IGCSE Science Tutor in Bur Dubai

An IGCSE science tutor in Bur Dubai is usually brought in after a decision that was made a year earlier. Triple award, double award or single award changes how many grades your child leaves with and which sixth-form routes stay open, and parents in Bur Dubai, Karama and Al Mankhool compare schools without ever comparing that. We teach one-to-one over live video, starting from which award is actually in play.

IB & IGCSE in Bur Dubai

Three different qualifications, one word on the report

Ask five families in Bur Dubai what IGCSE science their child is taking and you will get five answers that all sound the same and are not. One child is sitting three separate sciences and will leave with three IGCSE grades. One is sitting a double award and will leave with two grades covering all three disciplines. One is sitting a single combined award and will leave with one. The content, the number of papers, the depth and - most importantly - which sixth-form and university routes remain available afterwards differ sharply between them. The word science on a school report does not distinguish any of this.

That matters for tutoring in the most practical way. A tutor asked to help with IGCSE physics who assumes separate Cambridge physics while the student is sitting coordinated sciences will set the wrong past papers, teach content that is not on the student's syllabus, and skip content that is. In a twelve-week run-in that is not a minor inefficiency; it is most of the programme. The first question in any useful first session is the syllabus code, and it is printed on the exam entry slip or available from the science department in one email.

The decision itself usually happened in Year 9, when option choices were made, and it is often made on timetable logistics rather than on where the child is heading. A student intending medicine or engineering generally wants the separate sciences, because the double and single awards cover all three disciplines in less depth and some A Level and Diploma Higher Level courses assume the separate route. A student heading for humanities or business may be better served by a double award and an extra subject elsewhere. Neither is wrong; what is wrong is not knowing which one is in play.

Bur Dubai parents also compare schools constantly - against Al Mankhool, against Karama, against Oud Metha, against the Deira side of the creek - and the comparison almost never includes the science award structure. Two schools five minutes apart can offer different routes, and that difference affects a child's options at sixteen far more than a difference of one inspection band. The comparison table later on this page is the one we would want a Year 9 parent in this district to read.

On delivery: IB Gram is an online platform and for every family in the UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are a service we run only in India. For science this works, including for the practical component, because the practical papers test experimental reasoning on paper rather than manual skill in a room. And it means a Pearson double award specialist is available to a Karama family whether or not one happens to live nearby, which in this district is the argument that actually matters.

SeparateAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences - triple award

Three distinct qualifications: Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625, or Pearson International GCSE Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1. Each has its own papers and its own grade, and each goes deeper than any coordinated route. This is the standard expectation for a student heading towards Higher Level sciences in the Diploma or towards medicine and engineering at A Level.

Separate sciences occupy three option blocks in a Dubai timetable that also has to carry mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies. That pressure is the usual reason a school steers a student towards a coordinated route, and it is worth understanding the trade before accepting it.

DoubleAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Coordinated or double award science

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 or Pearson Science Double Award 4SD0. All three disciplines are covered and two IGCSE grades are awarded, in less depth than the separate route and in fewer option blocks. Perfectly respectable and widely accepted, but it is not identical to the separate sciences and some sixth-form courses treat it differently. Ask the school what it opens and closes before Year 10 starts.

Double award is common in the Bur Dubai and Al Mankhool school cluster precisely because it frees a timetable block. Students who later decide on a Higher Level science in the Diploma can usually still take it, but they arrive with less depth and the first DP1 term is harder. Plan for that rather than discover it.

SingleAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined or single award science

Cambridge Combined Science 0653 or Pearson Science Single Award 4SS0. All three disciplines in one qualification and one grade, in the least depth. A sensible choice where science is not the direction of travel and the timetable is needed elsewhere, and a restrictive one if a science Higher Level or an A Level science is later wanted. The restriction is the thing to be explicit about.

Where a single award has been taken and a science Diploma subject is now wanted, the honest answer is that there is a real gap to close and it is measured in months rather than weeks. We will say that rather than sell a short block that cannot do it.

DPAges 16-19

What comes next: the Diploma or A Level

Diploma sciences at Standard or Higher Level, or A Level sciences, both of which assume a quantitative foundation. The transition is smoothest from separate sciences, manageable from a double award, and demanding from a single award. In all three cases the gap that bites is mathematical - rearranging equations, handling units, reading gradients - rather than content recall.

Dubai students moving from IGCSE into Diploma sciences frequently report the new subject as hard when the actual difficulty is the mathematics inside it. Two or three sessions on algebraic technique at the start of DP1 is the cheapest intervention available and it serves all three sciences at once.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a science tutor should be working on, split by discipline and by the skills that cut across all three. The failure modes differ by subject more than families expect.

Biology - recall and precision

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The content volume is the largest of the three and the marks go to precision of language rather than to understanding. Describing osmosis without naming a partially permeable membrane, or enzyme action without naming the active site, scores nothing. Biology rewards learning the exact wording the mark scheme expects, which is a different study habit from the one physics needs.

Biology - the long explain questions

Extended and Higher

Six-mark questions on topics such as transport in plants, the nervous system or inheritance want a sequence of distinct creditable points, not a flowing paragraph. Students who write beautifully and score three marks are usually making four points where six were available. Explicit practice on point-per-mark structure moves this quickly.

Chemistry - the mole and the equation

Extended and Higher

Relative formula mass, moles, concentration and reacting-mass calculations, plus balancing equations and writing ionic ones. This is the quantitative spine of IGCSE chemistry and it carries marks across many topics. A student shaky here looks broken in several places at once, which is why it should be diagnosed before any topic is re-taught.

Chemistry - qualitative analysis and tests

Core and Extended

Ion tests, gas tests, flame colours and precipitate colours, which are pure memorisation and therefore pure available marks. Students lose them by half-learning: knowing a precipitate is white without knowing which three cations give one. A single session with a well-organised table fixes this and it recurs in every series.

Physics - formula rearrangement

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The single most common source of lost physics marks at IGCSE is algebra, not physics. Rearranging a formula with the unknown in the denominator, converting units before substituting, and keeping track of prefixes such as kilo, milli and micro. This is mathematics teaching inside a physics lesson and it is where a short block should start.

Physics - electricity and circuits

Core and Extended

Series and parallel behaviour, potential dividers, and the discipline of drawing a circuit before reasoning about it. Students who try to reason about a parallel branch without redrawing it get it wrong consistently. Electricity is the topic Bur Dubai families name most often and it responds well to a mechanical procedure.

Experimental and practical reasoning

All routes

Identifying independent, dependent and controlled variables, suggesting improvements, judging reliability, reading a measuring instrument correctly and spotting anomalous results. Examined in Cambridge's practical or alternative-to-practical paper and inside Pearson's written papers. It is reasoning on paper, which is why it can be taught entirely online.

Graphs, tables and calculations

All routes

Choosing axes, plotting accurately, drawing a line of best fit, calculating a gradient and stating what it physically represents, and processing a results table. Shared across all three sciences and routinely taught in none of them properly. A fortnight of deliberate work here pays in biology, chemistry and physics simultaneously.

Command words

All routes

State, describe, explain, calculate, suggest, compare, evaluate - each with a defined expected response. Describe asks what happens; explain asks why; suggest expects application to an unfamiliar context. Students who answer every question with everything they know lose marks for the wrong kind of answer rather than for a wrong answer.

Significant figures and units

All routes

Giving an answer to a justified number of figures and with the correct unit. Marks are lost here on nearly every paper and they are the cheapest marks in science to recover. Ten minutes of attention per session, consistently, removes the problem inside a month.

Required practicals and apparatus

All routes

The standard experiments a syllabus expects familiarity with, described and reasoned about rather than performed. Questions ask what apparatus would be used, how a variable would be controlled, and what would be improved. Reading a method critically is the skill, and it transfers between the three disciplines.

Mathematical skills inside science

All routes

Standard form, percentages, ratio, proportionality, rearranging and substituting. Science papers assume these and do not teach them. A student who is behind in mathematics will appear to be behind in science, and the cheapest fix is to treat it as a mathematics problem rather than a science one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of IGCSE science support. The right one depends on whether you are choosing an award, repairing a discipline, or counting weeks to a paper.

The Year 9 option conversation

A single session, sometimes two, spent on the award decision rather than on teaching: what triple, double and single award each cover, how many grades each yields, which sixth-form routes each supports, and what the school is actually offering. It is the cheapest hour available in the whole two years and it is the one families most often skip.

  • Award structures laid out with their downstream consequences
  • The school's own offer checked against what the student wants at sixteen
  • A list of questions to take to the science department
  • No teaching, no commitment, one session

Single-discipline repair

A short block on the one science that is dragging, started from a marked script rather than from a topic list. In practice this is most often physics - and most often the algebra inside physics rather than the physics itself - or the quantitative half of chemistry. Two to six sessions with an explicit end point.

  • Starts from the student's own marked paper and the mark scheme
  • Diagnoses whether the problem is science or mathematics
  • Checked against past-paper questions on the same area
  • Delivered online, one-to-one, over live video

The run-in to the series

A programme counted backwards from the June or November paper, driven by a diagnostic timed paper rather than by syllabus coverage. Three disciplines cannot all be revised in eight weeks, so the work is ranked by marks lost, and the final fortnight is technique and command words with nothing new introduced.

  • Diagnostic full paper in week one, marked against the real scheme
  • Two or three highest-cost areas taught, in order of cost
  • Graphs, significant figures and units drilled throughout
  • Correct series and syllabus code confirmed with the school first

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bur Dubai

01

Triple, double or single: what the award actually decides

The award structure is the most consequential decision in IGCSE science and it is routinely made on timetable grounds. Three separate sciences occupy three option blocks and yield three grades. A coordinated or double award covers all three disciplines in two blocks and yields two grades. A combined or single award does it in one block and yields one. Nobody announces this as a decision about a child's options at sixteen, but that is what it is.

The practical consequence sits downstream. A student heading for Diploma Higher Level biology, chemistry or physics, or for A Level sciences, is on the smoothest path from the separate sciences, because the depth is already there. From a double award the path is manageable and the first DP1 term is harder, because the same content was covered in less depth and the quantitative work is lighter. From a single award the gap is real and measured in months. None of these routes is a wall, and we will not pretend a short tutoring block closes the single-award gap when it cannot.

There is a second consequence that families in Bur Dubai raise more than any other: how many science grades appear on the certificate. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. A student with three separate sciences has three of the five from science alone; a single-award student has one. That is not a reason to choose by itself, but it is arithmetic worth seeing before Year 10.

The question to ask the school is narrow and answerable: which award is my child entered for, how many IGCSE grades will it produce, and does this school's sixth form - or the schools we might apply to - accept it for the science courses we have in mind? Any science department can answer all three in a short meeting. Almost no family asks.

Bur Dubai against the districts next door, school by school

Families in this part of Dubai compare neighbourhoods seriously, and the comparison usually runs on fees, inspection band and commute. For IGCSE science specifically, the variable that matters most is which award structure a school offers and by which board, because that is what changes a child's position at sixteen. Two schools a five-minute drive apart can differ on it.

The Bur Dubai, Al Mankhool and Oud Metha cluster is heavily British and Indian curriculum, and it contains the widest mix of award structures in Old Dubai. Across the creek in Al Garhoud and Al Mamzar the IB presence is denser, and students there more often take a coordinated route feeding into the Diploma. Out towards Al Qusais and Al Nahda, the Indian-curriculum schools lean towards separate sciences. The commute, not the teaching, is what differs most between a Karama address and a Bur Dubai one.

Here is the conclusion that surprises people, and it is the honest one: once you have established the award and the board, the tutoring shortlist is identical from any of these addresses. A Pearson double award specialist is the same specialist whether the student lives in Karama, Bur Dubai, Oud Metha or Al Nahda, because the examination is identical and the teaching is delivered over video. The neighbourhood changes the school and the journey. It does not change which syllabus codes need teaching or who can teach them.

What the neighbourhood does change is the hour. Oud Metha and Al Mankhool households can realistically hold a 4pm or 4.30pm start. Karama is usually workable by five. Deira-side and Al Nahda families are better served after six, and during Ramadan all of these shift. Choosing the session time against the worst realistic commute rather than the best one is the single most useful local decision a family makes, and it has nothing to do with who is nearby.

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel for the same science

Two boards dominate IGCSE science in Dubai and they examine the same disciplines differently. A tutor who does not know which board is in play will set the wrong past papers, and in science that is more damaging than in most subjects because the paper structures differ substantially rather than cosmetically.

Cambridge separate sciences - Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620, Physics 0625 - run a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper, and then a practical component which the school chooses: either a laboratory practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper. Which of those two your child's school enters matters, because they are prepared for differently: the alternative-to-practical paper tests experimental reasoning entirely on paper, while the practical test requires performance in a laboratory. A parent can and should ask which one is entered.

Pearson International GCSE sciences - Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1, Physics 4PH1 - take a different approach. There is no separate practical examination; practical and investigative skills are assessed inside the written papers. Pearson physics runs a longer first paper and a shorter second, with the first carrying the larger share of the marks. For a student, the implication is that experimental reasoning questions arrive mixed into theory papers rather than isolated in one, and revision has to treat them as part of normal preparation.

Grade scales add a final layer of confusion in Dubai households. Pearson International GCSE reports on the 9 to 1 scale. Cambridge reports A* to G on some syllabuses and 9 to 1 on others depending on the school's choice. A parent comparing one child's 7 with another's B is not comparing like with like, and a tutor should establish both the scale and the tier before making any claim about where a student stands.

04

The practical component, and how it is examined without a laboratory

  • Most examined practical skill is experimental reasoning on paper
  • Ask whether the school enters the Cambridge practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper
  • Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers
  • Experimental questions belong in ordinary past-paper practice, not a separate late block

This is the question parents ask most when they hear that lessons are online, and it deserves a direct answer. The practical skills examined at IGCSE are, in the main, reasoning skills assessed on paper. Identifying the independent, dependent and controlled variables. Reading a measuring instrument to the right precision. Spotting an anomalous result and saying what should be done about it. Judging whether a method would give reliable data and proposing a specific improvement. Drawing and interpreting a graph. None of those require a student to be standing in a laboratory while they are being taught.

Where a school enters the Cambridge practical test rather than the alternative-to-practical paper, there is a genuine manual element, and that is school work: the apparatus, the technique and the rehearsal happen in the school laboratory with the school's teacher. We do not pretend otherwise and we do not offer to replace it. What a tutor can add even for a practical-test candidate is the reasoning around the technique - why a step is taken, what would go wrong if it were skipped, what the result should look like - which is exactly what the written parts of the assessment reward.

For Pearson candidates the issue mostly dissolves, because practical and investigative skills are examined within the written papers. Experimental questions appear alongside theory, and students who have treated them as a separate category to revise later tend to meet them unprepared. The right approach is to work experimental questions continuously as part of ordinary past-paper practice rather than saving them for a block at the end.

A note on what we will not supply. We do not publish, reproduce or distribute Cambridge or Pearson past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or syllabus documents. We reference them, cite the official source and link out, because reproducing them is someone else's copyright. Your child's science department can usually provide past papers directly, and that is the correct route.

05

Three disciplines, three different places the marks go

Treating science as one subject is the commonest tutoring mistake at this level. The three disciplines fail differently, and a student can be losing marks in biology for reasons that have nothing in common with why they are losing them in physics. A tutor who applies the same approach to all three will fix one and leave two.

Biology is a precision-of-language subject with a large content volume. Marks go on naming the right structure, using the right term, and making one creditable point per mark in extended answers. A student who understands osmosis perfectly and does not say partially permeable membrane scores nothing. The study habit biology needs is learning exact wording, which is quite different from problem-solving.

Chemistry splits in two. The descriptive half - reactivity, tests, bonding, the periodic table - behaves like biology and rewards precise recall, with ion and gas tests being pure available marks that students half-learn. The quantitative half - formula mass, moles, concentration, reacting masses - behaves like mathematics, and weakness there surfaces in several topics at once. Diagnose which half is the problem before teaching either.

Physics is the one most often misdiagnosed. The overwhelming majority of IGCSE physics marks lost in this district are lost to algebra and units, not to physics: a formula rearranged wrongly when the unknown sits in the denominator, a prefix such as milli or kilo not converted before substituting, an answer given without a unit. Families report that their child cannot do physics when their child cannot yet rearrange an equation under time pressure. It is cheaper and faster to fix as mathematics, and the improvement shows across every topic at once.

What IGCSE science tuition costs across these districts

Here is the part of the comparison where neighbourhood genuinely does affect the number, and it is not in the direction families expect. The teaching rate does not vary by district. What varies is the travel premium attached to an in-home arrangement, and in Old Dubai that premium buys a drive across the creek rather than better science.

Market figures, each attributed and read in October 2026. At the budget end, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, which buys homework supervision rather than examination coaching. A qualified subject tutor online is published by Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table places IGCSE, IB and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and BartyED sits at AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors. Monthly packages run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, and Bestimate estimates a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to 600 monthly at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work.

Three sciences multiply this, which is the budgeting trap specific to IGCSE science. A family taking separate sciences and buying tutoring in all three at a mid-market rate is committing to three times the monthly figure, and that is rarely necessary. In our experience one discipline is usually doing the damage and a second is fine, and a diagnostic paper in each identifies which within two sessions. Buying three standing hours before diagnosing is the most common way money is wasted on this subject in this district.

None of these figures are IB Gram prices; we publish no rate card on a landing page. We hold no office or centre in the UAE, and we are not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, Cambridge International, Pearson or anyone else. Two questions for any provider, including us: is the rate per hour or per lesson, and what happens if you stop after one session.

The in-home question, and why the answer is the same in Karama as in Bur Dubai

Parents here ask for a home tutor for sensible reasons: visibility, no journey, and a younger sibling who cannot be left. Those arguments are real, and they are the same arguments on both sides of the creek.

Our position, stated before payment rather than after: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. Every lesson for a family in Bur Dubai, Karama, Al Mankhool or Oud Metha is one-to-one over live video. We state it because two providers ranking for these searches route UAE parents to overseas numbers without disclosing where the tutor actually sits, and that is something a family should know before paying.

The reason the answer comes out the same from every address in Old Dubai is that the thing you are buying does not vary by postcode. A Cambridge 0654 coordinated sciences specialist, or a teacher who can read a Pearson 4PH1 script and rank where marks are leaking, is defined by the syllabus rather than by geography. Insisting on physical proximity narrows the pool to whoever is nearby and free, and for a specific code and tier that often means accepting a generalist. From Karama or from Bur Dubai, the specialist pool online is the same pool and it is much larger.

What the online format adds for science specifically is the shared surface. A results table, a graph being plotted, a circuit being redrawn, a mark scheme and the student's own attempt can all be on screen together, annotated and saved for the next session. Three sheets of paper across a table cannot do that and they leave with the tutor. And the hour holds: in a twelve-week run-in across three disciplines, a session lost to a blocked creek crossing is a real cost, and it is a cost that only exists in the travel-based model.

The sector was 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula, with UK curriculum at 37 per cent of pupils and Indian at 26 per cent. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no private school fee increase for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package, valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools - four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate - creating 16,846 new places.

On equivalency, which is what makes the number of science grades matter: for the Ministry of Education's British track, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. One ranking competitor publishes a six-subject requirement; the sourced figure is five. Verify your own case through the Ministry's own channel - we describe the process and neither perform nor guarantee it, and tutoring is not required for it.

Alongside the international curriculum, Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, under KHDA requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and KHDA advises a minimum of 25 minutes for any mandatory subject lesson. Those hours are part of why three separate sciences is a heavy timetable in a Dubai school and why coordinated routes are common here.

On permits, the position is checkable by any parent. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and states a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no official fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

Where we tutor

Bur Dubai against the districts next door

Families here compare neighbourhoods constantly. For IGCSE science the differences that matter are which award structure the local schools offer and how long the afternoon journey takes - not the quality of science teaching available online.

Bur Dubai

Dense flats, several large schools within reach, and the widest mix of award structures in this set. Parents here often have one child on a double award and another on separate sciences without having noticed the difference.

Al Mankhool

Immediately west with its own school cluster, often reachable on foot. The practical advantage is scheduling: households here can genuinely hold a 4pm session, which is rare across Old Dubai.

Karama

A few minutes inland, apartments throughout, shared study space the norm. The schools serving Karama families are largely the same ones serving Bur Dubai, which is exactly why the tutoring shortlist comes out identical.

Oud Metha

Inside the school belt, with several large schools walking distance away and the shortest commutes here. Earliest session slots are usable, which is the one genuine scheduling edge in this part of the city.

Al Mamzar and Al Garhoud

Across the creek, with the nearest concentrated IB provision and a different mix of boards. Students here are more likely to be on a coordinated route feeding into the Diploma than on three separate sciences.

Deira

The north bank, with an unpredictable five o'clock crossing in either direction. Deira and Bur Dubai families end up making the same decision about tutoring for the same reason: travel is the unreliable part.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A large British and Indian curriculum belt towards Sharjah, heavy on separate sciences at the Indian-curriculum schools. The longest commutes in this set, so sessions here generally work best after six.

Al Jaffiliya and Satwa

Between Bur Dubai and Jumeirah with short runs to two clusters. Mixed boards within single households is common, which makes the weekly timetable rather than the tutor's address the binding constraint.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Bur Dubai

Bur Dubai, Al Mankhool and Oud Metha

The closest cluster and the densest British and Indian curriculum provision in Old Dubai. Award structures vary between schools five minutes apart, which is the single most useful thing a Year 9 parent in this district can check and the thing least often compared.

  • The Indian High School, Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • Dubai English Speaking School

Karama, Al Garhoud and Deira

Across and around the creek, with the nearest IB provision and a different board mix. Students from this cluster more often follow a coordinated route into the Diploma, and the practical paper route differs between the schools here.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Indian Academy, Dubai
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A large belt of British and Indian curriculum schools stretching towards Sharjah, with separate sciences more common at the Indian-curriculum schools. Useful context for a Bur Dubai family comparing options across the city rather than across the street.

  • Westminster School, Dubai
  • The Millennium School, Dubai
  • GEMS Legacy School
  • New Indian Model School, Dubai

Schools are named purely as local education-market context. IB Gram has no affiliation with, partnership with, or endorsement from any school listed here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the award and the code in writing

Ask the science department which award your child is entered for - separate, coordinated or combined - which board, which syllabus codes, which tier and, for Cambridge, whether the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper is entered. Five short answers that change everything a tutor should do.

  2. 02

Diagnose all three, then buy one

Before committing to three standing hours, run a diagnostic paper in each discipline. Usually one is doing the damage and the others are fine. Buying tutoring in three sciences without diagnosing is the commonest way money is wasted on this subject in this district.

  3. 03

A free trial, on the right paper

One session at no cost with the tutor you would continue with, worked on a past-paper question from the correct syllabus code and marked against the real scheme. You get a written note of where the marks actually went, whether or not you book anything further.

  4. 04

Separate the science from the mathematics

If the diagnosis is physics, the next question is whether the problem is physics or algebra. In this district it is usually algebra, and treating it as a mathematics problem is faster, cheaper and improves every physics topic at once rather than one.

  5. 05

Fix the hour against the worst commute

Al Mankhool and Oud Metha households can often hold 4pm; Karama around five; Deira-side and Al Nahda after six; and all of these shift during Ramadan, which is worth agreeing in advance. Times are Gulf Standard Time and do not move for traffic.

  6. 06

Measure with timed papers and stop

Every two to three weeks, a full paper under timed conditions in the discipline being worked, marked hard. If the mark pattern is not moving we change the tutor or the method rather than adding hours, and when the block is done we say so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We ask for the code before anything else

Separate Cambridge physics, coordinated sciences and a Pearson double award are different examinations with different papers and different practical routes. A tutor who starts teaching without establishing which one is in play will spend the hour politely and set the wrong past papers.

Three disciplines diagnosed separately

Biology fails on terminology, chemistry splits into a recall half and a calculation half, and physics usually fails on algebra. The same approach applied to all three fixes one and leaves two, which is why we diagnose each before recommending where the hours go.

Honest about the single-award gap

If a student took a combined award and now wants a science Higher Level, the gap is real and measured in months. We will say that rather than sell a short block that cannot close it. The same honesty applies to a lower-tier entry and its grade ceiling.

The same shortlist from every Old Dubai address

Once the syllabus code is known, the specialist you want is the same whether you live in Karama, Bur Dubai, Oud Metha or Al Nahda. What the district changes is the hour and the travel risk, not who can teach the paper.

Clear about where the tutor sits

Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video and we say so before payment. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE. Two providers in this market route UAE parents to overseas numbers without disclosing delivery, and we would rather lose a booking than copy that.

Figures attributed, claims absent

Every AED range here names the provider that published it and the month it was read. We publish no satisfaction percentage, star rating or tutor count, hold no office in the UAE, and claim no approval or accreditation from KHDA, Cambridge International or Pearson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bur Dubai: your questions answered

What is the difference between triple, double and single award IGCSE science?+

They are three different qualifications. Separate or triple award means three distinct syllabuses and three IGCSE grades - Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625, or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 - with the most depth. Coordinated or double award, such as Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SD0, covers all three disciplines across two grades in less depth and fewer timetable blocks. Combined or single award, Cambridge 0653 or Pearson 4SS0, gives one grade. The number of grades and the depth both affect which sixth-form science routes stay open.

Does a double award IGCSE science close off Higher Level sciences in the Diploma?+

Generally no, but it makes the first DP1 term harder. A double award covers all three disciplines in less depth than the separate route and with lighter quantitative work, so a student arriving at Higher Level biology, chemistry or physics has ground to make up rather than a wall to climb. Ask the receiving school directly what it accepts rather than assuming. From a single combined award the gap is larger and measured in months, and we will tell you that rather than sell a short block that cannot close it.

How do I find out which IGCSE science syllabus my child is actually taking?+

It is on the exam entry slip, or the science department will tell you in one email. Ask for five things: the award structure, the board, the syllabus codes, the tier, and - if it is Cambridge - whether the school enters the practical test or the alternative-to-practical written paper. Those five answers determine which past papers a tutor should use and how the practical component needs preparing. A tutor working from the wrong code teaches content that is not on your child's syllabus and skips content that is.

How is the IGCSE science practical examined if lessons are online?+

Most of what is examined is experimental reasoning on paper: identifying variables, reading instruments to the right precision, spotting anomalous results, judging reliability and proposing specific improvements, and interpreting graphs. None of that requires standing in a laboratory. Where a school enters the Cambridge practical test there is a genuine manual element, and that belongs to the school's laboratory and the school's teacher - we do not offer to replace it. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers, so experimental questions arrive mixed with theory.

Which IGCSE science does my child in Bur Dubai most likely need help with?+

Statistically, physics - and within physics, the algebra rather than the physics. The most common losses on a script in this district are a formula rearranged wrongly when the unknown sits in the denominator, a prefix such as milli or kilo not converted before substituting, and an answer without a unit. Families report that their child cannot do physics when their child cannot yet rearrange an equation under time pressure. It is faster and cheaper to treat as a mathematics problem, and the gain shows across every topic at once.

Why does my child lose biology marks when the answers look right?+

Because biology is marked on precision of language. A student who understands osmosis and does not write partially permeable membrane scores nothing for the idea. The same applies to active site in enzyme questions and to dozens of other required terms. The second recurring loss is in extended answers: a six-mark question wants six distinct creditable points, and a fluent paragraph making four of them earns four. Mark-scheme wording drills and point-per-mark structure practice usually move both within two to four sessions.

Is Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel better for IGCSE science?+

Neither is better; they examine differently and the school has already chosen. Cambridge separate sciences run a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component the school selects between a laboratory test and an alternative-to-practical written paper. Pearson has no separate practical examination and assesses those skills inside the written papers, with a longer first paper carrying more of the marks. The practical consequence is simply that past papers from one board are of limited use to a candidate on the other.

Do we need to pay for tutoring in all three sciences?+

Usually not, and buying three standing hours before diagnosing is the commonest way money is wasted on this subject here. Run a diagnostic paper in each discipline first; in most cases one is doing the damage and the others are adequate. Three disciplines at a mid-market rate triples a monthly commitment that Bestimate's Dubai estimates already put at AED 600 to 1,200 for a single weekly hour. Two sessions of diagnosis tends to save considerably more than it costs.

Does living in Karama rather than Bur Dubai change the tutoring we should buy?+

No, once the syllabus code is known. A Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SD0 specialist is defined by the examination rather than by geography, and the examination is identical from every Old Dubai address. What the neighbourhood genuinely changes is the earliest realistic session time and the travel risk attached to any in-home arrangement. Al Mankhool and Oud Metha households can often hold 4pm, Karama around five, and Deira-side or Al Nahda families usually do better after six.

Do you send a science tutor to our home in Bur Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. Every lesson for a Bur Dubai or Karama family is one-to-one over live video, stated before payment. For science the shared screen is genuinely useful: a results table, a graph being plotted, a circuit being redrawn and the mark scheme can all sit together, annotated and saved for next time. The stronger argument is supply, since a specialist in a particular code and tier need not live nearby.

What does Core and Extended mean for IGCSE science grades?+

They are tiers, and the lower tier carries a hard grade ceiling that no amount of tutoring lifts. Cambridge splits into Core and Extended; Pearson splits into Foundation and Higher. The school decides, usually for sound reasons - a student placed on a tier they cannot cope with risks coming away with nothing. The problem is that families often do not know the decision has been made. Ask in writing which tier is entered and what the ceiling is, and ask when the decision could be reviewed.

How many science IGCSEs count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five. Sciences count as subjects like any others, which is why a triple-award student has three of the five from science alone and a single-award student has one. Verify your own case through the Ministry's own channel.

When should we make the IGCSE science award decision?+

In Year 9, when option choices are made, and with the destination in mind rather than the timetable. A student aiming at Diploma Higher Level sciences or A Level sciences is best served by the separate route. A student heading for humanities or business is often better off with a double award and a stronger subject elsewhere. Ask the science department which award is offered, how many grades it produces, and whether the sixth forms you might apply to accept it for the courses you have in mind.

Which IGCSE science series do students in Dubai sit?+

The June and November series. Cambridge runs June as the main series with November as the resit route for UAE centres, and Pearson International GCSE is available in May/June and November. The February and March series that appears in online searches is offered to India only and does not apply here. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for that zone, so take the timetable from your school rather than from a search result.

Can a tutor supply official science past papers and mark schemes?+

We do not host or redistribute them. Cambridge and Pearson papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and syllabus documents are copyright material belonging to the boards, and reproducing them is not ours to do. We reference them, cite the official source and link out. In practice your child's science department can usually supply past papers directly, and that is the right route. Any tutoring site offering a download library of official papers is taking a risk a family has no need to share in.

What should we ask for after the science mocks?+

The scripts for all three disciplines, not just the grades. Mocks usually use real past papers, so the losses on those scripts are the losses likely to recur in the series. With three scripts in hand, a first tutoring session can establish which discipline is actually costing the most and whether the losses are content, terminology, algebra or command words. Without them, the first hour goes on establishing what the department already knew in December, which is an expensive way to start.

Five answers from the science department, then decide

Award structure, board, syllabus codes, tier and - for Cambridge - which practical route. Those five answers cost one email and they determine everything a tutor should do, as well as how many grades your child will leave Year 11 with. Once you have them, run a diagnostic paper in each discipline before committing to anything, because usually one science is doing the damage. The free trial lesson is a good place to do that: one hour, no cost, with the tutor you would continue with, worked on a real question from the correct code and marked against the official scheme. All lessons for Bur Dubai and Karama families are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
