IB DP German B Tutor in Dubai

Ask an IB DP German B tutor in Dubai how your child is doing and you should get artefacts, not adjectives: four marked tasks with the criterion scores on each, a named error family, a recorded oral from three weeks ago and the same task again now. This page sets out exactly what evidence a German B engagement should produce, in what order, and how a Dubai parent reads it. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every written task returned with criterion scores and one named error family
  • Oral rehearsals recorded and re-marked, so progress is watchable not asserted
  • A written six-weekly review that compares like with like, never a predicted grade
  • Live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time; no home visits anywhere in the UAE

How to tell whether German B tutoring is working, six weeks in

Most tutoring in this city is sold on inputs and reported on feelings. A family buys an hour a week, and after two months they are told the student is more confident. Confidence is real, and it is not evidence. For German B there is a better standard available, because every part of this subject produces something that can be kept, scored and compared: written tasks marked against three published criteria, listening and reading answers that are right or wrong, and an individual oral that is recorded.

That matters more in German than in most language subjects, because German errors are structural rather than lexical. A student does not drift gently towards accuracy. They guess the case after a two-way preposition, they put the verb in second position inside a subordinate clause where it belongs at the end, they reach for the Perfekt where the written register wants the Präteritum, and they apply an adjective ending from the wrong column. Those are four distinct error families, each with its own fix, and conversation practice will not reveal which one is doing the damage. A marked script will.

So the honest question to ask a German B tutor is not whether your child is improving. It is: show me the four most recent marked tasks, tell me the criterion scores on each, name the error family you targeted between task two and task three, and show me whether it moved. A tutor who can answer that in two minutes is working to evidence. A tutor who answers with a general impression may still be teaching well, but neither of you can tell.

Dubai makes the evidence question sharper for a practical reason. German B cohorts here are small, often a combined Standard and Higher Level group of a handful of students, and in a group that size a school's internal marks move for reasons that have nothing to do with the student: one strong classmate leaves, the teacher changes, an assessment is set at a different difficulty. Independent marked evidence is the only stable reference a Dubai family has, and it is the thing a tutor is uniquely placed to produce.

The rest of this page is the evidence specification: which artefacts a German B engagement should produce and how often, what the first diagnostic session must isolate, how Paper 1 is marked criterion by criterion, the four German error families and the diagnostic question that identifies each, a twelve-week cycle written out week by week, how recorded orals are used, and finally what evidence cannot do. Teaching is one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Evidence of progress means different things at different stages, because what counts as an artefact changes. The notes below describe what each programme produces that a tutor can actually measure.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

German B runs at Standard and Higher Level. Both levels sit Paper 1 as a single written task, Paper 2 as separate listening and reading papers, and an internally conducted individual oral. Higher Level adds two literary works and builds its oral on an extract from one of them, which changes what rehearsal evidence looks like.

In Dubai, German B sets are small and frequently combined across both levels. A Higher Level student in a combined room gets less literature discussion time than the course assumes, so the literature artefacts - extract notes, recorded three-minute responses - are usually the ones missing when a family first asks for help.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP German is reported in phases and assessed against its own criteria, which means a student arrives in DP1 with years of criterion-referenced feedback already written about them. Read properly, that history shows whether the same error family has been flagged since Year 9.

Dubai families move schools often enough that MYP reports come from two or three different institutions, graded by different teachers with different standards. The useful exercise is not comparing the grades but reading the comments for a repeated phrase, because a structural error nobody has fixed in three years will not fix itself in DP1.

German national curriculum transfersAges 15-17 · Entry to DP1

Moving into the Diploma from a German-medium school

A student who has studied in German rather than studied German arrives with fluency and no familiarity with the IB's criteria, text types or command terms. Their first marked task often scores well on language and poorly on message and conceptual understanding, which is the exact inverse of the usual profile.

This happens regularly in Dubai because of the city's German-speaking community, and it is the clearest case for marked evidence. Fluency hides the gap in classroom conversation and reveals it immediately in a scored task, so a diagnostic written piece in the first fortnight saves a term of misdirected work.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students meet German through the language development core requirement rather than as an examined subject, so the evidence is a portfolio of documented development rather than criterion-scored tasks. The artefacts are different and the reporting cadence is different.

Few Dubai schools run the CP, so families often reach this requirement without a clear sense of what evidence satisfies it. Support is short, and the measure of success is whether the portfolio stands up, not whether a paper score moved.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below lists the language acquisition courses we teach, described by what each one produces as measurable evidence, since that is the subject of this page.

German B

SL and HL

Highly diagnosable. Structural errors recur in predictable families, which means a marked task identifies the cause rather than just the symptom. Progress is visible within three marked tasks if the right family is targeted, and invisible for a term if the wrong one is.

German B HL literature

HL only

Evidence here is a recorded three to four minute response to an extract from one of the school's two chosen works, re-recorded a month later on a different extract. Comparing the two recordings is the only honest measure of whether discussion range has grown.

German ab initio

SL only

For genuine beginners, Standard Level only, with two short written tasks rather than one long one and no literature. Evidence is coverage-based: whether the student can produce five sentences and a minute of speech on each prescribed topic rather than recognise vocabulary on a slide.

French B

SL and HL

The same assessment architecture, a different error profile. French errors cluster in sound-to-spelling and in tense formation rather than in case and word order, so the diagnostic questions differ even though the marking criteria are identical.

Spanish B

SL and HL

Written accuracy arrives earlier than in German for most learners, so the evidence pattern inverts: Spanish students often show criterion gains on message and conceptual understanding first, with language scores already respectable.

Mandarin B

SL and HL

Reading speed is the measurable constraint. A timed reading log kept across a term shows progress more reliably than paper scores, because a student can understand everything and still run out of time in the exam.

Arabic B

SL and HL

Directly relevant in Dubai, where KHDA requires Arabic in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum. A Diploma student taking Arabic B typically also sits in the school's mandatory Arabic stream, and the two produce different kinds of feedback.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Shares the internally assessed oral season with German B, so the two compete for the same DP2 rehearsal weeks. Families booking both should fix the order of the oral windows before booking either set of sessions.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Produces drafts rather than scores, and the drafts must be the student's own. A tutor comments on the student's thinking and the student's writing; the exhibition and the essay are written by the student alone.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each shape below is defined by what it produces rather than by how long it lasts, because the artefact is the point. All teaching is live and online.

Weekly teaching with marking between sessions

A fixed weekly slot, plus a written task set at the end of each session and marked before the next. The marking happens outside the paid hour, which keeps contact time for teaching and produces one scored artefact a week. Over a term that is roughly twelve marked tasks, which is enough to see a trend rather than a mood.

  • One criterion-scored task a week, annotated and returned
  • Error log maintained across sessions so patterns are visible
  • One error family targeted at a time, named in writing
  • Fixed Gulf Standard Time slot agreed before the first session

Recorded oral cycle

A rehearsal recorded every third week on a stimulus the student has not seen, re-marked against the same criteria each time. The recordings are kept, so a student in April can watch themselves in November. For an internally assessed component, that comparison is the most persuasive evidence available to anyone.

  • Unseen stimulus each time, under the real preparation conditions
  • Same criteria applied at every recording for comparability
  • At Higher Level, extracts from the school's two chosen works
  • Recordings retained for the student and the family to review

Diagnostic and review block

A short engagement for families who want to know what is wrong before committing to a year: a written diagnostic, a reading and listening probe, a recorded oral, and a written report naming the error families in priority order. It ends with a plan you can take to the school or to any tutor, including ours.

  • Two to three sessions, fixed scope
  • Written output you keep regardless of what you do next
  • Error families ranked, with an estimated time to change each
  • Useful before DP2 begins or ahead of a level decision

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The artefacts a German B engagement should produce

Progress in a language is invisible week to week and obvious across a term, which is why it has to be recorded rather than remembered. The table lists the artefacts a German B engagement should generate, who makes each one, what it actually proves and how often it should appear. A family holding these can answer the question honestly without relying on anyone's impression, including the tutor's.

Two of them do most of the work. The first is a criterion-scored written task, weekly, annotated rather than merely marked. Scores alone are weak evidence because task difficulty varies; scores plus annotation plus a named target are strong, because the next task tests the target. The second is the recorded oral taken on an unseen stimulus at a fixed interval, which is the only way to compare speaking performance against itself rather than against a memory of last term.

The error log is the least glamorous artefact and the most diagnostic. It is a running list of every structural error with its family tagged: case after a two-way preposition, verb position in a subordinate clause, past-tense register, adjective ending. After four weeks the distribution is unmistakable, and it is frequently not what either the student or the school believed. A student convinced they are bad at cases quite often turns out to be making almost all their case errors after one specific set of prepositions, which is a fifty-minute fix rather than a term's work.

What is not evidence: a mark out of ten with no criteria behind it, a comment that the student is engaging well, a percentage improvement with no sample size or method, or a predicted grade from anyone other than the school. We do not issue predicted grades, and any provider quoting a success statistic should be asked for the number of students, the dates and the method on the same page as the claim.

The first session is a diagnostic, not a lesson

A first German B session spent teaching is a wasted session, because nobody yet knows what to teach. The useful first hour is a set of probes designed to isolate error families, and it should produce a written finding rather than a warm feeling. Each probe is short, and together they take under an hour.

The probes are specific. Translate four sentences that each force a different case after a two-way preposition, and the case problem either appears or it does not. Write two sentences joined by a subordinating conjunction, and verb position shows itself immediately. Narrate the same short event twice, once as speech and once as a written report, and the Perfekt and Präteritum choice becomes visible. Describe a person with three adjectives before the noun, and the adjective ending column either is known or is being guessed. Read one short authentic-style text aloud and answer two questions pointing to the supporting words.

The table below sets out what each probe reveals and what we most often find in a Dubai cohort, where students arrive from very different German backgrounds. The fluent heritage speaker and the Year 10 late starter sitting in the same combined class produce almost opposite findings, and a tutor who begins teaching before establishing which one they have will spend six weeks on the wrong thing.

The output of the diagnostic should be written down and given to the family: the error families ranked, an estimated time to change each, and which one will be targeted first. That document is also the baseline against which the six-weekly review compares. Without a baseline, every later claim about progress is unfalsifiable, which is precisely how tutoring in this market usually gets reported.

Marking Paper 1 criterion by criterion

  • Language, message and conceptual understanding at roughly 12, 12 and 6 marks
  • Fewer than half the available marks are grammar and vocabulary
  • Three-task cycle: baseline, targeted task, retention check
  • Controlled accurate German outscores ambitious German that loses structure

Paper 1 is a single written task chosen from three options, each naming a text type, an audience and a purpose. In the current guide it is marked on three criteria: language, message and conceptual understanding, carrying twelve, twelve and six marks. Check the exact allocations against your child's subject guide, because they belong to the IB, but the shape is what matters here. Grammar and vocabulary account for less than half the total.

This is why criterion-level marking changes a family's understanding of their own child. A student who scores well on language and badly on message is not weak at German; they are writing the wrong text. A student who scores respectably on both and loses the conceptual marks has not registered the audience and purpose they were given. Two students with the same overall mark can need entirely different teaching, and a single number at the top of a script hides that completely.

The practical cycle is three tasks long. Task one is marked across all three criteria with no target set, to establish the baseline. The lowest criterion becomes the target, and task two is written to a brief that tests it specifically. Task three checks whether the gain held when attention moved on, because a change that survives inattention is a change and anything else is compliance. Families should expect to see those three scripts together, not one at a time.

For German specifically, the language criterion rewards accurate structure more than ambitious vocabulary. A task written in controlled German with correct cases and verb positions scores better than one reaching for impressive nouns and losing control of the clause. Telling a student to write less ambitiously is counterintuitive advice that frequently gains three or four marks immediately, and it is the clearest example of why criterion-level evidence beats general encouragement.

04

The four German error families, and the question that identifies each

Almost every structural error in a German B script belongs to one of four families, and each has a diagnostic question that identifies it in under a minute. This is the difference between German and most other B subjects: the errors are systematic, so they are fixable systematically rather than by general exposure.

Case selection is the first family, and it is usually narrower than students fear. Most case errors in Dubai scripts cluster after the prepositions that take either accusative or dative depending on whether movement is involved, rather than being spread evenly across all four cases. The diagnostic question is simply whether the error rate changes when those prepositions are removed from the task. If it does, the fix is a focused two to four weeks on motion versus position, not a term of grammar.

Verb position is the second. A student who knows perfectly well that the verb goes to the end of a subordinate clause will still leave it in second position when writing at speed, because the rule has not yet become automatic. The diagnostic is accuracy under timing against accuracy without it; a large gap means automation work, which is short sentences at volume rather than explanation. Explanation has already happened, often for years.

Past-tense register is the third and the one schools flag least. German draws a distinction between the spoken and written past that English does not, and a student who writes a formal report in the conversational past loses language and conceptual marks simultaneously. The fourth family is adjective endings, where students pick from the wrong column because they are reading the article rather than the case and gender. The table pairs each family with its symptom, its diagnostic question and the work that changes it.

GERMAN B STRUCTURAL ERROR FAMILIES - SYMPTOM, DIAGNOSTIC, FIX

05

A twelve-week cycle, written out

Evidence only means something on a schedule, so here is one term laid out. The cycle assumes one weekly session with marking between, a recorded oral every third week, and a written review at week six and week twelve. It is deliberately unremarkable: the value is that each week produces something a parent can look at.

Weeks one to three establish the baseline and target the first error family. The diagnostic in week one, the first marked task in week two, the first recorded oral in week three. By the end of week three a family should have a written statement of the error families in priority order, two criterion-scored scripts and one recording. If any of those three is missing, the engagement is already not producing evidence.

Weeks four to eight are the working middle, and they are where most tutoring quietly loses its thread. The protection is the retention check: the error family targeted in week four is retested in week seven, on a task that is not about it. If the gain held, the next family begins. If it did not, the same family continues, and the review says so rather than moving on to keep the sessions feeling fresh.

Weeks nine to twelve add exam conditions, because accuracy that survives timing is the only accuracy that counts in May. The second recorded oral is compared directly with the first from week three, which is the single most convincing artefact in the whole set. The week twelve review compares like with like: same criteria, same stimulus type, different task. Nothing in it predicts a grade, because predicting is the school's job and a prediction would be the least useful line on the page.

06

Why the recorded oral is the most useful thing we keep

  • Same criteria and same stimulus type every recording, or the comparison is worthless
  • Stimulus must be genuinely unseen, under the real preparation conditions
  • Students change behaviour after watching themselves, not after being told
  • At HL, monthly extract responses on the school's own two chosen works

The individual oral is internally conducted and recorded by the school, and it carries a quarter of the grade. At Standard Level it starts from a visual stimulus linked to one of the prescribed themes; at Higher Level it starts from an extract from one of the two literary works the school chose. Because the real thing is a recording, a rehearsal recording is an unusually faithful simulation, which makes it the best evidence in the set.

The mechanics matter. Rehearsals use a stimulus the student has genuinely not seen, under the real preparation conditions, and are marked against the same criteria every time. Changing the stimulus type between recordings destroys comparability, which is how families end up with four recordings that cannot be compared with each other. Keeping the format fixed and the content unseen is what makes the April recording meaningful next to the November one.

The second reason to record is that students do not believe descriptions of their own speech. Tell a student their word order collapses when they are thinking, and they will disagree. Show them ninety seconds of themselves doing it, and the next rehearsal is different. For the German error families in particular, which are structural and therefore audible, watching is worth more than being told, and it shortens the fix by weeks.

At Higher Level the recordings carry an extra job. They show whether the student can discuss a literary extract rather than retell it, which is the commonest Higher Level failure and the one a combined-level Dubai class has least time to address. A monthly extract response, recorded, is the only way to see that range growing. Ask any prospective Higher Level tutor which two works your child's school chose before agreeing anything, because a tutor working from different texts is rehearsing the wrong thing.

07

What evidence cannot do

Evidence tells you what has happened. It does not tell you what will happen, and a tutor who converts a marked-task trend into a promised grade has stopped doing the thing that made the evidence valuable. We do not issue predicted grades for German B. The school does that, with access to a full cohort and the school's own assessment history, and our review notes are written to be useful alongside that rather than in competition with it.

Nor does evidence justify statistics. A provider in this market claiming that a percentage of their students improved should be asked, on the same page, for the number of students, the dates covered and the method of measurement. Without those three, the figure is decoration. We publish none, which is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight: at the scale these pages operate, an unsourced number repeated across hundreds of URLs is hundreds of liabilities.

Two more limits worth stating plainly. A tutor can mark, annotate and teach; a tutor cannot write or rewrite work your child submits as their own, cannot draft an Extended Essay or a TOK essay, and has no part in a recorded individual oral beyond rehearsal beforehand. IB academic honesty rules place the consequences on the student. And on tutor status: we ask tutors to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, applied for through MoHRE's own channels. Holding it is a legal requirement for the tutor, not an endorsement of IB Gram by anyone.

For completeness on the things families often ask in the same breath: IB Gram operates no premises in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, IB or Cambridge endorsement, and does not offer home visits in the Emirates. Market rates in this city, from published provider rate cards and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table read in October 2026, run roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified language teacher online and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an IB-experienced specialist. Our rate is agreed in writing after the free trial lesson.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

The evidence cycle on this page runs identically wherever you live, because the lesson is delivered over video. What changes by community is the hour a session can hold without being cancelled, and a cancelled session produces no evidence at all.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Dense with international schools and with the in-home tutors who serve them, which is why diaries here fill first and why a family that needs a specific subject specialist rather than a nearby one gains most from online matching.

Dubai Media City and Knowledge Park

A working-parent corridor where sessions land after seven in the evening. Late slots are fine for recorded oral rehearsal and poor for accuracy work on cases, so the evidence cycle here is usually sequenced with writing at weekends.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Long school-bus routes mean a student may not sit down before five. A fixed five-thirty slot that survives the term produces twelve marked tasks; a four o'clock slot that collapses twice a month produces seven, and the difference shows in the review.

The Springs and The Meadows

Established villa communities a considerable drive from where language tutors cluster, so in-home quotes here carry heavy travel loading. The same budget online buys additional marking time, which is what actually generates evidence.

Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah

A long-settled European community, so German is more often a heritage language here than a classroom one. That produces the fluent-but-uncriterioned profile, where language scores are strong and message and conceptual marks are not.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Jumeirah Islands

Activity-heavy weekday schedules push sessions to weekend mornings, which are the slots language specialists lose first in the DP2 spring. Booking the weekend slot in September is worth more than negotiating the rate in February.

Dubai Investments Park and Green Community

Outer communities where the practical choice has historically been whichever tutor would make the drive. For a subject with as few Dubai specialists as German B, online delivery changes the pool rather than merely the price.

Mirdif and Rashidiya

A mixed-curriculum area with a strong British-school presence, so German is commonly a second additional language started late. Those students need the error-family diagnostic first, because their gaps are structural rather than general.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send two marked scripts before anything else

A written task with the teacher's annotations and, if one exists, a recording of an oral practice. Those two documents tell a German B tutor which error family is live, which is more useful than any report card and takes five minutes to read.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson run as a diagnostic

One lesson at no charge, one per student, with no card details taken. It runs the probes rather than teaching: case after two-way prepositions, verb position timed and untimed, the two past registers, adjective endings, and three minutes of unprepared speech.

  3. 03

    Receive the baseline in writing

Error families ranked in priority order, an estimated time to change each, and the one that will be targeted first. You keep that document whatever you decide next, and every later review is compared against it rather than against a memory.

  4. 04

Weekly task, weekly marking, three-week oral

One criterion-scored task a week with marking done outside the paid hour, an error log updated every session, and a recorded oral on an unseen stimulus every third week against the same criteria so the recordings remain comparable.

  5. 05

Six-weekly review that can say no

A short written note comparing like with like: what was targeted, whether it moved, what happens next. If the targeted family has not shifted in six weeks, the method or the tutor changes. The note contains no predicted grade and no percentage claim.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Artefacts, not impressions

Every six weeks you hold marked scripts with criterion scores, an error log, two comparable oral recordings and a written review. You can judge the engagement yourself rather than taking anybody's word, including ours.

Criterion-level marking

Language, message and conceptual understanding scored separately on every task. Two students with the same total mark often need opposite teaching, and a single number at the top of a script hides exactly that.

Error families, not error lists

German errors are systematic. Tagging each one by family turns thirty scattered corrections into one diagnosis, and a diagnosis has a time estimate attached to it rather than an indefinite plan.

Recordings kept and compared

Oral rehearsals on unseen stimuli at a fixed interval, marked the same way each time. A student in April watching themselves in November is the most convincing evidence available for an internally assessed component.

Reviews that are allowed to report failure

If the targeted error family has not moved in six weeks, the review says so and something changes. A reporting process that can only produce good news is not reporting.

Specialist matching over proximity

German B has few specialists in Dubai, and at Higher Level the right tutor is one who has read the two works your child's school chose. Teaching over live video makes that the selection criterion instead of driving distance.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How will I know whether German B tutoring is actually working?+

Ask for four things after six weeks: the marked written tasks with criterion scores on each, the running error log, two oral recordings made on unseen stimuli and marked the same way, and a written review comparing all of it with the week-one baseline. If the targeted error family's score has moved and the gain survived a task that was not about it, the teaching is working. If the only available answer is that your child seems more confident, you have no evidence either way, however good the lessons may be.

Why does my child make case errors in German that seem random?+

They are usually not random. In most Dubai scripts, case errors cluster after the prepositions that take either the accusative or the dative depending on whether movement is involved, rather than spreading evenly across all four cases. The diagnostic is quick: set a task that avoids those prepositions and see whether the error rate falls. If it does, the problem is narrow and typically takes two to four weeks of focused work on motion versus position, not a term of general grammar revision.

My child knows the verb goes to the end of a subordinate clause but still gets it wrong. Why?+

Because the rule is known and not yet automatic, which is a different problem with a different fix. The test is accuracy timed against accuracy untimed: a student who is correct when unhurried and wrong under pressure needs automation rather than explanation, and explanation has usually already happened for years. Automation means producing many short subordinate clauses at speed until the ordering stops requiring thought. It typically takes three to five weeks and it is boring, which is why it tends to get skipped in favour of something more interesting.

What are the Paper 1 criteria for German B and how are the marks split?+

In the current guide the single written task is marked on language, message and conceptual understanding, carrying twelve, twelve and six marks respectively. Confirm the allocations against your child's subject guide, since they are the IB's to revise. The important consequence is that fewer than half the available marks are grammar and vocabulary. A student scoring well on language and poorly on message is not weak at German; they have written the wrong kind of text for the audience and purpose the task specified, which is a different and much faster fix.

Should a German B tutor mark work inside or outside the lesson?+

Outside, and the answer changes the effective value of your hour by a third. Marking during a session consumes teaching time and produces a conversation rather than an artefact. Marking between sessions produces an annotated script with criterion scores that you can keep and compare, and leaves the paid hour for teaching the fix. Ask any prospective tutor directly whether marking is inside or outside the hour, because two quotes at the same AED rate can mean very different amounts of teaching.

How often should oral rehearsals be recorded for German B?+

Every third week, on a stimulus the student has genuinely not seen, under the real preparation conditions, and marked against the same criteria each time. Consistency is what makes the recordings worth keeping: changing the stimulus type between sessions produces four recordings that cannot be compared with one another. Recordings also change behaviour in a way that advice does not. A student who disputes that their word order collapses under pressure stops disputing it after watching ninety seconds of themselves doing it.

My child is fluent in German at home but scoring badly. What is going on?+

This is the commonest profile in Dubai's German-speaking community and it has a clear signature: strong language scores, weak message and conceptual understanding. Fluency hides nothing in conversation and everything in a scored task, because the IB is assessing whether the student produced the required text type for a stated audience and purpose, not whether they speak well. A single diagnostic written piece in the first fortnight identifies it, and the work that follows is text types and criteria rather than more German.

What does a useful six-weekly progress note look like?+

Four sections and no adjectives. What was targeted and why, the criterion scores for every task marked in the period, whether the targeted family moved and whether the gain survived a task that was not about it, and what changes next. At Higher Level it should also state how much of each literary work has been read and whether extract responses have grown beyond plot summary. What it must not contain is a predicted grade, which is the school's responsibility, or a percentage figure without a sample size, dates and method.

Can a tutor tell me what grade my child will get in German B?+

No, and a tutor who offers one is overstepping. Predicted grades come from the school, which has the full cohort, the assessment history and the moderation context. What a tutor can honestly report is what has been marked, what moved and what did not, with the scripts available for you to read. Treat any grade promise, score guarantee or published improvement percentage without a stated sample size and method as a reason to ask harder questions rather than as reassurance.

Which two literary works does German B HL require, and when should they be read?+

Higher Level requires two literary works, and the school chooses them, so there is no universal list. Ask your child's teacher for the titles during the first term of DP1 and give them to any prospective tutor before agreeing a rate, because a tutor working from different texts is rehearsing the wrong oral. Reading should be finished well before the spring: the DP1 summer is the natural window for the second work, since reading travels in a way that grammar instruction does not.

How many marked German tasks should a term produce?+

Around twelve if the slot genuinely holds weekly, which is the real argument for a fixed session time rather than a flexible one. A slot that collapses twice a month produces seven, and seven scripts across three months is too thin to show a trend reliably. Twelve lets you see a baseline, a targeted change, a retention check and then the next family, which is the full diagnostic cycle. The count itself is worth asking about at the six-week review, because it quietly explains most disappointing terms.

Does German B tutoring have to follow my child's school scheme of work?+

It should know it and not be bound by it. The school's sequence determines which assessments are coming and therefore what has to be ready when, so a tutor needs the scheme. But the error family costing your child marks may not be the topic the class is on, and a tutor who only ever follows this week's classwork is doing homework support rather than diagnosis. The honest arrangement is to run the error-family cycle underneath, and surface to the school's topic in the week before each assessment.

Is German B tutoring in Dubai available during Ramadan and the holidays?+

Yes, and the evidence cycle is one of the better reasons to keep something running. Sessions commonly shift to post-Iftar slots or to late weekend mornings during Ramadan, and because teaching is over live video a family travelling in the summer can hold the slot across a time-zone change rather than cancelling. The DP1 summer is also the natural window for Higher Level reading. What matters for evidence is continuity of interval: a recording every third week only means something if the third weeks keep happening.

What will a German B tutor not do with my child's work?+

A tutor will set tasks, mark them against the published criteria, annotate your child's own writing, maintain the error log, record and mark oral rehearsals, and supply model texts clearly labelled as the tutor's own for study. A tutor will not write or rewrite anything your child submits as their own, will not draft an Extended Essay or TOK essay, and has no role in the recorded individual oral itself. IB academic honesty rules put the consequences of malpractice on the student, so any offer of help with submitted work hands your family the risk.

Ask for the baseline before you buy the term

The useful first step in German B is not a lesson, it is a diagnostic that produces a document: error families ranked, a time estimate against each, and the one being targeted first. Book the free trial lesson, one per student with no card details taken, and that is what the hour will do. You keep the written baseline whatever you decide afterwards, and every review from then on compares against it rather than against anyone's recollection. Nobody here will predict a grade for your child, publish an improvement percentage, or touch work that has to be theirs. What we will do is show you the scripts.
