IB & IGCSE in Palm Jumeirah

The question behind the search, answered plainly

Palm Jumeirah is a residential island with no IB secondary campus of its own. Every Diploma student living on the trunk, the fronds or the Crescent commutes off the island each morning, most often to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim or Jumeirah. That single geographic fact shapes the tutoring problem. A family looking for help in Physics HL or Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL is not choosing from everyone who teaches that subject in Dubai. They are choosing from the much smaller group willing to cross the trunk, find parking on a frond, and be back out again before the evening traffic on Al Sufouh Road builds up.

The honest answer to "is there an IB home tutor in Palm Jumeirah who knows this syllabus" is that there are certainly tutors who will travel to the island, and that the subset of them who have taught your child's exact course at your child's exact level is small. The deeper you go into the Diploma, the smaller it gets. Plenty of tutors in Dubai teach secondary mathematics. Far fewer have marked a Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL Paper 3 or supervised a Chemistry HL internal assessment through to submission. Proximity filters on the wrong variable.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring in a family's own house is a service we run in India only. For Palm Jumeirah the delivery is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with a shared screen for working through papers and a recording of the whiteboard where the tutor allows it. We state that first rather than at the bottom of a form, because it is the whole reason we can offer a Diploma specialist rather than a nearby generalist.

What that trade looks like in practice: a Crescent family whose daughter needs Economics HL support is matched on the strength of the tutor's Paper 3 and internal assessment experience, not on whether the tutor lives a twenty-minute drive away. The session starts at the time you choose and ends when it ends, with no travel charge attached to either side of it. Nobody is sitting in a car on the Palm trunk at 6pm, and the hour you pay for is an hour of teaching.

The rest of this page is written for the test you are actually trying to run. It sets out how to check a tutor's syllabus knowledge in a single conversation, what the Dubai market charges by provider model with sources and dates, who is legally permitted to tutor in the UAE and how you can verify it, what a non-specialist typically gets wrong in each Diploma subject group, and where the academic-honesty line sits on an internal assessment or extended essay. Where we cannot cover a subject with a UAE-based tutor, the page says so and says what happens instead.

At a glance

  • No IB or Cambridge secondary school sits on Palm Jumeirah; students commute to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah
  • Delivery to the island is one-to-one over live video, not a visit to the house
  • Matching is by named subject and level, including HL and SL distinctions
  • Market rates on this page are attributed to the provider that published them, with the month read
  • Private tutoring in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback on assessed work; the student's own hand produces every word of it
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Palm Jumeirah students sit in schools licensed by KHDA to run their own curricula, so the programme a child is in matters more than the emirate. These are the IB stages we teach to island families, with what each one demands of a student commuting off the Palm every day.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the extended essay and creativity, activity, service. Each subject carries an internal assessment marked against published criteria and moderated externally. Final grades run 1 to 7 per subject with up to three points available from the Theory of Knowledge and extended essay combination. The load is cumulative rather than modular, which is why a gap opened in the first term of Year 12 is still costing marks in the second term of Year 13.

For a Palm Jumeirah student the binding constraint is the calendar, not the content. Internal assessment deadlines in several Dubai schools cluster in the same six-week window, and that window overlaps the extended essay's final submission. Students who commute off the island arrive home late, so the realistic tutoring slot sits between 5pm and 8pm on weekdays. We plan around that rather than pretending a 4pm start works.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked 0 to 8 and reported on a 1 to 7 scale. The criteria reward process: investigating, communicating, thinking critically, applying skills in unfamiliar situations. Students who have been rewarded for presentation and effort through the Middle Years can be surprised by the Diploma's narrower, more technical marking, which is the single most common reason a strong Year 11 report is followed by a shaky Year 12 one.

Several schools serving Palm Jumeirah families run the Middle Years Programme to Year 11 and then split into the Diploma or a Cambridge route. The bridging year is where island families usually first look for a tutor, often because the maths and sciences suddenly require fluency that criterion-based feedback did not test directly. Diagnostic work before Year 12 begins is cheaper in both money and stress than remedial work in the exam year.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

An inquiry-led primary framework organised around transdisciplinary themes rather than separate subject syllabuses, with no external examinations. Reporting is against learning outcomes and the approaches to learning skills. The useful tutoring work at this stage is narrow and mechanical: number bonds, written methods, reading fluency and the stamina to write at length, all of which are assumed rather than taught once a student reaches the Middle Years Programme.

Primary families on the Palm often use a short block of weekly sessions to close one specific gap before a transfer, because the island's households move schools more often than the Dubai average when leases and job postings change. Online delivery suits this age group in 30 to 40 minute sessions rather than full hours, and we say so rather than selling the longer slot.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects Palm Jumeirah families ask for most, with what each one actually assesses and where marks go missing. A tutor who cannot describe the paper structure of the subject they claim to teach is the first filter you should apply.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency carries this course. Higher Level adds a third paper that mixes extended problem solving across topics, so students who have drilled topic-by-topic are exposed when a question needs proof technique and calculus in the same answer. Marks go missing on notation, unjustified steps and calculator work shown without method.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use dominate. The common failure is treating it as the easier maths: Higher Level Applications includes substantial statistical inference and graph theory that punishes a student who chose the course to avoid proof. Interpretation marks need sentences about context, not just correct numbers.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms, energetics and equilibrium are where Higher Level separates from Standard. The internal assessment is a single scientific investigation, and most of its lost marks sit in the analysis and evaluation criteria rather than in the practical work itself. Data processing with uncertainties is the most teachable high-value skill.

Physics

HL and SL

Students lose marks less on the physics than on the explanation: unit errors, unstated assumptions and answers that describe rather than derive. Higher Level content in fields and induction rewards consistent sign conventions. Paper work improves fastest when a student practises writing the argument, not just reaching the number.

Biology

HL and SL

The volume of terminology makes this course feel like memorisation, but command terms decide the mark. A question asking a student to evaluate wants a judgement; one asking to outline does not want an essay. Higher Level demands more linking across topics, especially between physiology and biochemistry.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and definitional precision carry early marks; the extended responses need evaluation with real reference points. Higher Level adds quantitative work and a further paper. The internal assessment commentaries fail most often on weak linking between the chosen article and the specific syllabus concept being applied.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The individual oral and the paper one guided analysis are the two components students most often approach without a method. Marks come from close reading of how a text works, not from what it is about. Higher Level adds an essay on works studied, which needs an argument sustained across a long piece of writing.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tools are easy to name and hard to apply. The marks sit in choosing the right framework for the stimulus and then using the case material, rather than reciting the framework. Higher Level extensions and the case study release reward students who practise under timed conditions with the published assessment criteria beside them.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma students

An exhibition and a prescribed-title essay, worth points alongside the extended essay. Students treat it as a general discussion subject and then write an essay with no knowledge question driving it. Support here is structural: choosing a title you can argue, finding real examples, and keeping the claims testable.

Extended essay supervision support

Core, all Diploma students

A four-thousand word independent piece in a chosen subject, supervised at school and marked against published criteria. The common collapse is a research question too broad to answer in the word limit. Tutoring here is process coaching and feedback on the student's own drafts, never production of the text.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support cover almost every request from the island, and they are priced and scheduled differently because they do different work. Picking the wrong one is the most common way a family spends money without changing a grade.

Diagnostic block on one named subject

Two or three sessions used to find out what is actually wrong before committing to a term of weekly tuition. The tutor works through recent school assessments and a past paper section under timed conditions, then writes down the specific gaps and the order to fix them. Families who start here usually need fewer total hours than families who start with a standing weekly slot.

  • Begins with the student's own marked school work
  • Produces a written gap list with a teaching order
  • Runs over live video with a shared screen
  • Ends with an honest view on how many hours the fix needs

Weekly one-to-one on a single subject and level

The standard arrangement: one hour or ninety minutes each week on one named subject at one named level, held at a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot so it survives the school run. Content follows the student's school scheme of work rather than a generic syllabus order, so the session supports what is being assessed next rather than what comes next in a textbook.

  • Fixed weekly slot, usually 5pm to 8pm on weekdays
  • Follows the school's own sequence and deadlines
  • Past-paper work marked against published criteria
  • Changeable to a different tutor if the match is wrong

Component support for internal assessment and the extended essay

Short, intensive support on one assessed component: a scientific investigation, a mathematics exploration, an economics commentary or an extended essay. The work is process coaching and feedback on drafts the student has written. The tutor explains the criteria, questions the method and marks against the published descriptors; the student writes every word that is submitted.

  • Criteria explained letter by letter before drafting starts
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts, never text supplied
  • Scope checks early, when a research question can still change
  • Aligned to the school's internal deadlines, not ours

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Palm Jumeirah

01

What an IB home tutor search on Palm Jumeirah is really asking

  • Proximity is easy to verify and almost never the binding constraint
  • Subject and level specificity is hard to verify and almost always decisive
  • Travel time on and off the trunk is paid for by someone, usually you
  • A trial lesson is the cheapest test of syllabus knowledge available

A parent typing "IB home tutor in Palm Jumeirah" into Google is usually three weeks into a problem. A report has come home, or a mock has been marked, or a teacher has used the phrase "not on track". The search is for proximity because proximity feels like the solvable part. What the parent actually needs is somebody who has taught the exact course, at the exact level, and can tell within one session whether the issue is content, technique or confidence.

Those two things pull in opposite directions on an island. Palm Jumeirah has roughly eighty thousand residents on a single connected landmass with one road on and off the trunk. A tutor who comes to the house is accepting a round trip that can swallow an hour of their evening, which means they will do it for a limited number of families, at a limited number of times, and will price the travel in. Every constraint they accept narrows the pool further. The subject-specialist filter is the first one to be dropped, because it is the one the parent cannot easily check.

So the page you are reading answers the question in its honest form. There are tutors who will travel to the Palm. The specialist you want for Physics HL in an exam year may well not be among them. IB Gram's answer is to drop the geography constraint entirely: the tutor is matched on subject, level and assessment experience, and teaches your child one-to-one over live video at a time that fits the commute off the island. That is a real trade, not a workaround, and the next section is about how to test whether it is paying off.

02

How to tell in twenty minutes whether a tutor knows the syllabus

  • Ask for component weightings; expect numbers, not adjectives
  • Ask which internal assessment criterion carries most marks, by letter
  • Ask what three command terms from a recent paper actually demand
  • Hand over one marked script and ask where the next ten marks are

You do not need to know the subject to test whether somebody teaches it. You need four questions whose answers are specific, checkable and impossible to bluff. Ask them in the trial lesson, in front of your child, and listen for whether the answer names things or describes feelings about things.

First: what are the assessment components in this course at this level, and what is each one worth? A specialist answers in a sentence with numbers in it. Second: what is the internal assessment in this subject and which criterion carries the most marks? A specialist names the criteria by letter and says where students lose them. Third: what are the command terms in the last paper you worked through, and what does each one require? A generalist talks about exam technique in general; a specialist tells you that "evaluate" needs a judgement and "outline" does not need a paragraph. Fourth: show the tutor one marked piece of your child's work and ask what the next ten marks are. A specialist points at a page.

The reason this matters more on Palm Jumeirah than in a city centre is supply. When a family is choosing among whoever is willing to drive onto a frond at 5.30pm, the temptation is to accept a confident generalist because the alternative is nobody. Asking these four questions costs nothing and removes the guesswork. It is also exactly what the free trial lesson exists for, and why we would rather you spent it interrogating the tutor than watching a sales presentation.

03

Subject coverage from the island, and what happens when nobody is free

Every tutoring service has coverage limits. Almost none publish them. The table below sets out what a Palm Jumeirah family can realistically expect by subject and level, how quickly a match usually happens, and what we do when no UAE-based specialist has a free slot at the time you need. We would rather lose a booking to this table than take one and then substitute a generalist.

Two patterns repeat. Higher Level sciences and Higher Level mathematics in the exam term are the hardest slots to fill, because the same small group of specialists is in demand across Dubai at the same six-week point in the year. Group 2 languages at Higher Level and the less commonly taken group 3 subjects are harder again, because the pool is small in absolute terms rather than merely busy.

Where no UAE-based tutor covers a subject, we say so and offer a specialist based elsewhere who teaches the same syllabus on Gulf Standard Time. That is a disclosure, not a bait and switch: the tutor is named, the location is stated, and the time zone the lessons are held in is yours. If neither option works, we tell you to look elsewhere. A family that books in the dark and discovers the gap in week three has lost three weeks it did not have. The one thing that reliably widens your options is offering two possible evening slots rather than one, because the overlap between your week and a specialist's is what the match actually turns on, far more than the subject itself.

What the Dubai market charges, and who published each figure

Three of the six best-ranking pages for this kind of search publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars. That is unhelpful to a family budgeting in dirhams. The figures below were read from the providers' own public pages in October 2026 and are attributed to whoever published them. They describe the market, not an IB Gram price list: our own model starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation, and we quote per student after the diagnostic rather than from a rate card.

The range is wide for a reason. At the bottend sit platforms using university students for school-level work, which can be the right answer for a Year 8 numeracy gap and the wrong one for Physics HL eight weeks from a mock. At the top sit named premium tutors charging several times that. In between is the band most Diploma families actually transact in, and the single largest variable inside it is whether anybody is being paid to travel.

Two practical notes on reading the table. First, an in-home rate is not comparable to an online rate at the same number, because the in-home figure includes a journey and often a minimum of two hours. Second, a monthly package price only makes sense next to the number of sessions it contains: a provider advertising a monthly figure for eight online sessions and a competitor advertising a higher monthly figure for four in-home sessions are selling very different amounts of teaching.

Is the tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE, and how would you know?

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, and the ministry's own service page for it is "Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing", applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days. Individuals who offer private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts is published, so no figure should be quoted to you by anybody.

The eligible categories are broader than most parents expect. They include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. That last category is why a confident sixteen-year-old offering IGCSE maths help on a community noticeboard may be entirely within the rules, and also why the permit alone tells you nothing about teaching quality.

A separate thing entirely is an operation with premises and staff. A tuition centre in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which runs through initial approval, a maximum six-month window to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. IB Gram does not hold that permit, does not operate premises in the UAE, and is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or Cambridge. Any service telling you otherwise is making a claim you should ask it to evidence with a permit number.

What a non-specialist gets wrong, subject group by subject group

  • Group 4: marks lost in analysis and evaluation, not in the practical work
  • Group 5: exploration scope decided in week two, paid for in the final grade
  • Group 3: evaluation and stimulus use, not diagram accuracy
  • Group 1 and 2: oral components rehearsed, or met cold

The case for specialism is usually made with adjectives. Here it is made with failure modes. In group 4 sciences, a competent generalist teaches the content correctly and then lets a student write up an investigation that scores poorly, because the marks in that component sit in analysis and evaluation rather than in the practical itself. Uncertainties, anomalies and the limitations paragraph are learned behaviours, and a tutor who has not marked against those criteria does not know to drill them.

In group 5 mathematics, the gap shows up in the exploration and in the Higher Level third paper. A generalist can teach differentiation. Fewer can look at a student's chosen exploration topic in week two and say, accurately, that it will not generate enough mathematics to reach the top band of one criterion and that changing it now costs an afternoon rather than a grade. In group 3, economics and business responses lose marks on evaluation and on the use of the stimulus material, not on the diagrams, which is the opposite of where most tutoring time goes.

In group 1 and group 2, the individual oral and the guided analysis are the components students most often meet unprepared, because they are the least like anything in the Middle Years Programme. A specialist knows the structure of the assessment and can rehearse it. A generalist improves the student's general English, which is worth having and will not move that mark. None of this is an argument that generalists are bad teachers. It is an argument that the filter you apply first should be the subject and the level, and geography should come a distant second.

07

The academic-honesty line, stated so your child is not the test case

  • A tutor teaches, questions and marks against published criteria
  • The student produces every word, figure and data set submitted
  • No board syllabus, paper or mark scheme is supplied as a download
  • Shared-school matches are checked so work never moves between students

This matters more on a Diploma page than anywhere else, because the internet is full of services offering to supply assessed work. There are operators in this market selling finished internal assessments for four-figure sums. A student who submits one is exposed to a malpractice finding, and a malpractice finding in the Diploma is not a telling-off.

The boundary is not vague. A tutor may teach the content, explain the published criteria, discuss method, question a research question, point at a paragraph and say it does not do what the criterion asks, mark a draft against the descriptors and set up practice under timed conditions. The student generates every word, every data set and every line of code that is submitted. If a tutor offers to supply text, restructure a draft into final form, or hand over a worked example that is indistinguishable from the submission, that is the moment to end the engagement, not negotiate it.

We also do not supply syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads. Those are the boards' copyright material. We reference them, cite the official source, and link to it, and we work from the papers the school has legitimately given the student. On Palm Jumeirah specifically, where several families use the same small set of schools, there is a second reason for care: a tutor working with two students in the same class at the same school has an obligation not to move work between them, and we ask about that at the matching stage.

08

Starting from Palm Jumeirah, with the limits stated up front

  • Start from the last marked assessment, not from a general worry
  • Use the free trial lesson as a test of syllabus knowledge
  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, changeable if the fit is wrong
  • Exam-term scarcity and Ramadan timing are planned for, not discovered

The first step is a short conversation about the subject, the level, the school and what the last marked assessment said. That is enough to know whether the problem is a content gap, an exam-technique gap or a workload-management gap, and those three need different tutors. We ask for the school's name because the scheme of work and the internal deadlines differ, and a session that ignores them is a session spent on the wrong topic.

The second step is a free trial lesson with the proposed specialist. Use it to run the four questions above. If the match is wrong, say so and we change the tutor rather than asking you to persist; a mismatched match is a sunk cost, not a commitment. If the match is right, you choose a fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, which for most island families means something between 5pm and 8pm on a weekday, or a Saturday morning when the week has been heavy.

The honest caveats. In the weeks before the May session, Higher Level science and mathematics slots are the scarcest thing we have, and a family that waits until April is choosing from what is left rather than from everyone. During Ramadan, we move sessions later and shorten them where families prefer, and many island households switch to post-Iftar timing for the month. And if no UAE-based specialist covers the subject at the time you need, you will be told before you pay, with a named alternative and their location, or told to look elsewhere.

Where we tutor

Where the island's students go to school, and what that does to the evening

Palm Jumeirah sends its students off the island every morning. These are the neighbourhoods the school run actually reaches, and what each one implies for when a session can realistically start.

Al Sufouh

The first mainland district past the trunk and the closest cluster of large campuses. A frond-to-Al Sufouh run is short in distance and unpredictable in time, so afternoon finishes land home anywhere between 3.30pm and 4.45pm depending on the bus route.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

A longer run inland to several of the biggest international schools serving island families. Students on bus routes here are commonly home after 4.30pm, which puts a sensible session start at 5.30pm or later on weekdays.

Umm Suqeim

Coast-road access from the trunk, which works well off-peak and badly at 7.45am. The practical consequence for tutoring is that Saturday morning slots are often the calmest of the week for families on this route.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

A string of established school campuses along the coast with no single commute pattern. Families here mix car and bus, and siblings in different schools often arrive home forty minutes apart, which is why staggered one-to-one slots beat a shared session.

Al Safa and Al Wasl

Inland of the coast road, reached from the Palm via Al Sufouh Road and Sheikh Zayed Road. A reliable route in the morning and a slow one once the schools empty, so evening sessions from 6pm are the norm rather than the exception.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Immediately south of the trunk and a frequent destination for siblings in different schools and for tutoring centres. Close enough that families consider centre-based group classes, which is worth weighing honestly against one-to-one for a diagnosed subject gap.

Pearl Jumeira and La Mer

Newer coastal developments with growing school and nursery provision nearby. Useful to island families mainly as an alternative route into the Jumeirah campuses when the coast road is congested.

Al Manara and Al Quoz

Less commonly a school destination and more often where a tuition centre or activity sits. The drive back onto the Palm at the end of a weekday evening is the part families underestimate when they price in-home tutoring.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Palm Jumeirah

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha: the main off-island destinations

This is where most Palm Jumeirah Diploma students spend their day. The cluster is dense with large campuses running the Diploma alongside a British lower school, which is why island families so often need help at the Year 11 to Year 12 transition rather than at the start of secondary.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, level and school

Not just "maths": Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, in Year 12, at a named Dubai school. The level and the school decide the tutor and the scheme of work. Add what the most recent marked piece of work said, because that is the fastest route to a useful first session.

  2. 02

We match on assessment experience, not location

You are sent a named tutor with the subjects and levels they teach and, where it applies, where they are based. If no UAE-based specialist is free at your times, you are told that before anything is booked, along with the alternative and what it changes. Nothing is implied by omission.

  3. 03

Run the free trial lesson as a test

One session with the proposed tutor, at no cost. Ask the component weightings, the internal assessment criteria, the command terms and the next ten marks on a piece of marked work. Your child should leave the session knowing one thing they did not know. If not, the match is wrong and we change it.

  4. 04

Fix a weekly slot around the school run

Most Palm Jumeirah families settle on a weekday slot between 5pm and 8pm Gulf Standard Time, or a weekend morning. The slot is fixed so it survives a busy term, and sessions follow the school's own sequence of assessments rather than a generic syllabus order.

  5. 05

Review at six sessions against the original gap list

The diagnostic produced a written list of gaps in a teaching order. At six sessions we check it off: what has closed, what has not, and whether the hours should go up, down or stop. Families who use this checkpoint tend to buy fewer total hours, which is the point of having it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The specialist filter is applied before the map

Matching starts with the subject and the level, then the assessment experience, then availability at your times. Geography never enters the decision, which is why a Palm Jumeirah family is not choosing from the small group of tutors willing to drive onto a frond at 5.30pm.

Coverage limits are published, not discovered

The coverage table on this page names the subjects and levels that are tight, how long a match usually takes and what happens when no UAE-based specialist is free. No competitor page researched for this project discloses a coverage limit at all. We would rather lose the booking than conceal it.

Every AED figure here is attributed and dated

The rate table names which provider published each number and the month it was read. None of it is presented as an IB Gram price. Our own model is a free trial lesson, a diagnostic and then a quote for the student in front of us, rather than a rate card that cannot know the problem.

The academic-honesty boundary is written down

A tutor teaches, questions, explains criteria and marks drafts. The student produces every word submitted. That line is stated on the page rather than left to a conversation, because this market contains operators selling finished coursework and families deserve to know where we stand.

No regulator is claimed as an endorsement

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge approval, and says so. We explain what each body does and link to it. A service implying regulatory endorsement should be asked for the permit number, and that request should be easy to answer.

A mismatch costs you a conversation, not a term

If the tutor is not right, the tutor changes. There is no argument about whether to give it four more weeks, because a Diploma student eight weeks from a mock does not have four weeks. The free trial exists so that this decision is made before money moves rather than after.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Palm Jumeirah: your questions answered

Is there an IB home tutor in Palm Jumeirah who really knows the Diploma syllabus?+

There are tutors who will travel onto the island, and the subset who have taught your child's exact course at your child's exact level is small. The deeper into the Diploma you go, the smaller it becomes. Plenty of people in Dubai teach secondary maths; far fewer have supervised a Higher Level exploration or marked a Paper 3. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes at all. We match on subject, level and assessment experience and teach one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which is how a Palm Jumeirah family reaches a specialist rather than a neighbour.

How can I test whether a tutor actually knows my child's IB subject?+

Ask four questions in the trial lesson. What are the assessment components at this level and what is each worth? What is the internal assessment in this subject and which criterion carries the most marks? What do three command terms from the last paper actually require? And, holding one marked piece of your child's work, where are the next ten marks? A specialist answers with numbers, criterion letters and a finger on the page. A generalist talks about confidence and exam technique in general terms. The difference is audible within twenty minutes and costs you nothing to find out.

Why is a Higher Level specialist harder to find than a general maths tutor?+

Because the pool shrinks at every filter. Secondary maths teachers in Dubai are numerous. Those who have taught Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level are fewer. Those who have taken a cohort through the exploration and the third paper are fewer still, and in the term before the May session they are all busy at the same hours. Add a requirement to drive onto a Palm Jumeirah frond at 5.30pm and the list can reach zero. Removing the travel requirement is what puts the specialist back on the list.

Is a permit required before anybody can charge us for private lessons?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, free of charge for two years. Individuals offering private tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted as unverified. Eligible applicants include school and government employees, private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Ask to see the permit before the first paid session.

What if nobody in the UAE teaches the exact course my child sits?+

You are told before you pay. The coverage table on this page names where availability is tight: Higher Level sciences and Higher Level mathematics in the exam term, and the less commonly taken group 2 and group 3 courses year-round. Where no UAE-based specialist has a free slot at your times, we name a specialist based elsewhere who teaches the same syllabus and holds sessions in Gulf Standard Time, and we state where they are. If neither works, we say we cannot cover it. A family that finds this out in week three has lost three weeks.

Can a teacher from my child's own school tutor them in the evening?+

Be careful here. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Treat that as press-reported and check the current policy document before relying on it. The practical point for a Dubai family is that "your child's own teacher, privately" is not a service we market or arrange, and a tutor who offers it is worth questioning rather than hiring.

How quickly can a Palm Jumeirah student start sessions?+

Two to four days for most Middle Years subjects and Standard Level Diploma courses, three to seven days for Higher Level sciences and Higher Level mathematics, and a week or more for less commonly taken courses. The free trial lesson sits inside that window rather than after it. The constraint is rarely the matching and almost always the overlap between your available evening slots and a specialist's, which is why families who can offer two possible times start sooner than families fixed on one.

What does the Dubai market charge for an IB specialist per hour?+

Published rates read in October 2026 run from AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik for budget online platforms, from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB at Unitors, AED 270 at TutorChase, AED 200 to 450 and above for specialists in the Bestimate Dubai guide, and AED 650 at BartyED at the premium end. In-home visits sit around AED 180 to 350 in that guide and up to AED 500 in listings, because the hour includes a journey. None of these are IB Gram prices; ours follow a free trial and a diagnostic.

Will a tutor drive onto the fronds for an early evening session?+

Some independent tutors in Dubai will, and they price the round trip into the hour or set a two-hour minimum. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service for us, and we would rather state it than let you assume otherwise. For Palm Jumeirah, lessons run one-to-one over live video with a shared screen, scheduled at a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot. Nobody is in a car on the trunk at 6pm, and the hour you pay for is an hour of teaching rather than forty minutes of it.

Which instruction words in an IB question decide the mark?+

Command terms are the instruction verbs in an exam question: outline, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, justify. Each one defines how much is wanted and what kind of answer earns the marks. A student who writes a careful paragraph for a question asking them to state has spent time for nothing; one who gives a single sentence where a judgement was wanted has left marks behind. Most students lose more to this than to missing content, and it is among the fastest things to fix, which is why a specialist tests for it in the first session.

Is a general tutor ever the better choice for a Diploma student?+

Sometimes, yes. If the gap is foundational arithmetic, written fluency or study organisation, a strong generalist can close it and will usually cost less. If the gap is in an assessed component, a Higher Level topic or exam technique for a specific paper, a generalist improves the subject in general and leaves the mark where it was. The question to ask is whether the problem is below the course or inside it. A diagnostic block of two or three sessions answers that before you commit to a term of anything.

How many sessions a week does a struggling Diploma student need?+

Most families start with one session a week on one subject, which is enough when the gap is diagnosed and the student does the work between sessions. Two subjects at once usually means two separate slots rather than a longer single one, because attention does not stretch. Short blocks of two or three sessions a week make sense around one assessed component or a mock, then drop back. More hours do not substitute for independent practice, and a tutor who recommends four sessions a week in the first conversation has not diagnosed anything yet.

What may a tutor do with an internal assessment, and what is off limits?+

A tutor may teach the content, explain the published criteria letter by letter, question the research question, discuss method, mark a draft against the descriptors and say plainly that a paragraph does not meet the criterion it is aimed at. Off limits is supplying text, restructuring a draft into its final form, providing data, or handing over a worked example close enough to be submitted. The student generates everything that is handed in. Services selling finished coursework exist in this market and a student who uses one risks a malpractice finding, which is a far worse outcome than a low mark.

Does the tutor need to teach at a Dubai school to be useful?+

No, and it is a weaker signal than it sounds. What matters is whether the tutor knows the course your child sits and the way it is assessed: the components, the weightings, the criteria and the papers. A teacher at a Dubai school may know your child's school's internal deadlines, which helps, but a specialist who asks for the scheme of work and the assessment calendar gets the same information in one conversation. Ask about subject and level experience first, and about local school knowledge second.

How do I check a claim that a tutor is an examiner?+

Ask which board, which subject, which component and which years, then ask for something that evidences it. Examiner status is not a general badge; it is specific and time-limited. It also does not give anybody access to unreleased papers, mark schemes or grade boundaries, and a tutor who implies otherwise is telling you something that should worry you rather than reassure you. IB Gram does not describe tutors as IB or Cambridge examiners unless the current status can be evidenced, and the useful question is always what the tutor has taught and marked.

Test the tutor before you decide, not after

A Palm Jumeirah family searching for an IB home tutor is trying to answer one question: does this person know the syllabus my child is actually sitting. Tell us the subject, the level and the school, and we will put a named specialist in front of you for a free trial lesson. Ask them the component weightings, the internal assessment criteria and where the next ten marks sit on a piece of marked work. If the answers are specific, book a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time. If they are not, say so and we will change the tutor. Lessons run one-to-one over live video; we do not send tutors to UAE homes, and we will tell you before you pay if a subject is one we cannot cover.
