IB & IGCSE in Dubai South

Which science route is your child entered for, and why nobody told you

There is a question that should be asked before any science tutoring is arranged in Dubai South and almost never is. Is your child taking three separate sciences, a double award, or a single combined award? Those are different entries with different content lists, different paper structures and different numbers of grades at the end. A tutor given past papers from the wrong route will teach accurate science towards a paper the student will not sit, which is the commonest avoidable waste in IGCSE science support.

Schools make the entry decision, often in Year 9 or early Year 10, and communicate it in a sentence buried in an options booklet. Parents reasonably assume that science is science. It is not: Cambridge 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry and 0625 Physics are three separate syllabuses each with its own papers, while Combined Science and Co-ordinated Science reduce the content and restructure the examination. Checking which appears on your child's timetable takes a minute and determines everything that follows.

The second thing nobody mentions is Paper 6. In Cambridge sciences, the alternative to practical paper examines experimental skills on paper rather than in a laboratory: identifying variables, reading instruments, spotting sources of error, completing results tables and suggesting improvements. It carries real marks, its question types repeat across series, and it is reliably the last thing anyone revises because it does not feel like content. For a candidate who has worked hard and keeps underscoring, it is frequently the cheapest available improvement in the whole timetable.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run in India only. Dubai South students are taught live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the marked script and the official mark scheme shared on screen, and diagrams and graphs drawn on a shared surface that is saved week to week. For the sciences that record matters: a graph axis unlabelled in week three and again in week nine is visible on the page rather than remembered as carelessness.

One factual note before the detail. KHDA oversees the quality of private education in Dubai, inspects schools annually and publishes the ratings. It does not accredit private tutors, and IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, approval or partnership and operates no UAE centre. Individual tutors in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Ask to see it, then ask which syllabus codes they have taught and at which tier. The permit is a legal licence to teach privately in the UAE and says nothing about whether somebody has ever marked a Paper 6 script, which is the question that actually decides whether the hours will help your child.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Dubai South students meet IGCSE science after Key Stage 3, or take Middle Years Sciences instead to the same age. The route chosen at sixteen then shapes what is available at A Level or in the IB Diploma.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 science

Three years of general science with no external examination, which means no early warning. The transferable skills are unit handling, graph reading, structured written explanation and the arithmetic behind a calculation. A weakness in any of them is invisible until the first IGCSE mock, by which point the student is also meeting new content and the easy repair window has closed.

In Dubai South the Key Stage 3 years are also when the school decides the science entry route and the board. Whether triple award is offered at all varies between the Al Furjan, Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park schools, and the decision is frequently made on timetable capacity rather than on the individual child. Ask in Year 9 rather than in Year 10.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE sciences

Two years, externally examined, with Core and Extended tiering on Cambridge sciences carrying different grade ceilings. Cambridge sets a theory paper structure plus Paper 6, the alternative to practical. Pearson handles practical assessment differently. Grading runs 9 to 1 on Pearson and on reformed Cambridge subjects, with A*-G still in use on some.

Dubai South candidates sit the June series with November as the resit route. Entry is made by the school as the examination centre months in advance. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative timetable zones, each with its own version, and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Sciences

The IB route for the same age band, marked against four criteria from A to D on a 0-8 scale and converted to a 1-7 grade. Criterion B rewards inquiring and designing and criterion D rewards reflecting on the impacts of science, so a student can hold a strong grade with good investigation design while quantitative work lags well behind.

Several schools serving Dubai South run Middle Years Sciences rather than IGCSE, so two children of the same age in neighbouring villas face entirely different assessment. A family moving between the systems mid-secondary needs the gap mapped across a holiday, because the content overlaps substantially while the assessment format does not overlap at all.

Post-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level and IB Diploma sciences

What the IGCSE route feeds into. A triple award student has the widest set of options at sixteen; a combined science student may find a sixth form's entry requirement for a science A Level or Higher Level Diploma subject harder to satisfy. That consequence is set two years earlier by an entry decision most families were not consulted on.

Students in this cluster split between A Level sixth forms in the British-curriculum schools and Diploma cohorts in the IB continuum schools of Dubai Investments Park and the Dubailand corridor. Getting the post-16 entry requirement in writing during Year 10 is the practical way to test whether the current science route keeps the intended door open.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The components and topics a Dubai South science candidate needs work on, broken out by subject and by where marks actually go.

Biology 0610 theory papers

Core and Extended

High recall volume, so marks come from structured note compression rather than rereading, and from command-term discipline. Describe, explain and suggest demand different answers, and writing a full explanation where describe was asked spends examination time without gaining credit. Transport, genetics and ecology reward diagram work.

Chemistry 0620 theory papers

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and the qualitative analysis tables carry the widest spread of marks, and both are procedural enough to be learned in a compressed block. Ionic equations attempted without balancing charge score nothing. Organic chemistry at this level is nomenclature and reaction type rather than mechanism.

Physics 0625 theory papers

Core and Extended

Unit prefixes and gradient interpretation account for a disproportionate share of losses. Questions asking a student to describe an experiment fail when the controlled variable is not named. Electricity questions fail on circuit reading: redrawing an awkward printed circuit before analysing it converts a hard question into a routine one.

Paper 6: alternative to practical

All three Cambridge sciences

Examines experimental skills on paper. Candidates identify independent, dependent and controlled variables, read scales and instruments, complete results tables with correct headings and units, plot and interpret graphs, identify sources of error and suggest improvements. Question types repeat across series, which makes it the most efficient component to practise.

Qualitative analysis in chemistry

Extended

The flame tests, precipitate colours and gas tests that a candidate has to produce from memory or from the supplied tables. Pure recall with a fixed answer set, which makes it a reliable source of marks for anybody who drills it and a reliable loss for anybody who assumes it will come back on the day.

Graph work across the sciences

All tiers

Axis labels with quantity and unit, sensible scales, a line of best fit through the spread rather than between endpoints, and gradients read with a large triangle. Each of these earns marks independently of the science, which makes graph technique one of the best uses of a session for a student who understands the content.

Required practicals and experiment description

All tiers

Questions asking how an experiment would be carried out are marked on method rather than on outcome: named apparatus, the variable changed, the variables controlled, what is measured and how often. A student who answers in general terms loses marks that a structured four-line answer would have collected.

Calculations and significant figures

Extended and Higher

Not a topic but a marked skill across all three sciences. Early rounding in a multi-step calculation yields a final answer the mark scheme rejects. Carrying full precision through and rounding only the stated answer is a two-session habit that recovers marks on every paper the student sits.

Combined and Co-ordinated Science

Double and single award

A reduced content list across the three sciences with its own paper structure, producing fewer grades than three separate entries. Students sometimes assume the grade ceiling is lower; it is the content coverage and the number of certificates that differ. Past papers from the separate sciences are not interchangeable with these.

Pearson Edexcel sciences 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1

Single tier each

Pearson's International GCSE sciences, used by some schools in this cluster. The content is broadly comparable to Cambridge and the question styles differ, with longer contextual stems and a different treatment of practical skills. A student transferring mid-course needs four sessions of adjustment rather than a term.

Command terms across the sciences

All tiers

State, describe, explain, suggest, compare and calculate each demand a specific answer shape. Misreading the verb is the single commonest reason a competent candidate sits mid-band across all three sciences simultaneously, and it is fixable in a handful of sessions because the list is short and published.

Biology diagram and process questions

Core and Extended

Questions on transport systems, the heart, the nephron and the eye reward a labelled diagram over a paragraph. Candidates who sketch before writing routinely outperform those who describe from memory, because the diagram enforces the order of the process and the order is where the marks sit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four formats Dubai South families use for IGCSE science, chosen by how many subjects are in play and where in the two years the student is. All are live one-to-one video with a matched specialist.

Single-subject weekly tuition

One science, one session a week, with work set and marked. The right starting point when one of the three is clearly weaker than the others, which is the usual pattern rather than the exception. Adding a second science before the first is stable generally slows both.

  • 60 or 90 minutes in a fixed weekly slot
  • Past papers from the correct board, tier and route
  • A short written note after each session naming the next target
  • Diagrams and graphs drawn on a shared surface and saved

Two-science blocks with one specialist

Common in Year 11 where weakness spans two sciences and the cause is shared, usually graph work, calculation discipline or command-term reading. One specialist who can see the common thread treats it once rather than twice, which is both cheaper and faster than two separate tutors treating two symptoms.

  • Two subjects, one tutor, alternating weeks or a split session
  • Shared diagnosis written down after the first fortnight
  • Graph and calculation technique treated once across both
  • Separate past-paper sets so each syllabus is respected

Paper 6 technique blocks

Four to six sessions on the alternative to practical paper alone, because its question types repeat across series and almost nobody drills them. For a student who understands the science and keeps underscoring, this is frequently the single cheapest improvement available in the whole examination timetable.

  • Variables, instruments and error sources worked through systematically
  • Results tables with correct headings and units practised repeatedly
  • Graph plotting and interpretation under timed conditions
  • Past Paper 6 questions marked against the official scheme

Pre-series intensives

Two or three sessions a week for four to six weeks before the June or November papers, built entirely on timed questions with no new content. The work is pacing, command words, mark-scheme vocabulary and the specific topics the student's own scripts show as weak across whichever sciences are being sat.

  • Every session anchored to a timed paper or section
  • Marked against the official scheme, wording compared line by line
  • Paper 6 included deliberately rather than if time allows
  • A written list of what still costs marks in each subject

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai South

01

Triple, double and combined: three different entries

  • Read the codes on the timetable: three codes means three sciences
  • Past papers are not interchangeable between routes
  • The school usually decided this in Year 9 without a conversation
  • A combined grade may not satisfy a science A Level entry requirement

This is the question that has to be settled first, because everything downstream depends on it. A triple award student takes Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three separate syllabuses, sits the full paper set for each, and receives three grades. A double award student takes a reduced combined content list, sits a different paper structure and receives two grades. A single combined award produces one grade from a further reduced content list.

The practical differences are not subtle. Content coverage differs, so a topic examined on 0625 Physics may simply not appear on the combined syllabus. Paper structure differs, so past papers from the separate sciences cannot be used to prepare a combined candidate. Timetable load differs sharply, which matters in Year 11 when three sciences each want revision hours from the same evenings. And the number of certificates differs, which can affect a post-16 entry requirement two years later.

Schools make this decision, usually in Year 9 or early Year 10, and typically on a mixture of the student's attainment and the school's timetable capacity. Families are rarely consulted in detail and frequently do not realise a choice was made. The first useful action for a Dubai South parent is to look at the child's timetable or last report and read the codes: three codes means three sciences, and anything else means a combined route.

There is one consequence worth raising early rather than at results. A combined science grade may not satisfy a sixth form's entry requirement for a science A Level or for a Higher Level Diploma science. If the student has any intention of a science or engineering route, getting that requirement in writing during Year 10 is the cheapest available insurance, because the entry route can sometimes still be changed at that point and cannot be changed later.

Paper 6: the component nobody revises

  • Paper 6 question types repeat across series and reward recognition
  • Results table headings need the quantity and the unit to earn the mark
  • An improvement must address the named error, not urge more care
  • Triple award candidates sit three of these papers
  • Marks are awarded independently of understanding the science

In Cambridge sciences the alternative to practical paper examines experimental skills on paper, and it is the most consistently neglected component in the whole science timetable. It does not feel like revision because there is no content to learn, which is exactly why it is cheap to improve: the question types repeat across series and a student who has worked through two past papers recognises nearly everything the third one asks.

What it actually asks is specific. Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables in a described experiment. Read a scale or instrument to the correct precision. Complete a results table with the quantity and unit in the heading. Plot points accurately, draw a line of best fit through the spread, read a gradient. Identify a source of error and distinguish it from a mistake. Suggest a practical improvement that addresses the error named rather than a general one.

Each of those is a learnable procedure with a predictable mark scheme, and each is awarded independently of whether the student understands the underlying science. A results table heading written as time rather than time in seconds loses the mark. A suggested improvement of being more careful loses the mark where naming a more precise instrument would have earned it. These are not deep failures; they are untaught conventions.

The reason this matters for a Dubai South family is arithmetic. A student taking triple award sits three of these papers. Four to six sessions of Paper 6 technique therefore pays into three subjects at once, which is a better return than the same hours spent on any single topic. For a candidate who understands the science and keeps scoring below expectation, it is usually the first place to look and almost never where anyone looks first.

03

Core against Extended across the three sciences

Cambridge sciences tier into Core and Extended, with Core capping the grade available and covering a reduced content list. Because science entries are made per subject, a student can be Extended in one science and Core in another, which happens more often than families realise and produces reports that look inconsistent when they are simply describing two different entries.

The decision rests with the school and is usually made in Year 10 on class performance. Over-entry and under-entry both cost marks. A student placed on Extended who cannot handle the calculation work will sit papers designed for somebody else; a student placed on Core who was always capable of Extended loses grades they could have had, and will never know, because the ceiling is invisible from inside.

Evidence is what reopens the conversation, and it has to be the right kind. A full timed Extended paper, sat under conditions and marked against the official scheme, is a document a subject lead can act on. The assertion that a child is capable is not. That is a specific, achievable goal for a term of Year 10 tutoring and it is the main reason Year 10 hours are worth more per hour than Year 11 hours in the sciences.

If the tier is discovered late, one question remains useful. The November series exists with a fresh entry, which means a student who hits a Core ceiling in June can be entered at Extended for November with an autumn term of properly aimed preparation behind them. That decision has to be made in the days after August results rather than in October, because the entry goes through the school months before the papers.

Where marks go in each science, specifically

The losses differ by subject and knowing which you are dealing with changes the plan. In Biology the volume of recall is the problem rather than the difficulty of any single idea, and the marks go on command-term discipline: describe, explain and suggest demand different answers, and writing the longest possible response to a two-mark question costs time the final question needs. Diagram-based process questions reward sketching before writing, because the diagram enforces the order of the process.

In Chemistry the spread sits in mole calculations and the qualitative analysis tables. Ionic equations attempted without balancing charge score nothing despite looking nearly right, which is a mechanical check that takes seconds and gets skipped. Early rounding in a multi-step calculation produces a final answer the scheme rejects even when the method was correct. Organic chemistry at this level is nomenclature and reaction type, which makes it one of the most recoverable topics in a short block.

In Physics the losses concentrate in unit prefixes, gradient interpretation and circuit reading. A correct calculation with a wrong power of ten is simply wrong. A question asking a student to describe an experiment fails when the controlled variable is never named. Electricity questions on deliberately awkward printed circuits are routine once the circuit is redrawn in a standard layout and hard if it is not, and the redrawing takes ninety seconds.

Across all three, command terms and graph technique are shared faults with a shared fix. That is why a student weak in two sciences is often better served by one specialist treating the common thread than by two tutors each addressing their own subject. The table collects the subject-specific traps so a student can audit their own marked scripts against the list, which is the first thing a session here does anyway.

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel in the sciences

Schools in this cluster use both boards, sometimes differently across subjects, and the syllabus code on the timetable is the only reliable way to know. Cambridge sciences are 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry and 0625 Physics. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. The content is broadly comparable at this level and the examination experience is not.

The clearest difference is practical assessment. Cambridge sets Paper 6, the alternative to practical, as a separate paper examining experimental skills on paper. Pearson integrates practical skills differently across its papers. That has a direct consequence for revision: a Cambridge candidate needs Paper 6 question practice as a discrete block, while a Pearson candidate needs practical-skills questions identified within the main papers instead.

The second difference is question style. Cambridge tends towards shorter, more compartmentalised questions. Pearson tends towards longer contextual stems where the science has to be extracted from a described situation before it can be applied. A candidate trained on one and examined on the other loses time on reading rather than on science, which is why a tutor must work from the correct board from the first session rather than discovering the mismatch in week four.

Series availability is the third. Cambridge runs June and November, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Neither offers a February or March series to UAE candidates; that one is for India only. Cambridge additionally allocates every centre to one of six administrative timetable zones and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable, so confirm the zone with the school.

Three sciences in one Year 11 timetable

A triple award candidate in Dubai South has a workload problem as well as a science problem, and treating only the second is why so many science plans fail. Three separate syllabuses each want revision hours, each has its own mock, and each has a Paper 6. Those demands land on the same evenings, and a plan that books three weekly sessions will usually collapse by half term because there is no time left for the independent practice that makes sessions work.

The arithmetic that helps is to find the shared faults. Command-term misreading, graph technique, calculation discipline and significant figures are faults that show up across all three sciences simultaneously. Treating them once, with one specialist, pays into three subjects. That converts what looks like a three-tutor problem into a one-tutor problem plus targeted subject work where a genuine content gap exists.

The second move is to sequence rather than parallelise. One science at a time, four to six weeks each, with the weakest first, works better than three in parallel at a third of the depth. It also produces a clearer diagnosis, because a student working on one subject's scripts with full attention reveals patterns that three simultaneous half-efforts obscure. Triple award candidates in this cluster who sequence generally finish the year ahead of those who parallelise.

The third is Paper 6. Four to six sessions on alternative to practical technique pays into all three subjects at once and is the single highest-leverage block available to a triple award candidate. It is also the easiest to justify to a reluctant student, because the work is procedural rather than conceptual and the improvement shows up quickly on past papers. The table sets out how a triple award year can be sequenced rather than spread thin.

What IGCSE science tutoring costs in Dubai, and what three subjects imply

The published Dubai bands split by provider model rather than by subject, so the science-specific question is how many subjects are being bought. Budget online platforms advertise from AED 33-52 an hour on Tutopiya and AED 45-65 on EdFlik, usually delivered by university students. Agencies with qualified subject tutors publish higher: Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200.

In-home provision sits apart. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350, with independent home tutors quoted up to AED 500 once travel is priced into the hour. TutorChase quotes AED 270 and BartyED reaches AED 650 for premium named tutors. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240-600 budget, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support.

For a triple award family the implication is straightforward: three weekly sessions at a specialist rate is a large commitment and usually the wrong shape anyway. Sequencing one subject at a time, with a Paper 6 and technique block paying into all three, costs considerably less than three parallel weekly sessions and produces more, because the hours concentrate rather than spread.

Published monthly packages illustrate the delivery-model difference clearly: AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599-1,799 for four in-home sessions of two hours. Most of that gap is the driving being paid for rather than better teaching. Every figure here belongs to the provider named; these are market bands rather than an IB Gram price list, and three of the most visible competitors in this market publish no price at all while two quote in US dollars.

Online delivery, and where it helps most in science

For IGCSE sciences the specialist pool is reasonably deep, so the online case rests less on access than it does for Higher Level Diploma subjects. Where it earns its keep instead is the working record. Diagrams, circuits, graphs and calculation chains drawn on a shared digital surface persist, which means an axis left unlabelled in week three and again in week nine is visible on the page rather than recalled as a general tendency to be careless.

The second advantage is scheduling, and for a triple award household it is decisive. A visiting tutor fits one session an evening. An online tutor fits several, which matters when two children in secondary school both need a slot, or when one child needs a science block and a maths block in the same week. Families in Discovery Gardens and Dubai Production City in particular find that the later start times their commute forces are easier to accommodate online.

Where in-home genuinely wins is a younger child who will not settle at a screen, and a parent's ability to observe from the next room. Both are real and both weigh less for a Year 11 candidate working through marked past papers, where the material is two documents best read side by side. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all, so there is nothing to soften in this comparison; independent in-home tutors operate in this part of Dubai if presence is the priority.

On availability, the honest position is that Biology, Chemistry and Physics at IGCSE are all reasonably well covered and a match usually takes a few days. Combined and Co-ordinated Science specifically is thinner, because fewer tutors have taught that paper structure, and a request can take longer. Where nobody suitable is free we say so and give a date rather than putting a separate-sciences tutor in front of a combined candidate with the wrong past papers.

The school cluster for this corner of the emirate, with British, IB continuum, Indian and SABIS provision close together. The shortest school run in the group and the widest choice of early slots for a three-subject plan.

Jebel Ali

The established zone to the west with long-standing British and Indian-curriculum schools. Triple award candidates come disproportionately from here, which changes the shape of a science plan because three subjects compete for the same evenings.

Discovery Gardens

Apartment density with a cost-aware parent population and a strong interest in what each AED band buys. Sessions cluster after 18:00, which limits how many subjects a week a plan can realistically hold.

Green Community

Low-rise housing inside Dubai Investments Park, minutes from the schools, and the community here where a 16:00 weekday science session works reliably in term time.

Dubai Production City

North-east of the cluster with school runs to Motor City and Sports City. The longer drive pushes sessions past 17:30, so a triple award plan here usually puts two of three subjects at weekends.

Al Furjan, Jebel Ali and Discovery Gardens

The British-curriculum arc supplying most IGCSE science candidates in this cluster. Whether triple award is offered, and which board is used, differs between these schools, so the entry route has to be confirmed before any plan is written.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Read the codes on the timetable

Three syllabus codes means three separate sciences; anything else means a combined route. Then note the board: 0610, 0620 and 0625 are Cambridge, while 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 are Pearson. Those two facts determine which past papers are usable, and getting them wrong wastes a term of accurate teaching.

  2. 02

    Confirm the tier per subject

Science entries are made subject by subject, so a student can be Extended in one and Core in another. That produces reports that look inconsistent and are simply describing two entries. Each one needs confirming separately, because the tier caps the grade before revision begins.

  3. 03

Send marked scripts, including a Paper 6 if there is one

Theory scripts show whether losses are content, command terms, units or calculation discipline. A Paper 6 script shows something different and usually more fixable. If no scripts exist, the first session produces one from a timed section in the weakest subject.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson with the matched specialist

One full session at no charge and no card, taught by the person who would take the block. It returns a written diagnosis separating shared faults from subject-specific gaps, and a proposal for sequencing rather than parallelising if three sciences are in play. A wrong match is rematched.

  5. 05

Start with Paper 6 and the shared faults

For a triple award candidate, four to six sessions on alternative to practical technique and command-term discipline pays into three subjects at once. That is better value than any single-topic block, and it is also the easiest work to sustain because the improvement shows up quickly on past papers.

  6. 06

Sequence the subjects, do not spread them

One science at a time for four to six weeks, weakest first, beats three in parallel at a third of the depth. It produces a clearer diagnosis and leaves room for the independent practice that makes sessions work. Three parallel weekly sessions in Year 11 usually collapse by half term.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the route as well as the subject

Triple award, double award and combined science are different entries with different content and different papers, and past papers are not interchangeable between them. Confirming the route and the codes before the first session is what prevents a term of accurate teaching aimed at a paper the student will not sit.

Paper 6 treated as examinable content

The alternative to practical paper carries real marks, its question types repeat across series, and almost nobody drills it because it does not feel like revision. For a triple award candidate, a short block on it pays into three subjects at once, which is the best return per hour available in IGCSE science.

Shared faults treated once

Command-term misreading, graph technique, significant figures and calculation discipline appear across all three sciences at the same time. One specialist treating the common thread is faster and cheaper than three tutors each addressing their own symptom, and it is a diagnosis most plans never make.

Working that survives the term

Diagrams, circuits and graphs drawn on a shared digital surface persist, so an unlabelled axis recurring across six weeks becomes visible evidence rather than an impression of carelessness. Loose paper passed across a table does not survive the term and a tutor relying on memory treats a pattern as a one-off.

AED figures with sources, and the three-subject arithmetic

Every band here is attributed to the provider that published it, and set against what three parallel weekly sessions would actually cost. Sequencing is cheaper and more effective, which is a conclusion the published numbers support rather than a sales position.

No regulator claims and no UAE centre

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership and operates no office or centre in the UAE. Regulators appear here because explaining what they do helps a parent decide, not because the names lend us anything we do not hold.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai South: your questions answered

How do I tell whether my child takes triple or combined science?+

Read the syllabus codes on the timetable or the last report. Three codes, such as 0610, 0620 and 0625, means three separate sciences and three grades. A single combined code means a reduced content list with its own paper structure and either one or two grades depending on the award. Schools usually make this decision in Year 9 or early Year 10 on a mixture of attainment and timetable capacity, and communicate it in one line of an options booklet, so most parents have never been told explicitly.

What is Paper 6 in Cambridge IGCSE sciences?+

It is the alternative to practical paper, examining experimental skills on paper rather than in a laboratory. Candidates identify independent, dependent and controlled variables, read instruments to the correct precision, complete results tables with quantity and unit in the headings, plot and interpret graphs, identify sources of error and suggest improvements that address the named error. The question types repeat across series, so working through two past papers makes most of a third recognisable. It is the single most neglected component in the science timetable.

Why does my child lose Paper 6 marks on questions with no science in them?+

Because the paper marks conventions the student was never taught. A results table heading written as time rather than time in seconds loses the mark. A suggested improvement of being more careful loses the mark where naming a more precise instrument would have earned it. A line of best fit drawn between the first and last points rather than through the spread loses the mark. None of these requires understanding the experiment, which is why four to six sessions of technique work moves the score so reliably.

Can my child be Extended in one science and Core in another?+

Yes, and it happens more often than families realise, because science entries are made subject by subject. That produces a report which looks inconsistent and is actually describing two different entries with two different grade ceilings. Each subject's tier therefore needs confirming separately before a plan is written, because the tier caps the achievable grade before any revision begins. A timed Extended paper marked against the official scheme is the evidence that reopens a conservative entry in Year 10.

Does combined science close off A Level or IB sciences later?+

It can, and that consequence is set two years before anyone notices it. Sixth forms set their own entry requirements for science A Levels and for Higher Level Diploma sciences, and a combined award grade may not satisfy them even when the grade itself looks respectable. The practical step is to get the requirement in writing from the intended sixth form during Year 10, while the entry route can sometimes still be changed. After the entry deadline it cannot, and the conversation becomes about alternatives instead.

Should a triple award student in Dubai South have three weekly sessions?+

Almost never. Three parallel weekly sessions leave no room for the independent practice that makes sessions work, and in this cluster such plans generally collapse by half term because three sciences, maths and everything else are competing for the same evenings. Sequencing works better: one science at a time for four to six weeks, weakest first, preceded by a Paper 6 and command-term block that pays into all three subjects simultaneously. It is cheaper and it produces a clearer diagnosis.

What are the shared faults across the three IGCSE sciences?+

Four of them, and they appear simultaneously. Misreading the command term, so that describe, explain and suggest get the wrong answer shape. Graph technique, where axis labels, scales, lines of best fit and gradient triangles each earn marks independently of the science. Significant figures and early rounding, which destroy accuracy marks in correct methods. And answer length mismatched to the mark tariff, which spends time the final question needed. One specialist can treat all four once across three subjects.

Which board do schools near Dubai South use for sciences?+

Both, and sometimes differently across subjects within one school, so there is no safe generalisation by neighbourhood. Cambridge sciences are 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry and 0625 Physics. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. The clearest practical difference is practical assessment: Cambridge sets Paper 6 as a separate paper, while Pearson integrates those skills across its papers. Check the code on the timetable, because it determines which past papers are usable from the first session.

Is there a February or March science exam series for UAE students?+

No. Cambridge's February and March series is offered to India only. UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Cambridge also allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative timetable zones, each with its own version, and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. Confirm the zone and the final timetable with the school rather than relying on any restated dates.

Why do ionic equations score nothing when they look nearly right?+

Because an equation that balances atoms but not charge is not valid, and the mark scheme treats it as wrong rather than as partially right. Students lose these marks under time pressure rather than through ignorance: the charge check takes a few seconds and gets skipped. The fix is building the check into the writing habit rather than leaving it as a final review that never happens, and that takes about one session to establish. The same discipline applies to half-equations in the redox work.

Does IB Gram send a science tutor to a Dubai South address?+

No. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only and no tutor is sent to any UAE address. Dubai South students are taught live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the marked script and official mark scheme on screen and diagrams, circuits and graphs drawn on a shared surface that is saved week to week. For the sciences that record is a real advantage, because a recurring graph or unit habit becomes visible rather than remembered differently by two people.

How many marks does circuit redrawing actually save in physics?+

Enough to matter on any paper with a series-parallel question. Examiners draw circuits that are deliberately awkward to read, and candidates who analyse the printed diagram as given will combine the wrong resistors and then carry that error through every subsequent part of the question. Redrawing in a standard layout before any calculation takes around ninety seconds and turns a hard question into a routine one. It is a habit rather than a skill, which means it can be established in two or three sessions.

What should a Year 10 science plan in Dubai South aim at?+

Two things. First, the shared technique faults: command terms, graph work, significant figures and answer length, because fixing them pays into every science simultaneously and the gains persist. Second, a timed Extended paper in any subject where the entry tier looks conservative, because that script is the evidence a subject lead can act on while the entry deadline is still ahead. By the spring of Year 11 the tiers are settled and the same hours buy less than they would have.

Is Combined Science harder to find a tutor for?+

Slightly, and it is worth knowing in advance. Fewer tutors have taught the combined paper structure, because most have worked with the separate sciences, and the past papers are not interchangeable. A separate-sciences specialist given a combined candidate will set questions on content that is not on the syllabus, which wastes sessions and shakes confidence. Where no suitable tutor is free we say so and give a date rather than making the substitution, which is the honest version of a limit most providers do not publish.

How much does IGCSE science tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Published bands split by provider model. Budget online platforms advertise from AED 33-52 on Tutopiya and AED 45-65 on EdFlik. Agencies with qualified subject tutors publish higher, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180-350 on Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table, and independent home tutors are quoted up to AED 500 once travel is in the hour. For a triple award family the useful calculation is not the hourly rate but whether the plan sequences subjects or runs three in parallel. These are market bands, not IB Gram prices.

What time can science sessions start in Dubai South on a school night?+

About 16:30 for most households, because school runs ending in Dubai Investments Park put families home between 16:00 and 16:30. Green Community families can manage 16:00 since the school is minutes away, while Dubai Production City households driving to Motor City or Sports City are closer to 17:30. Science immediately after a commute produces less than science at 18:00 after a break, so the slot worth booking is the one your child can concentrate in rather than the earliest one available.

Start with the codes, then start with Paper 6

An IGCSE science tutor in Dubai South is only useful once two things are known: which route your child is entered for and which board. Read the syllabus codes on the timetable, confirm the tier in each subject, and send any marked scripts you have, including a Paper 6 if one exists. The free trial lesson returns a written diagnosis separating the shared technique faults from genuine content gaps, with a sequenced plan rather than three parallel sessions. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are an India-only service.
