IB MYP Tutor in The Lakes

An IB MYP tutor in The Lakes is usually hired because of a report nobody can read. The grades arrive as four letters, A to D, each marked out of eight, and a parent in Emirates Living is left guessing which one matters. School ends between 2:30pm and 3:30pm, the children are eleven to sixteen, and the usable hour is early and short. IB Gram teaches the Middle Years Programme one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, in sessions sized for the age rather than for a billing unit.

  • Sessions of 45, 60 or 90 minutes, chosen by the child's age
  • Tutors who teach by criterion, not by year group
  • Report-decoding session included before any plan is written
  • One free trial lesson per student, no card details needed to book

IB & IGCSE in The Lakes

Why MYP reports are the hardest thing a Dubai parent has to read

A British-curriculum report says 62 per cent and a predicted grade. An MYP report says criterion A 6, criterion B 4, criterion C 5, criterion D 7, and then a number out of seven that bears no obvious relationship to any of them. Parents in The Lakes who moved from another system, and there are a great many, find this genuinely opaque. The usual reaction is either to ignore the letters and look only at the final number, which hides the actual problem, or to treat a 4 as a failure, which it is not. Neither response helps the child, and both are the reason MYP tutoring is so often booked a year later than it should be.

The letters are the useful part. Each MYP subject group is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight, and the criteria measure different things. In Sciences, criterion A is knowing and understanding, B is inquiring and designing, C is processing and evaluating, and D is reflecting on the impacts of science. A child scoring 7 on A and 3 on C does not have a science problem. They have a data-handling problem, and that specific weakness will follow them into Diploma Physics or IGCSE Chemistry unless somebody names it. The whole value of an MYP report is that it tells you which of four skills is failing, and the whole tragedy is that most parents never find out how to read it.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For this age group the format has a specific advantage that parents notice quickly: sessions can be short. A forty-five-minute slot at 4:30pm for an MYP 2 student is practical on a screen and absurd for a visiting tutor, because nobody drives across Emirates Living for forty-five minutes. Being able to buy the right amount of time for an eleven-year-old, rather than the amount of time that justifies a journey, changes what tuition at this age can be.

The rest of this page sets out what the programme contains and what a tutor should actually be doing in it. The eight subject groups and their criteria. How a criterion total becomes a grade from 1 to 7. The MYP 5 year, with the Personal Project and the optional eAssessment. The parts of the programme that look like jargon and are not, meaning global contexts, key concepts, approaches to learning and interdisciplinary units. The two bridges out of MYP, into the Diploma and into IGCSE, and the gap in each. How Language Acquisition phases work alongside the Arabic that every Dubai private school is required to teach. And what this costs in AED at the shorter session lengths this age group actually needs.

If your child is in MYP 4 or MYP 5, read the transition table first. That is the one with a deadline behind it.

At a glance

  • Eight subject groups, four criteria each, every criterion marked out of eight
  • A criterion total out of 32 converts to a grade from 1 to 7
  • Language Acquisition is organised in six phases rather than by year
  • The Personal Project runs in MYP 5 and is marked out of 24
  • MYP eAssessment is optional and leads to the IB MYP Certificate
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Middle Years Programme sits in the middle of a longer sequence, and a Lakes family usually needs to know what came before and what comes next as much as what is happening now. These four stages cover almost every conversation.

PYPAges 3-12 · PYP

Primary Years Programme

The programme that feeds MYP 1 in a continuum school. Assessment is largely formative and reported against learning outcomes rather than against four criteria, so the arrival of criterion marks in MYP 1 is a genuine change for both child and parent. Students coming into MYP 1 from a non-IB primary school meet the criteria system with no preparation at all.

Emirates International School Meadows runs the full continuum within a few minutes of The Lakes, so some local children move from PYP into MYP without changing building. Those who join MYP 1 from a British or Indian primary school in the same neighbourhood need a term to understand what the letters mean, and that is a reasonable thing to ask a tutor for help with.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria out of eight. The programme also carries approaches to learning skills, key concepts, six global contexts, at least one interdisciplinary unit a year, service as action, and the Personal Project in the final year. Grades are reported from 1 to 7 after a published conversion from the criterion total.

MYP enquiries from Emirates Living cluster at two points. The first is MYP 1 and 2, when a family new to the system wants the reports explained. The second is MYP 4 and 5, when subject choices for sixteen are approaching and a weak criterion that nobody addressed in MYP 2 has become a real obstacle.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The usual destination for a continuum student. Assessment changes shape entirely: criterion marks out of eight are replaced by examination papers marked against mark schemes and command terms, plus internally assessed work with its own criteria. Students arrive strong on inquiry and weaker on timed written technique, which is a predictable and teachable gap rather than a surprise.

Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills and Emirates International School Meadows both offer the Diploma within reach of The Lakes, so a local MYP student often continues into DP without moving school. The handover year is MYP 5, and the students who cope best are the ones who practised timed writing before they needed it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The IGCSE alternative at fourteen

A real option in this neighbourhood rather than a theoretical one, because several nearby schools run the British route. A student leaving MYP 3 for a Year 10 IGCSE course meets subject-specific syllabuses with numbered codes, tiering on some Cambridge subjects and terminal examinations instead of continuous criterion assessment. The content overlap is substantial; the assessment culture is not.

Dubai British School Emirates Hills, Regent International School and Dubai College all run IGCSE within reach of The Lakes, which is why this switch happens more often here than the continuum schools' numbers suggest. Families considering it should ask both schools what bridging work they expect, since the answer differs by subject.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is the programme itself: eight subject groups, each with its own four criteria. Knowing the criterion names for your child's weakest subject is the most useful thing a Lakes parent can take from this page, because it turns a vague report into a specific instruction for a tutor.

Sciences

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A knowing and understanding, B inquiring and designing, C processing and evaluating, D reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion C is the one that predicts Diploma and IGCSE performance most reliably, because data processing and evaluation are examined directly in both systems and are rarely practised outside school.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating, D applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B surprises parents from other systems: a child who computes accurately can still score poorly because the criterion rewards generalising a rule and justifying it, not getting the answer.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A analysing, B organising, C producing text, D using language. The split matters because a strong writer with weak analysis scores unevenly and is often told to 'write more', which is the wrong instruction. Criterion A improves through close reading practice rather than through more writing.

Language acquisition

Phases 1-6 · criteria A-D

A listening, B reading, C speaking, D writing. Organised into six phases rather than by year group, so two children in the same MYP year can sit in different phases of the same language. Phase placement, not age, determines what a tutor should be teaching.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A knowing and understanding, B investigating, C communicating, D thinking critically. Criterion D is where the marks are won in MYP 4 and 5, and it is also the criterion most students have never been taught explicitly, because critical thinking is assumed rather than instructed.

Design

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A inquiring and analysing, B developing ideas, C creating the solution, D evaluating. The documented design cycle carries most of the marks, which means a beautifully made product with a thin research and evaluation record scores below a modest product documented properly.

Arts

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A investigating, B developing, C creating or performing, D evaluating. Students with genuine talent often score lower than expected because the process journal is where criteria A, B and D live. Support here is almost entirely about documenting thinking rather than about technique.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-D

A knowing and understanding, B planning for performance, C applying and performing, D reflecting and improving performance. Half the assessment is written, which regularly catches out able athletes and their parents, and it is straightforward to improve once anybody says so.

The Personal Project

MYP 5 · criteria A-C

An independent project in the final MYP year, assessed against planning, applying skills and reflecting, each out of eight for a total of 24. Support is process coaching only: goal setting, time planning and questions about the report the student is writing. The project and the report must be the student's own work.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5 · criteria A-C

At least one a year, combining two subject groups around a shared concept, with their own criteria for disciplinary grounding, synthesis and reflection. Students who treat them as two homework tasks stapled together lose the synthesis marks, which is the whole point of the unit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The right arrangement for an MYP student depends more on age than on subject. An eleven-year-old and a fifteen-year-old need different session lengths, different times of day and a different kind of hour.

Short weekly sessions for MYP 1 to 3

Forty-five or sixty minutes, placed in the late afternoon while concentration is still available. The hour targets one criterion rather than a whole subject, usually criterion C in Sciences or criterion B in Mathematics, because that is where a specific weakness shows and where it can be measured again next term.

  • 45 or 60 minutes, which only works because nobody is travelling
  • One named criterion per block of sessions, so progress is checkable
  • Short written note after each session, written for the parent

Ninety minutes for MYP 4 and 5

Longer sessions for older students, aimed at written technique, criterion D thinking in Individuals and Societies, interdisciplinary synthesis, and the preparation that makes the first term of the Diploma or of Year 10 survivable. Timed writing practice is the usual core of these.

  • Extended writing practised to time and marked against criteria
  • Transition work towards DP command terms or IGCSE papers
  • Subject choices for sixteen discussed against the actual criterion profile

Personal Project and eAssessment support

A short run of sessions in MYP 5 around the two fixed points of the year. Process coaching for the Personal Project, meaning goal setting, planning and questions about the report, and on-screen examination technique for students whose school enters them for eAssessment.

  • Planning, time management and reflection, never content production
  • On-screen examination practice where the school enters candidates
  • The project, the product and the report all remain the student's own

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Lakes

01

How to read an MYP report without a glossary

Take the subject your child is weakest in and find its four criterion marks. Each is out of eight. Then look up what those four criteria are called in that subject group, because the names are the diagnosis. In Sciences a low criterion C is data processing. In Mathematics a low criterion B is pattern investigation and justification. In Language and Literature a low criterion A is textual analysis. In Individuals and Societies a low criterion D is critical thinking. Those are four completely different problems with four completely different remedies, and all of them look identical on a report that only shows the final grade.

The second thing to look at is the shape of the profile rather than its height. A child with four marks of 5 is consistent and needs general work. A child with 7, 7, 3, 6 has one specific hole, which is far better news and far cheaper to fix. The uneven profile is the common one in Dubai, particularly for students who joined the MYP from another system, because the criteria that reward process and reflection are unfamiliar to anyone trained on content tests.

The third thing is the trend. Criterion marks move slowly and a single assessment is noisy, so compare the same criterion across two or three reporting points before concluding anything. A drop from 6 to 4 in one unit may just mean a harder task; the same drop sustained over a year is a real decline. Bring two reports to a first conversation with a tutor rather than one, and the plan will be better for it. The table below lists the criteria for each subject group so you can do the lookup in one place.

From four criterion marks to one grade out of seven

The conversion is the part that makes MYP reports feel arbitrary, and it is not. The four criterion marks are added to give a total out of 32, and that total is then placed in a band to produce a grade from 1 to 7. The bands are not equal in width, which is why a small change in criterion marks can move a grade and a larger change sometimes cannot. Your school's MYP coordinator can give you the exact boundary table they apply, and asking for it is a reasonable request that most coordinators are happy to meet.

Two practical consequences follow. The first is that the cheapest grade improvement available is usually in the weakest criterion, not the strongest subject. Moving a 3 to a 5 adds two marks to the total for a fraction of the effort that moving a 6 to a 7 would take, and the grade conversion does not care which criterion the marks came from. A parent who understands that stops asking for general subject help and starts asking for criterion-specific work, which is both cheaper and more effective.

The second is that a grade of 4 is not a failure. The 1 to 7 scale is the same scale the Diploma uses, where 4 is a pass in most subjects, and MYP tasks are deliberately set to stretch. Parents arriving from systems where 70 per cent is respectable and 40 per cent is alarming read a 4 as a crisis and respond by buying the wrong amount of tuition. The useful question is not whether the number is high but whether the profile is even and the trend is upward.

MYP 5: the Personal Project, eAssessment and the year that decides the next two

The final MYP year carries more than the ones before it. The Personal Project runs across it: an independent piece of work chosen by the student, assessed against three criteria, planning, applying skills and reflecting, each out of eight for a total of 24. Service as action continues. Subject choices for sixteen are made. And some schools enter candidates for MYP eAssessment, the optional on-screen examinations and ePortfolios that lead to the IB MYP Certificate.

The Personal Project fails in predictable ways and almost none of them are about ability. Students choose a goal that is too large, start the report in the final fortnight, or keep no record of the process, which is where most of the marks live. The project is marked on planning, skill application and reflection rather than on the finished object, so a modest goal documented carefully outscores an ambitious one documented badly. The support that helps is a weekly fifteen-minute discipline on the process journal, started early, which is dull and extremely effective.

On eAssessment, the honest position is that whether your child sits it is the school's decision, not yours, and the first thing to do is ask. Where a school does enter candidates, the on-screen examination is a different skill from criterion-assessed coursework and benefits from specific practice. The boundary on the Personal Project is the same as on any assessed work: a tutor may ask questions, teach planning and time management and read a draft the student has written. A tutor may not supply content for the project or draft the report. No IB Gram tutor will produce a Personal Project for a student.

Global contexts, key concepts and approaches to learning, in plain words

MYP vocabulary puts parents off, and most of it describes something ordinary. Key concepts are the big ideas a unit is built around, sixteen of them across the programme, things like change, systems, identity and relationships. Global contexts are the six real-world framings a unit can be set in, including identities and relationships, scientific and technical innovation, and globalisation and sustainability. Approaches to learning are five skill categories, thinking, communication, social, self-management and research, taught alongside subject content rather than separately.

None of these is graded on its own, which is why parents reasonably wonder whether they matter. They matter because they shape the tasks. A Sciences unit framed in the global context of globalisation and sustainability will set an assessment about a real system with competing considerations, and a student who answers it as a pure content question will lose criterion D marks. Understanding the framing is not an extra; it is how the task is read correctly.

Interdisciplinary units work the same way. At least one a year combines two subject groups around a shared concept and is assessed on disciplinary grounding, synthesis and reflection. Students who treat it as two separate pieces of homework attached to each other lose exactly the marks the unit exists to award. Approaches to learning deserve a specific note for this age group: self-management is the one that most often limits a capable MYP 3 or MYP 4 student, and it is teachable, which makes it one of the better uses of a tutoring hour at thirteen.

05

Where an MYP session actually fits in a Lakes afternoon

MYP students are eleven to sixteen, and the scheduling problem is not the same as it is for a Diploma student. A twelve-year-old cannot concentrate at 8:30pm, so the late weekday window that works for a sixteen-year-old is useless here. Most Emirates Living schools finish the academic day between 2:30pm and 3:30pm, children at schools inside the community are home by about 3:15pm, and those commuting back from Al Barsha arrive closer to four. Activities run to around five on the days they are scheduled.

That leaves two genuinely good windows for this age group, and both are short. The first is 4pm to 5:30pm on a day with no activity, when a child is home, fed and still alert. The second is immediately after dinner, roughly 6pm to 7pm, before tiredness takes over. Both suit a forty-five or sixty-minute session rather than a ninety-minute one, and that is the format most MYP 1 to MYP 3 students should be buying. For MYP 4 and 5 the later windows open up and ninety minutes becomes useful, particularly for timed writing.

This is where the delivery format does real work rather than marketing work. A forty-five-minute slot is not economic for a visiting tutor, because the drive across Emirates Living costs more than the lesson, so families are pushed into longer sessions than their child can use. On a screen, the session can be the length the child needs. Two short sessions a week also become practical, which for criterion-specific work at this age is usually more effective than one long one. The table below maps the age bands to the windows and the lengths that hold.

The two bridges out of MYP, and the gap in each

Every MYP student leaves the programme at sixteen, either into the Diploma or out of the IB system into A Levels, and in this neighbourhood both happen often because both kinds of school sit within twenty minutes. The content overlap in either direction is larger than families fear. The assessment-culture gap is larger than they expect, and it is the gap that costs grades in the first term after the switch.

Into the Diploma, the change is from criterion-assessed tasks with time to think to examination papers marked against command terms under time pressure. An MYP student who has written thoughtfully for five years may never have written a full answer in twenty-five minutes. The internally assessed work is more familiar territory, since inquiry and evaluation are what MYP criteria have been rewarding all along, and continuum students often outperform on those components while struggling on papers.

Into IGCSE, the change is from concept-framed inquiry to syllabus content with numbered codes, defined specification points and, on some Cambridge subjects, a Core and Extended tier decision. MYP students usually arrive with better investigative skills and thinner content coverage in specific topics, because MYP units select depth over completeness. The remedy is a content audit against the specification rather than general tuition, and it is best done in the summer before Year 10 rather than in the Christmas term of it. Ask the receiving school for the specification and work through it topic by topic with the student, marking each one as secure, shaky or never taught.

Language acquisition phases and the Arabic every Dubai school must teach

Two language systems run in parallel for an MYP student in Dubai and they are often confused. The first is MYP Language Acquisition, organised into six phases rather than by year group, so a child's phase depends on prior experience in that language rather than on age. Two students in the same MYP 3 class can sit in Phase 2 and Phase 5 of the same language and be assessed against the same four criteria at genuinely different levels. For a tutor the phase is the useful information; the year group tells you almost nothing.

The second is the UAE requirement. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA requiring implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and lessons for any mandatory subject are advised to run at least 25 minutes.

The rules on how those classes are organised are specific. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language. Schools must also ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects, and for the mandatory subjects the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited. That last point means Arabic support should be arranged with the school's guidance rather than around it.

What MYP support costs in AED, priced by the session length a child can use

Most published tutoring rates are quoted per hour, which hides something that matters for this age group. If a twelve-year-old gets real value from forty-five minutes and nothing from the ninety that follows, the honest unit is the session rather than the hour. Dubai market rates per hour, as published in October 2026, run roughly AED 45 to 150 for budget online generalists, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB and IGCSE specialists. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase quotes around AED 270; Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate work gives the specialist band.

Convert those to the session lengths an MYP student actually uses and the arithmetic looks different. A forty-five-minute session at a mid-band rate is roughly three quarters of the hourly figure, and two of them in a week will usually beat one ninety-minute block for criterion-specific work at twelve or thirteen. That option barely exists with a visiting tutor, because travel makes a short session uneconomic: Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500, with the drive paid for inside the hour. Monthly packages observed in the Dubai market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visiting sessions.

Every figure above is another provider's published rate or a survey band as of the October 2026 research, not an IB Gram price list. Ask about our own rates on the consultation call, where the session length can be set to the child rather than to a package. Useful context for a household budget: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places.

Starting MYP support from The Lakes, and what the first session should look like

Bring two reports rather than one, and bring the subject you are least happy about. Name the four criterion marks in it if you have them. With that, a tutor can tell you in a single reply whether the issue is content, method, writing or self-management, and quote a plan against a named criterion instead of a subject. An enquiry that says 'MYP 2, struggling in Sciences' takes a session to decode; one that says 'MYP 2 Sciences, criterion A 7, criterion C 3, same pattern last term' does not.

The first session should not be a lesson. For an MYP student it should be a diagnostic: a short task that exposes the weak criterion, a look at a piece of returned work and the task-specific clarifications it was marked against, and a plain explanation to the parent of what the letters mean and which one is worth spending money on. That conversation is where most of the value sits, and a family that has it properly often needs fewer sessions than they expected rather than more.

Then a free trial lesson, one per student and bookable without card details, with the tutor who would continue. Ask for a session length that fits your child rather than the one that fits a package, and if the match is wrong say so and ask for another; that costs nothing. The honest caveat: the 4pm to 6pm window that suits MYP 1 to MYP 3 is narrow and it is contested, and some subject groups, Design and Arts in particular, have fewer specialists than Sciences and Mathematics. If nobody suitable is free in the window you need, you will be told with a date rather than matched to whoever is available.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Lakes

For an MYP family the relevant fact about each neighbouring community is whether its schools run the continuum or the British route, because that decides whether your child's cohort stays in criteria or leaves for syllabus codes at fourteen.

The Meadows

Two minutes away and the location of the nearest continuum school, so MYP students here can stay in the same programme from primary through to the Diploma. Most MYP 1 and MYP 2 enquiries in Emirates Living come from this pocket.

The Springs

Townhouses with the youngest average age in Emirates Living, which makes it the densest source of MYP 1 to MYP 3 requests. Sessions here are typically 45 or 60 minutes and placed earlier, before the evening closes in on a twelve-year-old.

The Greens

Apartments across Sheikh Zayed Road with a British-curriculum school inside the community, so families here more often ask whether to leave MYP at fourteen than how to improve a criterion mark within it.

The Views

Towers by Emirates Golf Club, smaller households, later evenings. MYP 4 and MYP 5 students from here often take a single weekly slot aimed at the Personal Project or at writing technique before the Diploma.

Emirates Hills

Large villas immediately north with a Diploma school nearby. Enquiries skew to MYP 4 and 5, where the question is usually what Higher Level subjects a current criterion profile actually supports.

Al Barsha

Fifteen to twenty minutes east, with several large schools including IB and American options. The return drive at 3:30pm is the slowest part of a Lakes afternoon, which rules out the early session an MYP 1 child would otherwise benefit from.

Al Sufouh

British-route schools on the coastal stretch. MYP conversations with Lakes families whose children are here tend to be about moving into the programme rather than progressing within it, usually at MYP 4.

Dubai Marina

Apartments with later household rhythms, so MYP sessions booked from here sit at the late end of what suits this age group. Weekend mornings carry more of the load than they do in the villa communities.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send two reports and the criterion marks

Name the subject you are least happy about and give the four criterion marks from the last two reporting points. That is enough for a tutor to identify whether the problem is content, method, writing or self-management, and to quote a plan against a named criterion rather than against a whole subject.

  2. 02

    A diagnostic before a lesson

The first session is spent finding the weak criterion rather than teaching. A short task, a look at returned work and the clarifications it was marked against, and a plain explanation of what the letters mean. Families who do this properly often buy fewer sessions than they first expected.

  3. 03

A trial at the length your child can use

One free trial per student, no card details needed, with the tutor who would continue, and at 45, 60 or 90 minutes depending on age. Buying ninety minutes for a twelve-year-old wastes half of it, and the only reason that is usually on offer elsewhere is that somebody has to justify a journey.

  4. 04

Work one criterion at a time

Each block of sessions targets a single named criterion so progress is measurable against the next report rather than felt. Moving a 3 to a 5 adds more to the grade total than moving a 6 to a 7 and takes a fraction of the time, which is why criterion-specific work is both cheaper and faster.

  5. 05

    Reassess at each reporting point

MYP criterion marks move slowly, so the review point is the school report rather than the week. At each one the plan is checked against the new profile and the frequency adjusted, and a criterion that has recovered is dropped from the plan rather than kept on for the sake of the booking.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The report explained before anything is sold

The first useful thing in MYP tutoring is understanding what criterion A to D mean in your child's weakest subject. That conversation happens before a plan is written, and it sometimes ends with a recommendation for fewer sessions in a narrower area than the family came in expecting.

Sessions sized for an eleven-year-old

Forty-five and sixty-minute sessions are genuinely available, which matters because a younger MYP student gets little from the second hour. Short sessions only work when nobody is travelling to them, which is why visiting arrangements push families into lengths their child cannot use.

Taught by criterion, not by year group

A tutor is matched to the specific criterion that is costing marks, whether that is data processing in Sciences, pattern investigation in Mathematics or critical thinking in Individuals and Societies. Those are four different teaching jobs and a general year-group tutor treats them as one.

The Personal Project stays the student's

Support on the Personal Project is goal setting, planning discipline, process-journal habits and questions about a draft the student has written. No content is supplied and no report is drafted. The project, the product and the write-up have to be the candidate's own work throughout.

Transition planned a year early

The gap between MYP and either the Diploma or IGCSE is an assessment-culture gap rather than a content one, and it is cheapest to close in MYP 4 and the summer after it. The transition table on this page exists because no competing page in this search maps it subject by subject.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Lakes: your questions answered

What do the A, B, C and D marks on my child's MYP report actually mean?+

They are four separate assessment criteria, each marked out of eight, and each measures something different. In Sciences, A is knowing and understanding, B is inquiring and designing, C is processing and evaluating, and D is reflecting on the impacts of science. In Mathematics, B is investigating patterns rather than computing answers. The names are the diagnosis: a low C in Sciences is a data-handling problem, not a science problem. Look up the four criterion names for your child's weakest subject group, and the report stops being opaque and starts being useful.

How does a criterion mark out of eight turn into a grade out of seven?+

The four criterion marks are added to give a total out of 32, and that total falls into a band that produces a grade from 1 to 7. The bands are not equal in width, which is why a small change sometimes moves a grade and a larger one sometimes does not. Ask your school's MYP coordinator for the boundary table they apply; it is a reasonable request. The practical consequence is that the cheapest marks are always in the weakest criterion, because the conversion does not care which criterion the marks came from.

Is a grade of 4 in the MYP something to worry about?+

Not in itself. The MYP uses the same 1 to 7 scale as the Diploma, where 4 is a pass in most subjects, and MYP tasks are deliberately set to stretch rather than to be completed comfortably. Parents arriving from systems where percentages are the currency often read a 4 as a crisis and buy the wrong amount of tuition in response. The better questions are whether the four criterion marks are even and whether the trend across two or three reporting points is upward. An uneven profile is more informative than a low average.

Should a child in The Lakes stay in the MYP or move to IGCSE at fourteen?+

Both routes are available within twenty minutes of The Lakes, which is why this comes up so often here. The content overlap is larger than families fear and the assessment-culture gap is larger than they expect. MYP students usually arrive at IGCSE with stronger investigative skills and thinner coverage of specific specification content, because MYP units choose depth over completeness. If you are considering the move, ask both schools what bridging work they expect, and plan a content audit against the specification for the summer before Year 10.

What is the Personal Project and when does my child do it?+

It is an independent project in the final MYP year, chosen by the student and assessed against three criteria, planning, applying skills and reflecting, each out of eight for a total of 24. The marks go to the process rather than to the finished object, which is why a modest goal documented carefully outscores an ambitious one documented badly. The predictable failures are a goal that is too large, a report started in the last fortnight and a process journal nobody kept. A weekly fifteen minutes on the journal from the start prevents all three.

Does my child have to sit the MYP eAssessment?+

That is the school's decision rather than the family's, and the first step is simply to ask. Where a school does enter candidates, eAssessment combines optional on-screen examinations with moderated ePortfolios and leads to the IB MYP Certificate. The on-screen examination is a different skill from criterion-assessed classroom work, so it benefits from specific timing and technique practice using official sample material. Where a school does not enter candidates, MYP 5 grades come from internal criterion assessment and the Personal Project remains the fixed external-facing piece of work.

How long should a tutoring session be for a child in MYP 1 or MYP 2?+

Forty-five to sixty minutes, and not longer. An eleven or twelve-year-old gets real value from the first forty-five minutes of focused work and very little from the hour after it, so a ninety-minute session is mostly a billing decision rather than a teaching one. Two short sessions a week usually beat one long one for criterion-specific work at this age. Short sessions only make sense when nobody is travelling, which is why they are rarely offered by visiting tutors: the drive across Emirates Living would cost more than the lesson.

Which MYP subject groups do Emirates Living families ask about most?+

Sciences and Mathematics lead, usually because of criterion C in Sciences and criterion B in Mathematics, the two criteria that reward process rather than recall and that students from content-tested systems have never practised. Language and literature comes next, almost always for criterion A analysis rather than for writing. Individuals and societies arrives in MYP 4 and 5, when criterion D critical thinking starts carrying real weight. Design and Arts generate fewer enquiries but have fewer specialists available, so they are worth asking about earlier in the term.

Do global contexts and key concepts affect my child's marks?+

Not directly, because neither is graded on its own, but they shape every task your child is set. A Sciences unit framed in the global context of globalisation and sustainability will set an assessment about a real system with competing considerations, and a student who answers it as a pure content question loses criterion D marks. Understanding the framing is part of reading the task correctly rather than an optional extra. The same applies to interdisciplinary units, where the synthesis marks exist precisely for connecting two subject groups rather than answering each separately.

My child scores highly on criterion A and poorly on criterion C. What does that tell me?+

That the content is secure and a process skill is missing, which is good news. In Sciences a low C means data processing and evaluation: plotting, interpreting, judging whether a conclusion is supported. In Arts or Design it points at the documented process rather than the product. The remedy is narrow and measurable, which makes it cheap: a block of sessions aimed at that one criterion, then a check against the next report. A child with 7, 7, 3, 6 needs far less tuition than a child with four marks of 4, even though the totals are close.

How do MYP Language Acquisition phases work alongside compulsory Arabic?+

They are two separate systems. MYP Language Acquisition is organised into six phases based on prior experience rather than on age, so two students in the same MYP year can sit in different phases of the same language and be assessed against the same four criteria at different levels. Compulsory Arabic is a UAE requirement: Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab groups. Ask the school which phase and which Arabic stream your child is in.

What is the gap between MYP 5 and the first term of the Diploma?+

It is a writing-under-time-pressure gap more than a content gap. Five years of criterion-assessed tasks give a student room to think, redraft and reflect, and the Diploma then asks for a full answer in twenty-five minutes against a command term. Continuum students often outperform on internally assessed work, where inquiry and evaluation are exactly what MYP criteria have been rewarding, while struggling on papers. The fix is timed writing practice started in MYP 4 rather than discovered in DP1, and it is one of the most cost-effective blocks of tutoring available.

What should a Lakes family budget for MYP tutoring?+

Published Dubai hourly rates run roughly AED 45 to 150 for budget online generalists, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB and IGCSE specialists, per Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate work. For MYP the useful conversion is to session length: at a mid-band rate a forty-five-minute session is roughly three quarters of the hourly figure, and two short sessions a week often beat one long one at this age. Those are other providers' published figures as of October 2026, not IB Gram prices.

Can a tutor help with the Personal Project without doing any of it?+

Yes, and that is the only acceptable arrangement. A tutor may help a student set a realistic goal, build a weekly discipline around the process journal, teach planning and time management, explain what each of the three criteria rewards, and ask questions about a draft the student has written. A tutor may not supply content, make the product or draft the report. The project and the write-up have to be the candidate's own work from start to finish, and no IB Gram tutor will produce a Personal Project for a student.

Start with the letters, not the number

Find your child's weakest MYP subject, write down the four criterion marks, and look up what those four criteria are called in that subject group. In ten minutes you will know whether the problem is content, method, writing or organisation, and that single piece of information is worth more than a term of general tutoring aimed at the subject as a whole. Send those marks through with your child's MYP year and the afternoon window that is reliably free, and the trial lesson can be set at the length that suits their age rather than the length that suits a package.
