IB Home Tutor in Serena

An IB home tutor in Serena is priced by the drive as much as by the teaching. Serena sits deep in the Dubailand belt off Al Qudra Road, so a visiting tutor prices forty to sixty minutes each way into the hour. This page shows the AED figures with their sources, and what each option really buys. IB Gram teaches one-to-one, live online, with the first lesson free.

IB & IGCSE in Serena

What an IB home tutor actually costs a Serena household

Serena is a townhouse community off Al Qudra Road, built around clusters including Bella Casa and Casa Viva, sitting between Mudon, Villanova and Remraam at the outer edge of the Dubailand belt. Its position is the single biggest influence on what tutoring costs here, and almost nobody says so out loud. A tutor who drives to Serena spends forty to sixty minutes each way on an ordinary weekday afternoon, and that time is paid for in the hourly rate.

The numbers are published, just not in one place. Market in-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai runs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel — Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table shows AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500. The same qualified tutor teaching online sits at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. The gap is the drive, and in Serena it sits at the top of the AED 50 to 150 range.

That makes the honest question not 'what does a home tutor cost' but 'what is the premium buying'. It buys presence. For a child under about ten who needs an adult in the room, or a student whose particular needs make screen work genuinely harder, presence is worth paying for and the in-home market in this belt exists to serve it. For a sixteen-year-old working on a Chemistry Internal Assessment, it buys a car in the driveway and nothing academic.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE. They are a service we run only in India, and Serena students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We state that in the first screen rather than after a deposit, because a family who specifically wants a visitor should spend their time on the independent in-home market instead of on us.

What follows is the whole cost picture for an IB family in this community: the per-hour bands with sources, a year of support priced three ways, which subjects cost most to support, the extras that never appear in an hourly quote, what cannot be bought at any price, and how tutoring sits beside the other education costs in a Dubai household. Every figure names its publisher so you can check it.

One useful piece of context before the numbers. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. School fees are a known quantity this year. Tutoring is the line a family actually controls. The sector context is that Dubai has 227 private schools teaching 17 curricula to 387,441 students, so price variation between providers reflects positioning rather than any single market rate.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What IB support costs over a year depends mostly on the stage, because each stage has a different number of things that can go wrong at once.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS2 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The cheapest stage to support and the one where the in-home premium is most often justified, because a seven-year-old may genuinely need an adult in the room. Sessions are short, 40 to 45 minutes, and the useful work is number fluency, reading stamina and writing that holds a reason. Budget-band supervision at AED 33 to 65 an hour is frequently the right purchase here.

In Dubai the primary years also carry the KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies requirement, with separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs. Families who did not budget for Arabic support discover the need around Year 2, and it is a separate stream rather than something a general tutor absorbs.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Marked against four criteria per subject, each out of 8. Costs here are usually modest because the efficient intervention is a four to six session block on one criterion rather than a year of content teaching. Families who buy weekly sessions for a criterion problem spend roughly five times what the diagnosis required.

MYP provision around Dubailand is thinner than Diploma or British-curriculum provision, so Serena students on this track often travel further to school. The longer commute shortens the evening, which is why the in-home option is doubly expensive here: a later start and a higher travel component in the rate.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The most expensive stage, with six subjects, three Internal Assessments or more landing in overlapping windows, and the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge alongside. Specialist rates apply at Higher Level: AED 200 to 450 or more per hour, per TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate at AED 200 to 450+. The controllable variable is how many subjects you support, and the answer is usually one or two.

UAE schools sit the May session. We publish no IB exam or results dates, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and a date a family budgets around must be checkable. Ask your child's IB coordinator for the window and for the school's internal coursework deadlines, which fall earlier and drive the spending calendar.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses paired with a career-related study and a reflective project. Support costs tend to concentrate on the DP courses carried into the programme plus the written reflection, which is assessed against descriptors students have rarely been shown. A narrower spend than a full Diploma, because there are fewer subjects competing.

CP provision in Dubai is limited, so a Serena family considering it is usually also weighing a change of school and therefore a change of commute. For Ministry of Education equivalency the British-track rules are published in specific terms while no IB points threshold has been read on moe.gov.ae, so verify any equivalency question with the Ministry rather than inferring it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Support costs vary by subject more than families expect, mostly because specialist scarcity differs. These are the IB subjects Serena households ask about, with the cost logic attached.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The most expensive IB subject to support at Higher Level, because Paper 3 technique and proof work need a genuine specialist and the specialist band applies. At Standard Level a qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 is adequate for most cases.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Cheaper to support than Analysis and Approaches at the same level, because the commonest losses are statistical process habits — unstated hypotheses, conclusions not written in context — which close in three or four sessions rather than needing sustained content teaching.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Specialist band at Higher Level. The cost depends sharply on the diagnosis: an organic mechanisms habit is four to eight sessions, while an unsecured bonding foundation from DP1 is a twenty to thirty session content programme. Those two present identically to a parent.

Physics

HL and SL

Specialist band at Higher Level, where fields and the data-analysis component carry the losses. Good value in short blocks: three sessions on uncertainties and graph work address a component almost nobody practises deliberately.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-dense, so parents assume high hours. Usually the opposite: the dominant loss is command-term failure — describing where explanation was asked for — which is one or two sessions of strict marking rather than a term of revision.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy is the fastest gain available and takes very few sessions. The three IA commentaries are where costs rise if left late, because each has a strict word limit and a different unit, and emergency help cannot change a commentary already built on the wrong article.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application to the stimulus case is the whole examinable skill, and it is cheap to teach. The pre-released Paper 1 case study rewards structured reading months ahead, which is unpaid work the student does rather than tutored hours.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The Individual Oral is where support pays, because a global issue too broad to sustain ten minutes cannot be rescued later. Two or three sessions at the choosing stage are worth more than six in the week before.

Arabic B and Arabic ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Scarce at Diploma level, especially first-language Arabic, so availability rather than price is the constraint. Worth asking three to four weeks ahead rather than at a deadline, from any provider.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Underspent on, and cheap to support well: most low marks come from exhibition objects that illustrate rather than evidence a knowledge claim. Two sessions at the object-choosing stage are the whole of the value.

Extended Essay

Core

Process coaching only, and the money works at the start: narrowing a question that is actually answerable. Spent late, it buys presentation improvements on a question that was never viable. We do not draft, rewrite or edit an Extended Essay to completion.

Internal Assessment supervision

All DP subjects

Three to six sessions per subject, timed before the research question or topic is locked. The highest return per dirham in the Diploma, because each IA carries 20 to 25 per cent of a subject grade and the ceiling is set at the design stage.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, with genuinely different costs. All IB Gram teaching is delivered live online, one-to-one or in a small pair, with no travel on either side.

Internal Assessment block

Three to six sessions per subject, timed before the research question or topic is locked. At the specialist band that is roughly AED 600 to 2,700, and it protects a component worth 20 to 25 per cent of the subject grade. The cheapest high-value purchase in the Diploma, and the one most often bought too late to matter.

  • Must happen before the topic or research question is fixed
  • Criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Feedback on the student's own work only
  • Timed to the school's internal deadline, not the IB's

Weekly one-to-one, one or two subjects

The predictable arrangement: roughly thirty sessions a year per subject, which at the specialist band is AED 6,000 to 13,500 and at the qualified-tutor band AED 4,500 to 9,000. Two subjects double that, which is why we start with one unless the evidence genuinely demands two.

  • One subject first, so you can tell what the intervention did
  • Reviewed each term against marked work
  • Stops when the gap closes rather than at the end of the year
  • 90 minutes suits Higher Level; 60 suits most other work

Pair sessions across the belt

Two students at the same level in the same subject sharing a slot, which lowers the cost per student materially. Because nothing travels, a Serena student and a Villanova or Mudon student can share without either family driving. Suitable for content and exam technique, not for coursework supervision, which must stay individual and confidential.

  • Same subject, same level, similar starting point
  • Two to four students so everybody still speaks
  • No journey for either household
  • Not used for IA, EE or TOK supervision

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Serena

01

The travel premium, measured

Serena is far enough out that the cost of a tutor's journey is not a rounding error. On a weekday afternoon a tutor coming from Jumeirah, Al Barsha or Business Bay spends forty to sixty minutes each way, and no professional absorbs ninety minutes of unpaid time. It appears in the rate, and the published market figures show exactly how much.

Market in-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel: Bestimate's 2026 rate table gives AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500. The same qualified tutor online is AED 150 to 300, and an IB specialist online is AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. The spread between the two formats for the same person is the AED 50 to 150 travel premium, and Serena sits at its upper end.

Over a block of sessions the arithmetic becomes concrete. Twenty sessions at a AED 100 premium is AED 2,000 spent on driving. A full school year of weekly sessions at the same premium is around AED 3,000. For most families that is a meaningful sum spent on logistics rather than teaching, and it is invisible because it never appears as a separate line on an invoice.

The honest counterpoint: the premium is worth paying in specific cases. A young child who needs an adult present to stay on task, a student whose particular needs make video work genuinely harder, or a household with no quiet surface where a screen session can work. In those cases the independent in-home market in this belt is the right place to look, and the premium is its honest price rather than a mark-up.

A year of IB support, priced three ways

Families budget by the year, so here is the year. Three realistic arrangements for a Serena Diploma household, costed at published market bands, with the thing each one actually delivers. The point of setting them side by side is that the cheapest is not the weakest and the most expensive is not the most effective.

The targeted arrangement buys two Internal Assessment blocks and one short technique block across the year: roughly fifteen sessions, AED 3,000 to 6,750 at the specialist band. It protects the components where the ceiling is set early and fixes the habits that leak marks across every paper. For a student who is broadly coping and losing marks to specifics, it outperforms everything else in the table.

The weekly arrangement in one subject is thirty sessions and AED 6,000 to 13,500 at the specialist band. It is the right purchase for a genuine content deficit, where a student has missed a foundation and needs sustained teaching. It is the wrong purchase for a technique problem, which is what most families who buy it actually have.

The two-subject weekly arrangement is sixty sessions and AED 12,000 to 27,000, and it is rarely justified. In nearly every case we see, splitting attention across two subjects for a year produces less movement than one subject plus targeted blocks elsewhere. If the budget is there, the better use is a specialist for the weakest subject and school support plus structured independent practice for the rest.

Which IB subjects cost most to support, and why

Subject choice affects the bill more than tutor choice does, because specialist scarcity differs sharply across the Diploma and scarcity sets the band. Knowing which subjects sit where lets a family plan rather than react.

The expensive end is Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level Chemistry and Higher Level Physics, plus first-language Arabic and Theory of Knowledge supervision. These are in the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 or more per hour, and in two of them availability rather than price is the binding constraint. For those, the useful behaviour is to ask three to four weeks before you need to start.

The cheaper end is not the easier end. Biology, Economics, Business Management and English A are frequently supportable in a small number of sessions because their dominant losses are habits rather than content gaps: command terms in Biology, diagram accuracy in Economics, applying a tool to the stimulus in Business, choosing a sustainable global issue in English. A family can often buy three sessions in each of two subjects for less than a term of weekly work in one.

The one place where spending early beats spending more is Internal Assessment supervision in any subject. Each IA carries 20 to 25 per cent of its subject grade, and the ceiling is set when the topic or research question is chosen. Three to six sessions at that point protect the component. The same money spent after the data is collected improves the writing of something that was already capped.

Where Dubailand families waste IB tutoring money

  • Paying the Serena travel premium when the child works fine on a screen
  • Buying thirty sessions for what was a two-session technique fix
  • Buying IA help after the research question was locked in
  • Starting two subjects at once, so neither intervention can be read
  • Leaving no reserve for entry fees, reviews or a retake route

Five patterns, each seen often enough in enquiries from this belt to be worth naming. Each is avoidable with one question asked before the first payment, and together they account for most of the overspending we see.

The first is paying the travel premium by default. If your child works perfectly well on a screen, the AED 50 to 150 an hour that a visiting tutor adds for the drive to Serena is cost without return, and over a year it is around AED 3,000. The second is buying a weekly year for a technique problem. Command terms, diagram accuracy and unshown method are habit fixes of one to four sessions; thirty sessions costs eight times as much and spends most of its time on topics the student already has.

The third is buying Internal Assessment help too late. The component is worth 20 to 25 per cent of a subject grade and its ceiling is set at the topic-choosing stage. Emergency sessions in the final fortnight can improve presentation and cannot change a capped research question. The fourth is supporting two subjects simultaneously from the start, which makes it impossible to tell which intervention worked and splits the student's attention when they have six subjects already.

The fifth is spending the entire budget before results. Entry fees, review-of-results requests and any retake route are real costs that arrive after the tutoring money has gone, and they are quoted by the exam centre rather than by any tutor. A plan that keeps a reserve is a plan that can respond to a result.

05

The extras that never appear in an hourly quote

  • Per hour or per lesson, and whether an hour is sixty minutes
  • Cancellation notice, and who pays when a school event moves
  • Materials charges, and whether board or IB documents are being resold
  • Whether the quoted price includes VAT, confirmed in writing

An hourly rate is the start of the cost rather than the whole of it. Ask about every item below before a first paid session, from any provider including us, and get the answers in writing.

Session length and billing unit. An hour sometimes means fifty minutes. Ninety-minute sessions are sometimes billed as two hours. Ask whether the quote is per hour or per lesson, because they are different questions with different answers and the difference compounds across thirty sessions.

Cancellation terms. How much notice avoids a charge, and what happens when a school event moves at a day's notice, which in Dubai happens regularly. This matters more for in-home arrangements, where a wasted journey is a real cost to the tutor and is normally charged in full. Online, a clashed session can often be moved inside the same week, which over a two-year Diploma is several hours of teaching kept rather than lost.

Materials, platform fees and VAT. Ask whether any materials charge applies, and note that nobody should be selling you IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables: those are published by the IB and should be cited and linked, not resold as a resource pack. On VAT, the only honest position is to require clarity in writing about whether a quoted price includes it; we will not state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees as a general fact, because that needs a Federal Tax Authority citation rather than an opinion.

06

What no price can buy

  • No promises about final grades; a refund claim without published terms is empty
  • Completed IAs are misconduct, not a service, and risk the whole Diploma
  • IB and board documents are free to access and should be linked, never resold
  • Untraceable ratings are not worth a premium

Three things are on sale in this market that should not be, and recognising them protects both the budget and the student's qualification.

A promise about the final grade is the first. No tutor, centre or platform controls an examination outcome, and a page offering one either has unpublished refund terms or is making a claim it cannot honour. Where a refund promise exists, its exact terms should be printed on the same screen as the promise. Treat any promise of a specific points total, a specific grade or a promised improvement as a reason to look elsewhere rather than a premium feature.

Completed coursework is the second, and it is the more serious. At least one operator ranking for searches like this one sells finished Internal Assessments. Buying one is not a shortcut; it is passing off another person's work as your child's own, which is academic misconduct under IB rules and risks the Diploma rather than a grade. Legitimate support means teaching the content, explaining the criteria, questioning the reasoning and giving feedback on what the student wrote. It never means supplying text or data.

Board and IB material as a product is the third. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are published by the IB and the examination boards, and should be cited and linked rather than reproduced or resold. A provider charging for them is selling access to something free and redistributing material they do not own. A fourth, smaller point: a star rating nobody can trace is not a reason to accept a higher quote, and competitor pages in this market show conflicting rating figures within a single page.

07

Who may legally tutor your child, and why checking is free

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, two years, Resolution 710 of 2023 (u.ae)
  • Apply via MoHRE Private Tutor Licensing; two working days, no listed fee
  • No fine schedule is published, so distrust any amount quoted
  • KHDA Educational Services Permits apply to institutes with premises; we hold none

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work rather than unregulated work, and the verification costs nothing, which makes it worth doing regardless of price band.

The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The route is MoHRE's own 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' service, through the smart app, website or e-services system, with a two-working-day completion time and no listed fee.

Two consequences for a family comparing quotes. Because the permit is free, no tutor should be passing on a licensing cost in their rate. And because u.ae states plainly that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, a tutor who tells you the permit is optional has told you something useful about themselves. No fine schedule has been published — Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify amounts — so treat any figure quoted at you as unverified.

The institutional layer is separate. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific licence with initial approval, completion steps and annual renewal. IB Gram holds none and claims none, has no UAE office or centre, and does not describe any school as a client or partner. KHDA is responsible for overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai; that is a fact about KHDA rather than an endorsement of anybody.

08

Tutoring cost in context for a Serena household

Tutoring competes with other education costs rather than existing beside them, so the last table sets it against the rest of the budget. The surrounding figures are included so the tutoring line can be judged against something concrete.

The anchor is the fee position. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That makes school fees a known quantity this year and tutoring the variable a family chooses.

The sector context is worth having too. Dubai has 227 private schools teaching 17 curricula to 387,441 students as of 2024-25, with UK curricula at 37 per cent of enrolment and International Baccalaureate programmes at 7 per cent. Seven new private schools were approved for the 2026-27 intake — four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate — creating 16,846 new places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. More IB provision over time means a slightly deeper local tutor pool, though not quickly.

The items that catch families out are at the bottom of the table: examination entry fees, review-of-results requests and any retake route, all quoted by the exam centre rather than by a tutor. Build them in from the start. A family that has spent its entire tutoring budget by May has no capacity to respond to a result, and responding to a result is sometimes the highest-value spending of the whole two years.

Serena and the communities that are quoted differently

In-home quotes in the Dubailand belt track distance from the city, which means neighbouring communities are quoted differently for the same tutor. These are Serena's comparison points.

Serena

Townhouse clusters including Bella Casa and Casa Viva, off Al Qudra Road. Among the furthest-out communities in this belt for a visiting tutor, which puts in-home quotes at the top of the market range and makes the travel premium the largest single variable in the price.

Mudon

A few minutes closer and quoted marginally lower for in-home work. Shares Serena's school intake almost exactly, so a neighbour's recommendation usually transfers on teaching quality even when the quoted rate does not.

Villanova

Adjacent, same travel band, same intake. Serena and Villanova families compare quotes directly, and pair sessions between the two communities work well online because neither household has to travel for them to happen.

Remraam

The far edge of the belt, where in-home quotes are highest and availability thinnest. Families here are the clearest case for removing travel from the arrangement rather than negotiating it down.

Town Square

Apartment-dense and slightly closer in, with more group-class purchasing because centres are within reach. The per-student economics look attractive until the drive and the mismatch with a diagnosed gap are counted.

Arabian Ranches 3

Noticeably closer for most tutors, so quotes sit roughly AED 30 to 50 per hour below Serena's for the same person. Useful to know before assuming a friend simply negotiated better terms.

Dubailand, Motor City and Arabian Ranches

Both halves help. The subject, level and the problem in one sentence tells us what the work is; a budget tells us which of the arrangements above is realistic. Families who state a budget get a plan that fits it, including the honest answer that a particular target is not reachable within it.

  2. 02

Hours estimated before a rate is quoted

We say how many sessions the job looks like, then quote. That order matters because IB cases range from two sessions to thirty, and a headline rate quoted in advance of any evidence tells a family nothing about what they will actually spend across a year.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

A real lesson with the person who would continue, no card required. It tests the diagnosis and the fit together, and it ends with a session count. Sometimes the count is smaller than the family expected; occasionally the honest answer is that no tutoring is needed yet.

  4. 04

A written plan with a finish date

The plan names the component to attack first, the session count, and the date it ends, set against your school's internal deadlines rather than a generic schedule. A plan without a finish date is a subscription, and subscriptions are how tutoring budgets quietly double.

  5. 05

Reviewed each term, stopped when done

Each session produces notes naming coverage and set work. Each term the arrangement is reviewed against marked evidence, and when the gap closes we say so rather than letting the slot run. Keeping a reserve for entry fees and post-results decisions is part of that conversation.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

No drive, so no premium

Serena sits at the top of the AED 50 to 150 hourly travel premium in this market because of how far out it is. Online delivery removes it rather than discounting it, which over a year of weekly sessions is roughly AED 3,000 not spent on somebody's journey.

Every figure carries its publisher

Each AED band on this page names the competitor page or rate table it came from and is presented as the market rather than our price. Three of the six best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars.

Spending order, not spending volume

Internal Assessment blocks before the topic is locked, technique fixes before content sweeps, one subject before two. The order matters more than the total, and the order is what a plan should state in writing.

Nothing sold that should not be

No promises about final grades, no completed coursework, no resold IB or board documents, no self-awarded ratings, and no examiner claims we cannot evidence. Each of those is available in this market, and each is a reason to question a quote rather than pay more for it.

No invented UAE presence

There is no IB Gram office or centre in the UAE and no home visits anywhere in the country, which is an India-only service. We hold no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval, and we publish no IB exam date, because ibo.org blocks automated verification.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Serena: your questions answered

What does an IB home tutor cost for a family in Serena?+

In-home one-to-one visits in Dubai are advertised at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table showing AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. Serena sits at the upper end because it is among the furthest-out communities in the Dubailand belt, so a tutor's round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes. Online, the same qualified tutor is AED 150 to 300 and an IB specialist AED 200 to 450 or more. Those are published market figures, not our prices.

Why is my Serena quote higher than my friend's in Arabian Ranches?+

Distance, almost always. Serena sits twenty to thirty minutes further out than the Ranches for most of Dubai's tutoring workforce, and that time is priced into an in-home hour. The difference commonly shows as AED 30 to 50 an hour on an otherwise identical arrangement, which across thirty sessions is AED 900 to 1,500. If both quotes are for online sessions and still differ, you are probably comparing a generalist with a subject specialist rather than two prices for the same service.

Is the travel premium ever worth paying?+

Yes, in specific cases. A child under about ten who needs an adult physically present to stay on task, a student whose particular needs make screen work genuinely harder, or a household with no quiet surface where a video session can work. Those are real reasons, and the independent in-home market in this belt serves them at AED 180 to 500 an hour. What is not a reason is the assumption that presence equals better teaching: a specialist on a screen who has read the subject guide beats a generalist in the dining room who has not.

How much should a year of IB tutoring cost in total?+

It depends on the arrangement rather than the rate. A targeted year — two Internal Assessment blocks plus one technique block, about fifteen sessions — is AED 3,000 to 6,750 at the specialist band. Weekly sessions in one subject, about thirty, is AED 6,000 to 13,500. Two subjects weekly doubles that again and is rarely justified. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one hour a week are AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier, AED 600 to 1,200 mid, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Which IB subjects are the most expensive to get help with?+

Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level Chemistry and Higher Level Physics, plus first-language Arabic and Theory of Knowledge supervision. All sit in the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 or more an hour, and in Arabic and TOK the real constraint is availability rather than price. Biology, Economics, Business Management and English A are usually cheaper to support well, because their dominant losses are habits — command terms, diagram accuracy, applying a tool to the stimulus — that close in a handful of sessions.

When is the best time to spend money on Internal Assessment support?+

Before the topic or research question is locked in, which is usually several months earlier than families act. Each IA carries 20 to 25 per cent of its subject grade, and the ceiling is set at the design stage: a research question without a measurable, controllable relationship cannot score well however carefully the write-up is done. Three to six sessions at that point protect the component for AED 600 to 2,700. The same money spent after the data is collected improves presentation on something already capped.

What should I ask about before paying for the first session?+

Five things, in writing. Whether the quote is per hour or per lesson, and whether an hour means sixty minutes. How much cancellation notice avoids a charge, and what happens when a school event moves at a day's notice. Whether any materials fee applies — and note that nobody should be reselling you IB past papers or mark schemes. Whether the quoted price includes VAT. And how many sessions the provider thinks the job will take, which is the number that actually decides your spend.

Can a tutor guarantee my child's IB points will improve?+

No, and a provider offering it is telling you something about themselves. Nobody controls an examination outcome, and a refund promise means nothing unless its exact terms are published on the same screen as the promise. What a good arrangement can offer instead is a diagnosis you can check, a plan with a session count and a finish date, marked work you can read, and a termly review against evidence. Treat promises of a specific grade or points total as a reason to look elsewhere rather than a premium feature.

Will someone come to our villa in Serena for lessons?+

Not through IB Gram. We teach UAE students one-to-one over live video, and home visits are a service we run only in India, so no tutor will arrive at a Dubailand address. There is no IB Gram office or centre anywhere in the UAE either. Independent in-home tutors do work in this belt at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, and if presence in the room is what your child needs, that market is the right one to approach rather than us.

Is a tuition centre in Motor City cheaper than one-to-one?+

Per hour, yes; monthly packages in this market are advertised from around AED 799 for eight sessions. Per outcome, it depends on what your child needs. A group class delivers a fixed syllabus at a fixed pace, which suits a student who is broadly on track and wants more practice. It cannot address an individual diagnosed gap. Add the drive from Serena — thirty to forty minutes each way plus waiting, so around two hours of household time per session — and a short one-to-one block is often cheaper to the finish line.

Do I have to check whether a tutor holds a UAE permit?+

If you are hiring directly, yes, and it costs nothing. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, with applications through MoHRE's Private Tutor Licensing service. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Because the permit is free, no tutor should pass on a licensing cost. No fine schedule is published, so distrust any penalty figure quoted at you.

What happens to the money if the tutor turns out to be the wrong fit?+

With us the first lesson is free and is taught by the tutor who would continue, so the fit is tested before anything is paid. If the pace or style does not suit your child, say so and we match again rather than running a paid block that nobody is enjoying. When hiring an independent tutor directly, ask before the first session what happens if the arrangement ends after one lesson, and whether any block payment is refundable — that answer is worth more than a small difference in the hourly rate.

Should I budget for exam entry fees and retakes separately?+

Yes, and families who do not are the ones who feel overcharged in May. Examination entry fees, review-of-results requests and any retake route are quoted by the examination centre rather than by any tutor, and they arrive after the tutoring budget has typically been spent. Keeping a reserve also means you can act on a result: responding to one disappointing subject with a short, well-aimed block is sometimes the highest-value spending in the whole two years, and it is only possible if the money has not all gone.

Do Arabic and Islamic Education add to the tutoring budget in Dubai?+

They often should and usually do not. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and separate classes organised for Arabs and non-Arabs, since combined classes are prohibited. For a non-Arab Diploma student those periods are genuine additional work in a language not used at home. We run Arabic as its own stream for that reason, and it is worth pricing in rather than discovering in a report.

Price the arrangement, not the hour

Before hiring an IB home tutor in Serena, decide which arrangement you are buying: a targeted set of blocks, weekly support in one subject, or supervision for a younger child. Each has a different annual figure and a different purpose, and the hourly rate is the least informative number in the decision. Tell us the subject, the level, the problem in one sentence and what you can spend, and you will get a session count, a plan with a finish date, and a rate quoted after the free trial lesson. Teaching is live, one-to-one and online; nobody drives to Dubailand.
