IB Home Tutor in Jumeirah Islands

Families searching for an IB home tutor in Jumeirah Islands usually want to know one thing: is there anybody within reach who actually knows this programme? This page answers it properly. It sets out what IB-specific expertise consists of, subject by subject, so you can test any tutor against it, and it explains plainly that IB Gram delivers these lessons live online rather than at your door.

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Islands

What 'knows the IB' actually means

Jumeirah Islands is a gated community of villas built around man-made lakes, with no school inside the gates. Every school-age child here travels out, most often to Jumeirah Village, Al Barsha, The Meadows or Emirates Hills. So when a parent here searches for an IB home tutor, the underlying question is rarely about convenience alone. It is whether anyone reachable understands the programme their child is actually sitting.

That question deserves a real answer rather than reassurance, so here is what IB-specific knowledge consists of. It is command terms, and how an answer to 'evaluate' differs from an answer to 'outline'. It is criterion-based marking, where a mark comes from a descriptor rather than from a total of correct points. It is paper structures and their weightings. It is how internal assessment is marked and moderated. And it is the core: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS.

None of that is implied by being an excellent teacher of the same subject in another system. A strong A Level chemist knows the chemistry and may not know what Paper 3 contains or which criterion rewards what in an internal investigation. A capable Key Stage 3 mathematician may not know that the Diploma's Analysis and Approaches has a non-calculator paper that changes how algebra must be taught.

This matters more in the IB than in most systems because so much of the grade is not a written paper. Internal assessment, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are all marked against published criteria, with deadlines set by your child's school rather than by the IB. A tutor who has never read a criterion descriptor cannot help with the part of the Diploma that students most consistently mishandle.

Supply is the other half of the honest answer. The International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum, so IB families are a minority of a large market. Narrow that to one subject at Higher Level, within driving distance of a gated community off Sheikh Zayed Road, available at six in the evening, and the list is very short.

One more thing worth knowing before the detail: a great deal of the Diploma is decided by deadlines your child's school sets rather than by the IB. Internal assessment milestones, Extended Essay checkpoints and mock windows cluster, and a student with four of them in one fortnight has a planning problem that no amount of subject teaching addresses. A tutor who asks for the school's assessment calendar in the first conversation is telling you they know this.

IB Gram's answer is to drop the distance condition and keep the rest. Your child is matched to a subject and level specialist who teaches live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. We target the home-tutor phrase because it is what parents type, and we would rather tell you now than let you find out after a deposit.

At a glance

  • IB expertise is command terms, criteria, paper structures and the core
  • Excellent subject teaching in another system does not imply it
  • A large share of the Diploma grade is criterion-marked coursework
  • No school sits inside Jumeirah Islands; every student travels out
  • Lessons are delivered live online; there is no UAE home-visit option
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Jumeirah Islands children are spread across three IB programmes, and 'knowing the IB' means something different in each. Programme is the first thing to match, before subject.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary and inquiry-led, with no subject syllabus to revise and no external examination. What a tutor needs here is diagnostic skill rather than programme knowledge: establishing where number fluency, reading inference and written explanation actually sit against age expectation, then building practice that does not feel like more school.

With no school inside Jumeirah Islands, primary pupils here attend several different schools, so a tutor cannot assume a shared curriculum sequence. Diagnostic sessions matter more in this community than a fixed programme would.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of 8 against published descriptors and converted to a 1-7 grade by the school's boundaries. A tutor without criterion fluency will teach content to a student whose problem is communication or evaluation, and the grade will not move however well the content is taught.

MYP work is documentary: task sheets, descriptors, drafts and rubrics. Those come from the school rather than from a textbook, which is one reason screen sharing suits this programme particularly well.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, with written papers in the May session for UAE schools. The genuine difficulty is sequencing: four internal deadlines in one fortnight is a planning problem that content teaching does not touch.

Dubai Diploma candidates sit the May session, and the school's internal coursework deadlines fall roughly a year before it. Families here routinely plan around the exam date and meet the real deadline three weeks out.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses combined with a career-related study and a reflective project. UAE provision is limited to a handful of schools, and tutoring usually targets the Diploma courses inside it plus the personal and professional skills component, which students under-plan.

With so few UAE schools offering it, a Jumeirah Islands family on this route will find that local word of mouth produces nobody who has taught the programme. This is the clearest case where searching by distance returns nothing.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a genuine specialist in each IB subject must know, beyond the subject itself. Use these as the test; a specialist produces the answer without hesitating.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

A specialist knows that Paper 1 permits no calculator, which makes exact algebraic manipulation a trained skill rather than a by-product, and that Higher Level adds proof by induction, complex numbers, series and vector geometry. They also know the exploration carries roughly a fifth of the grade across five criteria.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A specialist knows this is calculator-active throughout and statistics-led, with graph theory at Higher Level, and that marks are lost in interpretation rather than calculation. They also know which quantitative degrees expect Analysis and Approaches instead, which is a conversation for the first Diploma year.

Physics

HL and SL

A specialist can tell you what the data-based and extended-response components demand, that unit and significant-figure discipline costs more marks than physics errors, and that Higher Level separates at fields and induction. They know the investigation's four criteria and that design carries as much weight as analysis.

Chemistry

HL and SL

A specialist teaches organic chemistry as electron movement rather than memorised products, because examiners use unfamiliar molecules deliberately. They know that mole reliability rather than comprehension decides calculation marks, and that spectroscopic identification arrives late and is under-revised.

Biology

HL and SL

A specialist knows the marks are lost to command terms rather than recall, and can distinguish what outline, explain, evaluate and distinguish each require. Examiner reports repeat this every session. They also know the statistics the investigation expects, which students meet nowhere else in the course.

Economics

HL and SL

A specialist knows the internal assessment is three commentaries of 800 words on published news articles, and that article choice is half the mark because a poorly chosen article cannot carry a diagram. They know Higher Level adds quantitative work and a further paper.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

A specialist can describe the Individual Oral precisely: a global issue, two texts, a sustained argument rather than a summary. They know Paper 1 is unseen analysis and Paper 2 comparative, and that students lose marks by summarising rather than analysing how meaning is constructed.

Business Management

HL and SL

A specialist knows which parts catch out strong writers, namely investment appraisal and cash-flow forecasting, and that the research project needs a real organisation with a question narrow enough to answer inside the word limit. They know Higher Level adds extension topics.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A specialist knows the internal assessment fails on scope rather than ambition, that the written papers want pseudocode rather than a favourite language, and that Higher Level adds abstract data structures and resource management. They can say what a documented client brief has to contain.

TOK, the Extended Essay and IA coaching

Core components

A specialist can explain what each component is assessed on and, above all, what a tutor may and may not do: teaching research question design, argument structure and referencing, with feedback on the student's own drafts, and never writing any part of it. Any other answer ends the conversation.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Jumeirah Islands families use IB tutoring, all one to one and delivered on live video in Gulf Standard Time.

A diagnostic session first

One session whose only purpose is to establish where the student actually is against the level they are entered for, using their own marked work. It produces a written read rather than a programme, and some families take it and conclude they do not need weekly tutoring. We would rather you reached that conclusion early than slowly.

  • One session, one subject, a written diagnosis
  • Works from the student's own marked work
  • No commitment afterwards
  • Useful before Higher Level choices are locked

Weekly specialist teaching

A fixed hour per subject per week with the same tutor, working to your child's school calendar rather than a generic syllabus order. Suited to Diploma students, because the typical problem is sequencing several deadlines rather than one weak topic, and that needs continuity.

  • Same tutor, same slot, tracked against school deadlines
  • Short written feedback after each session
  • Frequency rises for mocks and the final term
  • A second subject added without changing the first tutor

Core and coursework coaching

Sessions built around an internal assessment, Extended Essay or TOK deadline: research question design, structure, method, referencing and feedback on drafts the student has written. The tutor reads and comments. The tutor writes nothing, and we publish that limit because several operators in this market do not observe it.

  • Research question narrowed before any writing starts
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against published descriptors
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Timed to the school's internal deadline

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jumeirah Islands

01

What an IB home tutor in Jumeirah Islands means in practice

  • One-to-one, live, online; no UAE home visits and no UAE centre
  • Matched by programme, subject and level
  • Sessions scheduled around when your child actually gets home
  • A free trial session before any payment

Locally the phrase means one-to-one IB teaching arranged for a child who lives in this community, without the family having to drive to a centre after school. Jumeirah Islands has no school inside the gates and no tuition centre, so everything already involves a car. The appeal of a home tutor is removing one more journey from an evening that already has two.

IB Gram removes it differently. Lessons are live online, one tutor to one student, with a shared whiteboard and the past paper on screen for both. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all; our in-person service exists only in India, and there is no office or centre here either. Nothing on this site will suggest otherwise.

The trade is worth setting out plainly. Insisting on a tutor at your door means choosing from people who hold a Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation private tuition permit, teach your child's subject at your child's level, have a free slot in your window, and will drive into a gated community off Sheikh Zayed Road at 17:30. Those four conditions intersect in very few people.

Choosing live video removes the fourth condition and keeps the three that affect the grade. For a mainstream Standard Level subject the practical difference is modest. For Chemistry at Higher Level, Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or Computer Science, it is the difference between a tutor who has taught the course to a May session and a capable generalist.

Where in-person provision genuinely wins, we will say so. A younger child who needs an adult beside them to stay on task, a household with nowhere quiet in the early evening, or hands-on practical equipment coaching are all better served face to face. If that is your situation, hire locally and expect the travel premium the market charges for it.

02

Six things an IB specialist knows that a good teacher may not

This is the substance of the question behind the search, so here it is as a list you can use. None of these is obscure within the programme, and all of them are invisible from outside it, which is why a parent cannot judge expertise from a CV.

Command terms come first. The IB uses a defined vocabulary of instructions, and 'outline', 'explain', 'evaluate' and 'distinguish' each demand a different answer shape. A student who writes a good answer to the wrong command term scores poorly, and examiner reports repeat this every session. A tutor who treats these as interchangeable will not fix it.

Second, criterion-based marking: in the Middle Years Programme and in all Diploma internal assessment, marks come from descriptors rather than from a count of correct points. Third, paper structures and weightings, including which components exist at Higher Level and not at Standard. Fourth, how internal assessment is marked and moderated, and what the school's role in that is.

Fifth, the core. Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS are where Diploma students lose points they cannot recover, because the deadlines are internal and the work is independent. Sixth, the academic honesty boundary: exactly what a tutor may and may not do with a student's assessed work, which is both an ethical and a practical question.

The table sets each out with the question to ask and what a weak answer sounds like. It works on us as readily as on anyone else, and we would rather you used it and chose someone else than hired a confident generalist for a Higher Level course.

IB-SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, AND HOW TO TEST FOR IT

Command terms as distinct instructionsHow does an 'evaluate' answer differ from an 'outline' answer?Treats them as different amounts of detail
Criterion-based markingWhich criteria does this assessment use, and what does each reward?Describes the assessment in general terms
Paper structures and weightingsWhat are the components at this level and how are they weighted?Quotes the Standard Level structure for a Higher Level course
Internal assessment and moderationHow is this marked, and what does the school do with it?Is unsure whether the school marks it

03

Home tutoring in this area: the market, honestly described

A fair page about this search should describe the thing being searched for rather than only the alternative. In-home tutoring in Dubai is a real and well-established market. Published figures put in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour on Bestimate's survey, and independent home tutors at AED 200-500. Monthly in-home packages of around AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour visits are advertised.

What the premium pays for is travel and presence. For a gated community reached from Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road, a tutor coming from Al Barsha or Business Bay in the 17:30 peak is adding forty to ninety minutes of round-trip driving to your hour. That cost appears either in the rate or in the tutor's willingness to still be doing it in week eleven.

Presence has genuine value for some students, and it is worth being honest about who. A child who will not remain in the chair without an adult present. A household with no quiet room at six in the evening. Practical equipment handling. In those cases a home visit is the better service and the premium is justified.

What the premium does not buy is subject depth. The tutor willing to make that drive at that hour for that rate is drawn from a smaller and generally less specialised pool, because an in-demand Higher Level specialist has no reason to spend ninety minutes in traffic. That is the trade, stated plainly, and the table lays it out so you can judge it against your own household.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so if you decide presence matters more than depth, you need a local in-home provider and the published rates above are the market you will be buying in.

Why hiring locally does not reduce the price

Parents often expect a neighbourhood tutor to be cheaper than a specialist, and in this market the published figures do not support that. The budget end is online: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65. The in-home end is the most expensive band for equivalent teaching, because travel is inside the rate.

In the middle, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, which is roughly where a qualified subject tutor sits. Above that, TutorChase quotes around AED 270 for specialist work and Bestimate's survey puts specialist IB and IGCSE tuition at AED 200-450 or more. BartyED's premium examiner-led tier reaches AED 650.

So the structure of the market is that proximity costs more and buys less specialisation, while the cheapest option is online supervision that does not teach the programme. The band that moves IB grades is the qualified-to-specialist range, and it is available without a travel premium.

Treat examiner claims carefully wherever they appear. Current examiner status is hard to verify and must never be used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. If a provider's price rests on it, ask what evidences the claim before paying for it.

Every figure here is the provider's or survey's own, read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price. We publish no rate card because the right number depends on subject, level and weeks remaining. Bestimate's monthly estimates are the better planning tool: AED 240-600 budget, AED 600-1,200 mid-market, AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

05

The core: where Diploma students lose points nobody warned them about

  • Extended Essay quality is mostly decided by the research question
  • TOK asks for argument about knowledge, not for knowledge
  • CAS is ungraded and still required for the Diploma
  • Internal deadlines cluster; the fix is a plan, not more content
  • None of this responds to subject content teaching

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS are the parts of the Diploma that generalist tutors handle least well, and they are where avoidable points go. Each is independent work against published criteria with deadlines set by your child's school, usually a long way before the written papers, and none of them responds to content teaching.

The Extended Essay fails on the research question more often than on the research. A question too broad to answer in 4,000 words produces a descriptive essay, and that is decided in the first fortnight rather than in the final draft. A tutor can teach question design, argument structure and referencing, and can read and comment on the student's own drafts, which is where the value is.

Theory of Knowledge is an exhibition and a prescribed-title essay, and students struggle because it asks for argument about knowledge rather than knowledge itself. Students who write what they believe rather than constructing and testing a claim lose marks consist. That too is teachable, and it is rarely taught outside the school.

CAS is the component families forget until it becomes urgent. It is not graded, but it must be completed and evidenced, and the Diploma is not awarded without it. A tutor cannot do CAS for a student. What a tutor can do is point out in September that the reflection record is part of the requirement rather than an afterthought.

The sequencing point is the practical one. Internal assessment deadlines, the Extended Essay milestones and mock examinations tend to cluster, and a student with four deadlines in one fortnight needs a plan rather than more teaching. That planning conversation is often the single most useful hour a Diploma family buys.

06

The academic honesty boundary, stated plainly

  • Teaching, criteria explanation and draft feedback: yes
  • Writing or supplying any part of assessed work: never
  • Official papers and mark schemes: cited and linked, not supplied
  • Any promise of a grade: not something an honest provider will make

This is the shortest section with the highest stakes. A tutor may teach content, explain assessment criteria, help a student design a research question, teach referencing and academic conventions, and read and comment on work the student has written themselves. That is the whole legitimate scope, and it is genuinely effective.

A tutor may not write, part-write, rewrite to completion or supply any portion of an internal assessment, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or Personal Project. Submitting work that is not the student's own is a malpractice matter handled by the IB, and the consequence can reach the loss of the Diploma. The risk falls on your child, not on the tutor.

There are operators in this SERP selling completed internal assessments outright at four-figure prices. A Jumeirah Islands parent comparing quotes should treat that offer as a disqualification rather than a service, and should ask every provider the same question: what will you do with my child's draft?

The right answer is unglamorous. The tutor reads the draft with the published descriptors open, states which band the work currently meets and why, and names the specific thing missing: no evaluation of method, an uncertainty never propagated, a conclusion that does not answer the research question. The student then fixes it, and learns to do it again.

We also do not reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. They are cited and linked; your child's school holds licensed access to what it needs.

07

Scheduling from a gated community with no school inside

This is a real operational difference between Jumeirah Islands and the villa communities that have a school at their centre. Every child here leaves the community for school, so nobody gets the early arrival home that an in-community school allows. Dubai schools finish between roughly 14:30 and 15:30, and the return journey puts most students here home between 15:40 and 16:50.

The practical consequence is that 16:30 is optimistic and 17:00 to 17:30 is dependable. Second-year Diploma students frequently do better at 19:30, after dinner, particularly for Theory of Knowledge, essay work or anything requiring sustained argument rather than quick recall. Booking the wrong hour is the commonest reason an arrangement quietly ends in week five.

Jumeirah Islands does have one transport advantage over the communities further inland: the Red Line station on the edge of Jumeirah Lakes Towers is a short drive away. That helps a teenager with an after-school activity and does nothing for a tutoring timetable, because the session happens at home either way.

Use the weekend for long work. A Saturday morning slot is the only place in the week where a full timed paper or a proper Extended Essay drafting session genuinely fits, and Sunday afternoon is the natural time to review what came out of it.

During Ramadan, school hours shorten and households run later; a post-Iftar session or a late-morning weekend slot works better than anything at five in the afternoon. We reschedule rather than cancel, and because nobody travels a reschedule is a slot swap rather than a negotiation.

Regulators, permits and what we do not claim

  • KHDA regulates Dubai; ADEK Abu Dhabi; SPEA Sharjah
  • We hold no regulator or board approval and claim none
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • No fine amounts are published; distrust quoted figures
  • Mandatory UAE subjects sit on top of the Diploma load

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by any of them, nor by the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is the specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai. We explain what these bodies do because parents ask, not because any of them endorses us, and any provider implying a regulator has vetted its tutors is worth questioning closely.

On the tutor side, individuals providing private lessons in the UAE need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and applied for through MoHRE's app, website or e-services, with a two-working-day completion time.

u.ae states that individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount quoted to you with suspicion. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules also bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school.

There is one timetable fact worth adding, because it affects every Dubai family's week. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA calculating instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit. In a Diploma week already carrying six subjects and the core, that is real pressure.

Where we tutor

Jumeirah Islands and the communities around it

Jumeirah Islands sits between Jumeirah Park and the Jumeirah Lakes Towers side of the city, which gives it a different school map and a different commute from the villa communities inland. These are the areas families here come from.

Jumeirah Islands

Gated villa clusters built around lakes, with a community pavilion and no school inside. Every pupil is driven or bussed out, so arrivals home are later than in communities with a school at the centre.

Jumeirah Islands Townhouses

A separate townhouse enclave adjoining the main community, with the same school map and the same travel pattern. Study space rather than travel is often the limiting factor on sessions here.

Jumeirah Heights

Low-rise apartments and townhouses immediately alongside, sharing the same approach roads and the same preference for a settled evening slot rather than a rushed late-afternoon one.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers

A short drive away, with the Red Line station on its edge, which makes it the nearest point where public transport is genuinely useful. A high-rise population with a very mixed school map.

Jumeirah Park

The neighbouring villa grid, which does have a school inside it. Families in both communities frequently share bus routes, so arrival times are comparable once the route order is accounted for.

The Meadows and Emirates Hills

Where Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills sit, both long-established in IB provision. The most relevant IB school cluster to a Jumeirah Islands address.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

A larger group of international schools including continuum IB provision. The longest regular commute for a family here, and the reason evening sessions beat late-afternoon ones.

Jumeirah Village Triangle and Circle

Inland and slightly further from the coast road, with Sunmarke School offering the Diploma. A useful alternative school map for families weighing a move within the area.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the programme, subject and level

Programme first, because the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma need different tutors. Then subject, then Higher or Standard Level, then what the last marked work actually said. That is enough to brief a specialist properly and it takes one message rather than a form.

  2. 02

Test the match against the six points

Use the table above in the trial session. Command terms, criteria, paper structures, internal assessment, the core, and the honesty boundary. A tutor who can answer all six has worked in this programme; one who cannot has not, whatever their subject credentials say.

  3. 03

Hear the availability position before booking

If the combination you want is scarce, you are told with a date rather than a reassurance. If the tutor who fits is based outside the UAE and teaches on Gulf Standard Time, you are told that too, because you are entitled to know who is teaching your child and from where.

  4. 04

Fix a slot that survives the journey home

With no school inside Jumeirah Islands, your child arrives home later than peers in communities with one. Plan for 17:00 or 17:30 rather than 16:30, and consider 19:30 for essay and Theory of Knowledge work with a second-year student.

Review on marked work at six sessions

We look at timed work and marked tasks rather than impressions, then decide whether to continue, add a subject, move to coursework coaching or stop. Stopping is a legitimate outcome and better reached deliberately than by drifting out of the habit.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Programme knowledge treated as the first filter

A tutor is selected for understanding command terms, criterion marking, paper structures, internal assessment and the core, not only for subject knowledge. In the IB that distinction decides whether a term of teaching changes a grade or just adds content.

A test you can apply to any provider

The six points in the table work on us as readily as on anyone else. We would rather you used them and hired someone else than paid a confident generalist to teach a Higher Level course and discovered the gap four weeks in.

Honest about the format

Lessons are live online. There are no UAE home visits and no UAE centre, and we say so on the page rather than in the small print. If your child genuinely needs someone in the room, we will tell you to hire locally and what the market charges.

Rates published with their source

Every AED figure here belongs to the provider or survey that published it, read in October 2026. Three of the six strongest competitor pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars at families who pay in dirhams.

The core taken seriously

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS are where Diploma points are quietly lost, and they are what generalist tutors handle worst. We coach research question design, argument structure and the deadline plan, which content teaching never touches.

No claimed approvals and no invented numbers

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, IB, Cambridge or Pearson approval and claims none. There is no self-asserted rating on this page and no statistic without its source attached.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Islands: your questions answered

Six questions aside, what single answer tells us a tutor is the real thing?+

Ask six things: how an 'evaluate' answer differs from an 'outline' answer, which criteria the relevant assessment uses and what each rewards, the components and weightings at your child's level, how internal assessment is marked and moderated, when the Extended Essay question should be agreed, and what they will do with your child's draft. A specialist answers all six without hesitating. A subject-only tutor hedges on criteria and offers to improve the writing, which is the answer that matters most.

Do your tutors come to houses inside Jumeirah Islands?+

No. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; our in-person service runs in India only, and there is no office or centre here either. Lessons for Jumeirah Islands families are live online, one tutor to one student, on Gulf Standard Time. We target the home-tutor search phrase because that is what parents type, and then say plainly what the service is. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180-500 an hour including travel if presence in the room is essential.

Are there many IB-trained tutors living in this part of Dubai?+

Fewer than you would expect, and the reason is arithmetic rather than geography. The International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum, so IB families are a minority of a large market. Narrow it to one subject at Higher Level, available at six in the evening, and willing to drive into a gated community off Sheikh Zayed Road, and the pool is very small indeed.

Can a tutor who teaches A Level handle an IB course instead?+

Sometimes, but it should be tested rather than assumed. The content overlaps substantially; the assessment does not. IB courses carry criterion-marked internal assessment, specific command-term expectations, and component structures that differ between Higher and Standard Level. A strong A Level teacher who has never read an internal assessment descriptor will teach the subject well and the assessment badly. Ask what they will do with an internal assessment draft and whether they can name the criteria.

Why does the Extended Essay go wrong so often?+

Because the research question is usually the problem and it is settled in the first fortnight. A question too broad to answer in 4,000 words produces description rather than argument, and no amount of later drafting rescues it. A tutor can legitimately teach question design, argument structure and referencing, and give feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor cannot write any part of it. If a provider offers to, that tells you what else they are willing to do.

What time should sessions start for a family here?+

Plan for 17:00 to 17:30 on weekdays. Because no school sits inside Jumeirah Islands, every child travels out and comes back later than peers in communities with a school at the centre, typically arriving home between 15:40 and 16:50 depending on the school and route. Second-year Diploma students often work better at 19:30, after dinner, especially for Theory of Knowledge and essay work. Keep Saturday morning for a full timed paper.

Does the metro station near Jumeirah Lakes Towers help with tutoring?+

Not really, and it is worth saying so because it looks like it should. The Red Line station on the edge of Jumeirah Lakes Towers is a short drive from Jumeirah Islands and is genuinely useful for after-school activities and for an older teenager's independence. It makes no difference to a tutoring timetable, because online lessons happen at home and an in-home tutor arrives by car in the same traffic everyone else is in.

What does a tutor do about Theory of Knowledge?+

Teach the thing students find hardest, which is constructing and testing a claim about knowledge rather than stating what they believe. TOK is assessed through an exhibition and a prescribed-title essay, and the failure mode is sincere opinion rather than argument. A tutor can teach argument structure, counter-claim handling and the use of examples, and can comment on the student's own drafts. A tutor cannot write any of it, and we will not.

Should we book a single diagnostic session before committing?+

Often yes, and some families find it is all they need. One session with a specialist, working from your child's own marked work, establishes where they actually sit against the level they are entered for and what the first six weeks would target. You get a written read and no obligation. It is also the cheapest way to test whether the tutor is the specialist they appear to be, using the six questions above.

Which IB subjects are hardest to find a specialist for?+

Physics at Higher Level, Chemistry at Higher Level, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and Computer Science. These are the subjects where a generalist runs out of depth about four weeks in, and the ones where a home-visit requirement hurts most, because almost nobody who can teach them has a spare evening and a willingness to drive. In the spring term there can be a wait even online, and we quote a date rather than a hope.

Is online teaching a problem for a student who is already struggling?+

It depends on why they are struggling. If the cause is a gap in understanding or weak exam technique, the format is irrelevant and the tutor's expertise is everything. If the cause is that they will not start work without an adult in the room, the format matters a great deal and a local in-home tutor may genuinely be the better answer. Tell us which it is at the consultation; we would rather say so than take the booking.

Do private tutors in the UAE need a licence?+

Yes. Individuals providing private lessons need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and applied for through MoHRE's app, website or e-services, with a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged fifteen to eighteen. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Which IB schools do children from Jumeirah Islands usually attend?+

There is no school inside the community, so families travel. The schools named most often by households here are Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills and Emirates International School Meadows nearby, Nord Anglia International School Dubai and GEMS World Academy Dubai in Al Barsha, Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim and Sunmarke School in Jumeirah Village Triangle. We have no affiliation with any of them; confirm current programmes on KHDA's own school listing.

Can sessions follow us when we travel?+

Yes, provided we know the week before. Lessons follow whichever time zone you are in, and because nobody has to drive anywhere a change is a slot swap rather than a renegotiation. Many families in this community travel during school breaks and either pause entirely or use a short intensive block, which is particularly useful in the summer before the first Diploma year. The weekly slot is held either way.

What happens if we are not satisfied after a few sessions?+

Tell us and we change the tutor rather than asking your child to persist. The free trial exists so the pairing is tested before you pay for a term, and fit failures are usually not about competence: a tutor who talks for fifty minutes can be entirely expert and wrong for a student who needs to be made to work. Judge the sessions on whether your child spoke, and on whether the tutor diagnosed rather than lectured.

Test the programme knowledge, not the postcode

If you are searching for an IB home tutor in Jumeirah Islands, the useful filter is not distance. Ask any tutor how an 'evaluate' answer differs from an 'outline' answer, which criteria the next assessment uses, and what they will do with your child's draft. Those three questions separate a specialist from a capable generalist in about four minutes, and they work on us as readily as on anyone else. Our lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial session before anything is paid.
