IB Home Tutor in Dubai International Academic City

Looking for an IB home tutor in Dubai International Academic City usually means one thing: your child needs a Diploma specialist and you want the lesson to happen without a 40-minute round trip. Academic City sits behind the university campuses off Al Ain Road, and the IB schools its families use are scattered from Nad Al Sheba to Al Warqa. IB Gram runs one-to-one lessons live online, on Gulf Standard Time, so the tutor is chosen for the subject rather than the postcode.

  • One-to-one lessons over live video, never a group class
  • Diploma, MYP and PYP tutors matched by subject and level
  • Free trial lesson before any commitment is made
  • Gulf Standard Time scheduling, including weekend mornings

IB & IGCSE in Dubai International Academic City

Academic City, the neighbourhoods either side of it, and the same answer in all of them

Dubai International Academic City is a planned education free zone off Al Ain Road, built around university branch campuses rather than around schools. Families living in and beside it — in Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City's own residential blocks, Al Warqa, Nad Al Hamar and International City — share a problem that families in Jumeirah do not have. The IB schools they use are not next door. Dubai English Speaking College sits inside Academic City itself but runs the British route to IGCSE and A Level. The nearest IB Diploma provision is a drive away: GEMS Wellington Academy in Silicon Oasis, Uptown International School in Mirdif, GEMS Modern Academy and North London Collegiate School in Nad Al Sheba, Universal American School in Al Warqa.

That geography shapes what a search for an IB home tutor in this area actually returns. A tutor who lives in Academic City and happens to teach Diploma Chemistry is a coincidence, not a market. The pool of adults within a 20-minute drive who can teach Chemistry HL to a May candidate, and who hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is small enough to count. Parents discover this the slow way, after three WhatsApp enquiries and one tutor who turns out to teach GCSE Combined Science.

So this page is written as a comparison. Academic City against Silicon Oasis. Silicon Oasis against Mirdif. Mirdif against International City. Four neighbourhoods, four school catchments, four different drive times — and one answer, because the constraint is not distance. The constraint is how many Diploma subject specialists exist in Dubai at all, and a car does not change that number. Online delivery does, by making every specialist in the network reachable from every one of those four neighbourhoods on the same terms.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run in India only. We say that plainly here because the phrase you searched is the phrase parents use, and pretending otherwise would waste your evening. What we do instead is one-to-one tuition over live video, at a time that fits after the school run, with the tutor picked for the subject and level rather than for living near Dragon Mart.

Below you will find what in-home tutoring genuinely costs in this market, attributed to the providers publishing those rates; what the drive premium buys and what it does not; the Diploma year counted backwards from the May session; what KHDA inspects and what it does not; where the line sits between coaching an Internal Assessment and writing one; and what Ministry of Education equivalency asks of an IB graduate heading to a UAE university. Nothing here is a sales pitch dressed as information.

At a glance

  • Academic City houses university campuses and Dubai English Speaking College; its IB Diploma families drive out to Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Nad Al Sheba or Al Warqa
  • Market in-home rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180-500 per hour including travel, per Bestimate's 2026 rate table and published home-tutor rates
  • Qualified online subject tutors sit lower, roughly AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years; there is no fee to pass on
  • UAE candidates sit Cambridge exams in the June and November series — the February/March series is offered to India only
  • Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one; no tutor travels to an Academic City address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The IB runs as a continuum, and Academic City families often start in one programme and finish in another because their school changes or their commute does. These are the three stages tutoring is actually requested for, with what each means for a family living behind the university campuses.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP has no external exams. Learning is organised into transdisciplinary units of inquiry, and reporting is against learner-profile attributes and approaches to learning rather than subject percentages. Tutoring at this stage is mostly about the two things the PYP does not drill: number fluency and written fluency in English. A child who cannot recall multiplication facts under time pressure will meet that gap again in MYP mathematics, and the gap is cheaper to close at nine than at fourteen.

Universal American School in Al Warqa and Uptown International School in Mirdif both run the PYP within reach of Academic City, and both report in the IB's own language. Parents moving in from a CBSE or British primary are often startled by a report with no marks on it. A tutor's first job for an Academic City family is usually translation: what the report says, what it does not say, and which specific skill to work on this term.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP subjects are graded 1-8 against four criteria, each with published strands and a maximum of eight marks. In sciences the criteria are Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. Marks are lost on criteria B and C far more often than on A, because students who know the content still design weak investigations and process data without evaluating it. That is diagnosable work, and it is what MYP tutoring should be about.

The MYP-to-Diploma step is the one that bites in this part of Dubai. A student finishing MYP 5 at Uptown International School or Universal American School moves into a Diploma year where Mathematics AA HL assumes algebraic fluency the MYP never tested under exam conditions. Families who book tutoring in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1 spend far less than those who book it in the February of DP1.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject carries an Internal Assessment marked by the school and moderated by the IB. The Diploma is scored out of 45, with up to three points from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix. HL papers are longer, carry more content and include components SL candidates do not sit at all.

Diploma candidates near Academic City sit the May session, which is the session UAE schools use. The practical consequence for a family here is that the crunch is not May. It is the January and February window when four Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay final draft and the TOK essay all land within a few weeks of each other, in the same term as mock exams. That is when tutoring demand in Dubai peaks and availability is tightest.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP pairs two or more Diploma courses with a career-related study and a core of personal and professional skills, service learning, a reflective project and language development. It is offered by a small number of UAE schools and is sometimes the right route for a student who wants Diploma-level depth in two subjects without carrying six. Tutoring requests for CP students almost always concern the Diploma courses inside it.

CP provision near Academic City is thin, and most families asking about it are comparing it against the British route available at Dubai English Speaking College on their doorstep. If your child is weighing CP against A Levels, the question to put to the school is which specific university courses in the UAE and abroad accept the CP certificate for the subject they want, and get the answer in writing before Year 12 begins.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects Academic City and Silicon Oasis families request most. The description for each names what the assessment actually tests and where marks go missing, because that is what a tutor has to fix rather than the syllabus title.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic manipulation, calculus and proof. HL adds proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors and far heavier integration. Marks are lost on method presentation: a correct answer with no working scores a fraction of the marks available, and students trained on calculator-first methods lose the analytic ones.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-based problem solving. The common failure is interpretation, not computation — a student finds the regression line and then cannot say what the gradient means in context. HL adds matrices, graph theory and more demanding statistical inference.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 is multiple choice and short response, Paper 2 extended response, Paper 3 experimental and option material. Students lose marks explaining phenomena in everyday language rather than with the defined quantity, and on uncertainty treatment in the Internal Assessment, which is where most IA marks are quietly forfeited.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms, energetics, equilibrium and acids and bases carry the heaviest mark loads. The recurring problem is mechanism drawing: curly arrows from the wrong origin, missing lone pairs, no charges shown. HL adds further organic synthesis routes and more quantitative equilibrium work.

Biology

HL and SL

Command terms decide the grade. 'Outline' and 'explain' earn different mark allocations and students answer both as 'describe'. Data-based questions in Paper 2 reward reading the axes and the error bars before writing anything, a habit that is teachable in a handful of sessions.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams must be labelled, titled and referred to in the prose to score. HL adds calculation-heavy Paper 3. The Internal Assessment is three commentaries on recent news articles, each 800 words, and most mark loss is in the evaluation paragraph rather than the theory.

Business Management

HL and SL

The toolkit — Ansoff, SWOT, decision trees, break-even — is applied, not described. Case-study papers reward candidates who use the stimulus material's own numbers. HL candidates sit an additional paper based on pre-released stimulus material issued ahead of the session.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Guided textual analysis on unseen non-literary extracts, a comparative essay, the Individual Oral on a global issue, and for HL the HL Essay of 1,200-1,500 words. Marks are lost on the global issue being too broad — 'inequality' is not a global issue, a specific manifestation of it is.

Mathematics for the MYP transition

MYP 4-5 into DP1

A short, targeted programme covering the algebra, indices, surds and function notation that Diploma Mathematics assumes on day one. Most students arriving from MYP 5 can do these operations slowly; the Diploma expects them automatic, and the gap only shows up under timed conditions in DP1.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition in DP1 and the 1,600-word essay in DP2, scored together with the Extended Essay for up to three Diploma points. The exhibition fails when the three objects are illustrations of the prompt rather than evidence for a claim about knowledge. Tutoring is Socratic questioning on the student's own objects and drafts.

Extended Essay

Core, 4,000 words

A supervised independent research essay in one subject, assessed on focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation and engagement. Most failures are structural and early: a research question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words, or no method at all. A tutor interrogates the question, never writes the essay.

Chemistry and Physics Internal Assessment coaching

HL and SL

The scientific investigation is a single piece of work worth a fifth of the subject grade. Coaching covers research-question framing, control of variables, uncertainty propagation and the evaluation section, all on the student's own data. The student designs, measures, writes; the tutor questions and gives feedback.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families in this cluster actually buy tutoring, and what each is for. All IB Gram lessons are one-to-one and online; the in-home option below describes what the Dubai market offers so you can compare it honestly against what we do.

Weekly one-to-one online, term-time

One or two 60-minute sessions a week, same slot, same tutor, running alongside the school's own scheme of work. The tutor sees the marked class work and the school's assessment calendar, so the session targets what the subject teacher has just flagged rather than a generic syllabus order. This is what most Academic City Diploma families settle into after a trial.

  • Same tutor each week, so progress is cumulative
  • Session content driven by the student's own marked work
  • Scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, weekday evenings or weekend mornings
  • No travel time at either end, which is what makes a 5pm slot possible

Internal Assessment and Extended Essay coaching blocks

A short, finite block of sessions timed to the school's internal deadlines rather than to a weekly rhythm. The tutor questions the research question, reviews the student's own draft against the published criteria, and gives written feedback the student then acts on. The student writes every word. That boundary is not negotiable and it is what separates coaching from the essay mills in these search results.

  • Framed around the published assessment criteria for that subject
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts, never text supplied for them
  • Scheduled backwards from the school's internal deadline
  • Usually four to eight sessions across a term

Pre-session intensive before the May exams

A compressed run of sessions in the final weeks, built around past-paper work under timed conditions and the specific question types the student keeps dropping marks on. Availability is tightest here, because every Diploma family in Dubai wants the same eight weeks. Booking in the first term costs the same and secures the slot.

  • Timed past-paper practice with mark-scheme walkthrough
  • Command-term drilling, which recovers marks faster than new content
  • Two to three sessions a week in the run-up, by agreement
  • Honest assessment at the start of what six weeks can and cannot achieve

In-home tutoring in this area, and why we do not do it

The Dubai market does offer tutors who travel. Published rates for in-home one-to-one sit roughly between AED 180 and AED 500 an hour including travel, per Bestimate's 2026 rate table and the rates home tutors advertise. The money buys presence. It does not buy a wider choice of specialists, and in Academic City it narrows the choice considerably. IB Gram delivers to this neighbourhood online instead.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to a UAE address; home visits are an India-only service
  • In-home rates in this market carry a travel premium of roughly AED 50-150 an hour
  • A tutor within driving distance of Academic City may not teach your child's subject at HL
  • Online removes the geography from the matching decision entirely

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai International Academic City

01

What a search for an IB home tutor in Dubai International Academic City is actually asking

It is asking two questions at once, and they have different answers. The first is 'can my child get one-to-one IB help without me driving anywhere', and the answer is yes. The second is 'will a qualified IB Diploma tutor physically come to my flat in Academic City', and the honest answer from IB Gram is no — we deliver one-to-one lessons live online and reserve home visits for our India service. Saying so in the first eighty words is more useful than burying it.

The reason the first question matters more than the second is the Academic City map. This is a free zone built around university campuses, with one British-curriculum secondary inside it. The IB Diploma schools its families use are in Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Nad Al Sheba, Al Warqa and Al Garhoud. A tutor who lives within a short drive of your building is not thereby a tutor who lives within a short drive of an IB school, and the two facts have almost nothing to do with each other.

What a parent in this district is really optimising is the gap between the school bus arriving and bedtime. That gap is roughly three hours on a weekday, and an in-home session consumes between twenty and fifty minutes of it in travel at each end — the tutor's travel, which you pay for, and the dead time around it, which you absorb. An online session starts when the laptop opens. For a family doing two sessions a week across a Diploma year, that difference compounds into something like forty hours.

So the rest of this page treats the question as a comparison rather than a yes or no. Academic City against the neighbourhoods either side of it, in-home against online, and the real numbers for each. The conclusion is the same in Silicon Oasis, Mirdif and International City as it is here, and the next section shows why.

02

Academic City against Silicon Oasis, Mirdif and International City: four neighbourhoods compared

The four neighbourhoods in this cluster look different on a map and behave almost identically in practice. What changes between them is the school run and the time a session can realistically begin. What does not change is the number of IB Diploma subject specialists available within driving distance, because that number is set by the Dubai labour market and not by your address.

Mirdif has the shortest IB school run of the four, because Uptown International School runs the full continuum within the district. Silicon Oasis has GEMS Wellington Academy on its doorstep. Academic City has neither — its own secondary is British route — so Diploma families here commute. International City has the longest run of all, with no international school inside the district at all, which is why sessions for children living around the clusters tend to start after six.

Read the table as a logistics table, not a quality table. None of these neighbourhoods is a better place to be an IB student than another. The commute differences are real and worth planning around; the tutor-pool differences are not real at all once delivery is online, which is the point the last column makes.

One more thing the table cannot show: traffic direction. A session timed at 4.30pm for a child travelling from Nad Al Sheba back to Academic City is a session that starts at 4.50pm two days out of five. Families who schedule for the worst case rather than the average stop losing the first ten minutes of every lesson to a parked car on Al Ain Road.

What tutoring costs in this market, and what the drive premium buys

Start with the monthly number, because that is the one a family actually budgets. A single weekly hour with a qualified subject tutor, online, works out at roughly AED 600 to AED 1,200 a month on Bestimate's 2026 estimates for mid-tier tutoring, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more a month for specialist exam-year support. Published monthly packages in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Working back to an hourly figure, the market splits into clear bands. University-student and budget online tutors advertise from AED 45 to AED 150 — EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one, travel included, runs AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at 200 to 500. Named and examiner-led tutors go higher: TutorChase quotes AED 270 and BartyED AED 650.

The gap between the online and in-home bands is the travel premium, and it is roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour. It is not a markup for greed; a tutor crossing Dubai at 5pm is spending ninety unpaid minutes to deliver sixty paid ones, and that has to be priced in. The question for an Academic City parent is simply what those AED 50 to 150 an hour buy. They buy a person in the room. They do not buy subject depth, and in this district they actively reduce the pool you can choose from.

None of these are IB Gram's prices. They are the market, attributed to whoever published them, as read in October 2026. For our own rates, start with the free trial lesson and the consultation that follows it, where the figure is quoted against your child's actual subjects and level rather than against a table.

Why the answer comes out the same in all four neighbourhoods

  • Dubai, 2024-25: 387,441 private school students, 227 schools, 17 curricula, IB at 7% of enrolment
  • UK curriculum accounts for 37% of Dubai private enrolment, Indian 26%, US 14%
  • The specialist pool is set emirate-wide, not neighbourhood by neighbourhood
  • Online delivery gives every one of these four neighbourhoods the same pool
  • Where a niche subject genuinely cannot be staffed, we say so instead of substituting a generalist

Here is the arithmetic that makes the comparison collapse. Dubai had 387,441 private school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, and the International Baccalaureate accounted for 7% of that enrolment. Seven per cent of a market that size is a substantial number of students, but it is spread across every programme from PYP to DP and across the whole emirate. The subset sitting Chemistry HL in any given May session, in the eastern suburbs specifically, is small.

Now apply the supply side. A tutor who can teach Chemistry HL to Diploma standard needs the subject at degree level, familiarity with the current assessment model, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Filter that population by willingness to drive to Academic City at 5pm on a Tuesday and the list gets shorter again. In Mirdif the list is slightly longer; in International City slightly shorter. In none of the four is it long enough to let you choose between three candidates on merit.

That is why distance is the wrong variable to optimise. If the binding constraint were travel time, moving from International City to Mirdif would solve the problem, and it does not. The binding constraint is the size of the specialist pool, and the only lever that changes it is removing the travel requirement — which is what online delivery does. A family in Al Khawaneej and a family in Silicon Oasis then face the same choice of Chemistry HL tutors, which is a larger choice than either had before.

The honest caveat: this is not infinite. Some combinations remain hard to staff at short notice — Diploma Further Mathematics, less-taught Group 2 languages, Music, Film. When that happens we say so at the consultation rather than filling the slot with a generalist, and we tell you what the realistic wait is.

05

The Diploma year counted backwards from the May session

Almost no tutoring page in this market names a session, a deadline or a results date. That absence is strange, because the calendar is the single most useful thing a parent can be handed. UAE IB schools run the May examination session. Working backwards from it produces a plan rather than a panic, and the pressure point is not where most families expect.

The crunch is the January-February window of DP2. Internal Assessments in four or five subjects, the Extended Essay final submission, the TOK essay and the school's mock examinations all land inside a few weeks. A student who has done nothing on the Extended Essay by the October of DP2 is not behind on the Extended Essay; they are about to be behind on everything else, because the hours have to come from somewhere.

Specific IB session and results dates are deliberately not published here. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, and a wrong date on a page a parent plans around is worse than no date. Confirm every date with your child's IB coordinator or on ibo.org directly. What is safe to publish is the shape of the year and the order of the milestones, which does not move.

For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications, the dates are sourced and the rule is different. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for UAE candidates — the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. For reference on how far ahead deadlines sit: the Pearson November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

KHDA, the inspection bands, and what a school report does not tell you

Private schools in Dubai are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Every school your child might attend from Academic City — in Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa or Nad Al Sheba — is inspected by KHDA and given a published rating on a six-band scale. The reports are public and worth reading before a school visit rather than after.

What the bands tell you is school-level quality across many measures. What they do not tell you is how a specific department performs in a specific Diploma subject in a specific year. An Outstanding school can have a Physics HL cohort that lost its specialist in September; a Good school can have the strongest Mathematics department on this side of Dubai. Read the inspection report's subject-level commentary, not just the headline band, and then ask the Diploma coordinator directly about staffing in the two subjects your child cares about most.

KHDA is also the body that sets the mandatory-subject rules, and it is worth knowing that it regulates schools rather than private tutors. A private individual tutoring in Dubai operates under the MoHRE private tuition work permit, not under KHDA. A tutoring business with premises and staff needs a separate KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no KHDA permit and is not KHDA approved — the phrase appears on competitor pages and it means something specific that most of them do not hold either.

Context for fees: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Dubai's 2026-27 intake also adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three IB, creating 16,846 new places. For families in this cluster weighing a school move against tutoring, that supply change is relevant.

KHDA INSPECTION BANDS AND WHAT TO CHECK UNDERNEATH THEM
Published bandWhat it indicates at school levelWhat to verify for your child's subject
OutstandingQuality is consistently high across the inspected areasWhether the specific HL subject has continuous specialist staffing
Very GoodQuality is high in most areas with identified strengthsDiploma results by subject, not the school average
GoodThe expected standard for Dubai private schoolsWhich departments the report singles out as weaker
AcceptableMinimum expected standard; improvement areas namedWhether the named areas include your child's subjects
WeakQuality is below the minimum expected standardWhat the school's published improvement plan commits to and by when
Very WeakQuality is significantly below the standardWhether a move is realistic before the next assessment cycle
07

Academic honesty: the line a tutor may not cross on an IA, EE or TOK essay

  • Coaching allowed: subject teaching, questioning, criteria explanation, feedback on the student's own drafts
  • Not allowed: supplied text, rewritten paragraphs, chosen topics, generated or processed data
  • The consequence of malpractice falls on the student, not on the tutor
  • We do not publish or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson papers, mark schemes or boundary tables — we cite and link the official sources

This matters more in these search results than in most, because at least one page competing for the same query sells completed Internal Assessments. That is not tutoring. Under IB academic-honesty rules, submitting work that is not your own is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student: a subject grade withheld, or the Diploma itself. No tutor is exposed by it. The sixteen-year-old is.

So the boundary needs stating in operational terms rather than as a disclaimer. A tutor may teach the subject content the assessment rests on. A tutor may question a research question until it is answerable. A tutor may explain what criterion C asks for and what a top-band response looks like in general terms. A tutor may read the student's own draft and give written feedback on it. A tutor may teach referencing, data handling and uncertainty treatment as skills.

A tutor may not supply text that ends up in the submission. May not rewrite a paragraph into better English. May not choose the Extended Essay topic. May not generate the data, process it, or produce the graphs. May not draft a TOK knowledge claim for the student to adopt. The test is simple: if the student could not explain, in their own words and without notes, why a sentence in their submission says what it says, that sentence should not be there.

Practically, this makes IA coaching look like a conversation rather than a correction. The tutor asks what the independent variable actually controls, why the uncertainty was estimated that way, what the evaluation section concedes. The student goes away and rewrites. That is slower than the alternative and it is the only version that survives moderation, and it is also the version that teaches the student something they keep.

08

Arabic, Islamic Education and UAE Social Studies alongside the Diploma

Every Dubai private school teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies regardless of which international curriculum it is licensed for, and KHDA's own guidance states that these requirements must be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. For an Academic City family, this is the part of the timetable nobody explains at the open day, and it is a common source of surprise when the first report arrives.

The rules are specific. KHDA requires schools to organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students; non-Arabs are taught Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies in the school's licensed-curriculum language.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. There is also a hard constraint on content: for these subjects, the use of any different or additional material without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Schools must ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects.

What that means for tutoring is narrower than parents expect. Support for Arabic as an additional language is ordinary language teaching and entirely available. Support for the mandatory Islamic Education and Social Studies content is constrained by the Ministry's rule on material, so the right first step is to ask the school what it will and will not accept. For the Diploma itself, note that MoE equivalency for the British track explicitly excludes Arabic and Islamic Education from the five-subject count.

09

MoE equivalency and what an IB graduate from this cluster needs for a UAE university

Equivalency is the Ministry of Education process that converts a foreign school certificate into something a UAE university can admit against. It is not something a tutoring company performs, and no tutoring is required for it. It is worth understanding in DP1 rather than discovering in DP2, because the subject choices that satisfy it are made early.

For the British track the requirements are published and specific. A student must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic Education are not included among those five. One ranking competitor states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the published rule is five, excluding those two.

For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT; mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. For the IB specifically, we publish no points threshold, because no IB equivalency figure in this project has been read on a Ministry of Education source. Check it on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate, and treat any page quoting an IB points number without that citation with suspicion.

The practical sequence for a family in Academic City: confirm with your child's school which of its qualifications are listed as accredited, check the university's own admission page for the specific programme, then approach the Ministry channel for attestation with the documents they ask for. Build the subject choices around that in DP1 and the paperwork in DP2 is administrative rather than urgent.

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach privately in Dubai?

This is the question with the clearest answer on the page, and almost nobody competing for this query addresses it. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you by anyone.

The permit is granted free of charge for two years. That is worth repeating because it removes a line of argument: a tutor cannot charge you more on the grounds of permit costs, because there are none. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The application route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated two-working-day completion time.

One restriction matters for Academic City and Silicon Oasis families in particular, where several schools sit close together. The permit carries a code of conduct that bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school. Marketing 'your child's own teacher, privately' is something to decline rather than to seek.

How you verify it as a parent: ask directly whether the individual teaching your child holds a current MoHRE private tuition work permit, and ask to see it. A tutor who holds one will show you without hesitation. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute; IB Gram has no premises in the UAE and does not hold one, and no page of ours should ever suggest otherwise.

Where we tutor

Academic City and the neighbourhoods it is compared against

Families searching for an IB home tutor in Dubai International Academic City are usually also searching the neighbourhood next door, because the school catchments overlap. Here is what each of those neighbourhoods actually looks like for an IB family, and what changes between them.

Dubai International Academic City

The education free zone off Al Ain Road, built for university branch campuses. Dubai English Speaking College sits inside it on the British route. IB Diploma families here drive out, most often towards Silicon Oasis or Nad Al Sheba.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Immediately adjacent, and the closest thing to an IB anchor for this side of Dubai thanks to GEMS Wellington Academy. Dense apartment stock, young families, and a 4pm finish that makes a 5pm session realistic rather than optimistic.

Mirdif

Villa and low-rise, with Uptown International School running the full IB continuum and Star International School Mirdif on the British route. Mirdif families have the shortest IB school run of the four and still face the same specialist shortage at HL.

International City

The country-themed clusters around Dragon Mart in Al Warsan. No international school inside the district, so children travel to Al Warqa, Mirdif, Academic City or Silicon Oasis. Longest school run of the four, which pushes sessions past 6pm.

Al Warqa

Home to Universal American School, which runs IB programmes, and to GEMS Our Own English High School on the Indian curriculum. A mixed catchment where IB and CBSE families live on the same street and ask completely different tutoring questions.

Nad Al Hamar

Between Al Warqa and Ras Al Khor, with quick access to Nad Al Sheba schools via Ras Al Khor Road. Families here often choose GEMS Modern Academy or North London Collegiate School Dubai and accept a 25-minute morning run for IB continuity.

Al Rashidiya and Al Garhoud

Older established Dubai, with Deira International School running the Diploma in Al Garhoud. Closer to the airport than to Academic City, but a common fallback catchment for Academic City families who want IB without the Nad Al Sheba drive.

Al Khawaneej and Al Mizhar

The far eastern edge, large plots, Al Mizhar American Academy on the US curriculum. Thinnest IB provision of any neighbourhood in this cluster, and the one where online delivery changes the available tutor pool most sharply.

Dubai Festival City

Waterfront apartments and a short run across Ras Al Khor to the Garhoud and Nad Al Sheba schools. Traffic on the Festival City interchange at pickup time is the practical constraint on how early an afternoon session can start.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai International Academic City

Academic City and Silicon Oasis

The immediate catchment. One British-route secondary inside Academic City itself, and the nearest IB Diploma provision one junction away in Silicon Oasis. Students we support attend schools across this cluster; no affiliation is implied.

  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Wellington Academy - Silicon Oasis
  • The Indian International School Dubai
  • Nibras International School
  • GEMS FirstPoint School

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Mizhar

The eastern suburbs, where the IB continuum schools this cluster relies on actually sit. Uptown International School and Universal American School carry most of the local IB enrolment between them.

  • Uptown International School
  • Universal American School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Al Mizhar American Academy
  • GEMS Our Own English High School, Al Warqa

Nad Al Sheba and Al Garhoud

The Diploma-heavy cluster Academic City families commute to when they want a long-established IB school. Longer morning run, deeper subject offer, and the schools most often named in enquiries from this side of the city.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Deira International School
  • The Indian High School, Dubai

Schools are named here as context for the local education ecosystem; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subjects, levels and session

Not just 'IB Maths'. Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, HL or SL, which school, which May session, and what the last piece of marked work came back as. Five minutes of specificity here is what makes the match a match rather than a guess.

  2. 02

We check the specialist pool honestly

We look for a tutor who teaches that exact subject at that exact level, and we tell you what we find. If the combination is one of the genuinely hard ones to staff at short notice, you hear that at this stage, with a realistic timeframe, rather than after a disappointing first lesson.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson, one-to-one, online

A real lesson on real content, not a sales call. Your child works; the tutor diagnoses. Afterwards you get a plain summary of what the tutor found and what they would do over the next eight weeks. If it is not right, say so and nothing further is owed.

  4. 04

Agree the rhythm around the school calendar

One or two sessions a week in term time, a finite block for Internal Assessment coaching, or an intensive before the May session. We schedule on Gulf Standard Time and around the school run from whichever of these neighbourhoods you are travelling from.

  5. 05

Review against the school's own marking

Progress is measured against the work the school marks, not against our own impression. Every few weeks you get a short written note: what has moved, what has not, and what changes next. If the tutor is not the right fit, we change the tutor rather than defending the choice.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Geography stops deciding who teaches your child

From Academic City, a 20-minute drive radius is a weak filter on IB subject expertise. Online delivery replaces that filter with the only one that matters: does this tutor teach Chemistry HL, or Mathematics AA HL, to Diploma standard. The same pool is available from Al Khawaneej as from Mirdif.

No travel premium in the price

In-home rates in this market carry roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour of travel cost, which is reasonable for the tutor and buys you presence rather than expertise. Removing the drive removes the premium and the dead time either side of the lesson, which is the part no invoice shows.

We state what we are not

Not KHDA approved, because that is a permit issued to training institutes with premises and we have none. Not partnered with any named school. No published star rating we cannot evidence with countable reviews. Every AED figure on this page is attributed to whoever published it and dated.

Coursework support that will not cost your child the Diploma

On an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or TOK essay, the student writes and we question. No supplied text, no rewritten paragraphs, no chosen topics. It is slower than what the essay mills in these results offer and it is the only version that survives IB moderation.

The calendar, counted backwards, before you need it

The Diploma pressure point is the January-February window of DP2, not May. Families who plan from that date backwards buy fewer hours than families who react to it. The exam-session table on this page exists because no competitor page in this cluster names a session at all.

One tutor, cumulative work

Same tutor every week, working from your child's own marked papers and the school's assessment calendar. A rota of tutors restarts the diagnosis every session, which is the most expensive way to buy tuition that exists.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai International Academic City: your questions answered

Can I get an IB home tutor in Dubai International Academic City?+

You can get one-to-one IB tutoring for a child living in Dubai International Academic City, and with IB Gram it is delivered live online rather than by a tutor travelling to your address. Home visits are a service we run in India only, not in the UAE. The Dubai market does include tutors who travel, at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel according to published rate tables. What that premium buys is presence in the room. Given how few IB Diploma specialists live within a short drive of Academic City, online delivery widens the choice of tutor considerably rather than narrowing it.

Is Academic City or Silicon Oasis better placed for finding an IB Diploma specialist?+

Silicon Oasis is marginally better placed, because GEMS Wellington Academy sits inside the district and the school run is shorter, which makes a 4.45pm session realistic rather than hopeful. But the difference is logistical, not substantive. The number of adults in Dubai who can teach Chemistry HL or Mathematics AA HL to Diploma standard is set emirate-wide, and a ten-minute difference in drive time does not change it. Once lessons are online, both neighbourhoods draw from the same pool on the same terms, and so do Mirdif, Al Warqa, Nad Al Hamar and International City.

What does in-home IB tuition cost around Academic City compared with online?+

Market figures read in October 2026 put in-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate's rate table at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertising 200 to 500. Qualified online subject tutors sit lower, around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Monthly packages seen in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are market rates from the providers named, not IB Gram's prices.

How late can a weekday session start if my child comes home from school in Silicon Oasis?+

From Silicon Oasis or Mirdif, where the school sits inside the district, 4.45pm is realistic. From Academic City to a Silicon Oasis school, 5pm. From International City, where children travel out to Al Warqa or Mirdif, 6pm is the honest answer. From Nad Al Hamar to a Nad Al Sheba school, around 5.30pm. Schedule for the worst case rather than the average journey: a 4.30pm slot booked against a good day becomes a 4.50pm start twice a week, and ten minutes lost from every lesson across a Diploma year is a substantial amount of paid time.

Which IB schools do families in this part of eastern Dubai actually use?+

Academic City's own secondary, Dubai English Speaking College, runs the British route to IGCSE and A Level rather than the IB. Diploma families in this cluster most often name GEMS Wellington Academy in Silicon Oasis, Uptown International School in Mirdif, Universal American School in Al Warqa, and GEMS Modern Academy, North London Collegiate School Dubai and Repton School Dubai in Nad Al Sheba, with Deira International School in Al Garhoud as a further option. Those schools are named as local context; IB Gram has no affiliation or partnership with any of them, and each is inspected and rated by KHDA.

Does a private tutor in Dubai need a MoHRE permit, and can I check it?+

Yes. The private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount quoted to you as unverified. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, so no tutor can price it into their rate. Ask the individual teaching your child directly whether they hold a current permit and ask to see it. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing.

Can a tutor help with my daughter's Chemistry IA without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can teach the chemistry the investigation rests on, question the research question until it is answerable, explain what each assessment criterion asks for, and give written feedback on your daughter's own draft. A tutor cannot design the experiment for her, generate or process her data, produce her graphs, or supply any text that ends up in the submission. The test we use is whether she could explain, unprompted and without notes, why every sentence says what it says. Submitting work that is not her own is malpractice, and the consequence falls on her, not on the tutor.

Which IB Diploma subjects are hardest to find a tutor for near Academic City?+

By residence, almost all of them at Higher Level — the specialist pool in the eastern suburbs is thin, which is the whole reason this page is written as a comparison. Once delivery is online, the genuinely difficult combinations narrow to Further Mathematics, less commonly taught Group 2 languages, Music and Film, and occasionally Physics HL at short notice in the weeks before mocks. If your child's combination is one of those, we tell you at the consultation and give a realistic wait, rather than filling the slot with a generalist and letting you discover the mismatch in lesson two.

How many sessions a week do Diploma families in this cluster usually start with?+

One session a week per subject is the usual starting point, and most families begin with one subject rather than three. That is enough to establish whether the diagnosis was right and whether the tutor and student work well together, and it keeps the monthly figure in the AED 600 to 1,200 band that Bestimate's 2026 estimates give for mid-tier weekly tutoring. Two sessions a week makes sense in the final eight to ten weeks before the May session, or during the January and February window when Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and mocks collide.

My son says he learns better face to face. Will online lessons actually work for him?+

Often the objection is not about the screen but about attention, and the fix is structural rather than geographic. One-to-one over video, with a shared document, the student's own marked paper on screen and the tutor watching the working as it appears, gives less room to drift than a group class and roughly the same as a person at the table. What makes it fail is a laptop in a living room with a television on. Give him a door that closes and a wired connection if you can, and judge it on the free trial lesson rather than in advance.

What does KHDA actually regulate, and does that include private tutors?+

KHDA regulates private schools in Dubai; u.ae describes it as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. It inspects schools, publishes ratings on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and sets the mandatory-subject requirements. It does not license individual private tutors — that is MoHRE's permit. A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram has no UAE premises and holds no KHDA permit, so the phrase 'KHDA-approved tutors' is not one we use and is worth questioning wherever you see it.

Do IB students in Dubai need Ministry of Education equivalency for a UAE university?+

Equivalency is the process that converts a foreign school certificate into something a UAE university can admit against, and it is administered by the Ministry of Education rather than by any tutoring company. For the British track the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. For the IB specifically we publish no points threshold, because no IB figure in this project has been read on a Ministry source. Verify it on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority.

Do session times change during Ramadan for families in Academic City?+

Yes, and most families in this cluster ask for it. School days shorten during Ramadan, which frees the afternoon, but concentration in the late afternoon is usually poor and a session scheduled then is often wasted money. The two slots that work are mid-morning at weekends and after Iftar on weekdays. Because tutors are not travelling, a post-Iftar slot is a scheduling question rather than a logistics one. Tell us in advance which pattern you want for the month and we fix the slot before Ramadan starts rather than rearranging week by week.

We tried one lesson and it did not click - can we swap tutors?+

You say so and we change the tutor. The free trial lesson exists precisely so that this decision is made before any money moves, and nothing further is owed if the trial does not convince you. If a mismatch surfaces later, after three or four sessions, we would rather reassign than defend the original match, because a tutor the student does not want to talk to teaches nothing. What we will not do is rotate tutors as a matter of course: a different person each week restarts the diagnosis every time, which is the most expensive way to buy tuition.

Does my child still take Arabic and Islamic Education at an IB school in Dubai?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's guidance states these requirements must be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on 40-minute lesson units. For these subjects, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited, so ask your school what tutoring material it will accept.

When should we start if the May session is six weeks away?+

Six weeks is not too late, but it changes what the sessions are for. There is no time to build missing content from scratch across a whole syllabus, and any tutor promising that is not being straight with you. What six weeks does buy is substantial: timed past-paper practice, command-term discipline, and systematic work on the two or three question types the student keeps dropping marks on. That is often worth several marks a paper. The first session is diagnostic, and at the end of it you get an honest statement of what the remaining weeks can realistically achieve.

Start with a trial lesson, from whichever of these neighbourhoods you are in

If your child is on an IB programme and you live in Dubai International Academic City, Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa, Nad Al Hamar or International City, the practical next step is the same one. Tell us the exact subject and level, the school, and what the last marked piece of work came back as. We check whether a specialist in that combination is free, say plainly if one is not, and put a free trial lesson in the diary at a time that survives the school run. Lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time, with the tutor chosen for the subject rather than the postcode.
