IB Chemistry Tutor in Serena

Families in Serena asking about an IB chemistry tutor usually want to know two things: can the grade move, and what will it cost. Both are answerable. This page prices the moves in AED, separates Standard from Higher Level demands, and explains what the data booklet gives a student so nobody pays to memorise it. Teaching is one-to-one, live online, first lesson free.

  • Each grade move priced by the sessions it realistically needs
  • What the data booklet provides, so nothing is memorised twice
  • Investigation help timed before the research question is locked
  • Free first lesson with the matched tutor, built on marked papers

IB & IGCSE in Serena

What a chemistry grade move costs, and why it varies so much

Serena sits off Al Qudra Road at the outer edge of the Dubailand belt, among clusters including Bella Casa and Casa Viva. Chemistry enquiries from this community almost always arrive as a grade: a 5 on the report with a 7 as the target, or a mock at 4 that nobody can explain. That framing is useful, because grade moves in chemistry can be priced once the cause is known.

The variation is extreme, and it is the single most important thing for a family to understand before committing money. A curly-arrow habit in organic mechanisms costs four to eight sessions and recovers marks in every question where a mechanism appears. An unsecured bonding foundation from DP1 costs twenty to thirty sessions, because every later topic assumes it. Both present identically to a parent as 'struggling with chemistry', and the difference between them at the specialist band is roughly AED 8,000.

Published Dubai rates put IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more an hour, with TutorChase at AED 270, Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table at AED 200 to 450+. A qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 can serve Standard Level content competently. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 including travel, per Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, with Serena at the upper end because the round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE — that is an India-only service — and has no UAE office or centre. Serena students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which removes the travel premium rather than discounting it. For chemistry the online format gives up very little, because mechanisms, equations and processed data are worked on a shared screen and the annotated file is kept rather than lost in a notebook.

What follows is the arithmetic and the chemistry behind it. Each grade move with its session count and AED figure. What Standard and Higher Level actually demand differently. What the data booklet supplies, so no family pays for sessions memorising material that is handed to the student in the examination. The acid-base and redox wall that stops mid-course students. Where a DP2 spring budget works hardest. And the investigation, where timing decides whether the money does anything at all.

One standing note: we publish no IB exam or results dates, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and a date a family plans around must be checkable. UAE schools sit the May session. Specification versions are revised, so confirm weightings and components for your child's cohort with the school rather than treating any page as final, this one included.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry support requests from this belt cluster at three stages, and what the money buys differs sharply at each.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences, chemistry strand

Four criteria marked 0 to 8, with the design and processing strands carrying real weight. Students here lose marks on investigation design rather than on chemistry, which is cheap to fix — a handful of sessions reading criterion wording against the task sheet — and prevents a far more expensive problem in DP1.

MYP provision in the Dubailand belt is thinner than Diploma provision, so Serena students on this track often travel further. Because design and processing tasks need concentration, they are the work most worth a weekend morning rather than a late weekday slot after a long commute.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma year one

The year where money spent prevents money spent later. Bonding and structure are the foundation every subsequent topic assumes, and a student who does not secure them in DP1 carries a compounding deficit. This is also when the Scientific Investigation question is chosen, which is the cheapest high-value intervention in the course.

In most Dubai schools the chemistry investigation deadline lands in the same few weeks as two or three other internal assessments. Money spent late is therefore spent in competition with every other subject at once, which is why the DP1 timing matters more than the DP1 amount.

DP2Ages 17-19 · Year 13

Diploma year two

Content finishes and the grade turns on whether knowledge converts into marks. Spending here should be ordered: mechanisms and calculation technique first, then the data-analysis component, then whichever of equilibrium or energetics the marked papers keep showing. A general weekly arrangement is the least efficient use of a DP2 budget.

UAE schools sit the May session, and we publish no IB dates because they cannot be verified from ibo.org. The planning anchors are the school's mock week and internal deadlines, both available from the IB coordinator in writing at the start of the year.

What chemistry is required for

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chemical engineering and most life-science degrees expect chemistry, commonly at Higher Level. That raises the stakes on spending: a family whose child needs Higher Level chemistry for a medical route is buying a grade with a hard requirement attached, which justifies the specialist band in a way general support does not.

Requirements vary by university and by programme, so read the specific programme pages rather than relying on a general rule, and treat no tutoring as a requirement for admission anywhere. For Ministry of Education equivalency the British-track rules are published while no IB points threshold has been read on moe.gov.ae.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the areas of the course Serena families ask about, each with the session count it typically needs and what it returns.

Organic mechanisms

SL and HL

Four to eight sessions and the fastest grade movement in the subject. The signature error is a curly arrow drawn from the wrong electron pair, which loses the same mark in every mechanism question and is invisible to the student because the rest of the answer looks right.

The mole concept and stoichiometry

SL and HL

Three to six sessions. Usually a fluency problem under time pressure rather than a comprehension problem, which means timed calculation practice rather than re-explanation is what moves it. Underpins every quantitative question in the course.

Bonding and structure

SL and HL

Twenty to thirty sessions if it was never secured in DP1, because structure-to-property reasoning is assumed by every later topic. The most expensive gap in the course and the one most worth money in DP1 rather than DP2.

Periodicity and trends

SL and HL

Two to four sessions. Trend questions reward explanation in terms of nuclear charge and shielding, and students who state the trend instead of its cause lose marks consistently. A language and reasoning habit rather than a content gap.

Energetics and thermodynamics

SL and HL

Fifteen to twenty-five sessions where it has been avoided since DP1, because avoidance compounds. Enthalpy cycles at both levels, with entropy and Gibbs free energy at Higher Level. Front-loading it is markedly cheaper than repairing it.

Rates and equilibrium

SL and HL

Six to ten sessions. Equilibrium punishes students who recite Le Chatelier without reasoning about the system, and rate laws at Higher Level require interpreting data rather than quoting an equation. Responds to question-led teaching, not to re-reading notes.

Acid-base behaviour

SL and HL

Four to eight sessions, and a reliable mid-course wall. The logarithmic scale defeats students who have not practised it, buffers are conceptually slippery, and titration curve interpretation is examined in both written papers and the investigation.

Redox and electrochemistry

SL and HL

Four to eight sessions. Oxidation-state bookkeeping and half-equation balancing are procedural and learnable; electrode potentials at Higher Level require careful sign handling of exactly the kind that costs marks in volume.

Paper 1A and 1B

SL and HL

Three to five sessions. Multiple choice rewards timing and elimination technique, while the data-analysis section rewards processing unseen data with uncertainties — a component deliberately practised by almost nobody, which makes it good value.

Paper 2 extended response

SL and HL

Six to ten sessions, and the largest share of the grade. Marks go to structured reasoning, correct equations with state symbols, and answers matching the command term. They are lost to abandoning a part-answered calculation instead of stating the intended method.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL

Three to six sessions, timed before the research question is locked. Worth 20 per cent of the grade and marked on four criteria of six marks each. The ceiling is set at the design stage, which is why the timing matters more than the number of hours.

Calculation technique and significant figures

SL and HL

One to two sessions and the cheapest purchase in the subject. Rearranging before substituting, carrying units, not rounding mid-calculation, and quoting a defensible precision. Silent marks lost in volume across both papers.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy chemistry support, in ascending order of total cost. All delivered live online, one-to-one or in a small pair, with no travel on either side.

Pair slot on the same level

Two students at the same level in the same course sharing a session, which splits a specialist rate materially. Easy to arrange between Serena, Villanova and Mudon because nobody travels. Works well for mechanisms and calculation practice, where a second student reasoning aloud genuinely helps, and is unsuitable for investigation supervision.

  • Lowest cost per student of the one-to-one formats
  • Same level and similar starting point required
  • Good for mechanisms, equations and calculation drills
  • Not used for investigation supervision, which must stay individual

Targeted grade-move block

Four to ten sessions aimed at the cause the marked papers identify: mechanisms, calculation fluency, acid-base, redox. At the specialist band that is roughly AED 800 to 4,500, with a session count and finish date stated at the start. For most DP2 families this is the best value purchase in the subject.

  • Starts from two marked papers, not a placement test
  • Session count and finish date in writing
  • Cheapest fixes scheduled first, by design
  • Repeatable if a second cause appears after a mock

Weekly one-to-one across the year

Roughly thirty sessions, which at the specialist band is AED 6,000 to 13,500. The right purchase where the gap is structural — unsecured bonding, avoided energetics — rather than habitual. What justifies it is a termly review against marked work asking plainly whether the arrangement still earns its place.

  • For genuine content deficits, not inefficiency
  • Reviewed each term against marked papers
  • Pairs well with a short separate block on technique
  • Ends when the deficit closes, not when the year does

01

What each chemistry grade move costs

Here is the table families want before they commit, priced at the specialist band that Higher Level chemistry genuinely needs. It prices the move rather than the hour, because the hour is the least informative number in the decision.

The pattern is that lower and middle moves are cheaper per grade than the top one. A 5 to a 6 is usually one or two identified causes plus calculation discipline — four to ten sessions. A 6 to a 7 is harder, because the remaining marks sit in the extended-response reasoning and in pace, and because at that level the student has to be reliable across the whole course rather than strong in most of it. That is twelve to twenty sessions and it cannot be compressed into a fortnight.

The second pattern concerns what delay does. Habit and technique work stays cheap almost until the examination: command terms, significant figures, mechanism conventions can be fixed in April and still pay. Structural content work becomes progressively less effective and, in the final weeks, becomes damage limitation. So a DP1 family with limited money should spend it on bonding and energetics; a DP2 family in March should spend it on technique and the data-analysis component.

Our first session exists to place a student in one of these rows honestly, including the row that reads four sessions and then stop. In chemistry that is a common correct answer, because the subject's signature error — the curly arrow from the wrong electron pair — is both high-frequency and quick to end.

Standard and Higher Level: different purchases

Parents often ask for 'a chemistry tutor' without specifying the level, and the two are not the same product. Higher Level carries additional content inside the same course structure, longer papers, and a markedly higher demand for quantitative reasoning. A tutor comfortable at Standard Level is not automatically comfortable with Higher Level energetics or electrode potentials.

The cost consequence is direct. Standard Level work can usually be served well by a qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 an hour. Higher Level work, particularly in energetics, thermodynamics and the quantitative end of equilibrium, genuinely wants the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 or more. Paying the specialist rate for Standard Level content is overspending; paying the qualified-tutor rate for Higher Level thermodynamics is usually a false economy that shows up in a mock.

The teaching differs too, not just the content. At Standard Level the marginal gains are often in reliability: calculation discipline, command terms, state symbols, mechanism conventions. At Higher Level those still matter and are usually already partly in place, so the gains come from extended reasoning across multi-part questions and from the additional content that arrives late in DP2.

Confirm the level from the school in writing, and confirm the current component weightings for your child's cohort while you are at it, since specification versions are revised. The table below sets out the practical differences that should shape a plan and a budget. One further point for families with two children in the course at different levels: the two are separate arrangements rather than one, and a tutor who is excellent for the Standard Level student may be the wrong match for the Higher Level one.

What the data booklet gives you, so nobody pays twice

  • Supplied: periodic table, constants, equations, spectral data, electrode potentials, bond and formation enthalpies
  • Not supplied: when an equation applies, sign conventions, structure deduction, cycle method
  • Do not pay for sessions memorising anything printed in the booklet
  • Work with it open from DP1, exactly as in the examination

This is the section no tutoring page writes and every chemistry family should read, because it prevents money being spent on memorisation that the examination makes unnecessary. Students sit chemistry papers with a data booklet, and knowing what is in it changes what revision should contain.

The booklet supplies the periodic table, physical constants, a range of equations, spectral reference data including infrared absorption ranges and proton nuclear magnetic resonance shifts, standard electrode potentials, bond enthalpies and enthalpies of formation. A student who spends three sessions memorising electrode potentials or bond enthalpy values is spending money to duplicate a document that will be on the desk in front of them.

What the booklet does not supply is the reasoning. It gives an equation and not the circumstances in which it applies. It gives electrode potentials and not the sign convention for combining them. It gives spectral data and not the skill of deducing a structure from a spectrum. It gives bond enthalpies and not the method for using them in an enthalpy cycle. Every one of those is examined, and every one of them is where sessions should go.

The practical instruction for a family paying by the hour: make sure the student works with the data booklet open from the start of DP1, as they will in the examination, and that sessions are spent on deduction rather than recall of anything printed in it. Confirm the current booklet contents against the official version for your child's cohort — it is published by the IB and should be referenced and linked rather than reproduced by any tutor.

04

Acid-base and redox: the mid-course wall

  • Acid-base: logarithms, buffers and titration curve interpretation, examined twice over
  • Redox: procedural bookkeeping that rewards one reliable method
  • Both are four to eight session problems with a high mark return
  • Comfort with both is a good sign that no structural gap exists elsewhere

A specific pattern arrives from this belt in the second term of DP1 and again in DP2: a student who was coping stops coping, and the topic is almost always acid-base behaviour or redox. It is worth understanding because it is cheap to address and expensive to ignore.

Acid-base trips students for three reasons. The logarithmic scale is genuinely unfamiliar, and a student who has not practised manipulating logarithms arithmetically will stall regardless of understanding the chemistry. Buffers require holding two competing equilibria in mind at once. And titration curve interpretation is examined in the written papers and frequently appears in investigations, so weakness here costs marks twice.

Redox trips students for a different reason: it is bookkeeping, and bookkeeping rewards method rather than insight. Oxidation-state assignment, half-equation balancing in acidic and basic conditions, and the combination of electrode potentials with correct signs are all procedural. Students who invent their own method each time lose marks consistently; students taught one reliable procedure stop losing them within a few sessions.

The budget point is that both of these are four to eight session problems with a high mark return, which places them firmly in the efficient half of the spending order. They are also the topics where a Higher Level student's quantitative weakness shows first, which makes them a useful early diagnostic: a student who handles both comfortably is unlikely to have a structural problem elsewhere. If a report drops sharply in the second term of DP1, these two topics are the first place to look before anybody concludes that the course is too hard.

05

Where a DP2 spring budget works hardest

  • 1. Calculation technique and significant figures: 1-2 sessions
  • 2. Command terms with a marked paper: 1-2 sessions
  • 3. Organic mechanisms, if the habit is still present: 4-8 sessions
  • 4. Paper 1 data analysis: 3-5 sessions on a neglected component
  • 5. Extended-response technique: slowest to improve, largest share of the grade

Suppose it is the spring of DP2 and a family has a limited amount to spend before the May session. The order matters more than the amount, and the right order is not the one most arrangements follow.

First, calculation technique and significant figures: one or two sessions, recovering silent marks spread across both papers. Second, command terms, with the student's own marked paper in front of them — another one or two sessions and the single most under-rated purchase in the subject. Third, organic mechanisms, if the curly-arrow habit is still present, because it returns marks in every mechanism question for four to eight sessions of work.

Fourth, the data-analysis component of Paper 1, which is practised deliberately by almost nobody because revision defaults to content. Processing unseen data with uncertainties, plotting something interpretable, and writing a conclusion the data supports is three to five sessions on a component where marks are genuinely available. Fifth, extended-response technique on Paper 2, which carries the largest share of the grade and is the slowest to improve.

What should not be bought in the spring of DP2 is a content programme on a structural gap. It is too late for the money to work as intended, and the honest version of that conversation is to aim for reliability across what the student does know rather than coverage of what they do not. Families told that plainly spend less and finish better than families sold a rescue.

06

Pair, group and one-to-one: the chemistry economics

Because chemistry sits in the specialist band, format choices move real money. The three options are not equivalent and the right one depends on the diagnosis rather than the budget.

Group science classes at centres in Motor City and Sports City are the cheapest hourly option, with monthly packages advertised in this market from around AED 799 for eight sessions. They deliver a fixed sequence at a fixed pace, which suits a student who is broadly on track and wants more exposure, and they cannot reach an individual mechanisms or energetics gap. Counted honestly, they also cost around two hours of household time per session from Serena, given a thirty to forty minute drive each way plus waiting.

A pair session is the underused middle option in this belt. Two students at the same level sharing a slot splits the specialist rate while keeping attention individual enough to diagnose, and chemistry suits it unusually well: mechanism practice and calculation drills benefit from a second student reasoning aloud, and both get the same annotated file afterwards. What a pair cannot do is investigation supervision, which must stay individual and confidential.

One-to-one is the dearest per hour and the cheapest per outcome where the cause is identified. The rule we would give any family: if the marked papers name the cause, buy one-to-one and buy few hours. If they do not, buy two or three sessions of diagnosis first, because buying thirty hours to discover the cause costs far more than three hours spent finding it.

The investigation, where timing is the whole of the value

  • Four criteria, six marks each, 24 in total, 20% of the grade, 3,000 words maximum
  • Research design sets the ceiling; test the question before collecting data
  • Three to six sessions early protect the component; the same money late buys presentation
  • No tutor may design it, produce data, or write any part of it

The Scientific Investigation is 20 per cent of the chemistry grade, runs to a maximum of 3,000 words, and is marked against four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. For a family thinking about cost, it is the one component where the same money produces completely different results depending on when it is spent.

Research design sets the ceiling. A viable chemistry question needs a variable the student can change, a quantity they can measure with the school's equipment, and the other relevant variables controllable in that laboratory. Questions that fail that test cannot score well on the later criteria, because there is nothing to process and nothing to conclude. Testing a question properly takes about twenty minutes of a competent tutor's time.

Spend three to six sessions before the question is locked and the data collected, and you are protecting a fifth of the subject grade for roughly AED 600 to 2,700. Spend the same money in the final fortnight and you are buying presentation improvements on something already capped — better structure, cleaner graphs, a tidier evaluation, and no change to the ceiling. That is the single clearest timing effect anywhere in the Diploma.

The boundary matters here more than anywhere, because completed reports are openly sold in this market. A tutor may explain criteria, test a research question, question reasoning and comment on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the investigation, produce or process the data, write or rewrite text, or supply a previous student's report. Those are passing off another person's work as the student's own, which risks the Diploma rather than one grade.

08

What cannot be bought, and what is free

  • Not for sale: promises about final grades, completed coursework, unevidenced examiner status
  • Free: IB documents and the data booklet, the school's marked mock, school subject clinics
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, Resolution 710 of 2023 (u.ae)
  • No regulator approval held or implied, and no UAE office or centre

Two short lists finish the cost picture: things on sale in this market that should not be, and things being sold that are free.

Not for sale at any price: a promise about the final grade, because nobody controls an examination outcome and a refund claim means nothing without terms published on the same screen. Completed coursework, which is misconduct rather than a service and risks the qualification rather than a grade. And premium rates justified by examiner status that cannot be evidenced — we do not describe tutors as examiners where current status is unverifiable, and examiner status gives no access to marking, boundaries or paper content in any case.

Free, and sometimes charged for: IB syllabus documents, the data booklet, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary information, all published by the IB and properly referenced and linked rather than resold as a resource pack. Your child's marked mock, which is a better diagnostic than any paid placement test. And the school's own support — subject clinics, pre-mock revision, extra marking, and a head of department who will say candidly how the cohort is doing.

One last free check, if you are hiring an individual directly. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, through MoHRE's Private Tutor Licensing service with a two-working-day completion time and no listed fee. Because it is free, nobody should be adding a licensing cost to a quote, and no fine schedule is published, so any penalty figure quoted at you is unverified. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval, has no UAE office or centre, and names no school as a client.

Where we tutor

Serena and the communities that compare chemistry quotes

Chemistry sits in the upper price band, so distance and specialism both move quotes noticeably. These are Serena's comparison points.

Serena

Bella Casa and Casa Viva clusters off Al Qudra Road. Among the furthest-out addresses in the belt, so an in-home chemistry quote carries a substantial travel component on top of an already specialist rate.

Villanova

Adjacent, same travel band, nearly identical school intake. The easiest community to arrange a shared pair slot with, which splits a specialist rate without either family travelling anywhere.

Mudon

Slightly closer in. Households with two children in the sciences often buy twice over when one targeted block each would have done, which is the most common overspend we see from this pair of communities.

Remraam

Furthest out, with the highest in-home quotes and the thinnest availability. The clearest case for removing travel from the arrangement rather than trying to negotiate the rate down.

Arabian Ranches 3

Closer for most visiting tutors, so in-home quotes sit roughly AED 30 to 50 per hour below Serena's for the same person. Useful context before assuming a neighbour simply negotiated better terms.

Town Square and Motor City

Where group science classes are sold, with monthly packages advertised in this market from around AED 799 for eight sessions. Suited to consolidation rather than a diagnosed mechanisms or energetics gap.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and two marked papers

Higher or Standard Level, the school and year group, and photographs of two marked papers. Those papers place a student in one of the grade-move rows within minutes, which is the only honest basis for a session estimate. A description of what feels hard is a much weaker signal than their own marked work.

  2. 02

    Sessions estimated, then priced

We say how many sessions the move looks like, then quote. Chemistry cases range from four sessions to thirty, so a single headline rate quoted before anyone has read a paper tells a family nothing about what they will actually spend.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

A real lesson with the person who would continue, no card required. It tests the diagnosis and the fit together: whether the cause is habit, technique or structure, and whether the pair of them work well. If the style does not suit your child, say so and we match again.

  4. 04

    A plan in spending order

Technique and mechanisms before general content, investigation coaching before the research question is locked, and nothing spent memorising material the data booklet supplies. Each item carries a session count and a finish date rather than running on into the next term.

  5. 05

    Marked strictly, reviewed each term

Work is marked the way an examiner marks it: state symbols, units, significant figures, command terms and mechanism conventions treated seriously rather than ticked. Each term the plan is reviewed against marked evidence, and when a block is done we say so instead of extending it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The move priced, not the hour

A 5 to a 6 and a 6 to a 7 are different jobs with different session counts, and repairing an unsecured foundation is a different job again. Pricing the move is the only way a family can judge what they are committing to, and it occasionally means recommending fewer sessions than they came to buy.

Nothing spent on what the booklet supplies

Students sit chemistry papers with a data booklet containing constants, equations, spectral data, electrode potentials and bond enthalpies. Sessions go on deduction and method, not on memorising a document that will be on the desk. Working with it open from DP1 is part of the plan.

Timing on the investigation, not volume

Research design sets the ceiling on a component worth 20 per cent of the grade. Three to six sessions before the question is locked protect it; the same money in the final fortnight buys presentation on something already capped. That is the clearest timing effect in the Diploma.

No travel premium on a long drive

Serena is among the furthest-out addresses in this belt, so an in-home arrangement adds the top of the AED 50 to 150 hourly travel premium to an already specialist rate. Online removes it, and chemistry loses little: mechanisms and processed data work well on a shared screen that saves the file.

Claims you can check

Every AED band names its publisher. No promises about final grades, no completed coursework, no resold IB material, no unevidenced examiner claims, no regulator approval, no UAE office, and no IB exam date — because ibo.org blocks automated verification.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Serena: your questions answered

What does it cost to move IB chemistry from a 5 to a 7?+

Usually two stages rather than one. A 5 to a 6 is typically eight to twelve sessions aimed at one or two identified causes plus calculation discipline, which at the specialist band of AED 200 to 450 an hour is roughly AED 1,600 to 5,400. A 6 to a 7 is twelve to twenty sessions and AED 2,400 to 9,000, because the remaining marks sit in extended-response reasoning and pace and because reliability has to extend across the whole course rather than most of it.

Why do chemistry quotes vary so much for the same student?+

Because the diagnosis varies, and most providers quote before making one. A curly-arrow habit in organic mechanisms is four to eight sessions. An unsecured bonding foundation from DP1 is twenty to thirty, because every later topic assumes it. Both look identical to a parent — a student struggling with chemistry — and at the specialist band the difference is around AED 8,000. Two marked papers distinguish them in minutes, which is why a session estimate should come before a rate.

Does my child need a specialist tutor for Standard Level chemistry?+

Usually not. A qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 an hour can serve Standard Level content competently, and paying the specialist band of AED 200 to 450 or more for it is overspending. Higher Level is different: energetics, thermodynamics and the quantitative end of equilibrium genuinely want the specialist band, and the qualified-tutor rate there is often a false economy that surfaces in a mock. Confirm the level from the school in writing before agreeing anything.

What is in the IB chemistry data booklet?+

The periodic table, physical constants, a range of equations, spectral reference data including infrared absorption ranges and proton nuclear magnetic resonance shifts, standard electrode potentials, bond enthalpies and enthalpies of formation. Students sit the papers with it. What it does not give is the reasoning: when an equation applies, the sign conventions for combining electrode potentials, how to deduce a structure from a spectrum, or the method for an enthalpy cycle. Sessions should go there, never on memorising its contents.

Where does the first AED 1,000 of chemistry support go?+

Organic mechanisms, almost always. The signature error is a curly arrow drawn from the wrong electron pair, which loses the same mark in every mechanism question and is invisible to the student because the rest of the answer looks right. Three or four strictly marked sessions usually end it permanently. Next fastest is calculation technique and significant figures — carrying units, not rounding mid-calculation, quoting a defensible precision — which is one or two sessions and recovers marks across both papers.

My child was fine and then hit a wall. What is it likely to be?+

Acid-base behaviour or redox, in most cases. Acid-base trips students on the logarithmic scale, on buffers requiring two equilibria held at once, and on titration curve interpretation, which is examined in the written papers and often again in the investigation. Redox trips them because it is procedural bookkeeping — oxidation states, half-equation balancing, electrode potential signs — and students who invent a method each time lose marks consistently. Both are four to eight session problems with a high return.

Which chemistry gaps turn into a twenty-session programme?+

Structural ones. A student who never securely learned bonding and structure in DP1 is carrying a deficit that touches every later topic, which is a content programme of twenty to thirty sessions rather than a block. Energetics avoided since the first term behaves the same way by DP2, because avoidance compounds. Both get markedly worse with delay, unlike habit problems, so a DP1 family with limited funds should spend there rather than on technique that will still be cheap in April.

When should we pay for help with the chemistry investigation?+

Before the research question is locked and the data collected. Research design sets the ceiling on a component worth 20 per cent of the grade: a viable question needs a variable the student can change, a quantity measurable with the school's equipment, and the other variables controllable. Three to six sessions at that stage cost roughly AED 600 to 2,700 and protect the component. The same money in the final fortnight buys structure and cleaner graphs on something already capped.

Can a pair session work for chemistry, or does it have to be one-to-one?+

Pairs work unusually well in chemistry, provided both students are at the same level with similar starting points. Mechanism practice and calculation drills benefit from a second student reasoning aloud, the specialist rate is split, and both keep the same annotated file. Because nobody travels, a Serena student and a Villanova or Mudon student can share without either family driving. What a pair cannot do is investigation supervision, which must stay individual and confidential.

Is it too late to start chemistry tutoring in the spring of DP2?+

Not for technique, and largely yes for structure. In order, the spring money works best on calculation discipline and significant figures, then command terms with a marked paper in front of the student, then organic mechanisms if the habit persists, then the Paper 1 data-analysis component which almost nobody practises deliberately. What does not work is a content programme on a structural gap: the honest aim then is reliability across what the student knows rather than coverage of what they do not.

Will a chemistry tutor visit our villa in Serena?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram teaches UAE students one-to-one over live video, there is no IB Gram office or centre in the country, and home visits are a service we run only in India. Independent in-home chemistry tutors work in this belt at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Serena at the upper end because the round trip is eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes. Over twenty sessions the travel element commonly adds AED 1,000 to 3,000 and buys presence rather than better teaching.

Are group science classes a reasonable substitute for one-to-one chemistry?+

For consolidation when a student is broadly on track, yes, and packages in this market are advertised from around AED 799 for eight sessions. For a diagnosed cause, no: a group delivers one sequence at one pace and cannot reach a mechanisms or energetics problem. Counted properly the group option also costs about two hours of household time per session from Serena, given the drive to Motor City and the waiting. For a named cause, a short one-to-one block is usually cheaper to the finish line.

What should I never be charged for in chemistry tutoring?+

Anything the IB publishes: syllabus documents, the data booklet, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary information should be referenced and linked, not resold as a resource pack. A paid diagnostic test, because your child's marked mock is better and already exists. Promises about the final grade, which nobody controls. And a premium justified by examiner status that cannot be evidenced, which in any case gives no access to marking, boundaries or paper content.

How are chemistry practicals handled when the teaching is online?+

The apparatus work stays at school, where the equipment, the technician and the safety framework are, and for the Scientific Investigation the student's own experimental work is required rather than preferred. Your child weighs, titrates, heats and records there. Online teaching covers the design, the processing with correct uncertainties, the graphing and the argument — which is where most of the assessed marks sit. Any provider implying a screen replaces the laboratory is overselling, and that should colour their other claims too.

Diagnose first, then buy the sessions

In chemistry the difference between a cheap fix and an expensive programme is roughly AED 8,000, and only marked work tells you which you have. Dig out two marked papers, confirm the level with the school, and send both. You will get an honest placement — habit, technique or structure — a session count, and a rate quoted after the free trial lesson. You will also get a plan that spends nothing on memorising what the data booklet already supplies. Teaching is live, one-to-one and online; the laboratory stays at school.
