IB MYP Tutor in Bur Dubai

An IB MYP tutor in Bur Dubai is most useful before an assessment task, not after it. The MYP year runs on unit windows and reporting periods that schools publish and parents rarely read, and a block of tuition that lands two weeks before a criterion is assessed is worth several times the same block afterwards. We teach one-to-one over live video, timed to the school's own calendar.

  • Work timed to the school's unit and assessment windows
  • Personal Project planned from MYP 5 term one, not term three

IB & IGCSE in Bur Dubai

The MYP runs on a calendar, and the calendar is published

Middle Years Programme tutoring in Dubai is bought, almost universally, at the wrong moment. A task comes home with a disappointing criterion score, the family reacts, and a tutor is engaged to repair something that has already been graded. The repair is not worthless - criterion judgements accumulate over a reporting period and a later, stronger piece of evidence carries weight - but it is a fraction as effective as the same hours spent two weeks earlier, before the task was set.

What makes that avoidable is that the calendar is not secret. MYP schools build units against the programme framework and publish, in some form, which units run when and which criteria each unit assesses. Not every criterion is assessed in every unit: a Sciences unit might assess Criterion A and Criterion C only, with B and D coming in the next one. That means a parent who asks for the assessment map knows in September which letters are being judged in which term, across all eight subject groups, and can time any paid help to arrive before the judgement rather than after it.

The second calendar feature families in Bur Dubai miss is the long run-up to the Personal Project. In MYP 5 the Personal Project is assessed on three criteria - Planning, Applying skills and Reflecting - worth 24 marks between them, and most of those marks live in a process journal kept over months. A project supported from the first term of MYP 5 costs a handful of sessions and runs calmly. The same project supported three weeks before the deadline costs more, delivers less, and pushes everyone towards a line that must not be crossed.

The third is the handover into the Diploma, which has a window nobody uses. The weeks between the end of MYP 5 and the start of DP1 are the single cheapest opportunity in five years to close the three gaps that actually cause trouble - examination stamina, algebraic fluency and command terms - and almost every family discovers those gaps halfway through the first DP1 report cycle instead. That is a scheduling failure rather than an academic one.

On how we work: IB Gram is an online platform and for every family in the UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are a service we run only in India. For MYP work that suits the subject, because almost everything assessed is a document. The task sheet, the task-specific clarification and the student's own draft sit side by side on a shared screen, annotated together and saved, which is more useful than paper read across a Bur Dubai dining table and taken away afterwards.

At a glance

  • Not every criterion is assessed in every unit - ask for the assessment map
  • A block of tuition before a task is worth several times the same block after it
  • The Personal Project is 24 marks across three criteria, most of them journal-based
  • The MYP 5 to DP1 gap is best closed in the summer window, not in DP1 term two
  • eAssessment is a school-level choice that reshapes the final MYP year
  • All UAE lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four points on the MYP path through a Bur Dubai school. What a tutoring hour should be doing differs at each, and the difference is almost entirely about when in the year it falls.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · MYP 1 to 3

The early Middle Years

Eight subject groups running in parallel, each assessed against four criteria on a 0 to 8 band. The characteristic difficulty is not content but organisation: a student holding eight sets of unit requirements, five Approaches to Learning skill categories and a service record at once. Tutoring here is most useful as targeted work before a known assessment window rather than as a standing weekly commitment.

In a Dubai school these three years also carry mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies alongside the eight subject groups, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. A student who looks weak across several criteria is quite often weak on load management rather than on any subject.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · MYP 4 and 5

The upper Middle Years

The two years where the criterion descriptors tighten noticeably and where the Personal Project arrives. Subject choices narrow in some schools, interdisciplinary units continue, and reporting starts to be read by families as a predictor of Diploma readiness. The calendar here is dense and the Personal Project timeline is the single most plannable thing in it.

Several Dubai schools run MYP 4 and 5 as the route into DP1 without IGCSE. That route is legitimate and means the student will never have sat a two-hour externally marked paper before DP1 mocks, which is a known, fixable gap if it is addressed in the handover window.

PPMYP 5

The Personal Project

Three criteria - Planning, Applying skills, Reflecting - at 8 marks each for a total of 24. The process journal is the evidence base for Planning and Reflecting, which means two-thirds of the marks sit in a document most students treat as an afterthought. The product itself feeds mainly one criterion. Starting in term one rather than term three is the whole game.

Dubai Personal Project seasons collide with a dense social calendar and, in some years, with Ramadan and a shortened school day. Families who front-load the planning and journal habit in the first term keep the spring calm; those who leave it find the deadline landing in the worst possible weeks.

DP1Ages 16-17 · DP1

The handover into the Diploma

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The three gaps that bite coming from MYP 5 are examination stamina, algebraic fluency and command terms, and none of them are visible on an MYP report. All three are closeable in the weeks between the two programmes, which is the cheapest tutoring window in the whole five years.

Dubai IB schools generally run DP1 mocks in the first year, and for an MYP 5 graduate that is often the first timed paper of their life. Preparing for that mechanically - starting at thirty minutes and building - is far more useful than revising content they already know.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight subject groups plus the components that sit outside them, each with the point in the year at which help is actually worth buying.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Four criteria: Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, Reflecting on the impacts of science. The investigation criteria are assessed in specific units rather than continuously, so the useful fortnight is the one before the investigation unit begins - once the method has been submitted, the design marks are settled.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The investigation task that carries Criterion B usually lands once or twice a year and is flagged in advance. A student who has never written a general rule with justification before that task will not learn to during it.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing, Organizing, Producing text, Using language. Assessment is spread across the year in different text types, which means the criterion weaknesses recur rather than resolve. Work on analysis of writer's choices, as opposed to plot summary, transfers to every subsequent task in the year.

Language acquisition

Phases 1 to 6

Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing - four skills marked separately. Phase placement is reviewed at particular points in a school's year, which makes the review a date to plan around rather than a decision to accept passively. Ask when your school next reviews placement.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, Investigating, Communicating, Thinking critically. The research task carrying Criterion B and the source-evaluation work carrying Criterion D usually sit in the same unit, so one well-timed block before that unit affects half the subject's marks for the year.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, Developing ideas, Creating the solution, Evaluating. Design runs on the design cycle and the documentation is where the marks are, which means the moment to intervene is at the brief and specification stage - before the student has built anything that the specification then has to be retrofitted to.

Arts

Visual arts, music, drama · MYP 1-5

Investigating, Developing, Creating or performing, Evaluating. Three of four criteria are evidenced through the process journal, which accrues over the whole unit. A journal habit established in week one of a unit cannot be reconstructed in the last week, and reconstruction is visible to a marker.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, Planning for performance, Applying and performing, Reflecting and improving performance. Three of the four are written: physiology knowledge, a training plan with measurable goals, and reflection against those goals. The plan has to exist before the performance block for the reflection to have anything to measure.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed on its own criteria - Evaluating, Synthesising, Reflecting - and reported separately. These units are scheduled in advance and often ambush students because the task asks for synthesis of two disciplines rather than two parallel essays. Knowing the unit is coming is most of the preparation.

Service as action

MYP 1-5

Required, recorded and reported rather than criterion-graded, with documented reflection against learning outcomes expected across all five years. A student who has recorded nothing until MYP 5 has a reconstruction problem. Ten minutes a term is the whole task, and almost nobody does it on time.

Approaches to learning

All MYP years

Five skill categories - communication, social, self-management, research and thinking - taught through subject units. Self-management and research are the two that show up as criterion losses in other subjects. A student who cannot cite a source loses Individuals and societies marks for a reason nobody has named for them.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Planning, Applying skills, Reflecting - 24 marks, two-thirds of them journal and report. The timeline is long and entirely visible from term one. A tutor coaches goal-setting, testable success criteria, journal habit and question-led reflection, and produces no part of the submitted work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of MYP support, each defined by where it sits in the year rather than by what it teaches.

Pre-task blocks timed to the assessment map

Short blocks of two or three sessions placed deliberately before a unit in which a specific criterion will be assessed. The tutor works from the unit planner and the task-specific clarification rather than from a textbook, so the preparation matches the judgement about to be made. This is the shape we recommend most and the one families least often ask for.

  • Built from the school's own assessment map and unit planner
  • Two or three sessions, landing before the task is set
  • Aimed at a named criterion rather than at a topic
  • Checked against the criterion score the task returns

Personal Project process support from term one

A thin, long engagement across MYP 5: narrowing a goal until it is achievable, writing success criteria that can be tested rather than admired, establishing a ten-minute-a-week journal habit, and planning the report. The student does the project and writes every submitted word. The tutor asks questions and gives feedback.

  • Goal and testable success criteria agreed in the first sessions
  • Journal reviewed against the Planning and Reflecting descriptors
  • Report planned by the student and interrogated by the tutor
  • A written boundary on what a tutor will not do

The MYP 5 to DP1 handover

A concentrated block in the weeks between the two programmes, aimed at the three gaps MYP reporting cannot show: examination stamina, algebraic fluency and command terms. It is the cheapest high-value window in five years and almost nobody uses it, because nothing has gone wrong yet.

  • Timed writing built up from thirty minutes
  • Algebraic drill aimed at Diploma Mathematics expectations
  • Two sessions purely on Diploma command terms
  • Finishes before DP1 starts, with an explicit end point

01

The MYP year has a published shape - ask for the assessment map

The most useful document in Middle Years Programme tutoring is not a textbook. It is the school's assessment map: which units run in which term, and which of the four criteria each unit assesses, across all eight subject groups. Schools build this to plan teaching, and in most cases a parent can simply ask for it. Almost nobody does, which is why so much MYP tuition in Dubai is bought reactively.

The reason it matters is structural. Not every criterion is assessed in every unit. A Sciences unit may judge Criterion A and Criterion C and leave B and D for the next one. So a criterion that appears absent from a report is frequently just not yet assessed that period, and a family reading a report as a complete picture is reading an incomplete one. Conversely, a criterion that is about to be assessed is a known, dated target, and preparation can be aimed at it specifically.

That turns tutoring from a reaction into a plan. If Individuals and societies will assess Criterion D - Thinking critically, which rewards evaluating sources for origin, purpose, value and limitation - in a unit starting in six weeks, then a two-session block in week four is worth several times the same two sessions after the task comes back. The student arrives at the task already knowing what the descriptor rewards rather than discovering it from a mark.

A second practical use of the map is load. Eight subject groups each running units with assessment points produces weeks in which four criterion-marked tasks are due together, and those weeks are visible in advance. A family looking at the map in September can see the crunch weeks, and a student struggling in a crunch week is not necessarily struggling with any subject. We would rather tell a family to look at the calendar than sell them hours against a problem the calendar created.

The Personal Project counted backwards from the deadline

The Personal Project is the most plannable piece of work in the Middle Years Programme and the one most often left latest. It is assessed on Planning, Applying skills and Reflecting - three criteria at 8 marks each, 24 in total - and the process journal is the evidence for two of those three. That is the fact that should change behaviour: the thing a student makes feeds mainly one criterion, and sixteen of the twenty-four marks live in a record kept over months.

Counted backwards, the timeline is generous. A final deadline in the second half of MYP 5 implies a report written in the weeks before it, a product substantially finished before that, data or evidence of the making gathered throughout, success criteria agreed near the start, and a goal narrowed in the first term. Every one of those steps has months of slack if the first step happens on time. None of them do if the first step happens in the final term.

The characteristic Dubai failure has a specific shape. A student picks an ambitious goal - a short film, an app, a community event - works hard on it through the spring, and arrives at the report with nothing to evidence Planning or Reflecting because no journal exists. A reconstructed journal is visible to a marker and scores poorly. The opposite case is also instructive: a modest product with a rigorous journal and honest, specific reflection scores far better than parents expect, and students find that counter-intuitive until somebody explains the mark allocation to them.

On the boundary, clearly, because the Personal Project is where pressure concentrates. A tutor can help narrow a goal until it is achievable, help write success criteria that can actually be tested, set up a journal habit that takes ten minutes a week, and ask the questions that produce reflection rather than description. A tutor does not choose the project, make any part of the product, write or edit any part of the report, or supply material to be submitted. Crossing that line is an academic honesty breach under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student.

Interdisciplinary units, and why they ambush good students

  • Interdisciplinary units are assessed on Evaluating, Synthesising and Reflecting
  • Two parallel pieces of work is the commonest and most invisible failure
  • Before writing, state what the second discipline lets you say that the first could not
  • Reflecting wants what the combination made possible, not a narrative of the process

Interdisciplinary units are scheduled, assessed on their own criteria - Evaluating, Synthesising and Reflecting - and reported separately from the eight subject groups. They are also the single most reliable source of an unexpectedly low grade for a student who is doing well everywhere else, and the reason is structural rather than academic.

The task asks a student to combine two disciplines to produce something neither could produce alone. What most students produce instead is two parallel pieces of work stapled together: a science section and a history section, each competent, with a sentence in between. That is not synthesis, and the Synthesising criterion marks it as what it is. The failure is invisible to the student, who has worked hard and written a lot, and often invisible to the parent too until a separate interdisciplinary grade appears on a report nobody was expecting.

Knowing the unit is coming is most of the preparation, which is why it belongs in a section about the calendar. A student who is told in advance that the task will be marked on whether the two disciplines genuinely inform each other will plan differently from the outset. The practical exercise is short: before writing anything, state in one sentence what the second discipline lets you say that the first could not. If that sentence does not exist, the plan is two essays and needs rethinking.

The Reflecting criterion in these units has its own trap, shared with much of the MYP. It asks what the student learned about combining disciplines, not what the student did. Students write process narratives - first we researched, then we wrote - where the descriptor wants an account of what the combination made possible and what its limits were. That distinction takes one session to teach and recurs in the Personal Project, in the Arts journals and in Sciences Criterion D.

04

Service as action and the five-year record nobody keeps

  • Service as action is required and reported across all five MYP years
  • A short entry per activity, written at the time, is the whole task
  • Reflection on learning rather than a list of activity is what is expected
  • One calendar reminder a term removes an MYP 5 reconstruction crisis

Service as action is not graded on criteria, which is exactly why it gets ignored, and it is required, recorded and reported across all five MYP years. Schools expect documented reflection against learning outcomes. A student who has recorded nothing by MYP 5 faces a reconstruction task at the worst possible moment, competing with the Personal Project for the same weeks.

The work itself is trivial in volume. A short entry per activity naming what was done, what was learned and which outcome it addresses, written at the time, takes a few minutes. Done once a term across five years it produces a complete record with no effort worth mentioning. Left until the end, it produces either a thin record or an invented one, and an invented one is both obvious and dishonest.

Where tutoring has a legitimate and narrow role is in helping a student articulate learning rather than activity. Students write lists of what they did; the expectation is reflection on what changed in them and what the experience showed about the issue. That is a writing skill, it is the same skill the Personal Project's Reflecting criterion rewards, and it is the same skill Sciences Criterion D rewards. Teaching it once pays in three places, which is the most efficient thing available in MYP tutoring.

A practical suggestion for Bur Dubai families, because the calendar is the theme of this page: put one calendar reminder a term, in the same week as the school's reporting date, to write the service entries. It costs nothing, it removes a reconstruction crisis from MYP 5, and it is the sort of intervention that makes tutoring unnecessary rather than necessary. We would rather say that than sell hours against a problem a reminder would have prevented.

05

eAssessment, and the fork in the final MYP year

  • eAssessment is a school-level choice, not a programme requirement
  • Where used, the MYP Certificate grade comes from IB-marked examinations and ePortfolios
  • Where not, the record stays school-assessed against the criteria
  • Ask the MYP coordinator before the final year starts, not during it

There is a question every MYP 5 parent should ask and most never do: does this school run IB eAssessment? The answer changes the whole shape of the final year, and it is a school-level choice rather than a programme requirement, so two schools five minutes apart in Bur Dubai can be doing different things.

Where a school opts in, the final MYP Certificate grade comes from on-screen examinations and ePortfolios marked by the IB rather than from the school's own criterion judgements. That means the final year contains externally assessed components with their own registration and submission dates, and the student needs preparation for a timed on-screen examination environment they may never have met. It is, in that respect, a rehearsal for the Diploma, which is one of its genuine advantages.

Where a school does not opt in, the MYP record remains school-assessed against the criteria throughout, and the final year looks much like the preceding ones with the Personal Project added. Neither route is better, and no family needs to choose because the school already has. What families need is to know which one applies, because the preparation, the deadlines and the timing of any tuition differ substantially between them.

This is a one-question conversation with the MYP coordinator and it should happen before the final year begins rather than during it. If the answer is eAssessment, plan for timed on-screen practice and for the portfolio deadlines. If it is school-assessed, the assessment map remains the planning document and the Personal Project timeline is the main fixed structure in the year. Either way the conversation costs nothing and prevents the most common form of MYP 5 surprise.

06

The weeks between MYP 5 and DP1: the window nobody uses

Here is the calendar observation that saves families the most money over five years, and it concerns a period in which nothing has gone wrong. The gap between the end of MYP 5 and the start of DP1 is the cheapest, highest-return tutoring window in the programme, and it is almost entirely unused because there is no bad report to react to.

Three gaps reliably cause trouble in the first Diploma year, and none of them appear on an MYP report. Examination stamina: MYP assessment is coursework-shaped, with tasks, investigations and projects, and the Diploma ends in timed papers. A student who has never written for ninety minutes without a break finds the first DP1 mock brutal regardless of what they know. The fix is mechanical - start at thirty minutes and build - and it does not require any content teaching at all.

Algebraic fluency: MYP Mathematics is assessed on criteria that reward investigation and real-world application, while Diploma Mathematics rewards accurate manipulation and correct calculator use under time pressure. A student with strong Criterion B investigation marks and shaky algebra has a gap that MYP reporting cannot show and DP1 exposes within a term. Students moving from standard MYP Mathematics into Higher Level Analysis and Approaches have the widest version of this gap.

Command terms: the Diploma publishes a defined list per subject - state, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss - each with a specific expected response and a specific mark allocation. MYP students are fluent in criterion descriptors, which are related but not the same vocabulary. Two sessions on command terms before DP1 begins pays back across all six subjects rather than one, which makes it the single best-value pair of hours in the handover. A block of six to ten sessions in this window typically covers all three gaps, and it ends on a fixed date.

What MYP support costs in Dubai, timed to the calendar

Because MYP help is most effective in short, well-placed blocks, the cost question is better answered per block than per month. A pre-task block is two or three sessions. Personal Project process support across MYP 5 is four to six spread thinly. The DP1 handover is six to ten in a fixed window. Added up over five years, a family that times its purchases well spends a fraction of what a standing weekly hour would cost and gets more for it.

The market rates, each attributed and read in October 2026: at the budget end Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, which buys homework supervision. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table places IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above; TutorChase publishes AED 270; BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work, with packages advertised around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Applying that to the MYP: a three-session pre-task block at the mid band is a small, bounded purchase with a measurable outcome - the next criterion score. The specialist band is worth it for Personal Project process coaching and for the DP1 handover, because both involve judgement about what a descriptor rewards rather than content delivery. Nothing in the market justifies a premium for homework supervision, which is what the budget band actually sells.

None of the figures above are IB Gram prices; we publish no rate card on a landing page. We hold no office, centre or branch in the UAE. We are not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education, and we publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor headcount, because none of those could be given a sample size, a date and a method.

An MYP tutor in a Bur Dubai flat against one-to-one online

The in-home instinct here is understandable. A tutor in the room is visible, a parent can judge whether the hour was used, and in an apartment with younger children it removes a journey. Those are fair arguments and we are not dismissing them.

The position, stated before payment: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. Every lesson for a family in Bur Dubai, Karama or Al Mankhool is one-to-one over live video. We put that on the page because two providers ranking for these searches route UAE parents to overseas phone numbers without disclosing where the tutor actually sits.

For MYP work the format is unusually well matched to the task, because nearly everything assessed is a document. A unit planner, a task sheet, a task-specific clarification and the student's own draft can all be open on one shared screen, annotated in the tutor's hand against each descriptor, and saved for the student to use when the next task in that subject group arrives. Paper across a table cannot do any of that, and it leaves with the tutor.

The supply argument is the decisive one in this district, though, and it is specifically a calendar argument. A pre-task block has to land in a particular fortnight, not whenever a nearby tutor happens to be free. The pool of people who understand what Design Criterion A rewards, or how a Personal Project journal evidences Reflecting, is small; the subset of that pool living within a twenty-minute drive of Al Mankhool and free in the right fortnight is smaller still. Online removes the geography from the problem and leaves only the timing, which is the thing that actually matters.

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. In 2024-25 the sector was 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula, with UK curriculum at 37 per cent of pupils, Indian at 26 per cent and US at 14 per cent. The International Baccalaureate accounts for a small share of enrolment, which is the plain reason MYP specialists are thin on the ground in a district like Bur Dubai.

The timetable facts matter directly to a calendar-led plan. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for, under KHDA requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. Schools must ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects. For the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, which constrains how tutoring in them can be described.

Put those hours next to eight MYP subject groups, interdisciplinary units, service as action and, in MYP 5, the Personal Project, and the week is tight. A student whose criterion scores dip in a particular term may be in a crunch week visible on the assessment map rather than struggling with a subject. That is a reason to look at the calendar before buying hours, and we would rather point a family at the calendar than at a booking page.

KHDA also confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools - four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate - creating 16,846 new places. Useful context for a family weighing school fees against tutoring spend in this district.

Permits, claims and the lines we hold

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, two years, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services; two working days stated
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and no UAE premises
  • A tutor gives feedback on the student's own Personal Project and produces no part of it

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit and a Bur Dubai parent can check it. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and states a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published officially, no amount should be quoted to you.

A related rule is worth knowing. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct likewise bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. If someone offers you your child's own subject teacher privately, neither of them should be making that arrangement.

On IB Gram, three plain statements. We hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry; we do not hold one and do not describe ourselves as KHDA approved. We have no office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE.

And the academic honesty line, which in the MYP concentrates on the Personal Project. A tutor teaches, questions, reviews and gives feedback on work the student has produced. A tutor does not write, co-write, edit to completion or supply any part of a Personal Project, a process journal, an interdisciplinary task or any other submitted assessment. We also do not publish or redistribute IB subject guides, assessment criteria documents or school material as downloads; we reference them and cite the source. One provider ranking in this market sells completed internal assessments outright, which is an IB malpractice trigger for the student who submits one.

Where we tutor

Bur Dubai and the districts around it

Bur Dubai sits on the creek's south bank in the oldest part of the city. The MYP calendar is the same everywhere; what varies by neighbourhood is which hour of the afternoon a session can actually hold.

Bur Dubai

Apartments, several large schools within reach, and a busy early evening. Most MYP students living here travel out of the district to an IB school, so the session hour has to survive someone else's journey.

Al Mankhool

Immediately west with its own school cluster, often a walk or a five-minute drive. Households here can hold a 4pm slot, which is unusual in Old Dubai and worth booking in the first week of term.

Karama

Dense flats a few minutes inland, with shared study space the norm. For document-based MYP work a quiet surface and a single screen matter more than how close the tutor is.

Oud Metha

Inside the school belt, with schools walking distance away and the shortest commutes here. The earliest evening slots are usable, which is a real advantage when a task deadline is close.

Al Garhoud

Across the creek near the airport, and the nearest concentrated IB provision to Bur Dubai. Most MYP students in this part of the city attend a school in or near this cluster.

Deira

The north bank, with an unpredictable five o'clock crossing. Deira and Bur Dubai MYP families reach the same conclusion about scheduling, because travel is the unreliable variable rather than the teaching.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A large British and Indian curriculum belt towards Sharjah where MYP is a minority route. Students here commute furthest to an IB school and generally need a session after six.

Al Jaffiliya and Satwa

Between Bur Dubai and Jumeirah, short runs to two clusters, and frequently two curricula inside one household. The family timetable rather than the tutor's address is what constrains the week.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Bur Dubai

Bur Dubai, Al Mankhool and Oud Metha

Mostly British and Indian curriculum, which means MYP students from these streets usually commute to an IB school elsewhere in the city. That daily journey is the practical reason a fixed online hour holds where a travel-based arrangement does not.

  • The Indian High School, Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Al Garhoud, Deira and Al Mamzar

The nearest IB provision to Bur Dubai and where most MYP students in this part of the city actually study. Shorter school runs than the Al Qusais belt and the only group for whom a 4.30pm MYP session is routinely realistic.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Indian Academy, Dubai

Schools appear here only as context for the local education market. IB Gram has no affiliation with, partnership with, or endorsement from any school named.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask for the assessment map first

Before booking anything, ask the MYP coordinator which criteria are assessed in which unit and term across the subject groups that matter. That one document turns MYP tutoring from a reaction into a plan and sometimes shows that the problem is a crunch week rather than a subject.

  2. 02

Place the block before the task

Two or three sessions landing in the fortnight before a criterion is assessed are worth several times the same sessions after the mark comes back. We will ask for the unit planner and the task-specific clarification, and work from those rather than from a textbook.

  3. 03

A free trial, read against a descriptor

One session at no cost with the tutor you would continue with, spent on a marked task or an upcoming one, read against the exact criterion descriptor. You get a written note of what the descriptor asks and where the gap is, whether or not you book anything further.

  4. 04

Start the Personal Project in term one

If your child is entering MYP 5, the goal and the success criteria want settling early and the journal habit wants establishing in the first weeks. Four to six thin sessions across the year costs less and achieves more than an intensive block three weeks before the deadline.

  5. 05

Fix the hour against the real afternoon

Al Mankhool and Oud Metha households can often hold 4pm or 4.30pm; Karama around five; Deira-side and Al Nahda families usually after six, and all of these shift during Ramadan. Agree the shift in advance rather than rescheduling weekly. Times are Gulf Standard Time.

  6. 06

Use the handover window, then stop

The weeks between MYP 5 and DP1 are the best value in five years: six to ten sessions on stamina, algebra and command terms, with a fixed end date. After that the block is finished and we will say so rather than rolling it into DP1 by default.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work from the school's calendar, not ours

The assessment map, the unit planner and the task-specific clarification decide what a useful hour contains. A tutor who teaches a topic without knowing which criterion is about to be judged is preparing a student for the wrong thing, however well they teach it.

Short blocks with an end point

Most MYP problems are two to six sessions. We price and plan in blocks rather than in standing commitments, because a standing hour nobody is measuring is how families spend five years' worth of budget on the Middle Years Programme without a clear return.

The handover window taken seriously

The weeks between MYP 5 and DP1 close three gaps that no MYP report can show, and almost nobody uses them because nothing has gone wrong yet. Six to ten sessions there is the cheapest high-return purchase available across the whole programme.

A written boundary on the Personal Project

We coach goal-setting, testable success criteria, journal habit and question-led reflection. We produce no part of the project, the journal or the report. That boundary is written down before work starts, because under IB rules the consequence of crossing it falls on the student.

Figures attributed and claims absent

Each AED range here names the provider that published it and the month it was read. We publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor count, hold no UAE premises, and claim no approval from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education.

Sometimes the answer is a calendar reminder

Service as action needs ten minutes a term. A crunch week explains a dip better than a subject weakness does. Where a free fix exists we will name it rather than sell hours against a problem that scheduling would have prevented.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bur Dubai: your questions answered

When in the MYP year is tutoring actually worth buying?+

In the fortnight before a criterion is assessed. Not every criterion is judged in every unit, so the school's assessment map tells you which letters are being marked in which term across all eight subject groups. Two or three sessions landing before the task is set are worth several times the same sessions after the mark comes home, because the student arrives already knowing what the descriptor rewards rather than learning it from a score. Ask the MYP coordinator for the map; most schools will share it.

What is an MYP assessment map and why should we ask for it?+

It is the school's plan of which units run in which term and which of the four criteria each unit assesses, across the subject groups. Schools build it to plan teaching rather than to hand to parents, which is why so few families have seen one. With it you can time paid help to land before a judgement, understand why a criterion is missing from a report - often it simply has not been assessed yet - and spot the weeks where four criterion-marked tasks fall together.

How early should the MYP Personal Project really start?+

Term one of MYP 5. The project is assessed on Planning, Applying skills and Reflecting - 24 marks - and sixteen of those rest on the process journal and the report rather than on the product. A goal narrowed early leaves months of slack; the same goal set in the final term produces a panic. Counted backwards, the report needs weeks, the product needs months, and the journal needs the whole period, because a reconstructed journal is visible to a marker and scores poorly.

Why did my child get a separate low grade for an interdisciplinary unit?+

Almost certainly because the work was two parallel pieces rather than one synthesised argument. Interdisciplinary units are assessed on Evaluating, Synthesising and Reflecting, and the Synthesising criterion marks whether two disciplines genuinely inform each other. A competent science section and a competent history section with a joining sentence is the commonest and most invisible failure. The test before writing is one sentence: what does the second discipline let you say that the first could not?

Does our school use IB eAssessment for MYP 5?+

That is a question for your MYP coordinator, and it should be asked before the final year begins. Where a school opts in, the final MYP Certificate grade comes from on-screen examinations and ePortfolios marked by the IB rather than from the school's own criterion judgements, which introduces external deadlines and the need for timed on-screen practice. Where a school does not, the record stays school-assessed and the Personal Project is the main fixed structure. Two schools five minutes apart can differ.

What should we do in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1?+

Close the three gaps MYP reporting cannot show. Examination stamina, because MYP assessment is coursework-shaped and the Diploma ends in timed papers - build from thirty minutes upward. Algebraic fluency, because MYP Mathematics rewards investigation while Diploma Mathematics rewards manipulation under time pressure. And command terms, because the Diploma publishes a defined list per subject with specific expected responses. Six to ten sessions in that window is the best-value purchase in the whole programme and almost nobody makes it.

Why is service as action a problem by MYP 5?+

Because it is required and reported across all five years but not graded on criteria, so it gets ignored until it cannot be. A student who has recorded nothing faces reconstructing five years of reflection in the same weeks as the Personal Project. The task itself is tiny - a short entry per activity naming what was done, what was learned and which outcome it addresses. One calendar reminder a term, set in the same week as the school's reporting date, removes the whole problem for free.

Can a tutor help with the Personal Project journal?+

Yes, and the help is process rather than content. A tutor can establish a journal habit that takes ten minutes a week, show what an entry needs to evidence against the Planning and Reflecting descriptors, and ask the questions that produce reflection instead of a process narrative. A tutor cannot write entries, supply material to be submitted, or edit the report to completion. We put that boundary in writing before any Personal Project work begins, because the consequence of crossing it falls on the student.

My child's MYP grade dropped a point this term. Should we be worried?+

Not necessarily, and the assessment map usually explains it. Different units assess different criteria, so a grade built from Criterion A and C in one period and Criterion B and D in the next is not measuring the same thing twice. A drop can mean a harder criterion was assessed rather than that the student got worse at the subject. Ask which criteria were judged in each period before reacting. If the same criterion dropped twice, that is a real signal and worth two or three sessions.

Do you send an MYP tutor to our flat in Bur Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. Every lesson for a Bur Dubai family is one-to-one over live video, stated before payment. For MYP work the format fits, because almost everything assessed is a document: the unit planner, the task sheet, the clarification and the student's own draft sit on one shared screen, annotated against each descriptor and saved for the next task. The stronger argument is timing - a pre-task block has to land in a particular fortnight.

How much should a Bur Dubai family expect to spend on MYP tutoring?+

Less than most do, if the purchases are timed. A pre-task block is two or three sessions; Personal Project support is four to six spread across MYP 5; the DP1 handover is six to ten in a fixed window. Market rates read in October 2026 put qualified subject tutors at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200, Bestimate placing specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, and TutorChase at AED 270. A standing weekly hour, by Bestimate's monthly estimates, runs AED 240 to 1,200.

Does the MYP prepare a student for Diploma examinations?+

For the content and the thinking, yes. For the examination itself, less so, and that is the gap worth planning for. MYP assessment is coursework-shaped throughout - tasks, investigations, projects, with feedback cycles - while the Diploma ends in externally marked timed papers. A student arriving in DP1 from MYP 5 without IGCSE has often never written for ninety minutes under timed conditions, and the first DP1 mock reflects that rather than their understanding. Timed practice built up progressively solves it mechanically.

How many MYP subject groups should we buy tutoring in at once?+

Usually one, and sometimes none. If the same criterion letter is weak across several subject groups - Criterion B, say, which asks for a plan or a line of inquiry in Sciences, Mathematics, Individuals and societies and Design - that is one transferable skill and one tutor can move several reported grades. If the weakness is genuinely different in each, buying three standing hours against eight subject groups is not a plan. We will say which case you are in during the free trial.

Does my child have to study Arabic alongside the MYP in Dubai?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for, under KHDA requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with KHDA advising a minimum of 25 minutes for any mandatory subject lesson. Those hours sit in the same week as eight MYP subject groups, which is part of why MYP weeks in Dubai are tighter than families expect.

Is a mid-term start a problem for MYP tutoring?+

No, and in the MYP it is less costly than in an examined course. Criterion judgements are gathered over a reporting period and a later, stronger piece of evidence carries weight, so an early weak task is recoverable in a way an early low examination mark is not. What matters more is whether the start lands before or after the next assessment of the criterion in question. Ask for the assessment map and place the block accordingly rather than starting on the first available week.

Does an MYP tutor working with a Bur Dubai family need a UAE permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and states a two-working-day completion time. Ask any prospective tutor directly. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no official fine schedule is published.

Ask for the map, then pick the fortnight

One request to the MYP coordinator - the assessment map for the year - changes what MYP tutoring is for. With it you can place two or three sessions before a criterion is judged instead of after, see the crunch weeks coming, start the Personal Project journal in term one, and use the handover weeks into DP1 that almost nobody uses. If you want help reading it, book the free trial lesson: one hour, no cost, with the tutor you would continue with, spent on a task read against its actual descriptor and a written note of where the gap sits.
