Is my child doing three separate sciences or one combined science course?+
The exam entry answers it. Three separate sciences means three syllabus codes, three sets of papers and three grades: Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625, or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. A double award means one course across all three disciplines awarded as two identical grades, such as Cambridge 0654 or Pearson 4SD0. A single award is one course and one grade, such as Cambridge 0653. The route is set by the school, usually at the end of Year 9, and it changes the homework load, the revision arithmetic and the sensible tutoring plan completely.
Does a Palm Jumeirah student doing triple science need three tutors?+
Almost never, and buying three is the commonest expensive mistake. Three weekly tutoring hours plus three subjects of school homework leaves no room for the independent practice that makes any of it work, and a student who only ever works with a tutor can follow a method but not start one. The pattern that works is one science at a time for six to eight consecutive weeks, chosen from a marked paper, while school teaching and marked past papers hold the other two. In Year 11, two short specialist slots on the two calculation-heavy sciences is the usual settled arrangement.
How is the Cambridge practical component examined, and how much is it worth?+
In each separate Cambridge science it is worth a fifth of the grade, and the centre chooses the route: Paper 5 is a practical test sat with apparatus in a laboratory, and Paper 6 is the alternative to practical, a written paper about experiments. Paper 6 asks for variables, results tables with units in the headings, means to consistent significant figures, lines of best fit, anomaly identification, relevant safety precautions and genuine method improvements. All of that is written reasoning, which is why a dedicated block on it is one of the cheapest grade gains available in IGCSE science.
Does Pearson International GCSE science have a practical exam?+
No separate one. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers, built around the core practicals named in the specification, so questions ask students to describe a method, interpret data from an experiment or evaluate a procedure. Those marks behave like practical marks but sit in a theory paper, which is why they are so often revised as theory and lost as practical. Naming the core practicals explicitly and drilling them from past papers with the mark scheme visible is the fix, and it works the same way online as in person.
Can practical skills really be taught to my child over video?+
The written part, yes, and the written part is most of the marks. Variables, table design, units, significant figures, plotting, lines of best fit, anomalies, safety and improvement suggestions are all written skills taught from past papers. Observation language is taught from photographs and recorded demonstrations, where a student learns to write white precipitate rather than cloudy, and effervescence rather than bubbles. The honest limit is apparatus handling, which stays with the school, so it is worth asking how many laboratory sessions are timetabled before the series.
Which science syllabus codes should I be looking for on the exam entry?+
For Cambridge separate sciences, Biology is 0610, Chemistry is 0620 and Physics is 0625. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences double award is 0654 and Combined Science single award is 0653. For Pearson, Biology is 4BI1, Chemistry is 4CH1, Physics is 4PH1, the Science Double Award is 4SD0 and the Single Award is 4SS0. The codes appear on the statement of entry and your school's exams officer can confirm them in one reply. Ask for the tier and the practical route in the same message, because a tutor needs all three to plan anything useful.
My child understands chemistry but keeps losing marks. What is going wrong?+
Usually the arithmetic rather than the chemistry. Moles, reacting masses, limiting reagents, concentration and gas volumes are one skill wearing several hats, and a student shaky on it loses marks on every paper regardless of how well they understand bonding or periodicity. Ionic equations missing state symbols and electrolysis half-equations with unbalanced charges come next, because both are marked strictly and both are routinely written loosely. Short, frequent calculation drills with the working written out move this faster than more content teaching does.
What time can a science session start if we live on a frond?+
Later than most families assume. There is no secondary school on Palm Jumeirah, so the school day ends between 14:45 and 15:30 somewhere off the island, the car crosses the Trunk, and a mid-frond front door opens between 16:15 and 16:45. That makes 17:00 or 17:15 the earliest honest weekday start for a frond address, and 17:30 or later for the Crescent, where the tunnel adds time twice. Calculation-heavy science belongs in a weekend morning instead, where there is no commute and no school day behind it.
What does IGCSE science tuition cost for a family on Palm Jumeirah?+
Published Dubai bands, read in October 2026, start at AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutors, with platforms advertising from AED 33 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300, and an IGCSE or IB specialist at AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 with travel included. As monthly figures for one hour a week, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table estimates AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. None of these is our price list.
Can my child move from Core to Extended, or from a double award to triple science?+
Sometimes, and the deadline rather than the conversation decides it. The binding moment is the centre's final entry, which Cambridge agrees with the school months before the first paper, so ask the exams officer for that date and for which of the two UAE series, June or November, your child is entered for. Moving up a tier means covering additional content and meeting harder questions, so the decision should be taken against a marked paper rather than against ambition. Moving from a double award to triple science usually also means changing teaching sets, which is a school decision rather than a family one.
Does a Paper 5 practical test affect how the school schedules exams?+
Yes, and it is worth knowing about. A practical test needs a laboratory, apparatus and supervision, so it is less flexible to schedule than a written paper. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version, and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. Ask your child's exams officer which zone the centre sits in and whether the entry is Paper 5 or Paper 6, then plan revision against that rather than a general timetable.
Is a general science tutor good enough for IGCSE, or do we need subject specialists?+
For a single award or a double award, a strong generalist who is genuinely comfortable across all three disciplines can work well, because the course is examined as one. For triple science in Year 11, specialists are usually better value, because chemistry grades move with calculation fluency, physics grades move with formula discipline and biology grades move with precision of language, and those are three different teaching skills. Online delivery is what makes two specialists practical, since neither has to reach a dead-end frond on the Palm at 17:00.
How many science sessions a week make sense in the eight weeks before the exams?+
Two is the usual answer, and the reason is marking cycles rather than teaching hours. Two sessions means two rounds of written answers marked, corrected and re-tested, and that cycle is what moves marks in a short run-up. A sensible eight-week block runs diagnostics and the weakest topics in weeks one to three, timed questions by topic in weeks four to six, and whole papers under exam conditions with marking in between for weeks seven and eight. Beyond two sessions a week, independent practice time becomes the limiting factor.
Do science tutors working with Dubai families need a government permit?+
Yes. The UAE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, and MoHRE's own service page lists a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without the permit carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so be sceptical of any website quoting a specific amount, and remember that no individual is KHDA approved.
Is a tutor allowed to help with a school investigation or a coursework task?+
Within limits that are worth being precise about. A tutor may teach experimental design, explain what a mark scheme rewards, discuss how to structure a method or an evaluation, and give feedback on work the student has already written. A tutor may not plan the investigation for them, write any part of it, or produce assessed work on their behalf, and nobody at IB Gram will. The consequences of crossing that line fall on the student, which is why we state the boundary in writing rather than leaving it implied.
Will three IGCSE sciences count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+
Sciences count as subjects within the British-track rule, which is specific and verifiable: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited A Level at grade E or two AS Levels at the same grade. A double award producing two grades may count differently from three separate sciences, so confirm your child's own case with the Ministry. Equivalency is handled by the Ministry rather than by any tutoring provider, and tutoring is not a requirement for it.
