IB & IGCSE in Dubai South

The chemistry year has three pressure points and they do not move

Chemistry in the Diploma has a shape, and most families meet it one crisis at a time rather than as a whole. The first pressure point is the investigation, worth 20% of the grade, whose school deadline usually falls in Year 12 or early Year 13 and which requires laboratory access the school controls. The second is organic chemistry, which in many schemes of work arrives in the second year and lands on a cohort already managing Extended Essay and university applications. The third is the May papers, which are fixed.

A plan that treats the subject as one long run-up to May will arrive after the first two have already happened. That is why this page is organised as a calendar rather than as a topic list. The content is the same content everywhere; what differs between a useful tutoring plan and an expensive one is whether the hours land where the deadlines are. For Dubai South families specifically, that means asking the school's IB coordinator two questions early: when is the investigation due, and when does the scheme of work reach organic.

The marks in chemistry are distributed in a way that rewards this planning. The investigation is 20% and can be secured months in advance. Paper 2 carries around 36% at Higher Level and rewards multi-step calculation discipline. Paper 1 awards nothing for method, so a correct mechanism with one arrow starting in the wrong place scores nothing. At Higher Level, Paper 3 covers data analysis and the option topic separately and is met last by nearly everybody.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run in India only. Dubai South students are taught live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the marked script, the markband and the data booklet open on a shared screen and mechanisms drawn on a shared surface that is saved. For chemistry that persistence is useful in a specific way: a curly arrow drawn from the wrong lone pair in week three and again in week nine is visible on the record rather than recalled as carelessness.

One factual note. KHDA oversees the quality of private education in Dubai, inspects schools annually and publishes the ratings. It does not accredit private tutors, and IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, approval or partnership and operates no UAE centre. Individual tutors in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Ask to see it, then ask whether they have taught Chemistry at the level your child is sitting. The permit licenses somebody to teach privately in the UAE; it says nothing about whether they have marked a Higher Level mechanism question, which is the question that decides whether the hours will be useful.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Dubai South students reach Diploma Chemistry from the Middle Years Programme or from IGCSE, and each route leaves gaps that surface at a different point in the two years.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme chemistry

Taken at Higher or Standard Level, with Papers 1 and 2 at both levels, Paper 3 added at Higher Level, and the scientific investigation worth 20%. Higher Level adds entropy and spontaneity, equilibrium calculations, transition metal chemistry and deeper organic content. The data booklet and periodic table are supplied in the examination, and most candidates have never located anything in them beforehand.

Dubai South Diploma candidates sit the May session. The dates that actually govern the chemistry year are internal: the investigation draft and submission deadlines, the laboratory access window, and the mock. Those come from the school and differ by several weeks between the Dubai Investments Park and Dubailand schools, which is why the first conversation is about dates rather than topics.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Sciences

Marked against four criteria from A to D on a 0-8 scale, converted to a 1-7 grade. Criterion B rewards inquiring and designing and criterion D rewards reflecting on the impacts of science, so a student can hold a strong grade with good investigation design while quantitative chemistry lags. That gap shows up in Diploma mole calculations, where arithmetic and unit discipline decide the mark.

Students moving from Middle Years Sciences into Diploma Chemistry in this cluster usually need a short quantitative block rather than content revision: moles, concentrations, limiting reagents and significant figures. Four to six sessions across the summer before Year 12 closes most of it, and skipping it costs a term of Year 12 while new content arrives on top.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry into the Diploma

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 is the usual entry route. The gap to Diploma Chemistry is depth rather than breadth: IGCSE organic chemistry is nomenclature and reaction type, while Diploma organic requires mechanisms with electron movement shown correctly. Energetics and equilibrium also deepen substantially, from qualitative description to calculation.

Several British-curriculum schools in the Al Furjan and Jebel Ali arc feed Diploma cohorts elsewhere in Dubai, so a student may change school and system at sixteen. That transition needs the gap written down over the summer, because Diploma Chemistry assumes a quantitative confidence the IGCSE course did not demand.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Where chemistry is taken as one of the Diploma courses within the Career-related Programme, it is examined identically, investigation included. Students on this route sometimes have fewer timetabled contact hours for the same assessment, which makes laboratory access harder to arrange and independent practice between sessions more important rather than less.

The Career-related Programme is uncommon in this part of Dubai, so a family whose child takes chemistry within it has no local comparison for whether an investigation is on track. A specialist who has supervised the component elsewhere is the practical remedy, and online delivery is the only route to one from Dubai South.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The components and topics a Dubai South chemistry student needs work on, grouped by when in the two years they usually become urgent.

Stoichiometry and the mole

HL and SL, Year 12

Moles, concentration, limiting reagents, percentage yield and gas volumes. The foundation everything quantitative rests on, and the place a weak Year 12 start does lasting damage. Marks are lost to unit slips between grams and moles and to early rounding that propagates through a multi-step chain to a rejected final answer.

Atomic structure and bonding

HL and SL, Year 12

Electron configuration, ionisation energy trends, hybridisation and intermolecular forces. The questions ask for explanation rather than recall: why a trend exists rather than what it is. Higher Level adds depth on orbital shapes and on the relationship between structure and physical property.

Energetics and thermochemistry

HL and SL, Year 12 into 13

Enthalpy changes, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies and calorimetry. Higher Level adds entropy and Gibbs free energy, which arrive late and are reliably rushed. Sign conventions cause more losses here than any calculation does, and a stated sign with a stated reason earns marks a bare number does not.

Equilibrium

HL and SL, Year 13

Le Chatelier qualitatively at both levels, with equilibrium constant calculations added at Higher Level. The Higher Level calculations arrive in the second year and are among the most improvable content in the course, because they are procedural: set up the table, substitute, solve, check the assumption.

Acids, bases and pH

HL and SL, Year 13

Strong and weak acid behaviour, pH and the logarithmic scale, buffers and titration curves at Higher Level. Marks go on treating a weak acid as if it were strong, and on titration curve questions where the half-equivalence point and its relationship to the dissociation constant are not recognised.

Redox and electrochemistry

HL and SL, Year 13

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrochemical cells and electrolysis, with electrode potentials added at Higher Level. Half-equations attempted without balancing charge score nothing, which is a mechanical check students skip under time pressure. Cell diagrams reward a learned convention rather than reasoning.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

HL and SL, usually Year 13

Nomenclature, functional groups, reaction types and, at Higher Level, mechanisms with curly arrows showing electron movement. An arrow starting from the wrong lone pair or bond earns nothing, and examiners do not award a half-drawn mechanism. The single largest source of lost Higher Level marks in the subject.

Spectroscopy and structure determination

HL and SL, Year 13

Mass spectrometry, infrared and, at Higher Level, nuclear magnetic resonance. Entirely dependent on the data booklet, which supplies the characteristic absorptions and chemical shifts. A student who has never opened the relevant pages will lose marks that require only looking something up correctly.

Transition metals at Higher Level

HL only, Year 13

Complex ions, ligands, colour and catalytic behaviour. Arrives late, is examined reliably, and responds well to a short focused block because the content is bounded. Marks go on naming the ligand arrangement and on explaining colour in terms of d-orbital splitting rather than describing it.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Worth 20% of the grade, marked on criteria rewarding a methodology addressing all relevant variables and processing that is correct and includes uncertainties. In chemistry it is additionally constrained by what the school laboratory can safely supply, which makes question selection a practical negotiation rather than a free choice.

Paper 3 at Higher Level

HL only

Data analysis questions plus the chosen option topic, examined separately from the core. Met last by almost every candidate and under-practised accordingly. The data-analysis question types repeat across sessions, which makes arriving unpractised a straightforward waste of accessible marks.

Calculation chains and significant figures

HL and SL

Not a syllabus topic but a marked skill. A multi-step calculation with a value rounded early produces a final answer the mark scheme will reject even when every step was right. Carrying full precision through and rounding only at the end is a two-session habit that recovers marks across every paper.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four formats, chosen by where in the two-year chemistry calendar the student sits. All are live one-to-one video with a matched specialist and none involves travel to a UAE address.

Year 12 quantitative foundation work

One session a week in the first year, aimed at stoichiometry, unit discipline and calculation chains rather than at whatever the class covered that week. Chemistry punishes a shaky quantitative start for two years, and the first year is the only window in which it can be repaired slowly.

  • Moles, concentration and limiting reagents drilled to fluency
  • Full precision carried through, rounding only at the final answer
  • Set questions marked at the start of the following session
  • A written note naming the next technique target

Investigation sequencing and supervision

Support across the months the investigation takes, starting from what the school laboratory can safely supply. The work is a question with a measurable variable, a method addressing the relevant variables, and processing with uncertainties. Feedback on the student's own writing only; nobody drafts or rewrites any part of it.

  • Question negotiated against available reagents and equipment
  • A pilot run insisted on before real data collection
  • Criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Feedback on one complete draft the student has written

Organic mechanism blocks

Four to six sessions on mechanisms alone, because an arrow starting in the wrong place earns nothing and examiners do not award a partial mechanism. Drawn on a shared surface, corrected live and saved, so a recurring arrow habit is visible across weeks rather than recalled as carelessness.

  • Each mechanism type drawn repeatedly until automatic
  • Arrow origin stated aloud before it is drawn
  • Past-paper mechanism questions marked against the official scheme
  • A one-page reference sheet the student builds themselves

The eight-week block before May

Two sessions a week built entirely on timed questions, after a mock has produced a diagnosis. No new content except where a topic arrived too late to have been taught properly. Dubai South families run these across the spring break and the weeks after it.

  • Week one reads the mock script and nothing else
  • Highest-cost topic first, not the easiest
  • A timed section at the end of each fortnight
  • Final fortnight is whole papers and pacing only

The two-year chemistry calendar and what each term holds

  • Ask the department when organic chemistry lands in the scheme of work
  • Year 12 hours buy more per hour than Year 13 hours do
  • The investigation is designed with the chemistry taught so far, not all of it
  • Half the syllabus is only months old by the spring of Year 13

Chemistry is taught in an order, and the order has consequences for when tutoring is worth buying. Year 12 generally carries stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding and the beginnings of energetics. Year 13 generally carries equilibrium, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry and, at Higher Level, transition metals and entropy. That means the content most likely to be weak in March is content the student only met in January.

The planning consequence is counter-intuitive. The best time to buy chemistry support is Year 12, when the quantitative foundation is being laid and a weakness can be repaired slowly while the class is still introducing topics. The most common time to buy it is the spring of Year 13, when half the syllabus is three months old and the investigation has already been submitted. Both are useful; they are not equally useful per hour.

The investigation sits across this awkwardly. Its deadline is set by the school and typically falls while the student is still mid-course, which means the experiment has to be designed using the chemistry available so far rather than the chemistry they will know in May. That constraint is one of the reasons chemistry investigations go wrong: students pick a question whose analysis needs a topic they have not yet been taught.

The table lays the year out against what tutoring should do in each period. Place it against your own school's scheme of work rather than reading it as universal, because schools in this cluster reach organic chemistry at noticeably different points. Asking the department when organic lands, and when the laboratory is available for investigation work, converts this table from general advice into a plan.

The investigation, counted backwards and constrained by the laboratory

A chemistry investigation is not a free choice of question. It is a question that has to be answerable with reagents and equipment the school can safely supply, within a laboratory window the department controls, using analysis the student has already been taught. Those three constraints are the reason chemistry investigations go wrong more often than physics ones, and all three are known in advance.

Counted backwards from the school's submission date, the sequence runs: question negotiated against what the laboratory can supply, a pilot run to check that concentrations and timings produce a measurable change, booked laboratory time for the real data collection, processing with uncertainties, a complete draft in time for the one permitted round of substantive feedback, and submission. Students routinely skip the pilot and discover during real collection that the reaction is too fast or the change too small to measure.

The criteria reward specific things and they are published. The exploration criterion rewards a methodology addressing all relevant variables, which in chemistry usually means temperature control, concentration accuracy and the limits of the measuring equipment. The analysis criterion rewards processing that is correct and includes uncertainties, so a set of clean titration results with no error treatment caps the mark however neat the write-up is.

The boundary on help is firm. A tutor may teach the chemistry, discuss a proposed question and reject one the laboratory cannot support, insist on a pilot, explain each criterion with its mark allocation, and give feedback on a complete draft the student has written. A tutor may not write a section, supply data, rewrite the analysis or edit to completion. One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments; a malpractice finding falls on the student's Diploma, so that offer should be refused on sight.

Organic chemistry, and why it arrives at the worst possible time

  • Organic usually arrives in Year 13, alongside the Extended Essay and applications
  • An arrow from the wrong origin earns nothing; partial mechanisms are not credited
  • Memorised diagrams fail on unfamiliar substrates
  • State the origin of every arrow aloud before drawing it
  • A summer preview of nomenclature makes the winter term manageable

In most schemes of work organic chemistry lands in Year 13, frequently in the winter term. That places it on a cohort simultaneously finishing an Extended Essay, completing university applications and sitting mocks. It is also the topic with the least forgiving mark scheme in the subject, because a mechanism is either drawn correctly or it is not: an arrow starting from the wrong lone pair or the wrong bond earns nothing, and examiners do not award a half-drawn mechanism.

The failure mode is specific and it is not laziness. Students learn mechanisms as pictures to reproduce rather than as electron movements with a reason, which works until a question presents an unfamiliar substrate. At that point a student who memorised six diagrams has nothing to fall back on, while a student who can say where the electrons start and why will construct the right arrows for a reaction they have never seen. Teaching the second takes longer and survives the examination.

The remedy is volume with articulation. Each mechanism drawn repeatedly, with the origin of every arrow stated aloud before the pen moves, until the statement is automatic. Four to six sessions does this properly for Higher Level. Drawing on a shared digital surface matters here more than in most topics, because the same wrong arrow origin reappearing three weeks later is visible on the saved record rather than remembered as general carelessness.

There is a timing argument too. A student who previews organic nomenclature and the main reaction types over the summer before Year 13 arrives at the taught course with the vocabulary already in place, which converts a hard winter term into a manageable one. That is one of the better uses of a summer block in this subject, and it costs four to six sessions at a point in the year when nothing is competing for them.

04

Calculation chains, rounding and the marks that vanish quietly

  • Carry full precision through; round only the final stated answer
  • Write the unit beside every quantity as it is written down
  • A stated sign with a stated reason earns marks a bare number does not
  • Half-equations must balance charge as well as atoms
  • All four losses are visible on a marked Paper 2 script

Chemistry is full of multi-step calculations, and the mark scheme is unforgiving about the end of them. A student who rounds an intermediate value to three significant figures in step two will produce a final answer far enough from the accepted value that the accuracy mark is refused, even though every step of the method was correct. The method marks usually survive; the final mark does not, and in a multi-mark question that can be most of it.

The habit to build is simple and unnatural: carry full calculator precision through every intermediate step and round only the final stated answer, to the number of significant figures the question or the data justifies. Students round early because it looks tidy and because it feels like showing care. Naming that specifically, with a marked script in front of them where it happened, changes the habit faster than any general instruction to be careful.

The second quiet loss is units. A concentration quoted without mol per cubic decimetre, an enthalpy change without kilojoules per mole, a volume slipped between cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres. These are checkable mechanically: writing the unit beside every quantity as it is written down catches nearly all of them. The third is the sign on an enthalpy or free energy change, where a stated sign with a stated reason earns marks that a bare number does not.

The fourth is balancing. Half-equations attempted without balancing charge, and ionic equations written with the species but not the charges reconciled, score nothing despite being nearly right. That is a mechanical check that takes seconds and gets skipped under time pressure. All four of these are visible on a marked Paper 2 script within a few minutes, which is why the first chemistry session reads a script rather than beginning a topic.

05

The data booklet and periodic table: what is supplied and what is not

Chemistry supplies more reference material in the examination than most subjects, and candidates routinely under-use it. The data booklet carries relationships, constants, characteristic infrared absorptions and nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts. The periodic table supplies relative atomic masses. A student who has never opened the relevant pages will lose marks on questions that require nothing more than looking something up correctly, and will waste time recalling things that were printed.

Spectroscopy is the clearest case. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance questions are essentially data-booklet exercises: match the absorption to the functional group, match the chemical shift to the environment, count the equivalent protons. A candidate fluent in those pages answers them quickly and reliably. A candidate meeting the pages for the first time under time pressure will guess. The difference is twenty minutes of reading at home, weeks earlier.

There is an equally important negative list: what the booklet does not supply. Definitions, mechanisms, qualitative explanations and the reasoning behind a trend all have to be known. Students who assume everything is provided arrive without having memorised the small set of things that are genuinely required, which is a worse error than the opposite one because it is invisible until the paper.

The practical action is a session spent with the booklet open, annotating which pages matter for which topic and which question types are effectively look-up exercises. It is unglamorous, it takes an hour, and it is among the highest-return hours available in the subject. The table below groups the common question types by whether the booklet answers them.

06

From the mock to May: the eight-week chemistry block

  • Week one diagnoses and teaches nothing
  • Content that arrived in January is first teaching, not revision
  • Paper 3 at Higher Level must be in the plan before the final week
  • Each fortnight ends with timed evidence the repair held

The spring of Year 13 is when most Dubai South families arrange chemistry support, and the plan that works is narrow. Eight weeks, two sessions a week, structured in four fortnights with a job each and a timed checkpoint at the end of each. It cannot cover the syllabus and should not try. What it can do is attack what the mock script exposes, in priority order, and convert content the student half-knows into marks.

Week one reads the script and teaches nothing. The findings that matter are whether the paper was finished, whether the losses are concentrated in a few topics or spread thinly, and whether marks went on chemistry the student does not know or on calculation discipline they do. Those three produce three different plans from the same grade, and teaching in the first hour makes the remaining fifteen sessions less accurate.

Chemistry has one legitimate exception to the no-new-content rule. Topics that arrived in January — frequently organic at Higher Level, or transition metals, or entropy — may genuinely not have been taught properly before the mock, in which case they are not revision but first teaching. Identifying which topics those are is part of week one, because a student cannot revise something they never covered and the distinction changes the plan entirely.

The final fortnight is whole papers and pacing. At Higher Level that has to include Paper 3, because its data-analysis and option content is examined separately and most candidates arrive never having attempted a whole one. A block that reaches the final fortnight without Paper 3 practice has left accessible marks on the table, and the table below places it deliberately rather than leaving it to whatever time remains.

07

Ramadan, the breaks and laboratory access

  • Laboratory access narrows in shortened school days and closes in the breaks
  • Plan investigation data collection for term time, never for a break
  • During Ramadan: shorter sessions after iftar, timed practice over new content
  • Mechanism drill holds up late in the evening better than calculation work
  • The summer before Year 13 is the highest-value block in the subject

The UAE calendar interacts with chemistry in one way it does not with other subjects: laboratory access. Investigation data collection needs booked laboratory time with technician support, and that availability narrows during shortened school days and disappears during the breaks. A student planning to collect data in the spring break will find the laboratory closed, which is an obvious point that is nonetheless discovered late every year.

During Ramadan, school hours shorten and afternoon concentration drops. The practical adjustments for chemistry are to move sessions after iftar, shorten them from ninety minutes to sixty, and switch from new content to timed question practice, which costs less concentration per mark gained. Mechanism drill is a reasonable exception, because it is repetitive rather than demanding and holds up better late in the evening than a Hess cycle does.

The breaks are where the uninterrupted work belongs. A full timed Paper 2 marked and reviewed within forty-eight hours while the student still remembers their reasoning needs consecutive days, not a weekly hour. So does writing up an investigation whose data was collected earlier in term. The winter break of Year 13 is the single most valuable fortnight in the chemistry calendar and the one most often spent on nothing in particular.

For a Year 12 student the summer before Year 13 is the equivalent opportunity. Four to six sessions closing quantitative gaps and previewing organic nomenclature converts the hardest term of the course into an ordinary one. Nothing competes for the time, the student is rested, and the material is exactly the material that will arrive in January. In this cluster that block is the most under-booked thing we offer and the one that changes the most.

08

Shaping chemistry spend across two years, in AED

Because chemistry has three fixed pressure points, a flat weekly commitment across two years spends money in the wrong places. The sensible shape is a lighter Year 12 aimed at quantitative fluency, a concentrated block around the investigation, a summer block before Year 13 covering gaps and previewing organic, then a heavier spring for mechanisms, timed papers and Paper 3 at Higher Level.

The bands to budget against are published. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240-600 a month for budget provision, AED 600-1,200 for mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Published monthly packages include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Hourly, the ladder is clear. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the budget end, both online and typically delivered by university students. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200 for qualified subject tutors. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 or more, and BartyED quotes AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180-350, with independent tutors up to AED 500 once travel is in the hour.

In chemistry specifically the cheap hour is frequently the expensive one. A student losing marks to early rounding, missing units and misdrawn mechanisms needs somebody who recognises those as separate marked faults. A generalist will reteach the topic, which the student broadly has, and the next script will look the same. Every figure above belongs to the provider named; these are market bands, not an IB Gram price list, and our own conversation begins with a free trial lesson.

Nearby areas we cover around Dubai South

Communities taught from Dubai South on the same terms. The specialist pool does not vary between them once delivery is online; the session slot does.

Dubai South

The district around Al Maktoum International and the Expo site. School runs mostly end in Dubai Investments Park, putting families home between 16:00 and 16:30 and setting the earliest realistic chemistry slot at about 16:30.

Emaar South

Golf-course villas and townhouses with a younger age profile, so Middle Years science demand runs ahead of Diploma chemistry here. Bookings cluster between 16:45 and 18:00 and investigation work moves to weekend mornings.

Al Furjan

North on the Sheikh Zayed side with its own metro station and British-curriculum schools. Students here commonly sit IGCSE Chemistry before joining a Diploma cohort elsewhere, which makes summer transition blocks a recurring request each July.

Dubai Investments Park

The school cluster for this corner of the emirate, with IB continuum provision alongside British and SABIS schools. The shortest school run in the group, and the only one where a 16:00 weekday slot is routinely workable.

Jebel Ali

The established zone west of the cluster with long-standing British and Indian-curriculum schools. Students arriving into Diploma Chemistry from here often have strong IGCSE quantitative work behind them and weaker organic depth.

Discovery Gardens

Apartment density with a cost-aware parent population. Chemistry sessions cluster after 18:00 because working parents prefer to be home while a lesson runs, which caps how many sessions a week a plan can hold.

Green Community

Low-rise housing inside Dubai Investments Park, minutes from the schools, and the community in this group where an early weekday chemistry slot is most reliably available through term.

Dubai Production City

North-east of the cluster with school runs to Motor City and Sports City. The longer drive pushes sessions past 17:30, so organic mechanism blocks here usually sit at weekends when there is more concentration available.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Ask the department two dates

When is the investigation due, and when does the scheme of work reach organic chemistry. Those two answers shape a chemistry plan more than any other information available, and both come from one email. In this cluster they differ by several weeks between neighbouring schools, so an assumption is not usable.

  2. 02

Name the level, the component and the Paper 3 option

Higher or Standard, which paper is weak, and which option the school teaches at Higher Level. The option affects matching because not every chemistry teacher has taught every one. A request that says only chemistry costs a diagnostic session that then has to be re-aimed.

  3. 03

Send a marked Paper 2 script

Paper 2 shows whether losses are conceptual, calculation discipline, units, signs or balancing, and those five are indistinguishable from a grade. An unfinished paper is a pacing diagnosis on its own. Where no script exists, the first session makes one from a timed section.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson that returns a term plan

One full session at no charge and no card, taught by the person who would take the term. It returns a written diagnosis in priority order and a plan placed against the school's dates, including whether a summer block before Year 13 is worth booking. A wrong match is rematched.

  5. 05

Book laboratory time before designing the experiment

Find out what the department can supply and when the laboratory is available, then negotiate the investigation question against that. Doing it the other way round produces a question the school cannot support, which is the commonest reason a chemistry investigation has to be restarted.

  6. 06

Place Paper 3 and mechanisms deliberately

At Higher Level both need their own blocks rather than whatever time is left. Mechanisms need volume with articulation; Paper 3 needs whole sections under timed conditions because its data-analysis types repeat. A plan that reaches the final fortnight without either has left accessible marks behind.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Planned against the school's dates, not a generic year

The investigation deadline and the point at which organic chemistry lands differ by weeks between schools in this cluster, and both change what the hours should do. The first conversation here is about those two dates rather than about topics, because a plan aimed at the wrong month spends well and achieves little.

Mechanisms taught as electron movement, not as pictures

Memorised diagrams fail the moment a question presents an unfamiliar substrate. Stating the origin of every arrow aloud before drawing it builds something that survives the examination. Drawn on a shared surface and saved, so a recurring wrong origin becomes visible evidence rather than a sense of carelessness.

Calculation discipline treated as a marked skill

Early rounding, missing units, unexplained signs and unbalanced half-equations are four separate faults with four separate fixes, and all four are invisible in a grade. They are visible on a marked Paper 2 script in minutes, which is why the first session reads a script rather than starting a topic.

The investigation sequenced around real constraints

Reagents the school can supply, chemistry already taught, a pilot run students always skip, and booked laboratory time the department controls. Negotiating the question against those constraints first prevents the commonest failure in chemistry internal assessment, which is a question that cannot actually be run.

AED figures with sources, shaped by stage

Every band here is attributed to the provider that published it and mapped onto the stage of the two years where the spend belongs. A flat weekly commitment across two years puts money where the deadlines are not. Three of the most visible competitors in this market publish no price at all.

No regulator claims and no UAE centre

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE or IB approval, accreditation or partnership and operates no office or centre in the UAE. Regulators are explained here because the explanation helps a parent decide, not because the names add standing we do not hold.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai South: your questions answered

When does organic chemistry arrive in the IB course?+

In most schemes of work it lands in Year 13, often in the winter term, which puts it on a cohort simultaneously finishing an Extended Essay, completing university applications and sitting mocks. Schools in this part of Dubai reach it at noticeably different points, so the only reliable answer comes from asking your child's department. The timing matters because organic has the least forgiving mark scheme in the subject and because a summer preview of nomenclature and reaction types converts a difficult winter term into an ordinary one.

Why do mechanism marks disappear entirely rather than partly?+

Because a curly arrow either starts from the correct lone pair or bond or it does not, and examiners do not award a half-drawn mechanism. A student who learned mechanisms as pictures to reproduce can handle the six they memorised and has nothing to fall back on when a question presents an unfamiliar substrate. A student who can say where the electrons start and why will construct correct arrows for a reaction they have never seen. Teaching the second takes four to six sessions and survives the examination hall.

How much of the IB Chemistry grade is the investigation?+

Twenty per cent at both Higher and Standard Level. It is marked on criteria that reward a methodology addressing all relevant variables and processing that is correct and includes uncertainties, so a set of clean titration results with no error treatment caps the mark however neat the report looks. In chemistry it carries an extra constraint: the question has to be answerable with reagents and equipment the school can safely supply, within laboratory time the department controls, using analysis the student has already been taught.

What does early rounding actually cost in a chemistry calculation?+

The accuracy mark on an otherwise correct question, which in a multi-mark calculation can be most of the available credit. Rounding an intermediate value to three significant figures in step two produces a final answer far enough from the accepted value that the mark scheme refuses it, even though every step of the method was right. The habit to build is carrying full calculator precision through and rounding only the final stated answer, to the significant figures the data justifies. It is a two-session fix.

Which pages of the chemistry data booklet matter most?+

The characteristic infrared absorption ranges and, at Higher Level, the nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shift ranges, because spectroscopy questions are effectively look-up exercises for a candidate who knows where to look and guesswork for one who does not. Relative atomic masses come from the periodic table. Equally important is the negative list: definitions, mechanisms and the reasoning behind a trend are not supplied and must be known. An hour spent annotating the booklet weeks in advance is among the highest-return revision actions in the subject.

Can my child collect investigation data during the spring break?+

Almost never, because the school laboratory will be closed and technician support unavailable. This is an obvious constraint that is nonetheless discovered late every year. Data collection has to be booked into term time, which means the question must be settled and the pilot run completed before the break rather than during it. What the breaks are genuinely good for is the write-up: processing data already collected, and drafting, both of which need consecutive uninterrupted days rather than a weekly hour.

What does Higher Level chemistry add for a Dubai South student?+

Content, a third paper and a higher analytical bar. It adds content, adds Paper 3, and raises the analytical demand of the markbands at the top. The additional content is entropy and spontaneity, equilibrium calculations, transition metal chemistry and deeper organic, and most of it arrives in Year 13 when time is already short. Paper 3 is the component that catches unprepared Higher Level candidates, because it examines data analysis and a chosen option separately from the core, so revising Papers 1 and 2 content does not prepare anyone for it.

What should a Dubai South student do in the summer before Year 13?+

Four to six sessions closing quantitative gaps and previewing organic nomenclature and the main reaction types. Nothing competes for the time, the student is rested, and the material is exactly what will arrive in the hardest term of the course. In this cluster that block is the most under-booked thing we offer and the one that changes the most, because it converts a winter term carrying organic, mocks, the Extended Essay and applications into a term carrying three of those rather than four.

Why do half-equations score nothing when they look nearly right?+

Because a half-equation that balances atoms but not charge is not a valid equation, and the mark scheme treats it accordingly. Students lose these marks under time pressure, not through ignorance: the charge check takes seconds and gets skipped. The same applies to ionic equations where the species are right and the charges are never reconciled. Building the check into the writing habit, rather than leaving it as a final review step that never happens, is the fix and it takes about one session to establish.

Does IB Gram send a chemistry tutor to a Dubai South address?+

No. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only and no tutor is sent to any UAE address. Dubai South students are taught live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the marked script, the markband and the data booklet open on a shared screen and mechanisms drawn on a shared surface that is saved week to week. For chemistry that record earns its keep, because a wrong arrow origin recurring across three weeks becomes evidence rather than an impression.

When is the best time to start chemistry tutoring in the Diploma?+

Year 12, and this is the opposite of when most families start. In the first year the quantitative foundation is being laid, the class is still introducing topics, and a weakness can be repaired slowly rather than patched. By the spring of Year 13 half the syllabus is three months old, the investigation has been submitted, and the same hours buy less. Both are worth doing. They are simply not equally valuable per hour, and the difference is large enough to be worth acting on.

What goes in the final fortnight of a chemistry plan?+

Whole papers and pacing, with nothing new attempted, and at Higher Level that must include Paper 3. Most Higher Level candidates arrive at May never having attempted a whole Paper 3, which leaves accessible marks behind because its data-analysis question types repeat across sessions. Three or four short sessions a week work better than two long ones at that stage, because concentration rather than available time is the limit. The night-before material should be a one-page list, not a textbook.

Can a tutor suggest my child's investigation question?+

A tutor may discuss a question the student proposes, reject one the laboratory cannot support or whose analysis needs chemistry not yet taught, and push until the question is answerable. What a tutor may not do is choose it on the student's behalf, supply data, write any section or edit a draft to completion. The permitted feedback is one round on one complete draft the student has written. A malpractice finding falls on the student's Diploma, which is why any offer of a finished investigation should be refused on sight.

How does Ramadan change chemistry sessions in Dubai?+

School hours shorten and afternoon concentration drops, so sessions move later into the evening after iftar and shorten from ninety minutes to sixty. Content teaching gives way to timed question practice, which costs less concentration per mark gained. Mechanism drill is a reasonable exception, because it is repetitive rather than cognitively demanding and holds up late in the evening better than a Hess cycle does. Dropping from two sessions a week to one for the month, and moving heavy work into the spring break, usually works better than persisting.

What does chemistry support cost across two years in Dubai?+

It depends on the shape more than the rate. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 600-1,200 for mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, and qualified online subject tutors sit at AED 150-300 an hour with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. A plan that is lighter in Year 12, concentrated around the investigation and the summer, then heavier in the spring of Year 13 costs less than a flat weekly commitment. These are market bands from the providers named, not IB Gram prices.

Which IB schools near Dubai South teach Diploma Chemistry?+

Most students on this page are in the Dubai Investments Park and Green Community cluster, where IB continuum provision sits alongside British and SABIS schools, or travel east to the Dubailand corridor for an IB continuum school. Those Dubailand schools supply most of the Higher Level chemistry demand in this corner of the emirate. KHDA publishes annual inspection ratings for every one of them on its own site, which is the document worth reading before an admissions conversation. IB Gram has no affiliation with any school named here.

Ask the department when organic lands and when the investigation is due

An IB chemistry tutor in Dubai South is working against three fixed points: the investigation deadline, the term organic chemistry arrives, and the May papers. Get the first two dates from your child's department, tell us the level, the weak component and the Paper 3 option, and send a recent marked Paper 2. The free trial lesson returns a written diagnosis and a plan placed against those dates, including whether a summer block before Year 13 is worth booking. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are an India-only service.
