IB Maths Tutor in Jumeirah Park

The first thing an IB maths tutor in Jumeirah Park needs to establish is which course your child is actually taking. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are different subjects with different papers, different calculator rules and different university consequences. This page sets out both, the paper weightings at each level, the twenty marks in the exploration, and how we fit a session into a Jumeirah Park weekday.

  • AA and AI treated as separate courses, matched separately
  • Paper 1 taught as a non-calculator discipline from the start
  • Exploration coached against the criteria, never written for a student

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Park

Which maths course is your child actually taking?

There are four IB mathematics courses, not one: Analysis and Approaches at Standard and Higher Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Standard and Higher Level. Parents routinely describe all four as 'IB maths', and tutors occasionally do too. They have different content, different calculator rules, different paper structures and, most importantly, different consequences for what your child can apply to study. Establishing which one is the first useful minute of any conversation.

The distinction is not difficulty, although that is how it is usually explained. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented, with a non-calculator Paper 1 that rewards exact manipulation. Applications and Interpretation is calculator-active throughout, statistics-heavy, and built around modelling real contexts. A strong student can find AI's interpretation demands harder than AA's algebra, and a student placed in AA because it sounded better can struggle for two years for no gain.

In Jumeirah Park the practical question arrives at sixteen, because the community's own school runs the British curriculum and most local Diploma students move to a continuum or dual-pathway school in Al Barsha, Jumeirah Village Triangle or The Meadows. That transition is also when the AA or AI decision is made, often quickly, and sometimes on the basis of an IGCSE grade rather than a conversation about degree requirements.

The second thing worth knowing early is how much of the grade is not an exam. The exploration carries roughly a fifth of the mark at every level and across both courses, and its deadline is set internally by the school, usually a year before the papers. Students behave as though it is a side task. Twenty marks decided by presentation, communication, engagement, reflection and the mathematics used is not a side task, and it is the most coachable part of the course.

What IB Gram provides is a tutor matched to the exact course and level, teaching live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. For mathematics specifically, online works well: a shared screen with a past paper, a graphing tool and a visible working surface beats two people over one sheet of paper most evenings.

It is also worth saying that mathematics is the Diploma subject where starting early changes the most. Content compounds: calculus sits on algebra, and a student who is shaky on rearrangement in September is shaky on integration by substitution in February regardless of how well the integration was taught. That is why a single weekly hour from the first term usually outperforms a block of intensive sessions in the second year, and costs less in total.

The rest of this page is the detail a Jumeirah Park parent needs in order to judge any maths tutor, ours included: how the papers are weighted, where marks are actually lost topic by topic, what the twenty marks in the exploration are awarded for, what the published Dubai rates are for a maths specialist, and when a session can realistically happen given the school run in this community.

Mathematics support for Jumeirah Park families clusters at three points, and the work looks different at each. The step that causes most trouble is the one into the Diploma at sixteen.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Students lose marks for communication and for failing to generalise a pattern, not for arithmetic. A tutor needs the school's own task sheet and criterion descriptors to be useful here, because the standard is set by the school's boundaries.

Jumeirah Park MYP students usually travel to Al Barsha or Jumeirah Village for school, so sessions here sit at 17:00 or later. The final MYP year is the cheapest point at which to build the algebraic fluency the Diploma assumes.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Analysis and Approaches

Algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, statistics and probability, with Higher Level adding proof by induction, complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form, Maclaurin series and vector geometry. Paper 1 permits no calculator, so exact manipulation has to be fast and reliable. This is the course most engineering, physics, mathematics and economics degrees expect.

Dubai Diploma candidates sit the May session. For AA Higher Level the useful start point is the autumn of the first Diploma year, because the proof and calculus content compounds and a gap in September is a gap in March unless someone closes it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Applications and Interpretation

Number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus, all calculator-active, with Higher Level adding graph theory, more advanced statistics and modelling. The course rewards interpretation in context: a correct regression with no comment on what it means scores poorly.

AI is a legitimate route into many degrees and a poor fit for a few. Before choosing it, check the published entry requirements of the universities your child is considering in the UAE and abroad, because some specify Analysis and Approaches for quantitative degrees.

DPBoth courses, both levels

The mathematics exploration

A piece of independent mathematical writing, internally assessed and externally moderated, worth 20 marks across five criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. It is the single most coachable component in the course, and the one most often left too late.

School deadlines for the exploration typically fall a year before the written papers. A Jumeirah Park family's most common mistake is treating the May session as the deadline that matters when the internal one arrives much sooner.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a maths tutor actually works on, by course and topic. Use these as a test of any tutor: a specialist can say immediately where each one costs students marks.

Analysis and Approaches HL: algebra and proof

Higher Level

Proof by induction, binomial expansion, partial fractions and complex numbers in both Cartesian and polar form. Marks go missing in the setup rather than the calculation: an induction proof with no clear inductive step scores badly however correct the algebra is. Non-calculator Paper 1 makes accuracy a trained skill rather than a talent.

Analysis and Approaches: calculus

HL and SL

Differentiation, integration, kinematics and, at Higher Level, implicit differentiation, related rates, integration by substitution and parts, and differential equations. The commonest failure is technique selection: students who can perform every method individually but cannot tell which integral needs which.

Analysis and Approaches: functions and trigonometry

HL and SL

Transformations, inverse and composite functions, exponentials and logarithms, trigonometric identities and equations. Students lose marks on domain and range, and on solving trigonometric equations over a stated interval where they find one solution and stop.

Applications and Interpretation: statistics

HL and SL

Data presentation, correlation and regression, probability distributions and, at Higher Level, hypothesis testing and more advanced inference. The marks sit in interpretation: naming what a gradient means in the context, and whether a correlation justifies the claim being made.

Applications and Interpretation: modelling

HL and SL

Fitting functions to real data, choosing a model and justifying the choice, then evaluating its limitations. Calculator-active throughout, which means efficiency with the graphing tool is part of the grade. Students who treat the calculator as an answer machine rather than an exploratory tool underperform.

Applications and Interpretation HL: graph theory and extensions

Higher Level

Graphs and networks, adjacency matrices, minimum spanning trees and shortest-path algorithms, plus complex numbers in a modelling context. These topics are unfamiliar to most parents and are taught late in the course, which is why they are often under-revised relative to their weight.

Paper 3 technique

Higher Level, both courses

Two extended problem-solving questions on a single paper, worth a fifth of the Higher Level grade on the standard published structure. Students meet the format rarely and lose marks by abandoning a long question after one blocked step. This is trainable, and it is the component most often ignored until spring.

The exploration

All four courses

Twenty marks across five criteria. A tutor may teach the criteria, help narrow a topic, teach mathematical writing and comment on the student's own drafts. A tutor may not write, part-write or supply any of it, and the strongest explorations are the ones where the mathematics is slightly simpler and genuinely owned.

Bridging from IGCSE or MYP

Pre-Diploma

Surds, indices, rearrangement, simultaneous equations and algebraic fractions, done quickly and exactly without a calculator. This is what Analysis and Approaches assumes on day one and what a good IGCSE grade does not guarantee. A term of this before the Diploma starts outperforms the same hours spent in the second year.

Quantitative support for other subjects

HL and SL

Physics calculations, economics diagrams and quantitative questions, and business finance all fail for mathematical reasons more often than subject ones. A maths tutor who understands where these overlap can fix a physics problem that no amount of physics revision would resolve.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns that work for IB mathematics specifically, all delivered live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly from the first Diploma year

One fixed hour a week per course, running alongside the school's teaching order. Mathematics compounds more than any other Diploma subject: a weak September topic is a weak March topic unless someone closes it. This is the pattern that keeps Higher Level viable and it costs less in total than a second-year intervention.

  • Same tutor, same slot, tracked against the school's sequence
  • Paper 1 non-calculator work from the start, not just before mocks
  • Short written note after each session
  • Frequency rises around mocks and the final term

Exploration coaching block

A defined run of sessions around the school's internal exploration deadline: narrowing the topic, choosing mathematics the student can genuinely own, teaching mathematical writing, and giving feedback on their own drafts against the five criteria. The tutor reads and comments; the tutor writes nothing.

  • Topic narrowed before any mathematics is attempted
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the published descriptors
  • Feedback on the student's draft only
  • Timed to the internal deadline, not the exam

Paper-focused intensive

Two or three sessions a week in the final weeks, built entirely on past papers under timed conditions and marked together. For Higher Level that includes Paper 3 specifically, because students meet its format too rarely to be fluent in it. The topic list is rebuilt weekly from errors, not from the syllabus order.

  • Papers under time, then marked line by line
  • Separate attention to Paper 3 at Higher Level
  • Error log drives the next session's content
  • Can run through school holidays and across time zones

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jumeirah Park

01

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation

This is the decision that most affects a Diploma mathematician, and it is frequently made on the wrong grounds. The common framing is that Analysis and Approaches is the harder course and Applications and Interpretation the easier one. That is not how the two differ. AA is algebraic and proof-based with a non-calculator paper; AI is applied, statistical and calculator-active, and it asks for interpretation that many algebraically strong students find genuinely difficult.

The consequential difference is admissions. A number of quantitative degrees -- engineering, physics, mathematics, and some economics and computer science programmes -- specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Others accept either. Because requirements vary by university and by year, the only reliable method is to read the published entry requirements for the specific courses your child is considering, in the UAE and abroad, before the choice is locked.

The second factor is the student. AA Higher Level assumes complete fluency with algebraic manipulation and an appetite for abstraction. AI Higher Level assumes comfort with data, modelling and written interpretation. A student who enjoys a clean algebraic result and dislikes writing about context is badly placed in AI, and the reverse is equally true. Neither is the respectable choice; the mismatch is the problem.

If your child is already in the wrong course, a move is usually possible early in the first Diploma year and rarely sensible later. A single diagnostic session with a maths specialist, working at the standard of the course in question, will tell you more than a term of worrying. The table below sets out the comparison in the terms that actually matter.

02

How the papers are weighted, and what that changes

Weightings are the fastest way to test whether a tutor knows the course, and the fastest way for a parent to allocate revision time sensibly. On the standard published structure, Standard Level in both courses is examined by two papers plus the exploration, and Higher Level by three papers plus the exploration. The exploration carries a fifth of the grade at every level, which is more than most students behave as though it does.

At Higher Level, Paper 3 is the component students are least prepared for. It consists of extended problem-solving questions rather than the shorter items of Papers 1 and 2, and because schools set it rarely in internal assessments, students meet the format a handful of times before the real thing. A student who abandons a long question after one blocked step loses a disproportionate number of marks.

The implication for a weekly session is concrete. At Standard Level, time splits between calculator and non-calculator technique and the exploration. At Higher Level, the same plus deliberate Paper 3 practice from the spring of the first Diploma year rather than the last six weeks of the second. That sequencing decision is worth more than any number of extra hours in April.

Weightings and structures are set by the IB and are revised from time to time, and the IB's own subject guide is the authority. Confirm the current structure with your child's teacher or the school's copy of the guide rather than relying on any tutoring page, this one included. The table shows the structure as commonly published, with that caution attached.

The twenty marks in the exploration, criterion by criterion

Nobody else in this market publishes this, and it is the most useful page of information a Diploma maths student can have. The exploration is marked against five criteria with a total of twenty marks, and the distribution explains why the best explorations are often mathematically modest. Only part of the mark is for the mathematics itself; the rest is for how the work is presented, communicated, owned and reflected upon.

That changes the strategy completely. A student who picks a topic too ambitious to understand properly scores badly on personal engagement and reflection even when the mathematics is impressive, because they cannot say anything original about it. A student who takes a topic they genuinely care about, uses mathematics at the right level for their course, and reflects honestly on what the model does and does not capture, scores well.

The second common failure is mathematical communication: inconsistent notation, undefined variables, graphs without labelled axes, and a structure that reads like a worked solution rather than a piece of writing. These are easy to fix and worth several marks. The third is reflection written as a conclusion -- restating the result instead of evaluating the approach and its limitations.

Criterion labels, descriptors and mark allocations are set by the IB and change between syllabus cycles, so confirm them against your school's copy of the current subject guide. The table below reflects the commonly published allocation. A tutor may teach all of this and give feedback on the student's drafts; a tutor may not write any part of the exploration, and we will not.

MATHEMATICS EXPLORATION CRITERIA AS COMMONLY PUBLISHED - CONFIRM AGAINST THE CURRENT SUBJECT GUIDE

Where marks actually disappear, topic by topic

  • Content gaps usually predate the Diploma and stay fixed once closed
  • Technique problems need marked papers, not more teaching
  • Unshown working on multi-step questions forfeits method marks
  • Early rounding costs accuracy marks across whole papers
  • Paper 3 stamina at Higher Level is a trainable skill

General advice about practising more is useless. What a maths tutor should be able to do in the first session is name the specific, diagnosable failures in your child's work and say which are content problems and which are technique problems. They need different responses, and the difference is usually visible on one marked paper.

Content problems are gaps: a topic never properly learned, often from before the Diploma. Surds, indices, rearrangement and algebraic fractions are the usual culprits for Analysis and Approaches students, and they surface as calculus errors two years later. These take a few focused sessions and then stay fixed.

Technique problems are different. A student who can perform every individual method but picks the wrong one, who sets up a question incorrectly and then executes perfectly, who rounds too early, or who stops a long Paper 3 question at the first obstacle, has a technique problem. These need marked past papers and a conversation about each decision, not more content teaching.

The way to tell them apart is to look at a marked paper with the student and ask, question by question, what they were thinking. A content gap produces a blank or a wrong method. A technique problem produces a correct method applied to a misread question, or a right answer rounded into a wrong one. The student almost always knows which it was, and nobody asks them.

The third category is exam conduct: running out of time, not showing working on a multi-step question where the final answer is wrong and no method marks are available, or mis-setting the calculator. These are the cheapest marks to recover in the whole course and the ones most often left unaddressed because they feel too trivial to teach.

05

Fitting a maths session into a Jumeirah Park weekday

Mathematics is the subject where the hour you choose matters most, because accuracy degrades with tiredness in a way that essay writing does not. A student doing non-calculator algebra at nine in the evening will make arithmetic errors they would not make at half past four, and will conclude they are bad at maths rather than tired.

In this community the school run sets the window. Dubai schools finish between roughly 14:30 and 15:30, and a Jumeirah Park bus route serving Al Barsha or Jumeirah Village gets most students home between 15:20 and 16:40 depending on district and route. There is no metro station inside Jumeirah Park, so the nearest Route 2020 stations at Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens play no useful part in a tutoring timetable.

That produces a simple rule for maths specifically: take the earliest slot your household can genuinely sustain. Students at the school inside the community can hold 16:00, which is the best maths hour available to anyone here. Bussed students should aim for 17:00 or 17:30 rather than 16:30, because a session that starts before the student has eaten is a session spent on mistakes.

For long work, use the weekend. A Saturday morning slot is the only place in the week where a full timed paper genuinely fits, and marking it on Sunday is where the learning happens. During Ramadan, school hours shorten and a post-Iftar or late-morning weekend session usually works better than anything in the late afternoon; we reschedule rather than cancel.

What a maths specialist costs in this market

Mathematics is the most-tutored subject in Dubai and the one where the price spread is widest, so it is worth knowing what each band buys. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65, which buys homework supervision rather than Higher Level teaching. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase quotes around AED 270 for specialist work.

Bestimate's Dubai survey puts specialist IB and IGCSE tuition at AED 200-450 or more, in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 and independent home tutors at AED 200-500. BartyED's premium examiner-led tier reaches AED 650. On a monthly basis, Bestimate estimates AED 240-600 for a weekly budget arrangement, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. All of these are the providers' or survey's own figures, read in October 2026.

Where maths differs from other subjects is that the cheap end is less useful. Supervision helps a student who will not start their homework; it does not help a student who cannot tell which integral needs substitution. For Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level in particular, the qualified-specialist band is the realistic minimum, and paying an in-home travel premium on top of it buys nothing mathematical.

We publish no rate card here because the right figure depends on the course, the level and the weeks remaining. The honest guidance is to start with the free trial session, commit to six sessions rather than twenty, and judge on marked timed work. Discounted long packages move the risk to you before the match has been tested, which is the commonest complaint in this market.

The exploration and the academic honesty line

  • Teaching the criteria and giving feedback on drafts: yes
  • Writing, rewriting or supplying mathematics: never
  • Subject guides and past papers: cited and linked, not supplied
  • Any promise of a 7: not something an honest tutor will make

The mathematics exploration is where the tutoring market in this city behaves worst, because it is a written piece with a deadline and a mark attached. One operator in this SERP sells completed internal assessments outright at four-figure prices. That is an academic-integrity breach, an IB malpractice trigger, and the consequence lands on the student rather than the seller.

The legitimate version is narrow and genuinely effective. A tutor can explain the five criteria and what each rewards, help the student narrow a topic to something they can own, teach the conventions of mathematical writing, show what a labelled graph and a defined variable look like, and read the student's draft and say which descriptor band it currently meets and what is missing. The student then fixes it.

A tutor cannot write, part-write, rewrite to completion or supply mathematics for the exploration, and we will not. We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes; those are cited and linked, and your child's school holds licensed access to what they need.

Parents sometimes ask where the line sits in practice, because it sounds finer than it is. It is not fine. A tutor saying 'criterion B wants your variables defined before you use them, and three of yours are not' is teaching. A tutor adding the definitions is not. The first produces a student who will define variables for the rest of their life; the second produces a document and a risk.

If you are comparing maths tutors in this area, ask what they will do with an exploration draft. An answer that describes criterion feedback is the right one. An answer that offers to improve the writing or tidy up the mathematics is the wrong one, and it is the answer that puts a Diploma at risk.

Regulator context and what we do not claim

  • KHDA regulates Dubai; ADEK Abu Dhabi; SPEA Sharjah
  • We hold no regulator or board approval and claim none
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and lasts two years
  • Mandatory UAE subjects sit on top of the Diploma load

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has ADEK and Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, with the Ministry of Education supervising private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Every school named on this page sits under KHDA.

IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and does not hold a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is the specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai. We explain what these bodies do because parents ask, not because any of them endorses us.

On the tutor side, individuals providing private lessons in the UAE need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years. u.ae states that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat quoted amounts with suspicion.

There is also a timetable point that affects mathematics planning in Dubai specifically. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with KHDA calculating instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit. In a Diploma week already carrying six subjects and the core, that is real pressure, and it is why one properly used maths hour beats three scattered ones.

Where we tutor

Where IB maths students around Jumeirah Park live and study

Maths sessions are the ones families most want early in the evening, because tired students make arithmetic errors. That makes the school run decisive, and it varies by community.

Jumeirah Park

Nine districts of villas. Students at the school inside the community are home by about 15:20 and can hold a 16:00 maths slot, which is the best hour in the day for Paper 1 practice.

Jumeirah Islands

No school inside the gates, so every student is driven or bussed out and home later. For a maths session that matters: 17:30 is more realistic than 16:30 and produces better accuracy.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Sunmarke School sits here and offers the Diploma, which makes JVT the nearest real concentration of AA and AI candidates to Jumeirah Park and a frequent source of first-year enquiries.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Where most of the IB continuum schools in this half of Dubai are. Buses back to Jumeirah Park arrive 16:00 to 16:40, so these families settle on 17:00 or later.

The Meadows and Emirates Hills

Emirates International School Meadows has a long-established Diploma population, and maths enquiries from here tend to arrive earlier in the first Diploma year than from elsewhere.

Jumeirah Golf Estates

Long outward commutes and low density. Families here reach the travel arithmetic quickly and tend to book a fixed evening slot for the whole year rather than negotiating week to week.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Dense housing with a mixed school map and a reasonable MYP population. The constraint is a quiet room rather than a commute, which for mental arithmetic work matters more than it sounds.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the course and the level

Tell us whether it is Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and Higher or Standard Level. Those four combinations need four different tutor briefs. If you are not sure, your child's maths teacher will confirm it in a sentence, and it is worth the email before anything else happens.

  2. 02

Send one piece of marked work

A marked paper or a recent assessment is worth more than any description of the problem. It shows whether the issue is a content gap, a technique failure or exam conduct, and those three need different responses. We read it before the trial session rather than spending the trial discovering it.

Take the earliest slot you can sustain

For mathematics specifically, book the earliest hour your household genuinely supports. Accuracy degrades with tiredness, and a late session produces errors that look like weakness. In this community that means 16:00 for the in-community school and 17:00 or 17:30 for bussed students.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial session

A full lesson with the matched tutor on your child's current material, no payment and no card details. Use it to test them: ask for the paper weightings at your child's level and what each exploration criterion rewards. If they cannot answer, tell us and we change the match.

  5. 05

Review on marked papers at six sessions

We look at timed work rather than impressions: whether the question types that lost marks now score, and whether your child can choose a method unprompted. If not, the match, the frequency or our diagnosis changes. Buying more hours against a wrong diagnosis is the most common waste in maths tutoring.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

AA and AI treated as different subjects

A tutor is matched to the exact course and level, because a strong Applications and Interpretation teacher is not automatically useful for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level. Conflating the four combinations is the commonest mismatch in Dubai maths tutoring and it stays invisible for about a month.

Paper 1 trained as a separate discipline

Non-calculator work is a skill that needs building from the first term, not revising in April. Sessions include exact manipulation under time from early in the first Diploma year, because that is where Analysis and Approaches marks are won and lost.

Paper 3 practised before the final weeks

Higher Level students meet the extended problem-solving format too rarely to be fluent in it, and lose a disproportionate number of marks by abandoning long questions. We build it into the spring of the first Diploma year rather than treating it as revision.

Exploration coached, never written

We teach the five criteria, help narrow a topic the student can own, teach mathematical writing and give feedback on their drafts. We write none of it. That limit is published here because several operators in this market do not observe it and the risk falls on your child.

Rates quoted with their source

Every AED figure on this page belongs to the provider or survey that published it, read in October 2026. Three of the strongest competitor pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars at families who pay in dirhams.

Scheduled for accuracy, not convenience

We push for the earliest slot your household can hold, because mathematical accuracy degrades with tiredness. This page publishes the school-run arrival pattern for that reason: the hour chosen affects the work more in maths than in any other subject.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Park: your questions answered

We have to pick between the two maths courses this term. How do we decide?+

Decide on two grounds: the degree requirement and the student. A number of quantitative degrees, including engineering, physics and mathematics, specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, while others accept either, so read the published entry requirements for the specific courses your child is considering. Then match the student: AA suits those who like exact algebraic results, AI those comfortable with data, modelling and written interpretation. AI is not the easier course; it is a different one, and the mismatch rather than the difficulty is what causes trouble.

How are the marks split between the papers in IB maths?+

On the commonly published structure, Standard Level is examined by two papers plus the exploration, with the papers carrying around forty per cent each and the exploration around twenty. Higher Level has three papers plus the exploration, with Papers 1 and 2 at around thirty per cent each, Paper 3 around twenty and the exploration around twenty. Weightings are set by the IB and revised between syllabus cycles, so confirm the current structure with your child's teacher or the school's copy of the subject guide rather than from any tutoring page.

What are the twenty marks in the maths exploration awarded for?+

On the commonly published allocation, five criteria share twenty marks: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics, with the mathematics itself carrying the largest single share and the other four together carrying more. That is why modest mathematics genuinely owned outscores ambitious mathematics the student cannot discuss. Criterion labels and allocations change between syllabus cycles, so confirm them against your school's current subject guide. A tutor may teach all five and comment on drafts, and may write none of it.

Why does Paper 1 change how you teach Analysis and Approaches?+

Because no calculator is permitted. Every manipulation has to be exact and fast, which makes algebraic fluency a trained skill rather than a by-product of understanding. A student who can do the mathematics with a calculator and cannot do it without one will lose marks across a whole paper for reasons unrelated to comprehension. The implication is that non-calculator work belongs in weekly sessions from the first term of the Diploma, not in a revision block in the spring of the second year.

My child was strong at IGCSE maths but is struggling in the Diploma. Why?+

Usually because the Diploma assumes fluency that a good IGCSE grade does not guarantee. Surds, indices, rearrangement, algebraic fractions and simultaneous equations have to be fast and exact, and Analysis and Approaches builds calculus on top of them within weeks. A student who was accurate but slow at IGCSE now runs out of time and makes errors under pressure. A few focused sessions on that foundation, done properly, usually produces more improvement than weeks of work on the new content.

Do you send a maths tutor to our villa in Jumeirah Park?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all; our in-person service runs in India only. IB mathematics tuition for Jumeirah Park families is delivered live online, one tutor to one student, on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared working surface and past papers on screen. For mathematics that format is genuinely strong, because both people can write where the other can see it. If presence in the room is essential, the Dubai market charges roughly AED 180-500 an hour for in-home visits including travel.

What time of day is best for a maths session?+

The earliest hour your household can sustain. Arithmetic accuracy degrades with tiredness more visibly than essay quality does, and a student making careless errors at nine in the evening concludes they are weak at maths rather than tired. In this community that means 16:00 for students at the school inside Jumeirah Park and 17:00 or 17:30 for those bussed in from Al Barsha or Jumeirah Village. Keep full timed papers for Saturday morning, which is the only ninety-minute block in the week.

Is one hour a week enough for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level?+

One a week from the start of the first Diploma year is the pattern that works, rising to two or three per week in the final weeks before the May session. Mathematics compounds more than any other Diploma subject, so a weak topic in September is still weak in March unless someone closes it. Families who start weekly and early usually need less total support than those who start intensively and late, and they also hold the earlier evening slots that are scarce in the spring term.

Can a tutor help if my child has picked the wrong maths course?+

A tutor cannot change the entry, but a single diagnostic session will tell you whether the concern is real. The tutor works at the standard of the course in question with the student and reports back on fluency and fit rather than on enthusiasm. Moves between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are usually possible early in the first Diploma year and rarely sensible later, so this is a conversation for the autumn term with the school rather than a decision to postpone.

Roughly what hourly figure should we budget for Diploma mathematics support?+

Published figures put a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors quoting IB from AED 200, and specialist IB tuition at AED 200-450 or more on Bestimate's survey, with TutorChase around AED 270. Budget providers advertise from AED 33-65, which buys supervision rather than Higher Level teaching. In-home visits run AED 180-500 including travel. Those are the providers' own figures read in October 2026. We publish no rate card because the right number depends on the course, the level and the weeks left.

Is Paper 3 really worth separate practice?+

Yes, and it is the most under-prepared component in Higher Level mathematics. It consists of extended problem-solving questions rather than the shorter items students meet all year, and schools rarely set that format internally, so students arrive unfamiliar with it. The characteristic failure is abandoning a long question after a single blocked step, which forfeits marks that were still available further down. Building it into sessions from the spring of the first Diploma year is worth more than any number of extra hours in April.

What should my child choose as an exploration topic?+

Something they can genuinely talk about, using mathematics at the level of their course rather than above it. The marks reward personal engagement, reflection and communication alongside the mathematics itself, so an ambitious topic the student cannot discuss critically scores worse than a modest one they own. Start from an interest, find the mathematics inside it, and check with the teacher that the mathematics is appropriate for the course. Begin at least a term before the school's internal deadline, not three weeks before.

Does my child need a particular graphing calculator?+

The school specifies the permitted models and the exam regulations require memory to be cleared, so follow the school's instruction rather than buying on a recommendation. The point worth making is that familiarity is part of the grade: Applications and Interpretation is calculator-active throughout, and a student who is slow with the model loses marks on time rather than on mathematics. Practising with the exact device, under time, is part of what sessions should cover in the term before the papers.

Would the same person be able to take physics as well as maths?+

At Standard Level often yes, and the overlap is genuinely useful: many physics errors are mathematical ones, and a tutor who sees both can fix a physics problem that physics revision would not resolve. At Higher Level we usually advise two tutors, because genuine depth in both Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Physics Higher Level is rare, and a tutor stretched across both tends to be strong in one. Two fixed evenings is also easier to protect than one long combined session.

Is it too late to start maths tutoring in the second Diploma year?+

Not too late, but more expensive per unit of improvement and more constrained by what is still available. If the exploration is already submitted, the work becomes technique and past papers, which responds quickly. If the problem is a foundational gap in algebra, closing it in the second year costs weeks that the revision programme needs. The honest answer depends on the marked evidence, and if we think the weeks remaining are too few for a subject to move meaningfully, we will say so rather than sell the hours.
