IB DP Mandarin B Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Mandarin B tutor in Dubai is usually hired for one of three reasons: characters written too slowly under exam conditions, a Paper 2 listening section that moves faster than the classroom recordings, or an individual oral that sounds rehearsed. IB Gram matches your child with a Mandarin specialist who teaches one-to-one over live video, scheduled around a Dubai school day in Gulf Standard Time. Lessons are online; the tutor works from the same subject guide, the same five themes and the same character set your child's school uses.

  • Mandarin B SL and HL, plus Mandarin ab initio for beginners
  • Simplified or traditional characters, matched to the school
  • Individual oral rehearsal recorded and marked against the criteria

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What Mandarin B actually assesses, and why Dubai families ask for help in DP1

Mandarin B is a language acquisition course. It is not for a student whose strongest language is Mandarin — that student belongs in Chinese A Language and Literature, and a Diploma coordinator in Dubai will usually say so during option sheets. Mandarin B assumes some prior learning, moves through five prescribed themes, and assesses what your child can do with the language rather than how much grammar they can recite. Three components carry the grade: Paper 1 is a single piece of writing in a specified text type, Paper 2 is listening plus reading, and the individual oral is marked by the teacher and moderated externally.

The split matters because it is where family expectations and the real exam diverge. Parents in Dubai often judge Mandarin progress by vocabulary lists and character worksheets, which is the part of the subject that is easiest to see. The examination rewards something else: whether a response is appropriate to its audience and purpose, whether the register fits a blog post rather than a formal letter, and whether a conversation keeps moving when the examiner asks something unscripted. A student can know eight hundred characters and still land in the middle band because the message was thin.

The second pressure is mechanical. Mandarin is written in characters, and characters have to be produced from memory with a pen, in a room, against a clock. Recognition and production are different skills and they decay at different rates. A student who reads a passage comfortably on a screen can stall in Paper 1 because three of the characters they need will not come back. This is the single most common gap we are asked to close, and it responds well to short, frequent, tested practice — which is exactly what a weekly fifty-minute session plus a daily ten-minute routine looks like.

The third is the oral. The individual oral in Mandarin B is worth a quarter of the grade and is the component students prepare for least well, because it feels like a conversation and therefore feels unpreparable. It is not. The criteria reward language, message and interactive skills, and interactive skills is where a Dubai cohort tends to lose marks — a long memorised presentation followed by one-word answers scores lower than a shorter presentation followed by a real exchange. Rehearsing that exchange with someone who is not the class teacher, and who will push back, changes the mark.

IB Gram works as a matching platform. You describe the level, the character set, the school's timeline and the component that is causing trouble; we propose a Mandarin specialist and run a free trial lesson — one per family, no card details taken — before anything is booked. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For a language subject that is a genuine advantage rather than a compromise, because the pool of Diploma-level Mandarin teachers inside any single Dubai community is small.

At a glance

  • Paper 1: one written task in a prescribed text type, 25% of the grade at both levels
  • Paper 2: listening and reading, 50% of the grade — the largest single block
  • Individual oral: 25%, marked internally and moderated by the IB
  • HL adds two literary works; the HL oral starts from an extract from one of them
  • Character production, not recognition, is where timed papers are usually lost
  • Ab initio is a separate SL-only course for near-beginners, not an easier Mandarin B

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mandarin sits in a different place in each programme, and the jump between them is the moment most Dubai students need support. These are the stages we cover, with what the Mandarin component looks like inside each.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Mandarin B sits in Group 2, language acquisition, at either Standard or Higher Level. Assessment is Paper 1 writing, Paper 2 listening and reading, and the individual oral. HL carries two literary works and a longer Paper 1 task. Students sit the course over two years, with the oral usually scheduled in the second half of DP2 and the written papers in the May session that Dubai schools use.

Dubai DP cohorts are unusually mixed in Mandarin. One class can hold a student who did MYP Mandarin for five years, a student who arrived from a Beijing international school, and a student who began in DP1 because the school required a second language. A tutor working one-to-one is diagnosing which of those three a student actually is before teaching anything.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language Acquisition runs in phases rather than levels, and a student finishes in one of six phases depending on where they started. The phase reached at the end of MYP5 is the single best predictor of whether Mandarin B HL is realistic. MYP assessment is criterion-based across listening, reading, speaking and writing, with no external paper, which is why the first timed Paper 2 in DP1 is a shock.

Several Dubai IB continuum schools run Mandarin from the primary years, so a DP1 class may contain students with seven years of exposure sitting beside students with two. Coordinators in Dubai tend to place generously; a tutor's first job is often to check honestly whether the placement will hold through DP2.

DP-COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Language B alongside the DP core

Mandarin B does not sit alone. The same student is writing an Extended Essay, building a TOK exhibition and completing CAS, and all three compete with character practice for the same evenings. Language subjects lose out in that competition because the work is incremental and nothing is due tomorrow. A weekly fixed session protects the time that would otherwise be reallocated to whatever has the nearest deadline.

Dubai school calendars put the heaviest internal deadline stack between November and February, which is also when Mandarin oral recordings are typically scheduled. Families who plan language support as a two-year drip rather than a pre-exam sprint come through that window in better shape.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and pre-DP Mandarin

Many Dubai students reach Mandarin B through Cambridge IGCSE Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language rather than through MYP. That route builds solid controlled writing and weaker spontaneous speech, because the IGCSE speaking component is shorter and more structured than the DP individual oral. Students arriving from it usually need oral stamina more than they need vocabulary.

British-curriculum schools dominate Dubai enrolment, so the IGCSE-to-DP transfer is common here in a way it is not in continuum-only systems. We treat the first term of DP1 as a bridging term for these students rather than assuming the IGCSE grade transfers as a level.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Group 2 is the part of the Diploma where Dubai schools offer the widest spread and the thinnest in-house specialist cover. These are the language courses we are asked for most, with what each one actually demands.

Mandarin B

HL and SL

The core of this page. Writing in a prescribed text type, listening and reading under time, and a moderated individual oral. HL adds two literary works and a longer written task. Marks are lost on register, on message development and on characters that will not surface under pressure rather than on grammar rules.

Mandarin ab initio

SL only

A separate course for students with little or no prior Mandarin, built on three themes and a defined syllabus of functions. It is not a softer Mandarin B: the assessment still includes a written paper, a listening and reading paper and an oral, and the vocabulary ceiling is lower but the accuracy expectation is high.

Chinese A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The right course for a student whose strongest language is Mandarin. Assessment moves to paper one guided analysis, paper two comparative essay, the individual oral on a global issue and, at HL, the HL essay. Students sometimes land here after being wrongly placed in Mandarin B, and the skills do not transfer directly.

French B

HL and SL

The same assessment architecture as Mandarin B, which makes it a useful reference point for parents. Five themes, Paper 1 text types, Paper 2 listening and reading, individual oral. French B students tend to lose marks on tense accuracy where Mandarin B students lose them on character production.

Spanish B

HL and SL

Widely offered across Dubai IB schools and often the fallback when a Mandarin placement is withdrawn. Shares the Language B criteria exactly, so a student switching in DP1 keeps the skill of writing to audience and purpose and rebuilds only the lexical base.

Arabic B

HL and SL

Relevant in Dubai beyond Group 2, because KHDA requires Arabic for all students in private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum. A student taking Mandarin B still sits mandatory Arabic lessons, and the two scripts compete for the same handwriting practice time.

English B

HL and SL

Taken by students whose schooling has been in another language, common in Dubai's Chinese, Japanese and Korean family communities. Pairs frequently with Chinese A, and the pairing is what makes a bilingual diploma possible for those students.

German B and Japanese B

HL and SL

Smaller cohorts, often taught by a single teacher per school, which is where availability problems start. These are the courses where a Dubai family is most likely to be told the school cannot offer additional support, and where online matching makes the practical difference.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Taken alongside Mandarin B and relevant to it: the TOK exhibition rewards precise expression, and students who have learned to control register in a second language often write tighter TOK prose. Graded A-E and combined with the Extended Essay for up to three points.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Included because of the timetable, not the content. In Dubai schools, Mandarin B and Maths AI often sit in the same option block, and a student dropping one to protect the other is a decision worth making with the subject requirements for their university shortlist on the table.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mandarin responds to frequency more than to length. These are the three shapes of support Dubai families use, and the one we recommend depends entirely on how far your child is from their oral recording date.

Weekly one-to-one, fifty minutes

The default for a DP1 or DP2 student working through the course. One live video session a week, with a short daily character routine between sessions that the tutor sets and checks. The session is split: a tested recall block, a text-type block aimed at Paper 1, and ten minutes of unscripted conversation in Mandarin so the oral is never cold.

  • Live one-to-one over video, screen shared for character stroke work
  • A daily ten-minute recall list, marked at the start of the next session
  • One Paper 1 text type practised to completion every fortnight
  • Running record of which characters have failed twice or more

Oral sprint block

Four to six sessions concentrated in the weeks before the individual oral. Each session records a full-length oral under conditions, marks it against language, message and interactive skills, and then rebuilds the weakest criterion. Students hear themselves, which does more for interactive skills than any amount of advice about them.

  • Full-length recorded oral in the first session as a baseline
  • Visual stimulus work at SL, literary extract work at HL
  • Unscripted follow-up questions, deliberately harder than the class version
  • Criterion-level feedback written out, not just spoken

Paper clinic before the May session

Timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice in the final term, marked and returned with the mark scheme logic explained rather than the answers handed over. Useful for students whose coursework is strong and whose timed performance is not, which in Mandarin is most of them.

  • Papers sat to the real duration, SL and HL timings respected
  • Listening practice at genuine speed, not slowed classroom audio
  • Reading sections attacked question-first to protect time
  • A written list of the three habits costing the most marks

Holiday intensive

Short daily sessions through the Dubai school breaks, when the timetable finally stops competing. Most useful for students switching route — ab initio to B SL, or B SL to B HL — and for arrivals mid-course who need a concentrated bridge rather than a weekly drip.

  • Three to five short sessions a week over two or three weeks
  • Character load front-loaded while there is no homework competing
  • Progress checked with a timed paper at the end of the block
  • Scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around family travel

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Mandarin B tutor in Dubai is usually hired to fix

  • Bring one recent written task, one oral recording if available, and the school's deadline calendar
  • Reading strong but writing weak means a retrieval problem, not a knowledge problem
  • Strong in class and weak under time means technique, which moves fastest
  • Placement mismatches are a school conversation, not a tutoring one

An IB DP Mandarin B tutor in Dubai is hired for a component, not for the subject. Families arrive with one of four descriptions, and the right first session is different for each. The first is slow character production: the student reads fluently and freezes in Paper 1. The second is listening speed: classroom audio has been comfortable, the past-paper audio is not. The third is a flat individual oral, usually a well-memorised presentation attached to a conversation that goes nowhere. The fourth is placement — a student in the wrong course, where no amount of tutoring fixes the structural mismatch.

Separating those four takes about forty minutes of diagnostic work. We ask for a recent piece of written work, a recording of an oral if one exists, and the school's assessment calendar. A student who scores well on reading comprehension and badly on written production has a retrieval problem and needs a daily routine. A student who scores badly on both has a vocabulary base problem and needs the themes rebuilt. A student who performs well in class and poorly in timed conditions has an exam-technique problem, which is the fastest of the four to shift.

The fourth case deserves honesty rather than a sales answer. If your child speaks Mandarin at home and has been placed in Mandarin B, they may be capped by the course rather than by their ability, and a Diploma coordinator can still consider Chinese A in DP1. If your child began Mandarin in DP1 with no prior learning and has been placed in Mandarin B rather than ab initio, the gap is structural and the conversation to have is with the school. We will say so in the trial lesson rather than sell two years of sessions against a placement that will not hold.

What a session does not do is replace the class. The tutor works from the same five themes and the same subject guide the school uses, follows the school's internal deadlines, and does not introduce a parallel syllabus. In a language subject that discipline matters more than in most, because a second set of vocabulary lists is actively unhelpful.

02

The Mandarin B assessment model, component by component

Mandarin B is assessed through two external papers and one internally assessed oral that the IB moderates. The weightings are identical at Standard and Higher Level — 25 per cent for Paper 1, 50 per cent for Paper 2, 25 per cent for the individual oral — but the durations and the demands are not. HL sits a longer Paper 1 task and a longer listening section, and the HL oral starts from an extract from one of the two literary works studied rather than from a visual stimulus.

The half of the grade carried by Paper 2 is the part Dubai families underestimate most. It is a receptive paper: listening first, then reading, both point-marked rather than criterion-marked. There is no credit for effort and no partial credit for approximately the right idea. The practical consequence is that Paper 2 improves through volume and timing rather than through explanation, and that it is the component a tutor can shift fastest in a short engagement.

Paper 1 is a single piece of writing in one of the prescribed text types, chosen from a small number of tasks. The task length for Mandarin is specified in characters rather than words, and the subject guide gives the range for each level — ask the school's Mandarin teacher for the current figure rather than relying on a tutoring website. What is stable is the marking: language, message and conceptual understanding, with conceptual understanding rewarding the student who chose the right register and format for the audience named in the task.

The individual oral is marked by the class teacher against language, message and interactive skills, then moderated by the IB. Because it is internal, its timing varies between Dubai schools by several months. Ask for your child's recording date in the first week of DP2; it is the single most useful date in the Mandarin calendar and the one families most often learn too late.

Characters: the workload nobody puts on the timetable

  • Recognition and production are separate skills; papers test production
  • Simplified or traditional must match the school and stay consistent
  • Stroke order protects speed, legibility and recall under exam pressure
  • A failed-twice list, tested weekly, is the mechanism that actually works

Character production is the distinctive labour of Mandarin B and the one schools cannot timetable enough of. Reading a character is recognition; writing it from memory is recall, and recall decays. A student who met a character in October and has not written it since will probably not produce it in May. This is not a measure of intelligence or effort — it is how memory behaves — and it is why a daily ten-minute routine beats a weekly ninety-minute session for this specific skill.

The second complication is the choice of character set. Mandarin B candidates write in either simplified or traditional characters and must be consistent across the paper. Dubai schools serving mainland Chinese families generally teach simplified; schools with a Taiwanese or Hong Kong intake may teach traditional. A tutor has to match the school, and a student who has been drilled by a tutor in the other set has been made slower, not faster. We confirm the set in the first session and record it on the match.

Stroke order is the part parents are most tempted to let go, and it is worth defending. Correct stroke order makes a character faster to write, more legible under pressure and easier to retrieve, because the motor sequence carries part of the memory. In timed conditions legibility is a mark issue: an examiner who cannot read a character cannot credit it. Screen-shared stroke work in a live session, where the tutor watches the hand move rather than only sees the finished product, is one of the few things online delivery does better than a worksheet.

The routine that works is unglamorous. A running list of characters that have failed twice or more, tested at the start of every session, with anything mastered removed and anything new added. Most students carry between forty and eighty live items at any time. The list shrinks through DP2 if it is maintained and balloons in March if it is not.

04

Ab initio, Mandarin B SL or Mandarin B HL: choosing the route that will hold

Option-sheet season in Dubai produces more Mandarin problems than the course itself does. Three routes exist and they are genuinely different courses rather than three difficulty settings. Mandarin ab initio is Standard Level only, built for students with little or no prior learning, and organised around a defined syllabus of themes and functions. Mandarin B assumes prior learning and works across five broad themes with no closed vocabulary list. Chinese A is for students whose strongest language is Mandarin and is a literature course, not an acquisition course.

The decision should be driven by evidence rather than ambition. For a student coming out of MYP Language Acquisition, the phase reached at the end of MYP5 is the most reliable indicator. For a student coming from IGCSE Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language, the grade matters less than the speaking component performance, because the DP oral is longer and far less structured. For a heritage speaker, the honest test is writing: fluent speech with weak character production points to Mandarin B, while strong reading and writing point to Chinese A.

Higher Level adds two literary works and a longer written task, and the HL oral begins from a literary extract. That is a substantial addition for a student who wants Mandarin as a fifth or sixth subject alongside two HL sciences. In Dubai, where Diploma option blocks are tight and the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education lessons also take timetable space, we see more students helped by taking Mandarin B SL well than by taking HL badly.

If a route change is needed, the window is narrow. Schools can usually move a student between levels or courses during the first term of DP1 and rarely after the oral has been scheduled. A trial lesson in September that identifies a mismatch is worth more than a year of tutoring that papers over one.

The individual oral, and the three ways Dubai students lose marks on it

  • Interactive skills, not vocabulary range, is where Dubai cohorts usually drop
  • Prepare all five themes on rotation, not the stimulus theme alone
  • Rehearse repair phrases so a pause does not become silence
  • Ask the school for the recording date in the first week of DP2

A quarter of the Mandarin B grade is decided in roughly twelve to fifteen minutes with the class teacher. The structure is a short presentation — from a visual stimulus at SL, from a literary extract at HL — followed by discussion on the stimulus and then broader discussion covering at least one further theme. Three criteria apply: language, message, and interactive skills. The third is the one that separates grades in a Dubai cohort, and it is the one least practised.

The first failure mode is the memorised monologue. A student who delivers four flawless minutes and then answers follow-up questions in three words has demonstrated preparation rather than interaction. Interactive skills reward understanding a question, responding to it, and keeping an exchange going without the examiner carrying it. The fix is unscripted practice with someone who will ask the awkward second question, which is hard to arrange inside a class of fifteen.

The second is thematic narrowness. The discussion is supposed to range across at least one theme beyond the stimulus, and a student who has prepared only identities will stall when the conversation moves to sharing the planet. We work the five themes as a rotating schedule through DP2, so that by the recording date every theme has produced at least one real conversation rather than one set of notes.

The third is silence management. Students lose fluency marks not when they do not know a word but when they stop. A handful of rehearsed repair phrases — asking for a repeat, rephrasing, buying a second — keeps the exchange alive and keeps the language criterion intact. These are coachable in two sessions and almost never taught explicitly.

Recording matters more than advice. A student who hears their own oral alongside the criteria usually diagnoses two of these three themselves, which is a faster route to change than being told.

06

What Mandarin tuition costs in Dubai, and what moves the number

Mandarin is a scarce-supply language in the Dubai tutoring market, and the rate reflects that rather than reflecting the difficulty of the subject. Published market rates in Dubai run from roughly AED 45-65 an hour at the budget online end, where EdFlik advertises, to AED 650 an hour for a premium named tutor, which is the figure BartyED publishes. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Bestimate's 2026 rate table for Dubai puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 and specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200-450 or above.

Those are market figures published by other providers, quoted here with their source and their date so you can check them. They are not IB Gram's price list. What we publish instead is the shape of the model: a free trial lesson before anything is booked, one trial per family, no card details taken, and a rate confirmed in writing with the specific tutor before the first paid session. For a language with a thin specialist pool, the rate is set by who is actually available at Diploma level rather than by a tier chart.

Four things move the number for Mandarin specifically. A Higher Level student with two literary works needs a tutor comfortable with literary discussion in Mandarin, which narrows the pool. A student needing traditional characters narrows it further. A session inside the 5pm-7.30pm Gulf Standard Time window — when every Dubai family wants it — prices differently from a 9pm or weekend-morning slot. And an oral sprint block in the four weeks before a recording is priced as specialist work rather than as maintenance tuition.

The cost worth putting beside those numbers is school fees. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package. Against a Diploma-year fee, a weekly language session is a small marginal addition — but it is still worth buying with a diagnosis rather than buying by the hour indefinitely.

Online Mandarin tuition against an in-home tutor in Dubai

The phrase parents search for is a home tutor, so it deserves a straight answer. An in-home Mandarin tutor in Dubai costs more per hour than an online one, because travel is inside the price, and the published bands above show the gap: roughly AED 180-350 for an in-home hour against AED 150-300 for a qualified online hour. Travel also shapes availability. A tutor who can reach Arabian Ranches at 5pm and Mirdif at 7pm cannot do both on the same evening, which is why in-home schedules are rigid and why cancellations cost more.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video, and home tutoring is a service we run only in India. We state that rather than leaving it to be discovered after a booking, because two competitors in this market route UAE parents to numbers in another country without saying so.

For Mandarin the online format is not a compromise. The constraint on in-home Mandarin tuition in Dubai is geography: your child gets a Diploma-level Mandarin specialist only if one lives within a reasonable drive of your community, and across most of the city there is no such person. Online, the pool becomes every available Diploma Mandarin teacher who can work in Gulf Standard Time. For a Higher Level student who needs literary discussion in Mandarin, that difference decides whether specialist support exists at all.

The format also suits the subject mechanically. Characters are written on a shared screen where the tutor watches the stroke sequence in real time. Listening practice plays at full quality through headphones rather than through a room. Orals are recorded and replayed against the criteria, which is the single most effective thing we do and which an in-home session rarely produces. Written work is annotated on the file and kept, so a pattern across six tasks is visible rather than remembered.

Mandarin B alongside the mandatory UAE subjects on a Dubai timetable

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are required in all Dubai private schools
  • Separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs are required, not optional
  • Mandatory-subject time is counted in 40-minute lesson units
  • Two scripts in one week means planning character practice around the Arabic timetable

A Dubai Diploma student taking Mandarin B is not only taking Mandarin. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and its published guidelines state that these requirements must be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Those lessons occupy real timetable space beside six Diploma subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS.

The arrangement is more specific than most families realise. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and social studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language. Mandatory-subject instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with schools permitted to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met.

The practical consequence for a Mandarin student is handwriting fatigue and competing script practice. A student maintaining Arabic script for a mandatory lesson and Chinese characters for Mandarin B is doing two kinds of production practice that neither teacher sees together. We plan the character routine around the Arabic timetable rather than against it, which usually means character recall in the morning and nothing script-heavy on a day with a double Arabic period.

One boundary is worth stating. KHDA guidance is clear that for the mandatory subjects the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, and that schools must ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects. If your child needs help with mandatory Arabic, that conversation belongs with the school rather than with a Mandarin tutor working outside the approved content.

09

Permits, academic honesty and what a Mandarin tutor may not do

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you
  • A tutor marks and rehearses; the student writes and speaks their own work
  • Syllabus documents and past papers come from the school, not from a tutor

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work, not unregulated work. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. Official guidance states that the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and that eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time through the MoHRE app, website and e-services system.

Anyone providing private tutoring in the UAE without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you — if a provider cites a specific figure, treat it as unverified. A separate rule applies in Abu Dhabi, where ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school; the MoHRE permit code of conduct carries a similar restriction. The practical reading for a Dubai family is simple: your child's own Mandarin teacher is the wrong person to hire privately.

Academic honesty in a language subject looks different from academic honesty in an essay subject, and it is still the line that matters most. A tutor may teach vocabulary and structures, model a text type, mark a practice task against the criteria, explain why a register is wrong and rehearse an unscripted conversation. A tutor may not write any part of a Paper 1 response that will be submitted, may not script an individual oral for a student to deliver, and may not produce work the student then presents as their own. The oral is internally assessed; a scripted performance is a malpractice exposure for the student, and expulsion risk is not worth a mark.

We also do not supply IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes as downloads. Those are the IB's copyright, and a tutor who offers to hand them over is telling you something about how they operate. The right route is the school's IB coordinator and the IB's own published material.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Mandarin teaching is not spread evenly across Dubai. These notes describe where the Diploma-level demand sits, which school clusters generate it, and what a weekday evening realistically looks like in each area.

International City and Warsan

Dubai's largest concentration of Mandarin-speaking households, anchored around the Dragon Mart trading community. Demand here is often the reverse of the rest of the city: students who speak Mandarin fluently at home but cannot write it at Diploma standard, and who are frequently mis-placed into Mandarin B when Chinese A would fit better.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

The densest cluster of IB Diploma schools in Dubai, and the area that generates most of our Mandarin B enquiries. Students here usually have continuous Mandarin from the primary years, so the work is refinement — register, message development, oral stamina — rather than foundation building.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment living, long lift waits and a 4pm school-run window that swallows an hour. Families here schedule Mandarin at 6.30pm or later, and the main constraint is that the student has already done two hours of homework before the session starts. Short, high-intensity character drills work better here than long lessons.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

A high proportion of relocating families, which means Mandarin B students who joined the course mid-stream from a different curriculum. The diagnostic question in this area is usually which phase of MYP or which IGCSE route they came from, because the gap is rarely where the school assumes it is.

Mirdif, Festival City and Al Garhoud

Served by established IB schools on the Deira side of the creek, with a commute that makes any in-person evening arrangement expensive in time. Mandarin sessions here are almost always scheduled online by preference rather than as a fallback, and a 7pm start is normal.

Emirates Hills, Arabian Ranches and The Meadows

Villa communities feeding the longest-established Diploma cohorts in the city. Mandarin B here is often a third or fourth language choice for a student already carrying two HL sciences, so the realistic ask is a maintenance session that protects the grade rather than a programme that raises it two bands.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Al Furjan

Fast-growing, younger family profile, and a school mix that is mostly British curriculum with IB appearing at Diploma level only. Mandarin students here tend to arrive from IGCSE Mandarin Chinese and need spontaneous speech work before anything else.

Dubai Hills Estate and Al Quoz

Newer school openings and a parent population that compares tutoring options carefully on price. The honest answer here is that a Mandarin specialist costs what the market charges for a scarce language rather than what a generalist charges, and the rate table further down this page sets out those bands.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

The Diploma heartland of Dubai, and where most Mandarin B teaching in the emirate happens. Students from these schools generally reach DP1 with continuous Mandarin behind them, so the tutoring brief is component-specific rather than remedial.

  • Dubai American Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha

Mirdif, Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

IB continuum schools on the Deira side, several running language acquisition from the primary years. Mandarin cohorts here are smaller, which makes one-to-one cover harder to find locally and online matching more useful.

  • Uptown International School
  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • Star International School Mirdif

Emirates Hills, Arabian Ranches and Sustainable City

Long-established and newer Diploma cohorts in the villa belt. Option blocks here are tight, and Mandarin B frequently competes with a second science or with Maths AA for the same slot.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Fairgreen International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai

Schools are named to describe the Dubai Diploma market this page serves; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

The first message that helps is specific: Mandarin B SL, DP1, simplified characters, oral in February, Paper 2 listening is the problem. That sentence lets us shortlist two or three Mandarin specialists rather than send a generic match. Add the school name if you are comfortable doing so, because the oral schedule varies between Dubai schools.

  2. 02

Send one written task and one recording

A recent Paper 1 style task and, if the school has produced one, an oral recording. Those two artefacts tell a Mandarin specialist more in ten minutes than a report card does in a term. We use them to decide whether the problem is retrieval, vocabulary base or exam technique before the trial lesson rather than during it.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, with a diagnosis at the end

One free trial lesson per family, no card details taken. The tutor runs a short diagnostic, then tells you plainly what they think the gap is and how many weeks they expect it to take. If the honest answer is that the student is in the wrong course, they will say so and you will have lost nothing.

  4. 04

Agree the rate and the slot in writing

Before the first paid session the specific tutor's rate, the session length and the weekly time in Gulf Standard Time are confirmed in writing. Slots inside the 5pm-7.30pm window are the ones Dubai families compete for, so a 7.30pm or weekend-morning start is often easier to protect across a whole term.

  5. 05

Run the weekly cycle and keep the failed list

Each session opens with a test of the running character list and closes with the next week's routine. Written tasks are annotated and kept, so by the sixth task the pattern is visible rather than remembered. You get a short written note after each session rather than a dashboard.

  6. 06

Switch the tutor rather than the plan if the fit is wrong

If two sessions in the match is not working, say so and we will propose a different Mandarin specialist. Language tuition depends on the student being willing to talk badly in front of someone, and that either happens with a particular person or it does not. Changing tutor early costs a fortnight; persisting costs a term.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The specialist pool is not limited by your postcode

Diploma-level Mandarin teachers are thin on the ground in any single Dubai community. Online matching replaces the question of who lives near Al Furjan with the question of who is available in Gulf Standard Time, which for Higher Level literary work is the difference between a specialist and whoever is nearest.

Orals are recorded and marked against the criteria

A quarter of the grade sits in one conversation, and most students never hear themselves have it. Each oral rehearsal is recorded, marked against language, message and interactive skills, and replayed. Students diagnose their own interaction problems faster than any explanation achieves.

Character work is watched, not just collected

On a shared screen the tutor sees the stroke sequence as it happens, which is where speed, legibility and recall are built. A worksheet returned the next week shows the finished character and hides the habit that made it slow.

Market rates published, with their source

The AED bands on this page are other providers' published figures, quoted with the provider and the date so you can check them. Three of the six competitor pages we examined for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars.

A diagnosis you can act on without us

The trial lesson ends with a view on whether the problem is retrieval, vocabulary, technique or placement. If it is placement, the useful next step is a conversation with the Diploma coordinator, and we will tell you that instead of selling a programme around it.

Clear limits on what a tutor will do

We teach, model, mark and rehearse. We do not write Paper 1 responses, script orals, or supply IB documents as downloads. In a market where one ranking site sells completed Internal Assessments, the boundary is worth stating in writing.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does an IB DP Mandarin B tutor in Dubai cost per hour?+

Published market rates in Dubai span a wide band. EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour at the budget online end, Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200, TutorChase shows AED 270, Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table puts specialist IB and IGCSE tuition at AED 200-450 or above, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Those are their figures with their dates, not ours. Mandarin usually prices towards the specialist end because the Diploma-level pool is small, and Higher Level literary work narrows it further. IB Gram confirms the specific tutor's rate in writing before the first paid session, after a free trial lesson.

Is Mandarin B the right course if my child already speaks Mandarin at home?+

Often not. Mandarin B is a language acquisition course, and a heritage speaker placed in it may be limited by the course rather than by their own ability. The honest test is writing rather than speech: a student who talks fluently but cannot produce characters at Diploma standard usually belongs in Mandarin B, while a student whose reading and writing are both strong is better served by Chinese A Language and Literature, which is a literature course with a different assessment model. Raise it with the Diploma coordinator in the first term of DP1, because schools can rarely move a student after the individual oral has been scheduled.

My child writes Chinese characters too slowly in timed papers. Can that be fixed?+

Yes, and it is one of the more reliable things to fix, because the cause is mechanical rather than conceptual. Slow production usually means the character is being recalled rather than written automatically, and the motor sequence has not been rehearsed recently enough. The routine that works is a running list of characters that have failed twice or more, tested at the start of every session, with ten minutes of daily practice between sessions. Stroke order matters here: a correctly sequenced character is faster and more legible, and an examiner who cannot read a character cannot credit it. Expect visible change over six to eight weeks, not one.

Should my child take Mandarin ab initio or Mandarin B SL?+

Ab initio is a Standard Level course designed for students with little or no prior Mandarin, organised around a defined set of themes and functions. Mandarin B assumes several years of prior learning and works across five broader themes with no closed vocabulary list. The deciding evidence is usually the MYP phase reached at the end of MYP5, or for students arriving from Cambridge IGCSE Mandarin Chinese, performance in the speaking component rather than the overall grade. A student beginning Mandarin in DP1 is almost always better placed in ab initio, and a placement that is too ambitious tends to surface in DP2 when it cannot be changed.

Does the Mandarin B listening section use audio at native speed?+

Yes. Paper 2 listening assesses comprehension of spoken Mandarin at natural speed across a range of text types, which is why students who have been comfortable with classroom audio can be caught out by past papers. Classroom recordings are often slightly slowed or heavily contextualised; examination audio is neither. The practical fix is volume and condition: listening practice at full speed, through headphones, with the paper in front of the student and the clock running. Standard Level listening runs about 45 minutes and Higher Level about an hour, and the listening and reading sections together carry half of the final grade.

What are the five themes in the IB Mandarin B course?+

Language B is built on five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation, and sharing the planet. They frame the texts studied, the written tasks and the oral discussion, and the individual oral is expected to range beyond the theme attached to the stimulus. That is why preparing one theme thoroughly is a poor strategy. We rotate all five through DP2 so that each has produced at least one genuine unscripted conversation before the recording date, rather than one set of notes. Your child's teacher will have mapped the school's units onto these themes, and that map is worth asking for.

Can a tutor help with the two literary works in Mandarin B HL?+

Yes, and this is the component where a specialist matters most. Higher Level Mandarin B requires two literary works, and the Higher Level individual oral starts from an extract from one of them followed by discussion. Supporting that means reading the works in Mandarin, discussing them in Mandarin, and rehearsing the extract-based presentation under conditions. The pool of tutors who can do all three at Diploma level is small in any single Dubai community, which is the main practical reason families here use online matching for Higher Level rather than Standard Level. A tutor teaches and questions; the student's own responses stay their own.

How much of the Mandarin B grade is decided by the individual oral?+

Twenty-five per cent, at both Standard and Higher Level. It is marked by the class teacher against three criteria — language, message, and interactive skills — and then moderated by the IB. Because it is internally assessed, its date varies between Dubai schools by several months, so ask for your child's recording date in the first week of DP2. Interactive skills is where cohorts here typically lose marks: a long memorised presentation followed by short answers scores lower than a shorter presentation followed by a real exchange. Rehearsing that exchange with someone willing to ask an awkward second question is the work that moves the mark.

Simplified or traditional characters — which should my child write in the exam?+

Whichever set their school teaches, used consistently throughout the paper. Candidates write in either simplified or traditional characters, and mixing them within a response is a problem. Dubai schools serving mainland Chinese families generally teach simplified; schools with a Taiwanese or Hong Kong intake may teach traditional. This matters when choosing a tutor, because being drilled in the other set makes a student slower rather than faster. We confirm the character set in the first session and record it on the match, so a replacement tutor later in the course inherits the same convention.

How many Mandarin sessions a week does a Dubai Diploma student usually need?+

One weekly session plus a daily ten-minute routine is the pattern that works for most students through DP1 and the first half of DP2. Mandarin rewards frequency over length, because character recall decays between contacts and a single long weekly block does not interrupt that decay. Two periods justify more: the four to six weeks before the individual oral, where a concentrated sprint block earns its cost, and the final term before the May session, where timed paper practice needs marking turnaround. A student who starts in March of DP2 can still improve Paper 2, which is the fastest-moving component.

Does an HSK level tell us where my child sits in Mandarin B?+

It gives a rough reference point and nothing more. HSK is a separate proficiency examination with its own level structure, and no official mapping to IB Mandarin B exists — anyone publishing a precise equivalence is inferring it. In practice an HSK result is useful as evidence of vocabulary breadth and reading comfort, which helps a tutor place a new student quickly. What it does not tell you is how a student performs against the Language B criteria, where register, message development and interactive skills carry marks that HSK does not test. The school's own phase or level assessment remains the better guide.

Can Mandarin sessions run after the Dubai school day and the evening traffic?+

Yes, and the timing is the main scheduling question rather than an afterthought. Sessions are scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and the window every Dubai family wants is 5pm to 7.30pm, which is also when the school run and the first wave of homework land. Families in Dubai Marina, Mirdif and Festival City often do better with a 7.30pm start or a weekend morning, because the slot survives the term instead of being cancelled twice a month. Online delivery removes a tutor's travel from the equation, which is what makes a late slot practical at all.

Does a private Mandarin tutor in Dubai need a UAE work permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. Official guidance states the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure as unverified. You can ask any tutor whether they hold the permit, and the application route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service.

Will Mandarin B count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency rules are set by the Ministry of Education, not by a tutoring provider, and they are curriculum-specific. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. No IB points threshold has been verified from the Ministry's own pages, so we do not publish one. Check your child's position with the Ministry or the emirate's attestation authority directly; it is a regulatory process, and no tutoring is required for it.

How do Dubai's shortened Ramadan school hours affect a weekly Mandarin session?+

Most families move the slot later, and it is worth arranging in advance. Dubai school hours shorten during Ramadan and evening routines shift around Iftar, which makes the usual 5pm to 7.30pm window unusable for several weeks. Because sessions are delivered online, moving a weekly slot to a later evening start or to a different day costs nothing in travel and can be arranged with the tutor directly. Character routines are the part to protect during that period: shortening the daily ten minutes to five is better than pausing it, because recall decay is what the routine exists to interrupt. Confirm the revised slot before the month begins rather than week by week.

Start with the component that is costing the marks

If you can name the component — slow characters in Paper 1, listening speed in Paper 2, a flat individual oral, or a placement that does not look right — we can usually shortlist a Mandarin specialist within a day or two. Send the level, the character set, the school's oral date if you have it, and one recent piece of written work. The trial lesson is free, one per family, with no card details taken, and it ends with a plain view of what the gap is and how long it should take to close. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the Dubai school day.
