Certified IGCSE Tutor in the UAE: What the Certificate Is Worth

A certified IGCSE tutor in the UAE can mean six different things, and each one carries a different hourly rate. This page prices them: what a teaching qualification, a subject degree, a Cambridge professional award, marking experience and the MoHRE private tuition work permit each add to a quote in AED, and which of them changes what actually happens in the lesson. Teaching arranged through IB Gram is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with a trial lesson before any payment and no card details taken to book it.

  • Every credential named with its issuer, not implied by a badge
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years
  • Market AED rates quoted with the provider that published them and the month read
  • One-to-one lessons over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What you are actually buying when you pay more for a certified IGCSE tutor

Nobody certifies IGCSE tutors. Cambridge International awards qualifications to candidates and accredits exam centres; Pearson does the same for its International GCSE. Neither body issues a licence to a private tutor, and no UAE authority issues a subject teaching certificate to one either. So when an advertisement in this market promises a certified IGCSE tutor in the UAE, it is pointing at something else: a teaching qualification earned abroad, a university degree in the subject, a professional development award, seasonal marking experience, or the one document UAE law genuinely requires, the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Each of those sits at a different point on the AED 45 to AED 650 an hour this market charges, and only some of them change what happens inside a lesson.

That is why this page is organised around money rather than badges. Private tutoring here runs on a permit: Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit, MoHRE grants it free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications made through its smart app, website or e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without that permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, no amount belongs on this page.

The permit is the legal floor rather than a measure of teaching quality. It establishes that a person may lawfully charge for lessons in the UAE. It says nothing about whether they have taught Cambridge IGCSE 0580 at Extended tier, whether they can read a Paper 6 mark scheme aloud and explain why a correct answer scored zero, or whether they know that your daughter's school sets its coursework deadline ten weeks before the board does. Those are the things that move a grade, and none of them appears on a certificate. A family paying AED 250 an hour deserves to know which of them that money buys, which is what the tables below set out tier by tier.

Market rates read in October 2026 spread across five recognisable bands. Budget online tutoring starts low: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors working online sit higher, with Unitors publishing IGCSE rates from AED 150. A tutor who travels to a family costs AED 180 to 500 once travel is inside the price, on Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table. Subject specialists run from AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. At the top of the market BartyED publishes AED 650 an hour. Each of those is that provider's own published figure rather than ours.

Teaching arranged through IB Gram is delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school run, prayer times and the bus. Nobody is sent to a UAE address; home visits are a service we run only in India. That is a decision about supply, not about saving money. A family in Al Barsha choosing from everyone willing to drive to Al Barsha on a Tuesday evening is choosing from a very short list, and the list gets shorter the rarer the subject. A family choosing online one-to-one IGCSE lessons is choosing from every specialist free at that hour, which is how a Computer Science 0478 or Accounting 0452 request gets filled at all.

At a glance

  • Cambridge and Pearson certify candidates and accredit centres; neither licenses a private tutor
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit: free of charge, valid two years, applied for in the MoHRE smart app
  • Bands read October 2026: AED 45-150 budget, 150-300 qualified, 200-450+ specialist, 500-650+ premium
  • A teaching qualification evidences training; a syllabus code on the lesson plan evidences fit
  • Arabic and Islamic Education are the only school subjects where a UAE authority checks the teacher's approval
  • Ask for the issuer, the year and the document, and a decorative badge falls apart in one question
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The word certified means something different at each stage of a British-curriculum school in the UAE, and so does the rate. These are the four stages families ask about, with what a credential is genuinely worth at each one.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Two years of linear courses examined by written papers at the end of Year 11, with a June series and a November series each year and Core or Extended tier set per subject. Syllabus codes are four digits: 0580 Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry, 0610 Biology, 0500 First Language English. The tier decides the grade range available, the papers sat and the content examined, so a tutor who has only ever taught Core will mis-pitch an Extended candidate by a whole band of difficulty.

UK-curriculum schools account for 37% of pupils in Dubai's 227 private schools, which is why Cambridge IGCSE support is the most heavily supplied part of this market and the most variable in price. Centres are allocated to one of six administrative zones and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, so the first thing a competent tutor asks for is the statement of entry rather than the textbook.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The same qualification level under a different board, with its own codes: 4MA1 Mathematics, 4PH1 Physics, 4CH1 Chemistry, 4BI1 Biology, 4EA1 English Language. Exams are available in May/June and November each year. Papers, tiering and the balance between recall and application differ from Cambridge, and some subjects are structured so that units can be sat across more than one series. A tutor who teaches one board's papers with the other board's technique costs a candidate marks that have nothing to do with knowledge.

Plenty of UAE schools enter candidates for both boards across a nine-subject block, which is the single most common reason a family finds their tutor working from the wrong past paper. Ask the school which board each subject is entered for, write it down, and match the tutor to the code. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the live official timetable on its own site is the only version worth planning around.

CHECKPOINTAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary and Checkpoint

The three years before the IGCSE block, with Checkpoint tests available in March, May and October. This is where a certified tutor is worth least in badge terms and most in diagnostic terms: the gaps that surface here, particularly in algebraic manipulation and scientific writing, are the gaps that cap an Extended grade two years later. Hourly rates at this stage sit at the lower end of the market because the content is less specialised, not because the teaching matters less.

Families arriving mid-year from an Indian, American or national-curriculum school usually land in these years, and the subject gap is rarely where parents expect it. A Year 8 arrival from a CBSE school often has stronger arithmetic and weaker extended writing than their UAE classmates. Two or three diagnostic lessons at AED 150 to 200 an hour buy a written picture of that gap, which is a cheaper way to spend money than a year of general support.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International AS and A Level

The year after IGCSE, where the credential question sharpens because content depth genuinely requires a subject degree. A tutor who can carry a candidate through 0580 Extended may not be able to teach International AS Mathematics, and the honest ones say so. This is also where the gap between a teaching qualification and subject depth becomes visible: pedagogy transfers across levels, but nobody teaches further calculus they have not studied.

For UAE families this stage also carries the Ministry of Education equivalency paperwork. The published British-track rule asks for five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not included among the five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. Verify the current wording on moe.gov.ae before you plan around it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Credential value is not spread evenly across subjects. In some, a strong graduate is plenty; in others, the market is short of anyone who has taught the Extended paper at all. The notes below say which is which, with the codes to quote when you ask.

Mathematics

Core and Extended · Cambridge IGCSE 0580 · Pearson 4MA1

The most supplied subject in this market and the one where a certificate tells you least, because almost every tutor offers it. The useful question is tier experience: Extended papers reward algebraic fluency and multi-step reasoning that Core never tests. Ask how many Extended candidates they have taken through a full series.

Additional and Further Pure Mathematics

Extended only · Cambridge 0606 · Pearson 4PM1

A different subject wearing a similar name, and a genuine scarcity point. Calculus, trigonometric identities and matrices appear at a depth most general maths tutors have not taught since university. Here a subject degree earns its premium, and a tutor who hesitates over the syllabus code is the wrong match.

Physics

Core and Extended · Cambridge IGCSE 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Marks leak in two places: unit and prefix handling in calculations, and the written explanation questions where a correct idea scores nothing without the required vocabulary. The alternative-to-practical paper is its own skill, testing apparatus reasoning and data handling rather than recall, and it is routinely under-prepared.

Chemistry

Core and Extended · Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Moles and reacting-mass calculations separate the top grades from the middle, and organic reaction pathways reward memorised structure over improvisation. A tutor with a chemistry degree reads a candidate's working and sees the misconception; a tutor working from an answer key sees only a wrong number.

Biology

Core and Extended · Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

The content is largest and the marking the most precise. Grades turn on command-term discipline: describe, explain and compare are marked against different criteria, and candidates who write everything they know about a topic score less than candidates who answer the question asked.

First Language English

Cambridge 0500 · Pearson 4EA1

A qualification in which marks are awarded against assessment criteria rather than for correct answers, which makes credential checking harder and more important. Ask to see written feedback on a real response, anonymised. A tutor who marks against the published criteria will annotate against them by name.

English as a Second Language

Cambridge 0510 and 0511

Heavily entered across the UAE and often confused with First Language English when a family books support. The two have different papers, different grade descriptors and different teaching. Confirm the code on the statement of entry before a single lesson is paid for, because the codes differ by one digit.

Economics

Cambridge 0455 · Pearson 4EC1

Diagram accuracy carries the marks that candidates assume prose will carry. Axes labelled correctly, shifts drawn in the right direction and the explanation tied to the diagram are worth more than a page of general argument. A tutor who has marked this subject will say so and show you what the mark scheme rewards.

Business Studies

Cambridge 0450 · Pearson 4BS1

Application to the case material is where grades are decided. Candidates who answer in general business language score the lower band; candidates who quote the stimulus and apply a named concept score the upper one. Scarce at Extended tier in the smaller emirates, which is where online matching earns its keep.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Pearson 4CP0

One of the hardest subjects in the UAE to find a local specialist for at any price. Pseudocode conventions, trace tables and the data-representation topics are taught badly by anyone who has only written production code. This is the clearest case for drawing on a national pool rather than a drive radius.

Accounting

Cambridge 0452

Narrow, technical and routinely mis-taught by generalists. Double-entry discipline and the layout conventions the mark scheme expects are learnable in a term with the right tutor and never learnable from a textbook alone. Availability is thin, so expect to book a time that suits the specialist rather than the family.

Arabic as a Foreign Language

Cambridge 0544 · plus school-mandated Arabic streams

Sits alongside the UAE mandatory subjects rather than replacing them, and the two are frequently confused. The IGCSE qualification is examined by the board; the mandatory school stream is set under Ministry rules and taught by staff the school must hold approval for. Be clear which one you are buying help with.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways families buy this, priced differently because the credential required differs. Every format below is taught one-to-one or in a named pair over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

Diagnostic block, then a decision

Six lessons with one aim: a written picture of where the marks are actually going, built from the student's own marked work and a past paper sat under timed conditions. At the end you get the diagnosis in writing and decide whether to continue, change tutor or stop. It is the cheapest honest way to test a credential claim, because teaching quality shows up in a diagnosis long before it shows up in a grade.

  • A timed paper in lesson one, marked against the published criteria
  • Written topic-by-topic breakdown by lesson six
  • A clear recommendation, including stopping if the gap is not a teaching gap

Weekly one-to-one, one subject

The standard arrangement across Years 10 and 11: one fixed hour a week with the same specialist, working a term ahead of the school's scheme of work rather than a week behind it. Homework is set and marked, and a short note after each lesson tells you what was covered and what was weak. Continuity is the point, which is why the slot is fixed rather than rebooked each week.

  • One named tutor, one fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time
  • Marked homework between lessons, not just lesson time
  • A written note after every session naming the topic and the weakness

Two-subject science or maths block

Physics and Chemistry, or Mathematics and Additional Mathematics, taught by one tutor who holds both syllabus codes where that is genuinely possible. It saves a family one scheduling negotiation and lets the tutor use calculation technique from one subject in the other. Where no single specialist covers both at Extended depth we say so and propose two, because a stretched generalist is worse value than two specialists.

  • Two subjects, one tutor, where the codes genuinely overlap
  • Shared calculation and data-handling technique across both
  • Split into two specialists when depth is better served that way

Pre-series intensive

A short, dense block before a June, November or March series, built backwards from the papers and the entry already made. Content coverage stops; paper technique, mark-scheme language and timed practice take over. This is the format where examiner-level experience is worth the premium that market tier charges, because the whole exercise is about how marks are awarded rather than what the syllabus contains.

  • Planned backwards from the dates on the statement of entry
  • Timed papers marked and returned with criteria referenced
  • Component-by-component technique rather than fresh content

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

Certified by whom? Six things that word is doing in a UAE tutoring advertisement

Start by asking who issued the certificate. The six credentials in the table cover almost every use of the word in this market and they are not interchangeable. A PGCE earned in the United Kingdom evidences training in pedagogy and classroom assessment. A BSc in Chemistry evidences subject depth well beyond IGCSE Extended. A Cambridge professional development award evidences a structured course in teaching and assessing a Cambridge syllabus. Marking experience evidences practice in applying a mark scheme. The MoHRE permit evidences lawful permission to charge for lessons in the UAE. Only the last of those is a UAE document, and it is the only one the law has a view about.

The right-hand column matters more than the rest, because every claim here can be checked in a five-minute conversation. Ask for the awarding institution and the year rather than the acronym. Ask which Cambridge award it was and whether it was completed. Ask which component was marked, in which series, and whether the appointment is current, because a seasonal examiner appointment lapses and nobody announces it. Ask to see the MoHRE permit itself: it costs nothing to hold, which means it has no good reason to be missing. A tutor who cannot produce any of this detail has told you something useful.

Read the last row twice. Platform-internal certification means a tutoring company tested its own people against its own standard, which can be rigorous or decorative with no way to tell from the outside. The questions that settle it are what the test was, who marked it and what the pass mark was. Our own screening is described in sentences rather than badges: the board, the tier, the syllabus codes taught and the components the tutor has prepared candidates for. A specific sentence beats a seal, and it is also the only version a parent can check.

The permit UAE law requires, and the things it still does not tell you

Under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, individuals offering private lessons in the UAE need a private tuition work permit from MoHRE. It is granted free of charge for two years. The eligible categories are wide: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time, with applications through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Anyone tutoring for payment without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Abu Dhabi adds a layer that catches families by surprise. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's own code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the permit holder's school. That makes the most frequently offered arrangement in this country, your child's own subject teacher privately after hours, the one to decline. It is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document, so check the current ADEK wording before relying on the detail, but the direction is clear and it is not a grey area worth testing.

A company is a different legal animal from an individual. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. That permit licenses the business and its premises. It is not a statement about any individual tutor's subject knowledge, and a company permit quoted at you as though it were a teaching credential is a category error. IB Gram holds no permit of that kind and makes no claim to one.

03

What this market charges, and the credential sitting behind each number

IGCSE tutor rates in the UAE run from roughly AED 45 to AED 650 an hour, and the spread is not noise. Each band buys a different thing. The figures below are the published rates of the providers named, read in October 2026, together with Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. They are presented as the market, not as our prices: IB Gram quotes per family after a trial lesson, and three of the six best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, which is why a sourced table is worth more here than another paragraph about value.

The pattern worth noticing is that the credential premium and the format premium are separate charges. Moving from a university student to a qualified IGCSE subject teacher roughly doubles the hourly rate. Moving from online delivery to a tutor who travels adds AED 180 to 500 an hour in Bestimate's figures, and that increment buys travel time rather than teaching. Extended tier IGCSE tuition is charged at the same hourly rate as Core by most providers in this market; what changes is how many hours a candidate needs, which is the number families should be comparing.

Monthly packaging muddies comparison, deliberately. Published packages in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Convert every package to an hourly figure before you compare anything, and ask whether marking between lessons is inside the price or outside it.

04

Two IGCSE years, priced by credential rather than by format

Hourly rates mislead because nobody buys one hour. The arithmetic below takes the bands published above and multiplies them out across a realistic plan, so a family can see what a credential decision costs over Years 10 and 11 rather than over sixty minutes. A UAE school year gives roughly 36 teaching weeks, so one weekly hour across both IGCSE years is about 72 hours of teaching. Every total here is arithmetic on the market bands in the previous table, not a quotation from us, and the IGCSE tutor cost per hour inside each row is the published band rather than a figure we set.

What the table shows is that the credential premium is smaller than the duration decision. Two years of weekly lessons with a qualified subject teacher costs more than three times a focused exam-year block with a specialist, and more than five times a diagnostic block followed by targeted work. Families who start in Year 10 because they are worried, rather than because a diagnosis said to, routinely spend the most and gain the least. The money works hardest when a weakness has been named first and the hours are aimed at it.

The sensible order is therefore diagnosis, then dose. Buy six lessons from the best-credentialled tutor you can find, insist on a written diagnosis, and only then decide the length and the tier of what follows. If the diagnosis says the problem is reading speed in Biology extended-response questions, that is twelve focused hours, not two years of general support. If it says Mathematics 0580 algebra never consolidated in Year 9, that is a longer plan and worth paying a qualified teacher for. Both answers are cheaper than guessing.

A visiting tutor hired locally against live one-to-one online, for a UAE family

The honest comparison is not quality against quality. A good tutor sitting in your living room and the same good tutor on a screen teach almost identically, and anyone claiming a large general advantage either way is selling something. The real difference is who you get to choose from, and what happens when the arrangement is tested by traffic, travel, illness or a minority subject. That is what the table compares, and it is also why IB Gram teaches UAE families online rather than sending anyone to an address here.

Choice is the decisive column. A family hiring locally is choosing from tutors who will travel to that community at that hour, which in Dubai is a reasonable list, in Al Ain a short one and in Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain close to empty. For Computer Science 0478, Additional Mathematics 0606 or Accounting 0452 the local list is often empty everywhere. Online one-to-one IGCSE lessons widen the pool to every specialist free in that slot, which is the difference between the right tutor and the available one.

The practical columns matter more than families expect. A visiting arrangement collapses in the two weeks of the year it is needed most, because exam-season traffic, a tutor's own marking commitments and a single illness all land at once. A fixed online slot survives a trip to Al Ain, a family holiday in a different time zone, and a week when your child has a cast on their leg. Recordings of worked solutions, shared annotated papers and a written note after each lesson are also simply easier to produce on a screen than on a dining table.

Seven questions that test a certification claim before any money moves

  • Which board and which syllabus code is my child entered for, and have you taught that exact code?
  • Which qualification are you describing as certification, who issued it and in which year?
  • Do you hold a MoHRE private tuition work permit, and may I see it?
  • How many candidates have you taken through a full series at Extended tier?
  • What will you have produced in writing by lesson six?
  • Is marking between lessons inside the hourly rate or charged separately?
  • What is your position on coursework, and what will you refuse to do with it?

Everything on this page reduces to a short conversation you can have before paying for a lesson. The questions below are ordered so that the cheapest ones to answer come first; a tutor or agency that stalls on the first three is unlikely to improve on the last four. None of them is hostile, and a well-credentialled tutor enjoys answering them, because they are the questions that distinguish them from the budget end of the market they are competing with on the same search page.

Notice what is not on the list. Do not ask whether the tutor is good, whether students improve, or whether they can get a grade 8. The answers carry no information and the last one should not be answered at all: no tutor can promise a grade, and anyone who does is telling you about their sales process rather than their teaching. Ask instead for facts that can be wrong, because only a checkable claim is worth anything. A tutor who says they have taught 4PH1 Paper 1 for six series has said something you can test in ten minutes of conversation about that paper.

Get the answers in writing before the first paid hour. A short email or message thread naming the tutor, the board, the code, the tier, the rate per hour, what happens to a cancelled lesson and when you will next review the arrangement is enough. It is not a contract so much as a shared memory, and it prevents the most common dispute in this market, which is a family and a tutor holding different beliefs about what was agreed in a friendly first conversation.

07

Lesson twelve: the evidence that a credential is reaching your child

A certificate is a prediction. Twelve lessons in, you can replace it with evidence. The checkpoints below are deliberately observable from outside the lesson, because a parent cannot assess subject teaching directly and should not try. What a parent can see is whether the work is being diagnosed, whether marking is happening between lessons, and whether the language the tutor uses matches the language the mark scheme uses. Those three things correlate far better with grades than any badge in the first table.

The most informative checkpoint is the earliest. A qualified tutor spends the first lesson finding out where the marks are going, usually by having the student attempt something under timed conditions and then reading the working rather than the answers. A tutor who opens with a lecture on the first topic of the syllabus has skipped the diagnosis, which is the part that needed the qualification. That is a correctable fault in lesson two and a reason to change tutor by lesson four.

Act on the right-hand column promptly. Families tend to wait for a report or a mock result before changing a tutoring arrangement, which can waste a full term at AED 200 an hour. Twelve lessons is enough evidence, and the money already spent is not an argument for spending more. Where a change is needed we will say so, including when the honest answer is that the problem is not a teaching problem at all and more paid hours will not fix it.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR, LESSON BY LESSON, AND WHAT TO DO IF IT IS ABSENT
By this pointWhat a well-qualified tutor will have doneThe evidence you can actually seeWhat to do if it is missing
Lesson oneDiagnosed rather than taught: timed work attempted, working read, board and code confirmedA named weakness, not a general comment about confidenceAsk for the diagnosis explicitly before lesson two
Lesson twoSet and marked homework aimed at the named weaknessMarked work returned with criteria referenced, not ticksAsk whether marking is inside the rate; if not, reprice the arrangement
Lesson fourUsed the mark scheme's own vocabulary in front of the studentYour child using command terms correctly without promptingAsk to see the mark scheme the tutor is teaching from
Lesson eightCovered a full past paper under timed conditions and marked itA score, a breakdown by question and a revised planRequest a timed paper next session; it is the single best test
Lesson twelveProduced a written picture of progress against the first diagnosisTopics closed, topics still open, hours needed for eachChange tutor rather than extend; twelve lessons is enough evidence

What no certificate authorises: coursework, practicals and the line a tutor does not cross

No qualification, award or permit entitles a tutor to produce work that must be the student's own. This matters commercially in the UAE because the same search results that show tutoring services also show operators selling finished assessed work, in one researched case at AED 3,750 for a completed internal assessment. Buying that is not a shortcut; it is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the candidate rather than the seller. A tutor's job is to teach, to review the student's own work and to give feedback on it.

The distinction is easier to hold than it sounds, and the table states it component by component. Teaching the technique a coursework task requires is legitimate. Explaining why a paragraph does not meet a published criterion is legitimate. Rewriting that paragraph is not. Drafting a plan the student then writes to is legitimate; supplying the sentences is not. A tutor who cannot articulate that line without hedging is a risk to your child's entry, and a tutor who volunteers it before you ask has told you something reassuring about how they work.

Practical science needs its own paragraph, because the alternative-to-practical paper is routinely confused with a lab skill. It tests reasoning about apparatus, method, variables and data rather than manual technique, and it is examinable without a laboratory. Where a school-assessed practical component exists, that assessment belongs to the school and the student and a tutor stays outside it entirely. We also do not reproduce or supply syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes: those belong to Cambridge and Pearson, are available from them, and we link rather than copy.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies: where a UAE authority does check the teacher

There is one part of a UAE school timetable where teacher approval genuinely is a regulated matter. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. For these subjects, schools are required to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic have appropriate KHDA approval to teach them. That is a real, checkable credential rule, and it applies to school staff rather than to private tutors.

The organisational rules are specific enough to be worth knowing before you buy help. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students; non-Arabs are taught Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies in the school's licensed-curriculum language.

Two practical consequences follow. First, instructional time for these subjects is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and it is advised that any mandatory subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes, so the timetable pressure on an IGCSE option block is real and arithmetic rather than a matter of opinion. Second, for the mandatory subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, which means support here stays squarely inside the school's own material rather than importing a parallel course.

The deadlines a certificate cannot move

Credentials do not change dates, and families who hire late often discover that the expensive part of the calendar has already closed. Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year. Entries are made by the centre, not the family, and they close months before the papers. The March 2027 Cambridge series is the clearest published example: the exam period runs 3 February to 4 March 2027, with final entries due 27 November 2026 and forecast grades due 27 February 2027.

The zone rule is the other thing a parent should know before paying anyone for a revision plan. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. That makes the statement of entry, not a published generic timetable, the document any plan is built from. A tutor who has not asked to see it is planning in the abstract, whatever their qualification.

Results timing shapes what a retake decision costs. Pearson's June 2026 International GCSE results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Cambridge's March 2027 results are published on Direct on 13 May with certificates in late June. Because Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and dates can be revised, always work from the live official timetable on the board's own site, and get the school's internal coursework deadlines in the same calendar.

Where we tutor

Where certification is checked, emirate by emirate

The regulator changes across the seven emirates, and with it what a school must verify about a teacher and what a parent can look up. Rates follow supply, which is thickest in Dubai and thinnest in the north.

Dubai

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority oversees the quality of private education in the emirate: 227 private schools, 387,441 pupils and 17 curricula in 2024-25. Deepest tutor supply in the country and the widest published rate spread, from AED 45 an hour to AED 650.

Abu Dhabi

The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, which rules out the most commonly offered arrangement.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK, with a smaller and more spread-out school network. Specialist supply for subjects such as Computer Science 0478 and Accounting 0452 is noticeably thinner than in the capital, and an evening slot taught over live video is usually the only way to get one at all.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Curriculum approval sitting with the emirate regulator means a school's licensed syllabus is a matter of record rather than a marketing line.

Ajman

Private schools here are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate authority. Families often commute towards Sharjah or Dubai for school, which compresses the evening window and makes a fixed online slot easier to hold than a visiting arrangement.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, like Sharjah's authority, approves fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Local tutor supply at Extended tier is limited, and named subject specialists are almost always taught in remotely.

Fujairah

Under Ministry of Education supervision, on the east coast and separated from the main school corridor by a mountain drive. Fujairah returns essentially zero mentions across the competitor pages in this market, which is a fair reflection of how little local specialist supply exists.

Umm Al Quwain

The smallest school network in the country, also supervised by the Ministry of Education. A family here looking for a qualified IGCSE subject teacher in a minority subject is choosing between a long drive and a video call, and the video call is the one that gets a specialist.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai, UK-curriculum IGCSE schools

The densest IGCSE cluster in the country, and the one where parents most often compare notes on tutor rates. Schools here enter candidates for both Cambridge and Pearson across a nine-subject block, so the board must be confirmed subject by subject rather than assumed from the school.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Repton School Dubai

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

A more dispersed network across the islands and the mainland, under ADEK. Because ADEK's ethics rules bar school staff from tutoring their own enrolled students, families here are choosing from outside the school from the start, which makes the credential question the first one rather than the last.

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Ain English Speaking School

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Fewer schools, longer distances and a much shorter list of local subject specialists. Students here sit the same papers on the same days as their Dubai counterparts, which is the whole argument for matching on syllabus code rather than postcode.

  • Sharjah English School
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Ajman Academy
  • RAK Academy
  • Ras Al Khaimah English Speaking School
  • Fujairah Private Academy

Schools are named here as context for the IGCSE school system UAE families work inside; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school or group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the board, the code and the tier

Start with the statement of entry or the school's subject list rather than a description of the problem. Cambridge IGCSE 0620 Extended and Pearson 4CH1 are different jobs, and the code decides which specialists are even candidates. If you cannot find it, the school office can confirm it in a sentence and it is worth the email.

  2. 02

See the credential before the trial lesson

We name the tutor, the qualification held and its issuer, the boards taught and the components they have prepared candidates for. Where a tutor holds a MoHRE private tuition work permit we say so; where they teach in from outside the UAE we say that instead, with who is accountable for the slot. No badge is used in place of those sentences.

  3. 03

Take the trial lesson, then decide

A trial lesson with the proposed specialist, free and with no card details taken to book it. Its job is not to impress anyone but to produce a diagnosis: the topic the marks are leaking from and what would be done about it. If that does not arrive, tell us and we will propose a different tutor rather than a different sales pitch.

  4. 04

Agree the rate, the cadence and the review point in writing

One short message naming the hourly rate, whether marking between lessons is inside it, the weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, the cancellation position and the date of the lesson-six review. Any figure quoted to you states whether VAT is included. This is the step that prevents almost every dispute in this market.

  5. 05

Review at lesson six, in writing

A written progress note against the original diagnosis: topics closed, topics still open and the hours each needs. Continue, change the tutor, or stop. We say plainly when more paid hours are unlikely to help, including when the issue is attendance, sleep or a subject choice rather than teaching, because that is the honest answer more often than this industry admits.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The credential is named, never implied

Each tutor profile states the qualification, who awarded it and when, the boards taught and the syllabus codes worked on. No seals, no unexplained badges, no borrowed regulator logos. If a claim cannot survive the question who issued it and in which year, it does not go on a profile in the first place.

No regulator badge we do not hold

IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and claims none. We explain what each of those bodies does because UAE families need to know, and we keep our own position separate from theirs. The most dangerous phrase available to pages like this one is the one we leave out.

AED figures are sourced or they are absent

Every rate on this page is attributed to the provider that published it, with the month it was read. Where arithmetic is used, the inputs are the published bands and the sum is shown. We publish no satisfaction percentage, no average score and no star rating, because none of those could be backed with a sample, a date and a method.

Your child's work stays your child's work

Coursework support is teaching, criterion-level feedback and review of the student's own draft. Nothing is written, rewritten or edited to completion, and nothing assessed is supplied. The operators in this market selling finished assessed work put the candidate at risk, not themselves, and declining that business is a position rather than a disclaimer.

Online because the specialist pool is larger than a drive radius

Teaching is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. Nobody is sent to a UAE address and home visits are a service we run only in India. For Computer Science 0478, Additional Mathematics 0606 or Accounting 0452 in the northern emirates, that is the difference between the right specialist and whoever happens to be nearby.

Honest about availability

Some subject and tier combinations have thin cover at a given hour, especially minority IGCSE options and early-evening slots during exam season. We say so before taking a booking, and we offer the slot that genuinely exists rather than the one you asked for. A waiting list stated plainly is worth more than a match made in a hurry.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Does Cambridge or Pearson issue a certificate to IGCSE tutors?+

No. Cambridge International awards qualifications to candidates and accredits exam centres, and Pearson does the same for its International GCSE. Neither issues a licence or certificate to a private tutor. Cambridge does offer professional development qualifications that individual teachers can complete, which is a genuine credential, but it is awarded to the teacher for completing a course rather than appointing them as an approved tutor. So a tutor may honestly say they hold a Cambridge professional award; nobody can honestly describe themselves as licensed by the board. Ask which award, which year, and whether it was completed.

What does certification actually add to an IGCSE tutor's hourly rate here?+

On published figures read in October 2026, moving from a student tutor to a qualified subject tutor roughly doubles the rate: EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Unitors publishes IGCSE rates from AED 150. Subject specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and the premium tier reaches AED 650 at BartyED. The jump is real, but it tracks subject depth and board experience more closely than it tracks any particular certificate. A teaching qualification with no experience of your child's syllabus code earns the higher rate without earning the result.

Is the MoHRE private tuition permit a qualification or just permission?+

Permission. The permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and establishes that someone may lawfully charge for private lessons in the UAE. It tests nothing about subject knowledge, teaching skill or board experience. Its eligible categories include school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, which tells you how wide it is. Treat it as the legal floor: a tutor without one is a problem, and a tutor with one has cleared the first step rather than the last. The qualification questions come after it, not instead of it.

How long does the private tutor permit take to get, and what does it cost?+

MoHRE's service page for the permit, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, states a completion time of two working days and lists no fees, with applications through the MoHRE smart app, the website or the e-services system. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. That matters for a parent for one practical reason: because it costs nothing and takes two days, there is no good explanation for a tutor charging UAE families not having one. Anyone offering private lessons without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Can I ask to see a tutor's certificate before paying for a lesson?+

Yes, and you should. Ask for the awarding institution and the year rather than the acronym, because a certificate number and an institution name can be checked while an acronym cannot. For a degree, check the named subject rather than the level. For a marking appointment, ask which component, which series, and whether it is current, since examiner appointments are seasonal. For the MoHRE permit, ask to see the permit. A tutor who treats these questions as an insult has answered them. One who answers in specifics has told you how they work.

Our school enters Pearson papers. Does a Cambridge-trained tutor still fit?+

Often yes, but it has to be checked rather than assumed. The two boards examine the same level of qualification with different papers, different tiering arrangements and a different balance between recall and application. A tutor who knows Cambridge 0580 inside out will know the mathematics for Pearson 4MA1 and may still teach the wrong paper technique. Ask directly how many series they have prepared candidates for on your board's code. The cost of getting this wrong is not knowledge; it is a candidate answering a question in the style the other board rewards.

Nobody near us teaches IGCSE Computer Science 0478. What happens then?+

That is the most common scarcity in this market, along with Additional Mathematics 0606 and Accounting 0452. Locally, in Al Ain or the northern emirates, the honest answer is often that no specialist is available at any price. Because teaching here is one-to-one over live video, the pool is every specialist free in that slot rather than everyone willing to drive to your community on a Tuesday. If nobody covers the subject and tier at the hour you want, we say so and offer the hours that genuinely exist instead of filling the slot with a generalist.

Is a university student with a grade 9 in the subject worth AED 60 an hour?+

Sometimes, for a specific job. A recent strong candidate is genuinely useful for supervised practice, working through exercises and keeping a Year 10 student honest about homework. What they usually cannot do is diagnose why marks are leaking, teach to a mark scheme they have never marked against, or sequence two years of syllabus. At AED 45 to 150 an hour that may still be the right purchase for the right task. It is the wrong purchase twelve weeks before a series, when technique rather than content is deciding the grade.

Does a tutor with marking experience justify the top of the market?+

For a narrow job, in a narrow window. Published premium rates in this market reach AED 650 an hour, and what that buys is familiarity with how a specific component's mark scheme is applied: why a technically correct answer scored nothing, which phrasing earns the mark, how examiners read a long response. That is worth real money in the final weeks before papers. It is poor value in Year 10, when the student needs content sequencing. Marking experience never includes access to live papers or grade boundaries, and any suggestion that it does should be treated with real scepticism.

My son's own subject teacher offered to tutor him privately. Is that allowed?+

In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the private tuition permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's school. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy text, so check the current ADEK wording, but it is not an arrangement worth testing. Beyond the rules, the conflict is obvious: the person teaching, setting and marking your son's work should not also be paid privately by your family.

Do we need a certified tutor for Arabic as an additional language?+

Be clear which Arabic you mean, because two different things share the name. Arabic as a Foreign Language at IGCSE, Cambridge 0544, is a board-examined qualification like any other option subject. The mandatory Arabic stream every Dubai private school must run is set under Ministry rules, and schools are required to ensure teachers of Arabic and Islamic Education hold appropriate KHDA approval. For the mandatory stream, the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry permission is prohibited, so support stays inside the school's own material.

After how many lessons should we expect to see something for the money?+

A named weakness after lesson one, marked homework by lesson two, a full timed paper marked by lesson eight and a written progress note against the first diagnosis by lesson twelve. Those are observable from outside the lesson, which is the point: a parent cannot assess subject teaching directly but can see whether diagnosis and marking are happening. If lesson twelve arrives with no written picture of what has closed and what is still open, change tutor rather than extend. Money already spent is not a reason to spend more.

Can a tutor mark my daughter's coursework before she submits it?+

A tutor may teach the skill the task requires, explain the published criteria, and give feedback on her own draft against them. What they may not do is write, rewrite or edit passages to completion, or supply sentences for her to use. The distinction is whose words reach the examiner. Any operator offering finished assessed work for a fee, and some in this market do, is putting your daughter's entry at risk rather than their own. If a tutor hedges when you ask where their line sits, that is the answer.

Is a tuition centre with a KHDA permit a safer choice than an individual?+

It is a different thing, not automatically a safer one. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, obtained through initial approval and completed within a maximum of six months, with renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. That licenses the business and its premises. It says nothing about the subject knowledge of whoever is actually in the room with your child. Ask the same credential questions you would ask an individual, and ask who specifically will teach the lessons.

Is the rate quoted per hour or per lesson, and does it include VAT?+

Ask both, in writing, before the first paid session, because this market mixes them. Published packaging in the UAE includes AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits, which are not comparable until you convert them to an hourly figure. Ask separately whether marking between lessons is inside the price. Any figure quoted to your family states whether VAT is included; the VAT treatment of tuition fees generally is a Federal Tax Authority matter and not something this page states a view on.

Does anyone from IB Gram come to our address in the UAE?+

No. Teaching for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school run and prayer times. Home visits are a service we run only in India. That is a supply decision rather than a cost-cutting one: a fixed online slot draws on every specialist free at that hour instead of the shorter list willing to travel to your community, and it survives traffic, travel and a week of illness. On published figures, a visiting arrangement in this market also costs AED 180 to 500 an hour, with the commute inside the rate.

Start with the code, not the badge

Send us the board and the syllabus code from your child's statement of entry, the tier, and the hour that actually works in Gulf Standard Time. We will name the tutor, the qualification they hold and who awarded it, the components they have prepared candidates for, and the rate, before anything is paid. The trial lesson that follows is free, needs no card details, and exists to produce a diagnosis rather than a sales pitch. If nobody suitable is free at the hour you need, we will say so. Every AED figure on this page belongs to the provider that published it, read in October 2026, and none of them is a quotation from us.
