IGCSE Science Tutor in Serena

An IGCSE science tutor in Serena has to fit three disciplines into one evening that starts somewhere between 15:45 and 16:40 depending on the school. This page works out which science belongs in which slot, how practical catch-up collides with the Dubailand commute, and how to build a revision week that holds. Teaching is one-to-one, live online.

  • Each discipline placed in the slot it can actually survive
  • Practical catch-up planned around the commute, not ignored
  • Route and board confirmed from the entry statement first
  • Free first lesson with the matched tutor before anything is booked

IB & IGCSE in Serena

Three sciences, one evening, and a long drive in between

Serena sits off Al Qudra Road at the outer edge of the Dubailand belt, among clusters including Bella Casa and Casa Viva, with Mudon, Villanova and Remraam alongside. Its Year 10 and Year 11 students attend schools from the Dubailand and Sustainable City cluster ten minutes away to the larger British-curriculum schools in Al Barsha and Jumeirah Park, forty to fifty-five minutes away in the afternoon. The arrival time at home varies by nearly an hour, and science is the subject group most affected.

The reason is arithmetic rather than difficulty. Most IGCSE students carry three sciences, whether as separate subjects or as a coordinated course examined across all three disciplines. Three sets of homework, three sets of practical write-ups, and three bodies of content are competing for the same evening — and in this community that evening frequently starts after 16:40 and has dinner, Arabic homework and a tired fourteen-year-old in it as well.

That is why a generic weekly science hour so often fails here. It is not the teaching; it is that the hour was placed without reference to what else is in the evening or to what kind of science work the student can actually do at that point. Biology recall at 19:30 is fine. A physics problem-solving session at 19:30, after fifty minutes on Al Khail Road, measures fatigue.

IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses — home visits are a service we run only in India — and there is no UAE office or centre. Serena students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which means the slot is a scheduling choice rather than a constraint imposed by somebody's route. That is the practical advantage in a community where arrival times differ by forty minutes between neighbours.

This page therefore builds the week rather than selling the hour. What each discipline needs and when it can be taught. How practical catch-up collides with the commute. How to put together a revision week across three disciplines without doing everything badly. Which discipline deserves the best slot, which is a diagnosis rather than a preference. And the administrative facts — route, board, practical arrangements, series — that shape the whole year.

Every figure names its source. Where a decision depends on your child's specific entry, the answer sits in the school's entry statement rather than on any page, this one included. For scale, Dubai's private sector runs 227 schools teaching 17 curricula to 387,441 students, with UK curricula accounting for 37 per cent of enrolment, per Dubai Media Office figures for 2024-25. That variety is why two Serena neighbours on the same street can be sitting different science routes with different practical arrangements, and why a recommendation that suited one household may not transfer to the next.

At a glance

  • Most IGCSE students carry three sciences competing for one evening
  • Serena arrival times range from 15:45 to 16:40 by school cluster
  • Biology recall survives a late slot; physics problem-solving does not
  • Practical write-ups are the homework families forget to schedule
  • Teaching is live online one-to-one; no UAE home visits are offered

What the science week has to carry changes with the route, because the number of grades at stake and the volume of content differ.

SEPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences

Three subjects, three grades, three sets of papers. Cambridge codes 0610, 0620 and 0625; Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. The heaviest content load in the timetable, and the route where a weak discipline damages only its own grade — which means the week can legitimately prioritise one science over the others.

Dubai schools differ in whether separate sciences are offered to all students or by recommendation. For a Serena family on the long commute, three separate sciences plus Arabic and Islamic Education is a genuinely full week, and the realistic plan supports one discipline properly rather than all three thinly.

COORDAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Coordinated Sciences, double award

Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SD0, covering all three disciplines and awarding two grades. Content is reduced relative to separate sciences but all three disciplines are examined in the same papers, so the weakest one sets the ceiling. The scheduling consequence is that the best slot of the week should go to that discipline.

This is the most common route in Dubai British-curriculum schools and the one where evening time is most often misallocated. Families typically spread a weekly hour across all three disciplines when the marked papers show the loss concentrated in one, usually physics.

SINGLEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined or single-award science

Cambridge 0653 or Pearson 4SC0, one grade across all three disciplines with the lightest content load. The right route for a student whose strengths are elsewhere, and the one where exam technique rather than content extension usually produces the grade. Easier to fit into a short evening.

For Ministry of Education British-track equivalency, five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3 are required, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count. A single award contributes one subject to that total where a double award contributes two, which matters at option time in Year 9.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the disciplines and components, each with a note on when in the evening the work can realistically be done and where the marks go.

Physics: electricity and circuits

All routes

The largest reliable loss in UAE cohorts and the discipline most often dragging a coordinated grade. It needs reasoning about change in a connected system, which requires a fresh student — so it belongs in the earliest slot available or at the weekend.

Physics: forces, moments and density

All routes

Errors cluster around unit conversion and taking moments about the wrong point, both of which are procedural and can be drilled in a later slot once the method is understood. Question structures repeat year to year, so practice transfers well.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

Extended and Higher mainly

A fluency problem under time pressure rather than a comprehension problem, which means it needs a student who is alert. Timed calculation practice in a good slot beats re-explanation in a bad one.

Chemistry: qualitative analysis

All routes

Ion and gas tests with expected observation wording. Recall-based and directly examined, which makes it ideal for a late evening slot and one of the most predictable mark sets available in the whole science component.

Chemistry: organic chemistry

All routes

Narrow at IGCSE and rule-governed, so it is the fastest available gain in the chemistry component. Homologous series and the handful of reaction types can be secured in a fortnight of short sessions, including late ones.

Biology: enzymes and transport

All routes

The widest mark spread in the biology component. Marks go to explanation of mechanism rather than description of the observation, which is a command-term habit — correctable with a marked paper at almost any hour of the evening.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

All routes

Punnett square layout and ratio reasoning, which are reliably available marks for a student who practises the layout until it is automatic. Low-cost, high-certainty, and perfectly workable in a tired slot.

Required practical skills

All routes

Assessed through a practical examination or an alternative-to-practical written paper depending on board and entry. Method description, variable control, graph plotting and improvement suggestions are written skills — teachable online and rarely practised deliberately.

Graph and data skills

All routes

Shared across all three disciplines, which makes this the one place where cross-discipline work genuinely pays: one session improves answers in biology, chemistry and physics simultaneously. Needs concentration, so put it early.

Command terms in science

All routes

State, describe, explain, suggest and compare each carry a different expectation. Answering 'explain' with a description is the most common silent loss in the science component, and one session with a marked paper usually ends it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to fit science support into a Serena week, all delivered live online one-to-one or in a small pair, with no travel on either side.

One weekday slot on the weakest discipline

A fixed session on the one discipline the marked papers identify, usually physics, with the content chosen for the time of day. For arrivals by 16:05 that means circuits and problem-solving in the earliest hour; for later arrivals it means recall and marking, with the problem work moved to the weekend.

  • One discipline, identified from marked papers
  • In a coordinated course it lifts the shared grade
  • Content matched to the hour, not just the syllabus
  • Notes after each session naming coverage and set work

Weekend morning for calculation and problem work

For students on the long commute, a Saturday or Sunday morning slot for physics problem-solving, chemistry calculations and graph work, when the student is fresh. The weekday evening then carries the lighter load: marking the week's work, qualitative analysis wording, biology recall.

  • Problem-solving when the student is alert, not at 19:30
  • Weekday evening kept short and used for recall and marking
  • Suits the 40-55 minute Al Barsha return
  • Keeps the weekly commitment realistic across three sciences

Cross-discipline skills block

Three to five sessions on what all three disciplines examine: graph plotting and interpretation, command terms, written practical method, and data questions. The one case where non-discipline-specific work genuinely pays, because a single hour improves answers in biology, chemistry and physics at once.

  • Graphs, command terms, practical method, data questions
  • Improves all three disciplines simultaneously
  • Short, cheap and almost never taught deliberately
  • Works for separate and coordinated routes alike

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Serena

01

What a Serena science week actually has to carry

  • Count what is in the evening already: three disciplines, a write-up, Arabic homework
  • Late arrivals have about two usable hours before new technical work stops paying
  • Deprioritise deliberately: give the best slot to the discipline that decides the grade
  • A tutor who does not ask about the evening is not planning around it

Before scheduling anything, count what is already in the evening. A typical Year 10 or 11 student on a coordinated or separate-science route has homework from three disciplines, a practical write-up in whichever discipline had a laboratory lesson that week, Arabic and Islamic Education work required under KHDA rules, and whatever else the timetable produced. That is the context a tutoring hour has to fit into.

Then subtract the commute. Students at the Dubailand and Sustainable City schools arrive home around 15:45 to 16:05 and have a long usable evening. Students travelling back from the Al Barsha and Jumeirah Park cluster arrive between 16:20 and 16:50, having spent forty to fifty-five minutes in a car after a full school day. The second group has perhaps two usable hours before fatigue makes new technical work unproductive, and three sciences want all of it.

The consequence most families reach by trial and error is that something has to be deprioritised deliberately rather than by accident. The deliberate version is to identify the discipline that matters most — in a coordinated course the weakest one, since it sets the shared grade, and on separate sciences the one the post-16 plan needs — and give it the best slot. The accidental version is to spread a weekly hour evenly and watch all three stay where they were.

That is the whole argument of this page. Not that science needs more hours, but that the hours need placing. A tutor who asks what time your child gets home and what else is in the evening before proposing a slot is doing the part of the job that decides whether the rest of it works.

02

Which science fits which slot

The three disciplines are not equally demanding at the same hour, and that is the most useful scheduling fact available to a family in this community. Matching the work to the slot can double what an hour achieves without changing the tutor or the rate.

Physics is the least forgiving. Problem-solving requires holding several steps in mind, and circuit reasoning in particular — what happens elsewhere when one component changes — collapses in a tired student. Chemistry splits: mole calculations need alertness, while qualitative analysis wording and organic reaction types are recall and pattern, perfectly learnable late. Biology is the most tolerant of all: command-term marking, diagram labelling, genetics layout and data interpretation all work at 19:30.

That produces a clear priority for the best slot in the week. If physics is the weak discipline, it takes the earliest hour, every time. If physics is fine and chemistry calculations are the problem, chemistry takes it. Biology almost never needs the best slot, which is counter-intuitive for families whose child finds biology hardest — the volume of content makes it feel hard while the losses are usually command-term habits.

The table below sets this out alongside the arrival bands. Treat the last column as the useful part: it names the specific work rather than the subject, because 'revise chemistry' is not a plan and 'learn the expected wording for the standard ion tests' is. The same logic applies to the length of each slot: a thirty-minute recall session that happens five evenings a week beats a ninety-minute session that collapses after a fortnight, and for three disciplines the short repeated version is almost always the sustainable one.

03

Practical catch-up, and why it collides with the commute

  • Missed laboratory work is made up at school; ask the department's policy early
  • A catch-up session costs a late pick-up nearby and a whole evening from Al Barsha
  • Practical write-ups are unpredictable load and the usual cause of cancellations
  • Teaching written practical skills properly makes every later write-up faster

Science is the subject group most likely to generate after-school obligations, and in this belt those obligations collide directly with the drive. It is worth planning for rather than discovering.

Missed laboratory work has to be made up at school, because that is where the apparatus and supervision are. For a student at a near Dubailand school a catch-up session after lessons costs a slightly later pick-up. For a student at an Al Barsha school it can mean a second journey or a very late return, which removes the evening entirely. Families on the long commute should ask the department early what the catch-up policy is and whether written alternatives exist for a missed session.

The write-ups are the other half, and they are the homework nobody schedules. A practical report is slower than a problem sheet, it tends to be due within a few days, and it arrives in whichever week the laboratory lesson fell. In a three-discipline week that is unpredictable load, and it is the commonest reason a tutoring slot gets cancelled at short notice in this community.

What helps is making the written practical skills a deliberate part of the plan rather than an incidental. Method description, variable control, tabulation, graph plotting, uncertainty and specific improvements are examined — through a practical examination or an alternative-to-practical paper depending on board and entry — and teaching them properly makes every subsequent write-up faster. Three to five sessions there reduce the ongoing load as well as earning marks.

04

Building a revision week across three disciplines

Revision across three sciences is where most Serena families lose time, because the natural instinct is to rotate evenly and the result is shallow coverage of everything. A better week is uneven on purpose.

The principle is that revision should be organised by question form rather than by chapter, and that the forms differ in how much energy they need. Working timed questions and plotting unfamiliar data require concentration. Learning expected observation wording, practising Punnett squares, and labelling diagrams do not. Marking a paper with the mark scheme sits in between, and is more valuable than almost anything else per minute spent.

A week that works in this community looks roughly like the table below: the demanding forms placed where the student is fresh, the recall forms placed late, and one slot reserved for marking. It is deliberately not three equal science evenings, because three equal evenings produce three partial efforts, and in a coordinated course the shared grade will still be set by the weakest discipline.

One addition that costs nothing: ask the student to keep a single list of lost marks from every piece of marked work, categorised as content, method or command term. By the end of a term that list is a better revision plan than any schedule a tutor can write, because it is specific to them and it is evidence rather than assumption. It also tells you when to stop paying: when the method and command-term entries dry up and only a short content list remains, the expensive part of the work has been done and the rest is the student's own revision.

05

Which discipline deserves the best slot

  • Separate the lost marks by discipline before deciding anything
  • In Dubai cohorts the concentration is most often physics, then chemistry calculations
  • Blank questions mean content; partially right answers mean technique
  • Biology usually does not need the best slot, even when it feels hardest

This is a diagnosis rather than a preference, and it is answerable in ten minutes from a marked paper rather than from a conversation about which subject a student dislikes.

Take the most recent marked paper or mock. On a coordinated route the papers mix the three disciplines, so go through and separate the lost marks by discipline. In our experience of Dubai cohorts, the loss concentrates in physics more often than anywhere else, with chemistry calculations second. Biology losses tend to be distributed and command-term driven rather than concentrated, which is why biology is usually the wrong place to put the best hour even when it feels hardest to the student.

Then check the cause rather than the discipline. Whole questions blank means a content problem, which needs sustained teaching in a good slot. Answers started, partially right, and marked down means a technique problem — and technique work is both cheaper and more portable, since command-term and graph discipline improves all three disciplines at once.

The resulting plan for a typical Serena family on a coordinated route is specific: the weak discipline in the weekend or earliest slot, three sessions of cross-discipline skills work, and nothing scheduled for the two disciplines that were already functioning. That is a lighter week than three science evenings and it aims at the thing that was actually setting the ceiling. It is also easier to sustain through a Dubai year, which matters more than it sounds: the plan that survives mock weeks, practical write-ups and Ramadan is the plan that delivers, and an ambitious three-evening schedule rarely survives any of them.

06

Route and board, confirmed before the timetable

Scheduling well is wasted if the hour is spent on the wrong specification. The school's entry statement names the board, the syllabus code and the tier for every subject, and departments inside one Dubai school sometimes differ, so check discipline by discipline.

Three things follow from the entry statement, and all three change the week. Whether the route is separate, coordinated or single award, which determines how many grades are at stake and therefore whether the week should favour one discipline. Which board, which determines whose past papers are worth the hour. And how practical skills are assessed — a practical examination or an alternative-to-practical written paper — which determines whether the plan should include procedural rehearsal at school or written method drilling at home.

The codes to confirm are Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 for separate biology, chemistry and physics, 0654 for Coordinated Sciences double award and 0653 for Combined Science; and Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 for the separate sciences, 4SD0 for the double award and 4SC0 for the single. Paper structures are revised between specification versions, so confirm against the board's current documents for your child's entry year.

None of those documents should cost anything. Boards publish their specifications and provisional timetables, and any tutor worth paying works from them directly. A provider selling them as a resource pack is charging for free material, which is a useful signal about the rest of the arrangement. The one document to pay attention to instead is your child's own entry statement, which is free, specific, and the only thing that settles what the year actually contains.

Mock season, Ramadan and the science calendar

  • Mock weeks: pause new content, then rebuild the week from the marked scripts
  • Ramadan: later slots, often post-Iftar, and a shift towards recall and marking
  • Practical write-ups arrive unpredictably and are the usual cause of cancellations
  • Online sessions usually move within the week; missed home visits are charged

Three predictable events move a science plan every year in this community, and anticipating them is the difference between adjusting and abandoning.

Mock season fills the evenings, and during it a tutoring slot is better spent on targeted review than on new content across three disciplines. The valuable work comes afterwards: mark the returned scripts properly, separate the lost marks by discipline and by cause, and rebuild the week from what the totals show. Mocks are the most accurate free diagnostic a family gets, and in science they are especially useful because they show which discipline is actually dragging a shared grade.

Ramadan shortens the school day, which changes arrival times and the hours when concentration is available. Slots commonly move later, often post-Iftar, and hold at the new time for the month before returning. Because no commute is involved, it is a diary change rather than a renegotiation. It is also the right period to shift the science week towards recall and marking, since those survive a disrupted routine where calculation practice and new circuit work do not.

The third is the unpredictable practical write-up and the school event that moves at a day's notice. An online session can usually be rescheduled within the same week; a missed in-home visit is a wasted journey and is normally charged in full. Across Year 10 and Year 11 that difference compounds into several hours of teaching either kept or lost, which matters more than a small difference in the hourly rate.

08

Entries, practical arrangements and the second series

The administrative calendar sets the outer limits on any science plan, and for science specifically it includes one item other subjects do not: the practical arrangements.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series for UAE candidates. The February/March series is offered to India only and does not apply to a candidate sitting here, so advice built on a February window belongs to another country. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the exam officer which zone applies.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and in November. Checkable reference points: the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026; and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables for later series which may be revised, so work from the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

For science, ask two extra questions. What practical arrangements apply to your child's entry — practical examination or alternative-to-practical paper — because it changes what the final weeks should contain. And what a resit involves on a coordinated route, since the shared grade means the award rather than a single discipline is re-sat, which is a bigger decision than for a separate science. Both answers come from the exam office, and both are better known before results day than after it.

Serena and the communities on the same science evening

Science routes differ by school rather than by neighbourhood, but arrival times differ by community. These are Serena's immediate comparisons.

Serena

Bella Casa and Casa Viva clusters off Al Qudra Road. Fibre throughout, which matters for science sessions where live graphing and data work are shared on screen. Arrival times vary by forty minutes between households depending on the school.

Villanova

Adjacent, same travel band, nearly identical school intake. Pair sessions between Villanova and Serena students on the same route and board work well for content and technique, and nobody has to drive for them to happen.

Mudon

Slightly closer in and on much the same bus network. Households here often run two science routes at once because siblings attend different schools, which makes a single shared arrangement impractical.

Remraam

Furthest out, with the latest arrivals in this group. Science planning here benefits most from the weekend-plus-short-weekday pattern, because physics and chemistry calculation work does not survive a 19:30 start.

Arabian Ranches 3

Closer to the Ranches schools with earlier arrivals, so the demanding disciplines can be taught before dinner. Families here can compare notes with Serena neighbours and find the same tutor offering very different slots.

Town Square and Motor City

Where group science classes are sold, with monthly packages advertised in this market from around AED 799 for eight sessions. Counted properly, a visit costs around two hours of household time from Serena.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Serena

Dubailand, Motor City and Arabian Ranches

The nearest cluster, with bus returns to Serena typically between 15:45 and 16:20. That supports a 16:30 start, which is the best science slot available in this community and is frequently spent on homework supervision instead of on physics.

  • GEMS Metropole School, Motor City
  • Victory Heights Primary School
  • Jebel Ali School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches
  • Ranches Primary School
  • South View School
  • GEMS FirstPoint School

Al Barsha, Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah South

Larger British-curriculum schools running IGCSE at sixteen, with a 40 to 55 minute afternoon return to Serena. Students travelling here need the demanding science work placed at the weekend rather than squeezed into a weekday evening.

  • Dubai British School, Jumeirah Park
  • Safa Community School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School, Dubai

Schools are named as local context for board mix and commutes only; no affiliation, endorsement, partnership or client relationship with any named school or group is implied or held.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the route, the codes and the arrival time

The entry statement gives the route and codes; the arrival time decides the week. With both, we can say which discipline should take the best slot and whether the demanding work belongs at the weekend rather than reciting the hours we happen to have free.

  2. 02

Diagnosis by discipline, from marked papers

We separate the lost marks by discipline and by cause before proposing a plan, because on a coordinated route the weakest discipline sets the shared grade and support aimed elsewhere maintains what already worked.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

A real lesson with the person who would continue, no card required, built around the marked work rather than a placement test. It ends with a named discipline, a named cause and a session count, and if the fit is wrong we match again.

  4. 04

A week, not just an hour

The plan names the slot, what goes in it, and what the student does alone in the lighter slots — recall, labelling, the lost-marks list. For late arrivals it includes a weekend session for problem work, because a 19:30 physics hour in this community is not a plan.

  5. 05

Adjusted for mocks, practicals and Ramadan

Mock scripts rebuild the plan, practical write-ups are expected rather than treated as surprises, and slots move later during Ramadan and back afterwards. Each session produces notes naming what was covered and what was set.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The slot matched to the discipline

Physics problem-solving needs a fresh student; chemistry observation wording and biology recall do not. Placing the work by energy rather than by syllabus order roughly doubles what the same hour achieves, and it costs nothing to do.

One discipline, not three

On coordinated and single-award routes the weakest discipline sets the shared grade, so the best slot and the paid hour should both go there. Spreading a weekly hour evenly across three sciences produces three partial efforts and leaves the ceiling untouched.

Practical load planned, not ignored

Write-ups arrive unpredictably and laboratory catch-up can cost a whole evening on the Al Barsha run. We expect both, and we teach the written practical skills deliberately, which earns marks and makes every subsequent write-up faster.

Route and board confirmed first

Cambridge 0654 and Pearson 4SD0 are not interchangeable, and separate-science codes differ again. Confirming the specification and the practical assessment route from the entry statement prevents weeks of practice on the wrong papers.

Claims and figures you can check

Board documents are free and should be linked rather than resold, every AED figure here names its publisher, and there is no UAE office, no regulator approval, no named school as a client, and no home visits anywhere in the country.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Serena: your questions answered

How do I fit three sciences into a Serena evening?+

Unevenly, and on purpose. Count what is already there: homework from three disciplines, a practical write-up in whichever one had a laboratory lesson, and Arabic and Islamic Education work. Then place the demanding work where the student is fresh — physics problem-solving and chemistry calculations — and the recall work late: observation wording, definitions, Punnett squares, diagram labelling. For a student arriving home after 16:25, the demanding work realistically belongs at the weekend rather than in a weekday evening.

Which science should get the best slot in the week?+

The one the marked papers show as the concentration of lost marks, which in Dubai cohorts is most often physics and second most often chemistry calculations. On a coordinated or single-award route that discipline sets the shared grade, so it earns the best hour. Biology usually does not, even when the student finds it hardest: its content volume makes it feel heavy while its losses are typically command-term habits, which can be fixed at almost any hour with a marked paper.

Can physics really not be taught at 19:30?+

It can be taught; it is poorly learned. Physics problem-solving requires holding several steps in mind at once, and circuit reasoning — what happens elsewhere in the circuit when one component changes — is exactly the kind of work that collapses in a tired student. Worse, a timed physics attempt at that hour produces a misleading diagnosis as well as a bad score, and the next few sessions then get aimed at a problem the student does not have. Move the problem work; keep the recall work.

What happens when my child misses a science practical?+

It has to be made up at school, because that is where the apparatus and supervision are, and the cost to your week depends entirely on the commute. For a near Dubailand school it is a later pick-up. For a child at an Al Barsha school it can mean a second journey or a very late return, which removes the evening. Ask the science department early what the catch-up policy is and whether a written alternative exists for a missed session — the answer varies by school.

If the tutoring is online, who supervises the laboratory work?+

The school does, in its own laboratory, with its own equipment and technician. That does not change with online tutoring and nobody should imply otherwise. What online teaching covers is the written element of practical assessment, which is where most practical marks sit: describing a method precisely, identifying and controlling variables, tabulating, plotting and interpreting graphs, discussing uncertainty and suggesting specific improvements. Depending on board and entry that is examined through a practical examination or an alternative-to-practical paper.

How should the science week change during mock season?+

Stop teaching new content across three disciplines and use the slot for targeted review, because mock weeks have already filled the evenings. The valuable work comes after: mark the returned scripts, separate every lost mark by discipline and by cause — content, method or command term — and rebuild the week from the totals. In science this is especially useful, because it finally shows which discipline is dragging a shared grade rather than leaving the family to guess.

Is a practical write-up the reason sessions keep getting cancelled?+

Frequently, yes. A report is slower than a problem sheet, it tends to be due within a few days, and it lands in whichever week the laboratory lesson fell, so the load is unpredictable. Two things help. Expect it in the plan rather than treating it as a surprise, and teach the written practical skills properly early — three to five sessions on method, variables, tabulation, graphs and improvements both earns marks and makes every later write-up faster.

Should we support all three sciences or just one?+

On a coordinated or single-award route, one: the discipline the marked papers identify, because all three feed one or two shared grades and the weakest sets the ceiling. On separate sciences each grade stands alone, so choose by which subject the post-16 plan needs. In both cases, a short cross-discipline block on graphs and command terms is worth adding, because that work improves answers in biology, chemistry and physics simultaneously for a handful of sessions.

Do session times change during Ramadan for science students?+

Usually. Dubai schools shorten the day, which moves arrival times and shifts the hours when concentration is available, so slots commonly move later and often to post-Iftar before returning afterwards. Because no commute is involved it is a diary adjustment rather than a renegotiation. It is also the right month to move the science week towards recall and marking, since observation wording and definitions survive a disrupted routine where new circuit work and calculation practice do not.

How do I know which science route and board my child is on?+

Ask the exam office for the entry statement, which names the board, the syllabus code and the tier for every subject. The codes to look for are Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 for separate sciences, 0654 for Coordinated Sciences and 0653 for Combined, or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, 4SD0 and 4SC0. Departments inside one Dubai school sometimes use different boards, so check discipline by discipline rather than assuming the school uses one throughout.

Will a science tutor come to our house in Serena?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram teaches UAE students one-to-one over live video, there is no IB Gram office or centre in the country, and home visits are a service we run only in India. Independent in-home science tutors do work in this belt at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Serena at the upper end because the round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes. The advantage of online here is scheduling: the slot can follow your child's arrival rather than a tutor's route.

What does science tutoring cost for a Serena family?+

A qualified subject tutor teaching online runs roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Budget online tuition is AED 33 to 65, per Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel, at the upper end for this address. Group classes are advertised in monthly packages from around AED 799 for eight sessions, which also costs about two hours of household time per visit from Serena.

Can my two children share a science tutor to save time?+

They can share a tutor; they rarely share a slot. Siblings in this belt are often on different routes or boards and on different bus routes with arrival times forty minutes apart, so staggered sessions work better — commonly the exam-year student in the better slot and the younger child later. A genuine pair session needs the same route, board and a similar starting point, which is more often found between neighbouring households in Serena, Villanova and Mudon than between siblings.

Is a permit needed to tutor science privately in Serena?+

Yes, as for any private tutoring in the UAE. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, applied for through MoHRE's Private Tutor Licensing service with a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Because it is free, no tutor should pass on a licensing cost, and no fine schedule is published.

Place the hours before you buy them

For science in this community the scheduling decision matters as much as the tutor. Tell us the route and syllabus codes from the entry statement, the time your child actually gets home, and which discipline the last marked paper shows as the problem. You will get a proposed week — which science goes in the best slot, what the student does alone in the lighter ones, and whether the problem work belongs at the weekend — plus a free first lesson with the tutor who would continue. Teaching is live, one-to-one and online; the laboratory stays at school.
