IB MYP Tutor in Jumeirah Park

Finding an IB MYP tutor in Jumeirah Park who genuinely understands criterion marking is harder than finding a subject tutor, and the difference matters. MYP marks come from four criteria per subject on a 1-8 scale, converted by the school's own boundaries. A tutor who teaches content without reading the task sheet will teach your child things they already know. Lessons are live online, one to one.

  • Sessions worked from your child's own task sheet and descriptors
  • Criterion marking explained, not just subject content
  • Honest position on which MYP subjects we can staff and when

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Park

Why a good subject tutor can be useless in the MYP

Here is the honest answer to the question behind this search. Plenty of competent tutors live within reach of Jumeirah Park. Far fewer understand how the Middle Years Programme is actually marked, and in the MYP that gap matters more than subject knowledge, because a student can know the content thoroughly and still score a 4.

MYP assessment works through criteria rather than through a syllabus of examinable content. Each subject group has four criteria, lettered A to D, each marked on a 1-8 scale against published descriptors. The four criterion marks are then converted into a 1-7 grade using boundary tables. A task sheet tells the student which criteria the task assesses and what the descriptors require at each band.

That changes what tutoring has to do. A student losing marks in MYP science is usually not short of knowledge; they have written a method nobody could repeat, left a variable uncontrolled, or produced an evaluation that reports whether the experiment worked rather than assessing it. A student losing marks in MYP maths has often found the right answer without generalising the pattern or communicating the reasoning.

A tutor who has only taught examined courses will teach content, because that is what they know how to do, and the student will finish the term knowing more and scoring the same. A tutor who understands the system opens the task sheet, reads the descriptor for the band the student is aiming at, and works on the specific thing that is missing.

The supply picture explains why this is hard to solve locally. The International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum, and Middle Years students are a subset of that figure spread across a handful of continuum schools, none of them inside this community. There is no reason the right tutor for your child's subject group happens to live a short drive away.

So the honest local answer is this: filter for criterion fluency, not for distance. IB Gram matches your child to a tutor who works from the school's own task sheets and descriptors, teaching live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and that is stated plainly rather than discovered later.

There is a practical advantage to the format here. MYP work is documentary: task sheets, descriptors, drafts, rubrics, project journals. All of that can be open on a shared screen while a tutor points at the exact line in a descriptor that the student's work does not yet meet. That is harder to do with two people and one printed sheet on a kitchen table.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP runs five years and changes character as it goes, so 'MYP tutoring' means different things in Year 7 and Year 11. These are the stages Jumeirah Park families ask about.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Early MYP

Students meet criterion assessment for the first time, usually after a primary experience that reported effort and attainment differently. The useful work here is teaching them to read a task sheet: which criteria are assessed, what the band descriptors demand, and how to check their own draft against them before submitting.

Several Dubai schools make setting and pathway decisions on the basis of these years, including which students will later be timetabled for which subjects. A quiet Year 9 can shape options before a family has discussed it.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Later MYP

The two years that decide what comes next. Tasks get longer, criterion demands get sharper, and the Personal Project lands. Students who have treated criteria as administration rather than as instructions start to lose marks visibly, and the gap between knowing and scoring becomes obvious on reports.

In Dubai, MYP 5 students often sit alongside peers taking IGCSE at other schools, which makes comparison confusing for parents. The two systems assess differently and a direct grade comparison is not meaningful.

PPFinal MYP year

The Personal Project

An independent project with a product or outcome, a process journal and a report, assessed against its own criteria. It fails on scope and on journal discipline far more often than on the quality of the product. Students who document as they go score well; students who reconstruct the journal afterwards do not.

The deadline is set by your child's school and the supervision arrangement is the school's. A tutor can coach process and give feedback on the student's own work, and may not produce any part of the project.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The step into the Diploma

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, with external written papers. The sharpest change is the arrival of examinations: MYP students are well trained in process and often under-trained in timed recall and exam technique.

Jumeirah Park families moving a child from MYP into the Diploma, sometimes at a different school, should use the final MYP year for algebraic fluency and timed writing rather than for more content.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight MYP subject groups, with the four criteria each uses and where marks are most often lost. Ask any prospective tutor to name the criteria for your child's subject; a specialist does it instantly.

Mathematics

Criteria A to D

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Marks go missing on investigating patterns, where students find a result without generalising it, and on communicating, where correct work is presented without notation or explanation.

Sciences

Criteria A to D

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The two middle criteria are where almost all the lost marks sit: an unrepeatable method, an uncontrolled variable, or an evaluation that reports success rather than assessing the method.

Language and Literature

Criteria A to D

Analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students summarise where the criterion asks them to analyse how meaning is constructed, and they lose organising marks for essays with no visible structure. Both respond quickly to work on thesis sentences and paragraph planning.

Individuals and Societies

Criteria A to D

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is the criterion that separates a 6 from a 4, and it requires evaluating sources and perspectives rather than reporting them. Investigating marks depend on the research question being narrow enough to answer.

Language Acquisition

Criteria A to D

Listening, reading, speaking and writing, with phase-based expectations rather than year-based ones. Students lose marks by producing accurate but simple language where the phase descriptor expects range, and by not addressing the task's audience and purpose explicitly.

Design

Criteria A to D

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Design is where criterion discipline is most visible: a strong product with no documented design specification or testing against it scores far below a modest product that is properly evidenced.

Arts

Criteria A to D

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal carries more weight than students expect, and responding marks require genuine engagement with other work rather than description of their own.

Physical and Health Education

Criteria A to D

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written criteria surprise students who assumed the subject was practical, and reflection is where the accessible marks are.

Interdisciplinary units

Assessed separately

Units that combine two subject groups and are assessed against interdisciplinary criteria rather than the subject ones. Students apply one subject's thinking and ignore the integration, which is precisely what the criteria reward. Rare in tutoring and worth asking about when a unit is running.

Approaches to learning

Across all subjects

Research, communication, self-management, thinking and social skills, taught across the programme rather than as a subject. In practice this is where MYP tutoring often does the most good: planning a long task, keeping a journal, meeting a staged deadline, checking work against a rubric before submitting.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways MYP families around Jumeirah Park use us, all delivered live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

Criterion coaching on live tasks

Sessions built around the task your child has actually been set, with the task sheet and descriptors open. The tutor reads the draft against the descriptor for the band being aimed at and names what is missing. This is the pattern that changes MYP grades, and it requires the school's documents rather than a textbook.

  • Works from the school's own task sheet and descriptors
  • The student's draft reviewed, never rewritten
  • Targets the specific criterion that is underperforming
  • Short written note after each session

Subject content support

Where a genuine knowledge gap exists, usually in mathematics or the sciences, a conventional weekly hour closing it. Worth doing properly rather than alongside criterion work, because they are different kinds of session and mixing them means neither gets finished.

  • One subject, one fixed weekly hour
  • Follows the school's scheme of work
  • Tracked against the school's assessment calendar
  • Reassessed after six sessions on marked work

Personal Project and transition coaching

Two distinct blocks that tend to land in the same year. Personal Project coaching covers scope, the process journal and the report structure, with feedback on the student's own work. Transition coaching builds the algebraic fluency and timed writing the Diploma assumes and the MYP does not drill.

  • Project scope narrowed before work begins
  • Journal discipline taught as it happens, not reconstructed
  • Timed writing and recall practice for the Diploma step
  • Nothing written or produced by the tutor

01

How four criteria become a 1-7 grade

This is the mechanism almost no parent has had explained, and once it is clear the reports stop being mysterious. Each subject group is assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D. Each criterion is marked out of 8 against published descriptors, giving a maximum criterion total of 32 for the subject. That total is then converted into a 1-7 grade using boundary tables.

The consequence is that the four criteria are not interchangeable. A student scoring 7 and 7 on the two criteria they find comfortable and 3 and 3 on the other two has a total of 20, which is a middling grade, while a student scoring 5 across all four has the same total. The route to a better grade runs through the weakest criterion, not through more work on the strongest.

That is why the task sheet matters so much. A task sheet states which criteria it assesses, and it is entirely normal for a task to assess only two of the four. A student who writes brilliantly against criterion A on a task that assesses C and D has done excellent work for no marks, and this happens more often than anyone admits.

Boundary tables and descriptors are set by the IB and applied by your child's school, and schools report at different points in the year with different amounts of evidence. Confirm the boundaries and the reporting policy with the school rather than relying on any tutoring page, including this one. The table shows the published shape of the conversion.

The practical instruction for a parent is short. When a grade disappoints, ask the school which criterion scores produced it. That single question turns an unreadable report into a plan, and it is free.

How many MYP specialists are genuinely nearby

The honest answer is: few, and that is a structural feature of this market rather than a reflection on Jumeirah Park. The International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum. MYP students are a subset of that, spread across a handful of continuum schools, none of which is in this community.

So a tutor who has genuinely worked with MYP criteria, in your child's subject group, with a free slot in your window, and willing to drive into Jumeirah Park at 17:30, is a very short list. The last condition is what collapses it, because a tutor in demand has no reason to spend ninety minutes in traffic.

We publish our coverage position rather than imply unlimited availability. Mathematics, sciences, Language and Literature and Individuals and Societies are well covered. Language acquisition depends on the language and the phase. Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education are thinner, and for those we will sometimes tell you that criterion coaching is the useful thing we can offer rather than subject teaching.

Where a tutor covering a UAE family is based outside the UAE and teaches on Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book. Two ranking competitors in this market route UAE parents to non-UAE phone numbers without mentioning it, which is the same fact handled dishonestly.

If the combination you need is not available, you are told the position and offered a choice: a different slot with the specialist, an interim start with a stated handover, or a wait with a date. The table sets out where supply sits by subject group.

Test any MYP tutor in four minutes

You do not need to understand the programme to test someone who claims to. Four questions do it, and they have right answers rather than impressions. Ask them in the trial session, before any discussion of price, and listen for specificity.

First: name the four criteria for my child's subject. A specialist does this immediately. Second: what is the maximum criterion total for a subject and how does it become a grade? The answer is 32, converted by boundary tables applied by the school. Third: what will you ask me to send before the first session? The right answer includes the task sheet and the criterion descriptors.

Fourth, and most revealing: what will you do with my child's draft? A specialist describes reading it against the descriptor for the band being aimed at and naming what is missing. Anyone who offers to improve the writing, tidy it up or add to it has told you they do not understand the limit, and in the Personal Project that limit is an academic honesty matter.

Notice that none of these questions is about experience, qualifications or enthusiasm. Those answers cannot be checked. These four can, and a tutor who cannot produce them has not worked in this system regardless of how good they are at the subject.

The table sets out each question with the shape of a strong answer and the characteristic weak one. Use it on us as readily as on anyone else; we would rather you asked and chose someone else than hired a subject tutor for a criterion problem.

Where MYP marks actually go missing

  • Communication: right work, missing notation, structure or explanation
  • Evaluation: describing where the descriptor asks for assessment
  • Generalisation: a result found but never expressed as a rule
  • Task sheets not read before submitting, which is a habit, not an ability
  • Content recall is rarely the binding problem in the MYP

Across subject groups the pattern is consistent, and it is not about content. The first recurring loss is communication: correct work presented without the notation, labelling, structure or explanation the criterion requires. A mathematics investigation with the right answer and no reasoning. A science graph without labelled axes. An essay with no visible organisation.

The second is evaluation and critical thinking, which is the criterion that separates a 6 from a 4 in most subject groups. Students describe where the descriptor asks them to assess: reporting that an experiment worked rather than identifying which source of uncertainty dominated, or summarising two sources rather than weighing their perspectives against each other.

The third is generalisation. In mathematics, finding a pattern in four cases and not expressing it as a rule. In sciences, drawing a conclusion from the data without connecting it to the underlying science. In Individuals and Societies, answering a research question without ever stating what the answer implies.

The fourth is simply not reading the task sheet. A student who does not check which criteria a task assesses, and does not compare their draft against the band descriptors before submitting, leaves marks on the table every single time. This is a habit rather than an ability, and it is the fastest thing to change.

A good MYP tutor spends the first session establishing which of these four dominates, using a marked task rather than a conversation. If the answer is a plan to revise the subject from the start of the unit, the task has not been read properly.

05

The Personal Project, and the line a tutor must not cross

The Personal Project is the largest independent piece of work in the MYP and it fails in predictable ways. The first is scope: a project so ambitious that the product cannot be finished or properly evidenced in the time available. The second is the process journal, which rewards documentation as the work happens and punishes reconstruction afterwards, and students almost always underestimate this.

The third is the report, where students describe what they made instead of evidencing their process against the criteria. A modest product with a well-documented journey scores better than an impressive product with no visible process, which is counter-intuitive to every student who has ever started one.

What a tutor may legitimately do is coach the process. Narrowing the goal to something achievable, planning staged deadlines, teaching what a useful journal entry looks like, teaching referencing, and reading the student's own draft report and saying which criterion band it currently meets and why. That is genuinely valuable and it is where the marks are.

What a tutor may not do is produce, write, part-write or rewrite any part of the project, the journal or the report. Submitting work that is not the student's own is an academic honesty matter handled by the school and the IB, and the consequence falls on the student. There are operators in this market selling completed internal assessments at four-figure prices; treat that offer as a reason to walk away.

We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides or assessment documents. Your child's school holds what it needs and the supervision arrangement is the school's. A tutor works alongside that, never in place of it.

MYP 5 into the Diploma: what to do in the final year

This is the most valuable advice on the page for a Jumeirah Park family, because the step from the MYP into the Diploma is where well-prepared students stumble. MYP students arrive at the Diploma strong on process, independent work and documentation, and often under-trained in the two things examinations demand: timed recall and exam technique.

The specific gaps are predictable. Writing to time, which a programme built on extended tasks rarely drills. Answering a question that demands a specific command term rather than a full exploration of a topic. And in mathematics, algebraic fluency at speed, because the Diploma's Analysis and Approaches assumes manipulation that is fast and exact, with a non-calculator paper.

The best use of the final MYP year is therefore not more content. It is timed writing practice, command-term discipline, and in mathematics a block on surds, indices, rearrangement and algebraic fractions done quickly and without a calculator. Those three things, in that year, remove most of the first-term difficulty in the Diploma.

For students moving school at sixteen, which is common in this community because the local school runs the British curriculum, add one more item: find out which Higher Level subjects the receiving school can actually timetable together. Option blocks constrain combinations more than parents expect, and that is a question to ask before results rather than after.

The table sets out the transition subject by subject with what each needs. It is written for planning in the autumn of the final MYP year, not for repair in the first Diploma term.

Scheduling from Jumeirah Park, and what it costs

  • Workable weekday window: roughly 16:30 to 20:00 Gulf Standard Time
  • Saturday morning suits long tasks and Personal Project work
  • Published band for a qualified online subject tutor: AED 150-300
  • Criterion coaching in short blocks often beats a long content arrangement
  • No figure on this page is an IB Gram price

MYP students in this community all travel to school, because the school inside Jumeirah Park runs the British curriculum. Dubai schools finish between roughly 14:30 and 15:30, and a bus route serving Al Barsha or Jumeirah Village gets most children home between 15:20 and 16:40 depending on district. There is no metro station inside the community.

The usable weekday window is roughly 16:30 to 20:00 for this age group. Younger MYP students do better earlier, because criterion work requires reading and careful comparison rather than energy. Year 10 and 11 students can take a later slot. A Saturday morning session suits long tasks and project work, which is where a ninety-minute block genuinely helps.

On cost, published Dubai rates put a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors quoting IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist IB work sits at AED 200-450 or more on Bestimate's survey, with TutorChase around AED 270. Budget providers advertise from AED 33-65, which buys supervision rather than criterion coaching.

Bestimate's monthly estimates are the better planning tool: AED 240-600 for a weekly budget arrangement, AED 600-1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. In-home visits carry a travel premium at AED 180-350, and independent home tutors at AED 200-500. All figures are the providers' own, read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram price.

Where MYP families get the best return is short and specific: a block of criterion coaching timed to a real task, rather than an open-ended weekly subject arrangement. Two or three sessions on reading task sheets and checking a draft against descriptors often changes more than a term of content teaching.

Where we tutor

Where MYP students near Jumeirah Park actually are

MYP provision in this half of Dubai sits in a small number of continuum schools, which is exactly why searching for a tutor by distance returns so little. These are the communities families contact us from.

Jumeirah Park

The school inside the community runs the British curriculum, so every MYP student living here travels out. That makes the number of MYP families with a Jumeirah Park address small and geographically scattered across several schools.

Jumeirah Islands

No school inside the gates and a small resident MYP population. Families here usually arrive at online tutoring quickly, because there is no plausible local MYP specialist to find in the first place.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Sunmarke School sits here, so JVT holds the nearest group of students familiar with IB assessment to Jumeirah Park, though the school's lower years run the British curriculum alongside it.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Where the continuum schools are: Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, GEMS World Academy Dubai and Nord Anglia International School Dubai. The largest concentration of MYP students within reach of this community.

The Meadows and Emirates Hills

Emirates International School Meadows runs the full continuum, so MYP enquiries from this direction tend to involve students who have been in the system since primary and know the criteria well.

Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Raffles World Academy and other IB provision sit here. A longer drive from Jumeirah Park, and a reminder that the MYP catchment is city-wide rather than neighbourhood-sized.

The Sustainable City and Dubailand

Fairgreen International School runs an IB continuum out on this side. Families here face the longest commutes in the group and are the most likely to need an evening session after dinner.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the task sheet and the descriptors

Not the textbook. The task sheet states which criteria the task assesses and the descriptors state what each band requires, and together they are what a tutor actually works from. A tutor who does not ask for them has told you how the sessions would go.

  2. 02

Ask the school which criterion scores produced the grade

A reported 4 can come from several very different criterion profiles, and the route to improvement runs through the weakest criterion rather than the strongest. This question is free, takes one email, and converts an unreadable report into a plan.

  3. 03

    Hear the honest coverage position

Mathematics, sciences and the language and humanities groups are well covered. Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education are thinner, and for those we may offer criterion coaching rather than subject teaching. You are told which before booking, with a date if there is a wait.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial session

A full lesson with the matched tutor on your child's current task, no payment and no card details. Use the four test questions above. If the tutor cannot name the criteria for the subject, tell us and we change the match rather than asking you to persist.

  5. 05

Review against the next marked task

The right evidence is the school's next marked task, not our impressions. We look at whether the weakest criterion has moved a band and whether the student checked their draft against the descriptors before submitting. If not, the match or the diagnosis changes.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion fluency as the first filter

Tutors are selected for understanding how MYP assessment works, not only for subject knowledge. A competent subject tutor who teaches content to a student with a communication-criterion problem will leave them knowing more and scoring the same.

Sessions built on the school's own documents

We ask for the task sheet and descriptors before the first session, because MYP standards are set by the task and applied by the school. Working from a textbook instead is the commonest way MYP tutoring money is wasted.

Coverage stated honestly, including the gaps

We publish which subject groups are thinly covered and will tell you when criterion coaching is the useful thing we can offer rather than subject teaching. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit at all.

A test you can apply to anyone

The four questions in the table work on any provider, us included. We would rather you used them and went elsewhere than hired a subject specialist for a criterion problem and discovered it after a term of reports.

The Personal Project line published

We coach scope, journal discipline, referencing and report structure, and give feedback on the student's own drafts. We produce nothing. That limit is published because the consequence of crossing it falls on your child rather than on us.

Nothing claimed that cannot be checked

IB Gram holds no KHDA, Ministry of Education or IB approval and claims none. There is no self-asserted rating on this page, no statistic without its source, and every AED figure belongs to the provider that published it, read in October 2026.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Park: your questions answered

Why is my child's MYP grade low when they clearly know the subject?+

Because MYP marks come from four criteria rather than from content recall, and the weakest criterion drags the total. Each criterion is marked out of 8 against published descriptors, giving a total out of 32 that is converted into a 1-7 grade by boundary tables the school applies. A student strong on knowledge and weak on communication or evaluation scores in the middle. Ask the school which criterion scores produced the grade; that single question usually explains the whole report.

Which documents does a tutor need from us to be any use at all?+

The task sheet and the criterion descriptors for the subject, plus a recent marked task if you have one. The task sheet states which criteria the task assesses, which is frequently only two of the four, and the descriptors state what each band requires. Without them a tutor can only teach content, which is rarely the binding problem. A tutor who asks only for the textbook or the topic has told you what the sessions will look like.

Are there MYP specialists living near Jumeirah Park?+

Very few, and the reason is structural. The International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum, MYP students are a subset of that, and the continuum schools are in Al Barsha, The Meadows and further out rather than in this community. Narrow it to one subject group with a free early-evening slot and a willingness to drive here, and the list is almost empty. Matching online solves it.

Do your tutors come to the house in Jumeirah Park?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs in India only, and there is no centre here either. MYP support for Jumeirah Park families is live online, one tutor to one student, on Gulf Standard Time. For this programme the format is genuinely well suited, because task sheets, descriptors, drafts and rubrics can all be open on a shared screen. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180-500 an hour including travel if presence in the room is essential.

How does the 1 to 8 criterion marking turn into the grade on the report?+

Four criteria, each marked out of 8, give a total out of 32, which is converted into a 1-7 grade using boundary tables. Broadly, 28-32 reports as a 7, 24-27 as a 6, 19-23 as a 5, 15-18 as a 4, 10-14 as a 3 and below that a 1 or 2. Boundaries are set by the IB and applied by the school, and schools report at different points with different evidence, so confirm your school's policy rather than relying on this page.

My child says the task only assessed two criteria. Is that normal?+

Entirely normal, and it is one of the most useful things for a student to notice. A task sheet states which criteria it assesses, and many tasks assess only two. A student who writes brilliantly against a criterion the task does not assess has done excellent work for no marks. Checking which criteria apply before starting, and comparing the draft against those descriptors before submitting, is a habit rather than an ability and it is the fastest improvement available.

Where exactly does legitimate Personal Project coaching stop?+

Yes, and the useful help is mostly in the places students neglect. A tutor can help narrow an over-ambitious goal, teach staged planning, explain what a useful process journal entry looks like and when to write it, teach referencing, and read the student's own draft report and say which criterion band it currently meets. A tutor may never produce, write or rewrite any part of the project, journal or report. The consequence of crossing that line falls on the student.

Should we compare an MYP report with a neighbour's IGCSE grades?+

It is not a meaningful comparison, though almost every family in this community tries it. The MYP reports a 1-7 grade derived from criterion totals across four criteria, assessed internally against descriptors; IGCSE reports a 9-1 grade from external examinations. They measure different things with different instruments at different points. If you want a comparison that means something, ask both schools what their sixth form expects for entry into the subject your child wants.

What should the final MYP year be spent on if the Diploma is next?+

Not more content. The Diploma assumes two things the MYP does not drill: timed recall and command-term discipline. So timed writing practice, short answers to specific command terms, and in mathematics a block on surds, indices, rearrangement and algebraic fractions done quickly without a calculator, because Analysis and Approaches has a non-calculator paper. Those three things remove most first-term Diploma difficulty. If your child is also changing school, ask what Higher Level combinations can actually be timetabled.

Which MYP subject groups can you not easily staff?+

Design, Arts and Physical and Health Education are thin, and Language Acquisition depends on the language and the phase. For those we will often say that criterion coaching on the student's own task is the useful thing we can offer rather than subject teaching, and we say it before you book rather than after. Mathematics, sciences, Language and Literature and Individuals and Societies are well covered and usually matched within the same week.

Is one session a week enough to move an MYP grade?+

Often one short block is better than a weekly arrangement. Because the problem is usually a specific criterion rather than general knowledge, two or three sessions timed to a real task, with the task sheet and descriptors open, can change more than a term of content teaching. Where there is a genuine knowledge gap, usually in mathematics or sciences, a weekly hour is the right instrument. We will tell you which case you are in from a marked task.

What does criterion D usually mean, and why is it the weakest?+

It varies by subject group but it is frequently the evaluative or applied criterion: reflecting on the impacts of science, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, thinking critically in Individuals and Societies, evaluating in Design. It is the weakest because it asks students to assess rather than to report, which is a harder skill and one rarely taught directly. It is also the criterion that most reliably separates a 6 from a 4, which makes it the best target for a short block.

Our child joined an MYP school mid-year from a British curriculum. What now?+

Spend the first sessions on the system rather than the subject. A student arriving from an IGCSE or Key Stage 3 background has usually never read a task sheet, never compared a draft against band descriptors, and never kept a process journal, and they will lose marks for all three while knowing the content perfectly well. Two or three sessions on how criterion assessment works, applied to a live task, is the fastest intervention available in this situation.

What tells us the criterion coaching has actually worked?+

The evidence is the school's next marked task, not our impression of the sessions. We look for the weakest criterion moving up a band, and for the student checking their own draft against the descriptors before submitting without being told to. If neither has happened after a short block, either the diagnosis was wrong or the match is, and we change one of those rather than adding hours. Nobody can honestly promise a grade.

Do interdisciplinary units need separate support?+

Occasionally, and they catch students out when they do. An interdisciplinary unit is assessed against interdisciplinary criteria rather than the subject criteria, and it rewards genuine integration of two subject groups. Students typically apply one subject's thinking well and treat the other as decoration, which is exactly what the criteria do not reward. If a unit is running and the mark matters, send the task sheet, because the descriptors are different from the ones your child is used to.

Ask for the criteria, not the curriculum

If you are looking for an IB MYP tutor in Jumeirah Park, the filter that matters is criterion fluency rather than distance. Ask any tutor to name the four criteria for your child's subject and to explain how a total out of 32 becomes a reported grade. Ask the school which criterion scores produced the last grade, because that turns a confusing report into a plan. Then send the task sheet and the descriptors, not the textbook. Our sessions run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial first.
