IB Physics Tutor in Dubai Silicon Oasis

An IB physics tutor in Dubai Silicon Oasis is usually hired in one of two terms, and the two are not interchangeable. Physics is taught in a sequence that puts the hardest themes last, the scientific investigation deadline lands in the busiest fortnight, and uncertainty work is needed twice over. This page maps the whole two-year sequence so you can see which term you are in, and delivers lessons as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • The physics sequence mapped across DP1 and DP2
  • Uncertainty treated as a component, because it is assessed twice
  • Investigation support is feedback on your child's own work only

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Silicon Oasis

Where in the physics sequence your child actually is

Diploma physics is taught in an order, and the order has consequences that almost no tutoring page mentions. The current syllabus covers five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Most schemes of work begin with motion and forces, because they anchor everything else, and finish with nuclear and quantum physics. That means the last theme arrives in DP2, under maximum time pressure, alongside mocks and the investigation deadline.

The two moments families in Silicon Oasis most often call are therefore predictable. The first is early in DP1, when a capable student meets extended written reasoning for the first time and the marks drop. The second is the second term of DP2, when nuclear and quantum physics, the scientific investigation, mocks and in some cases university applications all occupy the same six weeks. Those two calls need completely different work.

Underneath both sits uncertainty. Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and what an uncertainty implies about a conclusion are needed twice: in the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and inside the scientific investigation, which carries 20 per cent of the grade. It is the most under-prepared skill in Diploma physics and one of the few structural-looking gaps that is genuinely closable late, because the procedures are finite.

The investigation deadline is the date everything else bends around, and it is set by the school rather than by the board. Since every Diploma science sets one and the Extended Essay milestones sit nearby, those dates cluster. A parent who asks the coordinator for all of them in September of DP1 can plan around the cluster; one who meets them individually cannot. That request costs nothing and changes more than a term of lessons would.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Across Silicon Oasis, Cedre Villas, Academic City, The Villa and Nad Al Sheba, physics lessons are live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time. For this subject the format is an advantage: teaching physics is mostly working through problems line by line, and a shared screen puts the same working in front of both people with the tutor able to annotate the exact line where a unit was dropped.

What follows is the sequence in detail. Which themes land when, what each one demands, how the investigation timeline runs backwards from the school's date, what the final ten weeks can and cannot reach, and why uncertainty belongs at the front of almost every physics plan regardless of which term you are in.

One framing worth carrying into the detail. Physics is a subject where the diagnosis matters more than the quantity of help, because the two common presentations look identical on a report and need opposite plans. The student who was fine until the hardest themes arrived needs content and a calmer calendar. The student who has been losing the same marks since the first term of DP1 needs the slow work. Spending the same money on the wrong one of those is the commonest way a physics budget achieves nothing.

At a glance

  • Nuclear and quantum physics is usually taught last, arriving under maximum pressure
  • Uncertainty work is assessed twice: in Paper 1 data analysis and in the investigation
  • The investigation deadline is set by the school and clusters with other science deadlines
  • Ask the coordinator for every science and Extended Essay date in September of DP1
  • Physics is the Diploma subject where the earlier afternoon window matters most
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics arrives in the Diploma from two directions and the gap differs by route. These are the stages and what each leaves a student ready or unready for.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Integrated or discrete sciences assessed against four criteria, A to D, each marked 1 to 8. The inquiring and designing criterion is the closest analogue to what Diploma physics will demand of an investigation, and students who treated it as a write-up rather than as a designed piece of work carry that habit forward.

A Silicon Oasis student arriving from MYP typically has sound investigation instincts and uneven mathematics. The gap is rarely conceptual physics; it is rearranging formulae, indices and standard form, and unit manipulation, all of which are mathematics doing physics work and all of which are cheapest to fix before DP1 starts.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE physics or combined science

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 for separate physics, or a combined entry covering all three sciences more narrowly. Students arriving from a combined entry meet substantially more Diploma content, particularly in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics, which compounds the late-sequence problem.

This is the commoner route from schools along this corridor. The honest warning is that a strong IGCSE physics grade predicts comfort with Diploma calculation and says very little about extended written reasoning, which is the Higher Level discriminator and which is new rather than harder.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme physics

Five themes assessed by Paper 1, which contains a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section, and Paper 2 of structured and extended-response questions, plus a scientific investigation worth 20 per cent of the grade. Higher Level extends content within the same themes and raises the extended-response demand.

Deira International School, GEMS Modern Academy at Nad Al Sheba and the other Diploma centres reachable from this corridor each set their own scheme-of-work order and their own investigation deadline. Ask your school for both, because a generic sequence is a useful starting point and the school's actual order is what the plan must follow.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This grid is the physics syllabus sorted by when it typically arrives and what it demands at that point. Use it to work out whether your child's current difficulty is a sequence problem or a capability one.

Space, time and motion

HL and SL

Usually taught first. Kinematics, forces, work and energy, momentum, circular motion and gravitation. The theme where marks are most often lost to a carelessly drawn free-body diagram, because a missing force makes every subsequent line wrong however good the algebra is.

The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Thermal physics, gas laws, current and circuits, typically taught in DP1. Circuit questions reward a student who redraws the circuit before calculating and punish one who substitutes straight from the printed diagram, which is a habit rather than a knowledge gap.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Simple harmonic motion, wave models, superposition, standing waves and the Doppler effect, usually spanning the DP1 to DP2 boundary. This is where physical reasoning in words carries more marks than algebra, so a calculation-strong student can look suddenly worse here.

Fields

HL and SL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential, and electromagnetic induction at Higher Level, generally taught in DP2. Sign conventions matter most in this theme, and students lose marks they have otherwise earned by treating a minus sign as a typographical detail.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Atomic structure, radioactive decay, fission, fusion and quantum phenomena, almost always taught last. Arrives alongside mocks and the investigation deadline, which makes it the single commonest subject of a late physics tutoring request along this corridor.

Uncertainty and data analysis

HL and SL

Graph drawing, gradient and intercept interpretation, absolute and percentage uncertainty and propagation. Assessed in the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and inside the investigation, so a single block of work serves two components at once.

Extended-response technique

HL especially

Multi-mark written answers requiring a chain of physical reasoning in which each step names a mechanism. Students write three restatements of the first sentence instead, which earns one mark. A habit built over a term, so it belongs in DP1.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL, 20 per cent

An independent investigation on a question the student chooses, marked against published criteria. Thin evaluation and a research question too broad for the available apparatus are the two expensive failures, and both are settled at the planning stage.

Mathematics for physics

HL and SL

Rearranging formulae, indices and standard form, trigonometry, logarithms and gradients. A student without fluency here appears weak across all five themes, because the same deficiency resurfaces in each one. Often the cheapest intervention in the subject.

Practical reasoning in writing

HL and SL

Apparatus choice, systematic versus random error, precision of recording, and specific rather than generic improvements. Assessed in written form on the papers as well as inside the investigation, which means it is teachable without a laboratory bench.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, each belonging to a different point in the physics sequence. All run as live one-to-one video lessons on Gulf Standard Time, with working and mark schemes shared on screen.

Uncertainty and data-analysis block

Four to six sessions on absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, graph drawing and gradient reasoning. The highest-return physics purchase at almost any point in the two years, because the same work serves the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and the scientific investigation simultaneously.

  • Finite procedures rather than a habit, so closable in weeks
  • Serves two assessed components from one block
  • Graphs drawn and annotated on a shared screen
  • Best bought before the investigation data is collected

DP1 reasoning block

Weekly through DP1, aimed at extended-response technique and at the mathematics underneath the physics. Both are habits rather than facts, which means they need months and belong here. This is the block families along this corridor skip because nothing has yet failed.

  • Causal chains written and marked against a scheme
  • Formula rearrangement and units drilled every session
  • Free-body diagram discipline established early
  • Reviewed at the DP1 end-of-year assessment

Late-sequence catch-up

A focused run on fields and on nuclear and quantum physics in DP2, where the scheme of work has placed the hardest content in the most crowded term. Content-led rather than habit-led, which is why it genuinely works late, provided the mathematics underneath is already sound.

  • Aimed at the themes taught last, not at general revision
  • Sign conventions in fields treated as a specific drill
  • Scheduled around the investigation deadline and mocks
  • Fixed end date, so the budget has a visible ceiling

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Silicon Oasis

01

The two-year physics sequence, and why the hardest part comes last

Most schemes of work begin Diploma physics with space, time and motion, because kinematics, forces and energy anchor everything that follows and because students arrive with some of it from IGCSE or MYP. The particulate nature of matter, with thermal physics and circuits, usually follows in DP1. Wave behaviour commonly spans the DP1 to DP2 boundary. Fields and then nuclear and quantum physics sit in DP2, in that order.

That ordering is pedagogically sensible and calendrically brutal. It places the two themes with the least prior scaffolding into the term that also contains the scientific investigation deadline, the mock window and, for students applying overseas, university deadlines. A student who has coped adequately through DP1 can appear to collapse in the second term of DP2 without anything having changed about their ability.

Recognising that is the single most useful diagnostic a parent can apply. If a student was fine until fields arrived, the problem is probably sequence and workload rather than capability, and the right response is a focused content block on the late themes. If a student has been losing the same kinds of marks since the first term of DP1, the problem is capability, and a content block in DP2 will not touch it.

The table below gives the typical order with what each theme demands. Treat it as a template to check against your own school's scheme of work rather than as the authority, because schools along this corridor order the themes differently and some teach two in parallel. Ask the physics teacher for the order and the dates; it is one message and it makes every subsequent decision easier.

Uncertainty: the block that serves two components

  • Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, and what it implies about a conclusion
  • Assessed in Paper 1 data analysis and inside the 20 per cent investigation
  • Finite and procedural, so it closes in four to six sessions even late
  • Buy it before the investigation data is collected, not afterwards

Absolute uncertainty, percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, and what an uncertainty implies about whether a conclusion is supported. None of it is conceptually hard. Almost none of it is practised deliberately, because it does not feel like physics and because it sits across two components rather than inside a named theme, so neither the scheme of work nor a revision timetable naturally allocates time to it.

The consequence is twofold. In the data-analysis section of Paper 1 students lose marks on questions that are procedural once learned. And in the scientific investigation, which carries 20 per cent of the grade, uncertainty treatment is one of the thinnest sections in most reports, because it was not planned before the data was collected and therefore could not be done properly afterwards.

That combination makes a four to six session uncertainty block the highest-return physics purchase at almost any point in the two years. It is finite, so it closes. It is procedural, so it closes late if necessary. And it serves two assessed components at once, which no other block in the subject does. For most Diploma physics students it moves more marks than four sessions on any single theme would.

The timing preference is clear though: before the investigation data is collected rather than after. A student who understands propagation while designing the method will record the right things with the right precision and will have something real to write in the evaluation. A student who meets it after the data exists can learn the Paper 1 procedures but cannot retrofit the investigation, and that is 20 per cent of the grade sitting on a planning decision.

03

The investigation timeline, counted back from the school's date

The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the physics grade, and its deadline belongs to the school rather than to the board. Every Diploma science sets one and the Extended Essay milestones sit nearby, so the dates cluster and three deadlines in a fortnight is routine. Asking the coordinator for all of them in September of DP1 turns a predictable congestion into a plan, and it costs nothing.

Working backwards gives the schedule. A complete draft two to three weeks before submission, so that feedback can be acted on rather than merely received. Data collection finished before that, with enough margin to repeat a run that fails. Method, apparatus and the uncertainty plan settled before any data is collected. And the research question narrowed earliest of all, because a question too broad for school apparatus produces data that cannot support a conclusion.

For physics specifically, two planning errors recur along this corridor. Choosing a relationship whose variation cannot be measured reliably with available equipment, and leaving uncertainty until the numbers are recorded. Both are conversations rather than lessons, both belong at the front of the process, and both are far cheaper to prevent than to patch. Two or three well-timed hours here outperform a term of content teaching.

The boundary is absolute. A tutor may discuss the research question, explain each criterion, model a comparable investigation on a different topic, read a draft your child has written and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not write, draft, complete, rewrite or supply any part of it. The report is declared as the student's own work and moderated by the IB, so the consequence of anything else falls on your child.

04

What the final ten weeks can reach in physics

Ten weeks before the May examinations is when most Diploma physics tutoring in Dubai is bought, and the ceiling is real but not as low as in some subjects. Physics is unusual in that one of its characteristic weaknesses, uncertainty treatment, is procedural and therefore closable late. So is sign-convention discipline in fields. So is the content of nuclear and quantum physics, if the mathematics underneath is sound, because that theme is largely definitional.

What ten weeks cannot deliver is extended-response reasoning from scratch. A multi-mark question asking why something happens wants a causal chain in which each step follows from the last and names a mechanism, and students who have spent two years writing descriptions instead cannot acquire that chain in ten weeks. They can acquire a partial version: a structure to follow, a checklist of what a mechanism sentence contains, which captures some of the marks.

Nor can ten weeks install the mathematics. A student who cannot rearrange a formula confidently in March will hesitate in May, and the hesitation costs time across both papers. The honest response is to target the questions that minimise that exposure and to drill the specific rearrangements the common question types require, rather than attempting general mathematical fluency.

So a final-block physics plan should be explicit. Uncertainty and data analysis first, because it is finite and worth marks in two places. Then the late themes, content-led. Then extended-response structure as a checklist rather than as a habit. And a stated exclusion: general mathematical fluency is not in scope, and the student should be told so, because a plan carrying an unachievable goal produces the sense of failure rather than progress.

05

Practical work, the school's laboratory and what a tutor adds

  • Most assessed practical reasoning is written, so it is teachable remotely
  • The school's laboratory is the right place for apparatus; a tutor should not try to replace it
  • Graphs and uncertainty bars are easier to teach on a shared screen than across a table
  • No tutoring substitutes for a student who is missing the practical sessions themselves

Parents reasonably ask how practical physics can be supported when the tutor is not in the room, and the answer is that most assessed practical reasoning is expressed in writing rather than performed. Choosing an appropriate instrument, distinguishing systematic from random error, explaining why a measurement was repeated, reading a scale to the correct precision, and suggesting a specific rather than generic improvement are all taught on paper and marked on paper.

The laboratory belongs to the school and should. Your child has access to apparatus, a teacher who knows it, and technicians who maintain it. A tutor offering to replicate that would be offering something worse than what the student already has. What a tutor adds is the thinking on either side of the bench: anticipating error sources before the experiment runs, and interpreting the numbers honestly once it has.

Data analysis is where the online format is genuinely superior rather than merely adequate. A student's graph can be displayed and annotated, the line of best fit discussed, the gradient computed and its units reasoned about, and uncertainty bars drawn in while both people watch the same screen at the same magnification. Across a table, the tutor is reading a graph upside down and pointing at it from the wrong side.

One honest limitation deserves stating. A student who has not actually used the apparatus writes about it less convincingly than one who has, and no amount of tutoring substitutes for having done the practical sessions. If your child is missing laboratory work, that is the problem to solve first and it is a conversation with the school rather than a purchase from anybody.

06

Paper components, and what to practise for each

Diploma physics is assessed by two written papers plus the scientific investigation. Paper 1 contains a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section. Paper 2 contains structured and extended-response questions. For exact weightings and durations at your child's level, use the school's copy of the subject guide, which is the authority; we do not reproduce board documents on this site.

Multiple choice loses marks to careless reading rather than to ignorance, and the useful drill is a timed set followed by analysis of every wrong answer, asking what the distractor was designed to catch. Most students find the same two or three traps recurring, which is a fixable pattern rather than a knowledge gap and which responds within two or three sessions.

The data-analysis section is the under-prepared one, and it is the same work as the uncertainty block described above, which is why that block does double duty. Paper 2's structured questions reward a standard layout: formula written out, substitution shown, answer with units. A calculation compressed into two lines cannot be awarded method marks because the method is not visible.

Paper 2's extended-response questions are the Higher Level discriminator and the slowest to move. The requirement is a causal chain in which each step names a mechanism. Teaching it requires marked practice with the mark scheme visible, repeatedly, until the student can see which of their own sentences earned nothing. That is a DP1 job done properly and a partial job done in DP2.

07

Higher Level or Standard Level, and when the decision bites

Higher Level physics covers additional content within the same five themes and demands considerably more extended written reasoning. It is the second of those that catches students, because content can be learned in weeks and a reasoning habit takes months. A student comfortable with Standard Level calculation and uncomfortable writing a four-sentence causal explanation will find Higher Level harder than the syllabus difference alone suggests.

The decision bites at two points in the calendar. The first is at the start of DP1, when the level is chosen, and that is when the reasoning habit should start being built if Higher Level is the plan. The second is in the second term of DP2, when fields and nuclear physics arrive at Higher Level depth in the most crowded term of the course, and the gap between the two levels becomes most visible.

On university requirements, engineering, physics and some computer science programmes commonly specify Higher Level physics or a Higher Level science, while medicine and life sciences usually specify chemistry and biology instead. Requirements are set course by course and change between admissions cycles, so the reliable method is to read the admissions page for the specific course in the specific year and to involve the school's university counsellor early.

The tutoring consequence is about timing rather than level. If a target course requires Higher Level physics, the money belongs in DP1 building the reasoning habit while there is time for it to become automatic. If no target course requires it, Higher Level physics chosen for its appearance on a transcript will consume tutoring hours across two years and deliver nothing that was needed. Ask before the choice is locked.

Starting from Dubai Silicon Oasis, and the limits we state

  • Send the level, the themes taught so far, the investigation deadline and the real hour
  • Free trial lesson, then a written note sorted by component
  • No home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no board or regulator approval claimed
  • No IB session or results dates published here; the coordinator holds them

Send four things: the level, which themes have been taught so far, the school's internal deadline for the scientific investigation, and the hour your child is realistically at a desk. The theme list is the item nobody sends and the one that most improves the plan, because it distinguishes a sequence problem from a capability one. We then match a tutor to the level and run a free trial lesson as live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time, at no cost.

Afterwards you receive a written note setting out where marks are being lost, sorted by component rather than by theme, with a recommended shape. For most physics students the first block is uncertainty and data analysis, because it is finite and serves two components. For a Higher Level student in DP1, a weekly arrangement on reasoning and mathematics is frequently right, and we will say which situation you are in.

The limits, stated plainly. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. There is no UAE office, centre or branch and we claim none. We hold no IB, regulator or board approval. We publish no IB examination or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date a family plans around is worse than silence; your child's coordinator holds the real calendar.

And the investigation boundary, once more. A tutor may discuss the question, explain the criteria, model a comparable investigation on a different topic, read your child's own draft and say where it falls short, and teach citation. A tutor may not write, draft, complete or supply any part of it. Ask every provider you consider to put that in writing before money moves, and keep the reply.

Where we tutor

Scheduling physics by community

Physics depends on sustained reasoning more than most subjects, so the hour available matters. These notes cover what each community realistically offers.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Self-contained, with a large British-curriculum secondary school and several Indian-curriculum schools inside the community. Students attending locally reach the mid-afternoon window easily, which is the window where a student can still hold a four-step derivation in mind.

Cedre Villas and Silicon Gardens

Villa and townhouse stock within Silicon Oasis with short internal journeys. Scheduling stability matters for physics across two years, because the subject builds from motion and forces through to fields in a strict sequence.

Dubai International Academic City

University district immediately south. Undergraduate physicists and engineers are plentiful at the AED 33 to 65 budget band, which is well matched to drilling the mathematics for physics and badly matched to investigation criteria.

The Villa and Dubailand

Villa communities west of the corridor and more car-dependent, with longer internal journeys. Later arrival home pushes the slot into the evening, which for physics is the weaker window, so a weekend block is often the better purchase.

Nad Al Sheba

Two long-established schools on this stretch, including an IB continuum school, so many Diploma physics students here attend locally and are home early. Good conditions for DP1 work on extended-response technique.

Mirdif

Twenty-five to forty minutes north-east depending on the hour, with its own IB continuum school. Students attending in Mirdif are home earlier than those crossing the corridor, which decides which half of the week can carry a physics session.

Al Warqa and Al Rashidiya

Established housing between Silicon Oasis and Festival City with heavy dismissal traffic. Evening slots are the dependable ones, which suits consolidation and past-paper review better than new derivations.

International City

Dense and price-sensitive north of the corridor, well supplied at the budget end. Useful for the mathematics-for-physics drilling that underlies the whole subject, and not for the components carrying investigation marks.

School ecosystem

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the list of themes taught so far

It takes a line and it distinguishes the two possible diagnoses. A student who was fine until fields arrived has a sequence and workload problem; one losing the same marks since the first term of DP1 has a capability problem. Those need completely different plans and the same amount of money.

  2. 02

Ask the coordinator for every science deadline

The physics investigation deadline, the other sciences, and the Extended Essay milestones. They cluster, and knowing the cluster in September of DP1 turns a February emergency into a plan. One request, one reply, and it costs nothing at all.

  3. 03

    Buy the uncertainty block first

Four to six sessions on absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation and graph reasoning. It is finite, so it closes, and it serves both the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and the scientific investigation, which no other block in the subject does.

  4. 04

Place the session in the earlier window

Physics depends on sustained algebraic reasoning, which is the first thing a tired student loses. Find the afternoon that carries no physics double period and no practical, and book there. A weekend morning block is usually better value than a second weekday evening.

  5. 05

Review by component after the mock

Sort the lost marks into multiple choice, data analysis, structured questions and extended response. Most students show one dominant weakness, and the next block should aim at it rather than at general revision across all five themes.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The sequence is mapped, not assumed

Nuclear and quantum physics is usually taught last, arriving in the term that also holds the investigation deadline and mocks. A student who collapses then has a sequence problem rather than a capability one, and recognising the difference changes what should be bought.

Uncertainty treated as a component

It is assessed in Paper 1 data analysis and inside the 20 per cent investigation, it is finite and procedural, and almost nobody practises it deliberately. One block serving two components is the best value available in Diploma physics at any point in the two years.

An honest ceiling on ten weeks

Uncertainty, sign conventions and late-theme content are reachable. Extended-response reasoning is only partly reachable and mathematical fluency is not. Stating the exclusion is what makes the block succeed rather than producing a sense of failure.

Investigation support with a written boundary

Question narrowing, criteria explanation, a comparable model on a different topic, and feedback on your child's own draft. No drafting, no completing, no supplied material. The report is moderated by the IB and declared as the student's own work.

Honest about what online cannot do

The school's laboratory is where the apparatus belongs and a tutor should not pretend otherwise. What a tutor adds is the thinking either side of the bench, and graph and uncertainty work is genuinely easier on a shared screen than across a table.

No borrowed authority, no invented dates

We explain what KHDA, ADEK, SPEA and the Ministry of Education govern and claim approval from none of them. We publish no IB session or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and a wrong date is the worst error available.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Silicon Oasis: your questions answered

Why did my child's physics grade fall in the second term of DP2?+

Often because of where the scheme of work placed the content rather than because anything changed about their ability. Fields and then nuclear and quantum physics are usually taught last, so they arrive in the term that also holds the scientific investigation deadline, the mock window and, for overseas applicants, university deadlines. A student who coped through DP1 and struggles then usually has a sequence and workload problem, which responds to a focused content block.

Which physics topic gives the best return on tutoring hours?+

Uncertainty and data analysis, at almost any point in the two years. Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, graph drawing and gradient reasoning are finite procedures, so four to six sessions closes them, and they are assessed twice: in the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and inside the scientific investigation, which carries 20 per cent of the grade. No other block in Diploma physics serves two components from one purchase.

When should a Silicon Oasis family buy physics tuition?+

DP1 if the problem is extended written reasoning or the mathematics underneath the subject, because both are habits that need months. DP2 if the problem is the late themes, since fields and nuclear physics are content-led and genuinely respond to a focused block. The uncertainty block is worth buying at either point, and ideally before the investigation data is collected rather than afterwards, because it cannot be retrofitted.

How much of the physics grade is the scientific investigation, and when is it due?+

Twenty per cent, and the deadline is set by the school rather than by the board. Every Diploma science sets one and the Extended Essay milestones sit nearby, so the dates cluster and three in a fortnight is routine. Ask the coordinator for all of them in September of DP1. Counting backwards, a complete draft should exist two to three weeks before submission so feedback can actually be acted on.

Can a tutor support the physics investigation without being in the laboratory?+

Yes, for the parts that carry most of the marks. Narrowing the research question until school apparatus can answer it, planning for systematic and random error, settling the uncertainty treatment before data is collected, and reading a draft and saying where it falls short against the criteria are all off-bench work. The laboratory belongs to the school, where the apparatus and technicians are, and a tutor should not try to replace it.

Do tutors travel to Cedre Villas or Academic City for physics lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For physics the online format is an advantage rather than a compromise, because teaching the subject is mostly working through problems line by line. A shared screen puts the same working in front of both people, lets the tutor annotate the exact line where a unit was dropped, and allows a graph to be marked up while both watch.

What can ten weeks of physics tutoring realistically achieve?+

More than in some subjects. Uncertainty and propagation are finite and close readily. Sign-convention discipline in fields responds to drilling. The nuclear and quantum content is largely definitional and can be learned, given sound mathematics. What ten weeks cannot do is build extended-response reasoning from scratch or install mathematical fluency, though a structure and a mechanism checklist will capture some of the extended-response marks.

Why does my child calculate physics correctly and still lose marks?+

Usually units and compressed working. An answer written without its unit, or left in the wrong power of ten, loses the mark however sound the arithmetic. And a multi-step calculation written in two lines cannot be awarded method marks because the method is not visible to the examiner. Teaching a standard layout of formula, substitution, then answer with units takes about one session and pays back across both papers for the rest of the course.

Which physics themes do students along this corridor ask for most?+

Fields first, because sign conventions matter most there and students lose marks they have otherwise earned by treating a minus sign as decoration. Then nuclear and quantum physics, because it is taught last and therefore met under maximum pressure. Wave behaviour is a close third, since it rewards physical reasoning in words rather than calculation, which catches students who are strong at the algebra and weak at the explanation.

Does weak mathematics explain a weak physics grade?+

Frequently, and it is the commonest misdiagnosis in the subject. Rearranging formulae, handling indices and standard form, trigonometry and gradient work are mathematics doing physics work, so a student without fluency appears weak across all five themes because the same deficiency resurfaces in each. Fixing the mathematics first can lift physics without anybody being paid to teach physics, which is why a diagnosis should examine both.

What exactly makes HL physics harder than SL for a DP2 student?+

The additional content is manageable; the extended-response demand is what catches students. A multi-mark written answer wants a causal chain in which each step follows from the last and names a mechanism, and students write three restatements of the first sentence instead, which earns one mark. Content can be learned in weeks and the reasoning habit takes months, which is why Higher Level support belongs in DP1 rather than in the final term.

How many physics sessions a week suit a Dubai Silicon Oasis Diploma student?+

One, placed on the afternoon that carries no physics double period and no practical session. A second weekday evening is usually worse value than a weekend morning block, because physics depends on sustained reasoning and a 7.30pm session delivers noticeably less than a 10am one for the same student. Where a Higher Level student is genuinely behind, a longer weekend block plus the weekday hour works better than three tired evenings.

Do universities require Higher Level physics for engineering from Dubai?+

Many do and some accept alternatives, and requirements are set course by course and change between admissions cycles, so no tutoring page should give you a rule. Engineering, physics and some computer science programmes commonly specify Higher Level physics or a Higher Level science. Open the admissions page for the specific course and year and involve the school's university counsellor early. Ministry of Education equivalency is a separate matter from a university's own requirements.

Should we practise multiple choice, or is that a waste of a session?+

It is worth two or three sessions, not more. Multiple choice loses marks to careless reading under time pressure rather than to ignorance, and the useful drill is a timed set followed by analysis of every wrong answer, asking what the distractor was designed to catch. Most students find the same two or three traps recurring, which is a fixable pattern. Beyond that the time is better spent on data analysis or extended response.

What should a Silicon Oasis family see after four physics sessions?+

Three things and no grade. Your child should know which component is costing marks, stated as multiple choice, data analysis, structured questions or extended response. You should hold a written note sorted that way. And one habit should visibly change, most often writing the unit on every answer or laying out working so that method marks can be awarded. Grade movement takes longer and nobody can honestly promise it.

Find your place in the sequence first

Physics rewards a family that knows where the course has got to. A student struggling since the first term of DP1 needs the reasoning and mathematics work that only a long block delivers. A student who was fine until fields arrived needs a focused content run and a calmer calendar. The two look identical on a report and need different money. So send the level, the themes taught so far and the school's investigation deadline. The free trial lesson costs nothing, and the written note that follows will say which of the two you are dealing with.
