IB and IGCSE tutors for Palm Jumeirah families

The reason Palm Jumeirah families look for IB and IGCSE tutors is rarely that the teaching is poor. It is that a Diploma or IGCSE student carries a second workload nobody timetables: internal assessments, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay, independent revision. Palm Jumeirah children also commute off the island down a single trunk road, which compresses the evening further. IB Gram covers that gap with one-to-one lessons over live video, matched to the exact component losing marks.

  • Work planned backwards from the school's internal deadline, not the exam
  • Criterion-level targets rather than a general grade ambition
  • Lessons delivered online over live video, never a visit to a UAE address
  • Feedback on the student's own draft; the writing stays the student's

IB & IGCSE in Palm Jumeirah

The gap between what a Palm Jumeirah school teaches and what the student has to do alone

Palm Jumeirah has a well-off, internationally mobile residential population spread across the Shoreline apartments on the Trunk, the villa fronds from A through M, the Golden Mile, the Crescent hotels and residences, and the newer towers near Nakheel Mall and The Pointe. It has nurseries. It does not have a mainstream K-12 private school campus. Every school-age child on this island commutes off it, down a single trunk road, and comes back the same way in the afternoon.

That geography is the first half of the problem this page addresses. A Palm Jumeirah student at Dubai College, the American School of Dubai, GEMS Wellington International School in Al Sufouh, Dubai International Academy Al Barsha or Kings' School Dubai in Umm Suqeim is spending real time in a car or on a bus twice a day. The time available for independent study between arriving home and a reasonable bedtime is shorter here than the household income would suggest, and it is the independent study that the Diploma and IGCSE actually weigh.

The second half is the part parents discover late. A Diploma student's points do not come only from examined papers. Each of six subjects carries an internally assessed component marked by the teacher against published criteria and moderated by the IB. On top of that sit the Extended Essay at 4,000 words, the Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and the CAS portfolio. None of these are taught in the way a syllabus topic is taught. They are set, explained, and then substantially self-managed across two years.

IGCSE students face a smaller version of the same thing. The examined content is taught thoroughly in most of the schools this island feeds. What is not taught, in any meaningful sense, is how to revise nine subjects simultaneously, how to read a mark scheme, how to allocate forty-five minutes across a paper, and how to notice that a practice answer earned four marks out of seven for reasons that are visible in the mark scheme. Students are told to revise. Very few are taught how.

This is why the most common request we get from Palm Jumeirah households is not content teaching. It is a specialist to work on one named component: a Chemistry internal assessment that needs a controllable research question, a mathematics exploration that has no mathematics in it yet, an Extended Essay with a research question too broad to answer in 4,000 words, or a set of mock scripts that need reading against the mark scheme line by line.

Everything on this page is delivered as one-to-one tuition over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE; home visits are a service we provide only in India. For a family on the Palm, the practical consequence is that nobody has to drive down the Trunk twice more in an evening, and the student gets a specialist in the specific component rather than a generalist who happens to live on the island.

At a glance

  • No mainstream K-12 campus sits on Palm Jumeirah; every student commutes off the island
  • A single trunk road compresses the usable study window in the evening
  • Diploma points depend heavily on components nobody timetables
  • IGCSE revision technique is assumed rather than taught in most schools
  • Requests here are usually component-specific rather than subject-wide
  • All lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Each programme loads independent work differently, and knowing which load falls where tells you when support is worth buying. These are the four we are asked about from Palm Jumeirah addresses.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects at three Higher and three Standard Levels plus three core elements. Every subject carries internally assessed work marked against published criteria and moderated externally. The core adds the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and CAS. Roughly a fifth to a quarter of a typical subject grade sits in work the student produces outside taught lessons.

UAE schools sit the May session, so the crunch for a Palm Jumeirah student falls across the preceding November to February window when internal deadlines for coursework converge with mock examinations. Confirm every IB date with your child's Diploma coordinator rather than taking a published date second-hand, because the IB is the only authoritative source for its own calendar.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Nine or ten subjects examined at the end of Year 11, with some boards and subjects carrying coursework or practical components. The independent load is not coursework but revision: a Year 11 student has to manage a revision programme across nine subjects, which is a planning skill nobody assesses and few schools teach explicitly.

Cambridge allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative timetable zones and states that the correct version of the timetable for the zone must be used, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the exams officer for your centre's timetable rather than a generic one.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight. The MYP's own self-managed piece is the Personal Project in MYP 5, which asks a student to set a goal, keep a process journal and produce a report. For most students it is the first time they have been assessed on managing a project rather than on knowing content.

For students heading into the Diploma, the Personal Project is the single best predictor of how the Extended Essay will go. A student who left the Personal Project to the last fortnight will do the same with the Extended Essay unless something changes, and that is a scheduling habit that can be taught.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level and AS Level

Three or four subjects in depth with no core requirement, which removes the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge load. The independent demand is different rather than absent: A Level depth assumes wide reading and self-directed problem practice well beyond what is set in lessons.

On the UAE equivalency route for British-curriculum students, one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade of no less than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, is required alongside five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count. Check the current requirement on the authority's own page.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects Palm Jumeirah families most often ask about, described by where the independent component sits rather than by syllabus content alone.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL · IGCSE 0620 and 4CH1

The Diploma scientific investigation is where most Chemistry marks are lost outside the papers. Students pick research questions that cannot be controlled with school equipment, then write an evaluation that lists limitations without weighing them. Narrowing the question early is the intervention that matters.

Physics

IB HL and SL · IGCSE 0625 and 4PH1

Uncertainty handling and graph work carry disproportionate internal assessment marks, and both are teachable in two sessions. On the papers, explanation questions that want a mechanism rather than an equation are the reliable loss point at both levels.

Biology

IB HL and SL · IGCSE 0610 and 4BI1

The investigation needs a measurable dependent variable, which rules out a surprising number of appealing ideas. On examined papers, command terms decide the mark: outline, describe, explain and evaluate each want a different shape of answer regardless of how much biology the student knows.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The exploration is marked on presentation, communication, engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, and students routinely produce an interesting topic containing no mathematics at the right level. Higher Level Paper 3 is a separate problem: an extended investigation most students meet without practice.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics dominate, and the exploration suits data the student can genuinely collect. Marks go on interpreting results in context, so an answer that produces a correct regression and no statement of what it means loses the communication marks.

Economics

IB HL and SL

The internal assessment is a portfolio of commentaries on published articles, each tightly limited in length and marked on diagrams, terminology, application, analysis and a key concept. Students lose marks by summarising the article instead of applying a model to it.

English Language and Literature

IB HL and SL · IGCSE First Language English

The Higher Level essay and the individual oral both reward a line of argument sustained through evidence. At IGCSE, directed writing marks turn on register and audience rather than vocabulary range, which is a skill that responds quickly to correction.

Business Management

IB HL and SL

The internal assessment is a research project at Higher Level and a shorter commentary at Standard Level, both requiring real organisational material. Application to the specific organisation, not general theory, is where the marks are.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma students

An essay on a prescribed title assessed holistically, plus an exhibition of three objects with a written commentary. Students who write about knowledge in general rather than about the specific title and their chosen objects underperform however well they write.

Extended Essay supervision support

Core, all Diploma students

A 4,000-word independent research essay assessed across five criteria, with critical thinking carrying the largest allocation. The usual failure is a research question too broad to answer in the word limit, which is fixable in the first two weeks and painful to fix later.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Support for self-managed work looks different from subject teaching, so the formats below are shaped around deadlines rather than around terms. All are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video.

Component block on one internal assessment

A short run of sessions on a single piece of coursework, built around the criteria it is marked against. The tutor works on the student's own research question, method and drafts, explains what each criterion rewards, and challenges claims the evidence does not support.

  • Scheduled backwards from the school's internal deadline
  • Criterion-by-criterion review of the student's own draft
  • Explicit coverage of what help may and may not be given
  • Typically four to eight sessions, then finished

Study-systems sessions for a self-managed load

Sessions on the mechanics nobody timetables: building a revision schedule across nine subjects, using retrieval practice rather than rereading, reading a mark scheme, timing a paper. Aimed at Year 11 and Diploma Year 1 students who are working hard without return.

  • A written weekly plan the student builds and then maintains
  • Retrieval and spacing instead of rereading notes
  • Mark-scheme reading on the student's own scripts
  • Reviewed after four weeks against what actually happened

Weekly subject tuition on one named component

An ongoing slot where the target is a specific paper or skill rather than the subject as a whole: Higher Level Paper 3, data-analysis questions, extended-response structure, or uncertainty handling in a science practical.

  • Diagnostic from the student's own mock script
  • Timed practice under the real component duration
  • Notes recorded so each session builds on the last
  • Steps down to maintenance once the component is secure

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Palm Jumeirah

01

What a Palm Jumeirah search for a tutor is usually trying to solve

  • The usual complaint is lost marks in self-managed components, not weak teaching
  • Every Palm Jumeirah student commutes off the island on one road
  • A mobile population means undiagnosed curriculum-change gaps are common
  • Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video

Parents on this island generally are not reporting a weak school. The campuses Palm Jumeirah feeds are among the most heavily subscribed in Dubai. The reported problem is narrower and more specific: a student who is clearly capable is losing marks, and the marks are being lost in the parts of the course the school explains once and then expects the student to manage.

Two structural facts make this sharper here than elsewhere. The first is the commute. No mainstream K-12 campus operates on Palm Jumeirah, so every student travels off the island and back along one trunk road, and the usable study window in the evening is genuinely shorter than in a community with a school inside it. The second is that this population is internationally mobile, so a meaningful share of students have changed curriculum at least once and carry gaps nobody diagnosed.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses at all; home visits are part of our India service. On the Palm that model has an obvious practical benefit, since no one has to drive the Trunk twice more in an evening, but the real argument is specialism. A student whose Chemistry internal assessment has a research question that cannot be controlled needs a Chemistry specialist who has supervised that component, not the nearest available graduate.

The sections that follow are therefore organised around the self-managed work rather than around the neighbourhood: what the school teaches versus what the student does alone, what the criteria actually reward, what the length limits are, and how the two-year calendar looks counted backwards from a May session.

02

What is taught in class, and what the student does unaided

It is worth laying out plainly which parts of a Diploma a teacher delivers and which parts a student runs. Schools do not hide this; it is in every programme handbook. But the handbook is read in September of Diploma Year 1, by parents who have not yet seen what four simultaneous self-managed deadlines look like in February of Year 13.

The examined papers are taught. A teacher works through the syllabus, sets practice, marks it and reports on it. The internal assessment in each subject is a different animal: the teacher explains the task, provides the criteria, gives a fixed amount of feedback that the IB's own rules limit, and sets internal deadlines. Between those points, the student designs the investigation, collects the data, analyses it and writes it up. The Extended Essay works the same way with a supervisor rather than a teacher.

The table sets this out component by component, with the failure mode for each. Read the final column as a diagnostic list: almost every student who underperforms on self-managed work does so for one of those reasons, and most of them are visible weeks before the deadline if anyone is looking.

One honest caveat on the figures in this section and the next two. Criterion structures and length limits are set by each subject guide and the IB revises guides on a rolling cycle. The allocations below are the published structures for the current guides at the time of writing, and your child's teacher or the subject guide itself is the authority. Ask the coordinator to confirm before building a plan on them.

03

Internal assessment criteria, letter by letter

No competitor page in this market names a single assessment criterion, which is strange, because the criteria are published and they are the actual marking instrument. A student who does not know that critical thinking carries the largest allocation in the Extended Essay will spend their effort on presentation. A student who does not know that the mathematics exploration awards marks for personal engagement and reflection will submit an accurate piece of mathematics that scores in the middle.

The practical use of knowing the letters is that feedback becomes specific. Instead of telling a student their investigation is weak, a tutor can say that criterion B is where the marks are going, because the data has been presented but not processed, and show what processing looks like at the top of that band. The student then does the processing. That is the whole of legitimate coursework support.

This is also where the boundary has to be stated. A tutor explains what a criterion rewards and reviews what the student has produced. A tutor does not supply content, rewrite a draft into finished prose, or provide a model for adaptation. If the tutor's words would appear in the submission, the line has been crossed, and the consequence of crossing it falls on the student as an academic-honesty investigation. Some providers in this market sell completed coursework; that is malpractice and no grade is worth it.

Confirm the current allocation with your child's teacher before planning around it. Subject guides are revised on a rolling cycle and the structure for a cohort is whatever that cohort's guide says.

04

Length limits by component, and why they are a design constraint

Word limits are published for most self-managed components and they are not advisory padding. They are the single most useful planning tool a student has, because they tell you how large a question can be. An Extended Essay question that would take a book to answer cannot be answered in 4,000 words, and the examiner does not mark the question, they mark the answer to it.

Running the arithmetic backwards is the trick that saves students most grief. Four thousand words across an introduction, a methodology or framework section, three or four substantive analytical sections and a conclusion leaves roughly six hundred to eight hundred words per analytical section. If the plan has eight sections, the essay will be a survey rather than an argument, and criterion C will suffer for it. Cutting the question in half in week two is far cheaper than cutting the essay in half in week twenty.

The same logic applies down the scale. An Economics commentary limited to a few hundred words has room for one diagram properly used and one line of analysis, not three. A Theory of Knowledge exhibition commentary has space for the object, its real-world specificity and its link to the prompt, and nothing else. Students who write over the limit lose the surplus and the coherence of what remains.

The table below collects the published limits for the components students most often ask about. As with the criteria, these are set by subject guide and revised on a cycle, so confirm with the coordinator before planning. The right-hand column is the thing to act on: it says what the limit implies about the scope of the question.

The two-year Diploma counted backwards from a May session

UAE schools sit the May session, which fixes everything else. Working backwards from it is the single most useful planning exercise a Diploma family can do, and almost nobody does it, because the examination session feels far away during Diploma Year 1 and the internal deadlines are announced one at a time.

The important thing the backwards view reveals is that the self-managed work is not spread evenly. It compresses. Coursework internal deadlines for several subjects, the Extended Essay final submission, the Theory of Knowledge essay and mock examinations all land inside a window of a few months before the session. A student who has banked nothing by the autumn of Year 13 is then carrying six subjects of revision and four pieces of coursework simultaneously, and something gives.

The table below is a generic backwards calendar, not a set of dates. Precise IB dates must come from your child's Diploma coordinator or the IB directly; this page does not publish them, because the IB is the only authoritative source for its own calendar and second-hand dates circulate widely and wrongly. What the table gives you is the ordering and the lead times, which is the part that does not change.

For Cambridge and Pearson students the equivalent exercise uses published dates. Pearson's International GCSE November 2026 series ran its final timetable from late October to 19 November 2026, and the results from the equivalent November 2025 series only reached students on 22 January 2026 — two months of waiting after the last paper. Cambridge works to the same shape across its June and November series: the centre submits entries months before the papers, on a closing date published per series, and the grade boundaries that decide the outcome are not set until after marking. That gap between entry deadline and exam is the point, because the administrative decisions that cap a grade are made long before anyone sits a paper.

06

Where IGCSE students are left to themselves

  • Retrieval practice rather than rereading, from the first week of a revision block
  • Mark schemes read against the student's own answers, not in the abstract
  • Timed practice at the real paper pace well before the session
  • Ask the exams officer which practical or coursework components exist and when

The independent-work problem is usually framed as a Diploma issue, which lets IGCSE students down. A Year 11 student in a Palm Jumeirah household is being asked to run a revision programme across nine or ten subjects over roughly six months, with no training in how to do it, while also being told to maintain sport, music and sleep. That is a project-management task, and it is being handed to sixteen-year-olds.

Three specific skills are usually missing, and all three are teachable. The first is retrieval practice: closing the book and attempting to produce the content, rather than rereading it, which feels productive and is not. The second is mark-scheme reading: taking a question the student answered, putting the mark scheme beside it, and identifying exactly which marks were available and why they were not awarded. The third is timing, which means practising a paper at the real pace rather than at a comfortable one.

Practical arrangements also catch families out. Some subjects and boards carry coursework or practical components with their own internal deadlines, and students who study partly online or move schools mid-course can find the arrangements differ. The exams officer is the person who knows, and the question to ask is which components exist, when they are assessed and what the board requires.

On a pure time budget, the Palm Jumeirah commute matters here. A student losing ninety minutes a day to travel has lost roughly seven hours a week, which is more than a subject's worth of revision time. That is an argument for making the remaining hours efficient rather than longer, and efficiency in revision is almost entirely a matter of technique.

07

Why the search says home tutor, and what online delivery changes

Parents here search for home tutors because that is the phrase this market uses, and the question deserves a real answer rather than redirection. In-home tutoring in Dubai is widely available and market rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside them, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The in-home premium buys presence, and presence is genuinely useful for younger children.

For the work this page is about, presence buys very little. Reviewing a draft internal assessment against four criteria, reading a mark scheme beside a mock script, or narrowing a research question are all screen-based activities. Shared screens make them easier, not harder: a mark scheme and a script can sit side by side, annotations persist, and the session leaves a written record. What matters is whether the tutor has supervised that component before.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home visits are part of our India service only, and every country page on the site states the same. For Palm Jumeirah households there is a particular benefit: the island's single road means an in-home tutor's travel time is unusually unpredictable, and a tutor who has already spent fifty minutes getting to the Trunk will protect their schedule by serving fewer clients, which narrows your choice.

The setup that makes online work is unglamorous and worth getting right. A room with a door. A second screen or tablet so the student can write on paper while still seeing the tutor. A graphics tablet for any mathematical subject at Higher Level, which lets tutor and student write on the same page. And a protected weekly hour, because the first thing a busy household drops is an appointment that moves.

08

Getting started, with the limits stated up front

  • Name the component and the internal deadline, not just the subject
  • Send a mock script and the mark scheme where one exists
  • Coursework blocks are finite; examined bookings carry a review date
  • We disclose match times and time zones for niche specialisms

Begin by naming the component rather than the subject. Saying that a Diploma student needs Chemistry help is too broad to act on; saying that the scientific investigation has a research question the school has not yet approved, with an internal deadline in six weeks, produces a specific match and a specific plan. For examined work, the equivalent is a mock script and the mark scheme, because the script tells a specialist in ten minutes what a conversation will not.

The sequence is then a consultation, a trial with the named tutor who would take the slot, and a block or a weekly booking. For coursework the block is finite by design: four to eight sessions around a deadline, then finished. For examined components the booking is weekly with a review date, and when the student can do the thing unaided we say so and step down rather than continuing by default.

Three limits, stated before you ask. Specialist cover for the less commonly taught Diploma options and for narrow internal assessment specialisms is thinner than for mainstream subjects, and in those cases the right person may sit in another time zone, which changes which slots exist. We say so rather than placing a generalist. We do not publish a price list, because the rate depends on subject, level and tutor. And nobody here will offer a grade or a point total.

One last piece of due diligence applies to any tutor you engage in this market, including directly. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so treat any specific amount you see quoted as unverified.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah's neighbours along the coast share its school commute and much of its traffic. These are the areas families here compare themselves to, and the schools they share.

Al Sufouh

The nearest secondary cluster, with Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School. For most Palm Jumeirah addresses this is the shortest run off the island, and it sets the baseline against which other commutes are judged.

Umm Suqeim

Kings' School Dubai sits here, along with the coastal approach to Jumeirah. Journeys from the Palm run along Al Sufouh Road and Jumeirah Beach Road, both of which slow markedly in the morning school window.

Jumeirah 1

Emirates International School Jumeirah runs the IB continuum here. The drive from the Palm is longer than the distance suggests once Jumeirah Beach Road fills, which pushes a usable evening lesson slot later.

Jumeirah 2

Residential villa stock with a settled, school-aged population. Families on the Palm often compare the two: Jumeirah 2 trades the island's security and views for a shorter, more forgiving school run.

Jumeirah 3

Jumeirah English Speaking School Jumeirah and several primary options sit in this stretch. Palm Jumeirah primary children travelling here face a journey of similar length to the Al Barsha alternatives.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Immediately south of the Palm's entrance and sharing the same approach roads. Marina families and Palm families compete for the same morning window on Sheikh Zayed Road interchanges, which is why bus times from both are long.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The American School of Dubai, Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, GEMS Dubai American Academy and Nord Anglia International School Dubai sit in this belt, and a large share of Palm Jumeirah students travel here daily.

Pearl Jumeira and La Mer

Coastal communities east of the Palm with a similar residential profile and the same absence of in-community schools. Families in both rely on the Jumeirah and Al Barsha campuses.

Al Safa and Al Wasl

Jumeirah College, Jumeira Baccalaureate School and Horizon English School serve this area. It is a realistic option for Palm Jumeirah families willing to accept a longer morning run for a particular curriculum.

These schools are named as context for families choosing a campus or planning a commute. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement by or contract with any school, school group, regulator or awarding body listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component and the deadline

The first conversation establishes which specific piece of work is in trouble, which criteria it is marked against, and when the school's internal deadline falls. For examined components it establishes the paper and the question type instead. This is what makes the match precise rather than approximate.

  2. 02

    Read the real evidence

A mock script with its mark scheme, a draft internal assessment, or the teacher's written feedback. A specialist reading actual work identifies the losses in minutes. A placement test or a general conversation about how the subject is going does not, because students are poor witnesses to their own errors.

  3. 03

Trial with the specialist who would teach

One session with the named person, working on the student's own material rather than a demonstration topic. For coursework, the trial usually produces an immediate decision on whether the research question survives, which is worth having regardless of whether the booking continues.

  4. 04

    Plan the block backwards

Sessions are scheduled from the deadline back, not from today forward. A six-week run before an internal deadline has a different shape to a term of weekly subject support, and conflating the two is why coursework help often arrives too late to change anything.

  5. 05

Close the block, or step down

Coursework blocks end when the component is submitted. Weekly bookings carry a review date against a named target, and when the student can do the thing unaided we say so and reduce or stop. An open-ended booking nobody reviews is the most common waste in this market.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Component-level matching

A request for help with a scientific investigation goes to someone who has supervised that component, not to a generalist in the subject. The difference shows up in the first session, because the specialist's first question is about the research question and the controllable variable rather than about the content.

Criteria quoted by letter

Feedback is specific to the criterion losing marks, with the published allocation named and the current subject guide treated as the authority. Telling a student their evaluation is weak changes nothing; showing them what the top band of criterion D requires changes the draft.

A boundary that protects the student

Tutors explain criteria and review the student's own drafts. They do not supply content, rewrite drafts into finished prose or provide models for adaptation, and they do not distribute awarding-body material. Providers selling completed coursework put the student's whole Diploma at risk.

Calendars worked backwards

Coursework support scheduled from the school's internal deadline rather than from the examination session, because that is the deadline that actually binds. For Cambridge and Pearson students the published entry deadlines sit months before the papers, and plans are built on those.

Study technique treated as content

Retrieval practice, mark-scheme reading and timed papers are taught explicitly rather than assumed. For a Palm Jumeirah student losing around seven hours a week to a commute off the island, making the remaining hours efficient is worth more than adding hours.

No dates or figures we cannot source

IB session and results dates are not published on this page, because the IB is the only authoritative source for its own calendar and second-hand dates circulate incorrectly. Cambridge and Pearson dates are quoted with the series named, and criterion allocations are flagged as guide-dependent.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Palm Jumeirah: your questions answered

Is there a school on Palm Jumeirah, or does everyone commute off the island?+

Nurseries operate on the island, but there is no mainstream K-12 private campus on Palm Jumeirah. Every school-age child travels off, down the single trunk road, and returns the same way. The two main directions are west and south towards Al Sufouh and Al Barsha, for Dubai College, GEMS Wellington International School, the American School of Dubai and Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, or east along the coast towards Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah and Al Safa. The practical consequence for tutoring is a compressed evening, which makes efficient use of the remaining hours more valuable than extra hours.

How much of a Diploma grade comes from work done outside lessons?+

A substantial share. Every one of the six subjects carries an internally assessed component marked against published criteria and moderated by the IB, and the core adds the Extended Essay at 4,000 words, the Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and the CAS portfolio. None of these are taught the way a syllabus topic is taught: the task is explained, criteria are provided, feedback is limited by IB rules, and the student runs the rest. Students who lose points here usually do so through scheduling rather than ability.

Which Extended Essay criterion carries the most marks?+

Critical thinking, criterion C, is allocated twelve of the thirty-four marks in the published structure, which is more than focus and method or knowledge and understanding at six each, presentation at four and engagement at six. That matters because students instinctively invest in presentation and in demonstrating knowledge, both of which are capped relatively low. An essay that describes its topic thoroughly and analyses it thinly scores in the middle. Confirm the current allocation with your child's supervisor, since subject and core guides are revised on a rolling cycle.

My child's Extended Essay question seems too big. How early can that be fixed?+

Week two is cheap; month six is expensive. The arithmetic is the argument: 4,000 words across an introduction, a framework section, three or four analytical sections and a conclusion leaves roughly six hundred to eight hundred words per analytical section. A question needing eight sections to answer becomes a survey, and the critical-thinking criterion punishes surveys. Narrowing means choosing one case, one period, one text or one variable instead of several. A single session early in the process, spent cutting the question in half, is usually the highest-value hour in the whole essay.

Can a tutor help with a scientific investigation without breaking academic honesty rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can explain what each of the four criteria rewards, question whether the research design is controllable with school equipment, show what processing data properly looks like, and point out where an evaluation lists limitations without weighing their effect. The student then does the work. What a tutor must not do is supply content, rewrite a draft into finished prose, or hand over a model for adaptation. If the tutor's words would appear in the submission, the line has been crossed and the risk falls on the student.

Why does my child revise for hours and still lose marks?+

Almost always because the revision method produces familiarity rather than recall. Rereading notes and highlighting feel productive and leave very little behind. What works is retrieval: closing the book and attempting to produce the content, then checking. Alongside that, two specific habits move marks quickly. First, take a question the student has answered, put the mark scheme beside it, and identify precisely which marks were available and why each one was not awarded. Second, practise papers at the real pace rather than a comfortable one, because timing failures look identical to knowledge failures on a script.

What are the word limits on the main Diploma components?+

The published limits for the components students ask about most are 4,000 words for the Extended Essay, 1,600 for the Theory of Knowledge essay, 950 across three objects for the exhibition commentary, 3,000 for a sciences scientific investigation and 800 per Economics portfolio commentary. The mathematics exploration is guided by a recommended page range rather than a word count. Treat each limit as a design constraint on the size of the question rather than a target to reach. Confirm the current figure with your child's teacher, since guides are revised periodically.

When should a Diploma student start the Extended Essay to avoid a pile-up?+

Earlier than the school's first deadline implies, because the pile-up is structural. Coursework internal deadlines across several subjects, the Extended Essay submission, the Theory of Knowledge essay and mock examinations all land inside a window of a few months before the session. A student who has banked nothing by the autumn of the second year is then carrying six subjects of revision and four pieces of coursework at once. Having a research question settled and reading under way about eighteen months out is what prevents it. Ask the coordinator for the full internal deadline calendar.

Do Cambridge exam dates differ between schools in Dubai?+

Effectively yes, and this catches families out. Cambridge International allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones and states that the correct version of the timetable for the zone must be used, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong timetable. So the dates your child sits are centre-specific, not generic. Cambridge also runs only two series a UAE candidate can enter, June and November, and the entry deadline for each sits months ahead of the papers on a date published per series rather than fixed year to year, so ask the exams officer for the zone and the closing date together.

Can a tutor come to our villa on one of the fronds?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE tutoring online, one-to-one, over live video, and does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For the work most Palm Jumeirah families need, the online format is better suited anyway: reviewing a draft against criteria, reading a mark scheme beside a mock script and narrowing a research question are screen-based tasks where a shared screen helps. It also avoids the island's single-road travel time, which makes in-home scheduling unusually unpredictable here.

What equipment makes online sessions actually work?+

A quiet room with a door, rather than a shared living space. A second screen or a tablet, so the student can work on paper while still seeing the tutor and the shared material, which matters enormously in mathematics and the sciences. For any Higher Level mathematical subject, a graphics tablet is worth the cost because it lets tutor and student write on the same page in real time. And a protected hour at the same time each week, since a floating appointment is the first thing a busy household cancels.

Is the Theory of Knowledge essay worth paying for support on?+

It can be, because the failure mode is specific and correctable. Theory of Knowledge essays are assessed holistically against a single rubric, and the commonest weakness is writing about knowledge in general rather than answering the prescribed title that was chosen. A session spent turning a general discussion into a direct argument about the title, with two developed perspectives rather than four mentioned ones, changes the shape of the essay. What a tutor cannot do is provide the argument. The student has to own the thinking for the work to be theirs.

My child has changed curriculum twice. How do we find what is missing?+

With a diagnostic from real work rather than a conversation. Students who have moved between curricula carry sequencing gaps: every scheme of work orders topics differently, so a mobile student has missed whatever each new school taught before they arrived. Those gaps are invisible in reports because reports describe performance in the current class. The way to find them is to work through a past paper or a topic checklist with a specialist, who will usually identify three or four specific missing pieces rather than a general weakness. That is a short block, not a year of tutoring.

What does support for a mathematics exploration involve?+

Mostly getting the mathematics to the right level. The exploration is marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, and the commonest shortfall is the last one: an interesting topic developed with mathematics below the standard of the course. A tutor can show what course-level mathematics applied to that topic looks like, check whether notation and terminology are being used correctly, and ask whether the reflection genuinely evaluates. The student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes the exploration.

Are IB exam and results dates published anywhere reliable?+

The IB itself is the only authority on its own calendar, and this page does not publish specific IB session or results dates because second-hand versions circulate widely and are often wrong. Ask your child's Diploma coordinator, who works from the IB's own schedule. UAE schools sit the May session, which is the fixed point you can plan around. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications, published dates do exist: Pearson's International GCSE runs May or June and November series, and Cambridge publishes key dates per series with entry deadlines months ahead.

Name the component, send the script

The fastest way to get useful help from a Palm Jumeirah address is to be specific. Which component is losing marks, which criteria it is assessed against, and when the school's internal deadline falls. Where a mock script and a mark scheme exist, send them, because a specialist reading real work finds the losses in minutes. From there it is a trial session with the named tutor, a block planned backwards from the deadline, and a review date rather than an open commitment. All lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video.
