IB Tutor near me in Serena

Parents searching for an IB tutor near me in Serena are usually asking something more precise than the words suggest: does anyone nearby actually know this programme. The IB is four programmes, dozens of subjects, two levels and a separate core, and most local advertising treats it as one thing. This page gives you the questions to ask. Teaching is live online, one-to-one.

IB & IGCSE in Serena

There is no such thing as an IB syllabus

Serena sits off Al Qudra Road at the outer edge of the Dubailand belt, among townhouse clusters including Bella Casa and Casa Viva, with Mudon, Villanova and Remraam close by. Families here searching for an IB tutor nearby are rarely attached to the word 'nearby'. What they want is somebody who genuinely knows what their child is being assessed on, and the local search cannot tell them who that is.

Part of the problem is the phrase itself. The IB is four programmes: the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme, the Diploma Programme and the Career-related Programme. Within the Diploma there are dozens of subjects, each with a Higher and a Standard Level that differ in content, papers and weightings, plus a core of Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS that is assessed on its own terms. 'IB tutor' describes all of it and distinguishes none of it.

The second part is that subject guides change. Several Diploma subjects have been through a revised syllabus in recent years, with different assessment structures from their predecessors. A tutor who taught a subject competently under the old guide and has not read the new one will teach the wrong paper structure confidently. That is not detectable from an advert, and it is not detectable from a conversation about how experienced somebody is.

So this page is a set of questions rather than a sales pitch. What to ask about the programme, the subject and the level. Which components exist and which of them a tutor may legitimately touch. What the core requires and why general subject tutors cannot help with it. Where our own coverage is genuinely thin. And what the Dubai market charges, with sources, so you can judge any quote including ours.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram has no office or centre in the UAE and does not send tutors to UAE addresses, because home visits are a service we run only in India. Serena students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. That is also why the proximity question is moot for us: the tutor is chosen for the subject and level rather than for being within driving distance of Al Qudra Road.

One standing note. We publish no IB exam or results dates anywhere on this site, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and a date a family plans around has to be checkable. UAE schools sit the May session; ask your child's IB coordinator for the window and for the school's own internal deadlines, which fall earlier and are the ones that bite. For scale, Dubai's private sector runs 227 schools teaching 17 curricula to 387,441 students, with International Baccalaureate programmes at 7 per cent of enrolment, per Dubai Media Office figures for 2024-25. A minority programme inside a very large market is exactly the situation in which a local search misleads.

  • Subject guides are revised; a tutor on an old guide teaches the wrong structure
  • Ask which guide, which level, which components — not how many years of experience
  • TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS are assessed separately and need specific knowledge
  • No UAE office and no home visits; teaching is live online one-to-one
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Start by naming the programme, because the four are assessed in completely different ways and a tutor strong in one may know nothing about another.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS2 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-based, with no external examinations and no subject syllabus in the conventional sense. Useful tutoring is about capability rather than coverage: number fluency without a calculator, reading stamina, and writing that holds a reason across several sentences. A tutor who asks which textbook the school uses has misunderstood the programme.

In Dubai the primary years also carry KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs and combined classes prohibited. Families arriving from countries where Arabic was optional often meet this requirement for the first time here, and it is a separate stream rather than something absorbed into general support.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked from 0 to 8, with the criterion names differing by group. There are no past papers. A tutor who cannot name the four criteria in your child's subject is teaching content and hoping it maps onto the marking, which is the single commonest failure in MYP tutoring.

MYP provision around the Dubailand belt is thinner than Diploma or British-curriculum provision, so Serena students on this track often travel further to school. That shortens the evening and makes the criterion-focused approach even more important, because there is less time available to waste on content the student already has.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, graded out of 45 with the core alongside. Each subject has its own papers, weightings and Internal Assessment, typically carrying 20 to 25 per cent of the subject grade. This is where level matters most: Higher and Standard Level are different courses with different components, not the same course at different speeds.

UAE schools sit the May session, and in Dubai schools the internal coursework deadlines generally fall weeks before the IB's own dates. The school's calendar is therefore the planning anchor. Ask the IB coordinator for both sets of dates and treat the earlier one as real.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

At least two DP courses combined with a career-related study and a reflective project, plus a personal and professional skills component assessed on written reflection. Tutoring usually concentrates on the DP courses carried into it and on the reflective writing, which is marked against descriptors most students have never been shown.

CP provision in Dubai is limited, so a Serena family weighing it is usually also weighing a change of school and commute. For Ministry of Education equivalency the British-track rules are published in specific terms while no IB points threshold has been read on moe.gov.ae, so verify any equivalency question with the Ministry rather than inferring it from a comparison.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Within the Diploma, these are the subjects Serena households ask about, with the level-specific detail a tutor should be able to state without checking.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof and calculus. At Higher Level there is a third paper, sixty minutes and 20 per cent of the grade, built on sustained reasoning. A tutor who describes Paper 3 as simply harder questions has not taught it through a cycle.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics and modelling, with a graphing calculator permitted throughout. The examinable habit is showing the input and interpreting the output, which is a different teaching job from the hand-fluency work Analysis and Approaches requires.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organised around structure and reactivity, with a scientific investigation worth 20 per cent marked on four criteria of six marks each. Ask any tutor what Criterion 'research design' requires before they explain any content.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes studied at both levels, with Higher Level extensions concentrated in fields and nuclear physics, and a data-analysis component inside Paper 1 that almost nobody practises deliberately.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-dense with command terms setting the ceiling on each answer. The marks lost are rarely about knowledge: 'outline', 'explain' and 'discuss' carry different expectations, and answering one as another costs the mark before the biology is read.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy is the fastest available gain, and the three Internal Assessment commentaries each sit on a different unit with a strict word limit. A tutor should know how many commentaries there are without being told.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool-based and stimulus-driven, with a pre-released case study for one paper that rewards structured reading months in advance. Marks are lost by applying a tool correctly in the abstract without reference to the case.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Two of the three assessed components are oral or non-literary. The Individual Oral needs a global issue narrow enough to sustain ten minutes and two extracts chosen well ahead; a vague global issue is the commonest cause of a low mark.

Arabic B and Arabic ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Distinct from the KHDA-mandated school provision but running alongside it, with text handling, writing and two oral components. Register rather than vocabulary is where non-Arab students lose marks. Availability at Diploma level is the tightest in our whole subject list.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects with commentary plus a prescribed-title essay of 1,600 words. A subject tutor without TOK experience cannot help here: the assessment is about knowledge claims and justification, not about any subject's content.

Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words of independent research with a school supervisor. Legitimate support is process coaching: narrowing an answerable question, building a source base, managing reflection sessions. We do not draft, rewrite or edit an Extended Essay to completion.

CAS

Core

Creativity, activity and service, completed and documented rather than graded, but a Diploma requirement. No tutoring is needed or appropriate; what families occasionally need is help understanding the documentation expectations, which the school sets.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every IB need in this community, all delivered live online one-to-one or in a small pair, with no travel on either side.

Weekly one-to-one on a named subject and level

A fixed slot with a tutor matched to the exact course, working from the current subject guide. At Higher Level ninety minutes is usually right, because a single extended-response question with a proper review of the reasoning consumes most of an hour. The subject guide reference is confirmed before the first lesson rather than assumed.

  • Matched to the programme, subject and level, with the guide named
  • Same tutor weekly, so the diagnosis carries forward
  • Notes after each session naming coverage and set work
  • Reviewed each term against marked work

Core support: TOK or the Extended Essay

Two to four sessions at the point where the decisions are made: choosing exhibition objects that evidence rather than illustrate a knowledge claim, or narrowing an Extended Essay question until it is answerable with available sources. This is specialist work that general subject tutors cannot do, and it is almost worthless if bought late.

  • Timed at the choosing stage, not at the deadline
  • Criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Feedback on the student's own writing only
  • Coordinated with, never replacing, the school supervisor

Component-specific intensive

A block aimed at one component that has failed twice: Mathematics Paper 3, a science data-analysis section, an Individual Oral, an Economics commentary structure. Six to ten sessions of marked, timed work with every lost mark categorised. For students whose knowledge is adequate and whose marks are not, this is the most efficient IB tuition available.

  • Every question marked against the published criteria
  • Lost marks categorised and attacked in order of volume
  • Defined session count with a finish date
  • Repeatable before mocks and before the May session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Serena

01

What to ask before you hire anyone

A local search returns businesses by proximity and prominence, which tells you nothing about programme knowledge. The substitute for that signal is a short set of questions, and they work equally well on a neighbour's recommendation, an agency and us.

Start with the programme and the level. Which programme is my child on, and what does that change? For the Diploma: which level, and what components does that level sit that the other does not? A tutor who teaches the subject answers immediately — Higher Level in Mathematics has a third paper; Higher Level sciences have additional content inside the same themes; Higher Level English has a separate essay component. A tutor who has only taught 'the IB' will generalise.

Then ask about the guide. Which subject guide are you working from, and when did it change? Several Diploma subjects have been through revised syllabuses with different assessment structures, and a tutor working from a superseded guide will teach a paper pattern that no longer exists. This question is uncomfortable to ask and it is the single most useful one on the list.

Then ask about the Internal Assessment criteria by name, and what each is worth. Then ask what they will not do with that Internal Assessment. A tutor who hesitates on that last one is a risk to your child's Diploma rather than to your budget. The table below sets out the questions with what a strong answer and a weak answer sound like.

02

The Diploma's moving parts, and who assesses what

A Diploma student is being assessed by several different mechanisms at once, and families rarely see them laid out. Knowing which is which changes who you should be asking for help and when.

External examinations are marked by the IB and sat in the May session for UAE schools. Internal Assessments are produced by the student, marked by the school and moderated externally, and typically carry 20 to 25 per cent of a subject grade. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are externally assessed and contribute to the award alongside the six subjects. CAS is completed and documented rather than graded, but it is a requirement.

That structure has two practical consequences. The first is that the school holds more of the grade than parents assume: internal deadlines, supervision and moderation all sit with the school, which is why the school's calendar is the real planning anchor and the IB coordinator is the right person to ask about dates. The second is that the ceiling on a large share of each grade is set early, when a research question or topic is chosen, rather than in the revision period.

The column worth reading twice in the table below is the last one. Legitimate help differs by component. On an examined paper, a tutor can teach anything and mark anything. On an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay or a TOK essay, a tutor may explain, question and give feedback on the student's own work, and may not produce any part of it. That distinction is the difference between tutoring and misconduct, and it is not a matter of degree.

03

Why 'twenty years of experience' is the wrong credential

  • Subject guides are revised; a long career on an old guide can mislead
  • Ask which guide, which level, which components, and when they last ran a cohort
  • The mismatch surfaces a term later, as practice on the wrong paper format
  • Examiner claims we cannot evidence are not made, and imply no access to marking

Experience is usually the headline claim in this market, and on its own it is close to uninformative for the IB. The reason is that the thing being examined changes. Subject guides are revised, assessment structures alter, and a long career teaching the previous version of a course can actively mislead a student.

The pattern we see is specific. A tutor teaches a science or a mathematics course for years, the guide is revised with a different paper structure and a different internal assessment, and the tutor continues teaching the shape they know. The content overlaps enough that nobody notices for a term. What surfaces later is a student who has practised the wrong paper format, or who has built an internal assessment against superseded criteria.

The useful credential is therefore current and specific: which guide, which level, which components, and when did you last teach a cohort through to the May session. Those are checkable in a two-minute conversation, and a tutor who teaches the course now will answer them without effort. Nobody should be offended by the question; the ones who are have answered it.

A related caution about a claim that circulates widely in this market: examiner status. We do not describe tutors as IB examiners for anyone whose current status cannot be evidenced, and examiner status in any case gives no access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. If a provider uses it to imply otherwise, that is a reason for scepticism rather than a reason to pay more.

04

The core: where general subject tutors cannot help

  • TOK rewards objects that evidence a knowledge claim, not ones that illustrate a theme
  • The Extended Essay is decided by the question more than by the writing
  • Both are time-sensitive: help at the choosing stage, not at the deadline
  • CAS requires no tutoring; the school sets the documentation expectations

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are the parts of the Diploma most likely to be mishandled by a competent subject tutor, because they are not subject work. A brilliant chemistry teacher has no particular advantage in either.

Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with commentary and an essay of 1,600 words on a prescribed title. What it rewards is a knowledge claim examined properly: objects that evidence a point about how knowledge is produced or justified, rather than objects that merely illustrate a theme. The commonest low-scoring exhibition is one where the objects are interesting and do not do any work. That is diagnosable in a single session at the choosing stage and almost unfixable afterwards.

The Extended Essay is four thousand words of independent research with a school supervisor, and its outcome is largely determined by the question. A question too broad cannot be answered in the word count; a question with no accessible sources cannot be researched from Dubai; a question that is really a topic produces a descriptive essay that cannot reach the upper bands. Two sessions spent narrowing it are worth more than six spent polishing prose later.

CAS needs no tutoring at all, and anyone offering it is selling something unnecessary. What families sometimes need is help understanding the documentation the school expects, which the school itself is the authority on. The honest summary for the core is that help is cheap, specific and time-sensitive: it belongs at the decision points, not at the deadlines.

05

Academic honesty, stated as a boundary rather than a slogan

  • Allowed: teaching, explaining criteria, questioning, feedback on the student's own draft
  • Not allowed: choosing topics, writing, editing to completion, supplying data or models
  • The exposure is to the whole Diploma, not to a single subject grade
  • Official documents are linked, never reproduced or supplied as a resource pack

This is the point on which a tutoring arrangement is either safe or dangerous, and it deserves plain words because at least one operator ranking for searches like this one sells completed Internal Assessments outright.

What a tutor may do: teach the underlying content, explain what a criterion requires, question a research question until it is answerable, work through a comparable example on a different topic, read a draft the student wrote and say where the reasoning fails, and mark practice work against the published criteria. All of that is teaching, and all of it leaves the assessed work in the student's hands.

What a tutor may not do: choose the topic and hand it over, write or rewrite any part of the text, produce or process the data, edit prose to a finished state, or supply another student's work as a model. Each of those is the student presenting another person's work as their own, which is academic misconduct under IB rules and a malpractice matter for the school. The supervisor signs declarations about authenticity; the exposure falls on the student, and it falls on the whole Diploma rather than on one grade.

A related rule that is less discussed: IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables should be referenced and linked rather than reproduced or supplied. A provider handing you a bundle of them is redistributing material it does not own, and in the case of unreleased material that is a malpractice exposure as well as a copyright one. Ask any prospective tutor where their line sits before you book. A vague answer is itself the answer.

06

Where our coverage is genuinely thin

  • Tightest coverage: first-language Arabic, TOK supervision, HL Chemistry and Physics windows
  • We offer real slots, an honest wait estimate, or a recommendation to look elsewhere
  • A generalist is never substituted into a specialist request
  • Ask three to four weeks ahead for core components and coursework support

No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit, which is odd, because every tutoring service has one. Stating ours is more useful to a Serena family than a claim to cover everything.

The tightest categories are first-language Arabic at Diploma level, Theory of Knowledge supervision, Higher Level Chemistry and Physics in particular windows, and some of the less commonly taken subjects where UAE demand is low. For those, a request may come back with a wait rather than a slot, and that is true of any provider rather than a peculiarity of ours.

What happens next is the part that matters. The honest options are to offer the windows that genuinely exist even if they are not your preferred ones, to give a realistic estimate of when the preferred window may open, or to say we cannot cover it and that you should look elsewhere. All three get used. What does not happen is a general tutor placed into a specialist request, which would solve our scheduling problem by handing you the real one.

Practical advice independent of who you use: for niche Higher Level subjects, for core components and for coursework supervision, ask three to four weeks before you need to start. The fortnight before an Internal Assessment deadline is when every family in Dubai asks the same question, and good supervision cannot be conjured at that notice by anybody. The corollary is worth saying too: for mainstream subjects at either level, availability is rarely the constraint, and a family asking in term time will usually be matched within a few days.

07

What the local pool looks like, and what it costs

The geography argument is worth finishing honestly. Serena is among the furthest-out communities in the Dubailand belt, and IB students are a minority of Dubai's private-school population — International Baccalaureate programmes account for 7 per cent of enrolment against 37 per cent on UK curricula, per Dubai Media Office figures for 2024-25. A small share of a large market, distributed across the city, is not concentrated around Al Qudra Road.

That has a price consequence as well as a quality one. An in-home arrangement here prices a tutor's eighty to a hundred and twenty minute round trip into the hour, which is why market in-home rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 including travel — Bestimate's 2026 rate table shows AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500 — against AED 150 to 300 for the same qualified tutor online and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB specialist, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Unitors publishing IB from AED 200.

So a family insisting on proximity is paying more to choose from fewer candidates, and the candidates are selected by willingness to drive rather than by programme knowledge. For a mainstream request that may still produce somebody good. For Higher Level Chemistry with an Internal Assessment due, or for TOK exhibition coaching, it frequently will not.

Removing travel reverses both effects: the premium disappears and the pool is selected on programme, subject and level. The figures below are published market bands from the parties named, not IB Gram's price list; we quote per student after the free trial lesson, because the right band depends on the component and the level rather than on a single headline number.

What the first session should look like

  • Bring two marked papers or a draft, not a list of difficult topics
  • By the end you should know the component, the cause and the session count
  • No generic diagnostic tests or syllabus walkthroughs
  • The first lesson is free, with the tutor who would continue

A good first session with an IB student is recognisable, and it looks nothing like a consultation. It starts with the student's own marked work on the screen: two recent papers, an Internal Assessment draft, or the last report with its criterion or component breakdown.

From that, the tutor should be able to say three things by the end of the hour. Which component the marks are leaking from. Whether the losses are content, reasoning or command-term misreading. And roughly how many sessions the job needs, including the possibility that the answer is few. A session that produces none of those has produced nothing except a payment.

What should not happen is a generic diagnostic test, a syllabus walkthrough, or a conversation about which topics the student finds hard. Students are poor witnesses to their own errors, not through carelessness but because the errors are invisible from the inside: a command-term failure looks like a correct answer to the person who wrote it. The marked paper is the only honest witness in the room.

With us, that session is free, there is no card required, and it is taught by the tutor who would continue rather than by a coordinator. If the pace or the style does not suit your child, say so and we match again. That is the whole purpose of making the first lesson real: you are judging teaching rather than a pitch, which is the only test a local search cannot run for you.

Where we tutor

Serena and the IB families around it

IB provision in this belt is concentrated in a few schools, which means neighbouring communities share the same small set of programmes and the same thin local tutor pool.

Serena

Bella Casa and Casa Viva clusters off Al Qudra Road. Most IB families here travel out of the belt for school, which is exactly why the local tutor pool is a poor proxy for programme knowledge. Fibre throughout, so online sessions are reliable.

Mudon

Adjacent and sharing school intake. Households here often have children in two different programmes at once — MYP and Diploma — which are assessed so differently that one tutor rarely serves both well.

Villanova

The same travel band and nearly the same intake. Pair sessions between Villanova and Serena students in the same subject and level work well online, because the programme match matters and the geography does not.

Remraam

Furthest out for most school routes, with the latest realistic session starts in this group. For Diploma students here, evening slots are used for review and marking rather than for first exposure to new content.

Arabian Ranches 3

Closer to the Ranches schools, mostly British curriculum, so IB families here are usually travelling to Al Barsha as well. Earlier arrivals than Serena, which shows up as more appetite for two sessions a week in DP2.

Town Square

Apartment-dense, with the practical constraint of finding a quiet room at the hour a session falls. Programme mix skews towards MYP and IGCSE rather than the Diploma.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the programme, subject and level

The most useful first message says which programme, which subject, which level, and which component is going wrong. With that we can tell you honestly whether it is covered and in which slots. 'IB maths' or 'IB science' takes two more exchanges before anybody can answer anything.

  2. 02

Matched on the course, with the guide confirmed

The tutor is matched to the named course and states which subject guide they work from before the first lesson. If the right specialist is not free in your window you are told, with an honest estimate, rather than offered a generalist whose experience is in a superseded version of the course.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson built on marked work

Bring two marked papers or a draft. A real lesson with the person who would continue, no card required, ending with a diagnosis and a session count. If the fit is wrong in pace or style, say so and we match again rather than starting a paid block.

  4. 04

A plan by component and deadline

The plan names the component to attack first and is timed against your school's internal deadlines rather than the IB's, because the school's come earlier. Core components are scheduled at their decision points — object choice, question narrowing — rather than at their deadlines.

  5. 05

Reviewed against evidence, stopped when done

Work is marked against the published criteria rather than ticked, each session produces notes, and each term the plan is reviewed against marked evidence. When a component no longer needs weekly support we say so instead of letting the slot run on.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to a course, not to 'the IB'

The IB is four programmes, dozens of subjects and two levels plus a separate core. Matching on the named course and level is the difference between a tutor who starts work in session one and a tutor who spends three sessions discovering what your child is studying.

The current subject guide, named

Guides are revised, and a tutor working from a superseded one teaches a paper structure that no longer exists. We state which guide a tutor works from before the first lesson, because it is checkable and because the mismatch is otherwise invisible for a term.

Core components treated as their own discipline

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are not subject work, and a strong subject tutor has no particular advantage in either. Support is scheduled at the decision points, where two sessions change the outcome, rather than at the deadline, where they cannot.

A boundary stated before you ask

We teach, explain criteria, question reasoning and give feedback on the student's own work. We do not choose topics, write, rewrite, produce data or supply a past student's work. The exposure from crossing that line is the Diploma rather than a grade.

Coverage limits and sources, both disclosed

We say where our coverage is thin — first-language Arabic, TOK supervision, some Higher Level science windows — and every AED figure on this page names who published it. No regulator approval is held or implied, there is no UAE office, and no IB date is published, because ibo.org blocks automated verification.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Serena: your questions answered

Is there an IB tutor actually based near Serena?+

Possibly, but it is a weak thing to optimise for. IB students are around 7 per cent of Dubai's private-school enrolment, so programme specialists are thinly spread across the city rather than concentrated near Al Qudra Road, and most Serena IB families already travel out of the belt for school. IB Gram teaches online one-to-one, which removes distance from the equation: we have no UAE office or centre, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. Independent in-home tutors here charge roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel.

What should I ask a prospective IB tutor first?+

Which programme and level your child is on and what that changes. A tutor who teaches the course will name the components that exist at Higher Level and not at Standard Level without prompting. Then ask which subject guide they work from and when it last changed, because several Diploma subjects have been revised and a tutor on an old guide will teach a paper structure that no longer exists. Then ask the Internal Assessment criteria by name, and what they will not do with that assessment.

Why is 'twenty years of IB experience' not enough?+

Because what is examined changes. Subject guides are revised, with different assessment structures and internal assessment criteria, and a long career teaching the previous version can mislead a student in a way that is invisible for a term. The content overlaps enough that nobody notices immediately; what surfaces later is practice on the wrong paper format or coursework built against superseded criteria. The better credential is current and specific: which guide, which level, which components, and when they last took a cohort to the May session.

Can a subject tutor help with Theory of Knowledge?+

Not usually, and it is worth being blunt about it. TOK is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with commentary and a 1,600-word prescribed-title essay, and what it rewards is a knowledge claim properly examined — objects that evidence how knowledge is produced or justified, rather than objects that illustrate a theme. An excellent chemistry or history teacher has no particular advantage there. The useful help is two sessions at the object-choosing stage, which is diagnosable then and close to unfixable afterwards.

Which IB components carry the most of the grade?+

External examinations carry most of each subject grade and are marked by the IB in the May session for UAE schools. Internal Assessments are produced by the student, marked by the school and externally moderated, and typically carry 20 to 25 per cent per subject. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are externally assessed and contribute to the award alongside the six subjects, while CAS is completed and documented rather than graded. The practical point is that a large share of each grade has its ceiling set when a topic is chosen.

How much can a tutor legitimately help with an Internal Assessment?+

A tutor may teach the content, explain what each criterion requires, question a research question until it is answerable, work through a comparable example on a different topic, and give honest feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not choose the topic and hand it over, write or rewrite text, produce or process the data, edit prose to a finished state, or supply another student's work as a model. Those are passing off another person's work as the student's own, which risks the whole Diploma rather than one subject grade.

When is the right moment to get help with the Extended Essay?+

At the question-narrowing stage, months before the deadline. The outcome is largely determined by the question: too broad and it cannot be answered in four thousand words, too obscure and the sources are not accessible from Dubai, too much like a topic and the essay stays descriptive and cannot reach the upper bands. Two sessions spent there are worth more than six spent polishing prose later. Support is process coaching only — we do not draft, rewrite or edit an Extended Essay to completion, and the school supervisor remains in charge.

Which IB subjects are hardest to find tutors for in Dubai?+

First-language Arabic at Diploma level and Theory of Knowledge supervision are the tightest, followed by Higher Level Chemistry and Physics in particular windows and the less commonly taken subjects where UAE demand is low. That is true across providers rather than peculiar to us. If you need one of them, ask three to four weeks ahead rather than in the fortnight before a deadline, when every family in Dubai is asking the same question and no provider can conjure good supervision at that notice.

What does an IB tutor cost around Serena?+

An IB specialist teaching online is quoted at AED 200 to 450 or more an hour, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table showing AED 200 to 450+. A qualified subject tutor is AED 150 to 300. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel, and Serena sits at the upper end because the round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes. Those are published market figures; our own rate is quoted after the free trial lesson.

What should happen in a first session with an IB student?+

The student's own marked work should be on the screen: two recent papers, a draft, or the last report with its component breakdown. By the end of the hour the tutor should be able to name which component the marks are leaking from, whether the losses are content, reasoning or command-term misreading, and roughly how many sessions the job needs. What should not happen is a generic diagnostic test or a conversation about which topics feel hard, because students cannot see their own command-term errors from the inside.

Do I need separate tutors for Higher and Standard Level subjects?+

You need a tutor matched to each level, which sometimes means the same person and often does not. Higher and Standard Level are different courses rather than the same course at different speeds: in Mathematics, Higher Level sits an additional paper worth 20 per cent built on sustained reasoning; in the sciences, Higher Level carries additional content inside the same themes. A tutor comfortable at Standard Level is not automatically comfortable with the Higher Level extensions, and the honest ones say so when asked.

Are tutors teaching Serena students allowed to work in the UAE?+

Private tutoring here requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years according to u.ae. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, applying through MoHRE's Private Tutor Licensing service. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any amount quoted at you as unverified.

Can you tell me the May exam dates for my child's subjects?+

No, and we would be wary of any page that does. ibo.org blocks automated fetching, which means no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and an unverified date is worse than none when a family books travel around it. What we can say is that UAE schools sit the May session and that in Dubai schools the internal coursework deadlines fall weeks earlier than the IB's. Ask your child's IB coordinator for both and plan from the earlier one.

Does the Dubai regulator approve IB tutors?+

No, and any provider implying it does is making a claim worth challenging. KHDA is responsible for overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, which is a statement about KHDA rather than an endorsement of any tutoring service. The permit that applies to individual private tutors is issued by MoHRE, not KHDA. A KHDA Educational Services Permit exists for training institutes with premises in Dubai; IB Gram holds none, claims none, and has no UAE office or centre.

Ask the five questions, then decide

If you are searching for an IB tutor near me in Serena, the shortlist matters less than the questions. Which programme and level, and what changes at that level. Which subject guide, and when did it change. What are the Internal Assessment criteria called and worth. What will you not do with that assessment. And what does the core require. Send us your child's programme, subject, level and two marked papers, and you will get straight answers plus a free first lesson with the tutor who would continue. Teaching is live, one-to-one and online.
