IB MYP Tutor in Dubai Silicon Oasis

An IB MYP tutor in Dubai Silicon Oasis is most useful at specific points in the year, and almost nobody knows where those points are. MYP does not run on a term-and-examination rhythm; it runs on unit cycles, each ending in criterion-marked tasks, with the Personal Project threaded through MYP 5. This page maps that calendar so a family knows when a session changes a grade and when it merely occupies an evening. Lessons run as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Silicon Oasis

MYP runs on unit cycles, not on terms

Most parents plan tutoring against a term-and-examination rhythm, because that is how the British and Indian curricula around Dubai Silicon Oasis work. MYP does not run that way. Each subject moves through units of inquiry, and each unit ends in one or more tasks marked against specific criteria. The reported grade is a conversion of criterion marks accumulated across those tasks, so the moment that matters is the fortnight before a task, not the week before a report.

That changes when a session is worth buying. A tutoring hour three days before a criterion-marked task, spent reading the task sheet and the criterion descriptor against the student's draft, can move a band. The same hour spent on general subject content in the middle of a unit usually moves nothing, because nothing is being assessed and the student has no vehicle for applying it. Families who learn this stop buying weekly and start buying at points.

The second calendar fact is that criterion marks accumulate. A low mark on the investigating criterion in October is not erased by a high one in March; it contributes to a total that is converted using boundaries published in the subject guide. So the useful intervention is early in the year, on whichever criterion is structurally weak, rather than late in response to a report that has already absorbed several tasks.

In MYP 5 a third thread appears. The Personal Project runs across the year with its own criteria and a supervisor at the school, and it depends far more on documentation accumulated as the work proceeds than on the visible outcome. Its milestones are set by the school, they vary along this corridor, and the single most valuable act is asking for all of them in the first weeks of the year rather than meeting them individually.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Across Silicon Oasis, Cedre Villas, Academic City, The Villa and Nad Al Sheba, MYP lessons are live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time. For criterion work the format fits the task: the assessment sheet, the criterion descriptor and the student's own draft sit side by side on a shared screen for both people at the same magnification.

What follows is the MYP calendar in detail. The unit cycle and where in it a session belongs. The accumulation problem and why early matters. The Personal Project timeline. What MYP eAssessment changes in the final year. And the window between MYP 5 and DP1, which is the cheapest intervention in the whole programme and the one nobody uses.

One framing to carry into the detail. Nothing here argues for buying more MYP tutoring than a family already does. It argues for buying it at different moments. Four sessions placed in the fortnight before four assessed tasks will usually move more criterion marks than a term of weekly hours spread across the units between them, and it costs considerably less. Timing is the whole lever in this programme, and almost nobody along this corridor is told where it sits.

At a glance

  • MYP runs on unit cycles ending in criterion-marked tasks, not on a term rhythm
  • A session in the fortnight before a task can move a band; mid-unit content work usually cannot
  • Criterion marks accumulate across the year, so early intervention is worth more than late
  • The Personal Project depends on documentation gathered as the work proceeds
  • The gap between MYP 5 and DP1 is the cheapest window in the whole programme
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP spans five years and the calendar shape changes substantially across them. These are the three phases a Silicon Oasis family is planning around.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14

MYP Years 1 to 3, roughly Years 7 to 9

The years in which criterion-referenced habits form. Students meet the four-criteria structure, learn what an inquiry question looks like, and either develop the habit of reflecting on their own work in writing or do not. The Community Project typically closes this phase, in MYP 3 or MYP 4 depending on the school.

This is the cheapest phase to intervene in, because nothing is at stake in certificate terms and the habits built here carry into MYP 5 and then into the Diploma. A term aimed at how to write a justification or a reflection is a small purchase with a long return, and almost nobody along this corridor makes it.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16

MYP Years 4 and 5, roughly Years 10 and 11

Criteria descriptors expect more independence and the subject demand rises. The Personal Project runs through MYP 5 against its own criteria with a school supervisor. Schools that enter students for MYP eAssessment do so at the end of MYP 5, leading to the IB MYP Certificate for those who meet the requirements.

The mathematics stream is also set in this phase, and standard and extended routes in MYP 4 and 5 feed into Applications and Interpretation and Analysis and Approaches respectively. A family thinking about Higher Level mathematics in the Diploma should be asking about the stream now rather than at the end of MYP 5.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme, after MYP

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The step is less about content than about timed external examination technique, which MYP rarely requires, and about mathematical fluency, which MYP assesses without drilling.

Deira International School, GEMS Modern Academy at Nad Al Sheba and Uptown International School in Mirdif all run the IB continuum, so students along this corridor often move from MYP 5 to DP1 within the same campus. That continuity means the transition gap is frequently assumed to be smaller than it is.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This grid is the eight MYP subject groups with the criterion that most often costs a band in each and when in a unit cycle to address it. Pick your child's weakest two and plan around their next task rather than around the term.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Bands are lost on analysing, because students summarise what a text says rather than examining how it achieves its effect. Best addressed in the fortnight before an analytical task, with the descriptor open.

Language Acquisition

MYP 1-5, by phase

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Students sit in phases rather than year groups, so the first question is which phase, and productive communication is where bands most often go.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Thinking critically loses the most bands: a student presents two views and offers no evaluation, which is a specific omission rather than a general weakness and is fixable in one session.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. That last criterion surprises parents most and is assessed, so a student writing nothing about impact leaves a whole criterion near the bottom.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Students with strong arithmetic lose bands on investigating patterns, because generalising and justifying a rule is a different activity from calculating.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Process documentation carries substantial weight, so the useful session is at the start of a unit establishing folder habits rather than at the end admiring the product.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. As in Design, the process journal is heavily weighted, and journal entries cannot be reconstructed convincingly once a unit has finished, which makes timing decisive.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written planning and reflection are assessed alongside performance, which is why a strong athlete can receive a middling grade.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

An independent project with criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, supervised at the school. Documentation accumulated as the work proceeds is what gets assessed, so the decisive sessions are at the goal-setting stage and on the process journal routine.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed against their own criteria covering evaluating, synthesising and reflecting across two or more subject groups. Students treat them as double workload rather than as distinct assessment, which costs bands in the synthesising criterion specifically.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes that fit the unit cycle rather than fighting it. All run as live one-to-one video lessons on Gulf Standard Time, with the task sheet, the criterion descriptor and the student's own work on a shared screen.

The pre-task session

One session in the fortnight before a criterion-marked task, spent reading the task sheet and the relevant descriptor against whatever the student has drafted. This is the point in the cycle where an hour can move a band, and it is the shape that makes MYP tutoring worth buying at all.

  • Booked against a task date, not a weekday
  • Task sheet and descriptor open beside the student's draft
  • Feedback on the student's own work only, never drafting
  • Repeatable before the next task in the same criterion

The criterion block

Four to six sessions aimed at one criterion in one subject across several units: investigating patterns in mathematics, reflecting on impacts in sciences, thinking critically in individuals and societies, analysing in language and literature. Because criterion marks accumulate, this is best bought early in the year.

  • One criterion, one subject, measured on successive tasks
  • The student's own marked work used as the material
  • Bought early, because marks accumulate across the year
  • Defined end point, so the cost is bounded

Personal Project checkpoints

Two or three sessions across MYP 5 placed against the school's own milestones: one on the goal and the inquiry, one on the process journal routine, one before submission. The tutor questions, explains criteria and gives feedback on what the student has written, and contributes nothing to the product.

  • Goal narrowed to something achievable and documentable
  • Journal habits established in the first weeks, not reconstructed
  • Criteria read aloud against the student's own entries
  • No product contribution, no drafting, no writing in the journal

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Silicon Oasis

01

The unit cycle, and where a session belongs in it

A MYP unit runs for several weeks around a statement of inquiry, with content and skills developed through it and one or more criterion-marked tasks at or near the end. The marks from those tasks are what accumulate into the reported grade. So the unit, not the term, is the planning unit, and the position within the unit determines whether a tutoring hour can do anything useful.

Early in a unit, a session can establish habits: how the process journal will be kept, what the inquiry question is actually asking, what the task will be marked against. Mid-unit, a session is mostly content support, which is worth having if the content is genuinely missing and worth very little if the problem is criterion-related. In the fortnight before the task, a session reading the descriptor against a draft is where bands move.

This is why weekly booking is often the wrong shape in MYP. Four sessions placed at the right points across two unit cycles will usually do more than twelve sessions spread evenly, because eight of those twelve fall at moments when nothing is being assessed and the student has no vehicle for applying what is taught. The exception is a subject where the content itself has genuinely been missed.

To plan this way a family needs the task dates, and task dates sit with the subject teachers rather than in a single published calendar. Asking each teacher, or the year coordinator, for the assessment dates across the next two units is a short request and it is what converts MYP tutoring from an expense into an intervention. The table below sets out what to buy at each point in a cycle.

02

Criterion marks accumulate, so early beats late

Each MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each marked on a scale from 1 to 8, and the school converts the accumulated totals to the reported 1 to 7 grade using boundaries published in the subject guide. Your child's teacher holds that guide and can show you the boundary table; we do not reproduce board documents, so work from the school's copy.

Accumulation has a consequence most parents do not realise. A low mark on one criterion in the first unit of the year is not cancelled by a strong mark later; it sits inside a total. So a student who is structurally weak on, say, the investigating criterion in sciences will carry four or five low marks on that criterion by the time a mid-year report arrives, and the reported grade will reflect all of them. Addressing it in October therefore influences far more marks than addressing it in March.

This inverts the usual tutoring instinct, which is to respond to a report. By the time a report shows the problem, most of the marks that produced it are already banked. The useful trigger is the first marked task of the year rather than the first report: if a student comes back with a 3 on one criterion in week five, that is the moment to act, while there are still five or six tasks to come in that criterion.

The practical version is simple. Ask to see each marked task as it is returned rather than waiting for a report, and look at the criterion letters rather than the overall comment. One low criterion mark in September is information. Four of them in February is a grade. The difference between those two situations is a single conversation held five months earlier, and it costs nothing to have.

03

The Personal Project timeline in MYP 5

The Personal Project runs across MYP 5 with its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, and a supervisor appointed at the school. Milestones are set by the school and vary between the IB schools along this corridor, which is why the first useful act is asking for all of them in the opening weeks of the year rather than meeting each one as it arrives.

The decisive factor is documentation rather than the visible outcome. A student who builds something impressive and keeps no process journal has very little evidence to be assessed against, and a journal cannot be reconstructed convincingly at the end because reconstructed entries read exactly like reconstructed entries. Establishing the routine in the first weeks is therefore worth more than any amount of help later, and it costs almost nothing.

The second common failure is a goal too large to achieve or document in the time available, chosen for ambition rather than feasibility. The criteria reward evidence of planning, skill application and reflection rather than scale, so a narrow goal pursued thoroughly outscores a grand one pursued partially. Narrowing is a single conversation at the start and it is the highest-value support available on the project.

The boundary here is strict and it is where this market most often bends. A tutor may discuss the goal, explain each criterion, ask the questions a good supervisor would ask, model a comparable project on an unrelated topic, read what the student has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not contribute to the product, draft the report, or write in the process journal. The project is the student's own work and is declared as such.

MYP eAssessment, and what it changes in the final year

  • Some schools enter MYP 5 for eAssessment and the MYP Certificate; others report internally
  • Where it applies, on-screen timed practice becomes relevant and has to be scheduled
  • Where it does not, examination practice is spending on an unassessed skill
  • Ask the school in September; the answer reshapes the whole final year

Some schools enter MYP 5 students for MYP eAssessment, which combines on-screen examinations with moderated ePortfolios and can lead to the IB MYP Certificate for students meeting the requirements. Others do not and report MYP grades internally. Which applies to your child's school changes the final year substantially, and many parents along this corridor do not know which situation they are in.

Where eAssessment applies, MYP 5 acquires an external examination element the rest of the programme does not have: timed, on-screen, with its own question styles. A student assessed only through coursework-style tasks for four years meets a genuinely new format in the final year, and the useful tutoring there is practice with the format rather than more content. That is also a calendar fact, because the practice has to happen before the sitting.

Where eAssessment does not apply, MYP 5 remains criterion-referenced throughout and the Personal Project is the main set-piece. In that case examination practice is spending on a skill that is not being assessed, and the sensible focus is the criterion profile across subjects plus the project. The difference between the two scenarios is large enough that a plan built for the wrong one wastes most of a year.

So ask the school one question in September: does this school enter students for MYP eAssessment and the MYP Certificate? The answer is a single line. It is also a useful test of a prospective tutor, because somebody who has worked in MYP schools in Dubai knows that practice varies and will ask you the same question before proposing anything at all.

05

The window between MYP 5 and DP1

The spring and summer at the end of MYP 5 is the cheapest and least used intervention window in the whole programme. The Personal Project is finished or finishing, the year's criterion marks are settled, and the Diploma has not yet started. Nothing is at stake and nothing competes, which is precisely why no family buys anything and why the ones who do describe DP1 completely differently.

Two gaps are worth closing in that window. The first is mathematical fluency. MYP assesses mathematics against criteria including real-life application and does not drill algebraic manipulation to automaticity, so a student may reach DP1 unable to rearrange a formula without hesitation. Both Diploma mathematics courses assume that fluency from the first term, and a student without it experiences the Diploma as a sudden difficulty rather than a gradual one.

The second is timed examination technique. Unless the school uses eAssessment, an MYP student may have had very little experience of timed external papers with mark schemes behind them, and the Diploma is substantially externally examined. Command terms, working conventions and time management are new skills rather than improved ones, and four or five sessions in the summer installs the basics before they are needed under pressure.

On the other side, MYP students usually arrive at DP1 unusually well prepared for internal assessment and reflective writing, because four years of criterion-referenced tasks and process journals is exactly the training the Diploma's internal assessments and Extended Essay require. That is worth saying, because the transition is often described as uniformly hard when it is in fact uneven, and the uneven parts are the ones to spend on.

Reading a criterion-marked task properly

  • A returned marked task is a complete free diagnosis, supplied several times a term
  • For each criterion, read the descriptor for the band above the mark awarded
  • Descriptors repeat across every unit, so the lesson transfers to the next task
  • Many families find no tutoring is needed once the descriptors have been read

The skill that changes outcomes in MYP is reading a returned task rather than reading a report. A marked task carries criterion letters, a mark out of 8 for each one assessed, and usually a descriptor the teacher has worked from. That is a complete diagnosis, supplied free, several times a term, and most households look at the overall comment and file the paper.

The method takes ten minutes. For each criterion assessed, find the mark and then read the descriptor for the band above it. The descriptor says in plain language what the student would have had to do differently, and it is almost always something specific: offer an evaluation, justify a generalisation, discuss a limitation, define a variable. That gap is the thing to work on before the next task in that criterion.

What makes this powerful is that the descriptors repeat. The same criterion appears in every unit of a subject, so a student who learns what the band above requires can apply it next time and the time after. A family that does this across two or three tasks often finds that no tutoring is required at all, because the problem was never understanding the subject; it was never having read what the marking was asking for.

Where tutoring does help is in the subjects where the descriptor language is genuinely opaque to a non-specialist, and in holding the student to it. A tutor reading the descriptor aloud against a draft, asking where the evaluation is and where the limitation is discussed, does in one hour what a term of content teaching does not. That is the whole argument for buying MYP support at a point in the cycle rather than weekly.

07

What a local MYP tutor can and cannot be expected to know

  • IB enrolment was 7 per cent of Dubai's private market in 2024-25, so the MYP pool is small
  • Most nearby tutors come from British or Indian curriculum backgrounds
  • Four questions test criterion knowledge, and need no programme knowledge to judge
  • Local supply is deepest near the IB continuum schools and thin elsewhere

A fair question, and the answer is uncomfortable. The International Baccalaureate accounted for 7 per cent of private school enrolment in Dubai in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on the UK curriculum and 26 per cent Indian. So most tutors available in Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Al Warqa or International City come from British or Indian curriculum backgrounds, and criterion-referenced marking is unfamiliar territory for them.

That does not make them poor teachers. A strong mathematics teacher can teach MYP mathematics content very well. What they frequently cannot do is look at a criterion profile and say that the problem is the investigating-patterns strand rather than the arithmetic, because they have never marked against that descriptor. And in MYP, that identification is most of the value, which is why the test to apply is specific rather than general.

The test is four questions. Name the four criteria for this subject. What is each marked out of? How does the school convert those marks to the reported grade? Which criterion do students in this subject most often lose bands on? Somebody who has taught and marked MYP answers all four in sentences. Somebody who has not will talk about the subject instead, which is the tell, and you need no knowledge of the programme to hear it.

Local supply is best in Nad Al Sheba and Mirdif, where IB continuum schools sit, and thin elsewhere along this corridor. That is a cohort-size fact rather than a comment on any community. Removing the driving radius from the filter list is what makes a tutor who has actually marked against these criteria reachable from Cedre Villas or The Villa, which is the practical reason this service is delivered online.

08

Starting from Dubai Silicon Oasis, and what we will not do

  • Send the criterion marks, two returned tasks and the next assessment dates
  • Free trial lesson, then a written note naming the weak criterion and the band above
  • No home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no IB or regulator accreditation claimed
  • No product contribution, no drafting, no writing in the process journal

Send five things: the subject, the MYP year, the four criterion marks from the most recent report, one or two returned marked tasks, and the dates of the next assessed tasks if you can get them. The marked tasks and the dates are what turn this from a weekly booking into an intervention. We then match a tutor to the subject group and run a free trial lesson as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, at no cost.

Afterwards you receive a written note naming which criterion is costing the grade, what the descriptor for the band above actually requires, and which point in the next unit cycle a session should sit at. For a good number of families that note is the whole value and the engagement ends there, which is a success rather than a lost sale. Where more is needed it should be a criterion block, bought early in the year.

The limits, stated. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. There is no UAE office, centre or branch and we claim none. We hold no IB or regulator accreditation. We do not supply MYP subject guides, task banks or assessment criteria documents as downloads, because reproducing them is not ours to do; your child's teacher holds the school's copy and that is the one to use.

And the project boundary, again, because it is the most-bent rule in this market. A tutor may question, explain criteria, model a comparable project on a different topic, read what the student has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not contribute to the product, draft the report or write in the process journal. Ask any provider to put that in writing before money moves, and keep the reply.

Where we tutor

Scheduling MYP sessions by community

MYP sessions are bought at points in a unit cycle rather than weekly, so what matters is whether a slot can be found at short notice. These notes cover what each community offers.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Self-contained, with a large British-curriculum secondary school and several Indian-curriculum schools inside the community. Students attending locally are home early, which makes a short-notice session in the fortnight before a task genuinely arrangeable rather than theoretical.

Cedre Villas and Silicon Gardens

Villa and townhouse stock within Silicon Oasis with short internal journeys. Useful for point-in-cycle booking, because a slot can be used at a different hour from week to week without the journey making it impossible.

Dubai International Academic City

University district immediately south. The budget tutoring band is well supplied here and is adequate for MYP content support and homework supervision, and is not the right band for reading a criterion profile or a task descriptor.

The Villa and Dubailand

Villa communities west of the corridor and more car-dependent. Later arrival home means the evening window carries most MYP work, which suits criterion discussion and draft review better than it would suit mathematics problem solving.

Nad Al Sheba

Two long-established schools on this stretch including an IB continuum school, so this is one of the few nearby communities with a genuine local MYP presence. Supply is still thin relative to British-curriculum tutoring, which reflects cohort size.

Mirdif

Twenty-five to forty minutes north-east depending on the hour, with its own IB continuum school. The nearest community with a comparable MYP population, and the local tutoring market there is correspondingly the deepest in the eastern suburbs.

Al Warqa and Al Rashidiya

Established housing between Silicon Oasis and Festival City with many tutors from British and Indian curriculum backgrounds. Capable teachers for whom criterion marking is unfamiliar territory, which is the specific risk this page exists to flag.

International City

Dense and price-sensitive north of the corridor, well supplied at the budget end. Useful for content and homework support at MYP level, and not the place to look for somebody who can interpret a criterion-referenced report.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask each teacher for the next two assessment dates

MYP task dates sit with subject teachers rather than in one published calendar, and they are what a session should be booked against. A short request to each teacher, or to the year coordinator, converts MYP tutoring from a weekly expense into an intervention placed where it can move a band.

  2. 02

Read the returned task, not the report

For each criterion assessed, find the mark and read the descriptor for the band above it. The descriptor names something specific: offer an evaluation, justify a generalisation, discuss a limitation. That is the gap, and acting on it before the next task in that criterion is what changes the accumulated total.

  3. 03

Act on the first marked task of the year

Criterion marks accumulate, so a low mark in week five influences far more of the year than the same information arriving in a February report. One low criterion mark in September is information; four of them in February is a grade, and the difference is a conversation held five months earlier.

  4. 04

Ask whether the school uses eAssessment

If it does, MYP 5 carries on-screen timed examinations and that practice has to be scheduled. If it does not, examination practice is spending on an unassessed skill and the focus should be the criterion profile and the Personal Project. The answer is one line and it reshapes the final year.

  5. 05

    Use the summer before DP1

Four to six sessions on marked algebraic drill, plus four or five on command terms and timed technique. Nothing competes, nothing is at stake, and both gaps are what DP1 assumes from the first term. Families who use that window describe the Diploma's first year in completely different terms.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Timed to the unit cycle, not the term

MYP runs on units ending in criterion-marked tasks, so a session in the fortnight before a task can move a band while the same hour mid-unit usually cannot. Four well-placed sessions often outperform twelve spread evenly, and that is a cheaper plan as well as a better one.

Accumulation explained

Criterion marks add up across the year, so a weakness addressed after the first marked task influences most of the year's marks while the same work after a mid-year report influences very few. Nobody in this market points that out, because responding to reports sells more hours.

The descriptor method handed over

For each criterion, read the band above the mark awarded. The descriptor names what was missing in plain language, and the descriptors repeat in every unit. Many families find they need no tutoring once they have done this, and we would rather say so than not.

A written boundary on the Personal Project

Questioning, criteria explanation, a comparable model on a different topic, and feedback on what the student has written. No product contribution, no drafting, no writing in the journal. The project is declared as the student's own work and assessed on documentation.

Honest about local MYP supply

IB enrolment was 7 per cent of Dubai's private school market in 2024-25, so most tutors nearby come from other curricula and criterion marking is unfamiliar to them. Four specific questions test that, and we expect you to use them on us as well.

The transition window named

The spring and summer at the end of MYP 5 is the cheapest intervention in the programme, aimed at algebraic fluency and timed technique. Nobody markets it, because nothing is failing and there is no deadline to point at, which is exactly why it appears here.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Silicon Oasis: your questions answered

When in the MYP year is a tutoring session actually worth buying?+

In the fortnight before a criterion-marked task, spent reading the task sheet and the relevant descriptor against whatever the student has drafted. That is the point in a unit cycle where an hour can move a band. Mid-unit sessions are content support, which helps only if content is the genuine gap. Immediately after a marked task is also valuable, because it diagnoses which criterion lost the band and sets up the next unit.

Why do MYP criterion marks make early intervention so important?+

Because they accumulate. Each subject is marked against four criteria on a 1 to 8 scale, and the school converts the accumulated totals to the reported 1 to 7 grade using published boundaries. A low mark in the first unit is not cancelled by a strong one later; it sits inside the total. So acting after the first marked task influences most of the year's marks, while the same work after a mid-year report influences very few.

How do I read a returned MYP task from my child's Silicon Oasis school?+

Ignore the overall comment and look at the criterion letters. For each criterion assessed, find the mark out of 8 and then read the descriptor for the band above it. The descriptor says in plain language what the student would have needed to do differently, usually something specific like offering an evaluation or justifying a generalisation. Because the same criteria recur in every unit, that lesson transfers directly to the next task.

Is weekly MYP tutoring the right shape?+

Often not. Four sessions placed at the right points across two unit cycles usually do more than twelve spread evenly, because eight of the twelve fall at moments when nothing is being assessed and the student has no vehicle for applying what is taught. The exception is a subject where content has genuinely been missed, for instance after a period of absence, where steady weekly contact is the correct response.

Do tutors come to homes in Cedre Villas for MYP sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For criterion work the online format suits the task: the assessment sheet, the criterion descriptor and the student's own draft sit side by side on a shared screen at the same magnification for both people. Point-in-cycle booking is also easier, since a session can be placed at a different hour from one fortnight to the next.

How should the Personal Project be timed across MYP 5?+

Backwards from the school's milestones, which vary between IB schools along this corridor, so ask for all of them in the opening weeks. The goal should be narrowed early to something achievable and documentable, the process journal routine established in the first weeks rather than reconstructed later, and a complete report draft should exist in time for feedback to be acted on rather than merely received.

Where exactly does legitimate Personal Project support stop?+

With questioning and feedback, yes; with producing it, never. A tutor may help narrow the goal, explain each criterion, ask the questions a good supervisor would ask, model a comparable project on an unrelated topic, and read what the student has written and say where it falls short. A tutor may not contribute to the product, draft the report or write in the process journal. The project is declared as the student's own work.

Does our school enter students for MYP eAssessment?+

Ask in September, because practice varies across Dubai and the answer reshapes the final year. Where eAssessment applies, MYP 5 carries on-screen timed examinations and moderated ePortfolios leading to the IB MYP Certificate for students who meet the requirements, so examination practice becomes relevant and has to be scheduled. Where it does not apply, MYP 5 stays criterion-referenced and examination practice is spending on an unassessed skill.

Which gaps should a Silicon Oasis family close before DP1 begins?+

Four to six sessions of marked algebraic drill, plus four or five on command terms and timed examination technique. MYP assesses mathematics against criteria including real-life application without drilling manipulation to automaticity, and both Diploma mathematics courses assume that fluency from the first term. Timed external papers with mark schemes are also new unless the school used eAssessment. Nothing competes in that window, which is why it is the cheapest in the programme.

Why does my child lose MYP science marks despite understanding the content?+

Most often on the criterion covering reflection on the impacts of science, which is assessed and which students frequently leave blank because nobody told them a paragraph on implications was required. The other common loss is on inquiring and designing, where the student does not know how to frame a testable question or justify a method. Both are specific, both are visible on the criterion letters, and both are usually one-session fixes.

Why does my child lose MYP maths bands with good arithmetic?+

Almost always on the criterion covering investigating patterns, which asks the student to generalise a rule and justify it. That is a different activity from calculating accurately, and a student never taught to write a justification loses a band there consistently while getting the numbers right. The repair is a four to six session block using the student's own marked tasks, and it should be bought early because the criterion recurs in every unit.

How do I test whether a tutor near Silicon Oasis really knows MYP?+

Four questions. Name the four criteria for this subject and say what each assesses. What is each criterion marked out of? How does the school convert those marks to the reported grade? Which criterion do students in this subject most often lose bands on? Somebody who has taught and marked MYP answers in sentences with specifics; somebody from another curriculum background will talk about the subject instead, which is the distinction to listen for.

Is MYP tutoring supply genuinely thin along this corridor?+

Yes, and it is a cohort-size fact rather than a comment on any community. IB enrolment was 7 per cent of Dubai's private school market in 2024-25, against 37 per cent UK curriculum and 26 per cent Indian, so most tutors available locally come from other curricula. Supply is deepest near the IB continuum schools at Nad Al Sheba and in Mirdif and thin elsewhere, which is why removing the driving radius widens the choice so much.

Does the mandatory Arabic timetable affect MYP study time in Dubai?+

It occupies school timetable space. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and a prohibition on combining the groups, and instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Support in those subjects works from the school's approved material, because using different or additional content requires prior Ministry permission.

What should one well-timed MYP session achieve?+

Quite a lot, if it sits in the fortnight before a task. The student should leave able to say what the criterion descriptor for the band above actually requires, and the draft they bring should change in a specific way, usually by acquiring an evaluation, a justification or a discussion of limitations that was missing. That is checkable on the next returned task, which is a far better measure than a grade promise nobody can honestly make.

Buy the fortnight before the task

MYP rewards timing more than volume. A session placed in the fortnight before a criterion-marked task, with the descriptor open beside the student's own draft, does what a term of general subject teaching does not. So ask each teacher for the next two assessment dates, look at the criterion letters on the last returned task rather than at the report, and send us both along with the four criterion marks. The free trial lesson costs nothing, and the note that follows will name the weak criterion and the point in the cycle to act.
