IB Maths Tutor in Arabian Ranches 3

An IB maths tutor is only useful once you know which of the four courses your child is sitting. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are separate qualifications with separate papers and separate calculator rules, and Higher Level adds a third paper to both. IB Gram matches a tutor to the exact course and level, teaching one-to-one over live video into Arabian Ranches 3 on Gulf Standard Time. The first lesson is a marked past paper, and it is free.

  • Matched to the course: AA or AI, Higher or Standard Level
  • First lesson is a real past paper, marked against the published scheme
  • Lessons run one-to-one over live video, not as a visit to the villa
  • Exploration support is feedback on the student's own draft, never drafting

Four courses, one word on the timetable

The word maths on a Diploma timetable covers four different qualifications. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, the same course at Standard Level, Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, and that course at Standard Level. They share five syllabus topics and almost nothing else that matters to a tutor. AA sits a first paper with no calculator permitted; AI permits the device on every paper. AI carries substantially more statistics; AA carries proof. Higher Level in both adds a third paper worth a fifth of the grade and rewards a skill the first two do not test.

That is why the first question in any booking conversation from Arabian Ranches 3 is which course, and the second is which level. A parent who answers maths, Higher Level gets a tutor who may have spent six years teaching modelling and regression to AI students and never once prepared anybody for a non-calculator algebra paper. The content overlap hides the difference until a mock, at which point a term has gone.

The delivery note, plainly, because the search phrase deserves a straight answer. IB Gram does not send anyone to an address in Arabian Ranches 3 and does not make home visits in Dubai; that service runs only in India. Mathematics lessons here are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, on a shared whiteboard the student writes on. For mathematics specifically that format has an unusual advantage: the tutor watches the working appear line by line, which is where the error always is, rather than being handed a finished answer to judge. A recording of every board stays with the family.

This page is written from the syllabus outwards rather than from the neighbourhood inwards. The two courses compared properly. The five topics with what Higher Level adds to each. The papers with their durations, weightings and calculator rules. The exploration criterion by criterion with its mark allocations, because no competitor page in this market names a single criterion. Then a taxonomy of where marks actually leave a mathematics script, which is a shorter and more mechanical list than most families expect.

Two things are deliberately absent. There is no IB exam or results date anywhere on this page: the IB's own site blocks automated checking, so nothing in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and your school's coordinator is the correct source for any date a family needs to plan around. And there is no promise about a grade, because nobody can honestly make one. What a weekly hour can change is narrower and more useful than a promise: method shown where the mark scheme awards it, rounding held to the final line, calculator results checked rather than trusted, answers written to the depth the question asks for, timing rehearsed until the last question stops arriving after the clock, and an exploration that earns its reflection marks instead of surrendering them. Those six things are enough to move a band, and they are the only things an outside tutor controls.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics support in a Dubai IB school is requested at four points, and they need different people. Middle years criterion work, the two Diploma routes, and the occasional Extended Essay written in mathematics, which is a different task again from either course.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

MYP Mathematics, standard and extended

Marked against four criteria rather than on a percentage, with knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts each scored 1 to 8. A student can be fluent at calculation and still sit on a low criterion B, because investigating patterns asks for generalisation and justification rather than answers. Extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is the stream that leads comfortably into Higher Level.

In Dubai the decision between standard and extended MYP mathematics is usually taken in MYP 4, two years before the Diploma course choice, and it quietly narrows the later options. Families in the Dubailand belt often discover the link only when a DP1 teacher recommends Applications and Interpretation. One diagnostic session in MYP 4 is cheaper than the conversation two years later.

AAAges 16-19 · DP1 to DP2

DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

The algebraic route. Proof, functions, trigonometric identities and calculus carry the course, and the first paper is sat without a calculator at both levels. Higher Level adds proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors and deeper calculus, plus a third paper of sustained problem-solving. It is the route competitive engineering, physics, mathematics and economics courses normally expect, which is why the choice has consequences beyond the Diploma.

Almost every Dubai Diploma school offers both routes, and the recommendation usually comes from a DP1 teacher looking at IGCSE performance. For a family in Arabian Ranches 3 the useful second opinion is a marked IGCSE paper read for algebraic security rather than for the overall grade, because that is the specific capacity Analysis and Approaches depends on.

AIAges 16-19 · DP1 to DP2

DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

The modelling and data route, with the calculator permitted throughout. Regression, hypothesis testing and real-context interpretation carry far more weight than in AA, and Higher Level adds graph theory and deeper statistics along with its own third paper. Students who chose it to escape algebra often meet a different demand: a correct calculation with no interpretation written around it scores poorly, and there is a great deal of writing.

Applications and Interpretation is widely taken in Dubai and widely misunderstood as the easier option. For university purposes it is accepted for many business, design and social science courses and is frequently insufficient for engineering, so the choice should be checked against the named universities a student is considering rather than against the general reputation of the course.

EEAges 16-19 · DP1 to DP2

Extended Essay in mathematics

A 4,000-word independent research essay in mathematics, which is a separate piece of work from the exploration and judged against the Extended Essay criteria rather than the mathematics ones. It needs a question that genuinely requires mathematics to answer, a method the subject recognises, and a student willing to read beyond the syllabus. Supervision is subject-matched because a mathematics essay and a history essay share criteria and share no method.

Mathematics is a less common Extended Essay subject in Dubai schools, which means a student choosing it may have a supervisor whose own background is elsewhere in the sciences. That is the situation in which outside subject-matched supervision earns its hour, working alongside the school's supervisor rather than in place of them.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A mathematics page should name the parts of the course rather than a list of unrelated subjects. These are the four courses and the five topics they share, with what each one assesses and where marks leave. The topic descriptions are the ones a tutor uses to plan a term, not a syllabus summary.

Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level

HL

Three papers, the first without a calculator, plus the exploration. Proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors and extended calculus sit on top of the common content. The third paper rewards sustained problem-solving across two long questions and needs its own timed practice; revising Papers 1 and 2 harder does nothing for it.

Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level

SL

Two papers, the first without a calculator, plus the exploration. The algebraic demand is real even at Standard Level, and students arriving from a weaker IGCSE algebra base struggle on Paper 1 while performing acceptably on Paper 2. Non-calculator fluency is a trainable habit rather than a talent.

Applications and Interpretation, Higher Level

HL

Three papers with the calculator permitted throughout, plus the exploration. Graph theory, complex numbers used in modelling and substantial statistics distinguish it from the Standard Level course. Marks concentrate in interpretation: the mathematics is produced by the device and the credit is in what the student says about it.

Applications and Interpretation, Standard Level

SL

Two papers with the calculator permitted, plus the exploration. The most commonly taken mathematics course in UAE Diploma cohorts and the one most often chosen for the wrong reason. Students who expected less work meet a syllabus heavy in data handling and written interpretation instead of algebra.

The mathematical exploration

Both courses, both levels

A piece of independent mathematical writing worth 20% of the grade, marked out of 20 across five criteria. The topic has to be the student's own and the mathematics has to sit at the level of the course. Most lost marks are in communication and reflection rather than in the mathematics itself.

Topic 1: Number and algebra

SL and HL

Sequences, series, exponents, logarithms and the binomial expansion, with proof, complex numbers and systems of equations added at Higher Level. Sign errors in logarithmic manipulation and unjustified steps in proof account for most of the losses, and both respond quickly to disciplined practice.

Topic 2: Functions

SL and HL

Transformations, quadratics, rational and exponential behaviour, with further graphing and composite work at Higher Level. The recurring loss is a sketch with no asymptote or intercept stated, which costs marks awarded for exactly those features rather than for the shape of the curve.

Topic 3: Geometry and trigonometry

SL and HL

Triangle work, circular functions, identities and equations, with vectors and the equations of lines and planes at Higher Level. Mixing radians and degrees inside a single question is the commonest single error on the whole syllabus and the easiest to eliminate.

Topic 4: Statistics and probability

SL and HL

Data handling, correlation and distributions, far heavier in Applications and Interpretation than in Analysis and Approaches. Students regularly calculate a correct statistic and then describe it rather than interpreting it in the context the question set, which is separately credited.

Topic 5: Calculus

SL and HL

Differentiation, integration, kinematics and optimisation, with implicit differentiation, differential equations and series approximations at Higher Level. Chain and product rules applied without checking the inner function produce confident wrong answers, which is why one algebraic check per result is worth teaching as a habit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mathematics support divides by what is actually broken rather than by how many hours a family wants to buy. These three arrangements cover almost every request that arrives from this community, and each has a different first session.

Weekly one-to-one on a named course

One course, one level, one fixed hour. The first session is a past paper from that course, worked rather than revised, so the plan starts from a marked script instead of an impression. For Analysis and Approaches that means a non-calculator paper; for Applications and Interpretation it means a paper with the device in play from the first question.

  • Course and level confirmed before the first lesson, not assumed
  • Shared whiteboard, so the tutor sees the working appear line by line
  • Calculator model matched to the one the school uses
  • Written notes naming the topics worked and the errors seen
  • Timed sections introduced from the fourth or fifth session

Exploration supervision, separate from the papers

A different job from teaching the course, and priced and scheduled as one. Sessions work on the topic choice, the mathematics the student has decided to use, the five criteria and the reflection. The student writes every word. The school's teacher remains the person who approves the proposal and gives the permitted round of written feedback.

  • Topic narrowed by questioning until the student owns it
  • Mathematics taught at the level of the course, not above or below it
  • Each criterion explained with what a strong response looks like
  • Feedback given on the student's own draft, criterion by criterion
  • The honesty line stated at the first session, in plain terms

A route-choice consultation before DP1 locks

One or two sessions, bought deliberately as a decision rather than as teaching. A marked IGCSE or MYP paper read for algebraic security, the two courses compared against the degrees the student is considering, and an honest recommendation. It is the cheapest intervention available in a Diploma mathematics career and the one families almost never buy.

  • A real marked paper rather than a predicted grade as the evidence
  • Entry requirements checked against the named universities in play
  • Both courses explained by assessment structure, not by reputation
  • A written recommendation the family can take to the school
  • No standing booking proposed unless the student actually needs one

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Arabian Ranches 3

01

Which course your child is sitting, and why it decides everything else

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation share five syllabus topics and diverge almost everywhere a mark is awarded. The first difference is the calculator. AA sits its first paper with no calculator permitted at either level, which makes exact-value work, algebraic manipulation and mental fluency examinable skills in their own right. AI permits the device on every paper, which moves the credit from producing a result to interpreting one. A student can be excellent at one of those and poor at the other, and a report card showing a grade in maths will not tell you which.

The second difference is weight of statistics against weight of proof. AI carries substantial statistical content, including regression and hypothesis testing, and expects written interpretation in real contexts. AA carries proof, identities and a heavier calculus demand, and at Higher Level adds proof by induction and complex numbers. Students who moved to AI expecting less work routinely find they have traded algebra for writing, which is not the trade they thought they were making.

The third difference is the university consequence, and it is the one that costs money later. Competitive engineering, physics, mathematics and economics courses normally expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Applications and Interpretation is accepted for many business, design and social science programmes. A student who takes AI in DP1 and decides on engineering in DP2 is in a position that gets harder every month. Checking the requirement of the actual universities under consideration, before the choice locks, takes one session.

For an Arabian Ranches 3 family the practical step is small and specific: find out from the school which course and which level appears on the child's record, and get a marked mathematics paper rather than a predicted grade. Those two pieces of information turn a vague request for a maths tutor into a solvable matching problem.

02

The five topics, and what Higher Level adds to each

Both courses are organised into the same five topics, which is why a parent can read a scheme of work from either course and recognise the shape. Number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, calculus. What changes between the courses is depth and emphasis; what changes between the levels is the amount of additional material sitting on top of the shared content.

That additional material is the practical problem in Dubai schools, and it is a scheduling problem rather than a difficulty problem. Higher Level content is generally taught after the common core, which places it late in DP1 or into DP2. A mock sat in the middle of that sequence tests material the student met three weeks earlier alongside material they met eighteen months earlier, and the resulting mark looks like a general weakness when it is actually a recency effect. Reading a mock script by topic rather than by total is the fastest way to see which of the two is happening.

Within each topic the losses are predictable enough to name. Logarithmic manipulation produces sign errors. Function sketches lose the marks allocated to asymptotes and intercepts because those features are never stated. Trigonometric work mixes radians and degrees inside a single question, which is the most common single error on the syllabus. Statistics produces correct values that are described rather than interpreted. Calculus applies the chain and product rules without checking the inner function, which gives a clean-looking wrong answer.

None of that list is conceptual. It is five habits, and habits are what a weekly hour is genuinely good at changing. A term spent making those five automatic moves a student's mark more reliably than a term spent revisiting the whole syllabus at a shallow depth, because the syllabus is not the thing that is broken.

03

The papers, the weightings and the calculator rule

A parent who knows the paper structure reads a mock report completely differently, so it is worth setting out. At Standard Level both courses sit two papers of ninety minutes, each worth 40% of the grade, with the exploration carrying the remaining 20%. At Higher Level both courses sit three papers: two of two hours at 30% each, and a third of one hour at 20%, with the exploration again at 20%. The calculator rule is the divider: Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without one at both levels, and every other paper in either course permits it.

The third paper is the component that gets neglected most predictably. It is one hour, worth a fifth of the grade, and built from two extended problems that unfold in stages rather than from a spread of shorter questions. The skill it rewards is persistence across a long chain of reasoning where each part depends on the last. Practising Papers 1 and 2 more does not develop it, because those papers reward breadth and speed. Students who have never attempted a third paper under time tend to lose marks in the second half of each question rather than throughout.

The non-calculator paper is the other place where preparation is specific. Exact values, surds, algebraic simplification and mental arithmetic become examinable in themselves, and a student who has done two years of work with a device on the desk has no fluency in them. This is trainable and it takes weeks rather than days: short regular non-calculator sets, every session, with the device out of reach. It is also the single clearest example of why the course matters more than the subject when matching a tutor.

The exploration sits across all of this at a fifth of the grade and is dealt with separately below, because it is a piece of writing rather than an examination and the work on it happens on a completely different timeline from paper practice.

04

The exploration, criterion by criterion, out of twenty

No competitor page researched for this market names a single assessment criterion by letter, which is remarkable for a component worth a fifth of the grade. The exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Knowing the split changes how a student spends their time, because the largest single allocation is not where most of their effort goes.

Use of mathematics carries six of the twenty marks and asks for mathematics that is relevant to the course, correct, and sufficiently sophisticated for the level. That last word is where strong students lose marks: an immaculate piece of work using mathematics from two years earlier cannot reach the top band however well written it is. Presentation and mathematical communication carry four each, and communication is the criterion most often quietly surrendered, usually by copying calculator syntax onto the page instead of rewriting results in standard notation.

Personal engagement and reflection carry three each and are the two criteria a tutor can help with most legitimately and least directly. Personal engagement asks for evidence of independent thinking and ownership, which cannot be supplied by anybody else; the only way to earn it is to pick a question the student actually cares about and make visible decisions about how to approach it. Reflection asks for critical evaluation of the results, the limitations and the mathematics used, and it is routinely answered with a closing paragraph saying the topic was interesting. That is three marks left on the table in almost every weak exploration.

The honesty line around all of this is firm and it is in the student's interest. No tutor may write any part of the exploration, choose the mathematics on the student's behalf, or edit a draft into a finished submission. What a tutor may do is ask questions until the topic belongs to the student, teach the technique the student has chosen to use, read the draft and say which criterion it falls short of and why, and teach the skill that gap reveals. The school's teacher approves the proposal and gives the permitted round of written feedback; nothing here replaces that.

05

Where mathematics marks actually go missing

This is the most useful list on the page and the shortest. After a marked paper, almost every lost mark in IB mathematics falls into one of six categories, and five of the six are mechanical. That is good news for a family deciding whether to spend an evening a week: mechanical losses respond to practice on a timescale measured in weeks rather than terms.

Method not shown is the largest. Mark schemes award method marks for the working, so a correct final answer with nothing between it and the question earns a fraction of what the question was worth. Students who have always been right do this most, because they have never needed the intermediate line. Premature rounding is next: a figure rounded mid-calculation propagates error through everything after it, producing an answer that is sensible, wrong and marked wrong. Full precision stored on the device and rounding only at the final line removes the whole category.

The calculator produces two distinct failures. One is trusting it: a misentered expression gives a confident wrong result that the student never cross-checks, where one quick algebraic sanity check would have caught it. The other is notation carried off the screen into the written answer, which costs communication marks in the exploration and accuracy marks in the papers. Both are habits, and both are visible immediately when a tutor watches the working appear on a shared board rather than receiving a finished page.

The last two are about time and about reading. Questions abandoned halfway happen because the later parts, which usually carry the heaviest marks, arrive when the clock has already gone; timed sections fix that faster than content revision does. Context ignored is the Applications and Interpretation signature: a statistic correctly produced and never interpreted, when the interpretation is separately credited. Answering the final sentence of the question, rather than only the mathematics inside it, is worth teaching explicitly.

Error classWhat it looks like on a scriptWhy it costs marksWhat removes it

Context ignoredA statistic calculated correctly and never interpretedInterpretation is separately credited, particularly in Applications and InterpretationAnswering the final sentence of the question, not only the mathematics
06

Past-paper work that teaches instead of confirming

Past papers are the most productive hour available to a Diploma mathematics student and the most commonly misused. Used wrongly they confirm what a student already does: the same paper attempted four times produces a rising score and no learning. Used properly they generate information, and the difference is entirely in whether the tutor is marking a finished attempt or sitting with the student while the attempt happens.

The productive method is slow. The student works a question live on the shared board, and the tutor stops at the moment the method goes wrong rather than at the moment the answer does. Those two moments are almost never the same line, which is why a marked script tells you less than it appears to: it records where the error surfaced, not where it began. A session that covers one question properly, back to the decision that caused the problem, is worth more than one that covers a whole paper at speed.

Order matters too. Working by topic until a topic is secure, and only then working mixed papers, produces honest signals. Working mixed papers from the start produces a score that moves for the wrong reasons and hides which topic is responsible. The test of whether topic work has landed is a question on that topic inside a mixed paper, answered unaided, a week or more after it was taught. Anything less than that is recognition rather than recall.

On sourcing: IB past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables are copyright material, and IB Gram does not host, email or supply them. They come from the school's own subscription or the IB's official channels, and a provider offering a folder of papers is handing you a copyright problem. Where material is unreleased it becomes a malpractice exposure for the student as well. A tutor's job is to work the papers with the student, which is a different thing entirely from supplying them.

07

What IB mathematics tuition costs, and what a parent can check before paying

Treat every published rate as a claim and ask what you can verify. The verifiable things are short: which course and level the tutor has taught and for how many cohorts, whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whether they name Paper 3 and the five exploration criteria without being prompted, and what they do with a draft. None of that requires trusting a price. All of it predicts whether the hour will be useful.

With that in mind, here is what the Dubai market publishes. The budget online band runs AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. The qualified online band sits at AED 150 to 300, Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one including travel is quoted at AED 180 to 500, Bestimate placing it at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists are published at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270, and a premium tier advertises examiner experience at AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

That premium band deserves one specific caution rather than a general one. Current examiner status is not something a family can verify from a website, and it does not give anybody access to marking decisions, grade boundaries or unreleased paper content. IB Gram does not describe its tutors as examiners for that reason. If a provider leads on examiner experience, the fair question is what evidence of current status they can show, and the answer is informative either way.

Monthly figures are worth having as well, because an hour sounds cheaper than a term. The market shows online packages at around AED 799 a month for eight sessions and in-home packages at AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits, while Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Every figure in this section is somebody else's published number, cited so you can check it rather than take it on trust.

Booking a mathematics tutor from Arabian Ranches 3, and the honesty line

The sequence is short. Tell us the course, the level and the hour your child is genuinely free; we propose one tutor with the course they teach stated; the first lesson runs free with no card details taken, and it is spent on a real past paper rather than on introductions. You keep the marked script and the written notes whether you continue or not. If the match is wrong, saying so after the first lesson is the expected outcome and a different tutor is proposed rather than defended.

The honesty line on the exploration is worth writing out rather than implying, because pressure in DP2 is exactly where it gets crossed quietly. No tutor may write any part of the exploration, supply the topic as though it were the student's own, select the mathematics on the student's behalf, or edit a draft into a finished submission. A tutor may question until the student owns the topic, teach the technique the student chose, read the draft and name the criterion it falls short of, and teach the skill that gap exposes. One operator in this market sells completed internal assessments outright; for the student that is a malpractice finding rather than a shortcut.

Coverage is the limitation worth disclosing in advance. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level are reliably staffed on UAE evening hours. Higher Level in either course is available but books out earlier in the term, and exploration supervision takes longer to match because it is matched to the mathematics the student has chosen rather than to the course. If the match lands on an India-based tutor rather than a UAE-based one, you are told before you pay and the hour stays on Gulf Standard Time. Where nobody suitable is free, the answer is no with a reason.

On data: an enquiry collects the child's name, school, year group, course and level, because the matching does not work without them. We do not need a report card or a photograph to propose a tutor, a deletion request is honoured, and the privacy policy linked from this page states what is collected and why under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection.

Where we tutor

Arabian Ranches 3 phases, and what a mathematics session needs from the room

Mathematics is the subject where the physical setup actually matters, because the student has to write while being watched. These notes are about that: where the working can happen, and which slot survives the Dubailand school run from each phase.

Sun

Settled routines in the earlier phases make a standing slot easy to protect across a term. For mathematics a 17:00 start works well, because the working requires a student who is awake rather than one who has just walked through the door.

Joy

Shared study space is common here, and mathematics is the subject where a headset matters most: the tutor needs to hear a half-finished sentence about a method. A fixed slot with the door shut beats a flexible one in an open room.

Ruba

A ground-floor study in most layouts, which suits the graphic display calculator work that a Paper 2 or an Applications and Interpretation session involves. The device needs to be on the desk, charged, with the same model the school uses.

Spring

Later handovers, with several households still settling a campus. Mathematics requests from here often start as a single diagnostic on a marked IGCSE paper, to decide between the two Diploma routes before DP1 choices lock.

Bliss

Split school runs across the inner Dubailand and Al Barsha South campuses mean two different arrival times. For a DP2 student the later slot is the right one: non-calculator algebra at 16:30 after a long bus run produces errors that teach nothing.

Caya

Journeys run toward Dubai Hills and Al Barsha, so the afternoon peak lands differently. An 18:00 mathematics session is more productive here than a 17:00 one, and it holds up better during Ramadan when the useful hour moves later still.

June

Newer handovers where the desk may still be arriving. The requirement is small: a surface to write on, a charged calculator, a headset and a closing door. Everything the student writes happens on the shared board, so paper is optional.

Anya and Raya

The outer phases, where longer car journeys make weekend mornings attractive. For mathematics a Saturday morning is genuinely better than a weekday evening, because a full timed paper fits into it and a tired Tuesday does not.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Arabian Ranches 3

Diploma mathematics campuses used from Arabian Ranches 3

These are the schools whose DP mathematics teaching comes up in booking conversations from this community. Which campus a child attends decides when the Higher Level content lands in the scheme of work, which is the single most useful thing to know before planning a term.

  • Fairgreen International School, The Sustainable City
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Al Barsha South
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

British-route campuses where the mathematics decision starts earlier

Most children in this belt sit IGCSE mathematics first, and that paper is the best available evidence for the later AA or AI decision. Named as context for that decision; inspection outcomes should be read on the regulator's own site.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches
  • GEMS Metropole School, Motor City
  • Dubai British School Mira
  • South View School, Remraam
  • GEMS FirstPoint School, The Villa
  • The Aquila School, Dubailand

Schools are named as local context for a family choosing a campus or planning a course. IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school or group named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the course and the level with the school

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard Level. Those four words decide which tutors are candidates and which past papers matter. The school holds the answer on the child's record, and asking for it removes the most expensive mismatch available in Diploma mathematics.

  2. 02

Send a marked paper rather than a predicted grade

A script shows which of the six error classes is costing the marks. A predicted grade shows a teacher's estimate of an outcome. One of those can be planned against. If no marked paper exists, the free first lesson produces one, which is why the first session is a paper rather than a conversation.

  3. 03

One tutor proposed, with the course named

You receive a single match with the course and level they teach, their permit position, and whether they are UAE-based. If Higher Level coverage in your slot is thin, you are told at this stage rather than after a fortnight. No shortlist, because a shortlist hands the assessment back to the parent.

  4. 04

A free first lesson spent on a real paper

One session, the slot you asked for, no card details taken beforehand. The student works questions live on the shared board while the tutor watches the method appear. The output is a marked script and a written diagnosis naming the topics and the error classes, which you keep whether you continue or not.

  5. 05

Timed work from week four, and a review at the halfway point

Topic work first, then timed sections once two topics are secure, then mixed papers. At the halfway point the plan is checked against a mixed paper rather than a practised one. If the marks have not moved, the plan changes or the tutor does; if the work is done, the booking ends.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The match is to the course, not to the word maths

Analysis and Approaches with its non-calculator paper and Applications and Interpretation with its statistics load are different jobs. A tutor who has taught six cohorts of one may never have prepared anybody for the other. Confirming the course before the first lesson is the cheapest quality control available.

The working is visible, line by line

Mathematics is the subject where the error is in the method rather than the answer, and a shared whiteboard shows the method appearing in real time. A tutor who only ever sees a finished page is diagnosing from a photograph of the crime scene rather than watching it happen.

The exploration is named by criterion and mark

Presentation and mathematical communication at four marks each, personal engagement and reflection at three, use of mathematics at six. No competitor page researched for this market names a single criterion, which is a strange omission for a fifth of the grade.

The honesty line is printed, not implied

No tutor may write, draft or edit any part of the exploration, and the published table above says what is permitted at each stage. One operator in this market sells completed internal assessments; stating the boundary clearly is a genuine differentiator as well as the student's protection.

No date and no grade is invented

The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no IB session or results date appears here and your school's coordinator is the right source. Nor is any grade promised. What is claimed is specific: method shown, rounding discipline, calculator habits, timing and the exploration.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Arabian Ranches 3: your questions answered

Which maths course should my child take if they want engineering at a UAE university?+

Check the named university's own published requirement before DP1 choices lock, because this is a decision with a deadline. In general, competitive engineering, physics and mathematics programmes expect Analysis and Approaches, frequently at Higher Level, because the course carries the algebraic and calculus demand those degrees assume. Applications and Interpretation is accepted for many business, design and social science routes and is often insufficient for engineering. One session with a marked paper and the actual entry requirements in front of you costs far less than a route change in DP2.

Is Applications and Interpretation genuinely easier than Analysis and Approaches?+

It is different rather than easier, and students who choose it to avoid algebra are frequently surprised. The calculator is permitted on every paper, so producing a result is less of a hurdle, but the credit moves to interpretation: a correct regression line with no comment on what it means scores poorly. The statistical content is substantial, including hypothesis testing, and there is a great deal of written explanation. At Higher Level it adds graph theory and its own third paper. The trade is algebra for writing, not less work for the same grade.

Why does my son score well on Paper 2 and badly on Paper 1?+

If he sits Analysis and Approaches, because Paper 1 is taken without a calculator and Paper 2 is not. Two years of work with a device on the desk leaves a student with no fluency in exact values, surds and algebraic simplification, and those become examinable skills in their own right on that paper. The pattern is extremely common and entirely trainable: short non-calculator sets every session, with the device out of reach, over several weeks. The gap usually closes faster than families expect because nothing conceptual is missing.

How is the mathematical exploration marked, criterion by criterion?+

Out of twenty across five criteria. Presentation carries four marks and asks for a coherent, organised piece with a clear aim. Mathematical communication carries four and asks for correct notation and defined terms. Personal engagement carries three and asks for evidence of independent thinking. Reflection carries three and asks for critical evaluation of results and limitations. Use of mathematics carries six and asks for mathematics that is relevant, correct and sufficiently sophisticated for the level of the course. Your school's teacher holds the current published criteria in full.

What makes a strong exploration topic for a Diploma student in Dubai?+

One the student chose, that needs mathematics at the level of their course to answer, and that produces data or results they can reflect on critically. Personal engagement and reflection carry six of the twenty marks between them and neither can be supplied by anyone else. Local context often helps because the student can gather their own figures rather than reuse a textbook dataset. What fails is a topic selected because it looked safe: use of mathematics carries six marks and work pitched two years below the course cannot reach the top band.

Can a tutor look at my daughter's exploration draft without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may read the student's own draft and say where each criterion falls short and why, teach the technique the student has chosen to use, and question a topic until the student genuinely owns it. No tutor may write any part of it, supply the topic as though it were hers, choose the mathematics for her, or edit the draft toward a finished state. The school's teacher approves the proposal and gives the one permitted round of written feedback. The line protects her, because submitted work that is not her own is a malpractice finding.

What is Paper 3 and why does practising Papers 1 and 2 not prepare for it?+

Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level. It runs one hour, carries 20% of the grade, and is built from two extended problems that unfold in stages, each part depending on the one before. Papers 1 and 2 reward breadth and speed across many shorter questions, which is a different skill. Students who have never attempted a third paper under time characteristically lose marks in the second half of each question rather than evenly throughout. It needs its own timed practice, which is the specific reason the course and level matter when choosing a tutor.

My child understands the method but loses marks anyway. What is going wrong?+

Almost certainly one of a short list of mechanical habits. Method not shown, because the mark scheme awards marks for the working rather than the answer. Premature rounding, which propagates error through every later step. A calculator result trusted without an algebraic sanity check. Calculator notation copied onto the page. Questions abandoned halfway, when the later parts carry the heaviest marks. None of those is conceptual, all of them are visible on a marked script, and all respond to practice measured in weeks rather than terms.

Can a graphic display calculator really be taught over live video?+

Yes, and arguably better than in a room, provided the student has the same model the school uses. The tutor shares a screen showing the keystrokes while the student replicates them on their own device, and both the sequence and the mistake are visible to each other. What usually goes wrong with calculator teaching is not the medium but the assumption that a student who owns the device can use it: storing full precision, checking an entry, and reading output correctly are taught skills, not features of the hardware.

How long does it take to move an IB mathematics grade by a band?+

It depends entirely on which of the six error classes is responsible, which is why the first session is a marked paper. Mechanical losses, method not shown, premature rounding, calculator habits and timing, often move within six to eight weeks of weekly work because nothing has to be learned, only made automatic. A genuine content gap in a Higher Level topic takes longer, because the material has to be taught from the beginning. No honest tutor will quote a timescale before seeing a script, and nobody can promise a band.

Which of the five syllabus topics costs Dubai students the most marks?+

In our experience of booking conversations, geometry and trigonometry and calculus, for two different reasons. Trigonometric work loses marks to radians and degrees mixed inside a single question, which is the most common single error on the syllabus and the easiest to remove. Calculus loses marks to the chain and product rules applied without checking the inner function, which produces a clean-looking wrong answer. Higher Level topics lose marks for a third reason: they are taught late in the course and met first in a mock, which looks like weakness and is often recency.

Can we switch from Higher to Standard Level mathematics after DP1?+

Schools do allow it, within their own deadlines, and it is sometimes the right decision. What matters is the knock-on effect: the Diploma requires three subjects at Higher Level, so dropping one down means another must come up, and university requirements that specify Higher Level mathematics will no longer be met. The decision belongs to the school and should be taken with its DP coordinator rather than on a tutor's advice. A marked paper read by topic is useful evidence for the conversation, because it distinguishes a genuine ceiling from a recency effect.

Does an online mathematics lesson work when the student has to show working?+

It is the format's strongest case. The student writes on a shared whiteboard and the tutor watches each line appear, stopping at the moment the method goes wrong rather than at the moment the answer does. Those two moments are rarely the same line, which is exactly what a finished page on a desk conceals. The board is also saved, so the student has a record of the correct working in their own hand rather than a photograph of someone else's. For method-driven subjects that is a genuine advantage, not a compromise.

What does IB mathematics tuition cost around this part of Dubai, in dirhams?+

Published market figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200, and IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270. The budget band sits at AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, and in-home visits including travel at AED 180 to 500. Those are other providers' published numbers, cited so you can check them. Our own figure depends on course, level and whether the exploration is involved.

What if no Higher Level Analysis and Approaches tutor is free in our slot?+

You are told at the match stage rather than after waiting. Standard Level in both courses is reliably staffed on UAE evening hours; Higher Level is available but books out earlier in the term, and exploration supervision takes longest because it is matched to the mathematics the student has chosen rather than to the course. A tutor working from India rather than from the UAE is named as such before any payment, with the lesson held on Gulf Standard Time. Where nobody suitable is free, the answer is no with the reason given.

Send a marked paper and the course name

Two pieces of information turn a request for an IB maths tutor into a solvable problem: which of the four courses your child is sitting, and a marked paper from it. With those we can tell you whether the issue is a content gap in a late-taught Higher Level topic or one of the six mechanical habits that cost marks on every script, and those two answers have very different prices and timescales. Tell us the course, the level and the hour your child is free in Arabian Ranches 3. The first lesson is free, no card details are taken, and it is spent on a real paper with the marked script yours to keep.
