IB Chemistry Tutor in Palm Jumeirah

Parents searching for an IB chemistry tutor in Palm Jumeirah are usually asking a narrower question than the words suggest: is there anybody within reach who actually knows the current Diploma Chemistry course? This page answers that honestly. It sets out what the present guide contains, how the papers and the investigation are weighted, where Higher Level diverges from Standard, what tutor availability on and around the island really looks like, and what to ask in the first ten minutes of a conversation. Teaching is delivered live over video, one to one.

  • Taught against the current Diploma Chemistry guide, named in the session
  • Availability and fallback stated before any booking is made
  • Live one-to-one video teaching on Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in Palm Jumeirah

Is there anybody near this island who knows the current Chemistry course?

The honest answer is that proximity was never the useful filter, and on Palm Jumeirah that is unusually obvious. The island has no secondary school. Every child on the fronds, along the Shoreline or in the Golden Mile already travels off it each morning, usually to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim or the Jumeirah beach strip. A parent who searches for a tutor nearby is therefore filtering a pool that was never built around their address in the first place. The question worth asking instead is whether a particular tutor knows this course.

That matters more in Chemistry than in most subjects, because the Diploma Chemistry course was restructured. The present guide is organised around two sets of themes rather than the old topic list: a structure strand covering models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter; and a reactivity strand covering what drives chemical reactions, how much, how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level content sits inside those same themes rather than in a separate appendix, and the old third paper has gone. A tutor working from memory of the previous structure will teach good chemistry against the wrong map.

The second thing that changed is the internal assessment. There is now one scientific investigation, carrying 20% of the final grade, assessed inside the school against published criteria and externally moderated. Students who were taught to a different internal-assessment pattern, or whose tutor was, arrive at the design stage with the wrong expectations about scope and about what the criteria reward. This is the most common place a competent Chemistry student loses a grade, and it has nothing to do with chemistry knowledge.

So the test of a tutor is not distance and not a rate card. It is whether they can say which guide and which first-examination year they are teaching to, which theme a given topic now sits in, how Paper 1A and Paper 1B differ in what they demand, and exactly where the line falls between coaching an investigation and interfering with it. Four questions, answerable in ten minutes, and they filter the market faster than any amount of searching by neighbourhood.

What IB Gram provides is one-to-one Chemistry teaching delivered live over video to Palm Jumeirah addresses, timed to Gulf Standard Time around the commute back onto the island. IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE - that is an India-only service - and there is no office or centre in the emirate. The rest of this page is the detail a parent needs to interrogate any Chemistry tutor, including ours: the theme map, the component weightings, the Higher Level divergence, the honest availability position, and the questions to ask first.

At a glance

  • The present Chemistry guide is organised into structure and reactivity themes, not the older topic list
  • Paper 1 carries 36% between multiple choice and a data-based section; Paper 2 carries 44%
  • One scientific investigation carries 20% and is marked inside the school against published criteria
  • Higher Level content sits inside the same themes rather than in a separate block
  • Palm Jumeirah has no secondary school, so every tutoring option already involves a commute
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A Chemistry question looks different depending on which IB programme the student sits in, and Palm Jumeirah families are spread across all of them. The notes below describe what each programme actually demands of a chemistry learner rather than summarising the programme itself.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Chemistry sits in Group 4 and runs at Higher or Standard Level across two years. Assessment is two written papers plus one scientific investigation. Paper 1 has a multiple-choice section and a data-based section; Paper 2 is structured and extended response. The data booklet is supplied in the examination, so recall of constants matters less than knowing what is in it and how to use it under time pressure.

Dubai's Diploma cohort is a minority of a very large private-school market, so a school may run a single Higher Level Chemistry class and no second specialist. For a Palm Jumeirah family this is the practical reason paid support gets bought: not weak teaching, but no spare capacity for one-to-one attention on a specific mechanism or a specific investigation design.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Sciences in the MYP is taught as one subject across chemistry, physics and biology, assessed on four criteria rather than by percentage. A student can hold strong chemistry content and still score modestly because the inquiring and designing criterion, or the evaluating criterion, was never taught as a separate skill. The gap is in method rather than in knowledge.

Several schools reachable from the island run MYP to year 5 and then the Diploma, while others move to IGCSE at 14. An MYP student entering Diploma Chemistry has usually met less quantitative work than an IGCSE student has, and the shortfall appears in moles, titration arithmetic and energetics rather than in conceptual understanding.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining Diploma courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. Where a CP student takes Chemistry as one of their Diploma courses, the assessment for that course is identical to the Diploma version, including the scientific investigation and its 20% weighting.

Few Dubai schools offer the Career-related Programme, and fewer offer Chemistry inside it, which makes tutoring availability for this combination the thinnest of all. It is one of the cases where disclosing a coverage limit in advance matters more than quoting a rate, because a family can plan around a known constraint and cannot plan around a surprise.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry requests from this part of Dubai arrive in recognisable clusters, usually driven by a university target rather than by interest. These are the subjects most often needed alongside it.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Two written papers and one scientific investigation. Marks are most often lost on mechanism arrows drawn imprecisely, on energetics sign conventions, on equilibrium questions answered qualitatively where a calculation was wanted, and on data-based questions where the student explains the chemistry but never interrogates the data's reliability.

Biology

HL and SL

The usual partner for a medicine or life-sciences target. Shares the investigation structure with Chemistry, which means one tutor can often coach both internal assessment processes even where content teaching needs two people. Mark schemes here punish loose terminology much harder than Chemistry's do.

Physics

HL and SL

Taken with Chemistry by engineering and physical-sciences applicants. The shared skill is uncertainty and graph work in the data-based sections; a student who learns it properly in one subject usually picks up marks in the other without extra teaching.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebraic fluency Chemistry calculations depend on lives here. Rearranging, logarithms for pH work, and handling proportionality under time pressure are mathematics problems that present as chemistry problems, and diagnosing which is failing saves a term of misaimed tutoring.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Workable alongside Chemistry, with heavier statistics and a graphical-calculator expectation. Students on this route sometimes need deliberate algebra support for equilibrium and energetics work that the Analysis route would have covered incidentally.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Occasionally taken with Chemistry where a student wants two Group 4 subjects without Physics. Content overlaps on biochemistry and energy systems, and the investigation has the same evidence standards, so study habits transfer.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Counts as Group 3 or Group 4, which makes it a timetable solution for students who need Chemistry plus a humanities slot. Chemistry students usually find the data interpretation familiar and the systems vocabulary unfamiliar.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Named here because Chemistry students regularly lose Paper 2 marks to writing rather than to chemistry: explanations that assert instead of reasoning, and conclusions that restate the question. Work on precise written reasoning transfers directly into extended-response marks.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Compulsory, with an exhibition and an essay. Chemistry students have unusually good material for it - models, evidence, the status of a theory - and often the least appetite. Support is about argument structure and counterclaim rather than content.

Extended Essay in Chemistry

Core

An independent research essay with a strict word limit, supervised inside the school. Where it is taken in Chemistry the practical constraints of school laboratory access shape what is answerable, and that constraint should be discussed before a question is fixed rather than afterwards.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry support from this island takes three shapes in practice, and the right one depends on whether the problem is content, method or deadline pressure.

Weekly one-to-one against the theme map

A standing weekly slot where the term's work is planned against the named themes the school is currently teaching, so the session reinforces rather than runs parallel. Most useful where a student is following the class but losing marks on precision - mechanism notation, sign conventions, significant figures in a calculation chain.

  • The guide and first-examination year confirmed in the first session
  • Topics named by theme so the work lines up with school teaching
  • Past-paper questions marked against the published criteria
  • Written note after each session naming the next piece of practice

Investigation process coaching

A short block timed to the design stage of the scientific investigation, before any data exists. The work is interrogating the research question, checking whether the available school equipment can produce analysable results, and explaining what the published criteria actually reward. Later sessions are feedback on a draft the student has written.

  • Research question pressure-tested for feasibility, not just interest
  • Criteria explained in the words the examiner uses
  • Uncertainty and reliability discussed before data collection
  • A clear statement of what the tutor will not contribute

Diagnostic and second-opinion sessions

One or two sessions for a family who cannot tell whether the problem is Chemistry, mathematics, or method. A marked paper read against the criteria usually settles it quickly, and sometimes the honest conclusion is that Chemistry tutoring is not what is needed. That answer is cheaper to receive early.

  • Recent marked work reviewed against the published mark scheme
  • A written list of the specific repeating errors found
  • An explicit view on whether the mathematics is the real constraint
  • No obligation to continue into a term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Palm Jumeirah

01

What the current Diploma Chemistry course actually contains

Diploma Chemistry is now organised around two strands rather than a numbered topic list. The structure strand covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. The reactivity strand covers what drives chemical reactions, how much, how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level material is embedded inside those themes rather than appended, and the course is assessed by two written papers plus one scientific investigation.

That reorganisation has a practical consequence a parent can test. Ask a prospective tutor which theme a familiar topic now sits in. Enthalpy and entropy belong to what drives chemical reactions. Rates and equilibrium belong to how much, how fast and how far. Nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition belong to the mechanisms theme. A tutor who answers in the vocabulary of the previous syllabus is probably a good chemist teaching from an out-of-date map, and the student will spend sessions translating.

Paper 1 is split in two. Section A is multiple choice, and rewards fast, secure single-concept work. Section B is data-based and rewards something different entirely: reading an unfamiliar dataset, judging reliability, and reasoning about what the numbers do and do not support. Students who revise content thoroughly and never practise Section B lose marks that have nothing to do with how much chemistry they know. Paper 2 is structured and extended response and carries the largest single share of the grade.

Because guides and first-examination years change, nothing in the table below should be taken as final for a particular student. Ask the school's Diploma coordinator which subject guide is in use and which examination year applies, then check it against the table. A tutor who cannot name the guide they teach to has failed the first question on this page.

02

Why a twenty-minute radius is the wrong filter for a Chemistry tutor

  • The island's single access road is inside any in-home rate, twice per session
  • Distance selects a pool by geography; format selects it by specialism
  • Physical presence genuinely matters for younger learners and for disengaged ones
  • For an examination-year Diploma student, specialism outranks proximity

Searching by distance works for a piano teacher and fails for Diploma Chemistry, because the pool it selects is defined by geography rather than by subject. The number of people within a comfortable weekday drive of a frond villa who can teach Higher Level mechanisms, read the investigation criteria accurately and mark an extended response against a published scheme is small. Widen the search by format rather than by distance and the pool is defined by what the tutor teaches instead.

Palm Jumeirah makes this concrete. One trunk road connects the island to the mainland, and every frond is a gated cul-de-sac off it. The monorail serves the hotel strip, not the residential fronds. A tutor travelling to a weekday session at 4:30pm queues at the junction, drives the frond spine, clears a gate, teaches, and repeats the journey afterwards. All of that time sits inside an in-home rate. Nothing about it improves the chemistry.

The counter-argument for in-home tutoring is real but specific. A younger child who needs an adult physically present learns better with one. A student who will not engage with a screen is not helped by being matched to a brilliant distant specialist. For a 17-year-old eight months from a written series, working through mechanism notation on a shared screen with a specialist, those considerations do not apply, and the geography argument collapses entirely.

So the search a Palm Jumeirah parent should run is not for a Chemistry tutor near them. It is for a Chemistry tutor who can name the guide, locate a topic in the right theme, explain how Paper 1B differs from Paper 1A, and state the internal-assessment boundary without being prompted. IB Gram answers that search with live one-to-one video teaching timed to Gulf Standard Time. It does not sell home visits in the UAE, and no UAE centre exists.

03

Higher Level and Standard Level Chemistry are not the same course

Families often treat Higher Level as Standard Level with extra topics bolted on. It is closer to the truth to say that Higher Level assumes complete Standard Level fluency and then asks questions that would be unanswerable without it. The written papers are longer, the extended-response demands are heavier, and the mechanisms theme in particular expands into territory a Standard Level student never meets.

The decision matters for two reasons beyond workload. The first is university prerequisites: some medicine and chemical-engineering routes specify Chemistry at Higher Level, and a Standard Level pass can close a door that cannot be reopened in the final year. The second is grade risk. A student who would reach a strong Standard Level grade may land in the middle bands at Higher Level, and for most university offers a secure 6 at Standard Level is worth more than a fragile 4 at Higher.

The practical tutoring consequence is sequencing. A Higher Level student with gaps in the structure themes should not be buying mechanism hours yet, because the mechanism questions assume bonding fluency the student does not have. This is the most common misallocation in Chemistry support: hours spent on the hardest visible content while the foundation that content rests on stays weak. A diagnostic session that reads a marked paper against the criteria usually makes the right order obvious.

The table compares the two levels on the dimensions that affect a tutoring plan rather than on content lists. As with everything on this page, confirm the specifics against the subject guide your child's school is teaching, because component structures and timings are revised between guides.

04

Where Chemistry marks are actually lost, topic by topic

  • Calculation chains: round at the end, and carry units all the way through
  • Bonding: name the force, then explain the property it produces
  • Energetics: fix a written sign routine and apply it mechanically
  • Equilibrium and pH: check whether the command term asked for a number

Students rarely lose Chemistry marks evenly. The losses cluster, and the clusters are predictable enough that a marked paper usually diagnoses them in one reading. Mole-based calculation chains lose marks to premature rounding and to units dropped midway. Bonding questions lose marks because the student names an intermolecular force correctly and never explains how it produces the property being asked about. Both are precision failures rather than knowledge failures, and both respond quickly to teaching.

Energetics is where sign conventions do the damage. A student who can define enthalpy change and still writes it with the wrong sign will lose the mark every time, and because the error is systematic it compounds across a paper. Entropy and free energy questions add a second trap: arguing spontaneity without reference to temperature. Teaching here is almost entirely about forcing a consistent written routine rather than about explaining the concept again.

Equilibrium, rates and acid-base work generate the largest single category of avoidable loss, because students answer qualitatively where a calculation was required. The question says calculate and the answer says the equilibrium shifts to the right. Related to it is the data-based section of Paper 1, where the chemistry is often correct and the student never interrogates the reliability of the data, which is precisely what the section is testing.

Mechanisms are the Higher Level pressure point. Arrows drawn from the wrong origin cost mechanism marks even where the overall product is right, and nucleophilic substitution questions are frequently answered with the correct outcome and an incorrect pathway. This is the area where a specialist is genuinely hard to replace, because the marking is precise and a general science tutor will usually accept an answer an examiner would not.

05

Tutor availability for Palm Jumeirah, stated plainly

No competitor page in this market publishes a coverage limit. Several conceal non-UAE delivery behind a foreign contact number. Publishing the real position is a better basis for a decision, so here it is: availability for Diploma Chemistry varies by level and by requested time slot, and for narrow combinations a UAE-based specialist may not be free when a family wants one.

Where that happens, the alternative is a specialist from the wider network teaching on Gulf Standard Time, at a session time agreed in advance. It is said before booking rather than discovered in week three. The practical difference for a Palm Jumeirah family is minimal, because the delivery format is identical either way, but the disclosure matters: a parent paying for specialist teaching is entitled to know who is teaching and from where.

The slot itself is the more common constraint. Secondary students commuting back from Al Barsha or Umm Suqeim cross the trunk-road junction in the worst part of the afternoon, so sessions before 5:00pm regularly start late and the first ten minutes are lost. Families who book a later fixed slot keep the whole hour. During Ramadan, a post-Iftar slot usually works better than any afternoon time, and the schedule shifts for the month rather than being forced.

The table sets out the position by subject and level. Match times are typical rather than promised, and no provider should offer certainty about a specific person on a specific evening before checking.

The scientific investigation: the boundary, in plain words

One scientific investigation carries 20% of the Chemistry grade. The student designs it, carries it out, and reports it, and the school certifies that the submission is the student's own. That certification is why the boundary on tutoring matters so much: a breach is a malpractice finding against the student, not an administrative problem for the tutor.

What a tutor can legitimately do is substantial. They can teach the chemistry the investigation rests on. They can press hard on whether the research question can be answered with the apparatus the school actually has, which is where most weak investigations are decided. They can explain how the published criteria are applied, using the examiner's own vocabulary. They can model uncertainty treatment on a different dataset. And they can read a draft the student wrote and say where the reasoning does not hold up.

What a tutor cannot do is contribute anything that ends up in the submitted file. No supplied data. No written sections. No template that becomes the report. One operator in this market openly advertises finished internal assessments for sale; that is an academic-integrity breach with consequences for the student, and the price being asked is irrelevant to how bad an idea it is.

For a Palm Jumeirah family the practical move is to buy the hours early. Two or three sessions in the week the research question is being chosen achieve more than ten in the week before submission, cost less, and leave nothing ambiguous about authorship. Ask any prospective Chemistry tutor what they will and will not do with investigation work before the first session. The answer tells you how to read everything else they say.

07

The ten-minute interview: what to ask any Chemistry tutor

  • Which subject guide and first-examination year do you teach to?
  • Which theme does enthalpy sit in under the current structure?
  • What does Paper 1B test that Paper 1A does not?
  • What will you not do with my child's scientific investigation?

A parent does not need to understand Chemistry to test a Chemistry tutor. Four questions do most of the work, and all of them are answerable in a first conversation. Ask which subject guide and first-examination year they teach to. Ask which theme a named topic now sits in. Ask how Paper 1A and Paper 1B differ in what they demand of a student. Ask what they will and will not do with the scientific investigation.

Good answers sound specific and slightly impatient. A tutor who teaches this course will name the guide without hesitating, place enthalpy in the theme about what drives chemical reactions, explain that Section B tests data interrogation rather than recall, and state the internal-assessment boundary before being pushed on it. Weak answers are general: talk about building confidence, about covering the syllabus, about years of experience, with nothing that could be checked.

There is a fifth question worth asking about the student rather than the subject. Ask what they would do in a first session with a student who is scoring in the middle bands and cannot say why. The useful answer involves looking at marked work and finding error patterns. The unhelpful answer involves starting at the beginning of the course, which is how twenty hours get spent re-teaching material the student already knows.

Finally, ask about availability honestly and expect an honest reply. A provider who promises any specialism at any time has not checked. A provider who says Higher Level Chemistry at 4:30pm on a Tuesday is tight, and explains what happens if nobody is free, is describing a real service. That distinction is worth more than any rate comparison.

08

Starting Chemistry support from the island

  • Send a marked Chemistry paper rather than a report card
  • Use the free trial to test diagnosis, not presentation
  • Sequence structure themes before mechanism work
  • Expect a stated coverage position before anything is booked

Begin with a conversation that costs nothing. Useful material: the most recent marked Chemistry paper, the current and predicted grades, whether the student is at Higher or Standard Level, which subject guide the school is using, and the date of the next internal assessment or school examination. A marked script is far more useful than a report, because it shows which errors repeat.

Then take the free trial lesson. One session, with the student doing the work rather than watching, is the only reliable test of whether a tutor can teach this student this course. Watch whether the tutor asks the student to explain their reasoning, whether they name the theme and the component being worked on, and whether anything concrete gets fixed inside the hour.

Then agree a plan with the sequence written down. For most Chemistry students that means structure themes before mechanisms, a dedicated block on data-based work, investigation process coaching timed to the design stage, and timed-paper practice in the final terms. Sessions are scheduled around the commute back onto the island and shift to a post-Iftar slot during Ramadan. The plan exists so that it can be reviewed against marked work at the end of a term.

Two things will not be claimed at any point. IB Gram holds no accreditation, approval or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and does not describe itself as having one. And no tutor will promise a grade. Chemistry grades come from a student's own work on papers and an investigation; what tutoring can offer is accurate teaching, honest diagnosis, and a boundary that keeps the student's work their own.

Where we tutor

Where the students on this page actually study

Because the island has no secondary provision, a Palm Jumeirah Chemistry student is defined by the school they commute to rather than by the frond they live on. These are the destinations that matter, with what each one implies for Chemistry support.

Al Sufouh

The closest school cluster to the island and home to some of Dubai's longest-established selective provision. Students here are usually on an IGCSE-then-A-Level or IGCSE-then-Diploma path, so the Chemistry course at 16 depends on a choice made two years earlier.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Where much of the IB Diploma and American provision sits. The furthest routine commute from the Palm and the cluster that generates the most Diploma Chemistry enquiries, often from students in a single Higher Level class with no second specialist available in school.

Umm Suqeim

A dense belt of schools along the beach road. Chemistry students here frequently combine a Diploma timetable with competitive swimming or sailing, which compresses the week and makes a fixed evening session more valuable than a flexible afternoon one.

Jumeirah 1 and Jumeirah 2

Mixed provision inside low-rise villa districts, including schools running Indian and British curricula alongside IB. Some Palm families keep primary-age children here and move them off-island for secondary, so the Chemistry question arrives later than the family's first tutoring enquiry.

Jumeirah 3 and Al Manara

Quieter residential streets inland of the beach road, with a handful of smaller campuses. Students travelling back to the Palm from here cross the trunk-road junction at the worst part of the afternoon, which in practice rules out a session before 5:00pm.

Al Safa and Al Wasl

A cluster of established British-curriculum schools where several Palm students sit IGCSE before a Diploma school. The Chemistry route decision - Core or Extended at IGCSE, then Higher or Standard at Diploma - is usually made in this cluster.

Pearl Jumeira and La Mer

Newer coastal communities with the same structural problem as the Palm: pleasant, well connected to the beach road, and short of nearby secondary schools. Chemistry enquiries here mirror the island's almost exactly.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Immediately south of the island across the trunk road. A few Palm students attend schools reached via the Marina, and some families use Marina addresses for pick-up logistics, which affects session timing more than it affects anything academic.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Palm Jumeirah

Campuses running the IB Diploma within reach of the island

These are the schools whose students generate most of the Diploma Chemistry enquiries from Palm Jumeirah. Where a school runs one Higher Level class, there is rarely spare specialist capacity for individual mechanism work or investigation design coaching, which is the gap paid support usually fills.

Campuses running IGCSE into A Level, where the Chemistry route is chosen

Students from these schools arrive at Chemistry through Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE rather than through the MYP, which changes what they already have. They usually come with stronger calculation habits and weaker experience of extended independent investigation.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Describe the actual problem

A short conversation about the level, the current and predicted grades, the subject guide in use, and what the last marked paper shows. The aim is to establish whether the difficulty is chemistry content, calculation fluency, written precision or method before any hours are planned.

  2. 02

Match on the course, not the postcode

A tutor who teaches Diploma Chemistry to the guide the school is using, at the required level, in a slot that works after the commute back onto the island. Where UAE-based availability for a narrow Higher Level requirement is tight, that is stated before a booking is taken.

  3. 03

Use the free trial as a test

One session at no cost, with the student working rather than listening. It shows whether the tutor diagnoses or lectures, whether they name themes and components, and whether the student engages with the format. Nothing is spent if it does not fit.

  4. 04

    Sequence the term deliberately

Structure themes before mechanisms, a dedicated block on the data-based section, and investigation process coaching booked to land at the design stage rather than at submission. The sequence is written down so it can be reviewed rather than remembered.

    Review against marked work

At the end of a term, compare what changed using marked papers rather than impressions. Where the real constraint turns out to be mathematics or attendance, that is said plainly, including where it means recommending fewer Chemistry hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught to a named guide

The subject guide and first-examination year are confirmed in the first session and the work is planned by theme. A tutor teaching from the previous structure teaches good chemistry against the wrong map, and the student spends sessions translating instead of learning.

Specialism chosen over proximity

The island has no secondary school, so every option already involves a commute. Removing travel entirely widens the pool from whoever lives nearby to whoever teaches this course, which is the only filter that affects a Chemistry grade.

Coverage limits published

Availability by level and slot is set out on this page, including what happens when no UAE-based specialist is free. No other provider in this market discloses a coverage limit, and several route UAE parents to foreign numbers without saying so.

A hard line on internal assessment

A tutor teaches the chemistry, pressure-tests the research question and gives feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing in the submitted file comes from the tutor. That line is stated because one operator here sells completed investigations.

Sessions built around the trunk road

Start times assume the junction queue rather than ignoring it, so an hour booked is an hour taught. Ramadan sessions move to a post-Iftar slot for the month instead of being squeezed into an afternoon that does not work.

Independent and explicit about it

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, no contract with any school named here, and no office in the UAE.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Palm Jumeirah: your questions answered

Who on Palm Jumeirah actually teaches the current IB Chemistry course?+

Nobody teaches it on the island itself, because Palm Jumeirah has no secondary school. Every student there commutes off the island, usually to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim or the Jumeirah strip, so the pool of Chemistry teachers relevant to a Palm family was never local to begin with. That is why searching by distance is the wrong approach here. The useful filter is whether a tutor can name the subject guide they teach to, place a topic in the right theme under the current structure, and explain how the data-based section of Paper 1 differs from the multiple-choice section.

Has IB Chemistry changed since my child started school?+

The Diploma Chemistry course was restructured, which matters when choosing a tutor. Content is now organised around a structure strand covering the particulate nature of matter, bonding and structure, and classification of matter, and a reactivity strand covering what drives reactions, how much, how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Higher Level material sits inside those themes rather than in a separate section, and assessment is two written papers plus one scientific investigation. Confirm the exact guide and first-examination year with your child's Diploma coordinator, because the details differ between guides.

What does the Chemistry data-based question test?+

It tests whether a student can interrogate data they have never seen, not whether they remember chemistry. A typical item presents results from an unfamiliar experiment and asks what they support, how reliable they are, what the uncertainty implies, or what a graph's shape means. Students who revise content thoroughly and never practise this section lose marks that have nothing to do with knowledge. It is also among the cheapest sections to improve, because the skills are explicit and teachable in a small number of hours, and the same skills then pay off in Paper 2 and in the investigation.

My child cannot do organic reaction mechanisms. Is that fixable?+

Usually, and faster than families expect, because the problem is almost always notation rather than understanding. Marks in mechanism questions are allocated to where arrows start and end, so a student can identify the right product and still lose most of the marks by drawing an arrow from the wrong origin. The fix is a drilled routine: identify the electron-rich site, identify the electron-poor site, then draw. It needs a specialist, though, because a general science tutor will often accept an answer an examiner would not, which leaves the habit uncorrected.

Is IB Chemistry HL worth the extra teaching hours over SL?+

It depends entirely on the university target. Some medicine and chemical-engineering routes specify Chemistry at Higher Level, and a Standard Level pass can close those doors in a way the final year cannot reopen. Where the target does not require it, a secure Standard Level 6 is worth more to most offers than a fragile Higher Level 4. Check the stated requirements of the actual courses being considered before the level is fixed. A diagnostic session that reads marked work against the criteria is a cheaper way to judge fit than a year at the wrong level.

Which Chemistry topics does HL add that SL never sees?+

Rather than a separate appendix, the current structure extends the same themes in depth, with the heaviest expansion in the mechanisms theme and in energetics. Higher Level questions also assume complete Standard Level fluency, so the difficulty is as much cumulative as it is additional. The practical consequence for tutoring is sequencing: a Higher Level student with gaps in bonding and structure should not be buying mechanism hours yet, because mechanism questions rest on that foundation. Confirm the specific additional content against the subject guide your child's school is teaching.

What should I ask a Chemistry tutor in the first ten minutes?+

Four questions. Which subject guide and first-examination year do you teach to? Which theme does enthalpy now sit in? What does the data-based section of Paper 1 test that the multiple-choice section does not? And what will you not do with my child's scientific investigation? Specific, slightly impatient answers indicate someone who teaches this course. General answers about building confidence and covering the syllabus indicate someone who does not. A fifth question is worth adding: what would you do in a first session with a student stuck in the middle bands?

How far should I search from Palm Jumeirah for a Chemistry specialist?+

Distance is the wrong axis. Searching within a comfortable weekday drive of a frond villa selects a pool by geography, and the number of people in it who can teach Higher Level mechanisms and read the investigation criteria accurately is small. Searching by format instead selects by specialism. The island's single trunk road means any in-home visit carries the junction queue twice inside the rate, and none of that travel improves the chemistry. For a student in an examination year, who teaches the course matters more than where they sleep.

What if no UAE-based IB Chemistry tutor is free at our preferred time?+

You are told before booking, not afterwards. Higher Level Chemistry is a narrow specialism and early-evening weekday slots are the tightest, so availability for a specific person at a specific hour is never assumed. Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the alternative offered is a specialist from the wider network teaching on Gulf Standard Time at an agreed time, with the same format, the same guide and the same written feedback. No competitor page in this market publishes a coverage limit at all, and several route UAE parents abroad without saying so.

Can a Chemistry tutor look at my child's investigation before submission?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the chemistry involved, question whether the research question can be answered with the school's apparatus, explain how the published criteria are applied, model uncertainty treatment on other data, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not supply data, text or analysis that ends up in the submitted file, because the school certifies the work as the student's own. Buying hours at the design stage is both more useful and completely unambiguous; help sought days before submission is neither.

How do online Chemistry sessions handle practical work?+

The practical work for the scientific investigation happens at school, with school apparatus, under school supervision, and that is where it should happen. Online sessions handle everything around it: designing an investigation that the available equipment can actually support, planning what data to collect and how much, processing results, treating uncertainty properly, and evaluating reliability. In written examinations, practical skills are assessed through the data-based section rather than in a laboratory, so the preparation that moves those marks is analytical work, which transfers to a shared screen without loss.

Does my child need to memorise the data booklet for Chemistry?+

No. The data booklet is provided in the examination, so recall of constants and values is not what is being tested. What matters is fluency with it under time pressure: knowing what it contains, finding the right page without hunting, and choosing the correct value when two look plausible. Students who have never used it in timed conditions lose minutes they cannot spare and sometimes select the wrong quantity entirely. Practising with it during past-paper work is a small, specific habit that returns marks across both written papers.

How many Chemistry sessions a week is sensible in the final year?+

One weekly session suits most students, with short concentrated blocks added where a specific need appears: a dedicated run on the data-based section, a few hours at the investigation design stage, and timed-paper technique work in the final terms. Two sessions a week is usually a sign that the plan is reactive rather than sequenced, and in a final year competing with five other subjects it is rarely sustainable. Anyone quoting a standard number of hours for a Chemistry grade is guessing; the honest answer comes from reading a marked paper first.

Can one tutor cover both Chemistry and Biology for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it works best for investigation coaching, because both subjects share the same assessment structure and the same evidence standards. For content teaching it depends on the levels: one specialist covering Chemistry at Higher Level and Biology at Standard Level is realistic, while two Higher Level sciences usually need two specialists to be taught properly. Where two tutors are used, the scheduling is coordinated so the week stays workable and each subject gets its own written progress note rather than a combined summary that hides which subject is moving.

What separates a Chemistry 5 from a Chemistry 7?+

Rarely more knowledge. Usually precision and command-term discipline. The student at 5 names an intermolecular force and stops; the student at 7 explains how it produces the property asked about. The 5 answers an equilibrium question qualitatively; the 7 notices the question said calculate. The 5 gets the right product in a mechanism and loses the arrow marks; the 7 draws from the correct origin every time. Those are habits, not talent, and they are what a specialist can teach. No tutor can promise a particular grade, whatever a provider's marketing suggests.

Does a Chemistry tutor in Dubai need a work permit to charge fees?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted. Ask directly, and check the official MoHRE service page.

Test the tutor, not the postcode

A Palm Jumeirah family already commutes for school, so proximity was never the thing protecting their Chemistry grade. What protects it is a tutor who can name the current subject guide, place a topic in the right theme, explain what the data-based section demands, and state without prompting where the line falls on internal assessment. Start with a conversation and a free trial lesson, send a marked paper rather than a report card, and expect the availability position for Higher Level to be stated before anything is booked. Teaching runs live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.
