IB & IGCSE in Bur Dubai

Physics is a two-year calendar, and most families meet it in month twenty

Diploma physics is not one long course with an exam at the end. It is a sequence of deadlines, some set by the IB and some set by your child's school, and the grade is largely decided by whether those deadlines were met in a controlled way or in a scramble. Paper 1 and Paper 2 together carry 80 per cent of the final mark. The Scientific Investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent, is worth 24 marks across four criteria, and is completed and submitted months before the first paper is opened. By the time most Bur Dubai families start looking for a physics tutor, that 20 per cent has already been banked - well or badly.

This is why the first question we ask is not what topics your child finds difficult. It is which term they are in, and what has already been submitted. A DP1 student in their first term has the whole investigation ahead of them and can be helped with the part of the grade that is most within their control. A DP2 student eight weeks from the papers cannot change the investigation mark at all, and the useful work is entirely different: past papers, the data booklet, uncertainty handling, and the specific places in each theme where marks leak.

The calendar also has a local shape. Bur Dubai schools run mocks in the window between the submission of internal assessment work and the final papers, and a mock script is the single most useful document a physics family will see all year because it is usually a real past paper marked against the real scheme. Dubai's academic year carries other immovable features too - the KHDA-mandated subjects occupying timetable hours, and in some years a Ramadan period with a shortened school day falling inside the revision run-in. Planning tuition without those on the table produces a plan that collapses in week three.

Physics is also the Diploma subject in which the gap between knowing and scoring is widest. Students who can describe a phenomenon fluently lose marks for not quoting a value from the data booklet, for giving an answer to five significant figures when the data supports two, for omitting a unit, for failing to state an assumption, and for treating a six-mark question as a paragraph rather than as six separate marks. None of those are physics problems. All of them are repeatable, teachable habits, and they are what a well-spent hour actually addresses.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram is an online platform, and for every family in the UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are a service we run only in India. For physics this is a real advantage rather than a compromise. A shared screen holds the question, the student's own working, the data booklet and the mark scheme at the same time, annotated together and saved for later. And a Higher Level physics specialist who can read a script for method marks at speed is not necessarily living within a twenty-minute drive of Al Mankhool.

Four points on the physics path through a Bur Dubai school. What a tutor should be doing differs sharply between them, and the difference is the calendar rather than the content.

DP1Ages 16-17 · DP1

Diploma Programme year one

The year in which the themes are first taught and in which the Scientific Investigation is normally planned and often carried out. Mechanics and the early parts of Theme A dominate the first term, and students arriving from IGCSE or MYP meet the mathematical demand of physics for the first time. The most valuable tutoring in DP1 is mathematical rather than conceptual: rearranging, logarithms, gradients, and handling units through a calculation.

In Dubai schools, DP1 students are typically also settling into Theory of Knowledge, beginning the Extended Essay process and carrying the KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies lessons. Physics tuition in DP1 competes for hours with all of that, which is why a single well-placed weekly hour beats an intensive block.

DP2Ages 17-18 · DP2

Diploma Programme year two

The remaining themes, the internal deadlines for the investigation where it has not already been submitted, the mocks, and then the papers. The investigation mark is settled early in this year at most schools, after which the whole remaining grade sits in Paper 1 and Paper 2. Revision that is not built on marked past-paper evidence tends to recycle what the student already knows.

UAE candidates sit the May session, with November available as the alternative. We do not publish specific IB session or results dates on this page: the IB's own site blocks automated checking, so every date should be confirmed with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org directly rather than taken from any tutoring website.

HLDP1 and DP2 · 240 hours

Higher Level physics

The same five themes taken further, with additional Higher Level content inside each and a longer, harder Paper 1 and Paper 2. The additional material in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics is where Higher Level candidates most often lose ground, partly because it arrives late in DP2 when revision pressure is already high. Planning the final terms so that this content is not met for the first time in April is a genuine strategic decision.

Higher Level physics is a common requirement for engineering admission, and students in Dubai often take it alongside Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. That combination is demanding on time and worth timetabling honestly: two Higher Level quantitative subjects in the same week is the most common cause of a physics grade slipping for reasons unrelated to physics.

SLDP1 and DP2 · 150 hours

Standard Level physics

The core of all five themes without the Higher Level extensions, with shorter papers. Standard Level still carries the same Scientific Investigation worth 20 per cent and the same four criteria, which means the investigation is proportionally the same size of prize for a student with ninety fewer teaching hours. For many Standard Level candidates the investigation is the most efficient place to buy help.

Students moving into Standard Level physics from IGCSE Coordinated or Combined Science - common in the Bur Dubai school cluster - often arrive without having met the mathematical treatment physics requires. Two or three sessions on algebraic rearrangement and gradient interpretation at the start of DP1 saves a term of confusion later.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The five themes of the current physics guide, plus the skills that cut across all of them. Each entry says what the theme demands and the term in which it typically lands.

Theme A: Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces, work and energy, momentum, and at Higher Level rigid body mechanics and relativity. Taught first and therefore the content students are furthest from by the time they revise. Momentum and impulse questions are routinely answered with energy methods where energy is not conserved, which is a conceptual error rather than a computational one.

Theme B: The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal physics, the gas laws, the kinetic model, and current and circuits. The thermal section is where sign conventions and the difference between heat and temperature cost marks. Circuit questions reward a clear diagram and a stated assumption about internal resistance, and both are frequently omitted.

Theme C: Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Simple harmonic motion, wave model, wave phenomena, standing waves and the Doppler effect. Standing-wave questions require precise language about nodes, antinodes and boundary conditions, and loose description is penalised. Path-difference reasoning in interference is the discriminating skill at the top of the paper.

Theme D: Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, with motion in a field, induction and at Higher Level a unified treatment. The analogy between gravitational and electric fields is useful and also the source of the commonest sign error in the whole course. Induction questions need the direction argument stated, not assumed.

Theme E: Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, fission and fusion, the photoelectric effect and at Higher Level quantum phenomena. Usually taught last, which means it is the least rehearsed content in the final revision window. Mass-energy calculations fail on unit conversion more often than on physics.

Uncertainty and error

SL and HL, all papers

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and uncertainty bars on a graph with a worst-acceptable-line gradient. This appears in the data-based section of Paper 1 and inside the investigation, and it is the single most reliably under-taught part of the course. Two sessions move it permanently.

Graph work and linearisation

SL and HL

Choosing axes that linearise a relationship, extracting a physical quantity from a gradient or intercept, and judging whether a trend supports a proposed relationship. Students who can plot cannot always say what the gradient physically is, and that is the question examiners ask. Central to both the investigation and the data questions.

The data booklet

SL and HL, all papers

Not content, but a skill. Knowing where each constant and equation sits, and that a value should be quoted from the booklet rather than recalled approximately, is worth marks on every paper. Students who have not navigated the booklet under time pressure lose minutes they do not have in Paper 2.

Mathematical technique inside physics

SL and HL

Rearranging multi-variable equations, indices and standard form, logarithms where they appear, small-angle work and vector resolution. This is the content of most early DP1 physics difficulty, and it is often misdiagnosed as a physics problem. It is cheaper and faster to fix as mathematics.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL · 20 per cent

Four criteria - Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion, Evaluation - at 6 marks each for 24 in total. The research question and the method decide the ceiling on all four, which is why help before any data is collected is worth several times help afterwards. A tutor advises and questions; the student designs, collects, analyses and writes every word.

Command terms

SL and HL

State, outline, describe, explain, determine, deduce, discuss, evaluate - each with a defined expected response. A six-mark explain question wants six distinct creditable points, not a well-written paragraph. Explicit command-term work is among the cheapest mark gains available in the subject.

Exam stamina and question triage

DP2, final weeks

Choosing which question to attempt first, deciding when to leave a part and return, and writing enough to earn method marks on a question that will not be finished. These are trainable habits, practised only under full timed conditions, and they are what the final fortnight of a physics run-in should be spent on.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of physics support, chosen by the term rather than by preference. The right one depends almost entirely on what has already been submitted.

DP1 foundations and the investigation planned early

A weekly hour through the first Diploma year aimed at two things: the mathematical technique physics assumes, and a Scientific Investigation designed properly before any data is collected. Because the research question and method cap all four criteria, this is the cheapest point in two years at which to influence 20 per cent of the grade.

  • Algebra, logarithms, gradients and unit handling first
  • Research question interrogated before data collection begins
  • Uncertainty and graph work taught as a skill, not a topic
  • The student designs and writes everything; the tutor questions it

The DP2 revision run-in

A programme counted backwards from the papers, driven by marked past-paper evidence rather than by a topic checklist. The first session is diagnostic: a full paper under timed conditions, marked against the real scheme, producing a ranked list of where marks were lost. Only the top three or four areas get taught.

  • Diagnostic timed paper in the first week, marked hard
  • Data booklet navigation and uncertainty drilled weekly
  • A timed paper every fortnight thereafter, discussed in full
  • The final fortnight on technique and triage, with nothing new introduced

Single-topic repair

A short block of two to four sessions on one theme or one skill that is demonstrably costing marks - momentum, fields sign conventions, uncertainty propagation, standing waves. Appropriate when the rest of the course is sound and one area keeps failing, and far better value than a standing commitment nobody is measuring.

  • Starts from the student's own marked script
  • Two to four sessions, with an explicit end point
  • Checked against a past-paper question set on that area
  • No open-ended booking and no automatic renewal

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bur Dubai

01

The physics grade, component by component, and when each one closes

Three components make a Diploma physics grade. Paper 1 and Paper 2 together carry 80 per cent and are sat at the end of the course. The Scientific Investigation carries 20 per cent, is worth 24 marks over four criteria, and closes months earlier. Understanding that timing is the difference between buying tutoring that can still change something and buying tutoring that cannot.

Put the investigation first in any plan, because it is the only component where effort translates into marks on a predictable schedule. A DP1 student has the whole thing ahead of them. The four criteria are Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation, at 6 marks each. The research question and the method constrain all four - a question with a weak independent variable or too few data points limits the data analysis, which limits the conclusion, which limits the evaluation. An hour spent interrogating a research question before data collection is worth several hours spent polishing a write-up afterwards.

Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, and the data section is where the uncertainty and graph skills from the investigation pay a second dividend. Paper 2 is extended response, where command terms and mark allocation decide the outcome: a six-mark question wants six creditable points, and students who write one well-argued paragraph routinely score two. Higher Level candidates face longer papers with the additional Higher Level content inside each theme.

What that means practically for a Bur Dubai family is a sequencing rule. In DP1, buy investigation design and mathematical technique. Early in DP2, buy whatever the internal deadlines demand. In the final two terms, buy past-paper diagnosis and technique, and accept that the investigation mark is closed. Families who reverse this order - starting tutoring in the spring of DP2 and asking about the investigation - are asking about a component that has already been banked.

The two Diploma years, term by term, for a physics student

Physics families consistently underestimate how much of the grade is decided before the final revision period. Mapping the two years out term by term makes it obvious, and it also makes clear which term you are currently in and therefore what tuition can still achieve.

The first DP1 term is mechanics and mathematical settling-in. Students arriving from IGCSE Coordinated Science or from MYP meet algebraic physics for the first time, and the difficulty they report as physics is usually mathematics. This is the cheapest term in two years to buy help, because a fortnight of rearranging and unit work removes a problem that would otherwise tax every topic for twenty months. It is also the term in which investigation ideas should first be discussed, long before a school deadline makes it urgent.

The second and third terms add themes and, at most schools, bring the investigation to data collection and a first draft. The internal deadline for that draft is set by the school and not the IB, which parents frequently do not realise - which means it is a date you can ask about and plan around. A student who collects data in the second term has time to repeat a flawed set; a student who collects in the week before the deadline does not, and the Evaluation criterion suffers for it.

DP2 carries the remaining themes, the investigation submission, the mocks and the papers. The mock is the pivot. It is usually a real past paper, so the script is the best evidence a family will get, and the right response to a disappointing mock is a ranked list of mark losses rather than a general increase in revision. The final term should contain no new content at all for a student who is otherwise on track, and we will decline to introduce it: destabilising a nearly-ready candidate in the last fortnight is a known way to lose a grade.

Eight weeks out: what a physics run-in can and cannot do

  • Weeks 8-7: one full timed paper, marked hard, mark losses ranked by size
  • Weeks 6-3: mechanical faults first, then the one or two costliest themes
  • Week 4: a second timed paper to check the repair held
  • Weeks 2-1: timed papers, triage and command terms, with nothing new introduced

Eight weeks is the window most families actually present with, and it is enough to move a grade if it is spent on the right things. It is not enough to re-teach five themes, and a tutor who offers to is either padding the hours or has not thought about it. What eight weeks can do is convert knowledge the student already has into marks the mark scheme will award.

Weeks eight and seven are diagnostic. One full past paper under proper timed conditions, marked hard against the real scheme, and a second shorter data-based section. The output is a list of mark losses ranked by size, and in physics that list is almost always dominated by a small number of recurring mechanical faults rather than by topic ignorance: no unit, a value recalled instead of quoted from the data booklet, five significant figures from two-figure data, an assumption unstated, a six-mark question answered in three creditable points.

Weeks six to three are repair, taken in order of cost. The mechanical faults go first because they are cheap and they recur across every theme - one session on significant figures, units and data booklet navigation can pay back more than three sessions on fields. Then the one or two themes the diagnostic exposed, taught through past-paper questions rather than through notes, so the student meets the content in the form the examiner uses it. A second timed paper in week four checks whether the repair held.

Weeks two and one are technique and stamina only. Full papers, timed, marked, with attention to triage - which question to start, when to leave a part and return, how to write enough on an unfinished question to earn method marks. No new content. A student who meets Theme E for the first time in the final fortnight will not retain it and will lose confidence in the material they did know, and that is a worse trade than leaving the gap.

04

The Scientific Investigation against the clock, criterion by criterion

The investigation is 20 per cent of the physics grade, 24 marks, four criteria at 6 marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. It is also the component with the most generous timeline and the one most often left latest, which is a combination that reliably costs marks.

Research design is won before any apparatus is touched. It needs a research question with a variable that can genuinely be varied across a useful range, a dependent variable that can be measured with a known uncertainty, controlled variables identified and actually controlled, and a method detailed enough for someone else to repeat. The commonest failure is a question that is interesting but not measurable with the equipment available, and it is detectable in a fifteen-minute conversation months before it becomes a problem.

Data analysis and Conclusion depend on the data existing in sufficient quantity and quality - enough values across enough of the range, with repeats, and with uncertainties recorded as they were measured rather than estimated afterwards. A student who collected five points once cannot produce a convincing gradient with uncertainty bars, and no amount of writing fixes that. This is the mechanical reason early data collection matters: it leaves room to repeat a flawed set.

Evaluation is where the most marks are casually given away. It asks for a reasoned assessment of the method's limitations and realistic improvements, specific to what actually happened, and students write generic lists - more repeats, better equipment, human error. A limitation that names a particular source of systematic error in that experiment and explains its effect on the result scores; a generic list does not. On what a tutor may do here: we ask questions, give feedback on the student's own draft, and teach uncertainty and graph technique. We do not design the experiment, process the data or write any part of the report. That boundary protects the student, because an IB academic honesty breach falls on them.

CriterionMarksWhat it is actually asking forThe term in which it is really won
Research design6A measurable question, controlled variables, a repeatable methodBefore any data is collected

05

Ramadan, the shortened day and when a Bur Dubai physics session can really happen

  • KHDA-mandated subjects occupy real timetable hours alongside six Diploma subjects
  • Mandatory-subject time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, minimum advised 25 minutes
  • Agree in advance that the slot shifts during Ramadan rather than rescheduling weekly
  • Choose a session time against the worst realistic commute, not the best

A revision plan that ignores the UAE academic calendar fails in practice however good it looks on paper. Two features matter for Bur Dubai families. The first is the school day itself: Dubai private schools carry mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies alongside the licensed international curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and a minimum advised lesson length of 25 minutes. Those hours are real and they sit in a week that also has to carry six Diploma subjects, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

The second is Ramadan, which in some years falls inside the physics revision window. School days are shortened, routines change, and a family that has committed to a fixed 5pm session will find it does not work. The practical answer is to agree in advance that the slot moves for that period - often to a later post-Iftar time - rather than losing sessions to repeated rescheduling. Families who plan for it keep their hours; families who do not lose three or four weeks of a run-in.

Then there is the ordinary Bur Dubai afternoon. A Diploma student living in Bur Dubai or Karama is frequently at a school across the creek or out towards Al Garhoud, and the return journey at five o'clock is not predictable. A session time that works in October on a quiet day is not the same as one that survives February. Choose the slot against the worst realistic commute, not the best one, because in an eight-week run-in a session lost to traffic is more than a tenth of the plan.

This is also where the online format earns its keep in a way that has nothing to do with teaching quality. The hour does not depend on anyone travelling. A student who gets home at 5.40 instead of 5.10 joins late rather than missing the lesson. During exam season, when sleep and routine matter, a session that reliably happens at the same time each week is worth more than a nominally better tutor whose arrival time varies.

06

What Diploma physics tuition costs around Bur Dubai, and what the calendar does to the bill

The useful way to think about physics tuition cost is not per hour but per component. The investigation is 20 per cent of the grade and a well-timed six-session block in DP1 touches it. The papers are 80 per cent and an eight-week diagnosed run-in in DP2 touches those. Everything else is optional. Families who buy a standing weekly hour for two years without reference to the calendar spend several times more and do not reliably get a better grade.

With that framing, here is the market. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 an hour and above, with in-home one-to-one visits including travel at AED 180 to 350. Unitors publishes IB from AED 200 an hour and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase publishes AED 270. At the budget end, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, which buys homework supervision rather than Higher Level physics. BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. Independent home tutors are quoted up to AED 500. Monthly packages seen in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Which band is worth paying depends on the component. For DP1 mathematical technique, the mid band is sensible - this is competent teaching of straightforward material and prestige adds nothing. For investigation design and for past-paper diagnosis in DP2, the specialist band earns its premium, because reading a script for method marks and spotting a research question that will cap three criteria are judgement skills rather than knowledge. For technique practice in the final fortnight, almost nothing is worth a premium, because the work is the student's own.

All of these figures are market rates taken from each provider's own published prices as read in October 2026. None are IB Gram prices; we do not publish a rate card on a landing page. We hold no office or centre in the UAE, and we are not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, KHDA or any other authority. We also publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor count, because we cannot attach a sample size, a date and a method to any of them.

A physics tutor in a Bur Dubai flat against one-to-one online

Families here ask for a home tutor for reasons worth taking seriously. A tutor in the room is visible, a parent can judge whether the hour was used, and in a flat with younger children it is simpler than a journey. Those are legitimate arguments.

Our position stated before payment rather than after: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. Every lesson for a Bur Dubai family is one-to-one over live video. We put that on the page because two providers ranking for these searches route UAE parents to overseas phone numbers without disclosing where the tutor actually sits, and a family should not discover the delivery model after paying.

For physics specifically, the supply argument is decisive. A teacher who can read a Higher Level script for method marks at speed, who knows where a research question will cap the Evaluation criterion, and who has taught the current guide's Theme D treatment properly is a narrow specialism. The probability that such a person lives within a twenty-minute drive of Al Mankhool and is free at 5pm on a Tuesday is low. Insisting on proximity means accepting a generalist, and in physics the difference between a generalist and a specialist is visible in a single session.

The format itself also suits the subject. Physics work is diagrams, graphs, equations and worked solutions, and a shared screen holds the question, the student's own working, the data booklet and the mark scheme simultaneously, annotated in the tutor's hand and saved for the student to revisit before the next timed paper. Paper passed across a table cannot do that. The market data above shows what the in-home premium buys as well: in-home rates run AED 180 to 500, and the amount above the online band pays for a drive rather than for teaching.

Honesty, permits and the dates we will not publish

  • No IB session or results date is published here; confirm on ibo.org or with your coordinator
  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, valid two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No published fine schedule exists, so no figure should be quoted to you
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and no UAE premises

Three things on this page are deliberately absent, and the reasons matter. First, there is no specific IB examination or results date anywhere on it. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, which means no date we could publish would be verified, and a wrong date in a physics revision plan is a date a family acts on. Confirm every session and results date with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org directly. Any tutoring website quoting you an exact IB date should be asked where it came from.

Second, there is no IB Gram rate card and no claim of accreditation. We are not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry; we do not hold one and do not describe ourselves as KHDA approved. We hold no office, centre or branch in the UAE.

Third, there is no statistic without its source. Every AED figure names the provider that published it and the month it was read. We publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor headcount, because we cannot attach a sample size, a date and a method to any of them. Two competitors in this market publish self-asserted star ratings in their structured data that differ from the figure on the visible page, which is a structured-data policy violation as well as a trust problem.

On permits, the position is checkable. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and states a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, no amount should be quoted to you. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct does likewise.

Where we tutor

Bur Dubai and the surrounding districts

Bur Dubai sits on the south bank of the creek in the oldest and densest part of the city. The syllabus does not change between these neighbourhoods; the hour at which a physics session can realistically start does.

Bur Dubai

Apartment living with short school runs and a heavy early-evening street. Diploma students here are commonly commuting out of the district to an IB school, which makes a fixed hour more valuable than a nearby tutor.

Al Mankhool

Immediately west, with its own school cluster and often a walk or a five-minute drive. The 4pm slot is genuinely available to households here, which is unusual in old Dubai and worth claiming in the first week of term.

Karama

Dense flats a few minutes inland. One shared laptop and a study table in a living room is the normal condition, so session timing has to be negotiated around the household rather than around the tutor.

Oud Metha

Inside the school belt, with several large schools within walking distance. The shortest commutes in this set, which makes the earliest evening slots usable - the one real scheduling advantage this part of Dubai has.

Al Garhoud

Across the creek by the airport, and the closest concentration of IB provision to Bur Dubai. Most Diploma physics students in this cluster are at a school here or make the crossing daily.

Deira

The north bank. A five o'clock creek crossing is unpredictable in either direction, which is why a fixed online hour outperforms a travel-dependent arrangement during a revision run-in.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A large British and Indian curriculum belt stretching towards Sharjah. Diploma physics students from here commute furthest, and useful session times are generally after six.

Al Jaffiliya and Satwa

Between Bur Dubai and Jumeirah with short runs to both school clusters. Households here frequently have children on two different curricula, which makes the weekly timetable the binding constraint.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Bur Dubai

Bur Dubai, Al Mankhool and Oud Metha

Predominantly British and Indian curriculum, which means most Diploma physics students from these streets travel to an IB school elsewhere in the city. That daily commute is the practical reason a fixed online hour holds better than a tutor who also has to travel.

  • The Indian High School, Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Al Garhoud, Deira and Al Mamzar

The nearest IB provision to Bur Dubai and the cluster most Diploma physics students in this part of the city actually attend. Shorter school runs than the Al Qusais belt, and the only group for whom a 4.30pm physics session is routinely realistic.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Indian Academy, Dubai

Schools are named only as context for the local education market. IB Gram has no affiliation with, partnership with, or endorsement from any school listed here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the term, not the topic

The first question is which Diploma term your child is in and what has already been submitted. A DP1 student and a DP2 student eight weeks from the papers need completely different work, and the investigation mark is either still open or it is closed. That single answer shapes everything else.

  2. 02

A free trial, built around real evidence

One session at no cost with the tutor you would continue with, spent on a past-paper question or on the student's own investigation draft. You get a written note of what was found - the mark losses, or the research-question risk - whether or not you book anything further.

  3. 03

Rank the mark losses before teaching anything

In DP2 we start with a timed paper marked hard against the real scheme, and we teach in order of marks lost. In physics the top of that list is usually mechanical - units, significant figures, data booklet values, unstated assumptions - rather than a theme the student does not know.

  4. 04

Fix the hour against the real commute

Choose a slot that survives February traffic rather than October traffic, and agree in advance that it shifts during Ramadan. Oud Metha and Al Mankhool households can often hold a 4.30pm start; Karama, Deira-side and Al Nahda families are usually better after six. The hour is in Gulf Standard Time.

  5. 05

    Measure with timed papers

Every two to three weeks, a full paper under proper conditions, marked hard. That is the only honest measure. We report the mark and the error pattern, and if the pattern is not changing we change the tutor or the method rather than selling more hours.

  6. 06

    Stop at the right point

The final fortnight is the student's own technique practice, and we will say so instead of booking sessions nobody is measuring. We also decline to introduce new content in the last two weeks, because destabilising a nearly-ready candidate is a known way to lose a grade.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We plan from the calendar, not from a topic list

Which term your child is in determines whether 20 per cent of the grade is still in play. A tutor who starts with a syllabus checklist rather than with what has already been submitted is working on the wrong component, and in DP2 that is an expensive mistake.

The investigation taken seriously, early

Twenty per cent of the physics grade sits in 24 marks across four criteria, and the research question caps all four. We interrogate the question before any data exists, which is the cheapest high-value hour available in the whole two years.

Mechanical marks before content

Units, significant figures, data booklet values, stated assumptions and one creditable point per mark recur across every theme. Fixing them is cheap and compounds, and it is routinely skipped in favour of re-teaching a topic the student already half-knows.

A hard boundary on assessed work

We teach, question and give feedback on the student's own investigation. We do not design the experiment, process the data or write any part of the report. That boundary is written down because the consequence of crossing it under IB academic honesty rules falls on the student, not on us.

No dates we cannot verify

There is no IB examination or results date on this page. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so we cite no date we have not been able to confirm, and we tell you to get it from your coordinator. A wrong date in a revision plan is worse than no date.

Clear about where the tutor sits

Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, stated before payment. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE. The real argument is supply: a Higher Level physics specialist free at 5pm who also lives near Al Mankhool is an unlikely combination.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bur Dubai: your questions answered

How much of the IB physics grade is decided before the exams?+

Twenty per cent. The Scientific Investigation is worth 24 marks across four criteria and is submitted at a school deadline months before Paper 1 and Paper 2, which together carry the other 80 per cent. That is why the first question we ask is which term your child is in. A DP1 student still has that whole component in front of them. A DP2 student in the spring cannot change it at all, and tutoring hours spent discussing it at that stage are spent on something already banked.

When in the two Diploma years should physics tutoring start?+

It depends on which component you want to move. For the investigation, DP1 - specifically before any data is collected, because the research question caps all four criteria. For mathematical technique, the first DP1 term, since most early physics difficulty is algebra rather than physics and a fortnight of work there removes a problem that taxes twenty months. For the papers, an eight to twelve week diagnosed run-in in DP2 is enough and is what most families actually need. A standing two-year hour costs several times more without reliably delivering more.

What are the five themes in the current IB physics guide?+

Theme A is space, time and motion - kinematics, forces, energy and momentum. Theme B is the particulate nature of matter, covering thermal physics, the gas laws and electric circuits. Theme C is wave behaviour, including simple harmonic motion, standing waves and the Doppler effect. Theme D is fields, taking gravitational, electric and magnetic fields together. Theme E is nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level adds further content inside each theme, and Themes D and E usually arrive latest, which is why they are the least rehearsed in revision.

Why does my child understand physics but lose marks on the papers?+

Because the mark scheme rewards specific behaviours rather than understanding. The recurring losses are: no unit on an answer, a constant recalled approximately instead of quoted from the data booklet, five significant figures produced from two-figure data, an assumption left unstated, and a six-mark question answered as one well-written paragraph when it wants six distinct creditable points. None of these are content problems. A full paper marked hard against the real scheme usually shows which of them is costing the grade within a single session.

What is the physics investigation marked out of, and on what?+

Twenty-four, across four criteria at six marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. That total represents 20 per cent of the final physics grade at both Standard and Higher Level. Research design is decided before any apparatus is touched, Data analysis depends on the quantity and quality of data actually collected, Conclusion can only be as good as that analysis, and Evaluation is written from notes kept during collection. The sequence is why early work on it is worth several times late work.

Where exactly must a tutor stop on the physics investigation?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can interrogate a research question, ask whether a variable can actually be varied and measured enough times, teach uncertainty propagation and graph technique, and give feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor cannot design the experiment, collect or process the data, or write any part of the report. Crossing that line is an academic honesty breach under IB rules, and the consequence lands on the student rather than on the tutor. We put the boundary in writing before any investigation work starts.

What is the difference between Higher and Standard Level physics in practice?+

Higher Level is 240 teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, with additional content inside each of the five themes and longer, harder papers. The Scientific Investigation is the same four criteria and the same 20 per cent at both levels, which means it is proportionally the same prize for a Standard Level student with ninety fewer hours - often making it the most efficient place for a Standard Level candidate to buy help. The Higher Level extensions in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics are the usual ground where Higher candidates lose marks.

How many physics sessions does an eight-week run-in usually need?+

Typically eight to twelve, roughly one or two a week, with full timed papers built in rather than added at the end. Weeks eight and seven go on diagnosis. Weeks six to three repair the mechanical faults first and then the one or two costliest themes. Week four carries a second timed paper to check the repair held. The last fortnight is technique and stamina with nothing new introduced. Buying thirty sessions for an eight-week window buys fatigue rather than marks, and we will say so.

What does IB physics tutoring cost in Dubai, and when is the premium worth it?+

Market rates read in October 2026: Bestimate's Dubai table puts IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 an hour and above, Unitors publishes IB from AED 200, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent tutors. Those are the market, not our prices. The premium is worth paying for investigation design and script diagnosis, which are judgement skills, and not for final-fortnight technique practice, which is the student's own work.

Do you send a physics tutor to our flat in Bur Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. Every lesson for a Bur Dubai family is one-to-one over live video, stated before payment rather than after. For physics the format suits the subject: a shared screen holds the question, the student's own working, the data booklet and the mark scheme at once, annotated live and saved. The stronger argument is supply - a Higher Level physics specialist free at 5pm who also lives near Al Mankhool is an unlikely combination.

Why is uncertainty work so important in IB physics?+

Because it is assessed twice. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and uncertainty bars with a worst-acceptable-line gradient appear in the data-based section of Paper 1 and sit at the heart of the investigation's Data analysis criterion. It is also the most reliably under-taught part of the course, partly because it is taught early and rarely revisited. Two dedicated sessions typically move it permanently, and the return shows up in two separate components rather than one.

Should my child take Higher Level physics and Higher Level maths together?+

It is a common combination for engineering applicants and it is demanding on time rather than on ability. Two Higher Level quantitative subjects in the same week is the most frequent reason a physics grade slips for reasons unrelated to physics: both carry heavy problem sets, both have internal assessment deadlines, and in a Dubai timetable they sit alongside mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies lessons as well as TOK and the Extended Essay. If the combination is needed for admissions, plan the two years rather than discovering the load in DP2.

What should we ask for after the physics mock besides the grade?+

The script, and the mark scheme if the department will release it. Mocks usually use a real past paper, so the losses on that script are the losses likely to recur. A grade tells you where the student stands; the script tells you why, and lets a first tutoring session produce a ranked list of mark losses rather than spending an hour establishing what the department already knew. Ask also which themes had not yet been taught at the time of the mock, so a low mark is not misread as a gap.

How should a physics revision plan handle Ramadan in Dubai?+

By agreeing in advance that the session time moves for that period rather than rescheduling week by week. School days are shortened and household routines change, so a fixed 5pm slot that worked in January often will not hold, and families who try to keep it tend to lose three or four weeks of a run-in. A later post-Iftar slot, agreed before the period starts, protects the hours. Dubai timetables also carry the KHDA-mandated subjects throughout, which is part of why Diploma weeks are tighter than families expect.

Why are there no IB session dates anywhere on this page?+

Because we have not been able to verify them from the IB directly. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so any session or results date we published would be unconfirmed, and a wrong date in a physics revision plan is a date a family acts on. UAE candidates sit the May session, with November as the alternative sitting, and that much is safe to state. For the actual dates, ask your school's IB coordinator or check ibo.org. Any tutoring site quoting you an exact IB date should be asked for its source.

Is it worth starting physics tutoring with only three weeks left?+

Sometimes, with a narrow brief. Three weeks will not repair a theme and should not try. What it can do is drill the mechanical mark-losers - units, significant figures, data booklet navigation, stating assumptions, writing one creditable point per mark - and run two or three full timed papers to build stamina and question triage. That is a real grade effect for a student who knows the content and is leaking marks. If the content genuinely is not there, we will tell you so rather than sell the hours.

Start with the term your child is in

Everything in a physics plan follows from one answer: which Diploma term is this, and what has already been submitted? If the investigation is still ahead, that is 20 per cent of the grade and the cheapest place to buy help. If the papers are eight weeks away, the work is diagnosis and technique and nothing else. Book the free trial lesson and we will tell you which of those you are in. One hour, no cost, with the tutor you would continue with, spent on a real past-paper question or on the student's own investigation draft, with a written note of what was found.
