IGCSE Science Tutor in Oud Metha

Parents searching for an IGCSE science tutor in Oud Metha are usually asking one question underneath: is there anybody near us who actually knows this syllabus? The honest answer depends on a code you may not have been told. Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 are different courses with different papers, and a tutor who knows one does not automatically know the other. This page shows you how to find out which one your child sits, then teaches it one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Oud Metha

The question behind the search, answered properly

A family in Oud Metha looking for science help has almost always had the same experience. They ask around the building, somebody recommends a tutor two streets away, the tutor says yes to IGCSE science, and three weeks later the Year 11 student is being taught material that is not on their paper. Nobody involved was dishonest. The word science covers at least five distinct Cambridge qualifications and three Pearson ones, and the difference between them is not a matter of emphasis.

So the first thing this page does is tell you how to find out what your child is actually sitting. It is on the exam entry statement the school issues, and it is a four-digit number for Cambridge or a code beginning with four for Pearson. Cambridge Biology is 0610, Chemistry 0620, Physics 0625, Combined Science 0653 and Co-ordinated Sciences 0654. Pearson International GCSE Biology is 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1, Physics 4PH1 and Double Award Science 4SD0. Ask the school office for the statement if you have not seen it. Everything that follows depends on it.

The second thing is the honest part. The pool of people within a short drive of Oud Metha who have taught a specific one of those codes to examination, repeatedly, and know where its mark scheme is unforgiving, is not large. Oud Metha sits in a dense and well-schooled part of Dubai, but it is a British, Indian and IB mix rather than a single-board cluster, and science is three subjects not one. A Chemistry 0620 specialist who is also fluent in Physics 0625 practical papers is a particular person, and geography is a poor way to find them.

Delivering lessons online solves that, and IB Gram delivers to Oud Metha families one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. The practical gain is specific to this search. Instead of choosing between the two or three science tutors who can reach your building by 5pm, you choose from everybody who can teach your child's code at 5pm Gulf Standard Time. The shortlist stops being a map problem and becomes a syllabus problem, which is the problem you actually have.

The rest of this page is the working. It sets out the board differences with codes and papers, explains the Core and Extended tier decision and what it does to the grade ceiling, describes how practical science is assessed when there is no laboratory in the room, names where marks are lost paper by paper, gives the June and November series dates from Cambridge's and Pearson's own pages, prices the Bur Dubai market in AED with attribution, and sets out what the Ministry of Education equivalency rules actually require. No figure here is unattributed and no exam date is restated without its source.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An IGCSE science course does not sit alone. It follows a lower-secondary stage that decides how ready a student is, and it feeds a post-16 route that decides which tier they needed. These are the stages either side of it, and what each one changes.

LSAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary

Science at this stage is taught as one subject with three strands, assessed through Checkpoint tests rather than public examinations. Cambridge runs Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The strand that predicts IGCSE difficulty most reliably is not recall. It is handling data: reading a table, plotting it, and saying what it shows without being told.

In the Bur Dubai belt this stage is where a parent can act cheaply. A Year 8 student in Oud Metha who cannot plot a graph unaided is a Year 11 student who will lose practical-paper marks, and the repair at Year 8 is a handful of sessions rather than a term. Almost nobody buys tuition here, which is why almost everybody buys it later.

Cambridge IGCSE sciences

Three separate sciences at 0610, 0620 and 0625, or the combined routes at 0653 and 0654. Each separate science is tiered into Core and Extended, with a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. The tier decision is made by the school, usually in Year 10, and it sets the grade ceiling for the whole course.

Cambridge runs its IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Your child's Oud Metha or Bur Dubai school knows its zone; ask.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences

Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1 each sit in a single tier with two written papers, and Double Award Science is 4SD0. There is no separate practical examination: practical knowledge is assessed inside the written papers, which changes how apparatus and method should be revised. A student who prepares for a practical paper that does not exist has wasted weeks.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so always check the live timetable on qualifications.pearson.com rather than a restated date.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma and International A Level, post-16

Where the tier decision shows its consequences. A student who took Core tier, or Combined Science, arrives at Diploma Chemistry or International A Level Physics with a genuine content gap rather than a confidence gap. Extended tier, or the Co-ordinated double award, is the route schools in this belt expect before they timetable a science at Higher Level.

Diploma provision reachable from Oud Metha sits mainly in Al Jaddaf and Dubai Festival City, while the British post-16 route is available closer to home in Bur Dubai. If the Diploma is the plan, ask the receiving school in Year 10 which tier and which code it expects, and make the tier decision with that answer in hand rather than after results day.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science is three subjects and two boards, and each combination examines differently. These are the courses we teach for students in Oud Metha, written as what each one actually assesses rather than as a list of topics.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620)

Core and Extended

The mole concept is the hinge of the whole course and the place a weak start is hardest to repair later. Electrolysis and the organic families follow it. Extended-tier questions ask for calculation chains where Core asks for recall, so the tier changes the kind of practice needed, not only the amount.

Physics (Cambridge 0625)

Core and Extended

Electricity and waves take the largest share of lost marks, and almost all of it is unit handling and rearrangement rather than concept. A student who writes the right physics in the wrong unit loses the mark, every time, and no amount of content revision changes that.

Biology (Cambridge 0610)

Core and Extended

Deceptively verbal. The content reads easily and the marks are lost in precision: the difference between diffusion and osmosis stated exactly, the genetics cross set out fully, the extended response that answers all three parts of the question rather than the first.

Co-ordinated Sciences (Cambridge 0654)

Double Award

Covers all three sciences and counts as two qualifications. The common failure is treating it as three light courses rather than one examined whole: the papers move between sciences without warning, and students who revise in silos lose time switching.

Combined Science (Cambridge 0653)

Core and Extended

One qualification across all three sciences at reduced depth. A reasonable choice for a student heading to a non-science post-16 route, and a real problem for one who later wants Diploma Chemistry, because the mole and electrolysis coverage is thinner than the Diploma assumes.

Chemistry (Pearson 4CH1)

Single tier

Two written papers, no separate practical examination, and practical knowledge examined inside the theory. Apparatus, method and expected observations therefore have to be revised as content, which is a different habit from preparing for a Cambridge practical test.

Physics (Pearson 4PH1)

Single tier

Single-tier entry means no grade ceiling set in Year 10, which suits a student who improves late. The formula handling is the same discipline as Cambridge; the difference is in how practical method appears in the written papers.

Biology (Pearson 4BI1)

Single tier

Extended-response marks reward structure heavily. Students who have been taught to answer in bullet points lose marks they knew the content for, and that is a technique fix rather than a revision fix.

Double Award Science (Pearson 4SD0)

Single tier

Pearson's two-qualification route across the three sciences. Useful where a school timetable cannot fit three separate sciences, and it keeps most post-16 doors open, but confirm the receiving school's entry expectations before relying on that.

Mathematics (Pearson 4MA1)

Foundation and Higher

Included because science marks depend on it. Standard form, ratio, rearrangement and percentage change appear in every science paper, and a student on Foundation-tier maths will hit a ceiling in Extended-tier science that looks like a science problem.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to work, chosen by what the student needs rather than by what is convenient to sell. All of them are delivered live over video on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly one-to-one, one named science

A fixed weekly slot on a single syllabus code, with the student working past-paper questions rather than watching them worked. This is the default for a Year 10 or Year 11 student whose marks are concentrated in one subject. The market band for a qualified subject tutor working online is roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing from AED 150 for IGCSE.

  • Syllabus code confirmed from the exam entry before session one
  • Diagnostic questions across the whole paper, not the current topic
  • Written note after each session naming the next target
  • One recurring weekday slot, typically 4.30pm to 7pm

All three sciences, rotated

For students taking separate sciences who are behind in more than one. Sessions rotate across Biology, Chemistry and Physics on a planned cycle rather than reacting to whichever test came back worst. Rotation sounds inefficient and is usually cheaper than three separate weekly slots, because the method work transfers between the three.

  • A cycle set at the start, not reshuffled weekly
  • Shared method work on units, graphs and extended response
  • One error log covering all three papers
  • Suits Co-ordinated and Double Award candidates particularly well

Pre-series intensive blocks

Two or three sessions a week across a fixed four to eight week window before the June or November series. The hourly rate does not change, the total does, so the block is planned against the official timetable and ends on a stated date rather than drifting into the holidays.

  • Built backwards from the live official timetable
  • One full paper sat under timed conditions each week
  • Topic choice driven by the mark breakdown, not syllabus order
  • Ends on a named date agreed in advance

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Oud Metha

01

Step one: find out which syllabus your child is actually sitting

There is a document that answers this and most parents have never been shown it. The exam entry statement issued by the school lists each subject with its board and its syllabus code. For Cambridge the code is four digits: Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620, Physics 0625, Combined Science 0653, Co-ordinated Sciences 0654. For Pearson it begins with a four: Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1, Physics 4PH1, Double Award Science 4SD0. Ask the school office for the statement. It takes one email and it removes the single largest cause of wasted tuition in this market.

Why it matters is not administrative. The two boards examine differently in ways that change what a student should practise. Cambridge separate sciences are tiered and carry either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Pearson sits in one tier with two written papers and assesses practical knowledge inside them. A student revising apparatus diagrams for a Cambridge practical test is doing necessary work; the same student on 4CH1 is preparing for a paper that does not exist, and losing the weeks they needed for extended response.

The table below sets the two boards side by side for the same three subjects. Use it with the entry statement in front of you, not instead of it, and confirm paper structure and weightings with your child's school, because boards revise specifications between cycles and a figure found online can be a cycle out of date. One syllabus code appears across the entire seven-page area cluster researched for this project. Knowing yours is already an advantage.

Is there anybody near Oud Metha who really knows this code?

  • Ask any prospective tutor which code they have taught to examination, and how often
  • Ask what the alternative-to-practical paper requires, and listen for whether it applies
  • Ask where that paper's mark scheme refuses credit; a specialist answers instantly
  • A tutor who says all IGCSE science is the same has answered the question

This is the question the search is really asking, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance. Within a short drive of Oud Metha there are certainly people who can teach secondary science. The number who have taught one specific code to examination, repeatedly, and know where its mark scheme refuses to give credit, is much smaller. Narrow it further to somebody free in the one weekday window your family can use, and in a dense but board-mixed neighbourhood the list can come down to nobody.

That is not a criticism of the area. It is arithmetic. Oud Metha and the Bur Dubai belt serve British, Indian and IB provision simultaneously, so the local tutoring pool is spread across boards rather than concentrated in one. KHDA's 2024-25 figures describe a Dubai market of 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula, with UK 37%, Indian 26%, US 14% and International Baccalaureate 7%. A mixed market produces mixed tutors, and a mixed tutor is exactly the wrong person for a specific paper.

Online delivery is the honest fix, and it is why IB Gram works this way. The constraint stops being who lives nearby and becomes who is free at the hour you need, which is a far larger pool and one you can filter by code. IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE; lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, and home visits are offered only in India. If no specialist in your child's exact code is available in your window, we say so and tell you when one is, rather than putting a general science tutor in the slot and letting the term pass.

03

Core or Extended: the decision that sets the ceiling

For Cambridge separate sciences the school enters each student at Core or Extended tier, usually during Year 10. Core covers less content and reaches a lower maximum grade; Extended covers the full content and reaches the top of the scale. The decision is made on predicted performance, and once made it is difficult to reverse late in Year 11 because the papers differ. Many parents in this belt learn the tier exists only when a mock result arrives with an unexpected cap on it.

The academic consequence is clearest for a student intending a science post-16. Extended tier, or the Co-ordinated double award, is what schools in Bur Dubai and across the Creek expect before timetabling a Diploma science at Higher Level or an International A Level. A Core-tier student can still progress, but arrives with a content gap that takes four to six weeks of focused work to close, and that work is cheapest in the summer before Year 12 rather than in the middle of it.

Where tuition helps most is not in arguing about the tier. It is in making the tier decision on evidence. Three weeks of Extended-tier past-paper questions, marked honestly, tells a family more than a term of predicted grades. If the student can handle the calculation chains, make the case to the school with the papers in hand. If they cannot, the Core decision is correct and the money is better spent elsewhere.

04

How practical science is examined when nobody is in a laboratory

This is the most common worry about online science tuition and it rests on a misunderstanding of how the qualification works. Neither board asks a tutor to supervise an experiment. Cambridge examines practical work either through a practical test sat under examination conditions at the centre, or through an alternative-to-practical written paper. Pearson examines practical knowledge inside its two written papers. In every case the thing being assessed is written: a method described, a reading interpreted, a source of error identified.

That makes the practical component unusually well suited to one-to-one work over video. The student shares the question, the tutor watches the answer being written, and the errors show up immediately: a method with no stated control variable, a table without units in the header, a graph with an awkward scale chosen to avoid the arithmetic, a conclusion that restates the data rather than explaining it. Those are visible on a shared screen in a way they are not visible across a kitchen table while somebody waits.

The school remains responsible for the laboratory work itself, and a tutor should never offer to replace it. What a tutor can do is make sure the student can describe what they did and evaluate it in the language the mark scheme rewards. For Pearson candidates this matters more than parents expect, because apparatus and expected observations have to be revised as content rather than recalled from a lesson. A Bur Dubai student who has done the experiments and cannot write them up is losing marks for writing, not for science.

05

Where IGCSE science marks are actually lost, paper by paper

  • Multiple choice: timed volume, left to the final weeks
  • Theory: answer length matched to the mark allocation
  • Chemistry: show every step of a calculation chain
  • Physics: units and rearrangement before content
  • Practical papers: six pieces of method vocabulary, taught precisely

Multiple choice is lost to speed and to misread stems rather than to ignorance. Students who know the material arrive at the last five questions with four minutes left and guess. The fix is volume under a clock, which needs no insight and can be done late in the course, so it is the cheapest thing on this list and the thing to leave until last.

Theory papers are lost to answer length. The mark allocation is a set of instructions and students treat it as a suggestion: three marks, one sentence. In Biology this is the single largest source of lost marks, because the content reads easily and the precision is where the credit is. In Chemistry it is calculation chains abandoned halfway, where a student who shows the first two steps earns more than one who shows a wrong final answer alone. In Physics it is units and rearrangement, relentlessly.

Practical and alternative-to-practical papers are lost to method vocabulary. Control variable, range, repeat, anomaly, resolution and systematic error are words with precise meanings in a mark scheme and approximate meanings in ordinary speech. A student who writes I did it three times to be accurate has said something the scheme cannot credit. Teaching those six words properly is perhaps two sessions and moves marks in all three sciences at once, which makes it the best value work available on an IGCSE science course.

One further loss is invisible until a paper is marked honestly: question selection order. Students work front to back, spend eleven minutes on an early six-mark question they half know, and reach the final structured question with no time. Teaching a student to scan, bank the questions they can finish, and return to the rest is a technique session rather than a science one. It is also the only intervention on this list that works equally well in Biology, Chemistry and Physics without any subject knowledge changing hands.

06

The June and November series, counted backwards

UAE candidates sit two series, and the planning value of knowing which one comes next is considerable. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only and is not an option for a UAE candidate, so a plan built around it is a plan built around the wrong country.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. For results timing, June 2026 Pearson results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, including the International GCSE November series months before entries for it close, so the live timetable on qualifications.pearson.com is the document to work from rather than any date restated on a page like this one.

One Cambridge administrative detail is worth a parent's attention because it has real consequences. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. If your child is revising from a timetable found online rather than from the one the school issued, check the zone. Then build the eight weeks before the series backwards from the real dates.

What science tuition costs in the Bur Dubai market

Begin at the bottom of the market rather than the top, because that is where most Oud Metha enquiries start. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, both at the budget online tier, typically delivered by university students. For a Year 10 student who needs company and structure rather than paper expertise, that tier can be reasonable. For a Year 11 student eight weeks from a series, a tutor who does not know whether the alternative-to-practical paper applies is not cheap at any price.

One step up, a qualified subject tutor working online is quoted across Dubai at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, reviewed October 2026, with Unitors publishing from AED 150 for IGCSE and from AED 200 for IB. Specialist IB and IGCSE support is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and premium named tutors reach AED 650, as BartyED publishes. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table, with independent home tutors advertising up to AED 500.

The one figure that explains the rest is the monthly package comparison. Advertised rates in Dubai include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. The teaching can be identical; the second price includes a car crossing Bur Dubai twice. None of these are IB Gram prices. Ours follows a free trial lesson and a look at the actual mark breakdown, which is the only basis on which an hourly figure means anything. For context on the wider household budget, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai do not rise for 2026-27.

How many IGCSE subjects the Ministry of Education actually counts

Families in Oud Metha planning a UAE university route need the equivalency rules, and the rules are more generous than the rumour. For the British track, students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects.

That five-subject figure is worth stating because it is commonly got wrong. One ranking competitor states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects. The sourced position is five, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the count. Nothing on this page should be treated as the authority, though: verify current requirements on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority before making a subject decision on them, and treat any page restating them, including this one, as a pointer to the official source.

For completeness on the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. No IB points threshold is published in that source, so no IB equivalency figure appears here. Two further points matter for a tutoring decision: equivalency is a process the Ministry runs, not something a tutor performs or influences, and tutoring is not required for it. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling urgency.

Where we tutor

Oud Metha and the surrounding school catchments

Each neighbourhood in this belt feeds a different mix of boards, which changes which syllabus code is common there. That matters more than distance when you are trying to find somebody who knows the paper.

Oud Metha

A mixed-board pocket: British, Indian and an IB continuum school within minutes. Science tuition requests from here span Cambridge, Pearson and MYP in roughly equal measure, which is exactly why a geographically chosen tutor so often turns out to know the wrong course.

Al Mankhool

Immediately west across Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road, served by Al Fahidi and ADCB stations. Heavily British and Indian curriculum, with Cambridge codes dominating the science requests that come from this postcode.

Karama

Compact, apartment-dense and the shortest school runs in the belt. Families here are the most likely to have been recommended a neighbour's tutor, and the most likely to discover the board mismatch in Year 11 rather than Year 10.

Bur Dubai

The historic core around Al Fahidi and the Creek, with long-established Indian-curriculum provision. Transition questions from CBSE into Cambridge IGCSE science are more common here than anywhere else in Dubai.

Al Garhoud

Across the Creek beside the airport, and the route to Festival City schooling. The bridge is the scheduling variable: a 3.15pm pickup in Festival City reaches Al Garhoud anywhere between 3.45pm and 4.30pm depending on the day.

Al Jaddaf

Minutes from Oud Metha along Oud Metha Road, with an IB continuum school on the doorstep. Students here are more likely to be in MYP Sciences than IGCSE, so the tutoring question is usually about the transition rather than the paper.

Al Qusais

Out along the Green Line towards Sharjah, with dense Indian-curriculum provision and a long commute into Bur Dubai schools. Weekday sessions have to be late here, which a tutor driving between apartments cannot reliably offer.

Al Mamzar

Coastal and quieter, close to the Sharjah border, with two long-established private schools within a few minutes. Cohorts are small enough that a specific science specialism is genuinely scarce in the immediate area.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the syllabus code, or ask the school for it

The exam entry statement names the board and the code for each science. With 0620 or 4CH1 in the first message, a match takes a fraction of the time it takes from the word science. If you cannot find the statement, one email to the school office produces it, and it is the most useful thing you can do before spending anything.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson used as a diagnostic

The tutor sets questions across the whole paper rather than the current topic, watches where the method breaks, and reports what they found. If the match is wrong you say so and nothing is owed. The condition is one trial lesson per student. This is the step that catches a board mismatch before it costs a term.

  3. 03

A written plan naming the paper and the target

After the trial you get the topics, the order, roughly how many sessions and what the block should achieve, stated against the paper rather than the syllabus. A plan that cannot name its objective becomes a standing weekly slot, which is the most expensive way to buy tuition in this market.

  4. 04

A fixed slot on Gulf Standard Time

Lessons run live over video at a time chosen around the Bur Dubai school run, usually between 4.30pm and 7pm on a weekday. No travel is added at either end, so a 5pm session starts at 5pm. Ramadan timings can move to post-Iftar slots on request.

  5. 05

Review against the plan, including the option to stop

At the end of the block you get the mark evidence and a recommendation, which may be to stop. For many IGCSE students the right answer after eight focused weeks is that the gap has closed and the money is better spent on a different subject next term.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by code, not by subject word

Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 are different courses with different papers. We match on the code from the exam entry statement, which removes the commonest and most expensive failure in local tutoring: a good tutor teaching the wrong specification very well.

The pool is everybody free at that hour

Online delivery means your shortlist is not drawn from the people who can reach Oud Metha by 5pm. It is drawn from everybody who can teach your child's paper at 5pm Gulf Standard Time, which is how a specific specialism becomes findable at all.

Dates taken from the boards, not restated loosely

Cambridge and Pearson dates on this page carry their source, and the February and March series is named as India-only because it is. A plan built on a wrong exam window is worse than no plan, and it is a mistake that has been published to UAE parents before.

Prices published with attribution

Every AED band here names the provider that published it and the month it was read. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and one asks the price in its own FAQ and then declines to answer it.

Honest about coverage limits

If nobody is free in your window for your child's exact code, we tell you, and tell you when somebody will be. Filling the slot with a general science tutor and hoping is the quiet failure that costs a family a term, and no competitor page researched discloses a coverage limit at all.

No regulatory claims we cannot support

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson approval and claims none. What this page does is explain what each body governs and link you to its own pages so you can check a school, an inspection band or a tutor permit yourself.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Oud Metha: your questions answered

How do I find out which IGCSE science syllabus my child is taking?+

It is on the exam entry statement the school issues, which lists each subject with its board and code. Cambridge codes are four digits: Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620, Physics 0625, Combined Science 0653, Co-ordinated Sciences 0654. Pearson International GCSE codes begin with a four: 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4SD0 for Double Award. If you have not been sent the statement, one email to the school office produces it. Do this before paying for anything, because the two boards examine practical work differently and a tutor preparing your child for a paper they will not sit is the most expensive mistake available in this market.

Do Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE sciences cover the same material?+

They overlap substantially in content and differ in structure, which is what matters for revision. Cambridge separate sciences are tiered into Core and Extended and carry either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper. Pearson sits in a single tier with two written papers and assesses practical knowledge inside them, with no separate practical component. So a Pearson candidate has to revise apparatus, method and expected observations as content, while a Cambridge candidate prepares for a specific paper about them. Confirm the paper structure and weightings with your child's school, since both boards revise specifications between cycles.

Can an online tutor really help with practical science?+

Yes, because neither board assesses the experiment itself through a tutor. Cambridge examines practical work through a practical test sat at the centre or through an alternative-to-practical written paper; Pearson examines it inside the written papers. In every case the assessed thing is written: a method described, a reading interpreted, a source of error named. Those errors are visible immediately on a shared screen, which is why one-to-one video work suits this component well. The school stays responsible for the laboratory work, and no tutor should offer to replace it.

My child is on Core tier. Does that limit what they can do afterwards?+

It limits the grade available and it creates a real content gap for post-16 sciences, but it does not close the route. Core tier covers a reduced subset of the syllabus and caps the maximum grade below the top of the scale; Extended covers the full content and reaches the top. Schools in Bur Dubai and across the Creek generally expect Extended tier, or the Co-ordinated double award, before timetabling a Diploma science at Higher Level. If Core is the entry, budget four to six weeks of focused work in the summer before Year 12 rather than discovering the gap in October.

Which IGCSE science do UAE students lose the most marks on?+

Across the three, the largest single cause is answer length rather than any one subject. Students treat the mark allocation as a suggestion and write one sentence for three marks. In Biology that is the dominant loss, because the content reads easily and the credit sits in precision. In Chemistry it is calculation chains abandoned halfway, where showing two correct steps earns more than a bare wrong answer. In Physics it is units and rearrangement, consistently. Fixing answer length is technique work rather than content revision, and it moves marks in all three papers at once.

When do UAE students sit IGCSE science exams?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series; Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests run in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November, and the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. The February and March series is offered to India only and does not apply to UAE candidates. Work from the timetable your school issued rather than one found online, and check it on cambridgeinternational.org or qualifications.pearson.com.

Why does Cambridge ask about an administrative zone?+

Because the same exam runs at different local times around the world. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a timetable version per zone. Its own guidance states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. Your child's school in Oud Metha or Bur Dubai knows which zone it sits in. If revision is being planned from a timetable found online, check the zone before trusting any date on it.

How many sessions does one IGCSE science usually need?+

For a Year 11 student with a defined gap, eight to twelve weekly sessions is a realistic block, and the honest answer at the end of it is often that no more are needed. For a student behind in all three sciences, rotating one weekly session across Biology, Chemistry and Physics usually produces more movement than three separate slots, because the method work on units, graphs and answer length transfers between them. Avoid open-ended weekly arrangements with no stated objective; they run for two years and nobody involved has to judge whether they worked.

What does an IGCSE science tutor cost in Oud Metha?+

Dubai market rates, reviewed October 2026, start at the budget online tier where Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, usually delivered by university students. A qualified subject tutor working online is quoted at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing from AED 150 for IGCSE. Specialist support runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home one-to-one is AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 table. Those are other providers' figures. IB Gram sets pricing after a free trial lesson and a look at the mark breakdown.

Is a cheap tutor a false economy for IGCSE science?+

It depends entirely on the job. For a Year 9 or Year 10 student who needs structure, homework discipline and somebody to sit with, the budget online tier at AED 33 to 65 an hour can be perfectly sensible and is what many Oud Metha families should buy. For a Year 11 student eight weeks from a series, a tutor who cannot say whether the alternative-to-practical paper applies to their entry is expensive at any rate, because the weeks are not replaceable. Match the tier to the task rather than to the anxiety.

Do my child's IGCSE sciences count towards UAE equivalency, and how many subjects are needed?+

Five subjects are counted. Students on the British track must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. One ranking competitor states six subjects, which is not what the sourced guidance says. Verify current requirements on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority, because equivalency is the Ministry's process and no tutor performs or influences it.

Which schools near Oud Metha teach IGCSE sciences?+

The British-curriculum provision closest to an Oud Metha address includes St Mary's Catholic High School and Dubai Gem Private School, with Ambassador School in Al Mankhool and Dubai English Speaking School nearby. Across the Creek, Deira International School and Al Ittihad Private School in Al Mamzar also run IGCSE before splitting into post-16 routes. Boards vary between them, and some run Cambridge while others run Pearson, so never assume from the school name. Check the current KHDA inspection report alongside the school's own subject list, both of which are published.

Can one tutor cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics?+

Some can, and the honest test is whether they can name where each paper's mark scheme refuses credit. A tutor fluent in all three at Extended tier exists but is uncommon, and claiming the range is easier than holding it. Where one tutor genuinely covers all three, rotation is efficient and cheaper than three separate slots. Where they do not, it is better to take one specialist for the weakest subject and leave the others to school support than to buy shallow coverage across three papers. Ask for the codes they have taught to examination.

What happens if nobody is available for my child's exact syllabus?+

We tell you, and we tell you when somebody will be. The alternative, putting a general science tutor into the slot and hoping, is the quiet failure that costs a family a term, and no competitor page researched for this project discloses a coverage limit at all. If your window cannot be covered, the realistic options are to move the slot, to start with a defined block on the work any strong science teacher can move such as method vocabulary and answer structure, or to wait. We will say which of the three we think applies to you.

Do you supply past papers or mark schemes?+

No. Cambridge, Pearson and IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are copyright material, and reproducing or distributing them is infringement. A tutor works with material the student legitimately holds through their school, cites the official source and links to it: cambridgeinternational.org for Cambridge qualifications and qualifications.pearson.com for Pearson Edexcel. Your child's school is the proper route to released papers and current specifications, and the school also holds the correct zone timetable, which matters more than any copy circulating online.

Get the code, then get the right tutor

The useful order for an Oud Metha family is short. Ask the school office for the exam entry statement and read the board and code against each science. Send that code with your enquiry. Take the free trial lesson and let the tutor set questions across the whole paper rather than the topic the student is currently on, then read what they report. Choose a block with a named objective and an end date. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, timed around the Bur Dubai school run, with Ramadan slots available after Iftar. If nobody is free for your code in your window, we will tell you that rather than fill it.
