IB Maths Tutor in Bur Dubai

An IB maths tutor in Bur Dubai is usually brought in for one of four reasons: the wrong route was chosen, Higher Level has outrun the student, the exploration has stalled, or Paper 1 keeps costing method marks. This page separates those four problems, because they need different work. It covers Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation, what each paper is worth, the exploration criteria by letter, and the route UAE universities expect. Lessons are delivered live online.

IB & IGCSE in Bur Dubai

Four different problems that all look like needing a maths tutor

IB mathematics generates more tutoring requests in Dubai than any other Diploma subject, and the requests arrive sounding identical. A parent says their child is struggling with maths and needs help before the May session. Underneath that sentence there are four quite different problems, and treating them as one is why families sometimes buy twenty sessions and see no grade movement.

The first problem is route. A student placed in Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level who should be in Applications and Interpretation will work twice as hard for a lower grade, and the decision is usually made in Year 11 on the basis of an IGCSE or MYP result rather than on what the course actually demands. That is not fixed by tutoring; it is fixed by a conversation with the school, and the window for it is narrow.

The second is content pace. Higher Level in either route moves faster than any IGCSE or MYP course, and students who reached a grade 8 or a level 7 by memorising procedures hit the wall somewhere in the calculus. The third is the exploration, the internally assessed piece worth 20 per cent of the grade, which stalls on topic choice far more often than on mathematics. The fourth is technique: a student who understands the content and still loses method marks, misreads command terms, or runs out of time on Paper 1.

Those four need different interventions, and the first job of any tutor is to work out which one you have. A marked past paper and a look at the exploration draft settles it in ninety minutes. The rest of this page sets out what each problem looks like in detail: the route comparison, what each paper assesses and is worth, where marks leave the paper topic by topic, the exploration criteria letter by letter, and what the Dubai market charges.

On delivery, we are direct about it. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE — a tutor at the door is a service we run only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video. For mathematics specifically that works better than a dining table: the student's attempt, the mark scheme and the tutor's working can share one screen, the whiteboard is saved, and the session is recorded so a worked solution can be replayed rather than half-remembered. It also means a Bur Dubai student is matched to someone who has taught Higher Level calculus rather than to whoever teaches maths nearby.

One more thing worth saying before the detail. Bur Dubai families are often weighing a tutor against a group revision course, and the two solve different problems: a course covers content at a fixed pace for everyone in the room, while one-to-one work exists to find the specific thing costing this student marks and fix it. If the diagnostic says the problem is pace, a course may genuinely be the better buy, and we will say so.

At a glance

  • Route, pace, exploration and technique are four separate problems with four different fixes
  • The exploration carries 20 per cent of the mathematics grade in both routes and at both levels
  • Graphic display calculator skill is assessed, so practice must use the student's own model
  • IB exam and results dates are set by the IB; confirm every one with your Diploma coordinator
  • Market rates for qualified online subject tutors in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Bur Dubai students arrive at IB mathematics from three directions, and the preparation gap differs sharply depending on which. These are the stages that feed Diploma mathematics in this district.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria out of 8 each: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Standard and extended routes exist in the final years. There is no timed external paper unless the school enters students for eAssessment, which is precisely why the transition into Diploma assessment catches students out.

In Old Dubai the MYP-to-Diploma step is the most common source of Higher Level distress. A student with level 7s in MYP mathematics may never have sat a two-hour timed paper under mark-scheme conditions, and the first DP1 assessment arrives as a shock. Eight to twelve weeks of technique work early in DP1 is the efficient fix.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Mathematics as the entry route

Cambridge 0580 Extended, 0607 International Mathematics or Pearson 4MA1 Higher are the usual feeders. Students who also took Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics arrive with differentiation and harder algebra already met, and they start Higher Level considerably more comfortably than those who did not.

Several Old Dubai schools run IGCSE then split into A Level or the Diploma, so a Bur Dubai family often chooses between the two in Year 11. For Higher Level Analysis and Approaches, an Extended or Higher tier grade in the top bands plus Additional Mathematics is a far better predictor than a strong Core grade.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Two routes, each at Higher and Standard Level, each with written papers and one internally assessed exploration worth 20 per cent. Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebraic fluency, calculus and proof. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology. Both are respected; they suit different students and different degree intentions.

Dubai schools sit the May session, with November functioning mainly as a resit route in this hemisphere. The exploration deadline is set by your school rather than by the IB, usually in DP2 with a draft date months earlier, and that internal date is the one a tutoring plan has to work back from.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme mathematics components

Where a student takes a Diploma mathematics course inside the Career-related Programme, the subject teaching and the exploration rules are identical to DP. The difference is the surrounding load rather than the mathematics, which means subject tutoring works exactly the same way.

Very few Dubai schools licence the Career-related Programme, so most Old Dubai families meet it only while researching alternatives to a full Diploma. If your child is on it, confirm which mathematics course and level the school offers inside it before planning anything.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics requests from Bur Dubai are specific, and so are the failure points. Each entry below names a part of the course and what reliably goes wrong in it.

Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

The heaviest mathematics in the Diploma. Calculus to a depth no IGCSE course approaches, proof by induction and contradiction, complex numbers, and vectors. Marks leave on unwritten method lines, on differentiation of composite functions, and on integration techniques chosen by trial rather than by recognition of the form.

Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

Algebraic fluency, functions, sequences, basic calculus and probability. The usual weakness is algebra carried in from Year 11: a student who cannot rearrange confidently will lose marks across every topic regardless of how well they understand the new content sitting on top of it.

Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Modelling, statistics, matrices, graph theory and Voronoi diagrams, with heavy technology use. The late topics unsettle students who coasted through the earlier modelling work. Marks go on interpreting calculator output in context rather than on obtaining it.

Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Statistics, financial mathematics, modelling and geometry. Often chosen as the lighter option and then underestimated: the statistics component rewards careful interpretation and precise language, and students who treat it as arithmetic sit in the middle bands.

Calculus

HL and SL in both routes

Differentiation and integration, with HL extending into techniques, kinematics and differential equations. The commonest HL failure is integration by substitution attempted without recognising the form, which burns ten minutes and earns nothing. Chain rule errors inside a longer question cascade through every subsequent mark.

Algebra, functions and proof

HL and SL, Analysis route

Sequences, logarithms, binomial expansion, and at HL proof by induction and contradiction. Proof questions are the most teachable marks in the course because they follow a fixed structure, and they are also the ones students most often leave blank.

Statistics and probability

HL and SL in both routes

Distributions, hypothesis testing and regression, weighted much more heavily in the Applications route. Students lose marks stating a conclusion without reference to the significance level, and on confusing correlation with a causal claim in an interpretation question.

Trigonometry and geometry

HL and SL in both routes

Identities, equations and, at HL in Analysis, compound angle work. Solving trigonometric equations over a given domain is a reliable source of lost marks because students find one solution and stop, missing the others the question wanted.

Vectors and matrices

HL, route-dependent

Vectors in Analysis HL, matrices and graph theory in Applications HL. Both arrive late in DP2 and compete with revision for everything else, which is why a planned block in Term 1 of DP2 is worth more than extra hours in April.

Graphic display calculator technique

All routes and levels

An assessed skill, not a convenience. Students lose marks by producing a correct value and failing to state what they did, by using the wrong mode, and by not knowing the shortcuts for intersections, solvers and distributions. Practice must be on the student's own model to be worth anything.

The mathematical exploration

All routes and levels

A 12-to-20-page internally assessed investigation worth 20 per cent of the grade, marked against five criteria. It stalls on topic choice: too broad and there is no mathematics, too narrow and there is nothing to explore. A tutor may coach the question and the method and must not write any of it.

Theory of Knowledge links in mathematics

Core

Mathematics supplies some of the most usable Theory of Knowledge material in the Diploma, from the status of proof to the limits of modelling. Students who notice this early find the Theory of Knowledge essay substantially easier to write than those who look only at the humanities.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

IB mathematics work in this district takes three shapes, and which one you need follows directly from which of the four problems you actually have.

Weekly content work through DP1

One hour a week keeping pace with the school's teaching, working the hard examples before the class moves on. This is the format that prevents the DP2 rescue engagement, and it is the cheapest route across two years. It suits a student who is following the course but losing ground in the calculus or the algebra underneath it.

  • Follows the school's own order of teaching rather than a generic sequence
  • Algebraic weaknesses carried from Year 11 identified and fixed early
  • Calculator technique taught on the student's own model from the first session
  • Short written note after each session naming the specific weakness

Paper-technique block before mocks or May

Two sessions a week for six to eight weeks on the papers rather than the content. Method marks, command terms, pacing, calculator shortcuts, and the recurring question shapes in that route and level. Opens with a full timed paper and closes with another for a like-for-like comparison.

  • Diagnostic paper marked against the official scheme, broken down by topic
  • Separate work on the calculator paper and the non-calculator paper
  • Weekly timed section to rebuild pacing before the real thing
  • A defined stop date instead of an open-ended arrangement

Exploration coaching, scheduled backwards from the school's draft date

Three to six sessions attached to the internally assessed exploration. The work is topic choice, the mathematical process, the criteria, and feedback on drafts the student has written. Nothing is drafted, rewritten or produced for them, and we state that plainly because buying coursework puts the whole Diploma at risk.

  • Topic and mathematical aim agreed before any writing begins
  • Feedback given against each criterion by letter
  • Session dates set back from your school's own draft deadline
  • The tutor teaches and reviews; the student writes every word

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Bur Dubai

01

What an IB maths tutor in Bur Dubai is actually being asked to fix

  • Route error needs the school, not a tutor, and the window is narrow
  • Content pace needs weekly work alongside the teaching, not a late block
  • Exploration problems are usually topic-choice problems
  • Technique problems show up on one marked past paper

An IB maths tutor working one-to-one online in the Dubai market costs roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, and a tutor travelling to a Bur Dubai address is quoted at roughly AED 200 to 500 with the drive included. Before spending either, it is worth establishing which of four problems you have, because the same hourly rate buys very different value depending on the answer.

Route error is the first and the most expensive to leave alone. A student in Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level who needed Applications and Interpretation will grind through two years for a grade below what they could have had elsewhere. Schools place students in Year 11, often from one set of results, and the deadline for moving is early. If this is your problem, the first action is a meeting with the school and not a tutoring contract.

Content pace is the second, and it is what tutoring is genuinely good at. Higher Level mathematics moves faster than anything in IGCSE or MYP, and students who got strong results by learning procedures run out of procedures somewhere in the calculus. Weekly work alongside the teaching fixes this; blocks in April do not, because by then the content is behind them and the gap has compounded.

The third is the exploration and the fourth is technique, and both are short, targeted engagements rather than long ones. The exploration stalls on topic choice, which three sessions can settle. Technique is method marks, command terms and pacing, which a marked paper exposes in an hour. Diagnosing which problem is in front of you is therefore the single highest-value thing the first session does, and ours is free.

02

Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation

This is the decision that shapes two years, and it is made on thin evidence more often than it should be. Both routes are full IB mathematics courses, both are available at Higher and Standard Level, and both are accepted for university entry in most subjects. They are not interchangeable in content or in what they demand of a student, and the difference is not simply that one is harder.

Analysis and Approaches rewards algebraic fluency and abstraction. It carries proof at Higher Level, deeper calculus, and a general expectation that a student can manipulate symbols confidently without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation rewards modelling, statistical reasoning and the disciplined use of technology, and its Higher Level content includes matrices, graph theory and Voronoi diagrams that Analysis students never see.

The honest selection signal is prior attainment in algebra rather than overall mathematics grades. A student who found Cambridge 0580 Extended algebra or MYP criterion A straightforward will cope with Analysis. A student who was strong in mathematics but relied on context and on a calculator is usually better served by Applications, and will frequently achieve a higher grade there while learning more.

Where this interacts with university plans, check specific requirements rather than assuming. Some engineering, physics and economics programmes state Analysis or its equivalent; many others accept either route; several UAE universities publish their own requirements that differ from the UK pattern families often assume. Check the published entry requirements for the actual programme and the actual intake year, because departmental practice changes.

03

The papers, what each assesses and where the marks go

Students revise topics. Examiners set papers. The gap between those two statements explains a large share of disappointing results, because a student can know every topic and still lose twenty marks to paper-specific habits. Knowing what each component asks for changes how revision is organised.

At Higher Level both routes sit three written papers plus the exploration; at Standard Level, two papers plus the exploration. One paper is sat without a calculator in the Analysis route, which makes algebraic fluency directly assessable, and the Applications route leans on technology throughout. The exploration is worth 20 per cent in every route and at both levels, which makes it the single largest component a student has direct control over.

The table sets out what each component rewards and where marks reliably leave. The pattern across all of them is method. IB mark schemes award method marks generously and students routinely forfeit them by writing only answers, particularly on calculator papers where the working feels redundant. Showing the substitution, naming the rule applied, and stating what the calculator was asked to do converts several marks per paper.

Confirm the current component structure and weightings against your school's own subject documentation, because the IB revises course guides and this page is an orientation rather than a specification. Published IB exam and results dates should come from your Diploma coordinator or from the IB directly; we do not publish them here because they could not be verified from the source for this project.

04

Where marks actually leave an IB maths paper, topic by topic

  • Diagnose from a marked timed paper, never from the student's own ranking of difficulty
  • Method marks are the largest recoverable block on every IB maths paper
  • A single accuracy convention, applied consistently, earns marks in every topic
  • Proof questions at Higher Level follow a fixed structure and are highly teachable

Ask a Diploma student which topic is costing them and they will name the one they dislike. Mark a paper against the scheme and a different list appears, usually shorter and more fixable. That is why no sensible plan starts before a full paper has been sat to time and marked properly, with losses recorded by topic and by question type.

The recurring entries on that list are consistent across Bur Dubai students. In the Analysis route: chain rule errors inside composite functions, integration attempted by trial rather than by recognising the form, trigonometric equations solved for one value in a domain that wanted three, and proof questions left blank despite following a fixed structure. In the Applications route: statistical conclusions stated without reference to a significance level, regression treated as causation, and calculator results quoted without the method.

Common to both and to every level is accuracy discipline. Rounding applied partway through a multi-step calculation produces an answer that is almost right, and almost right scores nothing on the final mark while often still earning the method. Students who adopt a single convention — carry full accuracy, round once at the end, state the rounding — pick up marks across every paper without learning any new mathematics.

The practical consequence is that short targeted blocks outperform long general ones. Thirty marks lost across chain rule, integration recognition and trigonometric domains is four sessions of work with a measurable result. The same hours spread across the full syllabus mostly revisit topics the student was already scoring on, which is why the second marked paper matters as much as the first.

05

The mathematical exploration, criterion by criterion

The exploration is worth 20 per cent of the mathematics grade and it is the component a student controls most directly. It is also where Bur Dubai families most often ask for help, usually about six weeks before a school draft deadline, which is the most expensive moment to start. The marks are decided by the topic and the aim, both of which are settled in the first week.

Five criteria are assessed by letter, and students who have read them score better than students who have not — which sounds obvious and is routinely skipped. The commonest failure is a topic with no mathematics in it: a survey, a set of statistics copied from a website, and a conclusion. The second commonest is the reverse, a topic whose mathematics the student cannot actually carry, which produces a report describing somebody else's work.

A tutor's legitimate role here is well defined and worth stating precisely. A tutor may explain each criterion and what it rewards, help the student narrow a topic into a workable mathematical aim, discuss method and the mathematics required, read a draft the student has written and say where it loses marks against the criteria, and teach citation convention. A tutor may not write any part of it, rewrite paragraphs, supply a dataset, or produce a plan so detailed that the student is transcribing.

That line matters commercially as well as ethically in this market. One operator found in this search results page sells completed Internal Assessments at around AED 3,750. Buying one is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student: a withheld grade, or the Diploma itself. No agency carries that risk on a candidate's behalf, whatever it implies.

THE MATHEMATICAL EXPLORATION — WHAT EACH CRITERION REWARDS
CriterionWhat it assessesWhere students lose itWhat a tutor may legitimately do

What IB maths tutoring costs in Dubai, and what you can verify yourself

Every figure in this section is checkable, which is the point of publishing it. A parent can open each source and read the rate, which is more than can be said for most pages ranking for this search: three of the six measured for this project publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars to families who transact in dirhams.

At the bottom of the market, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. That band buys supervised study rather than Higher Level mathematics teaching, and for a Diploma student it is rarely the right purchase. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase publishes AED 270. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 and upwards, in-home visits at AED 180 to 350, and home tutors generally at AED 200 to 500. The highest published figure found in this market is AED 650 at a premium named-tutor agency.

Monthly, Bestimate estimates a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to 600 for budget tutoring, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Packages seen in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Higher Level mathematics sits towards the specialist end of that spread for a straightforward reason: the number of people who can teach it well is smaller than the number who advertise it.

None of these are IB Gram prices. They are what the Dubai market charges, each attributed, and they are here so a parent can calibrate a quote before accepting it. Our own arrangement starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation about which of the four problems described at the top of this page you are actually dealing with.

An in-home maths tutor in Bur Dubai against one-to-one online

Mathematics is the subject where parents most often want somebody in the room, and the instinct is understandable: working through a problem on paper feels like it needs a shared table. In practice a shared screen does the same job and leaves a record, which matters more in mathematics than in any other subject because a worked solution is only useful if it can be revisited.

The arithmetic of the two options in this district is straightforward. In-home visits in Dubai are quoted at roughly AED 200 to 500 an hour with travel priced in; qualified online subject tutors run roughly AED 150 to 300. The travel premium over a twenty-session Higher Level block is a four-figure sum, and it buys proximity rather than calculus expertise. It also narrows the pool to whoever can reach Al Mankhool or Karama before 7pm, which for Higher Level Analysis is a short list.

Timing compounds this. An in-home session in Old Dubai rarely starts before 6pm because of the tutor's own commute, and mathematics at 7.30pm after a full school day and Arabic homework is not where a student does their best thinking. An online session can run at 4.30pm. Across an eight-week block the difference between alert and tired work is larger than any difference in teaching style.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, and the table below is the case for why we think that is the right side of the trade for a Diploma mathematics student in this district. For a younger child who will not begin work without an adult present, the honest answer is different and we will say so.

KHDA, the timetable and what else is competing for the hours

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are timetabled in every Dubai private school
  • Arab and non-Arab streams are taught separately by KHDA requirement
  • Mandatory-subject content cannot be substituted without Ministry of Education permission
  • Published KHDA reports comment at department level and are free to read

A Diploma student's week is fuller than the subject list suggests, and a mathematics plan that ignores this fails. Dubai private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described by u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, and KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum.

Those requirements occupy real timetable hours. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, advises that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes, and requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes for both groups prohibited. Material for those subjects cannot be substituted without prior Ministry of Education permission.

Add Creativity, Activity, Service, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and five other subjects' internal assessments, and the hours available for mathematics practice are finite. The useful response is to be honest about the budget. Two hours of mathematics practice a week, done properly, beats five hours nominally scheduled and half-attended, and a plan built around what the student will actually do holds up better than one built around what they should.

Reading your school's published KHDA inspection report is also worth twenty minutes before buying anything. The reports comment at department level, so if mathematics attainment is flagged as weaker than other subjects you have learned something specific about where the problem starts — and whether a tutor is addressing a teaching gap or a student one.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Bur Dubai

These are the Old Dubai areas Bur Dubai maths students live in and travel through. The constraint they share is time in the afternoon rather than access to a mathematics teacher.

Al Mankhool

Schools within walking distance, so a 4pm maths session is realistic. Mathematics is best taught when a student is alert, which makes that hour unusually valuable here.

Karama

Shared study space is normal, and mathematics needs a surface for working on paper. Fifty focused minutes with a desk and headphones beats ninety distracted ones.

Oud Metha

Sports-club commitments fix several weekday evenings, so Diploma maths work often lands at 7pm or at weekends. Planning around the activity timetable works better than fighting it.

Al Garhoud

Several Diploma-running schools, so a substantial share of Bur Dubai's IB maths students study here. The creek crossing pushes realistic session start times past 5pm.

Al Jaddaf

An IB continuum school nearby, so students here often arrive in DP1 straight from MYP. That is the group most likely to need technique work rather than content teaching.

Deira

Heavy afternoon congestion. For a DP2 student working three evenings a week on mathematics, removing the tutor's commute recovers more usable study time than anything else available.

Al Qusais

The longest commutes in Old Dubai. Students here benefit most from a session that starts the moment they are home rather than when a tutor arrives.

Al Mamzar

The northern edge of the district, where in-home quotes from a New Dubai base are least competitive and the specialist pool reachable by car is smallest.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the route, the level and the symptom

Analysis or Applications, Higher or Standard, and which of the four problems it feels like: route, pace, exploration or technique. Those three facts determine the match, and getting them wrong is why some families cycle through tutors.

  2. 02

    Free trial lesson spent diagnosing

The first session costs nothing and is used to work a real past paper or look at the exploration draft. You get a written breakdown of losses by topic afterwards, whether or not you continue with us.

  3. 03

A ranked plan with a comparison point

The plan names the three topics carrying the most marks, the order to work them, and the date we sit another paper and compare. For an exploration engagement it names the school's draft deadline and works backwards from it.

  4. 04

    Weekly sessions, calculator in hand

Sessions run one-to-one over live video around the real Bur Dubai school run and activity timetable. Calculator technique is taught on the student's own model by screen share, and the whiteboard is saved so worked solutions can be replayed.

  5. 05

    Compare, then continue or stop

At the agreed point you see a second marked paper against the first. If the error list has not shortened we change the tutor or the approach; if the topic is fixed we say so and finish rather than extending by default.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Route and level matched properly

Analysis HL, Analysis SL, Applications HL and Applications SL are four different courses, and we match on which one your child is actually sitting rather than on the word mathematics.

Method marks taught as a discipline

The largest recoverable block on any IB mathematics paper is method, and most students have never been shown precisely what a mark scheme expects to see written down. It is teachable in a handful of sessions.

Exploration coaching with a stated line

We explain the criteria, coach the topic and the method, and give feedback on the student's own drafts. We do not write, rewrite or supply material, and we say so on the page because the opposite is sold openly in this market.

Calculator technique on the student's own model

Graphic display calculator skill is assessed. Teaching it by screen share on the device the student will actually take into the exam is the only version of that lesson worth running.

Rates published and attributed

Every dirham figure here names who published it and when. A parent can open the sources and calibrate any quote they receive, including ours.

No accreditation claimed

IB Gram holds no IB, KHDA or Ministry of Education approval and claims none. In a market where those words are used loosely, saying so plainly is the more useful signal.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Bur Dubai: your questions answered

Should my child in Bur Dubai take IB Maths Analysis or Applications?+

The honest selection signal is prior attainment in algebra rather than in mathematics generally. A student who handled Cambridge 0580 Extended algebra or MYP criterion A comfortably will cope with Analysis and Approaches, which rewards symbol fluency, calculus and proof. A student who was strong in context and data but leaned on a calculator usually achieves more in Applications and Interpretation, which is a full mathematics course and not a soft option. Check the published entry requirements for the specific degree programme and intake year, because some engineering and physics courses name Analysis and many others accept either.

How much of the IB maths grade does the exploration carry?+

Twenty per cent, in both routes and at both levels, which makes it the largest single component a student controls directly. It is also the one most often left until six weeks before a school draft deadline, which is the most expensive point to start. The marks are largely decided in the first week by the topic and the mathematical aim: too broad and there is no mathematics in it, too narrow and there is nothing to explore. Three sessions early are worth more than ten late.

Can a tutor work on the exploration with my child without it becoming malpractice?+

Yes, within a defined boundary. A tutor may explain what each of the five criteria rewards, help narrow a topic into a workable mathematical aim, discuss the mathematics and the method required, read a draft the student wrote and say where it loses marks, and teach citation convention. A tutor may not write or rewrite any part of it, supply a dataset, or hand over a plan detailed enough that the student is transcribing. One operator in this market sells completed internal assessments at around AED 3,750; that is malpractice and the student carries the consequence.

Why does my child understand the maths but still lose marks?+

Almost always method and accuracy rather than understanding. IB mark schemes award method generously and students forfeit those marks by writing answers without working, particularly on calculator papers where the working feels redundant. The other recurring loss is rounding applied partway through a multi-step calculation, which produces an answer that is almost right and scores nothing. Adopting one convention — carry full accuracy, round once at the end, state the rounding — and writing the substitution and the rule applied converts several marks per paper without learning new mathematics.

Is Higher Level Analysis much harder than Standard Level?+

Substantially, and the gap is in depth rather than breadth. Higher Level adds a third written paper, proof by induction and contradiction, complex numbers, vectors and considerably harder calculus, and it expects confident algebraic manipulation without a calculator. Students who reached strong IGCSE or MYP results by learning procedures tend to meet the limit of that approach in the calculus. The practical implication is that Higher Level needs weekly work from early in DP1 rather than a block in DP2, because the content compounds.

My child came from MYP and is lost in DP1 maths. What actually needs fixing?+

Usually exam technique rather than content. MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria in school-set tasks, often with no timed external paper, so a student with level 7s may never have sat a two-hour paper under mark-scheme conditions. The gaps that show up are showing method, working to time, reading command terms, and algebraic fluency without a calculator. Eight to twelve weeks of focused technique work early in DP1 generally resets this, and it is far cheaper than the rescue block families buy in DP2 instead.

How many sessions a week does Higher Level IB maths usually need?+

One a week through DP1, kept up consistently, with a short intensive block before mocks if the paper work needs it. Two a week from the start is rarely the right answer, because each session generates two or three hours of practice and a student who cannot service that is paying for the same topics twice. The exception is a student arriving from MYP who needs technique rebuilt, where two shorter sessions a week for eight weeks sets up the remainder of the course properly.

Does the graphic display calculator really need teaching?+

Yes, because its use is assessed rather than incidental. Students lose marks by producing a correct value and never stating what they asked the calculator to do, by working in the wrong mode, and by not knowing the shortcuts for intersections, solvers, regression and distributions. The teaching has to happen on the student's own model, since menus differ, and screen-sharing that model is more practical than looking over a shoulder. In the Applications route it is central to the whole assessment rather than a convenience.

Do you send an IB maths tutor to our home in Bur Dubai?+

No. Home visits are a service we run only in India, and every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For Diploma mathematics that is the better arrangement in this district: a travelling tutor cannot usually start before 6pm, which is the worst time of day to attempt calculus, and the pool narrows to whoever can reach your street. Online, worked solutions are saved and replayable, calculator technique can be screen-shared on your child's own model, and the match is made on route and level.

What does Higher Level maths tutoring cost in the Dubai market?+

Higher Level sits towards the specialist end of the published range because the pool of people who teach it well is small. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai figures put specialists at AED 200 to 450 an hour and upwards, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Unitors quotes IB tuition from AED 200. Monthly, a weekly specialist hour in an exam year is estimated at AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more. Those are market figures rather than IB Gram prices; our own arrangement begins with a free trial lesson and a diagnosis.

Is it too late to start IB maths tutoring eight weeks before the papers?+

Not for technique, and probably too late for content. Eight weeks can fix method marks, accuracy discipline, pacing, calculator shortcuts and two or three specific topics, which together are often worth a grade boundary. What eight weeks cannot do is teach two years of Higher Level calculus or rescue an exploration already submitted and moderated. Establish which of those you are dealing with in the first session, from a marked timed paper, rather than buying a block and discovering it in week five.

Which maths topics cost Bur Dubai Diploma students the most marks?+

In the Analysis route: chain rule errors inside composite functions, integration attempted by trial rather than by recognising the form, trigonometric equations solved for one value where the domain wanted several, and proof questions left blank even though they follow a fixed structure. In the Applications route: statistical conclusions stated without reference to the significance level, regression treated as a causal claim, and calculator output quoted with no statement of method. Accuracy discipline costs marks in both, at every level.

Can one tutor handle both IB maths and IB physics for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. The quantitative overlap is real: kinematics, graph interpretation, logarithmic scales and uncertainty handling appear in both. What matters is whether the tutor has actually taught both syllabuses at the level required, because Higher Level physics is not a mathematics course with context added. Where one person covers both well it saves scheduling and lets the quantitative skills be taught once; where they do not, two specialists on consecutive slots is the better arrangement.

When will my child in Dubai sit the IB maths papers?+

Dubai schools sit the May session, with November functioning mainly as a resit route in this hemisphere. We do not publish specific IB exam or results dates anywhere on this site, because the IB's own site could not be verified as a source for this project and a wrong date is worse than no date. Confirm the exact window, the results date and any enquiry-upon-results deadline with your school's Diploma coordinator or directly with the IB before planning travel, revision blocks or anything else around them.

Start by naming which problem it is

Route, pace, exploration or technique — the four reasons a Bur Dubai family looks for an IB maths tutor need four different plans, and the first session should establish which one you have rather than selling you a package. Tell us the route and level, send a recent marked piece of work, and the free trial lesson is spent working through a real paper. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, around the actual school run, with calculator technique taught on your child's own model and every worked solution saved.
