, anywhere from Dubai Marina to Fujairah, and the plan you get back is dated backwards from the paper rather than priced forwards from a package.
