IB Chemistry Tutor in Bur Dubai

An IB chemistry tutor in Bur Dubai spends most of a useful hour on arithmetic rather than on chemistry. Nearly every long question in Paper 2 runs through a mole calculation, and a student who is shaky there loses marks in energetics, equilibrium, acids and electrochemistry all at once. We teach one-to-one over live video, starting from the calculation chain the whole subject is built on.

IB & IGCSE in Bur Dubai

Most chemistry problems are arithmetic problems wearing a lab coat

A Bur Dubai parent typically arrives with a specific complaint: organic chemistry, or energetics, or equilibrium. In the great majority of cases the named topic is not the problem. It is where the problem becomes visible. Chemistry is an unusually connected subject, and almost every quantitative question runs through the same short chain - a mass or a volume or a concentration converted into moles, moles related through a balanced equation, moles converted back into something the question asked for. A student who does that chain hesitantly loses marks in six topics simultaneously, and re-teaching any one of those topics will not fix it.

That is the single most useful diagnostic in the subject, and it takes about ten minutes. Ask a student to find the number of moles in a mass of a compound, then in a volume of a solution of known concentration, then in a volume of gas, talking through each step. If any of the three is slow, uncertain or reliant on a remembered triangle rather than an understood relationship, that is the first eight hours of any chemistry programme regardless of what the report card says. It is unglamorous work and it changes grades more reliably than anything else available.

The current chemistry guide organises content into Structure and Reactivity rather than into the older topic numbering, and it covers models of the particulate nature of matter, bonding and structure, classification of matter, what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far a reaction goes, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Assessment is Paper 1 - a multiple-choice section plus a data-based section - worth 36 per cent, Paper 2 extended response worth 44 per cent, and the Scientific Investigation worth 20 per cent. Higher Level is 240 teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, with extra depth in each area.

Where chemistry differs from physics is in how punishing the data booklet is. Chemistry's booklet carries the periodic table, enthalpy and bond enthalpy data, standard electrode potentials, pKa and pKb values, infrared and mass spectrometry reference data and more. Students who have not navigated it under time pressure lose minutes they cannot spare in Paper 2 and quote approximate values instead of exact ones. Learning where things sit in it is a genuine, teachable skill and not a trivial one.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram is an online platform, and for families anywhere in the UAE every lesson is one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are a service we run only in India. For chemistry this suits the work. A shared screen holds the question, the student's own working, the data booklet page and the mark scheme at the same time, annotated together and saved to revisit. Working a multi-step equilibrium calculation side by side on a screen beats reading it upside down across a Karama dining table.

Three points on the chemistry route through a Bur Dubai school, plus the IGCSE foundation most students arrive with. What a tutor should prioritise differs sharply between them.

DP SLAges 16-19 · 150 hours

Standard Level chemistry

The core of Structure and Reactivity without the Higher Level extensions, with shorter papers and the same Scientific Investigation worth 20 per cent. Standard Level students face the same mole chain and the same data booklet with ninety fewer teaching hours, which makes calculation fluency proportionally more valuable. The commonest Standard Level profile is a student who understands the chemistry conceptually and converts it into marks unreliably.

Many Standard Level chemistry candidates in Dubai arrive from IGCSE Coordinated or Combined Science rather than from separate Chemistry, which means less laboratory background and less exposure to volumetric work. Two early sessions on titration arithmetic and significant figures saves a term of small, recurring losses.

DP HLAges 16-19 · 240 hours

Higher Level chemistry

The same areas taken considerably further, with longer papers and additional content including deeper energetics, rate laws, extended acid-base and redox treatment, and more demanding organic mechanisms. Higher Level candidates lose ground most often on the mathematical extensions - logarithmic pH and pKa work, rate orders determined from data, and electrode potential calculations - rather than on descriptive chemistry.

Higher Level chemistry is a standard requirement for medicine and for several engineering routes, which is why so many Dubai students take it alongside Higher Level biology or physics. Students aiming at medicine should confirm the specific requirement directly with each university rather than assume, and no tutoring is required for any admissions process.

IADP1 into DP2

The Scientific Investigation

Twenty per cent of the chemistry grade, assessed on four criteria - Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation - and submitted at a school deadline long before the papers. In chemistry the commonest design failure is a question whose dependent variable cannot be measured precisely enough with school apparatus, which caps the data analysis and everything downstream of it.

Internal deadlines are set by your child's school, not by the IB, which means they are a date you can ask about and plan around. In Dubai schools these typically cluster in DP2's first term, alongside Extended Essay deadlines, which is why chemistry investigation work started in DP1 is calmer and cheaper.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE chemistry as the foundation

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 separate chemistry, or the chemistry portion of a coordinated or combined award. Students from separate chemistry arrive at the Diploma with mole calculations already met; students from combined science often do not, and the gap shows in the first DP1 term. Neither route is a barrier, but they need different opening work.

The Bur Dubai school cluster is heavily British and Indian curriculum, so most Diploma chemistry students here have an IGCSE background of some kind. Ask which award your child took: separate chemistry, coordinated or combined, because it predicts the first term's difficulty better than their grade does.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a chemistry tutor should actually work on, in rough order of how many marks each area controls across the whole course rather than in syllabus order.

The mole and the mole chain

SL and HL

Mass to moles, concentration and volume to moles, gas volume to moles, and moles related through a balanced equation. This single chain sits underneath titration, energetics, equilibrium, acids and electrochemistry. A student who is slow here is slow everywhere, and this is the first thing to diagnose in any chemistry student regardless of the topic they named.

Limiting reactant and yield

SL and HL

Identifying which reactant runs out, and calculating theoretical, actual and percentage yield as well as atom economy. The classic loss is calculating from the wrong reactant and then carrying the error through four marks of correct subsequent working. Worth a session on its own because it recurs in every series.

Titration and volumetric analysis

SL and HL

Reading a burette, back titration, and the arithmetic of relating two solutions through an equation. Back titration is the one most students never truly master, and it appears in Paper 2 and in investigations alike. The method is short and teachable once the mole chain is secure.

Energetics and thermochemistry

SL and HL

Enthalpy change from calorimetry, Hess's law cycles, bond enthalpy calculations, and at Higher Level Born-Haber cycles and entropy and Gibbs energy. Sign conventions cause more lost marks here than any chemistry concept, and calorimetry questions fail on which mass goes into the calculation.

Equilibrium and the equilibrium constant

SL and HL

Le Chatelier's principle qualitatively, then the equilibrium constant expression and at Higher Level calculations from initial and equilibrium amounts. Students write the expression correctly and then substitute amounts rather than concentrations. Explaining what the magnitude of the constant physically means is a frequently asked and frequently fumbled question.

Acids, bases and pH

SL and HL

Strong and weak acid behaviour, the pH scale, and at Higher Level pKa, pKb, buffers and titration curves. The logarithmic work is where Higher Level candidates lose most: pH from concentration is routine, concentration from pH less so, and weak acid calculations require an approximation students apply without stating it.

Redox and electrochemistry

SL and HL

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrolysis, and at Higher Level standard electrode potentials and cell potential calculations. Sign conventions again, plus the discipline of reversing a half-equation and its potential together. Half-equations balanced in acidic and in basic conditions are two distinct methods and students conflate them.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

SL and HL

Functional groups, nomenclature, reaction types, and at Higher Level nucleophilic substitution, elimination and electrophilic addition mechanisms with curly arrows. Memorising individual reactions fails; the mechanisms generalise and the memorised list does not. Curly arrow direction and placement are marked precisely and are the most common presentation loss.

Structure and bonding

SL and HL

Models of the particulate nature of matter, ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, and shapes of molecules. Explaining a physical property in terms of a named intermolecular force, in the right order of strength, is the question style that separates grades, and vague answers about molecules being held together score nothing.

Spectroscopy and structure determination

SL and HL

Infrared, mass spectrometry and at Higher Level nuclear magnetic resonance, interpreted together to identify a compound. Entirely a data booklet skill: students who know where the correlation tables sit answer these quickly, and those who do not lose both marks and minutes they need elsewhere in Paper 2.

The chemistry data booklet

SL and HL, all papers

The periodic table, enthalpy data, bond enthalpies, electrode potentials, pKa values, spectroscopic correlation tables. Navigating it quickly is a trainable skill and a genuine advantage in Paper 2, where time is tight. Students who quote remembered approximate values instead of booklet values lose accuracy marks for no reason.

Uncertainty and significant figures

SL and HL

Percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and quoting an answer to a justified number of significant figures. Assessed in the Paper 1 data section and in the investigation's Data analysis criterion. The commonest single loss in all of chemistry is an answer given to five figures from two-figure data.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of chemistry support. Which one fits depends on whether the problem is the calculation chain, a specific topic, or the investigation.

Calculation chain repair

A short block aimed at the arithmetic spine: moles from mass, concentration and gas volume, limiting reactant, yield, and relating two species through a balanced equation until it is automatic. This is where we start with most chemistry students regardless of the topic they named, because the named topic usually sits downstream of it.

  • Diagnosed in the first ten minutes by having the student talk through three conversions
  • Four to eight sessions, with an explicit end point
  • Checked against past-paper questions from several different topics
  • Delivered online, one-to-one, over live video

Weekly subject support through the two years

A standing hour following the school's own sequence rather than a tutor's scheme, with past-paper questions introduced on each topic as it is taught rather than saved for a final revision block. Appropriate for students whose difficulty is genuinely broad rather than concentrated in one area.

  • Same tutor, same weekly hour in Gulf Standard Time
  • Past-paper questions on each topic as it is covered
  • Data booklet navigation drilled throughout, not at the end
  • Written session notes after each lesson

Investigation design and data support

Help with the Scientific Investigation before and during data collection: interrogating whether the dependent variable can be measured precisely enough with school apparatus, planning enough values and repeats, and teaching uncertainty propagation. The student designs, collects, processes and writes every word; we ask questions and give feedback.

  • Research question tested for measurability before any apparatus is booked
  • Data plan checked for range, repeats and recorded uncertainties
  • Uncertainty and graph technique taught as transferable skills
  • A written boundary on what a tutor will not do

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bur Dubai

01

The mole chain, and why nearly every chemistry mark runs through it

If a student can convert between mass, moles, concentration, volume and particles fluently and can relate two substances through a balanced equation without hesitating, most of Paper 2 becomes accessible. If they cannot, then energetics, equilibrium, titration, electrochemistry and yield calculations will all appear separately broken, and a family will spend money on four topics rather than on one skill.

The diagnostic is quick and any parent can run it. Ask three questions out loud. How many moles are in a given mass of a named compound? How many moles are in a given volume of a solution of known concentration? How many moles are in a given volume of a gas at stated conditions? Watch for three things: reaching for a remembered triangle rather than stating a relationship, pausing over units, and converting cubic decimetres to cubic centimetres the wrong way. Any of those means the chain is not yet automatic.

What makes this worth insisting on is the compounding. A calorimetry question requires moles before it requires any thermochemistry. An equilibrium calculation requires moles before any equilibrium constant. A titration requires it twice. In a six-mark question the mole step is often the first mark and every subsequent mark depends on it, so a student who loses it loses the question rather than a mark. Examiners do award follow-through credit on correct subsequent working, which is itself a reason to show every step - and students who work in their heads forfeit even that.

The teaching is not complicated and it does not take long. What it takes is deliberate, repeated practice across topics rather than within one, so the student meets the same chain in a thermochemistry question, then in a gas question, then in a titration, and stops seeing them as different problems. Four to eight sessions typically makes it automatic, and the effect shows up across the whole paper rather than in one section.

Energetics: where the sign conventions eat the marks

Thermochemistry is the first place in the Diploma where a student can do every arithmetic step correctly and still score zero, because the sign is wrong. An exothermic enthalpy change is negative. A calorimetry calculation on a solution uses the mass of the solution, not the mass of the solute that dissolved in it. A Hess cycle run in the reverse direction reverses the sign of that step. None of these are difficult ideas. All of them are routinely got wrong under time pressure, and they are worth drilling explicitly rather than hoping they settle.

Hess's law cycles reward a clearly drawn diagram, and students who try to do them without drawing one lose track of direction. The instruction we give is mechanical: draw the cycle, put an arrow on every step, write the enthalpy value with its sign next to each arrow, then read the route. A student following that procedure gets the sign right; a student reasoning in their head gets it right about half the time, which is a coin flip for several marks per paper.

Bond enthalpy calculations have their own trap. They use average bond enthalpies and therefore give an approximate value, which is itself examinable - a question may ask why the bond enthalpy answer differs from the experimental one. Students who have only ever practised the calculation cannot answer the explanation, and the explanation is often worth as much as the arithmetic. At Higher Level, Born-Haber cycles add more steps and more signs, and entropy and Gibbs energy work introduces a unit mismatch between kilojoules and joules that catches almost everyone the first several times.

A note on practice material. We work from the official past papers and mark schemes through your child's school or the board's own channels; we do not host or redistribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson papers, mark schemes, grade boundary tables or subject guides ourselves, because reproducing them is someone else's copyright. Your child's chemistry teacher can usually supply the papers directly, and that is the right route.

Equilibrium, and what the number actually means

  • Concentrations, not amounts, go into the equilibrium constant expression
  • The constant describes position of equilibrium, never rate
  • Only temperature changes the value of the constant
  • Set out initial, change and equilibrium as three labelled rows under the equation

Equilibrium divides into a qualitative part that almost everyone can do and a quantitative part that very few do confidently. Le Chatelier's principle - predicting the direction of shift when concentration, pressure or temperature changes - is well taught and well answered. The equilibrium constant is a different matter, and it is where the discriminating marks sit.

Three specific failures recur. First, students write a correct equilibrium constant expression and then substitute amounts in moles rather than concentrations, which is wrong whenever the volume is not one cubic decimetre. Second, they are asked what a large or small value of the constant tells you and give an answer about the rate of reaction, which it does not describe at all - the constant describes position, not speed, and conflating the two is the single most common conceptual error in the topic. Third, at Higher Level, they are given initial amounts and one equilibrium amount and cannot set out the change systematically, which is a layout problem rather than a chemistry one.

That third issue has a mechanical solution. Set out initial, change and equilibrium as three labelled rows under the balanced equation, fill in what is known, and use the stoichiometric ratios to complete the change row before touching the constant expression. Students who do this get full marks; students who attempt it in prose do not. It takes one session to teach and it never stops paying, because the same layout handles acid dissociation problems at Higher Level too.

The temperature point deserves a sentence of its own because it is examined repeatedly. Changing concentration or pressure shifts the position of equilibrium but does not change the value of the constant. Changing temperature changes the value of the constant itself. Students who have learned the Le Chatelier predictions by pattern rather than by principle answer this wrongly almost every time, and it appears in some form in most series.

04

Acids, bases and the logarithm problem at Higher Level

At Standard Level, acid-base chemistry is largely descriptive with straightforward pH work. At Higher Level it becomes the most mathematically demanding part of the course, and the mathematics rather than the chemistry is what costs students marks. Logarithms appear in pH, in pKa and pKb, and in buffer calculations, and a student who is uncomfortable with logarithms in mathematics will be uncomfortable with them here.

The asymmetry is worth naming. Calculating pH from a known concentration of a strong acid is routine and almost everyone can do it. Going the other way - finding a concentration from a pH - requires an inverse logarithm and a calculator operation that students fumble under pressure. Weak acid calculations require an approximation, namely that the dissociated amount is negligible compared with the initial concentration, and the marks are available for stating that assumption. Students who use the approximation without naming it lose the mark that was there for naming it.

Buffers and titration curves are the other recurring area. A titration curve question usually asks for the pH at a specified point - at the start, at half-equivalence, at equivalence, after excess - and each point needs a different method. Half-equivalence is the one worth memorising properly, because at that point the pH equals the pKa and a question can be answered in a single line by a student who knows it and in no lines at all by one who does not. The shape of the curve for a weak acid against a strong base, and which indicator suits it, is examined in most series.

The practical teaching point is that this area is best approached as applied mathematics taught by a chemist. A student working on logarithmic pH problems is doing algebra with chemical labels on it, and tutoring that treats it as chemistry content to be understood rather than as technique to be practised tends to produce a student who follows the explanation and then cannot do the next question. Practice, in volume, against past-paper questions is what fixes it.

Organic chemistry: why memorising the reactions fails and the mechanisms do not

  • Learn the mechanisms and generate the reactions, not the reverse
  • Curly arrows start at electrons and end where the electrons go - marked precisely
  • Nomenclature losses are carelessness; one session of examples fixes them
  • Spectroscopy is a data booklet drill as much as a chemistry topic

Organic chemistry is the topic Bur Dubai parents name most often, and the reason it feels impossible is usually the method being used on it. A student who treats it as a list of reactions to memorise faces an ever-growing list, forgets the middle of it, and panics. A student who understands a handful of mechanisms can generate most of the list from first principles and recognises a reaction they have never seen.

At Higher Level the mechanisms are explicitly examined with curly arrows, and they are marked precisely. An arrow must start at a lone pair or at a bond and must end where the electrons go. Arrows drawn from an atom rather than from its electrons lose marks even when the overall transformation is right. Nucleophilic substitution has two pathways with different conditions and different stereochemical consequences; elimination competes with substitution under conditions a question will specify; electrophilic addition follows a predictable pattern once the intermediate is understood. These are four or five ideas, not forty.

Nomenclature is the other half of the problem, and it is purely mechanical. Longest chain, lowest locants, substituents alphabetically, functional group priority. Students who lose nomenclature marks are almost always losing them to carelessness rather than ignorance, and the repair is a few dozen examples in a single session rather than a course of teaching. It is worth doing precisely because it is easy marks that strong students throw away.

Spectroscopy belongs with organic chemistry in practice, because structure determination questions combine them. Infrared, mass spectrometry and at Higher Level nuclear magnetic resonance are interpreted together to identify a compound, and every reference table needed sits in the data booklet. A student who knows where those tables are answers these questions quickly; one who does not loses both the marks and the minutes. This is a data booklet drill, not a chemistry lesson, and it is one of the cheapest sessions in the subject.

06

The chemistry investigation: four criteria and where the design caps the grade

  • Research design is settled before any apparatus is booked
  • Check that the expected change exceeds the instrument's uncertainty
  • Enough values, across enough range, with repeats and recorded uncertainties
  • Evaluation needs specific limitations, not a generic list

The Scientific Investigation is 20 per cent of the chemistry grade, assessed on Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. In chemistry the characteristic design failure is different from physics: it is choosing a dependent variable that cannot be measured precisely enough with the apparatus a school actually has. A colour change judged by eye, a mass change too small for the balance's resolution, a temperature change of two degrees measured with a thermometer reading to the nearest degree - all of these produce data whose uncertainty swamps the effect being studied, and no analysis rescues it.

That is why the useful hour happens before anything is booked in the laboratory. The questions are concrete: what exactly will you measure, with what instrument, to what resolution, and is the expected change large enough to be distinguishable from the uncertainty in that instrument? How many values across what range, and how many repeats at each? A fifteen-minute conversation at that stage prevents the most expensive mistake available in the component.

Data analysis and Conclusion then follow from what was actually collected. Enough values across enough of the range, with repeats and with uncertainties recorded at the point of measurement rather than estimated afterwards, give a student something to process. Five values collected once do not. The Conclusion can only be as strong as the analysis, and comparing the result with an accepted literature value - cited properly - is where many students stop short.

Evaluation gives away more marks than any other criterion in the component. It asks for limitations specific to what happened and improvements that would actually address them. Generic lists - more repeats, human error, better equipment - score nothing. A limitation that names a particular systematic error in that experiment, explains the direction in which it would skew the result, and proposes a realistic change, scores. On what we will and will not do: a tutor asks questions, teaches uncertainty and graph technique, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor does not design the experiment, process the data, or write any part of the report. That boundary is written down before any investigation work begins, because under IB academic honesty rules the consequence of crossing it falls on the student.

What chemistry tuition costs in this part of Dubai, and what you can check yourself

A parent can verify every figure in this section without taking our word for anything, which is the point of publishing it. Three providers in this market publish no price at all; two publish in US dollars, which is not a currency a Dubai family transacts in. The ranges below are in dirhams, each attributed to the provider that published it, read in October 2026.

At the budget end, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. For Diploma chemistry that band buys homework supervision and a second explanation, which is not what a student losing marks on logarithmic pH calculations needs. The next band is a qualified subject tutor online, where Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table places IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above; TutorChase publishes AED 270; BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors. Monthly packages in the market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

What the bands actually buy, for chemistry specifically: the mid band is right for calculation chain work and for content teaching, because that is competent instruction of well-defined material and prestige adds nothing. The specialist band earns its premium for investigation design and for reading a script to find where marks are being lost, both of which are judgement rather than knowledge. Nothing in the market is worth a premium for the final fortnight's past-paper practice, because that work belongs to the student.

Two questions to ask any provider, including us. Is the quoted rate per hour or per lesson - a ninety-minute lesson at an hourly rate is a different number from a ninety-minute lesson at a lesson rate. And what happens if you stop after one session. Those two answers separate providers faster than any amount of marketing copy. None of the figures above are IB Gram prices; we do not publish a rate card on a landing page, we hold no office or centre in the UAE, and we are not accredited, approved or licensed by the International Baccalaureate, KHDA or anyone else.

A chemistry tutor in a Bur Dubai flat against one-to-one online

The in-home instinct is reasonable here. A tutor in the room can be observed, a parent can judge whether an hour was worked, and in a flat with younger children it avoids a journey entirely. We take those arguments seriously rather than dismissing them.

The position, stated before payment: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. Every lesson for a Bur Dubai family is one-to-one over live video. We put it on the page because two providers ranking for these searches route UAE parents to overseas numbers without disclosing where the tutor actually sits, and no family should learn that after paying a month's fees.

For chemistry the format fits the work unusually well. A multi-step calculation - a Hess cycle, a buffer problem, a three-row equilibrium layout - is best worked on a shared surface where the tutor can annotate the student's own working in place and the whole thing can be saved. The data booklet can be open on the same screen at the relevant page, which matters because navigating it is itself a taught skill. A sheet of paper slid across a table and taken away afterwards does none of that.

The supply argument is the decisive one, though. A teacher who knows precisely where a research question will cap the Evaluation criterion, who can read a Higher Level script fast enough to rank mark losses in an hour, and who has taught the current guide's treatment of reactivity properly is a narrow specialism. The chance that such a person lives within a twenty-minute drive of Al Mankhool and is free at 5pm on a Tuesday is small. Insisting on proximity means accepting a generalist, and the market data shows the in-home premium is paying for travel rather than for that expertise.

Regulators, permits and the claims nobody in this market should make

  • Five regulators cover UAE private schools: KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, RAK DoK and the Ministry of Education
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or examination-board accreditation and no UAE premises
  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, two years, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No official fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. In 2024-25 the sector was 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen different curricula. Abu Dhabi's regulator is the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in that emirate; Sharjah's is the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Ras Al Khaimah has its own Department of Knowledge; and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Those five bodies are the complete regulator map, and most tutoring sites in this market name none of them.

Naming a regulator and claiming its approval are entirely different things. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified, licensed, authorised or partnered by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International or Pearson. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai - initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry - and we do not hold one. No tutoring platform without that permit should describe its tutors as KHDA-approved, and the phrase should be challenged wherever it appears.

On permits for individuals, the facts are checkable. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees, and states a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published officially, so no figure should be quoted to you by anybody.

Two more things we will not do. We will not write, complete, draft or edit to completion any part of a Scientific Investigation, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or other assessed coursework - one competitor in this SERP sells completed internal assessments outright, which is an IB malpractice trigger for the student who submits one. And we will not publish a statistic without a sample size, a date and a method attached, which is why there is no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor headcount anywhere on this page.

Where we tutor

Bur Dubai and the districts around it

Bur Dubai sits on the creek's south bank in the oldest part of the city. The chemistry is identical across these neighbourhoods; what varies is the hour at which a focused session is actually possible.

Bur Dubai

Flats, short school runs and a busy early evening. Most Diploma chemistry students living here travel out of the district to an IB school, so a session time that does not depend on anyone else's journey is worth more than proximity.

Al Mankhool

Immediately west with its own school cluster, often a walk or a five-minute drive. Households here can genuinely hold a 4pm slot, which is rare in old Dubai and worth booking in the first week of term.

Karama

Dense apartments a few minutes inland. A shared table and one laptop between siblings is the normal condition rather than the exception, and a calculation-heavy subject needs a quiet surface more than most.

Oud Metha

Inside the school belt itself, with several large schools in walking distance. The shortest commutes in this set, which makes the earliest evening slots usable - the one genuine scheduling advantage here.

Al Garhoud

Over the creek near the airport, and the nearest concentration of IB provision to Bur Dubai. Most Diploma chemistry students in this part of the city are at a school in or near this cluster.

Deira

The north bank. The five o'clock creek crossing is unpredictable in both directions, which is why travel-dependent arrangements fail during a revision term and a fixed online hour does not.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A large British and Indian curriculum belt running towards Sharjah. The longest Diploma commutes in this set, and useful chemistry session times here are generally after six in the evening.

Al Jaffiliya and Satwa

Between Bur Dubai and Jumeirah with short runs to two school clusters. Families here often have children on different curricula, making the household timetable the binding constraint on when chemistry can happen.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Bur Dubai

Bur Dubai, Al Mankhool and Oud Metha

Mainly British and Indian curriculum, which is why most Diploma chemistry students from these streets commute to an IB school elsewhere. It also means most arrive with an IGCSE chemistry background, and whether that was separate, coordinated or combined predicts the first DP1 term.

  • The Indian High School, Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Al Garhoud, Deira and Al Mamzar

The nearest IB provision to Bur Dubai and where most Diploma chemistry students in this part of the city actually study. Shorter school runs than the Al Qusais belt, and the only group for whom a 4.30pm chemistry session is routinely realistic.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Indian Academy, Dubai

Schools appear here only as context for the local education market. IB Gram has no affiliation with, partnership with, or endorsement from any school named.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Run the ten-minute mole diagnostic

Before booking anything, have your child talk through three conversions out loud: mass to moles, concentration and volume to moles, gas volume to moles. Hesitation, a remembered triangle instead of a relationship, or a unit slip tells you where to start, whatever topic the report card names.

  2. 02

Send a marked script, not a topic list

The most useful thing you can share is a marked past paper or a returned school assessment. Fifteen minutes with a script and the mark scheme locates the losses precisely; an hour spent discussing which topics feel hard usually locates them in the wrong place.

  3. 03

A free trial, worked on a real question

One session at no cost with the tutor you would continue with, spent working a multi-step past-paper calculation or interrogating an investigation research question. You get a written note of what was found, whether or not you book anything further.

  4. 04

Fix the hour against the real commute

Choose a slot that survives a bad afternoon rather than a good one, and agree in advance that it shifts during Ramadan. Oud Metha and Al Mankhool households can often hold 4.30pm; Karama, Deira-side and Al Nahda families usually do better after six. All times are Gulf Standard Time.

  5. 05

Check progress across topics, not within one

The test of calculation chain work is whether it holds in a thermochemistry question, then a gas question, then a titration. We set questions from different topics deliberately, because a student who can do the chain in one context and not another has not yet got it.

  6. 06

    End the block

Calculation repair takes four to eight sessions and then it is done. Investigation support ends at submission. We would rather tell you a block is finished than keep a standing booking nobody is measuring, and if timed-paper marks have plateaued, that is information rather than a reason to buy more hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We diagnose upstream of the named topic

When a family says organic chemistry, we check the mole chain first, because the named topic is usually where a more basic problem becomes visible. Re-teaching the named topic without checking that is the most common way chemistry tutoring money gets wasted in this market.

The data booklet treated as a skill

Chemistry's booklet carries bond enthalpies, electrode potentials, pKa values and spectroscopic correlation tables. Navigating it under time pressure is trainable and examined, and students who quote remembered approximations instead of booklet values lose accuracy marks for no reason at all.

Mechanisms before memorisation

A student who understands four or five organic mechanisms can generate most of the reaction list and recognise an unfamiliar reaction. A student memorising the list faces an ever-growing one. We teach the smaller thing, which is also the harder thing to teach and the reason specialists cost more.

A written boundary on the investigation

We ask questions, teach uncertainty and graph technique and give feedback on the student's own draft. We do not design the experiment, process the data or write any part of the report. That is written down before work starts, because under IB rules the consequence of crossing it falls on the student.

Every figure attributed and checkable

Each AED range on this page names the provider that published it and the month it was read, so you can verify it yourself. We publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor count, because we cannot attach a sample size, a date and a method to any of them.

No accreditation claims

IB Gram holds no approval, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no premises in the UAE. We name the regulators and explain what they do; we do not imply any of them endorses us, and nor should anyone else in this market.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bur Dubai: your questions answered

Why does my child struggle with organic chemistry but seem fine elsewhere?+

Usually because of method rather than ability. Treating organic chemistry as a list of reactions to memorise produces an ever-growing list that nobody retains. Understanding four or five mechanisms - nucleophilic substitution by its two pathways, elimination, electrophilic addition - lets a student generate most of that list and recognise a reaction they have never seen. At Higher Level the mechanisms are examined directly with curly arrows, marked precisely on where each arrow starts and ends. The shift from memorising to mechanism typically takes four to six sessions.

What is the single most useful thing to check before hiring a chemistry tutor?+

Whether your child can do the mole chain without thinking. Ask three questions out loud: moles from a mass, moles from a concentration and volume, moles from a gas volume. Watch for hesitation, for reaching for a remembered triangle rather than stating a relationship, and for cubic centimetre conversions going the wrong way. If any of those shows up, that is where tutoring should start regardless of which topic the report names, because energetics, equilibrium, titration and electrochemistry all run through it.

How are the IB chemistry papers weighted?+

Paper 1, which combines a multiple-choice section with a data-based section, carries 36 per cent. Paper 2, extended response, carries 44 per cent. The Scientific Investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent and is submitted at a school deadline months before the papers. That split matters for planning: the investigation is the component a DP1 student can still influence most cheaply, and a DP2 student in the spring term has 80 per cent of the grade left in the papers and nothing available in the other 20.

Why are sign errors so costly in IB chemistry energetics?+

Because the arithmetic can be entirely correct and the answer still wrong. An exothermic enthalpy change is negative; a Hess cycle step run in reverse reverses its sign; a calorimetry calculation uses the mass of the solution rather than of the solute. Each of those is a simple idea that fails under time pressure. The fix is mechanical rather than conceptual: draw the cycle, arrow every step, write each signed value next to its arrow, and state in words whether the process is exothermic before writing any number.

What does the equilibrium constant actually tell you?+

The position of equilibrium - how far a reaction proceeds - and nothing about how fast it gets there. Conflating the constant with reaction rate is the most common conceptual error in the topic and it appears in most series. Two further points students lose marks on: concentrations rather than amounts in moles go into the expression, which matters whenever the volume is not one cubic decimetre, and only a change in temperature alters the value of the constant. Changing concentration or pressure shifts the position without changing the constant.

Why is Higher Level acid-base chemistry so much harder than Standard Level?+

Because it becomes applied mathematics. Logarithms appear in pH, in pKa and pKb, and in buffer calculations, and a student uncomfortable with logarithms in mathematics will struggle here for mathematical reasons rather than chemical ones. The asymmetry matters: pH from a known concentration is routine, while concentration from a pH needs an inverse logarithm that students fumble under pressure. Weak acid calculations also require an approximation, and there are marks available specifically for stating it rather than silently using it.

What should my child do about the chemistry investigation before going near a laboratory?+

Answer four questions on paper. What exactly will be measured, with which instrument, to what resolution, and is the expected change large enough to be distinguished from that instrument's uncertainty? Then: how many values across what range, and how many repeats at each. The characteristic chemistry design failure is a dependent variable that cannot be measured precisely enough with school apparatus - a colour judged by eye, a mass change below the balance resolution - and no analysis rescues data whose uncertainty swamps the effect.

How many marks does the chemistry Evaluation criterion give away?+

More than any other part of the investigation, because students write generic lists. More repeats, human error, better equipment - none of those score. What scores is a limitation specific to what actually happened, an explanation of the direction in which it would skew the result, and a realistic change that would address it. The marks are there for specificity. Keeping notes during data collection rather than reconstructing problems from memory afterwards is what makes a specific evaluation possible, and it costs nothing.

Does my child need separate IGCSE chemistry to cope with Diploma chemistry?+

No, but it changes the first term. Students from separate IGCSE chemistry - Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 - arrive having already met mole calculations and volumetric work. Students from a coordinated or combined award often have not, and the gap shows immediately in DP1. Neither route is a barrier. Which one your child took predicts the first term's difficulty better than their IGCSE grade does, and it is worth telling a tutor at the outset so the opening sessions are aimed correctly.

Do you send a chemistry tutor to our home in Bur Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Every lesson for a Bur Dubai family is one-to-one over live video, stated before you pay. For chemistry the format suits the work: a Hess cycle or a three-row equilibrium layout is best annotated on a shared surface and saved, and the data booklet can be open on the same screen. The stronger argument is supply - a Higher Level chemistry specialist free at 5pm and living near Al Mankhool is an unlikely pairing.

How much does an IB chemistry tutor cost in Dubai in dirhams?+

Figures read in October 2026 from each provider's own pages: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IB from AED 200; Bestimate's Dubai table places specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above; TutorChase publishes AED 270; BartyED sits at AED 650. In-home visits including travel run AED 180 to 350 at Bestimate and up to AED 500 with independent tutors. These are market rates and not our prices. Ask any provider whether the rate is per hour or per lesson.

Is a premium chemistry tutor worth the extra dirhams?+

It depends on the task. For the mole chain, energetics and content teaching, the mid band is sufficient - this is competent instruction of well-defined material and prestige adds nothing measurable. For investigation design and for reading a script to rank where marks are leaking, the specialist band earns its premium, because those are judgement skills rather than knowledge. For the final fortnight of past-paper practice, nothing in the market is worth a premium, because that work belongs to the student and no tutor can do it for them.

Can a tutor give my child IB chemistry past papers and mark schemes?+

We do not host or redistribute them. IB, Cambridge and Pearson papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides are copyright material, and reproducing them is somebody else's intellectual property rather than ours to share. We reference them, cite the official source and link out. In practice your child's chemistry teacher can usually supply past papers directly, and that is the right route. Any tutoring site offering a download library of official papers is taking a risk a family does not need to be part of.

Do some tutoring services really offer to produce a finished internal assessment?+

Some do advertise it, and one provider in this market sells completed internal assessments outright. It is an academic honesty breach under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student who submits the work, not on the service that produced it - potentially the loss of the diploma. We teach, question and give feedback on the student's own draft, and we do not design the experiment, process the data or write any part of the report. That boundary is written down before any investigation work begins.

Can a tutoring company be KHDA approved?+

A training institute with premises in Dubai can hold a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which involves initial approval, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. That is a specific authorisation for a specific kind of business. IB Gram does not hold one, has no premises in the UAE, and is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Ask anyone claiming otherwise for the permit number.

How long does it take to fix a chemistry calculation problem?+

Four to eight sessions for the mole chain to become automatic, which is the usual root cause. The work is deliberately spread across topics rather than within one: the same chain practised in a thermochemistry question, then a gas question, then a titration, so the student stops seeing them as different problems. Progress is checked against past-paper questions from several topics rather than one, because a student who can do the chain in a familiar context and not an unfamiliar one has not yet got it. Then the block ends.

Start with the chain, not the topic

Before you buy any chemistry tutoring, spend ten minutes on the mole diagnostic: three conversions, talked through out loud. If any of them is slow or uncertain, that is where the hours should go, whatever the report card names. If the chain is secure and the marks are still leaking, send us a marked script and we will tell you where from. Either way, the free trial lesson costs nothing - one hour with the tutor you would continue with, spent on a real multi-step past-paper question or on an investigation research question, with a written note of what was found. All lessons for Bur Dubai families are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.
