IB Physics Tutor in Serena

Hiring an IB physics tutor in Serena is worth doing carefully, because physics is the subject where a generalist is least able to hide. This page gives the questions that identify a real physics teacher: the Higher Level content, uncertainty handling, command terms and the mathematical demand topic by topic. IB Gram matches on level and teaches live online, one-to-one.

  • Matched to Higher or Standard Level, with the difference named
  • Uncertainty propagation taught as the examinable skill it is
  • Command terms drilled: state, describe, explain, derive, discuss

IB & IGCSE in Serena

Physics is where a generalist tutor cannot hide

Serena sits off Al Qudra Road at the outer edge of the Dubailand belt, among clusters including Bella Casa and Casa Viva, with Mudon, Villanova and Remraam nearby. Families here asking whether anyone nearby knows the physics syllabus are asking the right question in the wrong form. The useful question is whether a given tutor knows this course, at this level, under the current guide — and that has nothing to do with distance.

Physics is the subject where the gap between a competent graduate and a physics teacher shows fastest. A mathematician can solve the problems and will not know that the examiner wants a derivation where the student wrote a description. An engineer will handle the content and may never have taught uncertainty propagation, which is examined and almost never taught. Both will teach a student who then loses the same marks they were losing before.

There is a second trap specific to this subject: the mathematical demand. Physics at Diploma level assumes fluent algebraic rearrangement, confident standard form, comfort with gradients and, in places, small-angle approximations and logarithmic scales. A student paired with Mathematics Applications and Interpretation often looks careless in physics when they are carrying arithmetic overload, and a tutor who does not separate the two diagnoses the wrong problem.

IB Gram matches on the named level and on the component the marked papers point at, and teaches live online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. No tutor travels to a UAE address — home visits are a service we run only in India — and there is no IB Gram office or centre in the country. For physics specifically the online format gives up little: the subject is worked on a page and a graph, and simulations let a student change a parameter and watch the consequence, which is the fastest route into field and circuit reasoning.

What follows is the detail you need to interrogate any physics tutor. The questions that identify real course knowledge. What the Higher Level content actually adds, theme by theme. Uncertainties, properly explained. The command terms that decide marks. The experimental programme and what it requires. The mathematical demand by topic. And where availability and price genuinely sit in this market.

One standing note: we publish no IB exam or results dates, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and a date a family plans around must be checkable. UAE schools sit the May session. Specification versions are also revised, so confirm paper durations, weightings and practical hours for your child's cohort with the school rather than treating any page as final, this one included. What does not change between guides is the structure of the problem: five themes with unequal Higher Level extensions, an examined data-analysis skill nobody teaches, command terms that decide marks before the physics is read, and an investigation whose ceiling is set by its research question.

At a glance

  • Physics rewards derivation and reasoning, which is where generalists lose marks for students
  • Uncertainty propagation is examined and almost never taught deliberately
  • The mathematical demand is a separate diagnosis from the physics
  • Higher Level adds content inside all five themes, not a sixth theme
  • Teaching is live online one-to-one; no UAE home visits are offered
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics requests from this community arrive at three points, and the right first move differs at each.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences

Four criteria marked 0 to 8: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Students lose marks in the design and processing criteria while their content knowledge is fine, so the fix is reading criterion wording with the task sheet rather than revising more topics.

MYP provision in the Dubailand belt is thinner than Diploma provision, so Serena students on this track often travel further to school. The design and processing tasks need uninterrupted thinking time, which makes them the work most worth a weekend morning rather than a late weekday slot.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma year one

Themes are introduced, the experimental programme begins, and the Scientific Investigation is chosen. The most valuable DP1 work is foundational: mathematical technique in physics, uncertainty handling, and the habit of answering the command term asked. Students who secure those arrive in DP2 needing content teaching rather than repair.

In most Dubai schools the physics investigation deadline lands in the same few weeks as two or three other internal assessments, and the Higher Level extensions in fields arrive around the same time. That collision is predictable, which means it can be planned for rather than survived.

DP2Ages 17-19 · Year 13

Diploma year two

Content finishes and the grade is decided by whether knowledge converts into marks. Sessions are past-paper driven: timed extended-response questions marked strictly, with every lost mark categorised as content, reasoning or command-term misreading. The data-analysis component gets its own time rather than being assumed.

UAE schools sit the May session, and we publish no IB dates because they cannot be verified from ibo.org. The planning anchors are the school's mock week and its internal deadlines, both of which the IB coordinator can provide in writing at the start of DP2.

What physics is required for

Engineering, physical sciences, architecture and medical-physics routes expect physics, commonly at Higher Level and commonly alongside Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. The pairing matters: Higher Level physics with Applications and Interpretation is workable but needs the mathematical strand supported explicitly from the first term.

Requirements vary by university and programme, so read the specific programme pages rather than relying on a general rule, and treat no tutoring as a requirement for admission. For Ministry of Education equivalency the British-track rules are published while no IB points threshold has been read on moe.gov.ae.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This page is about physics, so these are the themes and components, each with the specific skill it examines and the error that costs marks.

Theme A: Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces, momentum and energy, with rotational and relativistic extensions at Higher Level. Familiar enough to breed false confidence: students solve standard questions and then fail to justify which relationship applies and why, which is what the harder questions ask.

Theme B: The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal physics, gas laws and current electricity. Circuits are the largest reliable loss in UAE cohorts, because students know the rules and cannot reason about what happens elsewhere in the circuit when one component changes.

Theme C: Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Wave models, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect, with further interference work at Higher Level. The commonest loss is description without cause: stating that a pattern appears without identifying the path difference or phase relationship producing it.

Theme D: Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields including induction, and the heaviest Higher Level extensions. Sign conventions in potential energy problems and field-line reasoning are where Higher Level marks disappear in volume, usually because the theme was reached late.

Theme E: Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Atomic structure, decay, fission, fusion and quantum phenomena at Higher Level. Conceptually unfamiliar and computationally tidy, which makes it the most reliable late-stage gain for a student who postponed it.

Uncertainties and error analysis

SL and HL

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and uncertainty in a gradient. Threaded through the data-analysis component and the investigation, examined consistently, and the single most under-taught skill in the course.

Data analysis and graphing

SL and HL

Plotting, linearising a relationship, reading a gradient and drawing a supported conclusion from unseen data. Students who have never plotted error bars by hand or found a gradient uncertainty lose these marks regardless of how well they know the themes.

Extended response technique

SL and HL

Multi-part questions that build, carrying the largest share of the grade. Marks go missing to description where derivation was required, to abandoned part-answers, and to units dropped in the final line after correct physics throughout.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL

An individual investigation of up to 3,000 words worth 20 per cent, marked on four criteria of six marks each. Research design sets the ceiling: a question with no measurable, controllable relationship cannot score on the later criteria however carefully it is written up.

The experimental programme

SL and HL

A required number of practical hours across the course, including a collaborative sciences project, delivered and supervised by the school. Confirm the hours and arrangements with your child's teacher, since they are a school-managed requirement rather than something a tutor provides.

Mathematical technique in physics

SL and HL

Rearranging before substituting, standard form, gradients, small-angle approximations and reading logarithmic scales. For students taking Mathematics Applications and Interpretation this strand usually needs explicit support rather than assumption.

Command terms

SL and HL

State, describe, explain, deduce, derive, discuss and justify each carry a distinct expectation and mark ceiling. A student answering 'explain' with a description has lost the marks before the physics is read, and the fix is one session with a marked paper.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of physics support, all delivered live online one-to-one or in a small pair, with no travel on either side.

Weekly one-to-one on a named level

A fixed slot with a tutor matched to Higher or Standard Level, alternating theme content with paper technique. Ninety minutes suits Higher Level, because a single extended-response question with a proper review of the reasoning takes most of an hour. Uncertainty work and graphing are scheduled deliberately rather than mentioned in passing.

  • Level confirmed before the first lesson
  • Uncertainties and graphing given their own time
  • Marked to the mark scheme: units, command terms, derivations
  • Notes after each session naming topics and set work

Investigation coaching

Three to six sessions across the drafting period: testing whether a research question has a measurable, controllable relationship, reading the four criteria properly, and giving feedback on the student's own draft and processed data. The experiment, the data and the writing stay the student's, and the school supervisor remains in charge.

  • Research design tested before weeks are spent
  • Four criteria explained with their six-mark allocations
  • Feedback on the student's draft; no data or text supplied
  • Timed to the school's internal deadline

Theme or component block

Six to ten sessions aimed at a theme that has failed twice — usually fields or circuits — or at the data-analysis component. Every question marked strictly with losses categorised as content, reasoning or command-term misreading. For students whose knowledge is adequate and whose marks are not, this is the most efficient physics tuition available.

  • Commonest targets: Theme D fields, Theme B circuits, data analysis
  • Losses categorised and attacked in order of volume
  • Defined session count with a finish date
  • Repeatable before mocks and before the May session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Serena

01

Four questions that identify a physics teacher

  • What does Higher Level add, and where? Content inside all five themes
  • How are uncertainties handled, including the uncertainty in a gradient?
  • What separates 'describe', 'explain' and 'derive' in a mark scheme?
  • What will you do with the student's own experimental data? Nothing

These work on a neighbour's recommendation, an agency and on us, and they take two minutes. They are deliberately not about years of experience, because experience in a superseded version of the course can mislead a student confidently.

First: what does Higher Level add, and where? The answer is content inside all five themes rather than a sixth theme, with the heaviest extensions in fields and in Theme A, and longer papers. A tutor who says Higher Level is 'the same with harder questions' has not taught it. Second: how do you handle uncertainties? A physics teacher will talk about absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation and the uncertainty in a gradient. A generalist will say they cover errors.

Third: what is the difference between 'describe', 'explain' and 'derive' in a mark scheme? The answer should be immediate and specific, because it is the single largest source of lost marks in the subject. Fourth: what do you do with the student's experimental data in investigation support? The correct answer is nothing: they look at it, question it and comment on the processing, and the student produces and processes it.

A fifth question is worth asking if the student takes Applications and Interpretation for mathematics: how will you handle the mathematical demand? A physics teacher who has taught that combination will name the specific pressure points — rearrangement speed, standard form, logarithmic scales — and plan explicit work on them. One who has not will treat careless arithmetic as inattention and keep teaching physics.

02

Higher Level versus Standard Level, theme by theme

The most common misconception among parents is that Higher Level is the same course with harder examinations. It is not: there is additional content, it is distributed unevenly across the themes, and the papers are longer. Knowing where the extra material sits changes when it should be taught.

The extensions are heaviest in Theme A and Theme D. In Theme A the additional work pushes into rotational dynamics and relativistic ideas; in Theme D it deepens field reasoning and induction. Theme E adds quantum material that is conceptually unfamiliar. Themes B and C extend less dramatically. The practical consequence is that a Higher Level student who treats all five themes as equal workloads will under-prepare the two that carry the most new material.

The timing problem follows from that. Fields is both the hardest theme and one of the latest to be taught in many schemes of work, which means the heaviest Higher Level extension arrives in DP2 at the same time as the Scientific Investigation deadline. That collision is predictable and therefore avoidable: front-loading field reasoning in DP1, even informally, removes the worst of it.

Confirm the exact arrangement for your child's cohort with the school, since specification versions are revised. What does not change is the shape of the problem: unequal extensions, a late-arriving hard theme, and an internal assessment deadline in the same window. The question to put to a school, early in DP1, is simply when fields is scheduled - and if the answer is the second half of DP2, that is worth knowing a year in advance rather than discovering it alongside the investigation.

WHERE HIGHER LEVEL ADDS WEIGHT, AND WHEN TO TEACH IT
ThemeStandard Level coreWhat Higher Level addsDifficulty for most studentsWhen to front-load
A: Space, time and motionKinematics, forces, momentum, energyRotational and relativistic extensionsModerate, but deceptively familiarMid DP1
B: The particulate nature of matterThermal physics, gas laws, circuitsDeeper circuit and thermal analysisCircuits are the largest reliable lossEarly DP1
C: Wave behaviourWaves, superposition, DopplerFurther interference and wave analysisLanguage-sensitive rather than hardDP1 or DP2
D: FieldsGravitational, electric, magnetic fieldsSubstantial field and induction depthHardest theme in the courseAs early as the school allows
E: Nuclear and quantum physicsAtomic structure, decay, fission, fusionQuantum phenomenaUnfamiliar but computationally tidySafe to leave later
03

Uncertainties: the skill nobody teaches

  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty, and converting between them
  • Propagation: add absolutes for sums, add percentages for products, multiply by the power
  • Error bars drawn by hand, and gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines
  • Quote uncertainty to one significant figure and match the value's precision to it

If a Serena family buys only three physics sessions, this is what they should buy. Uncertainty handling is examined in the data-analysis component and throughout the Scientific Investigation, it appears in extended response, and almost no student has been taught it properly. The marks are available to anyone who learns it, which is unusual in a subject this competitive.

What it actually involves is finite and learnable. Absolute uncertainty on a single reading, and why it is half the smallest division only sometimes. Percentage uncertainty, and when to convert between the two. Propagation: adding absolute uncertainties when quantities are added or subtracted, adding percentage uncertainties when they are multiplied or divided, and multiplying the percentage by the power when a quantity is raised. Quoting an uncertainty to one significant figure and matching the precision of the value to it.

Then the graphical work, which is where investigation marks live. Plotting error bars by hand. Drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines and using them to estimate the uncertainty in a gradient. Understanding that a linearised plot exists so that a gradient can be interpreted physically, not because graphs must be straight. Students who have done this once on paper handle it; students who have only seen it in a slide do not.

The reason this is under-taught is not negligence. It is slow to teach, it looks like arithmetic rather than physics, and it rarely features in a textbook chapter that a class is working through. That is exactly why it is efficient to buy from outside: three sessions on it typically shows up in a mock more clearly than three sessions on any single theme.

04

Command terms, and the marks they decide

Physics mark schemes are written against command terms, and students read them as synonyms. That misreading is the largest single category of lost marks we see in marked papers from Dubai cohorts, and it is correctable in a single session.

'State' wants a fact with no justification, so time spent explaining is wasted. 'Describe' wants what happens without the why. 'Explain' wants the mechanism or reason, and a description earns nothing. 'Deduce' wants a conclusion reached from given information. 'Derive' wants the algebra from a starting relationship to the required result, and quoting the result is worth nothing at all. 'Discuss' wants both sides or a balanced consideration. 'Justify' wants a reason attached to a choice.

The diagnostic exercise is simple and worth doing at home before any tutoring is bought. Take the student's last marked paper, go through every question where marks were lost, and mark each loss as content, arithmetic, or command term. In most mid-grade papers from this belt the command-term column is larger than families expect, and it is the cheapest of the three to fix.

This is also why strict marking matters more in physics than almost anywhere else. A tutor who ticks answers that are physically correct but do not do what the command term asked is confirming the habit that is costing the marks. Work should be marked the way an examiner marks it — command term, units, significant figures, derivation shown — rather than assessed for whether the student understood.

COMMAND TERMS IN PHYSICS - WHAT EACH REQUIRES AND THE TYPICAL LOSS
Command termWhat it requiresWhat earns nothingTypical loss per paper
StateA fact, no justification neededA paragraph of explanationTime rather than marks

05

The experimental programme and the investigation

  • Apparatus work and the practical hours are school-managed; confirm them with the teacher
  • Research design, processing, conclusion and evaluation are where most marks sit
  • No online session substitutes for handling equipment, and nobody should claim it does
  • A tutor questions and comments; the student designs, measures, processes and writes

Physics carries a required practical element delivered by the school, including an individual Scientific Investigation and a collaborative project element. Confirm the exact hours and arrangements with your child's teacher, because they are school-managed and vary in how they are scheduled, but the principle is fixed: the apparatus work happens in the school laboratory, under the school's supervision.

That boundary is worth stating plainly because it is often fudged in advertising. No online tutor can substitute for handling apparatus, and for the Scientific Investigation the student's own experimental work is a requirement rather than a preference. Anyone implying that a screen replaces the laboratory is overselling, and a family should treat that as a warning about everything else they claim.

What is genuinely teachable away from the bench is most of where the marks are. Research design: whether the question has a variable the student can change, a quantity they can measure with the school's equipment, and the other variables controllable. Data analysis: processing with correct uncertainties, plotting something interpretable, extracting a gradient and its uncertainty. Conclusion: a result the measurements support rather than the one the textbook predicts. Evaluation: specific prioritised weaknesses with realistic improvements, not generic remarks about human error.

The boundary on help is the same as elsewhere in the Diploma and firmer than many families expect. A tutor may explain criteria, test a research question, question reasoning and comment on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the investigation, produce or process the data, write or rewrite text, or supply a previous student's report. Those are passing off another person's work as the student's own, which risks the Diploma rather than one grade.

06

The mathematical demand, topic by topic

Physics failures are frequently mathematics failures wearing a physics costume, and separating the two is the most useful diagnostic move available in the first session. A student who can explain the physics verbally and cannot execute the algebra needs different help from one who cannot explain it.

The demands are specific rather than general. Kinematics needs confident rearrangement and quadratic solution. Circuits need ratio reasoning and simultaneous thinking about series and parallel combinations. Fields need inverse-square manipulation and careful sign handling. Waves need trigonometric relationships and, in places, small-angle approximation. Nuclear decay needs logarithms and exponential reasoning. Data analysis needs gradients, linearisation and percentage work.

That is why the mathematics course a student takes alongside physics matters. Analysis and Approaches builds the rearrangement fluency and calculus habits physics assumes. Applications and Interpretation builds statistical and modelling strength instead, which is valuable and different. A Higher Level physics student on Applications and Interpretation is not in the wrong place, but the mathematical strand needs explicit support from the first term rather than discovery in a mock.

The table below maps the demand so a family can see which gaps to test for. In practice the test is quick: give the student a rearrangement exercise with no physics in it and see what happens. If the algebra is slow, the physics sessions should start there, because every subsequent topic will be carried on top of it. Two or three sessions of rearrangement and standard-form work, with no physics attached, is an unglamorous purchase that changes the return on everything bought afterwards.

Tools, graphs and simulations: what helps and what does not

  • The student plots and linearises; watching someone else do it teaches recognition
  • Build uncertainty columns in a spreadsheet to learn propagation properly
  • With simulations, predict before releasing — the prediction is the learning
  • Keep paper and pencil in the room; the thinking still happens by hand

Physics has more usable technology than any other Diploma subject, and most of it is free. Used well it accelerates exactly the reasoning students find hardest; used badly it replaces thinking with watching.

What helps: a graphing tool in which the student plots their own data and manipulates the axes, because linearising a relationship becomes concrete rather than abstract. A spreadsheet in which they build the uncertainty columns themselves, which teaches propagation faster than any explanation. And interactive simulations of fields and circuits, where changing one parameter and predicting the consequence before releasing it is genuinely the fastest route into the reasoning the harder questions demand.

What does not help: watching a simulation run while a tutor narrates it. The learning is in the prediction, not the animation. The same applies to video explanations of worked examples, which feel productive and produce recognition rather than capability. A student who has watched someone derive a result can usually follow it and cannot reproduce it, which is a distinction that shows up immediately in a timed paper.

The practical point for an online arrangement is that these tools work better on a shared screen than they do in a dining room. Both people can manipulate the graph, both keep the annotated file, and the spreadsheet the student built in week three is still there in week ten. What the room needs is paper and pencil, because the useful physics thinking still happens by hand before it is shown to the camera.

Availability and cost for physics in this belt

  • Specialist band for Higher Level physics: AED 200-450+ (TutorChase 270; Bestimate 200-450+)
  • Qualified subject tutor at AED 150-300 is adequate for Standard Level content
  • In-home AED 180-500 with travel, at the upper end for Serena; no UAE home visits from us
  • Higher Level physics is tight before mocks — ask three to four weeks ahead

Physics sits in the specialist band of the Dubai market and in the tight half on availability, which is the opposite of what families assume when they see how many tutors advertise science.

On price, published figures: an IB specialist teaching online is AED 200 to 450 or more an hour, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table at AED 200 to 450+. A qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 can serve Standard Level content competently. Budget online tuition at AED 33 to 65 — Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 — buys supervision, which in physics is worth less than in most subjects because what a struggling student needs is their reasoning interrogated.

In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, per Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, with Serena at the upper end because the round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes. For physics the premium buys presence and little else: the subject's working surface transfers well to a shared screen, and the simulation and graphing work is better there. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE in any case, since that is an India-only service.

On availability, we would rather state it than let a family discover it: Higher Level physics is among the tightest categories we staff, particularly in the weeks before mocks when every Diploma family in Dubai wants the same thing. Where we cannot cover a request in your window, you get the slots that exist, an honest estimate, or a recommendation to look elsewhere. A general science tutor is not placed into a Higher Level fields request.

Where we tutor

Serena and the physics cohort around it

Diploma physics students in this belt are spread thinly across a handful of IB schools, which is precisely why level-matching matters more than distance.

Serena

Bella Casa and Casa Viva clusters off Al Qudra Road. Fibre throughout, which matters for physics because live graphing and simulation work need a stable connection. Most Diploma students here travel out of the belt for school.

Villanova

Adjacent, same travel band and nearly identical intake. Pair sessions between Villanova and Serena students at the same level work particularly well in physics, where two students reasoning aloud about a circuit outperforms one.

Mudon

A few minutes closer in and on much the same bus network. Households here often have one child in MYP Sciences and one in Diploma physics, which are different jobs needing different tutors rather than one arrangement.

Remraam

Furthest out, with the latest arrivals home. For physics this matters more than in most subjects: derivation work needs a fresh student, so weekend slots do more here than a late weekday hour.

Arabian Ranches 3

Closer to the Ranches schools and with earlier arrivals, which means new theme work can realistically happen before dinner rather than after it.

Town Square

Apartment-dense and skewed towards MYP and IGCSE rather than the Diploma. The practical constraint for physics sessions is a quiet surface and room for paper, since the useful working still happens by hand.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Serena

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and two marked papers

Higher or Standard Level, the school and year group, and photographs of two marked papers. The papers say more in five minutes than a conversation does in thirty, because students cannot see their own command-term and uncertainty errors from the inside.

  2. 02

Matched to the level, with the maths demand checked

Tutors are matched to Higher or Standard Level rather than to science generally, and we ask which mathematics course the student takes. A Higher Level physics student on Applications and Interpretation usually needs explicit mathematical technique work, and saying so early prevents a term of misdiagnosis.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

A real lesson with the person who would continue, no card required. It separates the three causes — content, mathematics, command-term misreading — and ends with a session count. If the pace or style does not suit your child, say so and we match again.

  4. 04

Uncertainties and data analysis scheduled, not assumed

The plan gives explicit time to uncertainty propagation and graph work, because they are examined and almost never taught deliberately. At Higher Level, field reasoning is front-loaded where the school's scheme of work allows, to avoid the DP2 collision with the investigation deadline.

  5. 05

    Marked strictly, reviewed each term

Work is marked the way an examiner marks it: command term, units, significant figures, derivation shown. Each term the plan is reviewed against marked evidence, and when a component stops needing weekly support we say so rather than letting the slot run.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the level, with the extensions named

Higher Level adds content inside all five themes rather than a sixth theme, weighted towards fields and Theme A. A tutor who can say where the extra material sits teaches it in the right order; one who treats Higher Level as harder questions does not.

Uncertainties taught properly

Propagation rules, error bars drawn by hand and gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines. It is examined in the data-analysis component and throughout the investigation, and it is the most under-taught skill in the course, which makes it the best three sessions a physics family can buy.

Command terms fixed with a marked paper

Describe, explain, deduce, derive, discuss and justify each demand something specific, and misreading them is the largest category of lost marks we see. One session with the student's own marked paper usually ends a habit that has been costing marks for a year.

The mathematics separated from the physics

Students who can explain the physics and cannot execute the algebra need different help from those who cannot explain it. We test the rearrangement speed directly rather than treating careless arithmetic as inattention, particularly for students taking Applications and Interpretation.

Honest about the laboratory and about coverage

Apparatus work and the practical hours stay with the school, and we say so. Higher Level physics is among the tightest things we staff, so we offer real slots or tell families to look elsewhere. No UAE office, no regulator approval, and no IB date published, because ibo.org blocks verification.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Serena: your questions answered

What should I ask a physics tutor before hiring them for a Serena student?+

Four things. What does Higher Level add and where — the answer is content inside all five themes, weighted towards fields, not a sixth theme. How do you handle uncertainties, including the uncertainty in a gradient. What separates 'describe', 'explain' and 'derive' in a mark scheme. And what will you do with my child's experimental data for the investigation, where the only correct answer is nothing: look at it, question it, comment on the processing. A physics teacher answers all four immediately; a capable generalist does not.

What exactly does Higher Level physics add over Standard Level?+

Additional content inside all five themes rather than a separate sixth theme, plus longer papers. The extensions are unevenly distributed: heaviest in Theme A, which pushes into rotational and relativistic work, and in Theme D fields, which gains substantial depth in field reasoning and induction. Theme E adds quantum material. Themes B and C extend less. The practical consequence is that a Higher Level student treating all five themes as equal workloads under-prepares the two carrying the most new material.

Why do so many IB physics students lose marks on uncertainties?+

Because it is examined and almost never taught deliberately. It is slow to teach, looks like arithmetic rather than physics, and rarely sits in a textbook chapter a class works through. The content is finite: absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation rules, uncertainty quoted to one significant figure with the value's precision matched, error bars drawn by hand, and gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines. Three sessions on it typically shows up in a mock more clearly than three sessions on any single theme.

Which physics command term costs students the most marks?+

'Explain', because students answer it with a description. 'Describe' wants what happens; 'explain' wants the mechanism or reason, and a description earns nothing. 'Derive' is the other expensive one: it wants the algebra from a stated relationship to the required result, and quoting the result scores nothing at all. The diagnostic exercise costs nothing: take the last marked paper and label each lost mark as content, arithmetic or command term. In most mid-grade papers the command-term column is larger than families expect.

Is Higher Level physics manageable with Maths Applications and Interpretation?+

Yes, with explicit support for the mathematical strand from the first term rather than discovery in a mock. Physics assumes fluent rearrangement, confident standard form, comfort with gradients and, in places, logarithms and small-angle approximations — a profile Analysis and Approaches builds directly. Students in the Applications combination often look careless in physics when they are carrying arithmetic overload. The quick test is to give them a rearrangement exercise with no physics in it and watch the speed.

Which physics theme should be front-loaded?+

Fields, Theme D. It is the hardest theme for most students, it carries the heaviest Higher Level extension, and in many schemes of work it is taught late — which means it collides with the Scientific Investigation deadline in DP2. Front-loading field reasoning in DP1, even informally through simulation work and sign-convention practice, removes the worst of that collision. Circuits in Theme B deserve early attention too, because they are the largest reliable loss in UAE cohorts and respond to question-led teaching.

How does the practical side work if physics tutoring is online?+

The apparatus work and the required practical hours stay with the school, including the individual Scientific Investigation and the collaborative project element — confirm the exact arrangements with your child's teacher, since schools schedule them differently. Online teaching covers research design, processing with correct uncertainties, graphing, conclusions and evaluation, which is where most of the assessed marks sit. Nobody should claim a screen replaces handling equipment, and a provider who does is telling you something about their other claims too.

What may a tutor do with my child's investigation data?+

Look at it, question how it was processed, and comment on whether the conclusion follows from it. Nothing more. A tutor may explain each of the four criteria and their six-mark allocations, test whether the research question has a measurable and controllable relationship, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the investigation, produce or process the data, write or rewrite text, or supply a previous student's report. Those risk the Diploma rather than one grade.

Do simulations actually help with physics, or are they a gimmick?+

They help when the student predicts before releasing. Changing one parameter in a field or circuit simulation and committing to a prediction first is the fastest route into the reasoning the harder questions demand. Watching a simulation run while someone narrates it is close to worthless, as is watching a video of a worked derivation: both produce recognition rather than capability, and the difference shows up immediately in a timed paper. The learning is in the prediction and in doing the plotting yourself.

Is physics harder to teach over video than in person?+

Marginally easier, in practice. The subject's working surface is a page of algebra and a graph, both of which transfer to a shared screen that both people can annotate and that saves the file. Live graphing lets a student linearise their own data and see the consequence, and simulations are better on a shared screen than on a phone at a dining table. What the room needs is paper and pencil, because the useful thinking still happens by hand before it is shown to the camera.

Will an IB physics tutor come to our house in Serena?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram teaches UAE students one-to-one over live video, there is no IB Gram office or centre in the country, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. Independent in-home physics tutors do work in this belt at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Serena at the upper end because the round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes. The premium buys presence rather than better teaching of fields or uncertainty propagation.

What does IB physics tutoring cost around Serena?+

Physics sits in the specialist band, which published Dubai figures put at AED 200 to 450 or more an hour: TutorChase at AED 270, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table at AED 200 to 450+. A qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 is adequate for Standard Level content. Budget supervision at AED 33 to 65 buys less in physics than elsewhere, because what a struggling student needs is their reasoning interrogated. Our rate is quoted after the free trial lesson.

When should a Serena family book Higher Level physics sessions?+

Three to four weeks, and earlier in the run-up to mocks. Higher Level physics is among the tightest categories any provider staffs, partly because the pool of people who have taught it through a cycle is small and partly because demand concentrates in the same few weeks across the whole city. Where we cannot cover a request in the window you want, you will get the slots that genuinely exist, an honest estimate of when the preferred window may open, or a recommendation to look elsewhere.

Can you confirm the May exam dates for physics?+

No, and we would be cautious about any page that does. ibo.org returns errors to automated fetching, so no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and an unverified date is worse than none when a family books travel around it. UAE schools sit the May session. For the window, the investigation upload deadline and your school's own internal dates, ask the IB coordinator — and note that the school's internal deadlines fall weeks earlier and are the ones that actually constrain the plan.

Ask the four questions, send the papers

Physics is the subject where the questions you ask a prospective tutor matter most. What does Higher Level add and where. How are uncertainties handled. What separates describe, explain and derive. And what will you do with my child's data — where the right answer is nothing. Send us the level, the mathematics course your child takes alongside, and two marked papers, and you will get straight answers plus a free first lesson with the tutor who would continue. Teaching is live, one-to-one and online; the laboratory stays at school.
