IB DP Physics SL Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP physics SL tutor in Dubai spends less time on new physics than most parents expect and more on the three things that quietly decide the grade: the algebra underneath each equation, the handling of units and uncertainties, and knowing which formulae the data booklet supplies. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, so a session can sit after a Dubai school bus has actually arrived. The first lesson is free and starts with a marked extended-response answer.

  • Lessons are live, one-to-one and scheduled around the school timetable
  • Paper 1 is split into multiple choice and data-analysis questions
  • The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria
  • Investigation support is feedback on the student's own work only

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Physics SL is where mathematical slowness becomes a physics grade

Ask a Dubai Diploma student why they lost marks on a physics paper and the answer is usually about the topic. Look at the script and the cause is often arithmetic. A momentum question rearranged in two steps instead of one, a standard-form exponent dropped between lines, a sine entered in degrees when the calculator sat in radians, a gradient read off a graph without checking the axis scale. The physics was understood. The execution cost three marks, and three marks on a 44 per cent paper moves a grade boundary.

That is the first thing a Physics SL tutorial has to separate. The second is the handling of measurement. IB physics marks uncertainty and significant figures deliberately, not as a courtesy. An answer quoted to six figures from data given to two will lose a mark however correct the method. A percentage uncertainty propagated by adding where it should have been multiplied by a power loses another. Paper 1 now carries a data-analysis section built precisely around these skills, so a student who treats uncertainty as the dull bit at the end of a practical is losing marks in the written examination as well.

The third is the data booklet. Students are given a booklet of formulae in the examination, and a surprising number of Dubai candidates revise by memorising what is already printed while leaving unmemorised the things the booklet does not contain: definitions, the direction conventions, the derivations a question may ask for, unit prefixes, and which quantity in a relationship is held constant. Working out what is in the booklet and what is not is a one-session job that changes how a student revises for the rest of the course.

Around all of this sits the Dubai school year. KHDA oversees the emirate's private schools, which enrolled 387,441 pupils across 227 schools in 2024-25 with 17 curricula represented, and Diploma students in those schools carry mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside their six subjects. Add a bus route from Al Quoz to Mirdif and a physics tutorial has to compete for a narrow window of usable concentration. We would rather schedule one protected 90-minute block than three sessions a student sleeps through.

This page sets out what the course assesses, which mathematics it assumes, how uncertainty is marked, what the Higher Level decision actually involves, how practical work is handled when a school's apparatus differs from the one in the question, what the 24-mark investigation rewards, and what weekly support costs in AED in this market. It contains no IB session dates, because those could not be verified from the IB's own site, and no promises about grades. Where a figure appears, it carries either a source or a caveat, and where a date would help a family plan, we point to the school's Diploma coordinator instead of printing something we cannot stand behind.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 combines multiple choice with a data-analysis section
  • Paper 2 is short-answer and extended-response and carries 44 per cent
  • The scientific investigation is 20 per cent of the grade, capped at 3,000 words
  • Significant figures and uncertainties are marked as separate skills
  • Delivery is one-to-one over live video, never a visit to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics SL sits inside the Diploma, and the programmes below are the routes Dubai students arrive from. The useful question for a parent is not what each programme is but which physics habits it leaves a student with.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Physics SL runs to 150 taught hours including a 10-hour collaborative sciences project, and is assessed by two written papers worth 36 and 44 per cent and a scientific investigation worth 20 per cent.

Dubai Diploma students typically take physics alongside a mathematics course and one other science, which concentrates the graph-work and uncertainty skills into three subjects at once. Where a school teaches physics in the same block as Analysis and Approaches, a single tutor covering graphs, gradients and propagation can serve both, and we check for that overlap before recommending two separate arrangements.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Criterion-assessed science across five years, strong on investigation design and scientific literacy, lighter on the algebraic manipulation that Physics SL assumes from the first theme. MYP students usually write excellent method sections and struggle initially with multi-step calculation under time pressure.

A Dubai school running MYP to Year 11 sends students into Physics SL with good investigative instincts and little examination-timing experience, because MYP sciences are not externally examined in most settings. The first six weeks of tutorial work for these students is almost entirely timed calculation, not content, and the shift is usually visible in a mock result rather than in homework.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses combined with a career-related study and a personal and professional skills course. A CP student taking Physics SL sits the same papers, submits the same investigation and is marked on the same scheme as a Diploma candidate, with no concession for the different programme.

The Career-related Programme is offered by a limited number of Dubai schools, usually alongside engineering, aviation or business pathways. Those pathways make physics the most commonly chosen science in a CP timetable, and because placement blocks sit in the week, the tutorial usually lands at the weekend.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics SL is this page's subject. Families booking it frequently want one of the subjects below handled in the same weekly slot, usually because the two share a skill that is marked twice under different schemes.

Physics

SL and HL

Five themes covering motion, the particulate nature of matter, waves, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics. Paper 1 carries multiple choice plus data analysis; Paper 2 carries extended response. Marks leak at rearrangement, significant figures, uncertainty propagation and the direction conventions in field questions.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which is why AA students usually handle physics algebra faster. Shared tutorial work on logarithms, small-angle approximations, radians and calculus applied to motion saves time in both subjects.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Technology-active throughout and heavier on statistics. AI students taking physics often need extra work on algebraic rearrangement, since the calculator carries less of the load in a physics paper than in an AI paper.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Structure and reactivity themes with the same assessment architecture as physics: a split Paper 1, an extended-response Paper 2 and a 24-mark investigation. Uncertainty treatment and graph interpretation transfer directly between the two subjects.

Biology

SL and HL

Four themes assessed over two papers plus an investigation. Biology data questions test error bars, variability and simple statistics, so a student doing physics and biology meets measurement uncertainty twice and benefits from one consistent treatment.

Design Technology

SL and HL

Assessed by written papers and a design project. Students taking physics alongside it reuse mechanics, materials properties and energy analysis, and the project work raises the same authorship questions that the science investigation does.

Computer Science

SL and HL

Written papers plus a developed solution. Logic, binary representation and algorithmic steps overlap with the digital and circuit content in physics, and the two internal assessments can be sequenced so they do not fall in the same fortnight.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

SL and HL

Anatomy, exercise physiology and nutrition, assessed with a scientific investigation on the same four criteria as physics. Biomechanics in this course is applied mechanics, so a physics tutor can usually cover it without a second arrangement.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

An interdisciplinary course counting as a science or an individuals and societies subject. Energy, systems diagrams and quantitative data handling are shared with physics, and the data-based questions reward the same graph discipline.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition and a prescribed-title essay. Physics students often write well on the natural sciences as an area of knowledge because measurement uncertainty is a concrete route into questions about what counts as evidence.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three delivery patterns, all of them one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not make home visits in Dubai; in-home tutoring is offered only in India, and a Dubai family is served online instead.

Weekly calculation and script session

A 90-minute live session each week built on one timed extended-response question sat at home and marked before the lesson. Time in the session goes on the script: rearrangement speed, significant figures, uncertainty treatment and the command word the answer actually responded to.

  • One marked Paper 2 style question returned before every lesson
  • A running log of rearrangement errors separated from physics errors
  • The school's current theme used as the context, not a generic order

Measurement and data-analysis block

A short run of sessions on uncertainty, significant figures, graph linearisation and gradient uncertainty, aimed at both the Paper 1 data-analysis section and the investigation. The block suits a student whose physics is sound and whose practical marks are inconsistent.

  • Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty practised to the mark scheme
  • Linearising a relationship so a gradient means something
  • Maximum and minimum gradient lines drawn and compared

Investigation feedback sessions

Criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own investigation drafts, covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation as the four criteria are actually read. The student designs, collects and writes; the tutor comments.

  • Each of the four criteria addressed separately, with its mark allocation named
  • Dated record of drafts received and comments returned
  • No apparatus choice, data treatment or prose supplied by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The arithmetic underneath Physics SL

  • Rearrangement with the unknown in a denominator is the single commonest fault
  • Standard-form exponent errors usually cost the whole answer, not a mark
  • Vector components are often examined with the angle given to the vertical
  • Calculator mode errors appear and disappear without the student noticing

Most Physics SL marks that look like physics failures are mathematics failures with a physics label on them. The subject assumes a set of manipulations will be automatic: rearranging a formula with the unknown in the denominator, working in standard form without dropping an exponent, taking a square root of a product, converting a unit prefix mid-calculation, resolving a vector into components, reading a gradient from axes with different scales, and knowing when a calculator must be in degrees. None of that is taught in the physics course. All of it is assessed inside it.

A Dubai Diploma student taking Analysis and Approaches usually has these skills from the mathematics classroom. A student taking Applications and Interpretation often does not, because the calculator carries more of the load in AI assessments and the habit of manipulating symbols by hand gets less practice. That is not a criticism of either course; it is a diagnostic shortcut. The first thing a Physics SL tutorial should establish is which mathematics course the student is taking, because it predicts where the marks are going.

The fix is drill with a physics context, not a mathematics worksheet. Twenty rearrangements from real equations in the data booklet, timed. Ten standard-form multiplications where the answer has to be quoted to the right number of significant figures. Five vector resolutions where the angle is given to the vertical rather than the horizontal, which is how examination diagrams are usually drawn. Students find this dull for about two weeks and then notice that extended-response questions have stopped taking them twelve minutes each.

A parent can test for this problem without a tutor. Ask your child to make the acceleration the subject of a kinematic equation on paper, with no calculator, and time it. Under fifteen seconds is fine. Over a minute explains a great deal about a physics report.

Units, significant figures and uncertainties: marks that leave while the physics stays right

IB physics marks measurement discipline as a skill in its own right, and Paper 1 carries a data-analysis section built around it. The rules are small in number and unforgiving in application. An answer is quoted to the precision the data supports, usually matching the least precise measurement. A unit is part of the answer. An uncertainty is absolute, fractional or percentage, and the three are not interchangeable in a propagation.

Propagation is where most Dubai candidates lose marks, and the pattern is predictable. For a sum or difference, absolute uncertainties add. For a product or quotient, percentage uncertainties add. For a quantity raised to a power, the percentage uncertainty is multiplied by that power. Students who learn one of those three rules and apply it everywhere will be right a third of the time. In the investigation, the same error cascades: a wrongly propagated uncertainty makes a conclusion sound either overconfident or impossible to defend, and the evaluation criterion then has nothing to work with.

Graphical uncertainty is the other half. A student who plots points without uncertainty bars has removed their own route to a gradient uncertainty. The expected method is to draw maximum and minimum gradient lines consistent with the bars and quote the gradient as a central value with a range. It takes one tutorial to learn and it earns marks in both the written paper and the investigation, which is an unusually good return.

We practise this on the student's own data where possible. A set of numbers the student measured themselves carries a memory that a textbook table does not, and an evaluation written about one's own untidy results is more honest than one written about a clean dataset that never existed.

The data booklet hands over formulae and quietly assumes the rest

Candidates sit IB physics papers with a data booklet in front of them. It contains relationships, constants and unit information. It does not contain definitions, sign conventions, derivations, the assumptions behind a model, or any guidance on which quantity a question is holding constant. Students who revise by rewriting formulae they will be handed are spending their time on the one part of the subject that has been outsourced for them.

Working out the boundary is a single session. The student opens the booklet, and for each theme we list what is printed and what is not. The not-printed list is the revision plan: the definition of a field, why a particular approximation holds, what happens to the sign of a quantity when direction reverses, which graph shape corresponds to which relationship, the derivation a six-mark question might ask to be shown. That list is short enough to carry on one page and specific enough to test.

There is a second use for the booklet, which is as a question-reading tool. A student who cannot see how to start a problem can scan the relevant page for a relationship containing the quantity the question asked about. That is a legitimate examination technique and it is faster than recall for an anxious candidate. Practising it deliberately, against the clock, turns a blank five minutes into a starting point.

What the booklet will not rescue is a student who does not know what the symbols mean. Every relationship in it is a sentence in physics, and a candidate who reads one as a string of letters will substitute the wrong value into the right formula. We spend tutorial time reading relationships aloud as physics statements, which sounds childish and stops the substitution errors.

Standard Level or Higher Level physics: what the extra 90 hours buys

Physics SL runs to 150 taught hours and Physics HL to 240. The additional 90 hours are not a separate course; they are extensions within the same five themes, with a longer Paper 1 and a longer Paper 2 and the same 24-mark investigation. A Dubai student weighing the two is usually weighing time and mathematics confidence rather than interest in physics.

The honest comparison has four parts. Content: the Higher Level extensions add depth within each theme rather than new themes, which means a student who finds the Standard Level treatment of a topic hard will find the extension harder in the same way. Assessment: the papers are longer at Higher Level, with more questions on Paper 1 and a longer extended-response Paper 2, and the time pressure is real. Internal assessment: identical at both levels, 24 marks and 20 per cent, which is why the investigation is proportionally easier to protect at Higher Level. University requirements: some degrees specify physics at Higher Level, and that is the one part of the decision a tutor cannot soften.

The decision point that matters is the school's change window, usually in DP1. After that, moving down is administratively possible and moving up rarely is. A student stepping down from Higher Level to Standard Level mid-course keeps the work already done on the investigation, which carries over, and loses only the extension content. A student who wanted to move up has to cover 90 hours of extension material in whatever remains of the year.

The advice we give is to make the decision on evidence rather than ambition. Two timed Standard Level papers and one Higher Level paper, all marked, usually settle it in a fortnight. We will say which way the evidence points even where a family would rather hear the other answer.

Where Standard Level answers stop short: a command-term reading

  • State, describe and explain carry different mark structures, not different tones
  • Explain questions need a causal chain of at least two linked statements
  • Deduce questions award marks for reasoning shown from the given information
  • A command-term mismatch costs more over a paper than most topic gaps

A marked Physics SL script usually shows a student who knew the physics and answered a different question from the one asked. The command terms are the mechanism. State wants a fact with no justification and no credit for extra prose. Describe wants observable features without explanation. Explain wants a causal chain, which means at least two linked statements. Deduce wants a conclusion with reasoning shown from given information. Outline wants a brief account without detail. Discuss wants a balanced consideration. Suggest invites a reasoned proposal where no single answer is expected.

The marks follow the term, not the content. A student who writes four sentences for a two-mark state question has lost time and gained nothing, and the same student will then write one sentence for a four-mark explain question. Over a full paper, that mismatch is routinely worth more than any single topic gap. It is also the fastest thing to fix, because it is a reading habit rather than a knowledge deficit.

The tutorial method is mechanical and effective. The student highlights the command term before reading the rest of the question. For explain questions, they write the causal links as arrows before writing prose. For deduce questions, they state what was given before stating what follows. For discuss questions, they plan two sides in the margin. Three weeks of this converts into visible marks on a mock, which is why we put it early in a plan rather than saving it for revision.

There is a Dubai-specific wrinkle. Many students in the emirate are working in a second or third language, and command-term confusion is easy to mistake for weak physics. Separating the two is worth doing explicitly, because the remedy is different: language-pattern practice in one case, content teaching in the other.

06

Practical work when your school's apparatus is not the one in the question

  • Five questions answer most practical examination items regardless of apparatus
  • Resolution, systematic error and random error are marked as distinct ideas
  • A tutor can model apparatus the school does not own, using shared video
  • Practical hours and the collaborative project remain the school's responsibility

Physics SL includes practical work and a 10-hour collaborative sciences project, and an examination question may describe apparatus a student has never handled. Dubai schools are well equipped on the whole, but equipment varies: one school has light gates and data loggers, another runs the same experiment with a ticker tape timer, a third uses a phone application. A question about systematic error in a timing experiment is answerable from any of those starting points, provided the student has been taught to reason about the method rather than recall the particular bench they used.

That is the skill to build. For any described apparatus, a candidate should be able to name the quantity being measured, the instrument's resolution, the most likely systematic error, the most likely random error, and one change that would reduce each. Those five answers cover most practical questions regardless of equipment. They are also exactly what the investigation's research design and evaluation criteria reward, so the work is doing double duty.

Online delivery handles this better than parents expect. A tutor can share a video of an apparatus the school does not own, work through the resolution and error analysis on screen, and set the student to repeat the reasoning on an experiment they can actually run at home with a ruler, a phone timer and a stopwatch application. What a tutorial cannot do is substitute for the school's laboratory time, and we say so: practical hours are the school's responsibility and the collaborative project is run by the school.

Where a student has genuinely missed laboratory sessions, through illness or a mid-year move between Dubai schools, the honest sequence is to tell the school first. A teacher can often arrange catch-up access. A tutor cannot sign off practical hours, and any provider offering to do so is offering something that will not survive contact with the school's own records.

07

The scientific investigation and the collaborative sciences project: 24 marks and the authorship line

The scientific investigation is the internal assessment for Physics SL. It is worth 20 per cent of the final grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each, and capped at 3,000 words. The four criteria are research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The collaborative sciences project runs to about 10 hours, involves students from more than one science subject, and is not externally assessed, though schools use it for reporting.

Reading the criteria as a marker reads them changes what a student does first. Research design rewards a clearly stated research question with defined variables and a method that could be repeated by someone else. Data analysis rewards processing that is appropriate and shown, including uncertainty treatment, not a table of raw numbers followed by a graph. Conclusion rewards an answer to the research question, justified by the processed data and compared against accepted values or theory. Evaluation rewards specific, prioritised weaknesses with realistic improvements, which means naming the instrument and the effect rather than writing about human error.

The authorship boundary is firm and worth stating plainly. The investigation must be the student's own work and the school certifies it on that basis. A tutor may explain how each criterion is read, comment on a draft the student has produced, say that an evaluation is generic, and teach a technique on separate data the student then applies. A tutor may not pick the research question, process the student's data, restructure the document or supply text. Providers in this market sell completed internal assessments; an IB candidate who submits one risks a malpractice finding and the Diploma.

We keep a dated record of every draft received and every comment returned. That is partly for honesty and partly practical: if a school ever queries authorship, a timeline of the student's own versions is the only useful evidence anyone can produce.

What a Dubai family pays per week, by study pattern

Hourly rates are a poor way to budget for a two-year course, because what matters is the weekly commitment and whether marking sits inside it. Published Dubai market rates read in October 2026 run from about AED 33 to AED 65 an hour at the budget online end, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 180 to AED 500 for an in-home visit including travel, and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an IB specialist. Monthly packages in the same market include roughly AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Translate those into patterns and the decision becomes clearer. A single 60-minute session a week with no marking between lessons is the cheapest arrangement and the slowest to produce evidence. A 90-minute session with one marked paper per week costs more per week and generates a mark log, which is what a predicted-grade conversation needs. A fortnightly session plus marking suits a capable student who has drifted on one theme. An exam-term intensive of two or three sessions a week is expensive and short, and it is the pattern families most often regret starting too late rather than too early.

The travel premium is the one Dubai-specific variable in the table. An in-home rate carries the drive, and in a city where a 6pm crossing from Jumeirah to Mirdif can take fifty minutes, that cost is real for the tutor and gets passed on. It also narrows the choice to tutors who live within reach, which for a single named subject at a single level is a poor trade. A Green Community family choosing online picks from every Physics SL specialist whose hours overlap Gulf Standard Time.

On our own fees, the position is that they depend on session length and how much marking is included, and that the first lesson is free with no card details taken. We publish market bands so any quote, ours included, can be judged against something.

Scheduling in Dubai: school finish times, Ramadan, and who may legally be paid to teach

  • Mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies periods sit inside the school week
  • During Ramadan we shorten sessions and move them after Iftar rather than pausing
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years
  • No published fine schedule exists for unpermitted tutoring, so no figure should be quoted

A Dubai Diploma timetable is fuller than the subject count suggests. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit under KHDA guidance. Add a bus route and the usable window for a physics tutorial on a weekday is often ninety minutes wide. We ask for the timetable at booking and fix one protected slot rather than scattering sessions.

Ramadan changes the shape of the week rather than stopping it. School hours shorten, concentration in the afternoon is lower, and many families prefer sessions after Iftar. For a DP2 student whose written papers follow in the spring, the practical approach is to move the slot to the evening for the month, shorten sessions and keep frequency, and use the daytime for lighter review rather than new content. Summer is the opposite case: long blocks are available and most Dubai families travel, so we plan the summer pattern in May rather than in July.

On the legal side, a parent can check more than most providers admit. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The application route is MoHRE's own service, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, any specific amount quoted to you is unverified. An organisation with premises and staff in Dubai additionally needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit, so a claim of regulator approval should be accompanied by a permit number.

If no Physics SL specialist is free in the slot you need, we say so. The alternatives offered are the nearest available time, a specialist in another time zone whose hours overlap Gulf Standard Time, or nothing, with nothing charged. Physics at Standard Level is widely taught, so this is uncommon; it is more likely for an unusual recurring slot than for the subject itself.

Where we tutor

Where in Dubai our Physics SL students live, and what that does to the timetable

Lessons are delivered online across the emirate, so community matters for scheduling and for which school a student attends, not for travel. The notes below are about when a session can realistically start and finish.

Al Quoz and Al Safa

Central and close to several large school campuses, so buses discharge early and a 4pm weekday start is usually workable. Families here often prefer two 60-minute sessions over one long block, because weekday sport finishes late in this part of the city.

The Greens and Emirates Living

Mid-rise communities feeding schools in Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim. The practical constraint is parents arriving home around 7pm, so the written session note is what most families here read rather than attending the lesson themselves.

Palm Jumeirah

Long single-access commutes in and out, which makes early-evening sessions unreliable in the exam term. Weekend morning blocks for full timed papers work better here than squeezed weekday slots.

Motor City and Sports City

Communities with heavy weekday training schedules for students on sports programmes. Physics sessions here are often set at 7.30pm or later, and we keep the slot fixed rather than moving it, since late-evening concentration is fragile enough without a changing timetable.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Newer villa developments with school runs in several directions. Students here frequently attend different schools from their neighbours, so a shared revision group is rarely practical and the one-to-one pattern dominates.

Green Community and Dubai Investments Park

Further out, with the longest bus routes of any Dubai cluster we schedule for. A 4pm session is not realistic; 5.45pm is. Exam-term intensive blocks are generally set on Fridays and Saturdays here for that reason.

International City and Warsan

Dense apartment communities with students spread across Deira-side and Academic City schools. Shared study space at home is often limited, so we run the session with the student in headphones and the written note sent to a parent afterwards.

Discovery Gardens and Jebel Ali

Mixed enrolment across British and IB routes, with a steady stream of families moving between the two. The first conversation here is often about whether physics should be Standard or Higher Level rather than about a specific topic.

Dubai schools where students choose between A Level and Diploma physics

In these settings a Year 11 student picks between A Level Physics and Physics SL or HL, and the decision is usually made on mathematics confidence rather than on physics interest. We are asked about that choice more often than about any single topic.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the theme, the mathematics course and the timetable

Three facts shape the first session: which theme the class is on, whether the student takes Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and when the school bus actually gets home. All three go on the booking form so the first lesson is useful rather than exploratory.

  2. 02

Free first lesson on a marked answer

The student sits one extended-response question under timed conditions beforehand. The free session is spent on that script, separating physics errors from rearrangement errors from command-term errors. The written note afterwards names which of the three is costing most.

  3. 03

    Fix one protected weekly slot

We set a single recurring time around school periods, mandatory subject lessons and sport, rather than booking ad hoc. A fixed slot survives a busy term; a flexible one quietly disappears by the third week of a DP2 autumn.

  4. 04

One marked paper between every session

From week two a timed question or full paper is sat at home and marked before the lesson. Each goes into a log by theme and command word. The log, not an impression of effort, is what a predicted-grade conversation with a school should be based on.

  5. 05

Six-week review with three honest outcomes

After around six sessions we compare the log against the first script. The outcomes are continue, change focus, or stop. We write down which and why. Where the log shows no movement, adding sessions is the wrong answer and we say so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Mathematics faults are separated from physics faults

A script is read for three different causes before any teaching starts: physics understanding, algebraic execution and command-term reading. The three need different lessons, and treating all three as revision is how a term disappears without the grade moving.

Measurement is taught as examinable content

Significant figures, propagation rules and gradient uncertainty are marked in Paper 1's data-analysis section and in the investigation. We teach them to the mark scheme rather than as laboratory etiquette, because that is how they are credited.

A specialist rather than whoever is nearby

Delivering online means a family in Green Community or on Palm Jumeirah chooses from every Physics SL specialist whose hours overlap Gulf Standard Time. Choosing by postcode narrows a named single-level subject to whoever can drive there by six.

A clear line on the investigation

Support on the scientific investigation is criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own drafts, with a dated version history kept. No research question, data processing or prose comes from the tutor, because the student certifies authorship and bears the consequences.

Sourced figures and absent dates

AED bands on this page are published Dubai market figures from October 2026. Regulator statements come from KHDA, MoHRE and u.ae. IB session and results dates are absent because they could not be verified from the IB directly, and an unverified date is worse than none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much maths does IB Physics SL actually need?+

More than the syllabus states and less than a mathematics course. A Physics SL student needs to rearrange formulae quickly, including with the unknown inside a square or a denominator, work in standard form without losing exponents, resolve vectors using trigonometry, read gradients from differently scaled axes, handle unit prefixes mid-calculation and use logarithms for decay work. None of that is taught in the physics course; all of it is assessed within it. Students on Analysis and Approaches usually arrive with these skills. Students on Applications and Interpretation often need two or three weeks of timed rearrangement drill, after which extended-response questions stop consuming twelve minutes each.

Why does my son get the physics right and still lose marks?+

Three usual causes, and they look identical on a report card. First, measurement discipline: an answer quoted to more significant figures than the data supports, or a missing unit. Second, uncertainty propagation: absolute uncertainties added where percentages were needed, or a power ignored. Third, command terms: four sentences written for a two-mark state question and one sentence for a four-mark explain question. All three are mechanical and all three are fixable in weeks rather than terms. The way to find out which applies is to have one timed extended-response answer marked against the published scheme and the lost marks sorted by cause rather than by topic.

What is in the physics data booklet and what is not?+

The booklet supplies relationships, constants and unit information for every theme. It does not supply definitions, sign conventions, the assumptions behind a model, derivations a question may ask to be shown, or any indication of which quantity is being held constant. Students frequently revise by rewriting formulae they will be handed while leaving the unsupplied material unlearned. A single session spent listing, theme by theme, what is printed and what is not produces a one-page revision plan that is specific enough to test. The booklet is also a question-reading tool: scanning it for a relationship containing the quantity asked about is faster than recall under pressure.

Should my daughter move from Physics HL to Physics SL?+

Decide it on marked evidence inside the school's change window, usually in DP1. Standard Level is 150 taught hours against 240 at Higher Level, covering the same five themes with less depth, shorter papers and an identical 24-mark investigation. A theme that is hard at Standard Level will be harder at Higher Level in the same way, so the question is workload and mathematics confidence rather than interest. Two timed Standard Level papers and one Higher Level paper, all marked, usually settle it in a fortnight. The constraint to check first is university prerequisites, since some physics and engineering degrees specify Higher Level and no tutor can soften that.

How are uncertainties marked in IB Physics SL?+

As a separate skill with its own marks, in the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and across all four criteria of the investigation. The rules are compact. Absolute uncertainties add for a sum or difference. Percentage uncertainties add for a product or quotient. A percentage uncertainty is multiplied by the power when a quantity is raised to one. A final answer matches the precision of the least precise measurement. Graphically, uncertainty bars allow maximum and minimum gradient lines, and the gradient is quoted as a central value with a range. Students who learn one rule and apply it everywhere are right about a third of the time, which is the pattern a marked script reveals.

Does Physics SL close the door on an engineering degree?+

At many selective engineering faculties, physics at Higher Level is specified, so Standard Level can be a barrier at those institutions. It is not universal. Some engineering programmes accept physics at Standard Level with mathematics at Higher Level, some require a mathematics level and treat physics as recommended, and several universities inside the UAE publish programme-specific requirements that differ from one another. The practical step is to read the entry requirements on three named degree pages for the current admissions cycle before the DP1 change window closes, then confirm with each admissions office. General statements about the IB, including on tutoring sites, are not a substitute for the programme page.

Can online lessons cover the practical side of Physics SL?+

The reasoning side, yes; the laboratory hours remain the school's. A tutor can share video of apparatus a school does not own, work through resolution, systematic error and random error on screen, and set a student to repeat the reasoning on an experiment they can run at home with a ruler and a phone timer. For examination purposes that is what is assessed: naming the quantity measured, the instrument's resolution, the likeliest systematic and random errors, and one realistic improvement for each. What no tutor can do is sign off practical hours or substitute for the collaborative sciences project, both of which the school records.

What does the collaborative sciences project involve?+

It is about 10 hours of work inside the taught time for every IB science course, bringing together students from more than one science subject on a shared task with a scientific or technological focus. It is not externally assessed and does not carry marks towards the grade, though schools commonly use it in internal reporting and it sits in the same term as other coursework. Because it is organised and recorded by the school, a tutor has no role in it. Where a student has missed the project through illness or a mid-year move between Dubai schools, the first conversation should be with the school rather than with a tutoring provider.

How many weeks of Physics SL support does a DP2 student usually need?+

A useful block is eight to twelve weeks with one 90-minute session a week and a marked timed question before each lesson. That is long enough to produce a mark log showing movement across themes and command words, and short enough for a family to stop without a long commitment. Students rebuilding algebra and measurement skills often need two shorter sessions a week for the first month, then settle to one. In the weeks immediately before the written papers, families commonly move to two or three sessions built entirely around marked full papers. Beyond three a week, the limiting factor is usually sleep rather than teaching.

What does an IB Physics SL tutor charge per hour in Dubai?+

Published Dubai rates read in October 2026 sit in bands. Budget online providers advertise from roughly AED 33 to AED 65 an hour. Qualified online subject tutors are commonly quoted between AED 150 and AED 300. In-home visits, which include the tutor's travel across the city, run about AED 180 to AED 500. IB specialists sit around AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with premium named tutors advertised as high as AED 650. Monthly packages of about AED 799 for eight online sessions appear in the same market. Those are market figures, not our price list, and the variable that changes value most is whether script marking is included.

Can Physics SL sessions run after school finish times in Dubai?+

That is the normal pattern, and the realistic start time depends on the community rather than the school. Families in Al Quoz and Al Safa can usually manage 4pm. Green Community, Dubai Investments Park and Palm Jumeirah households are rarely settled before 5.45pm because of route length. Motor City and Sports City students on training programmes often need 7.30pm or later. We fix one recurring slot around the school timetable, mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education periods and sport, because a fixed weekly time survives a DP2 term and a flexible arrangement quietly stops happening by the third week.

How should Physics SL revision be scheduled around Ramadan?+

Shorten the sessions, move them later and keep the frequency. School hours shorten during Ramadan, afternoon concentration drops, and most families prefer lessons after Iftar. For a DP2 student whose written papers follow in the spring, the pattern that works is two shorter evening sessions rather than one long afternoon block, with daytime used for light review of already-taught material rather than new theme content. Timed full papers are better moved to the weekend for the month. We plan the Ramadan schedule a few weeks ahead rather than week by week, because evening slots fill quickly across the whole student group.

What may a paid tutor do with my child's physics investigation?+

Explain how the four criteria are read, comment on a draft the student has already produced, say when an evaluation is generic rather than specific, and teach a technique such as uncertainty propagation on separate data that the student then applies to their own. What a tutor may not do is choose the research question, process the student's data, restructure the document or supply text. The investigation is submitted as the student's own work and the school certifies that. Providers in this market sell completed internal assessments; submitting one risks a malpractice finding and the Diploma. We keep a dated record of drafts received and comments returned.

How can a Dubai parent verify a physics tutor's permit?+

Ask directly, and ask for the permit rather than a reassurance. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule, so treat any quoted fine figure as unverified. An operation with premises in Dubai needs a separate KHDA permit.

What if the only free Physics SL slot clashes with school?+

Then we do not book it. The options we offer are the nearest workable time outside school hours, a weekend block, a specialist in another time zone whose working hours overlap Gulf Standard Time, or nothing at all, with nothing charged. Physics at Standard Level is widely taught across the UAE, so a complete absence of availability is uncommon; the more usual problem is a specific recurring slot, such as 4.30pm twice weekly in term time, which cannot be filled locally. What we will not do is take the booking and allocate a tutor who has not taught this course at this level.

Book the free session around one marked answer

The quickest way to find out whether an IB DP physics SL tutor in Dubai will help is to have one extended-response answer sat under timed conditions and marked before anyone talks about packages. The free first lesson is spent on that script, sorting lost marks into physics, algebra and command-term causes, and it ends with a written note you can take to the school. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the school timetable and mandatory subject periods. If the note says weekly tuition is not what your child needs, it will say that.
