IB Home Tutor in Mirdif

Parents searching for an IB home tutor in Mirdif are usually two weeks past a disappointing report and want somebody who knows the actual papers. This page is written around the syllabus rather than the postcode: what each component is worth, which command terms the mark scheme rewards, and how past papers should be used. Lessons for Mirdif families run one-to-one over live video, Gulf Standard Time.

  • Lessons delivered over live video, not at a Mirdif address
  • Matched by subject and level, HL or SL, not by district
  • Work is done on your child's own past papers and mark schemes
  • Free first lesson; nothing is charged before you have seen one

IB & IGCSE in Mirdif

The syllabus is the thing, and it is the thing most local searches miss

A search for an IB home tutor in Mirdif is a search for proximity, but proximity is not what fixes a DP grade. What fixes a DP grade is somebody who knows that Mathematics HL Paper 3 is worth 20 per cent on its own, that the sciences now carry Paper 1 at 36 per cent and Paper 2 at 44 per cent with the internal assessment at 20, and that an English A Language and Literature HL candidate sits two papers plus an HL essay plus an individual oral. Those numbers decide where revision time goes. A tutor who does not know them will spend an hour on content your child has already met.

Mirdif sits in the eastern suburbs, ringed by Al Mizhar, Al Warqa, Al Khawaneej and Nad Al Hamar, with Dubai Festival City and Academic City within reach. The DP schools that families here use are spread across that arc rather than sitting inside Mirdif, so a tutor hired for being nearby is nearby to the villa and not to the school. More to the point, the DP is a six-subject programme and a struggling student is usually struggling in one or two specific components, not in a subject as a whole.

IB Gram delivers tuition to Mirdif as one-to-one lessons over live video. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to an address is a service offered only in India. The reason to prefer the online route here is not cost. It is that an HL Chemistry specialist who can mark a scientific investigation against the criteria does not have to live in Al Warqa for your child to work with them twice a week.

What this page does, then, is treat the search seriously on its own terms. The sections below set out what each DP component is worth, which command terms do the marking, the specific traps where Mirdif students lose marks in maths and the sciences, how past papers should be worked so they teach something, what the Dubai market charges for in-home and online tuition, and the line between coaching an internal assessment and writing it.

Scale is worth a sentence, because it explains the tutor market you are shopping in. Dubai had 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 offering seventeen curricula, and International Baccalaureate schools accounted for seven per cent of enrolment against thirty-seven per cent for UK-curriculum schools. A tutor advertising locally in the eastern suburbs is therefore far more likely to know GCSE and A Level than to know what an HL scientific investigation needs, and that is not a criticism of them so much as arithmetic.

Everything factual here is either from a named source or from the published subject structure, and the one thing deliberately absent is a date. The IB blocks automated checking of its own calendar, so no exam or results date appears on this page. UAE schools sit the May session; confirm every date with your child's IB coordinator rather than with a tutoring website, including ours.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mirdif families reach the Diploma Programme by several routes, and the route changes what tutoring is needed. The three programmes below are the ones requested from this part of Dubai.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Assessment is a mix of terminal written papers and internally assessed work, and the split differs by subject: 20 per cent internal in Maths and the sciences, 30 per cent in SL Economics, 30 per cent for the individual oral in SL English A Language and Literature.

Dubai DP candidates sit the May session. Mirdif students most often need help with two components rather than two subjects: a Paper 3 and an internal assessment, or a Paper 2 essay and the Extended Essay. Diagnosing that before booking hours is the difference between six useful lessons and sixteen vague ones.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP Years 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria lettered A to D and each marked out of 8. The programme rewards investigation, communication and reflection rather than terminal recall, which is why the step into DP assessment catches students who were comfortable all through MYP.

The continuum schools serving the eastern suburbs run MYP into DP in the same building. Students who make that move without a deliberate change in habit frequently drop a grade in DP1 term one, and the cause is the mark scheme rather than the content.

DP CoreAcross DP1 and DP2

Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS

The core carries up to three points on the final 45 and swallows more student time than its weighting suggests. The Extended Essay is capped at 4,000 words, the TOK essay at 1,600 and the TOK exhibition commentary at 950. All three are the student's own work, and a tutor's role is questioning, structure teaching and feedback.

Core support is the most common finite tutoring block booked from Mirdif, because it has a deadline rather than an exam. A dated series of lessons built backwards from the school's internal deadlines works; open-ended weekly lessons on an essay nobody has started do not.

IBCPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

DP courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. A smaller cohort in Dubai than the DP, and support requests usually concern the DP courses taken inside it rather than the career-related component.

Few eastern-suburbs schools offer it, so students on this route are often the only one in their year group needing help with a particular DP course. That is precisely the case where online matching beats a local search, because the local pool for one subject at one level may be empty.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Requests from Mirdif concentrate on the components with the highest marginal return: Paper 3 in HL maths and economics, Paper 2 in the sciences, and the internal assessments that sit at a fifth of the grade in most subjects.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

HL splits 30/30/20 across three papers with 20 per cent for the exploration; SL is 40/40/20. Paper 3 is the HL discriminator: two long, scaffolded investigations where students lose marks for abandoning part (b) rather than for not knowing the topic.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Same weightings as AA. Technology use is assumed throughout, and marks go missing when a student computes a correct answer on the calculator and writes none of the reasoning the mark scheme wants to see.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 at 36 per cent combines multiple choice with a data-based section; Paper 2 at 44 per cent carries the extended response; the scientific investigation is 20 per cent with a 3,000-word ceiling. Uncertainty treatment and graph gradients are where the data section is won or lost.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Same component structure as Physics. Organic mechanisms and equilibrium reasoning absorb the most tutoring time, and the single commonest Paper 2 loss is an explanation that states a trend without naming the cause the mark scheme requires.

Biology

HL and SL

Heavy on command-term precision: outline, explain, distinguish and evaluate all score differently for the same underlying knowledge. Students who revise content and not command terms plateau in the 4 to 5 range regardless of effort.

Economics

HL and SL

HL weights Paper 1 at 20 per cent, Paper 2 at 30, Paper 3 at 30 and the portfolio of three commentaries at 20; SL is 30/40/30 with no Paper 3. HL Paper 3 is quantitative and is where unprepared HL candidates lose most.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

SL sits Paper 1 at 35 per cent, Paper 2 at 35 and the individual oral at 30. HL adds the HL essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words. Paper 1 unseen analysis improves fastest with weekly timed practice on unfamiliar text types.

English B

HL and SL

Productive and receptive skills assessed separately, with text-type conventions carrying marks of their own. Students writing excellent prose in the wrong register for the task lose marks they never see explained.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with tool application assessed as a skill. The usual failure is describing a tool rather than applying it to the stimulus, which caps the response regardless of how accurate the description is.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A thin tutor pool in Dubai at HL, which makes it the clearest example of why matching by subject beats matching by district. Pseudocode discipline and the solution development documentation carry more marks than students expect.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all over live video, chosen by what the diagnosis says rather than by preference. Most Mirdif requests resolve to one of the first two.

Weekly one-to-one on one component

A single sixty-minute lesson a week aimed at one named component: HL Maths Paper 3, Chemistry Paper 2 extended response, English Paper 1 unseen analysis. Narrow by design, because a broad brief produces broad lessons and no measurable change.

  • Same tutor and slot each week
  • Past-paper questions chosen in advance
  • Mark scheme read aloud against the student's answer
  • Written note naming the component and the next target

Two subjects, two specialists

Separate tutors for separate subjects on separate evenings, which is the honest answer when a DP report shows HL Physics and HL Maths both sliding. One tutor covering both at HL is rare, and pretending otherwise costs a term.

  • Two 60-minute lessons weekly
  • Specialists matched per subject and level
  • Shared written log so revision does not double up
  • Reviewed after the next school assessment

Dated internal assessment or core block

A finite, dated series tied to one deadline: a scientific investigation, a maths exploration, the Extended Essay or the TOK essay. The block ends when the deadline passes, and it is coaching and feedback on the student's own work throughout.

  • Built backwards from the school's internal deadline
  • Criteria read with the student, not summarised at them
  • Questioning and structure teaching only
  • No drafting, no rewriting, no renewal

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mirdif

01

What an IB home tutor in Mirdif can and cannot be arranged

An IB home tutor in Mirdif, in the sense of a qualified DP teacher who drives to a villa off Algeria Street, exists in this market. Independent tutors advertise in-home work across the eastern suburbs, and quoted rates for in-home one-to-one in Dubai run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The premium is real and so is the service. It is simply not the service IB Gram sells.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Sending a tutor to a family's address is something the business does only in India, and stating that plainly is more useful than hedging. For Mirdif the delivery is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, with a screen shared both ways so the student writes and the tutor annotates.

The case for that is specific to the DP rather than general. A DP student needing HL Computer Science, HL Economics Paper 3 or Chemistry scientific investigation feedback is looking for one person in a small pool. Restricting that pool to tutors who will drive to Mirdif on a Tuesday at 16:30 removes most of it. Restricting it to nobody at all, which is what matching on subject and level does, leaves the pool intact.

The practical test of all this is the trial lesson, which costs nothing. Give the tutor a past-paper question your child got wrong and ask them to work it through against the published mark scheme. A specialist does that immediately and names the marks. Anyone else explains the topic. You will know inside fifteen minutes, and that is a far better test than a biography.

02

What each DP component is actually worth

Revision time should follow weighting, and most students allocate it by comfort instead. The table below sets out the published component structure for the subjects Mirdif families request most often. Read it next to your child's current marks and the misallocation is usually obvious within a minute: hours spent on Paper 1 recall in a subject where Paper 2 carries 44 per cent of the grade.

Two patterns are worth pulling out. First, the internal assessment is 20 per cent in Maths and in all three sciences. That is a fifth of the grade awarded for work done at a desk over weeks, with the criteria published in advance and no time pressure. It is the most recoverable fifth of any DP grade and the one students most often leave until it cannot be recovered.

Second, Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra content. In Mathematics, HL sits three papers at 30, 30 and 20 while SL sits two at 40 and 40, so the HL candidate has a whole additional assessment style to prepare. In Economics, HL Paper 3 carries 30 per cent and is quantitative in a way the SL course never asks for. A student moving from SL to HL in DP1 needs preparing for the format, not just the syllabus.

Weightings are published in each subject guide and are revised when a syllabus changes. Confirm the figures below against your child's own guide or their subject teacher before building a revision plan on them, and be sceptical of any tutoring site, this one included, that offers numbers without telling you to check.

Command terms are the mark scheme in disguise

  • List the command term of every question that lost marks on the last paper
  • Practise six questions sharing one command term, not six on one topic
  • In maths, hence means use the previous part - a different method loses method marks
  • Outline is penalised for length; evaluate is penalised for one-sidedness

The single most teachable thing in the DP is the difference between outline, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, justify and discuss. Each has a defined expectation, and a question's marks are allocated against the term it uses. A student who writes a beautiful explanation in response to evaluate has answered a question nobody asked, and the mark scheme has no route to award the marks.

This is where plateaus come from. A Mirdif student revising Biology content for six weeks and staying at a 5 is usually not short of knowledge. They are answering every question the same way: recall, in sentences, at length. Explain wants a causal chain. Evaluate wants both sides and a judgement. Distinguish wants a stated point of contrast, not two separate descriptions. Outline wants brevity and gets penalised for padding by spending time the student needed elsewhere.

The fix is mechanical and fast. Take a marked paper, list the command term of every question that lost marks, and the pattern appears in one sitting. Then practise six questions using the same command term in a row rather than six questions on the same topic. Students find this dull and their marks move anyway, usually within three weeks, which is the shortest route to a visible change in any DP subject.

Mathematics has its own version: show that, hence, hence or otherwise, deduce, prove. Hence means the previous result must be used, and a correct answer reached another way loses method marks. Students lose these marks repeatedly and never learn why, because the lost mark looks like an arithmetic slip on the script.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT THE MARK SCHEME AWARDS
Command termWhat the scheme is looking forThe commonest wrong answerTypical fix in lessons
OutlineA brief summary, no developmentThree paragraphs where two lines earn full marksTimed one-sentence answers until brevity is habitual
ExplainA causal chain, cause named and linked to effectThe trend and the result, with the mechanism missingHighlight the missing clause on five marked answers
EvaluateBoth sides weighed, then a stated judgementOne side argued well, no judgement offeredForce a final sentence beginning "on balance"
DistinguishA stated point of contrast between two thingsTwo separate descriptions side by sideRewrite as a single sentence using "whereas"
Hence (maths)Use of the immediately preceding resultA correct answer by a different methodMark the student's own script for lost method marks
Show that (maths)Working towards a given result, every step visibleThe given answer restated with no derivationPractise six parts where the answer is supplied
04

The specific traps: maths, the sciences and the internal assessments

Mathematics HL Paper 3 is two long investigations, heavily scaffolded. The marks are distributed across the parts, which means a student who reads part (a), panics at part (c) and abandons the question loses the parts they could have done. The teachable habit is to attempt every part in order and to write the reasoning even where the final value is wrong, because method marks survive an arithmetic error and a blank does not.

In the sciences, Paper 1 now carries a data-based section as well as multiple choice, and that section is where uncertainty, gradient and intercept work is tested. Students who have never drawn a line of best fit by hand under time pressure lose marks that no amount of content revision recovers. Paper 2 extended response is lost to incomplete causal chains: the answer names the trend, names the result, and omits the mechanism in between, which is exactly the clause the mark scheme awards.

The internal assessments have their own failure modes. The maths exploration, recommended at 12 to 20 pages, fails on a topic too large to do personally rather than on mathematics; the strongest explorations are narrow. The scientific investigation, capped at 3,000 words, fails on a research question that cannot be answered with the data collected, and that fault is set in week one and cannot be repaired in week ten. Choosing the question properly is the highest-value hour of the whole process.

In English A, Paper 1 unseen analysis is the component that moves fastest with practice, because the skill being tested is responding to unfamiliar text types under time pressure. Weekly timed work on text types the student has not met is worth more than a term of studying texts they have.

05

Using past papers so they actually teach something

Most students use past papers as a mood check. They sit one, score it, feel either reassured or miserable, and sit another. That produces a graph of how they already perform and teaches almost nothing. Past papers teach when they are worked rather than sat.

The method that works is narrow and slightly tedious. Sit the paper under time. Mark it against the official mark scheme without mercy, awarding only what the scheme awards. Then separate the losses into three bins: did not know the content, knew it and answered the wrong command term, knew it and ran out of time. Those three have different remedies, and lumping them together is why revision plans fail. Content gaps need teaching. Command-term errors need the drill described above. Timing failures need a question-order strategy, not more knowledge.

A tutor earns their hour in the marking and the sorting, not in the sitting. A good lesson takes one marked paper and spends fifty minutes on the five questions where marks were lost for a reason the student cannot yet name. That is unglamorous, it is specific, and it is what changes a grade boundary.

On sourcing: official papers, mark schemes and subject guides belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson, and IB Gram neither reproduces nor supplies them. Your child's school holds the licensed access, and the subject teacher is the correct route. A tutor works from material the student already legitimately has.

06

What a home tutor costs in Mirdif, and what the travel premium pays for

Cheapest first, because that is the order a family actually shops in. The budget end of Dubai tutoring, typically university students, runs AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An IB or IGCSE specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table at AED 200 to 450 or more. Premium named or examiner-level tutors reach AED 500 to 650 and beyond, with BartyED at AED 650.

In-home one-to-one, travel included, is quoted at AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. Set that against the online qualified band of AED 150 to 300 and the travel premium is visible. Monthly packaging shows it more plainly still: AED 799 a month advertised for eight online sessions, against AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits.

What the premium buys in Mirdif specifically is an adult in the room and a journey nobody has to think about. What it costs is choice. A tutor driving out to the eastern suburbs for 16:30 blocks out the whole afternoon, so their rate has to carry that, and the list of people willing to do it is short. For HL Maths the short list is usable. For HL Computer Science or HL Economics Paper 3 it frequently has nobody on it.

IB Gram does not publish a rate card here. The figures above are other providers' published numbers, named so you can verify them yourself, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Our own quote follows the free trial lesson, because it depends on subject, level and whether one component or three needs work.

07

The internal assessment boundary: what a tutor may touch

A fifth of a DP grade in most subjects is coursework the student must produce themselves, and this is where tutoring either earns its fee or destroys a candidacy. The IB's academic honesty rules make the exploration, the scientific investigation, the Extended Essay and the TOK essay the student's own work. A tutor who drafts any part of it creates a malpractice exposure for the student, and the consequence lands on the child, not the tutor.

The legitimate work is still substantial. A tutor may read the assessment criteria with the student rather than at them. They may interrogate a research question until it is answerable with the data available. They may teach referencing, structure and the conventions of a reflective paragraph. They may read a section the student has written and identify which criterion strand it does not yet meet and why. They may enforce a weekly schedule on a project that has no weekly pressure of its own.

What a tutor may not do is supply the question, supply the content, write, rewrite to completion, or edit the student's prose into their own voice. The working test is whether the student could explain, unprompted, why each paragraph is there. If they cannot, something has gone wrong regardless of who typed it. One ranking site in this market sells completed internal assessments outright; that is an integrity breach and an expulsion risk for the student, and declining to do it is not modesty, it is the only defensible position.

The same boundary covers the Extended Essay at 4,000 words, the TOK essay at 1,600 and the TOK exhibition commentary at 950. Coaching the process and giving feedback on the student's own text is the whole service, and families in Mirdif are told this before any money changes hands rather than after.

08

Timing a Mirdif session, and when to start

Secondary year groups in the eastern suburbs finish around 15:00 and reach Mirdif villas between roughly 15:30 and 16:45, depending on whether the route runs inside the community or comes back across Nad Al Hamar from Festival City. For most DP students that makes 17:30 the first reliable slot and 19:00 the most popular one, because DP1 and DP2 students also have school co-curriculars and are frequently not free at 16:30 on any day.

Start dates matter more than most families expect. A DP1 student who begins in October has time to change habits before anything is assessed externally. A DP2 student beginning after the first mock has roughly two terms, which is enough to fix component technique and an internal assessment but not enough to learn two years of HL content. Both are worth doing; they are different projects, and a tutor who does not say so is overselling.

Ramadan reshapes the week while it falls, and evening schedules shift accordingly. Post-iftar sessions are workable for DP students and are frequently more productive than a late-afternoon slot during fasting hours. Because lessons are over video, moving a slot by two hours for a month costs nothing and needs no renegotiation of anybody's drive.

The practical sequence is short. Tell us the subject, the level, the component that is weakest, and what time your child is genuinely free. Send one marked past paper or one returned internal assessment draft. Take the free trial lesson and judge it on whether the tutor could work your child's wrong answer against the mark scheme. Then fix a slot for the term, because consistency is worth more in this programme than intensity.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Mirdif

Mirdif shares its school arc and its traffic with the surrounding eastern suburbs, so the scheduling and availability notes below apply across the cluster rather than to Mirdif alone.

Al Mizhar

Directly north-east of Mirdif across Al Khawaneej Road. Shares most of the same school routes, so session timing is effectively identical and sibling slots can be arranged on one evening.

Al Warqa

South of Mirdif, denser and closer to the Dubai-Al Ain Road. Students here often attend Indian-curriculum schools alongside DP schools, so mixed-board households are common.

Al Khawaneej

Further out, with longer bus runs and later arrivals. Families here book 18:00 and 19:00 slots more often than Mirdif families do.

Nad Al Hamar

On the Festival City side, which shortens the run to the DP schools there and makes earlier starts workable for secondary students.

Dubai Festival City

Where two of the DP schools the eastern suburbs use actually sit. Children living here are home earliest in the cluster.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Apartment-heavy and close to Academic City. Convenient for the schools there, and a common origin for DP students needing HL science support.

Dubai International Academic City

University district rather than residential, but the reason several eastern-suburbs schools cluster nearby and a factor in afternoon traffic on the Academic City road.

Al Rashidiya

Between Mirdif and the airport, on the metro line. Shorter commutes, and the one part of this cluster where a 16:00 secondary slot is sometimes realistic.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not the subject

"HL Chemistry" is a brief nobody can act on. "Paper 2 extended response, losing the mechanism clause" is. If you do not know which component is weak, send the last marked paper and we will identify it before matching anybody.

  2. 02

    Send one marked script

A past paper with the examiner's or teacher's marks on it tells us more in two minutes than a phone call does in twenty. It shows whether the losses are content, command term or timing, and those three need different tutors and different plans.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson over video

One lesson with the matched specialist, at no charge. Ask them to work your child's wrong answer against the official mark scheme and name where the marks sit. If they explain the topic instead, that is your answer and you are free to walk away.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and the target

Same tutor, same weekly time, held for the term, with one named component as the target. You get a short written note after each lesson saying what was worked and what the next target is, which is checkable against the next school assessment.

  5. 05

    Review against real marks

At six weeks the question is whether the named component moved on a real piece of marked work. If it has not, the plan changes or the tutor does. We raise that ourselves rather than waiting to be asked, because a comfortable arrangement that is not working is the worst outcome for everyone.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on level, not just subject

HL and SL are different assessments, not different amounts of the same one. HL Maths sits three papers at 30, 30 and 20; SL sits two at 40 and 40. Matching ignores that at your child's cost, so ours does not.

Work happens on real scripts

Lessons run on your child's own marked papers and the published mark schemes their school holds. We do not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson material, and a tutor working from your child's actual losses needs none.

The pool is not limited to who will drive

A specialist in HL Computer Science or HL Economics Paper 3 does not have to live in the eastern suburbs for your child to work with them. Online delivery keeps that pool whole, which matters most in exactly the subjects where it is smallest.

Component-level written notes

After each lesson you get the component worked, the specific loss addressed and the next target, in writing. That is a claim you can check against the next marked paper rather than an impression of how the hour felt.

Dates come from your coordinator

No IB exam or results date appears on this page, because the IB blocks automated verification and a wrong date is worse than no date. UAE schools sit the May session; your child's IB coordinator is the source for everything more specific.

The coursework line is stated upfront

We coach, question and give feedback on internal assessments. We do not write, rewrite or supply them. That is said before payment, because the consequence of getting it wrong falls on your child rather than on us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mirdif: your questions answered

Will an IB tutor come to our house in Mirdif?+

No. IB Gram runs home visits only in India, and tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video. In-home tutors do work in the eastern suburbs independently, and the market rate for in-home one-to-one in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel. If an adult in the room is what your child needs, that option exists elsewhere. What online delivery gives you instead is a specialist matched on subject and level rather than on willingness to drive to Mirdif at 16:30.

How much of my child's DP grade is the internal assessment?+

In Mathematics and in Physics, Chemistry and Biology it is 20 per cent. In SL Economics the portfolio is 30 per cent; in SL English A Language and Literature the individual oral is 30 per cent. That is a fifth to nearly a third of the grade, awarded for work done over weeks with the criteria published in advance and no exam pressure. It is the most recoverable part of any DP grade and the part most often left too late to recover. Confirm the exact figure in your child's subject guide.

What makes HL Mathematics Paper 3 so different from Papers 1 and 2?+

It is two long, heavily scaffolded investigations rather than a set of discrete questions, and it carries 20 per cent of the HL grade. Marks are spread across the parts, so the damaging habit is reading part (a), losing confidence at part (c) and abandoning the whole question. Attempting every part in order, and writing the reasoning even when the final value comes out wrong, preserves method marks that a blank cannot. It is a technique problem far more often than a content problem, which is why it responds quickly to targeted work.

Which schools in and around Mirdif offer the Diploma Programme?+

The eastern suburbs are served by an IB continuum school inside Mirdif itself and by several in the wider arc, with two IB schools in Dubai Festival City and British-curriculum schools out towards Academic City. Families here commonly use Uptown International School, Star International School Mirdif, Deira International School, Universal American School and Dubai English Speaking College among others. We name them as scheduling context only; IB Gram has no affiliation with, or endorsement from, any school mentioned on this page.

Why do command terms matter more than content for a plateaued student?+

Because marks are allocated against the term the question uses. Explain wants a causal chain; evaluate wants two sides and a judgement; distinguish wants a stated contrast rather than two descriptions; outline is penalised for padding. A student answering every question with recall at length will sit at a 4 or 5 whatever they revise. The fastest diagnostic is to list the command term of every question that lost marks on the last paper. The pattern usually appears in a single sitting, and three weeks of drilling one term moves it.

Is it too late to start tutoring in DP2?+

It depends what you are trying to fix, and an honest tutor will say which. Two terms is enough to change component technique, rebuild command-term discipline and get an internal assessment to a decent standard. It is not enough to learn two years of HL content that was never learned. Both situations are worth working on, but they are different projects with different realistic outcomes, and anyone promising the second in that time is selling rather than teaching. Send the mock script and we will tell you which one you have.

Can a tutor help with the maths exploration without writing it?+

Yes, and the most valuable hour is the first one. The exploration, recommended at 12 to 20 pages, usually fails on topic choice rather than on mathematics: the subject is too broad to engage with personally. A tutor can interrogate the question until it is narrow and answerable, teach the criteria, and read what the student has written and say which criterion strand it does not yet meet. A tutor cannot supply the topic, the content or the sentences. Your child must be able to explain every page unprompted.

How should my child use past papers between now and the exams?+

Work them, do not just sit them. Sit under time, mark strictly against the official mark scheme, then sort every lost mark into three bins: content not known, wrong command term answered, ran out of time. Each has a different remedy, and mixing them is why revision plans stall. Content needs teaching, command terms need drilling, timing needs a question-order strategy. The school holds licensed access to papers and mark schemes; IB Gram does not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson material.

What time can lessons start for a Mirdif student?+

Secondary year groups reach Mirdif villas roughly between 15:30 and 16:45 depending on route, so 17:30 is the first reliably workable slot and 19:00 is the most requested. Children living in Al Khawaneej and the outer eastern areas arrive later and tend to book 18:00 or 19:00. Because lessons run over video there is no travel block on either side, so the booked minute is the start minute, and shifting a slot during Ramadan to a post-iftar time costs nothing to arrange.

Do you cover both HL and SL in the sciences?+

Yes, and we match differently for each. The component structure is shared, with Paper 1 at 36 per cent, Paper 2 at 44 and the scientific investigation at 20, but the depth and the extended-response expectations differ considerably. A tutor comfortable with SL Paper 2 is not automatically comfortable with HL. We ask which level before matching and we will say so if the specialist your child needs is not immediately free rather than filling the slot with whoever is.

What is the word limit on the Extended Essay and the TOK essay?+

The Extended Essay is capped at 4,000 words, the TOK essay at 1,600, and the TOK exhibition commentary at 950. Those ceilings are part of the assessment, and work that overruns is penalised, so planning the structure against the limit from the start matters more than editing down at the end. A tutor may teach structure, question the argument and give feedback on the student's own draft. Writing or rewriting any of it would be malpractice under the IB's academic honesty rules.

Are some HL subjects hard to staff for a family out in the eastern suburbs?+

At Higher Level, Computer Science, Economics Paper 3 and some Group 1 and Group 2 language combinations have the thinnest pools. That is the clearest practical argument for online matching: restricting the search to tutors willing to drive to the eastern suburbs on a weekday afternoon often leaves nobody on the list for those subjects. If no specialist is available for your child's exact subject and level, we say so rather than substituting a generalist, and we would rather lose the booking than fill it badly.

Does Dubai regulate private tutors, and what should I ask one?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Ask any independent tutor directly whether they hold one, and note that ADEK's ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi school staff from paid tutoring of their own students.

After six weeks of lessons, what should have changed on paper?+

By whether the named component moved on a real marked piece of work. Not by how the lessons felt, and not by a score on an internal test we set ourselves. At the outset one component is named as the target, the written note after each lesson records what was worked, and at six weeks that target is checked against the next school assessment. If it has not shifted, the plan changes or the tutor does, and we raise it first. No grade is promised anywhere on this page, because no tutor can honestly promise one.

Can one tutor cover two of my child's six DP subjects?+

Sometimes, and usually not at Higher Level. A tutor genuinely strong in HL Mathematics and HL Physics exists but is uncommon, and accepting a weaker second subject to keep one tutor costs a term you cannot get back. The honest arrangement for two sliding subjects is two specialists on two evenings, with a shared written log so revision does not double up. Because no travel is involved, consecutive slots on one evening are straightforward, and so are two siblings at two different levels.

Send the marked paper first

If you are searching for an IB home tutor in Mirdif, the fastest route to a useful lesson is not a phone call about availability. Send one marked past paper or one returned internal assessment draft, name the subject and the level, and say what time your child is genuinely free after the bus gets in. We will identify whether the losses are content, command term or timing, match a specialist on subject and level, and run the first lesson over live video at no charge. Judge it on whether the tutor can work a wrong answer against the mark scheme. No tutor visits a UAE address, no coursework is written, and no grade is promised.
