IB DP Math AA SL Home Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an IB DP Math AA SL home tutor in Dubai is rarely about rescuing a failing student. It is usually about a 5 that should be a 7, and nobody has shown the family which of the 160 examined marks are going missing. IB Gram pairs your child with one Analysis and Approaches Standard Level specialist, teaching live online in Gulf Standard Time. The record you receive is a per-topic mark ledger: which of the five syllabus topics has been tested, what it scored, and what the retest showed a fortnight later.

  • A per-topic mark ledger covering all five AA SL syllabus topics
  • Both papers practised separately, because only one permits a calculator
  • Exploration comments keyed to criterion letters, written on the student's draft
  • One named tutor for the block, with a free trial before any payment

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The Standard Level problem is usually precision, not understanding

Standard Level mathematics has a reputation in Dubai staffrooms that does not survive contact with a mark scheme. Analysis and Approaches SL is examined across two written papers of 80 marks each, ninety minutes apiece, each worth 40 per cent of the grade, with a twenty-mark exploration making up the rest. There is no Paper 3 at Standard Level. That smaller structure concentrates the risk rather than reducing it: a careless ten minutes on a single 90-minute paper costs a larger share of the final grade than the same ten minutes would at Higher Level.

The students we are asked to help at this level almost never fail to understand the mathematics. They understand it and cannot reliably produce it on demand. A typical profile: comfortable in lessons, accurate on homework done with a calculator and no clock, then five or six marks adrift on each exercise under examination conditions. Multiply that by two papers and the 7 becomes a 5. The cause is never a single thing, and the only way to find out which things are operating is to mark a complete paper properly and count.

That is why the first deliverable on this page is a ledger rather than a lesson plan. The five topics in the AA SL guide carry different recommended teaching hours: number and algebra around nineteen, functions around twenty-one, geometry and trigonometry around twenty-five, statistics and probability around twenty-seven, and calculus around twenty-eight. Those hours are a reasonable proxy for where the marks live. We test each topic, record the score, teach into the lowest, then retest and record again. A parent can read the movement without reading the mathematics.

Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video with the student's handwriting visible to the tutor. IB Gram does not operate home visits in Dubai; a tutor arriving at a UAE address is not something we sell, and in-home work is a service we run only in India. The practical gain for a Standard Level student is availability. SL maths candidates outnumber Higher Level candidates in most Dubai schools, the demand clusters in the same two evening hours, and the families who lose out are the ones whose shortlist was limited to tutors able to drive to their community before seven.

Dubai's scale makes the subject-match problem counter-intuitive. KHDA counted 227 private schools and 387,441 pupils in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula, with the IB at 7 per cent of enrolment. A large city total still leaves many schools with a single Standard Level maths class per year group, taught by one teacher with thirty other students to think about. The gap a tutor fills is not knowledge of the subject. It is attention to this student's particular pattern of lost marks, recorded in a form the family can check.

At a glance

  • AA SL has two papers only: 80 marks and 40 per cent each, ninety minutes each
  • Paper 1 permits no calculator; Paper 2 assumes a graphic display calculator throughout
  • The exploration is marked out of 20 and carries 20 per cent of the final grade
  • Standard Level omits proof by induction, implicit differentiation and the harder integration
  • Specialist IB tuition in Dubai is published at roughly AED 200-450 per hour
  • All lessons are delivered online; no tutor is sent to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

AA SL sits at the end of a long run-up, and the habits that decide its grade are visible years earlier. Here is what each IB programme contributes to a Standard Level maths outcome, and the Dubai-specific wrinkle at each stage.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Every Diploma candidate takes one of the four mathematics courses, and AA SL is the most commonly chosen in schools with a strong academic intake that are not pushing everyone towards Higher Level. The guide recommends 150 teaching hours. Thirty of those are allocated to the exploration, which means the examined content is covered in about 120 hours spread across two years.

Dubai schools enter the great majority of candidates for the May session. Session windows, upload deadlines and results dates are published by the IB and are revised from time to time, so the only safe source for your child's dates is the school's Diploma coordinator. Any tutoring plan should be built backwards from the school's internal deadlines, which almost always fall earlier than the external ones.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP mathematics reports against four criteria rather than against a percentage, and the criterion that predicts Standard Level success is criterion C, communicating. Students who lose criterion C marks for unexplained steps are the same students who later lose method marks on Paper 1, because the underlying habit is identical: the answer is in their head and only the answer reaches the page.

In Dubai's continuum schools a child can move from MYP mathematics into AA SL without ever sitting an externally set paper. The first formal timed experience is often a DP1 internal examination, and the shock of it is frequently misread as a content problem when it is a timing and presentation problem.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Primary mathematics in the PYP is organised around inquiry and conceptual understanding rather than a topic list. The skills that resurface in AA SL Paper 1 are arithmetic fluency and confidence with fractions, indices and negative numbers, because Paper 1 withdraws the calculator and leaves those exposed in every question that involves an exact value.

KHDA inspects Dubai primary provision annually and reports attainment and progress separately. For a parent thinking ahead, the mathematics progress judgement in a Year 5 or Year 6 report is a more useful early signal than the overall school band, because it describes the cohort this child is actually in.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme combines at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study, and mathematics is sometimes among them. A CP student taking AA SL sits exactly the same papers as a full Diploma candidate, so the tuition is identical in content even though the surrounding qualification is not.

The CP is offered by a small number of UAE schools and is less familiar to parents here than the full Diploma. If your child is on this route, confirm with the school which Diploma courses are being examined and at which level, because a timetable label is not always the same as the registered course.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Standard Level maths is rarely the only subject in play. These are the courses most often requested alongside AA SL by Dubai families, with the component that usually decides each grade.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL

Two 90-minute papers of 80 marks each plus the exploration. Trigonometric equations within a stated domain, the chain and product rules, binomial and normal distributions, and kinematics derived from calculus account for a disproportionate share of lost marks at this level.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL

Adds a one-hour Paper 3 of 55 marks, proof by induction, complex numbers and considerably more calculus, with 240 recommended hours against 150. A student moving down from HL to SL keeps the exploration and loses the third paper, which changes revision priorities immediately.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL

The calculator-permitted route, with roughly a third of its hours in statistics and probability. Students who chose AA SL because it sounded more respectable and who dislike algebra are often in the wrong course, and the marked evidence makes that visible quickly.

Biology

HL and SL

Under the 2023 syllabus, Paper 1A multiple choice and Paper 1B data analysis together carry 36 per cent, Paper 2 carries 44 per cent, and the scientific investigation 20 per cent. The statistics in Paper 1B draws on the same data-handling skills AA SL examines, so the two subjects reinforce each other.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Logarithms for pH, rate equations and equilibrium calculations overlap directly with AA SL content. A student who is secure in SL maths and still losing chemistry calculation marks is usually tripping on units and significant figures rather than on the mathematics.

Business Management

HL and SL

Quantitative tools including break-even analysis, investment appraisal and ratio work. AA SL students handle these easily; the marks they lose sit in the extended-response questions that require evaluation against a named business context rather than calculation.

Economics

HL and SL

Three internally assessed commentaries on published articles, plus written papers. HL adds a quantitative paper that an AA SL student should find straightforward. Diagram accuracy and precise definitions, not arithmetic, are where the grade is usually decided.

Psychology

HL and SL

HL includes research methodology and simple inferential statistics, which is where students without mathematical confidence stall. The overlap with AA SL statistics and probability is real and underused by students who treat the two subjects as unrelated.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis of unseen texts, Paper 2 comparative essay, and an individual oral. Included here because Dubai families frequently book maths and English together, and because the individual oral is the component most often left until too late.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The format should follow the ledger. A student leaking marks to precision needs something different from a student who has not covered a topic, and the arrangement can change mid-block when the evidence changes.

Weekly sixty-minute session with marking between lessons

The standard arrangement for a Standard Level student working through a two-year course. Sixty minutes is sufficient at SL because the papers are ninety minutes and questions are shorter than at Higher Level. The marking happens between sessions, so lesson time is spent on the diagnosis rather than on the tutor reading in silence.

  • One topic from the ledger per fortnight, tested and retested
  • A question set returned marked before the next lesson
  • Short, specific parent updates rather than general reassurance

Paired paper sessions

Two sessions a week in the term before the examinations, one devoted to non-calculator work and one to calculator technique. Splitting them matters because the two AA SL papers reward different habits, and a student who revises everything with a calculator to hand is rehearsing only half the examination.

  • A non-calculator session on exact values, surds, logarithms and by-hand calculus
  • A calculator session on graph screens, distributions and solver routines
  • Both sessions timed, so pacing is practised rather than discussed

Exploration review sessions

A short block scheduled around the school's internal exploration deadlines. The student submits what they have, the tutor reads it against the five criteria and returns comments, and the session is spent on questions the student has to answer themselves. Nothing is inserted into the document by the tutor.

  • Criterion-by-criterion comments with the mark allocation stated
  • Early triage of a research question that cannot carry twenty marks
  • A written record of the advice given, available to the school if asked

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What parents in Dubai are really buying when they search for an AA SL home tutor

An IB DP Math AA SL home tutor in Dubai is advertised across this market from about AED 150 an hour for a general online tutor to AED 500 for an in-home specialist in an examination year. IB Gram delivers Standard Level support as one-to-one tuition over live video to every community in the emirate. No tutor is sent to a UAE address; that service exists only in our India operation, and we state it before a payment is discussed rather than after.

The home-tutoring question deserves a real answer because it is a reasonable question. A tutor in the room removes the possibility of a student quietly not working, supplies social pressure that some teenagers genuinely need, and makes it easy for a parent to see that a lesson happened. Against that, in-home delivery narrows the choice of tutor to whoever can physically arrive, charges for the travel whether or not the invoice itemises it, and confines sessions to the two hours either side of six in the evening when every other family wants them too.

For Standard Level mathematics specifically, the thing in shortest supply is not presence. It is someone who will mark a full paper against the published mark scheme and tell you which of the five topics is actually costing marks. That work happens between lessons and nobody travels for it. A tutor spending ninety minutes a day in Dubai traffic has less of that time available, not more, and the marking is the first thing to be dropped when an evening runs late.

There is a second-order effect that families notice by about week four. Because an online tutor's working day is not fragmented by driving, the same tutor can hold a slot at 16:30 on a Tuesday and 20:00 on a Thursday without renegotiating. For a Diploma student whose week already contains six subjects, Theory of Knowledge, service commitments and the mandatory UAE subjects, that flexibility is what keeps a weekly arrangement alive through the spring.

02

Where the 150 hours go: the five AA SL topics and what each one costs

The Analysis and Approaches guide allocates its recommended teaching hours unevenly across the five syllabus topics, and that allocation is the most useful planning document a tutor has. At Standard Level the examined content occupies roughly 120 hours, with another thirty notionally reserved for the exploration. Calculus and statistics and probability take the largest shares, followed by geometry and trigonometry, then functions, then number and algebra.

The hour allocation is not the same as the mark allocation, and treating it as such is a common planning error. Number and algebra carries the fewest hours and appears in nearly every question on Paper 1, because sequences, logarithms, surds and binomial expansion are the tools other topics are built from. A student weak in number and algebra does not lose a slice of the paper proportional to its teaching hours; they lose marks everywhere, which is why the ledger tests it first.

Statistics and probability behaves in the opposite way. It carries a large share of the hours, sits mostly on Paper 2 where a calculator is permitted, and is the topic where marks are most quickly recoverable, because much of it is procedural once the right calculator routine is known. A student six weeks from the examinations with weak statistics is in a better position than one with weak algebra, and a plan that does not distinguish between the two wastes the time available.

Calculus is where Standard Level students most often believe they are fine and are not. Differentiation of composite functions, the product rule applied twice, definite integration with a substitution, and kinematics questions that require reading which quantity is being asked for: these are the recurring losses. They respond well to short, repeated, timed practice rather than to extended explanation, which is a scheduling fact as much as a teaching one.

03

Two papers, 80 marks each, two completely different habits

Paper 1 and Paper 2 at Standard Level carry identical marks and identical weight, which encourages students to prepare for them identically. That is the single most expensive revision mistake available at this level. Paper 1 permits no calculator of any kind. Paper 2 assumes a graphic display calculator and is written on that assumption, with questions whose numbers would be unreasonable by hand.

A non-calculator paper examines things a calculator normally conceals. Exact values in surd or logarithmic form. Trigonometric values from the unit circle. Integration performed rather than evaluated numerically. Arithmetic with fractions inside an algebraic manipulation. Students who have done two years of homework with a calculator within reach are not weak at this content; they have simply never had to produce it unaided, and the first time they try is in an examination hall.

A calculator paper examines a separate skill set that is also rarely taught explicitly: knowing which routine answers the question, reading a graph window correctly, choosing sensible bounds, recording the inputs so that method marks survive an incorrect output, and knowing when the calculator's answer is implausible. We have seen students lose six marks on a single Paper 2 question because a distribution was entered with the wrong parameter order and the resulting number was never sanity-checked.

The practical consequence for a weekly arrangement is that the two papers need separate sessions in the term before the examinations. One session runs non-calculator work under clock; the other runs calculator technique with the device the student will actually take into the hall, not a different model borrowed from a sibling. Any tutor who revises both papers together at Standard Level is halving the value of the hour.

04

The five places AA SL candidates leak marks, in order of cost

First, trigonometric equations solved without respecting the stated domain. A question asking for all solutions between zero and two pi expects more than one answer, and the second and third solutions are each worth a mark. Students who solve correctly and stop after the principal value lose those marks in every paper, and the fix is a reading habit rather than any new mathematics. This single error pattern is the most common recurring loss we record in Standard Level ledgers.

Second, unstated domains and ranges in function questions. A transformation described without its domain, an inverse found without its restricted domain, a quadratic whose range is asserted rather than justified: each is a mark the mark scheme awards for a line the student knows but did not write. Third, the chain rule inside a product or quotient, where the differentiation is attempted in one step and one of the two required derivatives quietly disappears.

Fourth, distribution parameters entered into a calculator in the wrong order and never checked. A normal distribution problem with mean and standard deviation transposed produces a plausible-looking probability, and a student who does not estimate first has no way of noticing. Fifth, pacing. Eighty marks in ninety minutes is close to one mark a minute, and students who spend fifteen minutes on a five-mark question at the start of Paper 1 arrive at the last page with nothing left.

None of these five is a knowledge problem, which is why reteaching the syllabus does not fix them, and why a student can be told repeatedly that they understand the material while their grade does not move. They are habits, each with a specific correction, and they are visible in a marked script within an hour of the student sitting one. That is the argument for marking a baseline paper in week one rather than starting with a topic.

05

The exploration at Standard Level: the same twenty marks, a different ceiling

The mathematical exploration is identical in structure at Standard and Higher Level: an independent piece of mathematics, twelve to twenty pages, marked out of twenty against five criteria, contributing twenty per cent of the final grade. What differs is the expectation under criterion E, use of mathematics, which carries six of the twenty marks and asks that the mathematics be commensurate with the level studied. A Standard Level student is not penalised for using Standard Level mathematics, and this is a liberating fact that most students hear far too late.

The practical effect is that topic selection at Standard Level should prize depth over ambition. An exploration that applies the normal distribution carefully to data the student gathered, with genuine reflection on what the model missed, scores better than one that reaches for a technique from the Higher Level syllabus and handles it clumsily. Criterion D, reflection, is worth three marks and is the single cheapest improvement available, because most drafts contain no reflection at all until the final page.

Criterion C, personal engagement, is also worth three marks and is misunderstood more than any other. It is not awarded for declaring interest in the topic. It is awarded for evidence of independent thought: data the student collected, a question they formulated, a decision they made and justified. The two communication criteria, A and B, carry four marks each and reward structure, defined notation and consistency of symbols, all of which are checkable by the student against their own draft before anyone else reads it.

The boundaries of legitimate help are not negotiable and we set them out in writing. The exploration must be entirely the student's own work. A tutor may discuss what makes a question workable, read a submitted draft, comment against the criteria, identify unsupported claims and explain what each criterion rewards. A tutor may not supply sentences, rework paragraphs or provide mathematics to be pasted in. Some providers in this market sell finished coursework outright; the malpractice consequence lands on the candidate.

06

The fortnightly review, written for a parent who is not a mathematician

Evidence is useless if it cannot be read. The review a parent receives every fortnight has three parts and fits on one screen. A line naming the topic worked on and the ledger movement, for instance that geometry and trigonometry went from eleven out of twenty to sixteen out of twenty on a comparable retest. The marked work itself, annotated in mark-scheme wording. And one sentence naming what happens next and why.

What the review deliberately avoids is adjectives. "Good progress" and "working hard" are not measurements and cannot be checked a month later. A ledger entry can: it names a topic, a date, a score out of a stated total, and a retest. If the retest did not move, the review says so, which is uncomfortable and far more useful than a positive message that defers the problem to the summer.

The review also records what the student did not do. Unattempted question sets are information, not a reason for a complaint. A student who has not sat the practice paper three weeks running is telling you something about the timetable, the workload or the arrangement itself, and the right response may be to change the slot rather than to apply pressure. This is particularly common in February, when internal assessment deadlines in several subjects land in the same fortnight.

At the end of a block the first and last baseline papers are compared under identical conditions, and that comparison is the only honest measure of whether the arrangement worked. No tutor can promise a grade, and anyone in this market who does should be treated with real scepticism. What we will commit to is that the evidence is dated, that it is in front of you, and that a block which is not working is visible by the sixth week rather than in August.

AED rates for Standard Level maths in Dubai, and what an in-home visit adds

Most pages ranking for this query publish no price. Of the six competitor pages we examined closely, three quote nothing at all and two quote in US dollars. The table below gives the AED market position for Standard Level maths tuition in Dubai with the source of each band. These are market rates and not an IB Gram price list; our own arrangement begins with a free trial lesson, after which a quote reflects the level, the components in play and the weeks remaining.

Standard Level generally prices below Higher Level for a defensible reason: the tutor pool is larger. A good AA SL tutor is a good mathematics teacher, whereas a good AA HL tutor must also be confident with a Paper 3 that many never teach. Parents being quoted Higher Level rates for Standard Level work should ask what the premium buys, and a straight answer is a reasonable expectation.

An in-home visit adds between roughly AED 50 and AED 200 an hour over an equivalent online session in this market, and the addition is travel. It is not a quality premium and should not be presented as one. What it buys is physical presence, which is worth paying for in specific circumstances: a younger student who will not work unsupervised, a household where a shared device makes online delivery unreliable, or a learner for whom a screen is a genuine obstacle. For a sixteen-year-old working on trigonometric equations, those circumstances usually do not apply.

For context on the family budget, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run from roughly AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for examination-year specialist support.

Does Standard Level maths close doors? Equivalency, universities and the honest answer

Parents choosing between Standard and Higher Level mathematics in Dubai are usually asking two separate questions and getting them tangled. The first is about university prerequisites, which are set by individual universities and faculties and change. The second is about UAE Ministry of Education equivalency, which is a separate administrative process with published requirements for some curricula and, for the IB, no figure we are prepared to state without reading it on the Ministry's own site.

On prerequisites, the pattern is consistent enough to be useful. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics degrees commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, and often at Higher Level. Medicine, life sciences and most business and humanities programmes rarely require Higher Level mathematics at all, and a strong Standard Level grade is frequently preferred to a weak Higher Level one. The only reliable source is the admissions page of each named university for the year of entry, and that is where a family should look rather than at a tutoring site.

On equivalency, the British-track requirements are published and specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. The American track specifies SAT Mathematics of at least 450, and English evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section. For the IB there is no points threshold published in the source we read, so we publish none. One ranking competitor states a wrong IGCSE subject count, and inheriting that error would be worse than saying nothing.

Nothing about tutoring is required for equivalency, and no tutor performs or guarantees it. The process belongs to the Ministry of Education and the emirate attestation channels, and a page that implies otherwise is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory procedure. What a tutor can legitimately do is make sure the grade your child submits is the best one they can produce, and tell you plainly when a level change would serve the application better than another term of struggle.

Where we tutor

Where our AA SL students live in Dubai

Session timing is the single most practical difference between Dubai communities, and it is usually what decides whether a weekly arrangement survives past February. These are the areas we are asked about most for Standard Level maths.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Jumeirah Village Triangle

A young, dense, apartment-heavy area whose Diploma candidates travel out to school in several directions. Sessions commonly start at 18:00 or later, after the bus run home, which is precisely the slot in-home tutors find hardest to fill.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Families here are often choosing between a tutor who can reach them and a tutor who teaches the right course. The metro-adjacent location helps with school commutes and does nothing for evening tutoring traffic on the Expo road corridor.

The Springs, The Lakes and The Greens

Established villa communities feeding several British and IB schools in the Al Barsha and Emirates Hills direction. Sibling bookings are common here, and two students in one household on different courses is an argument for two specialists rather than one generalist.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Uptown School's continuum cohort sits nearby, so a number of these students reach AA SL without an external IGCSE benchmark. A marked baseline paper in week one does the job that a set of IGCSE results would otherwise have done.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several UAE university campuses, which makes the equivalency and admissions questions more pressing for these families earlier. Evening slots here are easier than in the central districts, and 17:30 starts are usually realistic.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Apartment households where a quiet desk is easier to arrange than a spare room for a visiting tutor. Internet capacity, not space, is the variable worth testing in a trial lesson, particularly in older towers with shared connections.

Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina

Access and parking make in-home visits expensive to deliver and slow to arrange, and the tutors who accept the trip tend to price it in. Online removes the constraint entirely, which is why most of our enquiries from these addresses arrive after an in-home arrangement has fallen through.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the course name and the last mark

Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level, the school, the year group, and the most recent mark with the paper it came from. A mark without its component is hard to act on, because a 62 per cent made up of a strong Paper 2 and a weak Paper 1 needs a different plan from the reverse.

  2. 02

Meet the specialist in a free trial

A working session, not a presentation. The student attempts questions while the tutor watches the working appear, and you see how the tutor explains a correction. This is also where the technical setup is tested: document camera or graphics tablet, the student's own calculator, and the household connection.

  3. 03

    Build the topic ledger

In the first fortnight each of the five syllabus topics is tested with a short timed set, scored, and entered with a date. The ledger is what the whole arrangement runs on afterwards, and it stops the common failure where a tutor teaches whatever the student happens to ask about that week.

  4. 04

Work the lowest entry, then retest it

Teaching goes into the weakest topic until a comparable retest moves. Then the next. Retesting with a comparable set rather than the same questions is the part that is easy to skip and the only part that proves anything, so it is written into the plan rather than left to goodwill.

  5. 05

Review against the baseline before extending

At the end of the block the student sits a second full paper under the same conditions as the first. If the marks moved, the next block builds on what worked. If they did not, we change the tutor, the format or the level, and we name which. Nobody should extend a block on encouragement alone.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A ledger instead of a feeling

Five topics, each tested, scored and dated, with retests recorded beside the originals. A parent who cannot follow the mathematics can still follow a score that moved from eleven to sixteen out of twenty, and can ask why one that did not move has been left alone for three weeks.

The two papers prepared separately

Paper 1 allows no calculator and Paper 2 assumes one, and preparing for them together wastes half of every hour. Our Standard Level tutors split them in the term before the examinations, using the student's own calculator rather than a different model, because the menu layout matters under time pressure.

Marking is part of the arrangement, not a favour

Scripts come back annotated in mark-scheme wording, with the available marks shown beside the earned ones. This is the slowest part of a tutor's week and the first thing a travelling tutor drops when an evening overruns, which is one practical reason our delivery model is what it is.

Clear boundaries on the exploration

The exploration is the student's own work, and our tutors comment on it rather than contribute to it. Feedback is keyed to criteria A to E with the mark allocations stated. Several providers in this market sell completed coursework; the consequence of that falls on the candidate, not on the seller.

No level snobbery

Standard Level is a full mathematics course and is the right course for many capable students. We will say when a move down from Higher Level is the sensible response to the evidence, and we will also say when a student is comfortably within Standard Level and does not need a tutor at all.

Delivery and availability stated up front

Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video in Gulf Standard Time. There is no IB Gram office in the UAE and no home visits anywhere in the Emirates. If the slot you need is full, you are told before you pay, with the alternatives named rather than implied.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Is AA SL much easier than AA HL, or is that a myth parents are told?+

It is a genuinely smaller course rather than an easy one. Standard Level drops Paper 3, proof by induction, implicit differentiation and the harder integration techniques, and the guide recommends 150 teaching hours against 240. What remains is examined with the same precision, and because there are only two papers each worth 40 per cent, a poor ninety minutes costs more of the final grade than it would at Higher Level. Students who move down from HL usually find the content manageable and still lose marks to the same habits, which travel with them.

How many marks are actually available in AA SL, and how are they split?+

There are 160 examined marks, 80 on each paper, with each paper carrying 40 per cent of the final grade over ninety minutes. The exploration is marked out of 20 and carries the remaining 20 per cent. That works out at roughly one mark a minute in each paper, which is the pacing target we use in timed practice. Knowing the split matters because a single overall percentage from a school report hides which component is weak, and the two papers reward different preparation entirely.

My daughter understands the maths but keeps dropping five or six marks a paper. Why?+

That profile is the most common one at this level, and it is almost always a set of habits rather than a knowledge gap. The usual culprits are trigonometric solutions stopped after the principal value, domains and ranges known but not written, a chain rule lost inside a product, distribution parameters entered into a calculator in the wrong order, and pacing that leaves the final page unattempted. Each has a specific correction and each is visible in a marked script within an hour. Reteaching the syllabus does not fix any of them, which is why a baseline paper comes before a topic plan.

Does an AA SL tutor in Dubai come to the house, or do lessons happen over video?+

Over video. IB Gram matches your child to one Analysis and Approaches Standard Level specialist and the sessions run live online, one-to-one, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. We do not send a tutor to a Dubai address, and in-home visits are something we run only in India. Parents search for "home tutor" and the page uses the phrase, but the delivery model is stated before money is discussed. The gain is that the shortlist becomes everyone who teaches the course rather than everyone who can reach your community by half past five.

Why do we need separate sessions for Paper 1 and Paper 2?+

Because only one of them permits a calculator. Paper 1 examines exact values, surd and logarithm manipulation, trigonometric values from the unit circle and integration performed by hand. Paper 2 assumes a graphic display calculator and examines a different skill: choosing the right routine, reading a graph window, entering parameters correctly and sanity-checking the output. A student who revises everything with a calculator within reach has rehearsed only half the examination, and the gap shows up for the first time in the hall.

What does Standard Level maths tuition cost in Dubai at the moment?+

Published market rates for qualified online subject tutors run roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with IB specialists advertised from AED 200 and examination-year specialists reaching AED 450 and above in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table. In-home visits are quoted from about AED 180 to AED 500, with travel embedded in the rate. Standard Level typically prices below Higher Level because the pool of capable tutors is larger. Those are market figures rather than ours; IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson and a look at the first marked paper.

How long should the exploration be and how is it marked at Standard Level?+

The IB recommends twelve to twenty pages and marks the exploration out of twenty against five criteria: presentation worth four, mathematical communication worth four, personal engagement worth three, reflection worth three, and use of mathematics worth six. Criterion E asks for mathematics commensurate with the level studied, so a Standard Level student is not penalised for using Standard Level mathematics. Depth beats ambition at this level. The cheapest marks to recover are usually in reflection, which most drafts omit until the final page.

Can a tutor look at my son's exploration draft without it becoming malpractice?+

Yes, provided the boundaries are respected and recorded. The exploration must be entirely the student's own work. A tutor may discuss whether a research question can carry twenty marks, read a submitted draft, comment against the five criteria, flag unsupported claims and explain what each criterion rewards. A tutor may not supply sentences, rework paragraphs or hand over mathematics for insertion. Our tutors keep a written note of the advice given, which is useful if the school asks what support was received.

Should my child drop from Higher to Standard Level, and who decides?+

The school decides, and the marked evidence should inform the conversation. A student losing Higher Level marks to pacing and presentation will usually stay and improve. A student whose breakdown shows large blocks of unlearned HL content with eighteen months to go is carrying more mathematics than the foundation supports, and Standard Level is a reasonable answer rather than a defeat. Raise it with the Diploma coordinator early, because registration timetables constrain when a change can be made, and those timetables are set by the IB and the school rather than by a tutor.

Do we need a graphics tablet for online Standard Level maths lessons?+

Not necessarily, but something must show the handwriting. Two setups work. A phone or small camera on a stand pointed at the page, so the tutor watches the working appear line by line. Or a graphics tablet shared to the screen, which some students prefer and others find slower than paper. A laptop webcam angled at a desk is not adequate for marking algebra. Whichever you choose, test it during the free trial rather than discovering the problem in week three, and use the student's own calculator throughout.

Which Dubai schools do your Standard Level maths students come from?+

Across the emirate, from continuum schools such as Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, Uptown School, GEMS Modern Academy and Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, and from schools that run IGCSE before the Diploma including Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches, Deira International School and Raffles World Academy. KHDA recorded 227 private schools in the emirate in 2024-25. Those schools are named as market context only: IB Gram has no affiliation with, or endorsement from, any of them.

Is private tutoring legal in Dubai, and what should I ask a tutor to show me?+

It is legal and it is permitted rather than unregulated. Individuals giving private lessons need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years and MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time. Teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18 may apply. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, so ask to see it.

Can lessons work around the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education timetable?+

They have to, and it is worth understanding why the week is so full. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. Those lessons sit alongside six Diploma subjects and Theory of Knowledge, which is why a Standard Level maths session often lands after 18:00 and why online scheduling matters more here than families expect.

We start in January with exams in May. What is realistic in that time?+

Four months is enough to change the two papers' outcomes if the work is targeted. The order we would use: a baseline paper in week one, then the habit corrections that return marks fastest, then the weakest two topics on the ledger, then split calculator and non-calculator sessions for the final six weeks. What four months will not do is rebuild calculus and statistics from nothing. If the baseline shows twenty or more recoverable marks, the block is worth running, and if it shows five we will tell you rather than sell you the hours.

What if the tutor and my child simply do not get on?+

Say so early and we introduce someone else. The free trial exists to reduce the chance, but a mismatch that only appears in week three is a normal thing rather than a failure, particularly with teenagers who were not the ones who wanted a tutor. What does not transfer easily is the record, so we keep the ledger and the marked scripts with the student rather than with the tutor. A new specialist starts from the evidence already gathered instead of beginning the diagnosis again.

Find out which of the 160 marks are going missing

An IB DP Math AA SL home tutor in Dubai is worth hiring once you know what the problem is. The quickest route to that is one complete paper, sat under timed conditions and marked against the published mark scheme, followed by a short test of each of the five syllabus topics. That takes a fortnight and produces a ledger you can read. Book a free trial lesson with an Analysis and Approaches Standard Level specialist, see how they mark, and decide from there. Lessons are online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.
