IB Exam Preparation in Dubai

IB exam preparation in Dubai is priced by the hour but bought by the block: a DP2 student fourteen weeks from the May session needs a different number of hours from a DP1 student sitting January mocks. This page sets out what the Dubai market charges in AED, the six things that move that figure in this emirate, and how many hours one HL subject realistically absorbs. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, after a trial lesson.

  • Every AED band on this page is attributed to the source that published it
  • One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, not a recorded course
  • Sessions work on the student's own papers, drafts and school deadlines
  • Dubai schools sit under KHDA; private tutors need a MoHRE permit

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Price the job, not the hour

Most Dubai parents start the search for IB exam preparation by asking what an hour costs. It is the wrong first question, and it is the reason two families with identical children end up paying very different totals. An hour of Diploma tutoring in Dubai trades in a band roughly AED 150 to AED 450 depending on format and specialism, which is wide but knowable. What is not knowable from a rate card is the number of hours. That number is set by how many weeks are left, how many subjects are in trouble, whether the problem is content or technique, and whether the student will do work between sessions. Multiply a mid-band rate by the wrong number of weeks and the budget is wrong by a factor of three.

So this page does the multiplication in public. It publishes the AED bands the Dubai market actually charges, with each figure attributed to whoever published it. It then lists what moves the number inside this emirate: the subject, the level, how late you start, how many papers are involved, whether coursework supervision is in scope, and whether a UAE-based specialist exists for the combination you need. Each of those is worth hundreds of dirhams a month, and each is something you can decide before you spend anything.

The second thing to settle is format, because format is the single biggest line in the sum. A tutor in the room carries a travel premium in Dubai: the market pays roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour for a tutor in the room, against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai. Home visits are a service we run only in India, and every page on this site for a UAE city says so. Diploma tuition for Dubai families is delivered one-to-one over live video, which removes the travel line from the invoice and, more usefully at exam time, removes the twenty-minute radius from the tutor search.

That matters more than it sounds. The scarce thing in Dubai is not a maths tutor; it is a Chemistry HL tutor who has marked the current criteria, is free at 5pm on a Tuesday, and has done Paper 3 question sets with students sitting the same session. A family restricted to the drive from Al Barsha to Mirdif is choosing from a handful of people. A family on live video is choosing from the people who actually teach the subject, and is paying for teaching rather than for the Sheikh Zayed Road at six o'clock.

The rest of the page is ordered the way the money is spent. Rates by format, then the six variables that move them, then hours per subject by scenario, then the session calendar counted backwards so you can see which weeks you are buying. After that: where marks go missing in the last six weeks, what mock results are and are not evidence of, how Ramadan reshapes a revision timetable in this city, the hard boundaries on what a tutor may touch in coursework, the equivalency paperwork a UAE university will ask for afterwards, and what we say when no specialist is free. Start with the trial lesson, which is one 45-minute session per student with no card details taken.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Exam preparation means something different in each IB programme, because each programme assesses differently. The Diploma has externally marked papers in a fixed session; the Middle Years Programme is largely internal; the Primary Years Programme has no examinations at all. Dubai runs all four, so it is worth being precise about which one your child is in.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. The grade on the certificate comes from externally marked papers sat in a single session plus internally assessed coursework moderated by the IB. Exam preparation here means papers: command terms, mark allocations, timing per question, and the specific paper a student is weakest in rather than the subject as a whole.

Dubai Diploma candidates sit the May session almost without exception, which puts the hard work in the Gregorian second and third terms. Schools run internal mocks in January, release predicted grades to universities shortly after, and set internal coursework deadlines months ahead of the IB's own. A Dubai DP2 revision plan is therefore built around the school's mock week and the school's coursework calendar, not around a generic countdown.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of eight and reported on a 1-7 scale. There is no public examination unless the school opts into MYP eProjects or on-screen examinations. Preparation at this stage means criterion literacy: knowing what Criterion C asks for in Sciences, what a command term expects, and how to read a rubric rather than guess at it.

Many Dubai families meet the Diploma for the first time through an MYP report that uses words they have never seen. A child at 5 out of 8 across four criteria is in a very different position from one at 7, 7, 4, 3, and the second pattern is the one that needs work. In Dubai the practical question is usually whether to continue into DP at the same school or move to a British-curriculum school for IGCSE and A Level, and the MYP criterion profile is the best evidence you have for that decision.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more DP courses taken alongside a career-related study, a reflective project, a service-learning component, language development and a personal and professional skills course. Students sit real DP papers in their chosen subjects, so the examination technique work is identical to a Diploma candidate's, but the load is lighter and the timetable is more forgiving.

The Career-related Programme is thinly offered in Dubai compared with the full Diploma, so a CP student often finds that their school has one teacher covering the DP courses and no subject department behind them. That is the case where outside subject support changes the most, and where the per-hour cost is easiest to justify: the student is sitting the same externally marked paper as a full Diploma candidate with a fraction of the teaching time behind them.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

An inquiry framework with no external examinations, assessed through the exhibition in the final year and through teacher judgement against learning outcomes. Nothing here is examination preparation. Support at this stage is about the mechanics that later papers assume: number fluency, reading stamina, writing at length without losing a thread, and the habit of showing a method.

A PYP child in Dubai will also be taking Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies under KHDA's mandatory-subject requirement, in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. Those subjects follow Ministry of Education content and cannot be varied by the school. Families who leave Arabic alone in primary years tend to meet it again as a real problem in Year 7, so it belongs in the plan well before any examination does.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Price varies by subject in Dubai because supply does. Maths and the sciences at Higher Level, Economics, and the coursework-heavy Group 1 and Group 3 options sit at the top of the band; Standard Level languages and Business Management sit lower. These are the combinations Dubai families ask for most at exam time, with the part of each that actually loses marks.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route most Dubai schools push for engineering and economics applicants. HL adds proof, complex numbers and a third paper that is unseen in style and ruthless about method marks. Marks go missing in the transition from a correct idea to a written argument: no working, no units, no conclusion sentence, calculator used where an exact answer was required.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology-heavy problems, with a graphical calculator assumed throughout. Students lose marks by not reading the context, quoting raw regression output without interpreting it, and leaving the calculator's unrounded answers in a final line. HL adds matrices, graph theory and a significant statistics load that rewards drilling.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 is multiple choice plus data analysis, Paper 2 is extended response, and HL carries extra content in fields, induction and quantum. The typical Dubai candidate knows the physics and loses marks on the write-up: missing uncertainties, graph axes without units, a derivation stated rather than shown, and explanation answers that describe instead of explain.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms, energetics and equilibrium account for most of the lost marks in the Dubai cohort. HL adds depth across the board and a longer data-based paper. Technique work pays here more than content work: balanced equations with state symbols, significant figures carried correctly, and reasoning that names the intermolecular force rather than gesturing at polarity.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume is the problem, not difficulty. Students who revise by rereading notes stall in the low fives. The marks are in command-term discipline, which asks for different things under outline, explain, suggest and evaluate, and in the data questions where candidates describe a trend and forget to reference the figures that prove it.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams are the grade. A correctly labelled and correctly shifted diagram earns marks that no amount of prose recovers, and HL Paper 3 is a quantitative paper that rewards practice with calculation rather than theory. Dubai students tend to be strong on real-world examples and weak on evaluating one against a stated criterion.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is guided textual analysis of an unseen non-literary text, Paper 2 a comparative essay on studied works, and HL adds the HL Essay. Marks are lost in Criterion A analysis that paraphrases rather than reads, and in Paper 2 answers that summarise two books instead of arguing one line through both.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with a pre-released case for Paper 1 and seen tools applied to unseen scenarios in Paper 2. HL adds Paper 3 on a social-enterprise prompt. The common failure is a student who knows every tool and applies none of them to the actual company in the stimulus, which is where the application and evaluation marks sit.

Psychology

HL and SL

A heavy studies load with precise expectations about how a study is used as evidence. Marks are lost in essays that narrate a study rather than deploying it, and in HL extensions where the question asks for research methods and gets content instead. Essay planning under timed conditions is the highest-value intervention.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

Arabic A, Arabic B and the KHDA-mandated stream

Dubai private schools must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the licensed curriculum, in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. For an Arabic A or Arabic B Diploma candidate the examination technique is the usual IB discipline; for the mandatory stream the content is set by the Ministry of Education and may not be altered by the school.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways Dubai families buy exam preparation, each with a different cost profile. The first two are the common ones; the third is the cheapest useful thing you can buy late; the fourth is the only way to bring the per-student rate down without losing the one-to-one feedback loop entirely.

Weekly one-to-one through the exam year

One 60 or 90-minute session a week in the same slot, from the start of DP2 to the session. The cheapest route per unit of grade movement because the tutor sees the whole arc: coursework drafts, mock results, the collapse in week six and the recovery in week nine. Billed by the session.

  • Same slot every week on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set between sessions and marked at the next one
  • The tutor holds the student's own mark profile across the year
  • Easiest format to pause for a school trip or family travel

Intensive revision block before the session

Two or three sessions a week for six to ten weeks, usually one subject or two. This is what most Dubai families actually buy, and it is the format where the hours table further down matters most, because a block bought at the wrong length is the commonest way to overspend on exam preparation.

  • Six to ten weeks, two or three sessions weekly
  • Paper-by-paper coverage rather than topic-by-topic
  • Timed questions set between sessions and marked
  • Fixed in advance so the slot survives the mock period

Marking clinic on the student's own papers

The student sits a past paper to time at home, sends the script, and the session is spent on the script rather than on new teaching. The lowest-cost format per mark gained in the last month before a session, because it attacks technique, which is where a prepared student's missing marks actually are.

  • One paper per session, marked against the published criteria
  • Annotated script returned on the shared screen and saved
  • A running list of the student's own repeat errors
  • Works for Maths, the sciences and Economics Paper 3

Pair or trio from the same subject class

Two or three students from the same school and the same subject, sharing a slot and splitting the rate. The market pays roughly AED 90 to AED 200 per student per hour for small groups. It works when the students are at a similar mark and fails when one needs content while another needs technique.

  • Per-student rate falls, total tutor rate does not
  • Only sensible within one subject and one level
  • Needs similar starting marks to be fair to both
  • Not suitable for coursework supervision

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What you are actually buying when you search for IB exam preparation in Dubai

  • Content gaps: months of work, realistic target is one grade
  • Technique gaps: weeks of work, realistic target is more
  • Diagnose with one marked past paper before buying any block
  • Nothing a tutor does may replace the student's own coursework

IB exam preparation in Dubai is one-to-one teaching aimed at a specific externally marked paper, bought in hours, at a market rate of roughly AED 150 to AED 450 an hour as of October 2026. The thing being bought is not more teaching of the syllabus. A Diploma student in Dubai has already had two years of the syllabus from a subject teacher in a KHDA-inspected school. What they usually have not had is sustained one-to-one feedback on their own written answers against the published assessment criteria, because a class of twenty-two does not permit it.

That distinction is what determines the bill. Content teaching is slow and expensive: covering unlearned HL Chemistry content takes months, and no number of weeks at two sessions a week closes a two-year gap. Technique work is fast and cheap: a student who knows the chemistry but writes answers that earn five of eight marks can move several grade boundaries in a few weeks of marked papers. Before you price anything, work out which of the two you are buying, because they differ by a factor of five in hours.

The honest diagnostic is a marked paper. Have the student sit one full past paper to time, send the script, and have a subject specialist mark it to the criteria and report where the marks went. If the script shows scattered method errors and missing conclusions, you are buying technique and the block is short. If it shows whole topics absent, you are buying content and the realistic target is a grade, not three. We run that diagnostic inside the trial lesson, which is one 45-minute session per student with no card details taken, specifically so the quote that follows is based on evidence rather than on a parent's description of the problem.

One more thing this search is not. It is not a request for someone to produce assessed work. Everything in a Diploma that carries the student's name must be the student's own: the Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay. A tutor teaches, questions, and gives feedback on what the student has already put down. The section on academic honesty below sets out exactly where that line sits, because two of the pages competing for this search in Dubai sell the other thing.

02

What the Dubai market charges, by format

Dubai tutoring rates run from roughly AED 45 an hour for a university-student tutor online to AED 650 an hour at the premium end, and the single biggest determinant is format rather than subject. The table below is the market, not an IB Gram price list, and every band is attributed to whoever published it. Three of the six pages currently ranking for this search publish no price at all; the two that do quote United States dollars, a currency no Dubai family pays tuition in.

Read the table by eliminating the bands that do not apply to you. A Diploma candidate preparing for externally marked HL papers is not in the budget tier: a first-year undergraduate who took the subject three years ago cannot mark to current criteria, and the saving evaporates the moment the feedback is wrong. Equally, the premium band buys reputation as much as teaching, and the evidence that a named tutor moves marks faster than a careful subject specialist at half the rate is not something anyone in this market publishes.

The in-home line deserves attention because it is where the money quietly goes. The travel premium is real and it is paid by the hour, not once: a tutor crossing from Jumeirah to Mirdif at 5pm is pricing ninety minutes of Dubai traffic into a sixty-minute lesson, every week, for the length of the block. IB Gram does not run in-person lessons in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Diploma tuition for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video, which takes that premium out of the invoice and takes the drive-time radius out of the tutor search at the same time.

Two practical cautions on any quoted figure. Ask whether the rate is per hour or per session, because a ninety-minute session at an hourly rate is not what a parent reading a rate card assumes. And ask whether the figure includes value added tax; we do not state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition as settled fact anywhere on this site, because that requires a Federal Tax Authority citation, so ask any provider directly whether their number is inclusive.

Six things that move the Dubai number

Once format is fixed, six variables set the total. Each one is decidable, and five of the six are decidable by you rather than by the market. Families who end up paying twice what they expected usually did so because of the second and third rows below: they started late and then bought three subjects at once, which doubles the weekly spend at exactly the moment the student has least capacity to use it.

Lateness is the expensive one. Fourteen weeks out, a block can be paced at one session a week per subject and the student can absorb the work set between sessions. Six weeks out, the same content needs three sessions a week, and the per-week cost triples while the marginal value of each session falls, because there is no time to practise between them. The cheapest version of exam preparation in Dubai is the one that starts in the Gregorian autumn term of DP2, and it is cheaper by more than any discount anybody in this market offers.

Specialism is the second-largest swing and it is the one that most rewards an online format. The band for a careful Standard Level Business Management tutor and for a Higher Level Chemistry specialist who marks to the current criteria differ by over a hundred dirhams an hour, and the latter is scarce in Dubai in absolute terms. Restrict the search to tutors who can drive to Dubai Hills on a Tuesday and the specialist may simply not exist, which is how families end up paying a specialist rate for a generalist. Live video removes that constraint without raising the rate.

The remaining rows are smaller but they compound over a block. Coursework supervision is slower work than paper practice and is usually priced above it. Session length changes the effective hourly figure. Weekend and post-7pm slots are the scarcest in Dubai and carry the least flexibility on price. And a tutor's permit position matters: the MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years, so a provider loading a licensing fee into a quote is charging you for something that costs nothing to obtain.

04

How many hours one subject actually absorbs

This is the table nobody in this market publishes, and it is the one that decides the budget. The five scenarios below are the ones Dubai families present with, in rough order of frequency. The hours are what a subject specialist would plan for, and the indicative spend applies the AED 200 to AED 300 online specialist band from the rates table above rather than any IB Gram figure.

The thing the table makes visible is that total hours are driven by weeks, not by urgency. A student fourteen weeks out at one session a week buys fourteen hours. The same student at six weeks out, needing the same work done, buys eighteen hours at three a week and gets less from each of them, because the practice time between sessions has gone. Urgency does not compress teaching; it just raises the hourly commitment and lowers the return. Every Dubai family that has done this twice books earlier the second time.

Note the last row particularly. A student who has not covered whole HL topics is not a candidate for a revision block at all, and we say so rather than sell one. Thirty-plus hours across a term is a content rebuild, and it needs a weekly slot from the autumn term, work completed between sessions, and a target expressed as one grade rather than three. A provider who quotes you a six-week package for that situation is quoting for a job that cannot be done in six weeks.

Use the table as an upper and lower bound rather than a prediction, and revisit it after the first marked paper. The single most useful number is not in the table at all: it is the gap between the student's mock mark and the mark their script says they should have had. A student losing eight marks a paper to method and presentation is in the top row of the table whatever their grade looks like. A student losing eight marks because they cannot do the question is in the bottom row.

05

The exam session counted backwards

Dubai Diploma candidates sit the May session, and the reason families start preparation too late is that they count forwards from today rather than backwards from the paper. Counted backwards, the last ten weeks are already committed: mock results land, predicted grades go to universities, internal coursework deadlines fall, and school revision timetables fill the evenings. The window where a new weekly slot can still be absorbed closes well before most parents start looking.

A caution on dates, stated plainly because it matters more than it looks. The International Baccalaureate's own examination and results dates are not restated on this page. The IB's website returns an automated-access error to the tooling that built this site, so no IB session or results date here has been confirmed from the IB itself, and we will not publish one that has not been. Confirm every IB date with your school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org before you plan around it. The Cambridge and Pearson dates referenced below are published by those boards and are cited as such.

What the backwards count does give you, without needing a single confirmed date, is the order of operations and the gaps between them. Coursework deadlines come before mocks. Mocks come before predicted grades. Predicted grades come before the university decisions that make a grade matter. Final entries, for boards that publish their deadlines, sit months before the papers. A UAE Cambridge candidate sits the June series, with November as the resit route, and entries for June close in the spring — a gap of a term and a half between the paperwork and the paper. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE makes the same point with published dates: its November 2026 timetable ran to 19 November 2026 and results reached students the following January, which means the entry for that window was filed while the previous academic year was still running. That is the clearest worked example in this market of how far ahead the administrative clock runs.

The practical use of the table is to find the week you are in and read the row above it. If you are at the mock-results row, the useful purchase is a marking clinic, not a content block. If you are at the coursework-deadline row, the useful purchase is supervision on the student's own draft. If you are past the entry deadline and the student is sitting the papers regardless, the useful purchase is timed-paper practice and nothing else. Buying the wrong row is the most common way to waste money on exam preparation in this city.

Where marks actually go missing in the final six weeks

  • Command-term drift: evaluate answered as explain, outline answered at length
  • Unshown working forfeiting method marks on correct answers
  • Uncertainties, units and axis labels treated as presentation rather than marks
  • No full paper ever sat to time, so the final question is never reached
  • Revision time split equally across six subjects regardless of marginal grade

In the last six weeks the marks a Dubai Diploma student loses are rarely marks they do not know how to get. They are marks lost in transit between a correct thought and a written answer, and they are diagnosable from a script in about fifteen minutes. This is why a marking clinic is the highest-value purchase late in the year and a content block is the lowest: the student already has the chemistry, and the eight marks are going somewhere specific.

The commonest leak is command-term drift. A question that says evaluate gets an answer that explains; a question that says outline gets three paragraphs where two sentences were wanted and the time is gone for the next question. The second commonest is working: in Maths and Physics, method marks are awarded for shown steps, and a student who computes in their head forfeits marks on an answer that is correct. The third is presentation in data questions, where uncertainties, units and axis labels carry marks that students treat as decoration.

Timing failure is the one that produces the biggest single drop and the one students deny most. A candidate who has never sat a full paper to time will almost always run out of minutes in the last question, which is frequently the highest-mark question on the paper. Three full timed papers in the last month, marked properly, is worth more than twelve hours of topic revision for a student in this position, and it is cheaper.

The last category is specific to the Diploma: students who have budgeted their revision as six equal subjects. The Diploma total is driven by the Higher Level grades and by the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay bonus points, and a student spending equal time on a secure Standard Level language and a shaky Higher Level science is spending their scarcest resource badly. Allocating revision by marginal grade rather than by subject count is free, and it is the single change that most often moves a total.

07

What mock results are and are not evidence of

Dubai schools run internal mocks in January and families treat the result as a prediction. It is better understood as a measurement with a known bias. Mock papers are frequently set from previous sessions, marked by the class teacher rather than externally, and graded against boundaries the school has chosen, sometimes deliberately harsh to create urgency. A mock 4 is evidence that something is wrong; it is not evidence of what, and it is not a forecast.

The useful information is inside the script, not on the cover sheet. Two students with the same mock 4 can need entirely different work: one lost marks evenly across every question, which indicates a content gap, and the other scored well until question six and then stopped, which indicates timing. The first needs a term; the second needs three timed papers. Ask the school for the marked script rather than the grade, and have it read by someone who marks to the criteria.

Mocks matter for a second reason that is specific to the Diploma: predicted grades follow them, and predicted grades are what universities see. A student whose predicted grade is one below a conditional offer has a narrow and specific job, which is to produce evidence of movement that a subject teacher can act on. That means marked work at the higher standard, in the subject in question, in time for the school to revisit the prediction. Generic effort does not move a predicted grade; a stack of marked papers sometimes does.

We do not publish grade-movement statistics on this site, and neither should anyone else without the underlying data, a sample size and a method. What we can say is what the process produces: a marked script per week, a written record of the errors that repeat, and a visible change or no change in the mark on the next timed paper. If the mark is not moving after four marked papers, that is information, and the honest response is to change the approach rather than to sell more hours.

Ramadan, Eid and the Dubai revision calendar

Ramadan falls inside the Diploma revision window, and in Dubai it changes the school day for everyone regardless of whether a family is fasting. Schools shorten hours, after-school activities thin out, and the useful hours in a day move. A revision plan written in October that assumes a 5pm session every week will break in Ramadan, and the families who cope are the ones who planned the shift rather than reacted to it.

The practical adjustment is to move sessions rather than cancel them. For fasting students the hour before Iftar is the worst slot available and the two hours after it are among the best, which in practice means a session at 8:30pm or 9pm that would be unusual at any other time of year. Non-fasting students often find the shortened school day gives them a better afternoon slot than they have all year. Because lessons are delivered over live video, moving a slot costs nothing but a message, which is a genuine operational advantage in this specific month.

Eid is a hard stop and should be treated as one in the plan. Two consecutive weeks with no sessions late in the revision window is a real loss if nothing is set for them, and a real gain if something is. The pattern that works is to set timed papers for the break rather than content, because a paper can be sat at any hour and marked afterwards, whereas a content session needs both people present and alert.

There is a wider calendar point behind this. Dubai's academic year, the Gregorian examination session, the Hijri calendar and the UAE public holiday schedule do not line up, and the Diploma timetable is set internationally with no reference to any of them. Nobody else writing about exam preparation in this city acknowledges that, which is why so many revision plans in Dubai are built on a calendar the student does not actually live in.

What a tutor may and may not touch in coursework

  • Permitted: criterion explanation, content teaching, questioning, feedback on the student's own draft
  • Permitted: teaching referencing and how to handle data and uncertainty
  • Prohibited: supplying text for submission or editing a piece to its final form
  • Prohibited: choosing the research question on the student's behalf
  • A finished assessment bought from anyone is the student's malpractice risk, not the seller's

Everything in the Diploma that carries the student's name must be the student's own work, and the IB treats breaches as malpractice with consequences that reach the diploma itself. That makes the boundary around Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay a practical matter rather than an ethical flourish, and it is worth stating exactly where the line sits before any money changes hands.

On the permitted side: explaining what a criterion asks for, teaching the subject content the task requires, discussing whether a research question is viable, teaching how to handle uncertainty in a data set, questioning a line of reasoning, pointing at a paragraph that does not support its claim, and teaching referencing. All of that is teaching, and a tutor who does it well changes a mark substantially, because most students lose Internal Assessment marks to criteria they never understood rather than to a lack of ability.

On the prohibited side, stated plainly: a tutor must not supply text for a student to submit, must not rewrite a passage into its final form, must not select the research question for the student, and must not edit a piece to completion. A provider in this market sells finished Internal Assessments at around AED 3,750. That is a malpractice trigger for the student, and the student carries the consequence, not the seller. We will not do it and we say so on every page, because the honest version of this boundary is a differentiator in this particular search result.

There is a related rule specific to the UAE that parents ask about. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also addresses serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. That is press-reported rather than read from the current policy document, so verify it against ADEK directly if it affects you, but the direction of travel is clear enough that nobody should be marketing a child's own teacher as a private tutor.

After the results: equivalency, retakes and UAE university entry

Exam preparation has a purpose beyond the grade, and in the UAE that purpose runs through the Ministry of Education's equivalency process. A certificate earned in Dubai has to be recognised before it is usable for a UAE university application, and the requirements differ by curriculum. Four of the ten query clusters researched for this site contain no competitor page that mentions equivalency at all, and one publishes the wrong subject count for the British track.

The British-track rules are published and can be stated precisely. A student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no lower than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. For the American track, English proficiency requires an IELTS academic score of 5, a TOEFL iBT score of 61, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the Diploma itself, there is a gap we will not fill with a guess. The source that sets out the British and American tracks states no IB points threshold, so no IB equivalency figure appears on this page. Check it on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate. Equivalency is also not something IB Gram performs, guarantees or assists with as a service: it is a government process, you apply through the official channel, and no amount of tutoring is required for it.

The retake question comes up on results day every year. The Diploma runs a November session as well as a May one, and a student can re-sit specific subjects rather than the whole diploma. The decision is time-sensitive and is better made before results arrive than after, because the preparation window between a May result and a November session is short and the entry administration sits inside it. If a conditional offer is at risk, speak to the Diploma coordinator about the retake route in the week results land, not a month later.

When no specialist is free, and what that costs

No competitor page researched for this site discloses a coverage limit, and several route UAE parents to a phone number in another country without saying so. The honest position is that availability is finite and it is worst at exactly the moment Dubai families need it, which is the ten weeks before the May session, in Higher Level sciences and Higher Level Maths, in the 5pm to 7pm Gulf Standard Time window.

What we do in that situation is say so and give you the options rather than hold a slot you cannot use. The first option is a different time: an early-morning weekend session or a 7:30am weekday slot before school is unpopular and frequently available, and for a motivated DP2 student it works. The second is a different tutor at the same level with a slightly different background, which is usually a better trade than waiting. The third is a wait with a date attached, which is only sensible if the date is inside the useful window.

There is a fourth option that needs stating clearly. Where no UAE-based specialist covers a niche Higher Level combination, the tutor who does may be based elsewhere, most often in India, teaching the same Diploma syllabus into Gulf Standard Time over live video. That is disclosed before anything is booked, not after. It is the same syllabus, the same criteria and the same marked papers; what differs is the tutor's location, and a family is entitled to know that before deciding rather than discovering it from an accent on the first call.

The commercial consequence is worth being honest about too. A scarce specialism sits at the top of the market band, so a niche Higher Level requirement booked late is the most expensive version of this purchase available. Booked in the autumn term of DP2 it is an ordinary weekly slot at an ordinary rate. That is the whole argument of this page restated: in Dubai, the variable that moves the number most is not the tutor you choose, it is the week you start.

Areas we cover across Dubai

Dubai is a long city and the school-run shapes the evening. Because lessons run over live video, the only thing an area changes for us is what time a session can realistically start and which school calendar the student is working to. These are the communities Dubai Diploma families contact us from most.

Dubai Marina and JLT

High-rise, heavily expatriate, and the area where a tutor in the room is hardest to arrange because parking and tower access eat fifteen minutes each way. Most students here are home by 4pm and can take a 4:30pm slot.

Al Barsha and Umm Al Sheif

The densest cluster of IB and British schools in the city sits within a few kilometres. Students often finish at 3pm but lose the next hour to after-school activities, which pushes the realistic session start to 5pm or later.

Emirates Hills and the Meadows

Villa communities feeding the Emirates Hills and Springs school cluster. Long bus routes mean a 3:15pm finish can become a 4:15pm arrival, so first slots here are usually 4:45pm onwards.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills

Two-car families with a long commute into the city for work, which makes a parent-free evening session the norm rather than the exception. Weekend morning slots are in heavier demand here than anywhere else in Dubai.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Served by IB continuum schools on the Deira side of the city. The Al Khail and Emirates Road crossing is the constraint, and families here are the most likely to tell us that an in-home tutor cancelled on traffic.

Downtown, Business Bay and Za'abeel

Apartment living close to the business district, with students at schools across the city rather than at a local one. Mixed finish times make a fixed weekly slot more valuable here than a flexible one.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Older villa districts with a mix of British and IB schools within a short drive. Sibling bookings are common, and the practical gain from video is running two children back-to-back from the same desk.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

University-adjacent communities with a younger school-age population and newer schools. Families here are often weighing an IB continuum school against a British one for Year 7 entry.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Emirates Hills and Umm Suqeim

The city's thickest band of Diploma provision, which means plenty of in-school teaching capacity but also the most competitive predicted-grade environment in Dubai. Students here usually need technique rather than content.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Dubai Festival City

IB continuum schools on the eastern side of the city, where a student may have been in the Primary Years Programme since FS1. Transition questions dominate: MYP criteria into DP grades, and whether HL choices match the degree the family has in mind.

  • Deira International School
  • Uptown International School
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy

Nad Al Sheba, Dubai Hills and Arabian Ranches

Newer villa-community schools, several with Diploma cohorts small enough that one subject has a single teacher. That is where outside subject specialists earn their rate most clearly at exam time.

  • Repton School Dubai
  • JESS Arabian Ranches
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Greenfield International School

Named schools and communities are listed as context for the Dubai IB ecosystem; IB Gram claims no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any school or school group named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the paper, not the subject

Send the subject, the level, the session the student is sitting, and the specific paper or topic where marks are being lost. A message that says Chemistry HL, May session, Paper 2 organic and energetics gets a specialist and a realistic hours estimate on the first reply. One that says Chemistry gets a question back.

  2. 02

    Send one marked script

A recent mock paper or a past paper sat to time is worth more than any description of the problem. We read it against the published criteria and tell you whether this is a content job or a technique job, because that distinction changes the number of hours by a factor of five and therefore changes the cost by the same factor.

  3. 03

    Take the trial lesson

One 45-minute session per student over live video, with no card details taken. The tutor works through part of the script with the student while you watch or not, as you prefer. You come out of it with a named tutor, a view on hours, and the student's own opinion on whether the person was useful, which matters more than ours.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and the length of the block

Agree a weekly time in Gulf Standard Time and a block length taken from the hours table above rather than from a package someone wants to sell. Short blocks that are renewed are better than long ones that are abandoned, and a fixed slot survives the January mock period in a way that a flexible one does not.

  5. 05

Review on marked papers, not on feeling

Every few weeks, read the marks on the timed papers rather than asking whether the sessions are going well. If the mark is moving, continue. If it is not moving after four marked papers, the approach needs to change, and the honest response to that is a different plan rather than more hours of the same one.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Prices on the page, attributed

Every AED band here carries the name of whoever published it and the month it was read. Three of the six pages competing for this search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote dollars. A family cannot plan a budget against a sentence that says rates are competitive.

Hours, not packages

The hours table is built from five realistic starting points and shows the total, not a monthly figure that hides it. A block should be the length the diagnosis says, and when that length is thirty hours across a term rather than six weeks, we say so instead of selling a package that cannot do the job.

Online because the specialist matters more than the postcode

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not make home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. The gain is not only the removed travel premium, it is that a family in Dubai Hills can work with the right Higher Level specialist rather than the nearest available tutor.

The coursework boundary in writing

A tutor teaches criteria, content and technique, and gives feedback on work the student has already produced. A tutor does not supply text for submission or edit a piece to completion. That boundary is published here because at least one provider in this market sells the other thing, and the student carries the risk.

Regulators named, accreditation not claimed

Dubai private schools sit under KHDA; Abu Dhabi under ADEK; Sharjah under SPEA. Individual private tutors need a MoHRE private tuition work permit, granted free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. IB Gram holds no regulator or examination-board accreditation and claims none.

Dates we have not verified stay off the page

Cambridge and Pearson timetable dates here come from those boards' own published pages. No International Baccalaureate session or results date is restated, because the IB's site blocks the automated checking this site uses and an unverified date on thousands of pages is thousands of errors.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does IB exam preparation in Dubai cost for a full revision block?+

Work from hours rather than from a monthly figure. A qualified subject tutor online trades in a market band of roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, and an IB specialist for Higher Level sciences or Maths runs AED 200 to AED 450, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate quoting AED 200 to AED 450 and above. A typical ten to fourteen week block at one session a week is ten to fourteen hours, so AED 2,000 to AED 4,200 at specialist rates for one subject. Six weeks at three sessions a week is eighteen hours and costs more for less benefit, because there is no practice time between sessions.

When should a Dubai IB student start revising for the May session?+

The useful window opens in the autumn term of DP2 and closes around ten weeks out, when mocks, predicted grades and internal coursework deadlines fill the evenings. A student who starts in the autumn term can take one session a week, absorb work between sessions, and treat the January mock as a checkpoint rather than an emergency. A student starting six weeks out needs three sessions a week to cover the same ground and gets less from each one. Starting earlier is the cheapest decision available in this market, and it costs nothing to make. Confirm your own session dates with the school's Diploma coordinator.

How many hours of exam preparation does one HL subject need?+

It depends on whether the problem is content or technique, and the two differ by about a factor of five. A student who knows the content and loses marks on method, command terms and timing usually needs ten to fourteen hours across ten to fourteen weeks. A student weak across one whole paper needs sixteen to twenty hours at two sessions a week. A student with whole Higher Level topics never covered needs thirty hours or more across a full term, and the realistic target there is one grade rather than three. One marked past paper tells you which case you are in before you spend anything.

Does the price of exam preparation rise as the May session gets closer?+

The hourly rate does not move much; the weekly commitment does, which is what raises the total. Dubai schools sit the May session almost universally, so demand for the final ten weeks concentrates into the same window and the 5pm to 7pm slots go first. A late start forces two or three sessions a week instead of one, so the monthly spend can triple while the value per session falls. The scarce specialisms, Higher Level Maths and the Higher Level sciences, are also the ones where the top of the band applies, so a niche late booking is the most expensive version of this purchase.

Why do two Dubai tutors quote very different hourly rates for the same subject?+

Four things usually explain the gap. Format: an in-home visit prices travel into every hour, with the market paying AED 180 to AED 500 against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. Specialism: a tutor who marks Higher Level work to the current criteria is scarcer than one who covers the subject generally. Scope: coursework supervision is slower work per hour than paper practice. And session length, because a ninety-minute session quoted at an hourly rate is not what a rate card implies. Ask which of the four explains the number before comparing two quotes.

Can we book exam preparation for three subjects without paying three times over?+

Not really, and it is usually the wrong question. Three subjects means three specialists and three rates, because no single tutor marks Higher Level Chemistry, Higher Level Maths and English A to current criteria. More importantly, a student with three subjects in trouble ten weeks out has a capacity problem rather than a teaching problem: nine sessions a week leaves no time to practise. The better move is to allocate by marginal grade, pick the one or two subjects where hours convert into points, and use marked timed papers rather than teaching for the rest.

What does an exam preparation session look like in Gulf Standard Time?+

Sessions run one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, usually 60 or 90 minutes. Most Dubai families take a slot between 4:30pm and 7:30pm on a weekday, with weekend mornings in heavy demand from the villa communities. The student shares the script or the question set on screen, the tutor annotates it live, and the annotated version is saved for the student afterwards. Work is set between sessions and marked at the next one. IB Gram does not run in-person lessons in Dubai; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

Are mock results a reliable guide to how much preparation is needed?+

They are a signal, not a forecast. Dubai schools often set mocks from previous sessions, mark them internally, and apply boundaries they choose themselves, sometimes deliberately severe. The grade tells you something is wrong; the script tells you what. Two students on the same mock 4 can need completely different work, one losing marks evenly across every question, which indicates content, and the other scoring well until question six and stopping, which indicates timing. Ask the school for the marked script rather than the grade, and have it read by someone who marks to the published criteria.

Will exam preparation clash with my child's IA and Extended Essay deadlines?+

Almost certainly, because schools in Dubai set internal coursework deadlines ahead of the board's own, and those deadlines land in the same term as mocks. Plan the collision rather than discover it. Supervision on the student's own draft is slower work than paper practice and is usually priced above it, so fit it into the calendar before the revision block rather than alongside it. A tutor may explain criteria, question reasoning and give feedback on what the student has already produced; a tutor may not supply text for submission or edit a piece to its final form.

How does Ramadan affect an IB revision timetable in Dubai?+

Ramadan falls inside the revision window and changes the school day for every family in Dubai, fasting or not. Schools shorten hours, activities thin out, and the useful part of the day moves. For fasting students the hour before Iftar is the worst available slot and the two hours after it are among the best, so a 8:30pm or 9pm session is normal in this month. Non-fasting students often gain a better afternoon slot from the shortened day. Because lessons run over live video, moving a slot costs a message. For Eid, set timed papers rather than cancelling the fortnight.

Is it cheaper to prepare for exams in a group class or one to one?+

Per student, yes. The market pays roughly AED 90 to AED 200 per student per hour for a group of two to four, against AED 150 to AED 450 one to one. The saving is real and the condition is strict: it works only when the students share a school, a subject, a level and a similar starting mark. A pair where one needs content and the other needs technique wastes both of their time. Group formats are also unsuitable for coursework supervision, where the work must stay the individual student's own.

What can a tutor legally do with past papers and mark schemes?+

A tutor can reference official material, cite it, link to it and teach from a student's own legitimately obtained copy. A tutor should not reproduce or supply examination board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads, because that is copyright infringement and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. In practice this makes little difference to a session: the work is on the student's own script and on questions the student has access to through their school, and official timetables and syllabus pages are linked rather than copied.

Does KHDA set or cap what a private tutor in Dubai may charge?+

No. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, and it regulates schools, including their tuition fees; it did not increase private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year. Individual private tutoring sits elsewhere: the route is a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. There is no published cap on a private tutor's hourly rate. A tuition operation with premises and staff is a different matter and needs a KHDA educational services permit for a training institute.

What happens if my child needs the November retake session?+

The Diploma runs a November session as well as a May one, and a student can re-sit individual subjects rather than the whole diploma. The decision is time-sensitive, because the preparation window between a May result and a November session is short and the entry administration sits inside it. If a conditional offer is at risk, raise the retake route with the Diploma coordinator in the week results arrive rather than a month later. Confirm all session and entry dates with the school or on ibo.org; no International Baccalaureate dates are restated on this page.

Does my child need the IB diploma attested before applying to a UAE university?+

A certificate earned in Dubai generally has to go through the Ministry of Education's equivalency and attestation process before it is usable for a UAE university application, and the requirements differ by curriculum. For the British track the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no lower than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. No IB points threshold appears in that source, so check the Diploma requirement on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority. IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency.

What happens if no tutor is free for a niche HL subject at exam time?+

We tell you before you book rather than after. The tight combination is a Higher Level science or Higher Level Maths in the 5pm to 7pm window in the final ten weeks. The options are an unpopular but available slot, such as a weekend morning or 7:30am before school; a different tutor at the same level; a marking clinic format instead of weekly teaching; or a specialist based outside the UAE, most often in India, teaching the same syllabus into Gulf Standard Time over live video. That last one is disclosed up front, because a family deserves to decide rather than discover.

Start with one marked script

The useful first step is not a phone call about rates. Send the subject, the level, the session your child is sitting, and one paper sat to time. A subject specialist reads it against the published criteria and tells you whether this is a content job or a technique job, because that single distinction decides whether you are buying fourteen hours or thirty. From there you get a named tutor, an hours estimate taken from the table on this page, and a 45-minute trial lesson with no card details taken. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. If the honest answer is that a block cannot do the job in the weeks left, we will tell you that too.
