IB MYP Tutor in Palm Jumeirah

Looking for an IB MYP tutor in Palm Jumeirah usually means a parent has read a report full of criterion letters and numbers out of eight and cannot tell whether their child is doing well. The honest position is that the pool of tutors who can read that report is far smaller than the pool who teach IGCSE or the Diploma, and searching within driving distance of the island shrinks it further. IB Gram teaches the MYP one-to-one over live video, criterion by criterion.

  • Tutors who mark against MYP criteria A to D, not against a percentage
  • All eight MYP subject groups, including Design and Individuals and Societies
  • One free trial lesson, one subject, before any paid block is booked
  • Personal Project coached as process; the work stays the student's own

IB & IGCSE in Palm Jumeirah

The report says criterion B, level 4. What does a parent do with that?

MYP reporting is unlike anything most parents have seen. There is no percentage, no class rank and often no exam. Instead each subject is assessed against four criteria lettered A to D, each one marked from one to eight, and the levels are awarded by best fit against published descriptors rather than by adding up right answers. A report that reads Sciences: A 6, B 4, C 5, D 7 is precise and informative, and it is almost impossible to act on unless you know what criterion B in Sciences is for.

That is the real problem behind a search for an IB MYP tutor in Palm Jumeirah. The question is not whether somebody can teach science to a thirteen-year-old. Plenty of people can. The question is whether they can look at a level 4 in inquiring and designing and tell you that your child wrote a method without identifying control variables, which is why the level sat in the middle band, and that two tasks of deliberate practice would move it. That is a different skill, and in this market it is a scarce one.

Scarcity is the honest answer to the proximity part of the question too. Dubai has a large tutoring market built around IGCSE and the Diploma, because those are the qualifications parents panic about. The MYP sits between them, has no public exam in most schools, and is consequently served by tutors who know the subject but not the marking. Now add geography. Palm Jumeirah has no secondary school, so your child commutes off the island each day and comes back across the Trunk between 15:45 and 16:45. A search for someone who both knows MYP criteria and will drive onto a frond at 17:00 returns very few names, and the few it returns are not selected for the thing you need.

IB Gram delivers MYP support one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE and we run no centre in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For the MYP that trade is unusually favourable, because the limiting factor is not distance but expertise: there are more tutors who genuinely understand MYP Design criteria somewhere in the world than there are within a twenty-minute drive of the Palm, and your child needs one of them rather than one of the latter.

The rest of this page is written to be used rather than admired. It lists the four criteria for each of the eight subject groups, so you can read your child's report. It gives you the questions to ask a prospective tutor and what a weak answer sounds like. It explains why levels move between units, what a task-specific clarification is and why it matters, where the Personal Project boundary sits, and what changes in the jump to the Diploma. Market rates are quoted with sources and dates so you can check them yourself.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP is the middle section of a continuum, and what comes before and after it changes what support in the middle should aim at. These are the programmes a tutor working with Palm Jumeirah families is asked about, with what each one expects.

PYPAges 3-12 · PYP

IB Primary Years Programme

The inquiry-led primary programme that feeds the MYP in continuum schools. PYP reporting is descriptive rather than levelled, so the arrival of criterion letters and levels out of eight in MYP 1 is the first time many families meet IB assessment language. Students who come from PYP are usually comfortable with inquiry and less comfortable with being marked against a published descriptor.

Several Dubai continuum schools run PYP through to Year 6 and then MYP from Year 7, which in practice means a change of campus or building as well as a change of programme. For Palm Jumeirah families that often changes the commute too, because primary provision is closer to the island than the secondary campuses in Al Barsha and Al Barsha South.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups, assessed against four criteria per subject, each marked one to eight. Interdisciplinary units carry their own criteria. Service as Action runs throughout, and the Personal Project sits in the final year as a substantial independent piece with its own criteria and external moderation. MYP 4 and 5 split Mathematics into Standard and Extended.

Dubai MYP schools map MYP 1 to Year 7 and MYP 5 to Year 11, so a Palm Jumeirah student in MYP 5 is the same age as a neighbour sitting IGCSE. The two children are assessed in completely different ways in the same academic year, which is why comparing their reports across a dinner table produces more confusion than insight.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects at Higher or Standard Level, with Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Assessment switches to timed external examinations plus internal assessments marked against subject-specific criteria. The shift from four criteria out of eight to a 1-7 grade built mostly from written examinations is the single biggest change an MYP student meets.

The IB does not publish a UAE Ministry of Education equivalency points figure that this page can cite, so none appears here. The Ministry's published British-track rule is verifiable and different: five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at grade E or grade 3 or better, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. Confirm any IB figure on the Ministry's own site.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

Cambridge entries inside IB schools

Some Dubai continuum schools enter MYP 4 and 5 students for Cambridge papers alongside MYP assessment, most often Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics 0607 because it feeds both Diploma maths courses. A student in that position is being assessed two ways at once, against criteria in class and against a mark scheme in an examination hall, and the techniques differ.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable version, and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. If your child's MYP school also enters them for Cambridge papers, ask the exams officer for the zone and the syllabus codes.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP subjects are assessed by criteria rather than by content coverage, which changes what tutoring in each one looks like. These are the subject groups and the strands within them that Palm Jumeirah families ask about most.

MYP Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Four criteria: analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Levels are lost most often on criterion A, where students summarise a text instead of analysing how the writer achieves an effect. Tutoring here is close reading plus essay architecture, not vocabulary lists.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Four criteria covering listening, reading, speaking and writing, with students placed in a phase rather than a year group. A child can be in phase 2 French and phase 5 Spanish in the same timetable. Progress depends on phase-appropriate practice, so a tutor must know which phase the school has placed them in.

MYP Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria A to D: knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Criterion D is where levels are lost, because thinking critically means evaluating sources and recognising limitations rather than writing a stronger opinion. Source work is the highest-yield thing to practise.

MYP Sciences

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion B collapses when a method omits control variables; criterion C collapses when data is presented without discussing validity. Both are teachable in two or three tasks.

MYP Mathematics, Standard and Extended

MYP 4-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B rewards a student who generalises a pattern and justifies the general rule, which is a different skill from calculating correctly. Extended covers additional content and feeds Higher Level in the Diploma.

MYP Arts

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding, across visual arts, music, drama and film depending on the school. The written process journal carries real weight, and students who make strong work and document it thinly lose levels they genuinely earned in the studio.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Two of the four criteria are written rather than physical, which surprises both strong athletes and their parents. Reflection writing is the usual gap and the easiest one to close.

MYP Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating. The most under-tutored subject group in Dubai, because the marks sit in the design cycle documentation rather than in the artefact. A student with a working product and a thin design folder scores poorly and cannot see why.

MYP interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed against their own criteria, which reward disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting rather than covering two subjects side by side. Schools report at least one interdisciplinary unit a year, and students who treat it as two pieces of homework stapled together lose levels for the synthesis.

MYP Personal Project

MYP 5

An independent piece in the final MYP year with its own criteria, a process journal and a report, externally moderated by the IB. A tutor may coach planning, time management and reflective writing, and give feedback on drafts the student has written. A tutor may not produce any part of it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

MYP support is rarely a weekly hour forever. It works in short, targeted runs tied to criteria and deadlines, delivered one-to-one over live video and scheduled around the afternoon return across the Trunk.

Criterion-targeted block

Four to six sessions aimed at one criterion in one subject, chosen from the last marked task and its task-specific clarification. A student losing levels on Sciences criterion B works on method design, control variables and hypothesis wording until the next assessed task, then stops. This is the most common MYP arrangement and the one with the clearest end point.

  • Starts from the marked task and the task-specific clarification
  • Four to six sessions with a defined target criterion
  • Ends when the next assessed task shows movement
  • Avoids paying for open-ended weekly tuition in MYP 1 to 3

Personal Project supervision support

A fortnightly session through MYP 5 that holds the project to its timeline: scope, research question, process journal entries, evidence of the criteria, and the report structure. The tutor coaches the process and gives feedback on what the student has already written. No part of the project is produced by anybody else, and the school supervisor remains the formal supervisor.

  • Fortnightly rhythm rather than weekly, matched to project milestones
  • Process journal and criterion evidence reviewed, never written for the student
  • Scope narrowed early, which is where most projects fail
  • The school supervisor stays in charge of the formal process

MYP 5 to Diploma bridge

A block in the last two terms of MYP 5 aimed squarely at the change in assessment: timed written responses, command terms, examination technique and the subject-specific jump into Higher Level content. Students arrive in DP1 having already met the format, which is the part that usually costs a term of confidence rather than a term of content.

  • Timed written practice, which MYP rarely requires
  • Command terms and mark-scheme logic introduced early
  • Subject-by-subject content bridging into Higher Level
  • Runs in the final two terms of MYP 5, not in DP1

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Palm Jumeirah

01

The honest answer to is there anyone near me who knows MYP

  • The MYP specialist pool is thinner than the IGCSE and Diploma pools everywhere, not just in Dubai
  • A twenty-minute radius around a Palm frond is a very small hiring pool
  • More science teaching does not move a criterion level; criterion-specific work does
  • Lessons are online and one-to-one; home visits are an India-only service

Probably not many, and proximity is the least important part of the problem. The Dubai tutoring market is built around the qualifications that frighten parents: IGCSE at 16 and the Diploma at 18. Both end in public examinations, both have published past papers, and both therefore attract tutors in volume. The Middle Years Programme ends in examinations at only some schools, publishes no past-paper bank in the same sense, and is assessed by criteria that take real effort to learn. The result is a thinner specialist pool, in Dubai as elsewhere.

Then there is the island. Palm Jumeirah has no secondary school, which means every MYP student here commutes off the Palm in the morning and back across the Trunk in the afternoon. Draw a twenty-minute driving radius around a mid-frond address at 17:00 and you have defined a very small set of people. Intersect that set with people who can tell you what criterion C in MYP Design rewards, and you may have defined an empty one.

So the sensible move is to stop optimising for distance and start optimising for the thing that is actually scarce. A tutor who has taught MYP Sciences and marked against inquiring and designing can look at your child's level 4 and name the specific omission. A tutor who has only taught IGCSE science will teach your child more science, which is pleasant and will not move the criterion. One of those is worth paying for and the other is a well-intentioned waste of a Tuesday evening.

That is the case for online delivery here, and it is a practical case rather than a philosophical one. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and nothing on this site will promise a tutor at a UAE address. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, which is what makes it possible to put a genuine MYP Design specialist in front of a thirteen-year-old living on a frond, rather than whoever was available and willing to drive.

02

The four criteria, subject group by subject group

This table is the single most useful thing on this page, and no competitor page in this market publishes it. Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked from one to eight, and the criteria are named differently in each subject group. Knowing the names turns a report from a row of numbers into a diagnosis. A level 4 in Sciences criterion B and a level 4 in Individuals and Societies criterion B mean entirely different things, and no amount of general revision addresses either.

Levels are awarded by best fit against published descriptors, which are grouped into bands rather than assigned per mark. That is why a strong piece of work can sit in the same band as a slightly weaker one and why the same student can move between bands from one unit to the next. It also means the route to a higher level is to meet the descriptor's demands explicitly rather than to write more, which is the single most common misunderstanding in MYP families.

Schools are required to issue task-specific clarifications: a version of the generic descriptors rewritten for the particular task your child was set. That document is the answer key to the mark. If you have a report with low levels and no clarification sheet, ask the subject teacher for it, because it tells you and any tutor exactly what the level 7 to 8 band wanted on that task.

Read the last column as the practical consequence. In most subject groups, one or two of the four criteria carry the written, procedural skills that are easiest to improve quickly, and those are where a short block of tutoring returns the most. Content knowledge usually sits in criterion A and is the part school teaching already handles.

03

Ten minutes of questions that identify a real MYP tutor

You do not need to understand the programme to test somebody on it. You need four questions and the patience to listen to the shape of the answers. A tutor who works in the MYP answers in criterion language without being prompted. A tutor who teaches subjects and has read about the MYP answers in content language and tries to move the conversation to topics, textbooks and past papers.

Ask the questions on the phone or in the trial lesson, in front of your child's last report. The point is not to catch anybody out; it is to find out quickly whether the hours you are about to buy will target the thing your child is losing levels on. Most families discover the answer three months and several thousand dirhams later, which is an avoidable way to learn it.

A second signal worth watching for: a good MYP tutor asks you for the task-specific clarification before the first session, and asks which criteria were assessed in the unit rather than which topic it covered. Those two requests are hard to fake because they only occur to somebody who has marked MYP work. If a tutor does not ask for the clarification sheet, they are planning to teach the subject rather than the assessment.

One caution on credentials. Examiner status is claimed widely in this market and is rarely checkable, and nobody is approved by the IB as a tutor because the IB does not run such a scheme. No individual is KHDA approved either, since the KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued to training institutes with premises rather than to people. If somebody offers you either label, ask exactly what document they hold and who issued it.

04

Why levels move between units, and what that actually means

  • Different units assess different criteria, so levels are not directly comparable
  • Best fit means band placement, not a percentage
  • Sort a year's levels by criterion, not by subject, before buying anything
  • A weakness in criterion D often appears in four subjects at once

Parents often read a drop from a 6 to a 4 in the same subject as a collapse in effort. Usually it is neither effort nor ability. MYP units assess different criteria, so a unit that assessed criterion A and C is not comparable with one that assessed B and D. A student strong on knowledge and weak on investigation design will move between bands depending on which criteria the unit happened to carry, and the pattern across a year is more informative than any single row.

Best-fit judgement adds to the movement. Descriptors are written in bands, and a teacher places the work in the band it best matches rather than counting correct answers. Two pieces of work in the same band can look different in quality, and a piece that just reaches a band one term may just miss it the next. That is a feature of criterion-referenced assessment rather than a flaw, and it is why schools report a pattern across tasks rather than a running average.

The practical move is to collect the levels by criterion rather than by subject over a full year. Three low scores on criterion D in Individuals and Societies is a diagnosis. One low score in the autumn is noise. Most Dubai MYP schools publish criterion-level data in their reporting platform, and a parent who sorts it by criterion rather than by subject often finds that one skill, not one subject, is costing levels across three different classes.

Where that happens, the tutoring plan is a cross-subject one. A student weak on evaluating and reflecting is weak in Sciences criterion D, Individuals and Societies criterion D, PHE criterion D and Design criterion D at the same time, because the underlying skill is the same: identifying what was limited about what you did and saying so in writing. Four subjects can improve from one block of work, which is a better purchase than four separate subject tutors.

05

The MYP year by year, and where the pressure actually falls

MYP support is bought badly because families buy it on the same calendar logic as IGCSE support, and the two calendars are not alike. There is no single series to count back from in most Dubai MYP schools. Assessment arrives in units through the year, and the heavy moments are the ones nobody circles: the first assessed task in a new subject group, the first interdisciplinary unit, the Mathematics Standard-or-Extended decision, and the Personal Project in the final year.

The table below maps the five MYP years onto Dubai year groups and names the pressure point in each. It is written for a parent deciding when support is worth paying for, and the honest answer in MYP 1 to 3 is often not yet, or only in a short block when a specific criterion is clearly stuck. Open-ended weekly tuition for an eleven-year-old in the MYP is usually money that would do more work two or three years later.

MYP 4 is where that changes for most students, because the Mathematics split into Standard and Extended arrives, subject choices narrow and the work starts to look like a run-up to the Diploma. MYP 5 is the heaviest year: the Personal Project runs alongside subject units, and in schools that enter students for eAssessment or for Cambridge papers there is an external examination in the same months.

A note on eAssessment, because it varies and matters. The IB offers optional external assessment in the final MYP year, through on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios, leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Many Dubai schools do not enter students for it, and some enter for part of it. Ask your school directly, because a student sitting on-screen examinations in MYP 5 needs timed written practice a year earlier than a student who is not.

06

The Personal Project, and the line nobody should cross

  • Scope narrowed early is the single highest-value intervention
  • Process journals written retrospectively lose levels the criteria explicitly reward
  • A tutor reviews drafts the student has written; no part is produced for them
  • The school supervisor remains the formal supervisor throughout

The Personal Project is the most misunderstood thing in the MYP and the place where honest tutoring matters most. It is an independent piece in the final MYP year, built around a goal the student sets, documented in a process journal and written up in a report, assessed against its own criteria and externally moderated by the IB. It is also the piece most likely to be quietly outsourced, because it is long, unsupervised day to day, and sits in the busiest year of the programme.

Here is the boundary in plain terms. A tutor may help a student narrow an impossibly broad goal into one that can actually be achieved. A tutor may explain what the criteria reward, ask the questions that produce a usable process journal entry, review a draft the student has written and say where the evidence is thin, and hold the timeline so the project does not arrive in the last fortnight. A tutor may not write any part of the project, produce the artefact, or compose the report, and nobody at IB Gram will do any of those things.

That boundary is not squeamishness. Academic honesty breaches in the IB fall on the student, and the Personal Project is externally moderated, so a report that does not match the process journal is visible. Some providers in this market sell completed coursework outright; one advertises finished Internal Assessments at a fixed price. Buying that puts a fifteen-year-old's record at risk to save a few weeks of work, and the school supervisor remains the formal supervisor whatever anybody else does.

What actually goes wrong with Personal Projects is more mundane and more fixable. Scope is set too wide in September and never narrowed. The process journal is written retrospectively in April, which the criteria notice. Evidence of the criteria is not collected as it happens. The report describes what the student made instead of evaluating against their own success criteria. A fortnightly conversation through the year prevents all four, and it is the cheapest kind of support in the whole programme.

07

MYP 5 into DP1: what actually changes

The jump from the final MYP year into the Diploma is described in prospectuses as a natural continuation. In assessment terms it is a change of species. Criterion levels out of eight, awarded by best fit across the year, are replaced by 1-7 grades built mostly from timed external examinations sat in a single session, with internal assessments marked against subject-specific criteria that look familiar but behave differently. Students who were comfortable in MYP can find the first DP1 term unexpectedly hard without any content gap at all.

The specific shocks are predictable. Timed written examinations are rare in MYP and constant in the Diploma. Command terms in DP mark schemes are precise and consequential in a way MYP descriptors are not. Higher Level content depth in Mathematics, the sciences and Language A arrives quickly. Theory of Knowledge asks for a kind of writing nobody has required before. And the Extended Essay runs in parallel with everything else, which is the first time most students have to manage a long independent piece alongside a full timetable, Personal Project experience notwithstanding.

Mathematics is the clearest case for planning ahead. MYP Extended Mathematics is the route that keeps Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistic; MYP Standard Mathematics does not close the Diploma but makes the Higher Level version of it a genuine climb. That decision is taken in MYP 4, and families who understand the consequence at that point make a different choice from families who meet it in DP1.

The table sets out the transition subject by subject with an honest estimate of how much support typically closes each gap. These are planning figures from what students commonly need rather than a promise about any individual, and they assume the work is done in the final two terms of MYP 5 rather than in a panic in DP1. Doing it early is cheaper in both money and confidence.

What MYP tutoring costs, and how to check the figures yourself

You do not have to take any provider's word about price, including ours. Open three Dubai tutoring websites and look for a published rate. Most do not have one, which is itself informative: in a researched set of competitor pages for these queries, three of six published no price at all, and the two that did quoted US dollars, a currency no UAE family transacts in. The ones that do publish make the market visible, and the figures below are theirs, read in October 2026, with the band each one sits in.

At the budget end, online platforms advertise from AED 33 to 65 an hour, inside a published band of roughly AED 45 to 150. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300; one Dubai agency's rate card listed IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists are published at AED 200 to 450 and above, with a UK agency operating in the Gulf at AED 270 and a named-tutor service at AED 650. In-home visits across Dubai are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is in the price.

For monthly budgeting, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table estimates weekly one-hour sessions at AED 240 to 600 for budget support, AED 600 to 1,200 for mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Monthly packages seen in the market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. None of those figures is an IB Gram price and this page publishes none; ask on the consultation after the free trial lesson.

The MYP-specific point about cost is that the shape of the purchase matters more than the rate. A criterion-targeted block of four to six sessions at the specialist end of the market costs less in total than a year of weekly tuition at the budget end, and is far more likely to move a level. Set that against the fact that KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for 2026-27, so this is a decision about a block of sessions rather than a decision competing with a fee increase.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the MYP

Every private school in Dubai teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies regardless of the international curriculum it is licensed for, and KHDA's requirements had to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. For an MYP family this is not a footnote: it is several lessons a week that sit outside the eight MYP subject groups and are frequently the subject a student is actually struggling with while everybody discusses Sciences criterion B.

The rules are specific enough to be useful. KHDA requires schools to organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states plainly that combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language, with the school's licensed-curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in moral, social and cultural studies.

Two more details worth knowing. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit, allows schools to vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least twenty-five minutes. Schools must also ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, which is a credential point a parent can actually ask about at a parents' evening.

The constraint that matters for tutoring is this: for the mandatory UAE subjects, using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited. So support in Arabic or Islamic Education has to work within the school's prescribed material rather than substituting a tutor's preferred syllabus. That is a narrower job than it sounds, and it is one most tutoring providers in this market do not mention at all, which is why the Arabic grade on an MYP report so often goes unaddressed for two years.

Availability, permits and what we will not promise

  • Design, Arts and rarer Language Acquisition phases are the hardest to staff
  • MoHRE private tuition work permit: free, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No published fine schedule, so no figure is quoted here
  • No grade promises, no produced coursework, no unevidenced examiner claims

Availability is the thing no provider in this market discloses, so here it is. MYP specialists are scarcer than IGCSE or Diploma specialists, and the scarcity is worst in Design, Arts and the less commonly taught Language Acquisition phases. For those subject groups there may be no UAE-based tutor free in a given week, and the honest options are a tutor in another time zone teaching at an hour that works in Gulf Standard Time, a wait for a slot, or a straight answer that we cannot cover it. You will get the third of those if it is true.

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit, and the detail is checkable rather than vague. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page for private tutor licensing lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Anyone tutoring without that permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, no amount appears here. For families considering a teacher from their child's own school, note that Abu Dhabi professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar bar. No individual is KHDA approved: the KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued to training institutes with premises, which IB Gram does not operate in the UAE.

Three things we will not do, stated plainly because the alternative is implied everywhere else in this market. We will not promise a grade or a criterion level, because nobody can. We will not produce assessed work of any kind, including any part of a Personal Project. And we will not describe a tutor as an IB examiner unless that status can be evidenced, because the claim is common and the evidence rarely is. If you want our fees, take the free trial lesson and ask on the consultation; nothing on this page is a price list.

Where we tutor

Palm Jumeirah addresses and the MYP week

MYP assessment is spread across units all year rather than concentrated in one exam series, so the pressure points move rather than cluster. Where you live on the island decides what kind of weekly slot is realistic when a unit deadline arrives.

The Trunk and Golden Mile

Shortest afternoon return on the island, which makes a 16:30 slot genuinely usable. Helpful for MYP students, because unit deadlines arrive without warning and a short, early slot can be added in the week a task is due.

Shoreline Apartments and Marina Residences

Low door-to-car overhead on the Trunk. Families here often keep a standing short slot and use it flexibly: criterion feedback one week, interdisciplinary planning the next, Personal Project check-in the week after.

The Fronds, A to N

Villa addresses on single-entrance spine roads, so add ten to fifteen minutes to any estimate. A 17:00 start is the honest earliest, and Design folder work or a reflective write-up suits that slot better than new content.

Garden Homes and Signature Villas

Deep frond addresses with a genuinely slow last mile. Students here do better with one longer weekend session for investigation and design work than with two tired weekday slots.

The Crescent, east and west

Tunnel access twice a day and hotel traffic in the early evening. A 17:30 or 18:00 slot works; anything earlier is a scheduling fiction that collapses by the third week of term.

Oceana, Tiara and Balqis Residences

Crescent-side and mid-Trunk clusters where lift and parking time is real. Weekend mornings are the better home for Personal Project supervision sessions, which need an unhurried hour rather than a squeezed one.

Nakheel Mall, Palm Tower and The Pointe

Apartment living with the shortest practical turnaround on the island, useful in MYP 5 when Personal Project deadlines and subject units land in the same fortnight.

Al Barsha, Al Barsha South and Umm Al Sheif

Where most MYP provision in this belt actually sits, thirty to forty-five minutes out in the afternoon. Island families on this run should plan weekday slots from 17:30 and keep the heavier work for a weekend morning.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Palm Jumeirah

IB continuum schools in the Al Barsha belt

Most of the Middle Years Programme provision reachable from Palm Jumeirah sits in Al Barsha and Al Barsha South, a thirty to forty-five minute afternoon run from the island. Programme offers change between cohorts, so confirm the current MYP arrangement and eAssessment policy with the school directly.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha

The coastal belt: Umm Al Sheif, Al Safa and Jumeirah

Reached from the Palm along Jumeirah Beach Road rather than the motorway, which is shorter in kilometres and often slower in minutes. Several schools here run IB programmes alongside or instead of a British route, and some enter MYP students for Cambridge papers as well.

  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Jumeira Baccalaureate School
  • Horizon International School
  • Jumeirah College
  • Safa British School

Al Sufouh: the nearest secondary campuses

The closest secondary schools to the island, mostly British curriculum rather than IB continuum, which is why MYP families on the Palm often commute further than their IGCSE neighbours do. A twenty to thirty minute afternoon return in ordinary traffic.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Regent International School
  • Horizon English School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School

Named schools are context for families living on Palm Jumeirah. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school named here, and programme offers should be confirmed with the school or through the IB's own programme listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the report and the clarification sheet

The last report with criterion levels, and the task-specific clarification from the most recent assessed task in the subject you are worried about. Those two documents tell a tutor more in five minutes than an hour of conversation, because together they show what was asked for and what the work missed.

  2. 02

Sort the year's levels by criterion, not by subject

Before buying anything, line up a full year of levels criterion by criterion across all subjects. A pattern of low criterion D scores in Sciences, Individuals and Societies and PHE is one skill problem in three classrooms, and one block of work on evaluating and reflecting can move all three.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson on the marked task

One trial lesson, one subject, before any paid block is booked. The tutor reads your child's marked task against the descriptor with them, names what the next band wanted, and says what four to six sessions would target. You decide afterwards whether to continue.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the commute off the island

The slot is set from the time your child is actually home on your part of the Palm, not from the school bell. A Trunk address can hold 16:30, a mid-frond address 17:00, the Crescent 17:30 or later. Investigation and design work belongs in a weekend morning where there is no commute behind it.

  5. 05

Run a criterion block, then stop and check

Four to six sessions on one criterion in one subject, ending at the next assessed task. If the level moves, the block worked and you can choose another. If it did not, something in the diagnosis was wrong and more of the same will not fix it. Open-ended weekly tuition hides both outcomes.

  6. 06

Plan the DP bridge in MYP 5, not DP1

If the Diploma is the destination, the final two terms of MYP 5 are the time to introduce timed written practice, command terms and the Higher Level content step in the subjects that need it. Doing it then costs less, in money and in confidence, than discovering the format change in a DP1 October.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion marking, not subject coaching

Our tutors read your child's level against the descriptor and the task-specific clarification and name the specific omission. Teaching more of the subject is pleasant and does not move a criterion; working on what the next band explicitly asks for does.

All eight subject groups, including the awkward ones

Design and Arts are the least served subject groups in the Dubai market, because the marks sit in documentation rather than in the artefact. We cover them, and we say so plainly when a particular group has no tutor free rather than offering an approximate substitute.

Short blocks with an end point

Four to six sessions aimed at one criterion, finishing at the next assessed task. It is cheaper than a year of weekly tuition, it produces evidence of whether the diagnosis was right, and it fits a week that already contains a commute off the island.

The Personal Project boundary in writing

A tutor coaches scope, timeline, process journal habits and reflective writing, and gives feedback on drafts the student has written. No part of the project is produced for them. The school supervisor stays the formal supervisor throughout, and we put that in writing rather than leaving it implied.

Rates you can verify, with dates and sources

Every AED figure on this page is somebody else's published number, read in October 2026 and attributed, so you can check it yourself. We do not present market rates as ours and we do not hide a figure behind a form.

Availability disclosed, including when the answer is no

If no tutor covers your child's subject group and phase in a workable Gulf Standard Time slot, we will tell you that rather than offering a near-miss. Knowing before you commit is worth more than a fast yes that turns into a reschedule in week three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Palm Jumeirah: your questions answered

Does an MYP tutor need to live anywhere near Palm Jumeirah?+

No, and insisting on it works against you. There is no secondary school on Palm Jumeirah, so your child commutes off the island anyway, and the thing that is actually scarce is somebody who marks against MYP criteria rather than somebody who lives nearby. A twenty-minute driving radius around a mid-frond address at 17:00 is a very small hiring pool, and intersecting it with genuine MYP Design or Language Acquisition expertise often leaves nothing. Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one over live video, so the pool is selected for the programme rather than for the postcode.

Why are MYP tutors harder to find than IGCSE or Diploma tutors?+

Because the market follows public examinations. IGCSE at 16 and the Diploma at 18 both end in external papers with published past papers, so tutors accumulate around them. The MYP is assessed against criteria by the school, has no past-paper bank in the same sense and ends in external assessment only where a school enters students for eAssessment. The result is a thinner specialist pool everywhere, not only in Dubai, and a lot of subject tutors who are excellent at their subject and have never marked against a criterion descriptor.

What should I ask a tutor to find out whether they really know MYP?+

Four questions, with your child's last report in front of you. What is criterion C in this subject? What is a task-specific clarification, and will you ask the school for the one from the last task? How does a level out of eight become the grade on the report? Which criteria were assessed in the last unit? A tutor who works in the programme answers in criterion language and asks you for the clarification sheet unprompted. A subject tutor converts the level to a percentage and steers the conversation towards topics and past papers.

What are the four criteria in MYP Sciences called?+

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science, each marked from one to eight. In practice criterion B is where levels leak, because a method written without identifying control variables cannot reach the top band however good the science is. Criterion C goes next, usually when data is presented accurately but validity and limitations are not discussed. Both are procedural rather than conceptual, which is why two or three deliberately practised tasks often move them further than a term of content teaching.

My child got a 5 in one unit and a 3 in the next. Is that normal?+

Frequently, and it is usually not about effort. Different units assess different criteria, so a unit carrying knowing and understanding is not comparable with one carrying investigating and evaluating. Levels are also awarded by best fit against banded descriptors rather than by counting marks, so work that just reaches a band one term can just miss it the next. The informative view is a year of levels sorted by criterion rather than by subject, where a genuine pattern shows up and a single low score turns out to be noise.

What is the difference between MYP Mathematics Standard and Extended?+

Extended covers additional content and is the route that keeps Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level a realistic Diploma choice. Standard does not close the Diploma, but it makes the Higher Level version of maths a genuine climb, because DP1 moves quickly and assumes algebraic fluency. Both are assessed against the same four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The choice is usually made in MYP 4, and it is worth understanding the consequence then rather than in a DP1 October.

Does every MYP unit assess all four criteria?+

No, and assuming it does is one of the quickest ways to misread a report. Schools plan units so that criteria are covered across the year rather than in every task, and most units assess two of the four. That is why a tutor who expects all four every time has probably never seen an MYP unit plan, and why comparing two units directly tells you less than you think. Ask the subject teacher which criteria the unit assessed, then compare like with like across the year.

How does a criterion level out of eight become a report grade?+

The four criterion levels are combined and converted to a grade on the IB's published scale, and the school applies that conversion. Because the levels are awarded by best fit against banded descriptors rather than as percentages, there is no reliable way to translate a level into a mark out of a hundred, and a tutor who offers one is guessing. Your school's MYP coordinator can show you the conversion the school uses and explain how partial criterion coverage across units is handled, which is the part that confuses most parents.

Is the Personal Project something a tutor can help with?+

Within a clear boundary, yes, and it is some of the most useful support in the programme. A tutor can narrow an over-ambitious goal into an achievable one, explain what the criteria reward, ask the questions that produce usable process journal entries, review drafts the student has already written and hold the timeline so the project does not land in the final fortnight. A tutor must not produce any part of the project or its report, and nobody here will. The school supervisor remains the formal supervisor throughout.

Does my child's school enter students for MYP eAssessment, and does it matter?+

Ask the school, because practice varies and the answer changes your planning. The IB offers optional external assessment in the final MYP year, through on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios, leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Many Dubai schools do not enter students at all, and some enter for part of it. A student sitting on-screen examinations needs timed written practice a year earlier than a student who is not, because MYP teaching rarely requires writing to the clock and that is a skill rather than a knowledge gap.

What does MYP tutoring cost around Palm Jumeirah, and how can I check the figures myself?+

Published Dubai figures read in October 2026 run from AED 45 to 150 an hour at the budget end, with platforms advertising from AED 33 to 65, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to 450 or more for a specialist. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 including travel. You can verify this in twenty minutes by opening three Dubai tutoring sites and looking for a published rate; most do not have one. None of these figures is our price list, which you can ask about on the consultation.

How many MYP subjects is it sensible to tutor at the same time?+

One, almost always. The MYP runs eight subject groups, and a student already carrying that load plus mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies has very little free time to begin with. One criterion in one subject for four to six sessions produces visible movement at the next assessed task. Three subjects at once consumes the independent work time the sessions are supposed to improve. The exception is when the weakness is a single criterion appearing across several subjects, in which case one block of work moves all of them.

What should an MYP 5 student do differently in the year before the Diploma?+

Practise writing to the clock, because almost nothing in MYP requires it and almost everything in the Diploma does. Beyond that, meet DP command terms early so the precision is familiar, build algebraic fluency if Higher Level maths is the plan, and start treating recall volume as a thing to be trained rather than assumed. Students who do this in the last two terms of MYP 5 find the DP1 autumn a workload change. Students who do not often find it a confidence problem, which takes longer to repair.

Do Dubai schools have to teach Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the MYP?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for, and KHDA required its current arrangements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combined classes because the expectations and the language of instruction differ. For these subjects, using different or additional content without Ministry permission is prohibited, so tutoring must work within the school's prescribed material.

What happens if no tutor is free for my child's MYP subject group?+

You get told. Design, Arts and the less commonly taught Language Acquisition phases are the hardest to staff, and in a given week there may be no UAE-based specialist with a slot. The honest options are a tutor in another time zone teaching at an hour that works in Gulf Standard Time, waiting for a slot to open, or a straight no. We will give you the third if it is the truth, because the alternative is a near-miss match that wastes a month. No competitor in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Does a tutor working with a Palm Jumeirah family need a permit?+

Yes. The UAE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE free of charge for two years, with MoHRE's own service page listing a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without it carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any site quoting a specific amount with caution.

Read the report by criterion, then buy one block

The most useful half hour available to an MYP parent on Palm Jumeirah costs nothing: take a full year of criterion levels, sort them by criterion letter instead of by subject, and ask the teacher for the task-specific clarification from the task where the level was lowest. That almost always converts a vague worry about a subject into a specific, fixable skill, and sometimes shows the same skill costing levels in three different classrooms. Then buy one block of four to six sessions aimed at it. Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one and online, with a free trial lesson in one subject before any paid block, and the Personal Project coached as a process rather than produced for anybody.
