IGCSE Past Papers Practice in the UAE

IGCSE past papers practice in the UAE works backwards from one date: the morning of the first paper. This page counts the weeks back from that morning — which papers belong in which week, which variant digit to download, how a mark scheme is actually read, and which deadlines close months before any revision matters. Lessons are delivered live online, one-to-one, across every emirate, timed around a UAE school day and the shortened Ramadan timetable.

  • Lessons run live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time
  • We never sell past papers or mark schemes; the boards publish both free
  • Planning starts from the statement of entry, not a subject list
  • Coursework stays the student's own words; a tutor marks and questions

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

A past paper is a measuring instrument, and most families reach for it too late

A past paper sat cold, under the real duration, and marked against the published mark scheme tells you three things: what your child can retrieve with no prompt on the desk, how fast they work when the clock is running, and whether they read command words the way the examiner wrote them. It does not teach anything. That is the part families get wrong. IGCSE past papers practice in the UAE is usually booked for the last fortnight before the first paper, which is the one point in the two-year course when a measurement can no longer change the plan.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. A Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Paper 4 runs two hours and thirty minutes. Marking it honestly, question by question, against the mark scheme takes another hour. Re-teaching the four or five topics the script exposed takes two more. One paper is therefore five or six hours of real work, and a Year 11 student sitting nine subjects has somewhere between twenty and thirty papers worth sitting. Counted backwards from a June morning, that work has to start in the autumn term, not in April.

What a UAE family is up against is not a shortage of material. Cambridge International and Pearson publish past question papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, specifications and grade thresholds on their own websites at no charge. The shortage is structure: knowing which paper belongs in week twenty-six and which belongs in the final ten days, which variant digit the exam centre actually sits, and what to do with a script once it has been marked. Nobody ranking for this search publishes that schedule, so this page does.

There is a second calendar running underneath the first. A Dubai school answers to KHDA, an Abu Dhabi or Al Ain school to ADEK, a Sharjah school to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, a Ras Al Khaimah school to the Department of Knowledge, and schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah to the federal Ministry of Education. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in Dubai private schools whatever curriculum the school is licensed for, so they occupy timetable hours a revision plan has to work around. Ramadan shortens the school day and moves the evening. A past-paper block written without those facts in it collapses in its third week.

Everything below is delivered as one-to-one online tuition. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an address anywhere in the UAE; a lesson is a live video session with a shared screen, an annotated script and a camera on the written working. For paper practice that is an advantage rather than a compromise, because the script is the thing being examined, and a Fujairah family gets a Cambridge Physics 0625 specialist instead of whoever lives within a thirty-minute drive.

Three routes produce the papers UAE families practise with. Two are IGCSE boards whose component structures differ enough to change a revision plan; the third is the Diploma Programme that many of these students move into eighteen months later, where paper practice continues under different rules.

Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge syllabuses carry four-digit codes — 0580 Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry, 0610 Biology, 0500 First Language English — and most split into Core and Extended tiers with separate papers. Components are numbered: Paper 1 and Paper 2 are usually multiple choice, Paper 3 and Paper 4 structured theory, Paper 5 a practical test and Paper 6 the written alternative to practical. The number after the oblique is the variant.

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after reading the wrong one. Two UAE schools a few kilometres apart can therefore sit the same paper at different hours.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Pearson codes begin with a digit — 4MA1 Mathematics A, 4PM1 Further Pure Mathematics, 4PH1 Physics, 4CH1 Chemistry, 4BI1 Biology, 4EA1 English Language A, 4CP0 Computer Science. Several subjects sit two papers of equal weight rather than a tiered pair, and some are available across more than one series, which changes when a script is worth marking. Practical skills are assessed inside the written papers rather than in a laboratory component.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams run in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables well ahead of a series, so a UAE revision plan should be rebuilt against the final timetable when it appears rather than the provisional one.

IB Diploma Programme

Students who finish IGCSEs at a UAE IB World School move into the Diploma Programme, where past-paper work changes shape: papers carry a smaller share of the grade because the Internal Assessment is marked internally and moderated externally, and Paper 3 appears in several Higher Level sciences. The habit built on IGCSE scripts — timed, marked, re-taught — transfers directly, which is the strongest argument for building it in Year 10.

International Baccalaureate 7% of enrolment in Dubai's private schools in 2024-25, and Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them on an IB curriculum. We do not publish IB session or results dates on this page: ibo.org blocks automated checking, so any IB date here would be unverified. Ask your school's IB coordinator, or read the assessment pages on ibo.org directly, before a date goes in your diary.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Papers behave differently by subject, and so does the marking. These are the IGCSE subjects UAE families most often bring to paper practice, with the component that usually decides the grade and the place marks go missing.

Mathematics (0580 · 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Pearson Mathematics A

Extended sits Paper 2 and Paper 4; Core sits Paper 1 and Paper 3. Method marks are awarded separately from answer marks, so a script with no working loses marks a correct answer would have earned. The commonest avoidable loss is premature rounding carried through a multi-step question.

Additional and Further Pure Mathematics (0606 · 4PM1)

One tier only

Taken alongside Mathematics by students heading for Higher Level Analysis and Approaches or A-Level Maths. The algebra is heavier and the questions are longer, so timing is the usual failure before content is. A first timed paper here is diagnostic in a way topic sheets never are.

Physics (0625 · 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Cambridge Physics ends in either Paper 5, a practical test in a laboratory, or Paper 6, the written alternative to practical paper. Paper 6 is fully practisable over video: it asks for tables, graphs, precautions and sources of error rather than apparatus handling. Electricity and moments are where Extended scripts bleed marks.

Chemistry (0620 · 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and organic reaction pathways carry most of the Extended marks that move a grade. Mark schemes accept equivalent wording but insist on the reagent, the condition and the observation together, so a half-answer scores nothing. Practising with the mark scheme beside the script fixes that faster than re-reading notes.

Biology (0610 · 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Biology scripts lose marks to command words more than to content. Describe, explain, suggest and compare each demand a different shape of answer, and a well-informed paragraph answering the wrong command earns nothing. Counting command-word errors separately from content errors is the single most useful marking habit in this subject.

Co-ordinated Sciences, Double Award (0654)

Core and Extended

Two IGCSE grades from one course, which makes paper practice awkward: three disciplines share each paper, so a weak unit in one science hides inside an average total. Marking by discipline rather than by paper is the only way to see which third of the syllabus is costing the grade.

First Language English and English Language A (0500 · 4EA1)

One tier · coursework or exam routes

Reading questions reward selection and precision, not volume; the directed writing task rewards register and audience. Past papers are most useful here when the mark scheme's level descriptors are read first and the script is placed against a level rather than given a number out of fifty.

English as a Second Language (0510 · 0511)

Oral endorsement or speaking test

The written components practise cleanly on past papers; the speaking component does not, because it is conducted and recorded at the school. A plan that treats every component as practisable over video will overstate how ready a candidate is, so the speaking mark has to be chased with the school.

Economics and Business Studies (0455 · 0450 · 4EC1 · 4BS1)

One tier

Extended-response marks depend on evaluation, which is the last skill to arrive and the first to be missed in self-marking. A student reliably scores their own analysis as evaluation. Having the two separated by someone else, with the mark scheme's wording quoted back, is where the grade moves.

Computer Science (0478 · 4CP0)

One tier · on-screen or written practical

Pearson's 4CP0 includes an on-screen programming paper, which changes practice entirely: the environment matters as much as the algorithm. Cambridge 0478 assesses programming on paper. Knowing which of the two your child is entered for decides whether a session needs a shared editor or a scanned script.

Geography and History (0460 · 0470 · 4GE1 · 4HI1)

One tier · some coursework routes

Source and skills questions are the most teachable marks in either subject and the most neglected in revision, because they feel like reading rather than learning. Past papers that are marked for source handling alone, ignoring content, usually move a grade faster than another round of case-study notes.

Arabic as a first and as a foreign language

Both routes offered

Arabic is compulsory in Dubai private schools whatever curriculum the school is licensed for, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Paper practice has to follow the stream the student is actually registered in, not the one the family assumes.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Paper practice is bought in three shapes, and the right one depends entirely on how many weeks are left. Thirty weeks out, the measurement matters most. Five weeks out, the turnaround on marking matters most. All three run as live one-to-one video sessions.

Diagnostic paper, marked and returned

A single component sat cold at home under the real duration, photographed or scanned, then marked against the published mark scheme and returned with a per-question breakdown. The session that follows is spent on the breakdown, not on the paper. This is the right first purchase for any family more than fifteen weeks out, because it replaces a guess about the weak topics with a list of them.

  • One component, real duration, no notes and no phone on the desk
  • Marked against the board's published mark scheme, not a tutor's impression
  • Returned with marks attributed per question and per command word
  • The score is shared with you; whether the student sees it is your call

Weekly one-to-one with a paper closing each block

The standard shape for the long stretch: weekly teaching on the topics the last script exposed, with a timed paper at the end of every three or four weeks to re-measure. The paper is the audit, the weeks in between are the work. Most UAE exam-year families run one hour a week per subject here and add a second hour in the final ten weeks.

  • Topic-sliced questions pulled across several series for the teaching weeks
  • A full timed component at the close of each block, alternating variants
  • A written note after each marked script, so the plan is visible to you
  • Session times set on Gulf Standard Time around the school day

Paper-first session: sat before, walked through during

Inside the final six weeks the useful unit changes. The student sits the paper on their own time, the tutor marks it before the session, and the whole session is spent rerunning the five worst answers aloud with the mark scheme on screen. It is the highest-value hour available late in the course, and the one most families book too late to use more than twice.

  • Script submitted at least a day before so marking is done first
  • Session spent on the worst five answers, not the whole paper
  • Command-word errors tallied separately from content gaps
  • Reruns done aloud, because the misreading usually surfaces in speech

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What a past paper measures, and what it will never teach

  • Real duration, no notes, no phone: anything else measures something different
  • Marked against the board's own scheme, not against a general impression
  • Method marks and answer marks counted separately, as the scheme counts them
  • Command-word errors logged apart from content gaps, because the fix differs

A past paper measures three things and teaches none of them: what your child can retrieve with nothing on the desk, how fast they work with a clock running, and whether they read command words the way the examiner wrote them. Everything else a family hopes a paper will do — build confidence, cover the syllabus, replace revision — it does not do. Treating a timed past paper under exam conditions as a teaching tool is the most common wasted hour in UAE IGCSE preparation, and it is wasted at every price point in the market.

The second mistake is sending a paper home as homework. Untimed, with notes open and a phone within reach, a script tells you what your child can look up. That is a different measurement from the one the exam takes, and it reads high. A paper sat under real conditions, on the real paper duration, with no interruption, will usually come back eight to fifteen marks below the open-book version — and that gap is the actual information. Families who skip the conditions get a number that feels reassuring and predicts nothing.

The third is leaving the script unmarked, or marked only for right and wrong. A Cambridge mark scheme does not award right and wrong. It awards method marks and answer marks separately, accepts equivalent wording, carries errors forward in some sequences, and specifies which observation or condition must appear before credit is given. A script marked without the scheme beside it loses most of its diagnostic value, because the interesting information is not the total — it is which of the available marks were reachable and were not reached.

02

The digits after the oblique: variant, tier and the wrong download

Open a Cambridge paper and the file is named something like 0625/42. The first four digits are the syllabus — Physics. The next identifies the component and its variant. Paper 4 is the Extended structured theory paper; the trailing digit says which version of it a particular group of centres sat. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a separate timetable for each, stating that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after reading the wrong one.

For a family this has one practical consequence. Before any paper is downloaded, read the statement of entry the school issues. It lists the syllabus codes, the components and the tier your child is entered for. A Year 11 student who has spent three Saturdays on Core Paper 3 when the entry says Extended Paper 4 has practised a paper with a different mark ceiling, different question styles and a different grade range. That mistake is common, costs weeks, and is prevented by one document nobody asks for.

Once the entry is confirmed, variants are a resource rather than a risk. If your child's centre sits variant 2 of a component, the variant 1 and variant 3 papers from the same series are additional, unseen, perfectly matched practice at the identical tier and standard. Working through all three variants across several series is how a student gets twenty genuinely unseen papers out of a syllabus instead of six. The tier, not the variant, is the thing that must match.

Counting the weeks backwards from the first exam morning

Work from the date of the first paper and count back. A June series means roughly thirty-two usable weeks from the start of the autumn term, minus the winter break, minus the mock fortnight, minus Ramadan's shortened days, minus the week nobody works after Eid. What is left is around twenty-four weeks of real teaching, and the papers have to be distributed across them deliberately. Doing them in a block at the end is how a student arrives at the exam having measured themselves four times, all in the last fortnight, with no time left to act.

Early papers exist to find gaps, so they should be sat before the syllabus is finished and read as a map rather than a score. Middle papers exist to confirm that the re-teaching worked, so they should alternate variants and be marked with a per-question breakdown. Late papers exist to rehearse conditions and pace, so they must be sat at the real duration at the real time of day where that is possible. Three different jobs, three different ways of marking, one calendar.

The final ten days are where the most damage is done. A full paper the day before an exam costs sleep, produces a number nobody can act on, and reliably lowers the result. What belongs there is a short, loud rerun of the five worst answers from the previous script, with the mark scheme on screen. The table below is the version of this plan we work to with UAE families; shift every row four weeks earlier for a school that runs January mocks early, as Abu Dhabi secondaries often do.

The deadlines that close months before any revision matters

Parents discover the exam calendar in the wrong order. The date they know is the exam. The dates that actually constrain decisions are the Cambridge final entry deadline and the school's forecast-grade submission, both of which fall long before the paper and both of which are decided from evidence. A tier choice between Core and Extended, a decision to drop a subject, a decision to add one: all of these are closed off by the entry deadline, and an entry deadline is the last point at which a marked script can change anything structural.

The clearest worked example in the public record for a UAE candidate comes from Pearson, because Pearson publishes dates for a series an Emirates student can actually sit. Its November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. For the equivalent November 2025 series, results reached students on 22 January 2026. Its June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. Read in order, those dates say something simple: the last paper and the grade that follows it are separated by roughly two months, and the entry that put the student in the room was lodged months before the first paper. Cambridge's two UAE series sit on the same frame — entries in the spring for a June sitting, with November standing as the resit route if a June grade comes in short of what a sixth form asked for. The exact entry deadline is the one your centre prints on the statement of entry, and it is the only one worth planning against.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sits on a different rhythm. Exams run in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the one rule that matters is to plan against the final timetable when it is published and to treat the provisional version as a sketch.

Reading an IGCSE mark scheme the way the examiner wrote it

  • Method and answer marks are separate: working earns credit the answer alone does not
  • Error carried forward keeps later marks alive after one early slip
  • Reagent, condition and observation together, or the mark is not awarded
  • Any-two-from instructions mean extra points add nothing but cost time
  • Command words are published in the syllabus and are recoverable marks

A mark scheme is a technical document and it rewards being read literally. In mathematics schemes, method marks and answer marks are listed separately, which is why a script showing no working can lose marks that a wrong answer with full working would have kept. Equivalent wording is usually accepted, and the scheme often says so in shorthand. Sequences of dependent calculation frequently allow an error to be carried forward, so one early slip does not wipe out the marks that follow it.

In the sciences the scheme is stricter about what has to appear together. A credit for a reaction may require the reagent, the condition and the observation in the same answer; two of the three scores nothing. Schemes commonly accept a reversed argument where the logic is symmetrical, and commonly list several acceptable points with an instruction to award any two. A student who writes six points and expects six marks has misread the instruction, not the chemistry.

Command words are published in the syllabus, and they are the cheapest marks in the paper to recover. State wants a fact with no reasoning. Describe wants what happens. Explain wants why, in causal steps. Suggest invites an applied answer the student has not been taught verbatim. Calculate wants the figure with working and units. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence. Marking a script for command-word compliance alone, ignoring content entirely, is the fastest single intervention available in the last month of a course.

06

Marking your child's own paper without inflating the score

  • Two colours, two markers, one script: the gap between the totals is the lesson
  • Quote the scheme's own wording next to every self-awarded mark
  • Questions where both markers agree need no session time
  • A two-mark discrepancy or more is a topic, not an argument

Self-marking is worth doing and almost always done wrong. A student marking their own script reads their intention rather than their words, awards the mark they meant to earn, and finishes four to nine marks high. That inflation is not dishonesty; it is the ordinary difficulty of reading your own writing as a stranger would. The fix is not to stop self-marking — it is to mark twice and compare, because the difference between the two marks is a better diagnostic than either number.

The method that works with UAE families is simple enough to run at a kitchen table. The student marks the script in one colour with the scheme open, writing the scheme's own wording next to any mark they award themselves. A second marker — a tutor, in our case — marks the same script independently in another colour. The two totals are then set side by side, question by question. Every question where the gap is two marks or more is the lesson. The questions where both marks agree need no session time at all.

This also solves a problem schools cannot solve. A class teacher in a nine-set Dubai secondary marks a mock for the cohort, not for one candidate, and the feedback a family receives is a grade and a comment. In an Al Ain or Fujairah school with a single set, there may be no second marker in the building. Independent marking is not a criticism of the school; it is the second opinion a one-set subject structurally cannot produce.

07

Where the papers come from, and why nobody should sell you one

Past question papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, specifications, specimen materials and grade thresholds are published by Cambridge International and by Pearson on their own websites, free, for released series. Any provider charging a UAE family for access to those documents is charging for something the board already gives away, and reproducing or redistributing them is copyright infringement. A reasonable test of a tutoring provider is to ask whether past papers are included in the package: a provider who says the boards publish them free and points you to the page is telling you the truth about a small thing.

What is legitimately chargeable is the work around the paper: independent marking against the scheme, the diagnostic breakdown, the re-teaching, and the plan. That is also where the value is, because the document itself is inert. A family with a full archive of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 papers and no marking has a stack of paper; a family with four marked scripts and a list of six recurring errors has a revision plan.

Grade thresholds need a specific warning. Cambridge publishes threshold tables per series, and they move every series, because they are set after the papers are marked. A mark that reached a grade 7 in one June does not reliably reach it in the next. Using an old threshold as a target rather than as context is one of the quieter ways a confident student is caught out, and it is why we quote marks and components to parents rather than predicted grades.

What a past paper cannot tell you about your child

  • Paper 5 practical skills need the school's laboratory, not a video call
  • Speaking and oral marks depend on a recording the school makes
  • Coursework is taught, questioned and reviewed — never produced for the student
  • The alternative to practical paper is the one practical component video handles fully

Some marks are not reachable from a script, and a plan that ignores them overstates how ready a candidate is. Cambridge Paper 5 in the sciences is a practical test conducted in a laboratory; the written alternative to practical paper exists precisely because not every centre runs it. If your child is entered for Paper 5, the apparatus handling is the school's to deliver and no amount of online paper work substitutes for bench time. The mark scheme still helps, because it tells you what the examiner was looking for, but the skill is physical.

Speaking and oral components behave the same way. English as a Second Language carries an oral endorsement or a speaking test conducted and recorded at the school; modern-language speaking is the same. These can be rehearsed, but the mark is awarded on a recording the school makes, so the plan needs the school's dates in it. A family who discovers the speaking window a week before it closes has lost a component's worth of preparation to a diary gap.

Coursework routes, where a subject offers them, are bound by a different rule entirely. The work must be the student's own. A tutor may teach the skills, question the argument, point at a criterion and say that the evidence does not yet meet it, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not produce, rewrite or finish the piece. Providers in this market do sell finished coursework; that is a malpractice trigger for the candidate, and it is not a service we offer at any price.

A revision plan built only from board dates will break in the UAE, because two other calendars overlap it. The first is Ramadan, which shortens the school day and moves family evenings; the sensible response is to halve the number of timed papers in those weeks and move the remaining ones to a post-Iftar slot or a weekend morning, rather than to pretend the week is normal. The second is the mandatory-subject requirement, which occupies timetable hours that a family often assumes are available for revision.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic must hold the appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects.

Two further details change how a session should be built. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time in 40-minute lesson units, advising that any mandatory lesson should run at least 25 minutes — which is why a child used to 40-minute school periods often struggles with a 90-minute tutorial, and why a 60-minute session with a 10-minute break works better than an unbroken hour. And for the mandatory subjects, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited, so support in those subjects follows the school's own material rather than an alternative scheme.

What the UAE market charges for an hour of paper marking

Three of the six best-ranking pages for these queries publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars — a currency no UAE family transacts in. The figures below are market rates gathered from providers' own published pages and from a 2026 Dubai rate table, each attributed to whoever published it. They are not IB Gram prices. Our own model starts with a free trial lesson, one lesson, with no card required, and a consultation in which the plan and the hours are quoted for your child's actual entry.

Read the table with one question in mind: what does the hour include? A budget online hour is live teaching, and marking between sessions is rarely part of it. A specialist hour at the upper end usually includes the marked script and a written breakdown, which is most of the value in paper practice. A visiting tutor's hour at a family address carries travel inside it, which is why in-home rates in this market run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500. IB Gram does not deliver that format in the UAE at all; sessions are live online and one-to-one.

Monthly shapes seen in this market: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits at an address. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. For context, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27 under an economic incentives package, so tuition spend is the variable in most family budgets this year.

Equivalency, attestation and which papers actually count

  • Five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, British track
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that count of five
  • Plus one A-Level at grade E or two AS-Levels at the same grade
  • Verify on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate attestation authority, not with a tutor

IGCSE results do more than get a student into the sixth form. For a UAE university place, or for a file that will be read by a Ministry of Education equivalency officer, the certificate has to meet a published standard. On the British track, the requirement reported in July 2026 is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

The detail that catches families is what is excluded. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five required subjects. A student who sat exactly five IGCSEs including Arabic therefore does not have five that count, and one competitor ranking for these queries publishes a six-subject requirement that does not match the sourced rule. This is a subject-choice decision made in Year 9 or Year 10, which is the moment paper practice and entry planning stop being separate conversations.

Two cautions. First, IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency; the authority decides, and the process should be checked on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority before any plan depends on it. Second, we publish no IB points threshold for equivalency, because we have not read one on an official ministry page — and a number we cannot source is a number we will not put on 2,654 pages. Tutoring is also not required for equivalency, admission or progression; anyone implying otherwise is selling urgency.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across the UAE

Which emirate a family lives in changes three practical things about paper practice: who regulates the school and therefore sets its calendar, how late a timed paper can realistically start after the school run, and how deep the local supply of specialist markers is.

Dubai

KHDA oversees the quality of private education here: 227 private schools served 387,441 students in 2024-25, with 37% on a UK curriculum, so IGCSE cohorts are large and parallel sets common. Two schools a few kilometres apart can still read different Cambridge zone timetables; check the statement of entry, not a neighbour's.

Abu Dhabi

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Press-reported ADEK ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, so the second marker on a past paper is usually not the class teacher — which is the point of an independent mark.

Al Ain

Also ADEK territory, with smaller British-curriculum cohorts. A subject may have one teacher and no second set, so a script has no internal comparison. An externally marked paper is the only benchmark available, and it matters more here than in a six-set Dubai secondary.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Term dates and the shortened Ramadan day are set locally, which moves where a two-and-a-half-hour timed paper can sit in a week.

Ajman and Umm Al Quwain

The federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in both emirates. Many families commute to schools in Sharjah or Dubai, and a 90-minute return journey pushes a full timed paper past 19:00 on a school night — which is why weekend mornings carry most of the paper work here.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, like Sharjah's authority, approves curricula, programmes and assessment methods. No competitor page researched for this project mentions it once, so RAK families are routinely given Dubai advice about a calendar their school does not follow.

Fujairah

Ministry of Education territory, with the thinnest local supply of IGCSE subject specialists in the country. This is where online delivery earns its keep: a Fujairah candidate practising Cambridge Chemistry 0620 Paper 6 needs a Chemistry marker, not the nearest available tutor.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai — British-curriculum secondaries

These are the schools whose Year 11 cohorts bring the heaviest paper loads: nine or ten subjects, mocks in January, and a mix of Cambridge and Pearson entries inside one timetable. Students we support attend schools of this kind; the names are published here as context for the IGCSE exam centre landscape in Dubai, nothing more.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton School Dubai

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain schools sit under ADEK, and their January mock windows tend to land a fortnight earlier than Dubai's, which pulls the whole backwards-counted plan forward. Families here also deal with a longer school-bus leg, so timed papers more often run on Friday mornings than on school nights.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Al Ain English Speaking School

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Sharjah answers to SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah to the Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah to the Ministry of Education. Cohorts are smaller, specialist marking is harder to find locally, and term dates diverge from Dubai's — three reasons a northern-emirates plan cannot be a copy of a Dubai one.

  • Sharjah English School
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • RAK Academy
  • Ajman Academy
  • Fujairah Private Academy

Named schools are included as context for the UAE exam-centre and curriculum landscape; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any school or school group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the statement of entry, not the subject list

The first thing we ask for is the document the school issued: syllabus codes, components, tier and series. It takes a parent two minutes to find and it prevents the single most expensive error in paper practice — weeks spent on the wrong tier or the wrong component. If the school has not issued it yet, the subject teacher can confirm the codes.

  2. 02

One component, sat cold and timed

Before any teaching, your child sits one full component at the real duration with nothing on the desk. It is scanned or photographed and marked against the board's published scheme, with marks attributed per question. You receive the breakdown. Whether your child sees the total is your decision; the gap list is what the plan is built from.

  3. 03

    The calendar is written backwards

We take the date of the first paper, subtract the winter break, the mock fortnight, Ramadan's shortened days and the week after Eid, and distribute the remaining papers across what is left. You get the schedule in writing, with the entry and forecast-grade deadlines marked, because those are the dates that close decisions.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions, with a paper closing each block

Sessions run live online, one-to-one, at a time set on Gulf Standard Time around the school day. Teaching follows the last marked script. A timed component closes every three or four weeks to re-measure, alternating variants so no paper is sat twice. A short written note follows each marked script so the direction stays visible to you.

  5. 05

A review point at session four, and honesty about coverage

At session four we compare the second marked script against the first and say plainly whether the hours are working. If no UAE-based specialist is free for a niche component, we say so rather than filling the slot: a matched Chemistry marker a timezone away is more use than an available generalist, and you should get to choose.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking in the examiner's language, not an impression

Every script is marked against the board's published scheme, with method and answer marks separated, command-word errors tallied apart from content gaps, and the scheme's own wording quoted next to each mark awarded. A total alone is almost useless; a per-question breakdown is what tells a family which four topics the next month belongs to.

No practice material is sold to you

Past papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, specifications and grade thresholds are published free by Cambridge International and Pearson. We point you at the official pages and never host, resell or redistribute them. What is charged for is the marking, the diagnosis and the plan — the work the documents cannot do on their own.

The variant and tier are checked before the first lesson

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable, and the digit after the oblique on a paper is the variant. We read the statement of entry first so the practice matches the entry, then use the sibling variants from the same series as genuinely unseen papers at the same standard.

The UAE calendar is in the plan, not an afterthought

Ramadan's shortened school day, Eid, local term dates set by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Department of Knowledge or the Ministry of Education, and the compulsory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies hours all sit in the schedule from the start. A plan that ignores them loses three weeks and blames the student.

Coursework stops at the student's own words

Where a subject offers a coursework route, a tutor teaches the skills, questions the argument, points at a criterion that the evidence does not yet meet, and gives feedback on a draft the student produced. Finished work is not supplied, at any price. Providers in this market do sell it; that is a malpractice risk carried entirely by the candidate.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

How many IGCSE past papers should my child actually sit before the June series?+

Between two and four full components per subject, sat at the real duration and marked properly, does more than a dozen rushed ones. For a nine-subject Year 11 that is roughly twenty to thirty papers across the year, which only fits if the first one is sat in the autumn term. The useful number is set by marking capacity, not by appetite: one paper generates about three hours of marking and re-teaching, so a family who sits ten papers in the final fortnight will act on none of them. Spread them, and alternate variants so no paper is seen twice.

The file says 0625/42 and our school said Paper 4. Are those the same thing?+

Yes. 0625 is the Cambridge IGCSE Physics syllabus, the 4 is the component — Extended structured theory — and the 2 is the variant, the version sat by centres in a particular administrative zone and timetable. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six zones and publishes a separate timetable for each, warning that the correct version for your zone must be used. Practise the component and tier your statement of entry names; the other variants of that same component are then additional unseen papers at the identical standard, which is how you get twenty papers out of a syllabus rather than six.

Where do we download official past papers without paying anyone for them?+

Cambridge International publishes past question papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, specimen material and grade thresholds for released series on cambridgeinternational.org, and Pearson publishes the equivalent for Pearson Edexcel International GCSE past papers on qualifications.pearson.com. Both are free. Any provider charging a UAE family for access is charging for something the board gives away, and redistributing those documents is copyright infringement. Ask a prospective tutor whether past papers are included in the fee: a provider who tells you they are free and sends you the official link is being straight with you about a small thing, which usually predicts the larger ones.

Should my son mark his own past paper, or does that defeat the point?+

He should mark it, and then someone else should mark the same script independently. A student reading their own writing awards the mark they intended to earn and finishes several marks high, which is ordinary rather than dishonest. Marking twice turns that bias into information: set the two totals side by side question by question, and every question where the gap is two marks or more is a topic for the next session. Questions where both markers agree need no session time at all. The gap between the marks is a better diagnostic than either number on its own.

My daughter scores well on topic tests but drops marks across a whole paper. What causes that?+

Almost always pace and command words rather than content. A topic test asks questions in the order she revised them, with the topic named at the top. A whole paper asks them cold, out of order, with the command word doing the work the heading used to do, and with a clock running. Mark one of her scripts for command-word compliance alone, ignoring content: count how many answers described when the paper asked her to explain, or explained when it asked her to state. That count is usually the whole gap, and it is the fastest thing in the paper to fix.

What is an examiner report, and is it more useful than the mark scheme?+

They answer different questions. The mark scheme says what earned credit on that paper. The examiner report, written by the principal examiner after marking, says what the whole cohort got wrong and why — which misconception recurred, which command word was misread, which question was answered at the wrong depth. Read the mark scheme while marking the script, then read the report to see whether your child's errors are the cohort's errors. If they are, the fix is a known one; if they are not, the gap is individual and needs a different session.

Are past papers from before the current syllabus still worth sitting?+

Partly. Topics removed from the syllabus are wasted time, and question styles drift, so an old paper flatters or punishes unfairly. The practical approach is to take older papers apart for question practice on topics the current specification still covers, and to reserve recent series for full timed sittings where the style matters. Check the syllabus or specification on the board's own subject page first: it lists the current content and the component structure. Where a syllabus has just changed and no released series exists yet, the board's specimen assessment materials are the correct substitute.

When in Year 10 should past-paper work start, or is that too early?+

Start in Year 10, but not with whole papers. In Year 10 the right unit is the individual question pulled from several series on a topic that has just been taught, marked against the scheme so the student learns the marking conventions early. Whole timed components belong in Year 11 once enough of the syllabus exists to make a full paper meaningful. Students who meet a mark scheme for the first time in April of Year 11 spend their last weeks learning how marks are awarded, which is a skill they could have had for free eighteen months earlier.

There is no laboratory at home. How does Paper 6 get practised?+

Paper 6 is the written alternative to practical paper, and it practises cleanly over video because it is written throughout: completing results tables, plotting and reading graphs, identifying variables, stating precautions, naming sources of error and suggesting improvements. None of that needs apparatus. What does need apparatus is Cambridge Paper 5, the practical test conducted in a laboratory — if your child is entered for Paper 5, bench time is the school's to provide and no online session substitutes for it. Check the statement of entry to see which of the two is actually on the entry.

The mark scheme writes 'ecf' next to an answer. What does that mean for the marks?+

Error carried forward. In a sequence of dependent calculations, one early mistake would otherwise destroy every mark after it, so the scheme instructs the examiner to accept later steps that are correct given the student's own wrong value. It is why working is worth writing out even when the student knows the answer is going wrong: method marks survive an arithmetic slip, and answer marks are listed separately from them. A student who crosses out a failed attempt and leaves nothing on the page forfeits marks the scheme would have allowed them to keep.

How long should a session be if the real paper runs two and a half hours?+

The paper is sat outside the session, not inside it. Paying a tutor to watch a two-and-a-half-hour paper being written is paying for a timer. Have the script sat at home at the real duration, submit it a day ahead so the marking is done first, and spend a 60-minute session rerunning the worst five answers with the scheme on screen. On session length generally, KHDA calculates school instructional time in 40-minute lesson units, which is why a child used to 40-minute periods copes better with 60 minutes plus a short break than with an unbroken 90.

Do grade thresholds from an old series tell us anything about a mock score?+

They give context and they make a poor target. Cambridge publishes threshold tables for each series, and the thresholds are set after that series is marked, so they move every time. A mark that reached a particular grade one June may not reach it the next. Use an old threshold to understand roughly where a script sits, never as the number to aim at. This is why we report marks and components to parents rather than predicted grades: a mark on a named component is a fact, and a predicted grade built on a moving threshold is an opinion wearing a number.

Ramadan sits across our past-paper block. How many papers should we plan for those weeks?+

Roughly half as many, and at different times. The school day shortens, evenings move, and energy in the late afternoon is not what a timed component needs. Plan one timed paper a week instead of two during those weeks, move the sitting to a post-Iftar slot or a weekend morning, and keep the marking sessions — which are shorter and less demanding than sitting a paper — in their normal places. Then write the lost sittings back into the two weeks after Eid rather than hoping they absorb. Plans that ignore Ramadan lose about three weeks and blame the student.

Does past-paper practice help with the Ministry of Education equivalency application?+

Only indirectly, through the grades. On the British track the reported requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade — and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. That makes subject choice a Year 9 or Year 10 decision, not a Year 11 one. IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency; verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority before any plan rests on it.

My son is sitting the papers as a private candidate in Dubai. Does that change how we use past papers?+

It changes the logistics more than the practice. A private candidate needs an exam centre willing to accept the entry, and that centre's zone determines which Cambridge timetable applies, so the entry has to be settled well before the centre's final entry deadline, which for a Cambridge June series falls in the spring and for a November series earlier still — ask the centre for that date in writing, because a private candidate has no school chasing it on their behalf. Without a school marking mocks, independent marking is not a second opinion but the only one, so the diagnostic paper matters more. Coursework and practical components are the real constraint: check with the centre which components it can offer before choosing subjects.

Which IGCSE subjects in a nine-subject timetable repay timed paper work the most?+

The ones where marks are lost to form rather than to knowledge. Mathematics and the sciences repay it first, because method marks, error carried forward and the reagent-condition-observation rule are all learnable conventions. Economics, Business and the humanities repay it next, because evaluation marks are invisible to a student marking their own work. Languages with speaking components repay it least, since the mark depends on a recording the school makes. If the hours are limited, start with the Extended structured theory papers: those are the components that decide the grade.

Start from the date of the first paper and work back

Find the morning of the first exam, then count the weeks back through the winter break, the mock fortnight, Ramadan and the week after Eid. What is left is the plan. Send us the statement of entry and we will mark one timed component against the board's published scheme, return the marks question by question, and write the calendar backwards from that date with the entry and forecast-grade deadlines in it. The first lesson is free — one lesson, no card required — and every session after it is live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. If no specialist is free for a component, we will tell you that instead of filling the slot.
