IB Physics Tutor in Dubai South

An IB physics tutor in Dubai South is useful in proportion to how specifically they know the papers. Physics distributes its marks across three components that reward three different skills, and most lost marks are units, uncertainties and graph work rather than concepts. IB Gram teaches Dubai South students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and sends no tutor to a UAE address.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai South

Physics marks are lost in units, uncertainties and graphs, not in concepts

Parents arranging physics support in Dubai South usually describe a student who understands the ideas and cannot convert that into marks. That description is accurate far more often than it sounds, and it points at something specific. IB Physics awards a large share of its marks for things that are not conceptual at all: stating a unit correctly, carrying a prefix, reading a gradient off a line of best fit, quoting an uncertainty to a defensible number of significant figures, and labelling a graph axis with both quantity and unit. None of those is hard. All of them are rarely practised.

The second structural fact is that the three papers reward three different skills, and a plan built on topics touches only one of them. Paper 1 is multiple choice and awards nothing for method, so a correct chain of reasoning ending in the wrong power of ten scores zero. Paper 2 is extended response and does award method, which means partial credit is available for a well-structured answer that finishes at the wrong number. Paper 3 at Higher Level examines data analysis and the option topic, and is reliably met last.

The investigation is 20% of the grade. It is the component a student controls with time rather than with performance on a single morning, and the one most likely to be weak for a reason nobody told them: the exploration and analysis criteria reward a defensible uncertainty treatment, and a student who collected clean data and never propagated an error will sit mid-band with a tidy report. The deadline for it is set by the school's IB coordinator rather than by the IB, and it falls earlier than most families expect.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run in India only. Dubai South students are taught live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the marked script, the official markband and the data booklet open on a shared screen. For physics that arrangement matters more than it does for an essay subject, because a graph can be drawn, annotated and corrected on a shared surface and the correction stays legible the following week.

One point on availability, because this is where honesty costs us something and should. Physics at Higher Level is among the thinnest specialisms in any tutoring market, Dubai included. A Dubai South family filtering by proximity is choosing from a very short list indeed, and that list is selected by willingness to drive the southern corridor rather than by what anyone has taught. Online delivery removes the travel cut. It does not create physicists, and where no Higher Level specialist is free we say so and give a date rather than seating a general science tutor in the chair.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 awards no method marks; a wrong prefix costs the whole question
  • Paper 2 awards method, so structure earns partial credit
  • Paper 3 at Higher Level examines data analysis and the option separately
  • The investigation is 20% and its deadline comes from the school coordinator
  • Uncertainty propagation is a marked skill, not a formality
  • Lessons are live one-to-one video; home visits are an India-only service
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics reaches Dubai South students through the Diploma, and they arrive at it from the Middle Years Programme or from IGCSE. Both routes leave characteristic gaps that show up in different components.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme physics

Taken at Higher or Standard Level, with Papers 1 and 2 at both levels, Paper 3 added at Higher Level, and the scientific investigation worth 20% of the grade. Higher Level adds fields, electromagnetic induction and quantum phenomena to the core, and raises the analytical demand of the markbands at the top end. Grades run 1 to 7 with boundaries set after each session.

Dubai South Diploma candidates sit the May session. The dates that govern the physics year are internal rather than external: the school's deadline for the investigation draft, the final submission date, and the mock window. Those come from the IB coordinator and differ by several weeks between the Dubai Investments Park and Dubailand schools, so ask rather than assume.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Sciences

Marked against four criteria from A to D, each 0 to 8, converted to a 1-7 grade. Criterion B is inquiring and designing and criterion D is reflecting on the impacts of science, so a student can hold a strong grade on investigation design and reflection while quantitative physics lags. That gap surfaces immediately in Diploma Paper 1, where arithmetic and prefixes decide the mark.

Students moving from Middle Years Sciences into Diploma Physics in this cluster usually need a short block on quantitative technique rather than on content: prefixes, standard form, rearranging formulae and significant figures. Four to six sessions across the summer before Year 12 closes most of it, and left undone it costs a term of Year 12 while new content is also arriving.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics into the Diploma

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 is the usual entry route. The gap to Diploma Physics is mathematical rather than conceptual: Diploma questions expect algebraic rearrangement, graph interpretation and uncertainty language that IGCSE touches lightly. Students who took Additional Mathematics alongside their physics arrive noticeably better prepared for the quantitative work.

Several British-curriculum schools in the Al Furjan and Jebel Ali arc feed Diploma cohorts elsewhere in Dubai, so a student may change school and system at sixteen. That transition needs the gap written down over the summer, because Diploma Physics assumes mathematical fluency the IGCSE course did not require.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Where physics is taken as one of the Diploma courses within the Career-related Programme, it is examined identically, investigation included. Students on this route sometimes have fewer timetabled contact hours for the same assessment, which makes independent practice between sessions more important rather than less and makes the investigation harder to supervise in school.

The Career-related Programme is uncommon in this part of Dubai, so a family whose child takes physics within it has no local comparison for whether an investigation draft is on track. A specialist who has supervised the component elsewhere is the straightforward remedy, and online delivery is the only route to one from Dubai South.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The components and topics a Dubai South physics student actually needs work on, broken out by where marks go rather than listed as one subject.

Paper 1: multiple choice

HL and SL

No method marks at all, so a single prefix slip or an arithmetic error destroys a question that was fully understood. The skills that raise a Paper 1 score are estimation, unit checking and dimensional sanity rather than deeper conceptual work. It responds well to high-volume timed practice, which is also the least popular form of revision available.

Paper 2: extended response

HL and SL

Method marks are available, which means a structured answer finishing at the wrong number still scores. The recurring losses are failing to state an assumption, omitting a unit from a final answer, and describing a trend without quoting a value from the graph or data given. Structure can be taught explicitly in a handful of sessions.

Paper 3 at Higher Level

HL only

Data analysis questions plus the chosen option topic. Because it examines a different skill set from Papers 1 and 2, revising the core content does not prepare a student for it. Students meet it late and lose marks that were straightforwardly available, which makes it the clearest planning error in Higher Level physics.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Worth 20% of the grade and marked on criteria that reward a methodology addressing all relevant variables and a processing section that is correct and includes uncertainties. A tidy report with clean data and no error propagation sits mid-band. The deadline comes from the school's IB coordinator, not from the IB.

Uncertainties and error propagation

HL and SL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through products and powers, and quoting a result to a defensible number of significant figures. Examined in both papers and in the investigation, and almost never drilled. The single highest-yield topic in the subject for most candidates.

Graph work and gradients

HL and SL

Drawing a line of best fit, reading a gradient with a sensible triangle, linearising a relationship so it can be plotted straight, and labelling axes with quantity and unit. Marks are awarded for each of these independently of the physics, which makes graph technique an efficient place to spend sessions.

Mechanics and energy

HL and SL

Kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum, work and power. The conceptual content is accessible and the marks go on sign conventions, on resolving forces consistently, and on choosing between an energy and a momentum approach. Drawing the free-body diagram before calculating recovers marks across the whole topic.

Waves and oscillations

HL and SL

Travelling and standing waves, superposition, Doppler effect and simple harmonic motion. Phase relationships and the standing-wave boundary conditions produce the most errors. Higher Level deepens the mathematical treatment of simple harmonic motion, where the energy relationships are a reliable source of marks.

Electricity and circuits

HL and SL

Current, potential difference, resistance combinations, internal resistance and the potential divider. The failure is almost always circuit reading rather than calculation: students who redraw a confusing circuit before analysing it outperform those who attempt to reason from the printed diagram as given.

Fields and induction at Higher Level

HL only

Gravitational and electric fields, potential, and electromagnetic induction. The topic rewards treating field and potential as separate quantities with separate units, which students conflate. Induction questions fail on the direction of the induced effect more often than on its magnitude, and that is a rule to drill rather than derive.

Thermal physics

HL and SL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat, the ideal gas relationships and kinetic theory. Marks go on unit consistency, particularly on temperatures that must be in kelvin, and on recognising a phase change within a multi-stage heating problem. Short topic, dependable marks, frequently rushed in revision.

Quantum and nuclear physics

HL and SL, deeper at HL

Photoelectric effect, atomic spectra, radioactive decay and binding energy. The commonest loss is unit confusion between electronvolts and joules, and mass defect calculations that round early. Higher Level adds depth that rewards careful algebra rather than conceptual leaps, which makes it responsive to targeted practice.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways Dubai South families use one-to-one online physics tuition, chosen by which component is weak. All are live video with a matched specialist and none involves travel to a UAE address.

Technique sessions on uncertainty and graphs

Four to six sessions doing nothing but the quantitative skills that are marked independently of the physics: uncertainty propagation, significant figures, linearisation, gradient reading and axis labelling. The fastest available mark gain for a student who understands the concepts and keeps scoring below expectation.

  • Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty drilled to fluency
  • Propagation through products, quotients and powers
  • Graphs drawn and annotated on a shared surface, saved week to week
  • Linearisation practised on real past-paper relationships

Weekly script-led sessions

The default across Year 12 and the autumn of Year 13. Each session opens with last week's set work marked against the official markband, and the comparison between the written answer and the band is the lesson. Slower than explanation and the only version that reliably moves a grade.

  • 60 or 90 minutes in a fixed weekly slot
  • Questions chosen by component rather than by topic alone
  • Marked against the published markband, wording compared line by line
  • A written note after each session naming the next target

Investigation supervision

Support across the months the scientific investigation actually takes, aimed at the criteria. The work is a question with a genuinely measurable independent variable, a method that addresses the relevant variables, and processing that includes uncertainties. Feedback on the student's own writing only; nobody drafts or rewrites any part of it.

  • Research question narrowed until the variable is measurable
  • Uncertainty treatment planned before data collection, not after
  • Criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Feedback on one complete draft the student has written

Paper 3 blocks at Higher Level

Four to six sessions on the Higher Level third paper alone, because its data-analysis and option content is examined separately and revising the core does not prepare a student for it. Placed deliberately in the plan rather than squeezed into the final fortnight with everything else.

  • Whole Paper 3 sections attempted under timed conditions
  • Data-analysis question types worked through systematically
  • The chosen option topic covered on its own terms
  • Partial-credit strategy where a question cannot be completed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai South

01

Three papers, three different skills

  • A revision block should name the paper it is for, not just the topic
  • Paper 1 improvement comes from volume and unit discipline
  • Paper 2 improvement comes from structure and stated assumptions
  • Paper 3 is a separate skill and needs its own sessions

The most useful thing a physics plan can do is stop treating the subject as one thing. Paper 1 and Paper 2 reward almost opposite habits, and Paper 3 at Higher Level rewards a third set. A student revising topics is implicitly preparing for Paper 2 and hoping the rest follows. It does not follow, and the mark distribution punishes the assumption.

Paper 1 is multiple choice with no method credit. The consequence is stark: a candidate who understands a question perfectly, sets it up correctly and mishandles a prefix in the final step scores nothing on it. The skills that raise a Paper 1 mark are therefore estimation, unit checking, dimensional sanity and speed, and the way to build them is a high volume of timed questions with the wrong answers analysed. Most students have never done that deliberately.

Paper 2 is extended response and does award method, which changes the strategy completely. Here a structured answer that states its assumptions and shows its working earns partial credit even when the arithmetic fails. The losses on Paper 2 are therefore structural: no assumption stated, no unit on the final answer, a trend described without a value quoted from the data. Those are writing habits and they can be fixed in a handful of sessions.

Paper 3 at Higher Level examines data analysis and the chosen option. It is the component most reliably met last and most reliably under-practised, and the marks on it are among the most accessible in the subject because the question types repeat. The table sets the three out side by side so a plan can name which paper each block of sessions is for, which is the discipline that stops a revision timetable from being a topic list.

Uncertainties: the highest-yield topic almost nobody drills

  • Uncertainty is examined in Paper 2, Paper 3 and the investigation criteria
  • Propagation rules are finite: add fractional uncertainties, multiply for powers
  • The uncertainty, not the calculator, decides the significant figures
  • Agreement within uncertainty is a question type, not a judgement call
  • Two sessions to cover, four to make fluent, marks in three components

If a Dubai South physics student is scoring below their understanding, uncertainty handling is the first place to look. It is examined in Paper 2, it is examined in Paper 3, and it is explicitly rewarded in the investigation's analysis criterion, which asks for processing that is correct and includes uncertainties. Despite appearing in three places, it is treated in most classrooms as a formality attached to practical work rather than as examinable content.

The skills are finite and learnable. Absolute uncertainty from an instrument's resolution. Fractional and percentage uncertainty. Propagation through a product or quotient by adding fractional uncertainties, and through a power by multiplying. Quoting a final result so that the uncertainty determines the significant figures rather than the calculator display. Deciding whether two results agree within their uncertainties. That list is short enough to cover in two sessions and deep enough to take four to make fluent.

The payoff appears in places a student does not expect. A Paper 2 question asking whether a measured value is consistent with a theoretical one is an uncertainty question wearing a concepts costume. An investigation whose data is clean and whose analysis has no error bars loses marks in the criterion that carries six of them. A Paper 3 data-analysis question asking for the uncertainty in a gradient is routine once practised and impossible when met for the first time under time.

The honest reason this is under-taught is that it is dull to teach and easy to defer. A tutor working from a marked script rather than a syllabus cannot defer it, because the losses show up on the page. That is the practical difference between a session aimed at a component and a session aimed at a topic, and it is why the first physics session here reads a script rather than teaching from one.

03

Graph technique as a source of marks in its own right

  • Axis labels, scale, line of best fit and gradient triangle each earn marks
  • Linearisation decides what goes on each axis before plotting starts
  • Maximum and minimum gradient lines give the uncertainty in a gradient
  • Graph marks are available independently of understanding the experiment
  • Shared-surface drawing keeps a record of recurring habits

Graph questions award marks for things that are independent of the physics, and that is good news for a student whose concepts are sound. An axis labelled with quantity and unit earns credit. A sensible scale earns credit. A line of best fit drawn through the spread rather than between the first and last points earns credit. A gradient read with a large triangle and the values stated earns credit. None of these requires understanding the experiment.

The skill that does require teaching is linearisation. A relationship that is not straight has to be rearranged so that a straight-line plot becomes possible, which means deciding what to put on each axis before any plotting happens. Students who have not practised this will plot the raw quantities, get a curve, and have nothing to extract a gradient from. Recognising the standard forms, so that a square root or a reciprocal suggests itself immediately, is pattern matching built by volume.

Uncertainty reappears here, because a graph with error bars supports a question about the uncertainty in the gradient, usually by drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines. That is a procedure rather than an insight and it is worth drilling until it is automatic. Candidates who meet it for the first time in a Paper 3 data-analysis question lose several marks that were available to anybody who had seen it once.

Online delivery helps specifically here. A graph drawn on a shared digital surface can be corrected live, annotated with the error the student made, and saved. When the same habit reappears four weeks later the earlier graph is still there to compare against, which turns a repeated mistake into evidence rather than an impression. On loose paper passed across a table, that record does not survive the term.

04

The investigation, and what the criteria actually reward

The scientific investigation is 20% of the physics grade and the only part a student can secure months in advance. What makes it go wrong is rarely effort. It is a research question whose independent variable cannot be measured well enough to produce a usable trend, or a method that ignores a variable an examiner will notice, or an analysis that processes data correctly without ever propagating an uncertainty.

The criteria are published and they are specific. The exploration criterion rewards a methodology that addresses all relevant variables, which means the write-up has to show that the student thought about what else could have changed and controlled or accounted for it. The analysis criterion rewards processing that is correct and includes uncertainties, which is why clean data with no error treatment caps the mark. Reading those two descriptors before designing the experiment changes the design.

Sequencing matters as much as content. Question selection comes first and sets the ceiling. Then a pilot run, which students skip and which reliably reveals that the chosen range is too narrow or the instrument too coarse. Then the real data collection, then processing with uncertainties, then a complete draft in time for the one permitted round of substantive feedback, then submission on the school's date. That date comes from the IB coordinator and differs between schools in this cluster by several weeks.

The boundary on help is firm and worth stating plainly, because a page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments. A tutor may teach the physics, discuss and reject an unworkable question, explain each criterion and its mark allocation, and give feedback on a complete draft the student has written. A tutor may not write a section, supply data, rewrite the analysis or edit to completion. A malpractice finding falls on the student's Diploma.

Mark-scheme traps, topic by topic

These are the specific, repeatable losses that appear on Dubai South physics scripts, and naming them is most of the fix. In mechanics the trap is sign convention: a student who does not fix a positive direction before starting will produce a correct magnitude with the wrong sign, and in momentum questions that is the whole answer. Drawing the free-body diagram first is the habit that prevents it.

In electricity the trap is circuit reading rather than circuit calculation. Examiners draw circuits that are deliberately awkward to read, and candidates who analyse the printed diagram as given will combine the wrong resistors. Redrawing the circuit in a standard layout before any calculation takes ninety seconds and converts a hard question into a routine one. In thermal physics the trap is units, specifically temperatures that must be in kelvin, and multi-stage heating problems where a phase change hides between two gradients.

In fields at Higher Level the trap is conflating field strength and potential, which have different units and different relationships to distance. In induction the direction of the induced effect causes more losses than its magnitude, and the direction is a rule to drill rather than a result to derive under time. In quantum and nuclear physics the trap is electronvolts against joules, and mass defect calculations rounded early enough to lose the final answer.

In waves the trap is phase. Standing-wave questions depend on boundary conditions that students know and apply inconsistently, and Doppler questions depend on whether source or observer is moving, which changes the expression. Each of these is diagnosable from a marked script in minutes, which is why the first session reads the script rather than starting a topic. The table collects them so a student can audit their own paper against the list.

What Higher Level adds, and whether to stay on it

Higher Level physics adds content, adds Paper 3, and raises the analytical demand of the markbands at the top. Those are three separate changes and the distinction matters when a family is deciding whether to continue. The extra content is listed in the subject guide and can be covered. The extra paper requires its own practice and is where unprepared Higher Level candidates lose most. The markband shift is subtler and shows up as a mid-band ceiling on otherwise competent answers.

The mathematical demand is the practical filter. Higher Level physics expects comfortable algebraic rearrangement, work with logarithms and exponentials in decay and attenuation contexts, and the confidence to manipulate an expression before substituting numbers. A student taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation alongside Higher Level physics is not disqualified, but will find the algebra heavier going than a classmate on Analysis and Approaches. That interaction is worth raising in Year 11 when subjects are chosen together.

The decision to drop to Standard Level should be checked against university requirements first, because some engineering and physical-science programmes specify Higher Level physics by name and will not substitute. The honest diagnostic is whether the student is a band below target in one component or across all of them. One weak component is a technique problem worth fixing. Weakness across every component, in physics and in two other Higher Level subjects at once, is a workload problem, and facing it in Year 12 leaves far more options than facing it in Year 13.

For a Dubai South family there is a supply dimension too. Physics Higher Level specialists are thin everywhere and thinner in a newer district, which means a student who stays on the Higher Level course needs support arranged earlier rather than later. Where no specialist is free we say so and give a date, because a general science tutor opposite a Higher Level physics candidate teaches nothing the textbook would not have supplied.

What a physics specialist costs in Dubai, and why generalists are cheaper

The price ladder in this market tracks specialism and delivery model rather than any measurable quality claim, and physics shows that more clearly than most subjects. Budget online platforms advertise from AED 33-52 an hour on Tutopiya and AED 45-65 on EdFlik, usually delivered by university students or non-specialists. At that band a tutor can supervise homework competently and cannot diagnose why a Paper 2 answer lost its uncertainty marks.

Qualified subject tutors online sit higher. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200-450 or more, and premium named tutors reach AED 650 on BartyED. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180-350 on the same table, with independent home tutors quoted up to AED 500 once travel is in the hour.

Where the spend goes wrong in physics specifically is buying cheap hours for a specialist problem. A student losing marks to uncertainty propagation and graph technique needs somebody who knows those are marked separately from the physics. A generalist will teach the concepts again, which the student already has, and the script will come back the same. That is the most expensive hour available in this market, because it costs money and a term.

Bestimate's monthly estimates give the planning figures: AED 240-600 for budget provision at one hour a week, AED 600-1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Published packages include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Every figure belongs to the provider named; these are market bands rather than IB Gram prices, and our own conversation begins with a free trial lesson and a written diagnosis.

Specialist availability from Dubai South, stated honestly

No tutoring page in this market discloses a coverage limit, which is strange, because availability is the thing a parent most needs to plan around. Physics at Standard Level is reasonably well covered and a match usually takes a few days. Physics at Higher Level is thinner, and a request in a busy week can take longer. The option topic for Paper 3 narrows it further, because not every physics teacher has taught every option.

Proximity makes this considerably worse. Start with everyone who can teach Higher Level physics competently. Remove everyone unwilling to drive to Dubai South for a single evening session. Remove everyone whose free slot does not match your child's. For a Standard Level subject the surviving pool is workable. For Higher Level physics with a specific option, the proximity filter removes very nearly everybody, and a near-me search in this district returns a list selected almost entirely by willingness to travel.

Online delivery removes one cut, which is the expensive one. It does not manufacture specialists, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Where no Higher Level physics specialist is free in the week you ask, we say so and give a date. The alternative, seating a general science tutor opposite a Higher Level candidate, costs the family money and the student confidence while teaching nothing the textbook would not have supplied, and it is the quiet default across much of this market.

Where a wait is genuinely unworkable, there is a middle route worth naming. A shorter block with a different specialist on the single most urgent component — uncertainty technique, or graph work, or the investigation's analysis section — is useful in its own right and does not require the option-topic match. That is a smaller promise than a full term of Higher Level teaching and it is an honest one, which is the distinction this section exists to draw.

Emaar South

Golf-course villas and townhouses with a younger age profile, so Middle Years science demand runs ahead of Diploma physics here. Bookings cluster between 16:45 and 18:00 and investigation work moves to weekends.

Al Furjan

North on the Sheikh Zayed side with its own metro station and British-curriculum schools. Students here commonly sit IGCSE Physics before joining a Diploma cohort elsewhere, which makes summer transition blocks a recurring request.

Dubai Investments Park

The school cluster for this corner of the emirate, with IB continuum provision alongside British and SABIS schools. The shortest school run in the group and the widest choice of early slots for a two-session week.

Jebel Ali

The established zone west of the cluster with long-standing British and Indian-curriculum schools. Students arriving into Diploma Physics from here often have Additional Mathematics behind them, which shows in the quantitative work.

Discovery Gardens

Apartment density with a cost-aware parent population. Physics sessions cluster after 18:00 because working parents prefer to be home while a lesson runs, which caps weekly frequency.

Low-rise housing inside Dubai Investments Park, minutes from the schools, and the one community in this group where a 16:00 physics session works reliably in term time.

Dubai Production City

North-east of the cluster with school runs to Motor City and Sports City. The longer drive pushes sessions past 17:30, so Paper 3 blocks here usually sit on weekend mornings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the level, the component and the option

Higher or Standard, which paper is weak, and which Paper 3 option the school teaches at Higher Level. The option matters for matching because not every physics teacher has taught every one. A request that says only physics produces a diagnostic session that then has to be re-aimed.

  2. 02

Send a marked script, ideally Paper 2

A Paper 2 script shows whether losses are conceptual, structural, unit-related or uncertainty-related, and those four look identical from a grade. Where the paper was not finished, that is a pacing diagnosis in itself. Without a script, the first session produces one from a timed section.

  3. 03

Get the investigation deadline from the coordinator

Ask the school's IB coordinator for the draft and final submission dates for the scientific investigation. They are school dates, not IB ones, and they differ by weeks between schools in this cluster. A physics plan built on an assumed deadline discovers the real one too late to act on.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson with the matched specialist

One full session at no charge and no card, taught by the person who would take the term. It returns a written diagnosis naming the component faults found, in priority order, and a plan for the first four sessions. If the match is wrong we rematch rather than asking you to persist with it.

  5. 05

Put uncertainty and graph work first

For most students who understand the concepts and keep underscoring, these two are the fastest available gain and they pay in three components at once. Four to six sessions covers them properly. Leaving them until after topic revision means arriving at the papers with the same faults intact.

  6. 06

Introduce Paper 3 before the end of Year 12 at Higher Level

Higher Level candidates should attempt whole Paper 3 sections well before the final weeks, because its data-analysis and option content is examined separately from the core. Students who meet it late lose marks that were straightforwardly available to anyone who had practised the question types once.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Sessions aimed at a paper, not at a topic

Paper 1 rewards unit discipline and speed, Paper 2 rewards structure and stated assumptions, Paper 3 rewards data-analysis familiarity. A plan that names the paper each block is for behaves differently from a topic list, and in physics that distinction decides whether the hours convert into marks.

Uncertainty treated as examinable content

Error propagation is marked in Paper 2, in Paper 3 and explicitly in the investigation's analysis criterion, and it is taught in most classrooms as a formality attached to practicals. Four sessions makes it fluent and it pays in three components, which is the best return available in the subject.

Graphs drawn and kept on a shared surface

A graph corrected live and saved means the same habit reappearing four weeks later is visible rather than remembered. Axis labels, scale, line of best fit and gradient triangles each earn marks independently of the physics, and a persistent record is what makes a recurring fault fixable.

The investigation gets sequenced, including the pilot

Question first, then a pilot run students always skip, then collection, then processing with uncertainties, then one draft in time for the single permitted round of feedback. The deadline comes from the IB coordinator rather than an assumption, because in this cluster it differs by weeks between schools.

Availability disclosed, including when it is thin

Physics Higher Level with a named Paper 3 option is one of the thinnest specialisms anywhere. Where nobody is free we say so and give a date, or offer a shorter block on the most urgent component. No competitor page in this market publishes a coverage limit; this one does.

No regulator claims and no UAE centre

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE or IB approval, accreditation or partnership and operates no office or centre in the UAE. Regulators are explained here because the explanation helps a parent decide, not because the names add standing we do not hold.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai South: your questions answered

Why does my child understand physics but score badly in Dubai South?+

Most often because the marks they are losing are not conceptual. IB Physics awards marks for stating a unit, carrying a prefix, labelling a graph axis with quantity and unit, reading a gradient with a sensible triangle and quoting an uncertainty to a defensible number of significant figures. None of that requires deeper understanding and none of it is usually drilled. A marked Paper 2 script shows the pattern within minutes, and four to six sessions on those mechanical skills typically moves a score more than another term of concept teaching would.

What is the difference between IB Physics Paper 1 and Paper 2?+

Paper 1 is multiple choice and awards no method marks, so a perfectly set-up question with a mishandled prefix in the final step scores nothing. Paper 2 is extended response and does award method, which means a structured answer stating its assumptions earns partial credit even when the arithmetic fails. The practical consequence is that they need different preparation: Paper 1 responds to high-volume timed practice with unit checking, while Paper 2 responds to answer structure. Treating them as the same revision task is common and costly.

How much of the IB Physics grade is the investigation?+

Twenty per cent, at both Higher and Standard Level. It is marked on criteria that reward a methodology addressing all relevant variables and processing that is correct and includes uncertainties, which is why a tidy report with clean data and no error treatment sits mid-band. The deadline comes from the school's IB coordinator rather than from the IB, and in this part of Dubai it differs by several weeks between schools. Establishing that date in Year 12 is the single most useful administrative action a parent can take.

What does uncertainty propagation actually involve?+

A short, finite set of procedures. Absolute uncertainty from an instrument's resolution. Fractional and percentage uncertainty from that. Propagation through a product or quotient by adding fractional uncertainties, and through a power by multiplying by the index. Quoting a final result so that the uncertainty, rather than the calculator display, determines the significant figures. And deciding whether two values agree within their uncertainties, which is a question type rather than a judgement. Two sessions covers it; four makes it fluent, and it pays marks in Paper 2, Paper 3 and the investigation.

Why is Paper 3 a problem for Higher Level physics students?+

Because it examines data analysis and a chosen option topic rather than the core content of Papers 1 and 2, so revising the core does not prepare a student for it. A plan built around topics never touches it, and students routinely meet whole Paper 3 questions for the first time in the final fortnight. The marks on it are among the most accessible in the subject because the data-analysis question types repeat across sessions, which makes arriving unpractised a genuine waste rather than bad luck.

What is linearisation and why do students lose marks on it?+

Linearisation is rearranging a relationship so that a straight-line graph becomes possible, which means deciding what to plot on each axis before any plotting starts. A student who has not practised it will plot the raw quantities, obtain a curve, and have no gradient to extract. Recognising the standard forms so that a square root or a reciprocal suggests itself is pattern matching built by volume rather than by explanation. It appears in Paper 2, in Paper 3 data analysis and in most investigations, so it earns its practice time.

Does the maths route affect Higher Level physics?+

It affects how heavy the algebra feels rather than whether the course is possible. Higher Level physics expects comfortable rearrangement, work with logarithms and exponentials in decay and attenuation contexts, and the habit of manipulating an expression before substituting numbers. A student on Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches meets those skills in their maths lessons; a student on Applications and Interpretation generally does not and has to build them inside physics instead. That interaction is worth raising in Year 11 when the two subjects are chosen together.

Where is the line on investigation help for a Dubai South physics student?+

The line sits at production. Within the IB's limits, most of the useful work is still available. A tutor may teach the physics, discuss a proposed question and reject one whose independent variable cannot be measured well enough, insist on a pilot run, explain each criterion with its mark allocation, and give feedback on a complete draft the student has written. A tutor may not write a section, supply data, rewrite the analysis or edit to completion. A malpractice finding falls on the student's Diploma, so any provider offering a finished investigation should be refused outright.

Should my child drop Higher Level physics to Standard Level?+

Check the university requirement first, because some engineering and physical-science programmes specify Higher Level physics by name and will not substitute. Beyond that, the useful diagnostic is whether the student is a band below target in one component or across all of them. One weak component is a technique problem worth fixing. Weakness across every component, in physics and two other Higher Level subjects simultaneously, is a workload problem. Facing that in Year 12 leaves far more options than facing it in the spring of Year 13.

Are there IB Physics Higher Level tutors available near Dubai South?+

Very few, honestly. Higher Level physics is among the thinnest specialisms in any tutoring market, and Dubai South is a newer district with a smaller resident supply of experienced subject teachers than the older Jumeirah or Al Barsha belt. A proximity-filtered search then removes anyone unwilling to drive the southern corridor at 17:00. Online delivery removes that travel cut, which is the expensive one, but it does not create specialists. Where no Higher Level physicist is free we give a date rather than seating a general science tutor.

What are the commonest mark-scheme traps in IB Physics?+

Sign conventions in mechanics, where a correct magnitude with the wrong sign loses a momentum question. Circuit reading, where analysing an awkward printed diagram as given produces the wrong resistor combination. Celsius where kelvin is required in thermal problems. Conflating field strength with potential at Higher Level. The direction of an induced effect, which causes more losses than its magnitude. Electronvolts against joules in quantum and nuclear work. And phase or boundary conditions in standing-wave and Doppler questions. All seven are visible on a marked script.

Does IB Gram send a physics tutor to a Dubai South address?+

No. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only and no tutor is sent to any UAE address. Dubai South students are taught live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the marked script, the markband and the data booklet open on a shared screen and graphs drawn on a shared surface that is saved week to week. For physics that record is a genuine advantage, because a recurring graph or unit habit becomes visible rather than remembered differently by two people.

How many physics sessions a week does a Dubai South Diploma student need?+

One a week through Year 12, rising to two in the spring of Year 13 and in the weeks before the May papers, with a separate block for Paper 3 at Higher Level. The limiting factor is how much independent practice a student completes between sessions rather than how much teaching they can absorb. A more effective shape than a flat weekly commitment is a lighter Year 12 with a concentrated block around the investigation, then a heavier spring when timed papers and Paper 3 both need attention.

Is the data booklet useful if a student has never read it?+

It is permitted in the examination and it is a liability for anyone meeting it cold. Candidates lose time searching for a relationship that is printed on a page they have never opened, and occasionally derive something that was supplied. Twenty minutes spent reading the booklet and noting which relationships are provided and which must be recalled is among the cheapest revision actions available in physics, and it is as under-used as the formula lists at IGCSE. Do it weeks before the paper, not in it.

What should a Middle Years science student do before Diploma Physics?+

A short quantitative block rather than content revision. Middle Years Sciences is marked against four criteria, with criterion B rewarding inquiring and designing and criterion D rewarding reflection on the impacts of science, so a student can hold a strong grade while arithmetic and prefix handling lag. Diploma Paper 1 exposes that immediately. Four to six sessions across the summer before Year 12 on prefixes, standard form, rearranging formulae and significant figures closes most of the gap before new content starts arriving.

What does a physics specialist cost compared with a general tutor in Dubai?+

Published figures split by band. Budget online platforms advertise from AED 33-52 on Tutopiya and AED 45-65 on EdFlik, which buys homework supervision rather than component diagnosis. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150-300 with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 or more, TutorChase quotes AED 270, and BartyED reaches AED 650. In physics the cheap hour is often the expensive one, because a generalist reteaches concepts the student already has. These are market bands, not IB Gram prices.

Send a Paper 2 script and the investigation deadline

An IB physics tutor in Dubai South earns their place by knowing where the marks go: units, prefixes, uncertainty propagation, graph technique and answer structure, before any concept is revisited. Tell us the level, the weak component and which Paper 3 option the school teaches, send a recent marked script, and ask your IB coordinator for the investigation dates. The free trial lesson returns a written diagnosis in priority order. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are an India-only service and are not offered in the UAE.
