IB DP Physics HL Home Tutor in Dubai

Families hiring an IB DP Physics HL home tutor in Dubai are often working from out-of-date advice. The 2023 physics syllabus removed the options and Paper 3 entirely, and first examinations were sat in May 2025, so a tutor still planning around an options paper is planning for a course that no longer exists. IB Gram matches your child to a specialist teaching the current syllabus, online and one-to-one in Gulf Standard Time, with marked work sent to you every fortnight.

  • Tutors working from the 2023 physics syllabus, not the pre-2025 structure
  • Paper 1B data-analysis questions practised as a separate examined skill

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The physics course changed, and most tutoring advice has not caught up

Higher Level physics in the Diploma was restructured for first teaching in 2023 and first examinations in May 2025, and the change was not cosmetic. The options are gone. Paper 3 is gone. The course is now organised into five themes, each with additional Higher Level content layered on a shared core, and the assessment is two written papers plus the scientific investigation. Any tutor, revision guide or well-meaning relative still talking about choosing an option or preparing for Paper 3 is describing the previous course.

What replaced it is a tighter structure that concentrates risk. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent of the grade and comes in two parts: Paper 1A, which is multiple choice, and Paper 1B, which is built from data-based and experimental questions. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and runs for two and a half hours at Higher Level, in short-answer and extended-response form. The scientific investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent, is marked out of 24 against four criteria of six marks each, and is limited to 3,000 words.

The practical consequence is that two of the three components now examine experimental skill directly. Paper 1B asks students to read data, work with uncertainties, extract gradients with their units, and judge whether a conclusion is supported. The scientific investigation asks for the same skills in a longer form. A student who is strong on theory and weak on uncertainties used to lose a handful of marks; on the current syllabus that weakness touches well over a third of the available grade, which is why we test it in the first fortnight rather than the final term.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video with the student's working visible. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a Dubai address; home visits are a service we run only in India. For Higher Level physics the trade is clear-cut. The number of people in any single Dubai community who teach HL physics on the current syllabus is small, and smaller again if the requirement is someone who can mark a data-analysis question properly. Limiting the shortlist to those who can drive to your villa by half past five generally means accepting a general science tutor instead.

Dubai's scale produces the isolation families describe. KHDA recorded 387,441 pupils in 227 private schools in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula, with the IB at 7 per cent of enrolment, and seven new schools open for 2026-27 including three International Baccalaureate schools, adding 16,846 places. Even so, a given school may enter six or eight candidates for Higher Level physics in a year. One teacher, one scheme of work, one laboratory timetable. If the gap is in field theory or in propagating an uncertainty through a calculation, there is rarely anybody with spare capacity to close it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level physics is built on habits formed in middle-years science and in whatever pre-Diploma course a student took. Here is what each programme contributes and the Dubai-specific thing to watch.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Physics at Higher Level is one of three HL subjects in a full Diploma, with 240 recommended hours against 150 at Standard Level. The guide sets aside an experimental programme of 60 hours at Higher Level, which includes the scientific investigation and the collaborative sciences project, so a substantial share of the course is time in a laboratory rather than at a desk.

Dubai candidates sit the May session almost without exception. The IB publishes and occasionally revises session windows, upload deadlines and results dates, so take those from your school's Diploma coordinator rather than from any tutoring site. The dates that govern a tutoring plan are the school's internal deadlines for the investigation, which normally fall a term before anything external.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP sciences assess four criteria, and criterion C, processing and evaluating, is the direct ancestor of Paper 1B and of the scientific investigation. A student with strong criterion A marks and weak criterion C marks will arrive in Higher Level physics able to recall theory and unable to handle a data set, which is now a large share of the examination.

Dubai continuum schools take students straight from MYP sciences into the Diploma with no external science examination in between. Asking the school for the criterion-level breakdown rather than the overall MYP grade is the most useful diagnostic a parent can obtain before DP1 begins, and almost nobody asks for it.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP science is inquiry-led, with measurement, fair testing and recording what actually happened rather than what was expected appearing early. Those are the foundations of experimental physics, and a child who learns to write down an anomalous reading instead of quietly discarding it is practising the skill the scientific investigation rewards a decade later.

KHDA inspects annually and comments on attainment and progress separately by subject. For a parent thinking long-term, the science progress judgement in a primary report describes the teaching group a child is actually in, which is more informative than the school's overall inspection band.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level physics is almost never booked alone. These are the subjects Dubai families most often pair with it, and the component that tends to decide each grade.

Physics

HL

Five themes with additional Higher Level content, examined through Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data analysis and a two-and-a-half-hour Paper 2, plus the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. Marks are lost most consistently on uncertainties, on gradients quoted without units, and on command terms read as synonyms.

Physics

SL

The same five themes without the additional Higher Level content, with a shorter Paper 1 and a ninety-minute Paper 2, and the same scientific investigation requirement. A student moving down from Higher Level keeps the experimental programme and loses the extension content in each theme.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The most common pairing. Calculus, logarithms and trigonometric identities all appear in physics, and students who treat the two subjects as separate lose physics marks to algebra they can demonstrably do. Paper 1 at Higher Level in maths permits no calculator, which is worth knowing when planning revision.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A calculator is assumed in every paper, and the statistics and data-handling content maps neatly onto Paper 1B in physics. The algebraic manipulation in physics Paper 2 is usually the harder adjustment for an Applications student, and naming that early prevents a slow surprise in DP2.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Shares the 2023 science assessment model: Paper 1A, Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the same scientific investigation criteria. Energetics and kinetics overlap with thermal physics. A student doing both sciences can prepare the investigation skills once and spend the saving on content.

Biology

HL and SL

Also on the 2023 model, with Paper 1B data analysis and the same four investigation criteria. The statistical treatment expected in biology data questions is heavier than in physics, which is useful experience for the physics investigation's evaluation criterion.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Paper 1, Paper 2 and a solution-development internal assessment. Physics students handle the logic and algorithmic content comfortably, and lose marks on the extended-response questions about system design, which reward structured writing rather than technical knowledge.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Shares an evidence-gathering and evaluation mindset with physics, and the internal assessment is substantial. Students taking both frequently underestimate how much coursework lands in the same term, which is a scheduling problem a tutoring plan has to work around.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research piece. A physics Extended Essay needs a question answerable with the equipment and data genuinely available, and the commonest failure is an ambitious topic with no feasible method, which is a problem best caught at the proposal stage rather than in the second term.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Higher Level physics needs session length, because a data-analysis question with error propagation and a graph is not a ten-minute exercise. These three formats cover the enquiries we take.

Ninety-minute weekly session

The default for Higher Level physics. A full Paper 1B question set with uncertainty work, or one extended Paper 2 response planned, written and then marked, uses the time properly. Sixty-minute sessions on this course tend to end mid-derivation, which is the least useful place to stop and the easiest way to lose a student's confidence.

  • One examined question worked end to end, then debriefed against the scheme
  • Uncertainty and graph work treated as its own strand each fortnight
  • Marked question sets returned before the following session

Theme rebuild block

A defined run of sessions on one theme and its additional Higher Level content: fields, or nuclear and quantum physics, or wave behaviour. Themes are self-contained enough to rebuild in five or six sessions, which makes this the highest-value option for a student who is otherwise sound but lost one unit to absence or to a staffing gap.

  • A named theme with a start date, an end date and a pre-test
  • A comparable post-test, scored and dated beside the first
  • Past examination questions only, no invented practice material

Investigation supervision block

A short block timed to the school's internal deadlines for the scientific investigation. The student submits what exists and the tutor comments against the four criteria, asking the questions a moderator would ask. The work stays the student's throughout and nothing is added to the report by the tutor.

  • Research-question triage before weeks are spent on an unworkable method
  • Comments keyed to the four criteria and their six-mark allocations
  • A written record of the advice given, available if the school asks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Higher Level physics home tutor search in Dubai is really asking

Specialist IB tuition in Dubai is published at roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour and above, and Higher Level physics sits at the top of that band because the supply of tutors is genuinely thin. IB Gram delivers it as one-to-one tuition over live video to every community in the emirate. We do not send a tutor to a UAE address, and in-home teaching is a service we run only in India. That is stated before money is discussed rather than buried in a footer.

The home-tutoring question still deserves a proper answer. In-home one-to-one in Dubai runs roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel embedded in the rate, and monthly packages of about AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visits are widely advertised. For some students the premium is worth paying: a younger child who will not work unsupervised, a household where the only device is shared, a learner who finds a screen a genuine obstacle rather than an inconvenience.

A Higher Level physics candidate is rarely in that position. What they need is somebody who can look at a graph with error bars and say why the gradient has been quoted without units, or explain what the additional Higher Level content in the fields theme is actually asking, or mark an extended response against the command term it used rather than against the facts it contained. Those are syllabus-specific capabilities. A tutor either holds them or does not, and the distance from their home to yours is irrelevant to the question.

There is a practical point about marking that follows from the delivery model. Data-analysis questions take longer to mark than theory questions, because the marker has to follow the uncertainty arithmetic and check the graph work line by line. That happens between sessions and nobody travels for it. A tutor who spends ninety minutes a day in Dubai traffic has less of that time, not more, and marking is the first thing to go when an evening overruns.

02

The 2023 syllabus: what changed, and why old advice is actively misleading

Until the 2023 syllabus, Higher Level physics was assessed through three written papers and an option chosen from a list, with Paper 3 covering the option alongside data analysis. Students chose between relativity, engineering physics, imaging and astrophysics, and a substantial amount of tutoring in this market was built around that choice. The current course has no options and no Paper 3. First examinations on the new structure were sat in May 2025.

The content is now organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Each theme carries a shared core plus additional Higher Level content, which replaces the old core-plus-additional-higher-level-topics arrangement with something more integrated. A theme is taught as one body of work, and the Higher Level extension sits inside it rather than being bolted on at the end of the year.

Assessment is now two papers and the investigation. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and is sat in two parts: Paper 1A, multiple choice, and Paper 1B, a set of data-based and experimental questions drawing on the skills developed in the practical programme. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and runs for two and a half hours at Higher Level, with short-answer and extended-response questions. The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent at both levels.

Why this matters for choosing a tutor: a great deal of material circulating online, including revision sites, second-hand textbooks and the advice of older siblings, still describes the previous structure. A student who spends a term preparing for an options paper is preparing for an examination that will not be set. The first question worth asking any physics tutor in this market is which themes they have taught and how they prepare students for Paper 1B, and a confident answer to the second half of that question is rarer than it should be.

03

Paper 1B: the paper nobody prepares for properly

Paper 1B is the component that most reliably separates students in the current syllabus, and it is the one least likely to have been rehearsed. It presents data, often from an experiment the student has not performed, and asks them to work with it: read values from a table or a graph, propagate an uncertainty, determine a gradient and state its units, decide whether a stated conclusion is supported by the evidence, and identify the limitation that matters most.

The marks are lost in a short and highly repeatable list. A gradient calculated correctly and quoted without units. An uncertainty given to three significant figures when the measurement justifies one. A percentage uncertainty added when it should have been combined through a power. An anomalous point noted and then included in the line of best fit anyway. A conclusion that restates the trend instead of evaluating whether the data supports it. Each of these is worth one or two marks, and together they routinely cost a capable student eight or ten.

None of that list is conceptually difficult, which is exactly why it persists. Students who understand physics well assume these are presentational details rather than examined content, and nobody corrects the assumption until a mock paper comes back. The fix is drill: a fortnightly data question marked strictly, with the same errors flagged until they stop appearing. It is unglamorous work and it moves marks faster than any theory teaching available at this stage.

The same skills reappear in the scientific investigation, which is the second reason to treat them as a strand in their own right. A student who can propagate uncertainties properly and evaluate a data set honestly is earning marks in two components worth 56 per cent of the grade between them. We pre-test this in the first fortnight with every new Higher Level physics student, because the result determines the shape of the whole block.

04

Paper 2 at Higher Level: two and a half hours and 44 per cent

Paper 2 is the largest single component in the course, carrying 44 per cent of the grade over two and a half hours at Higher Level. It mixes short-answer questions with extended responses across all five themes, and it rewards two things that are trainable independently of physics knowledge: reading the command term accurately, and writing the amount the mark allocation implies.

Command terms are not synonyms and the mark scheme does not treat them as such. "State" wants a one-line answer and no justification. "Describe" wants what happens without why. "Explain" requires a causal chain, and a response that describes beautifully without explaining collects none of the explanation marks. "Outline" sits between describe and explain. "Determine" requires working shown. Students who answer the physics they recognise rather than the question that was asked lose marks they had the knowledge to earn, which is the most frustrating category of loss on any script.

The second trainable habit is proportioning. A four-mark question wants four distinct creditable points, not one point written four ways. Students chronically overwrite on the first extended response, run short of time by the final theme, and leave a six-mark question half-attempted. Timing on this paper is not a revision topic; it is a technique that has to be practised against a clock, with the pacing rule written down and applied.

The physics itself still has to be there, and at Higher Level the additional content in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics is where the heaviest losses sit. Gravitational and electric field work with potential and potential energy, magnetic field direction with the right-hand rule applied consistently, and the photoelectric effect read from a graph rather than recalled from a formula sheet: these are the units students most often need rebuilt rather than revised, and they take four to six sessions each.

05

The five themes, and where Higher Level marks actually go missing

Each theme in the current syllabus carries a shared core and additional Higher Level content, and the losses in each are specific enough to be diagnosed from a marked script. Space, time and motion holds the kinematics and dynamics most students arrive comfortable with, and then adds momentum and impulse with sign conventions that trip up anybody treating velocity as a magnitude. Circular motion free-body diagrams are the other recurring casualty, usually because a centripetal force is drawn as an extra arrow rather than identified among the forces already present.

The particulate nature of matter covers thermal physics, gas laws and energy transfer, where the losses are almost always unit and state conversions rather than concepts. Wave behaviour holds superposition, standing waves, diffraction and interference, and its characteristic failure is a path-difference argument asserted without the condition that makes it true. Students who can describe constructive interference frequently cannot state the condition in terms of wavelength, which is the mark-bearing part.

Fields is the single hardest theme for most Higher Level candidates. Gravitational and electric fields are taught in parallel, with potential, potential energy and field strength all defined similarly and all examined separately. Students confuse potential with potential energy, quote a field strength where a potential was asked for, and lose sign conventions moving between attraction and repulsion. This theme repays a full rebuild more than any other, and six sessions on it is usually time well spent.

Nuclear and quantum physics closes the course and is often taught last, under time pressure, which is why so many students meet it badly. Binding energy per nucleon read from a curve, decay calculations handled with the right half-life relationship, and the photoelectric effect interpreted from a stopping-voltage graph are the examined skills. A student who met this theme in a rushed final term rather than taught properly will usually recover several marks from a short, targeted block.

06

The scientific investigation: four criteria, 24 marks, 3,000 words

The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent of the physics grade at both levels, is marked out of 24, and is limited to 3,000 words. Four criteria carry six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The criteria changed with the 2023 syllabus, which means exemplars and advice written for the previous individual investigation describe a different mark scheme. That is worth knowing before a student models their report on an older example found online.

Research design is where most reports are won or lost, and the decisions are made before any data exists. A research question narrow enough to answer, an independent variable that can actually be varied over a useful range, a dependent variable that can be measured with the equipment available, and controlled variables identified and genuinely controlled. Students routinely choose questions that cannot be answered with a school laboratory's apparatus and then spend two months gathering data that will not support any conclusion.

Data analysis rewards the uncertainty and graph work that Paper 1B also examines: raw data recorded with appropriate precision, uncertainties propagated correctly, a graph with error bars where they belong, and a gradient interpreted in physical terms with its units. Conclusion asks for an answer to the stated research question, supported by the data and placed against accepted physics. Evaluation asks for the weaknesses that actually mattered, ranked, with realistic improvements rather than the standard list of more repeats and better equipment.

The boundaries of legitimate help here are strict and we put them in writing. The investigation must be entirely the student's own work. A tutor may interrogate a research question until it is feasible, discuss whether a method can produce usable data, comment on a submitted draft against each criterion, point out where an uncertainty has been mishandled, and explain what each criterion rewards. A tutor may not supply text, rework paragraphs, generate data or provide analysis for insertion. Providers in this market sell completed coursework outright, and the malpractice consequence falls on the candidate alone.

07

Practical and laboratory work when the lessons are online

This is the first question most Dubai physics parents ask, and it deserves a direct answer. The laboratory work belongs to the school. The guide sets aside an experimental programme of 60 hours at Higher Level, including the scientific investigation and the collaborative sciences project, and that time is timetabled, supervised and resourced by the school your child attends. No tutor, online or in-person, replaces it, and any provider implying otherwise is misdescribing the course.

What a tutor can do is everything around the laboratory. Planning a method before the session so the laboratory time produces usable data rather than a wasted afternoon. Working through the uncertainty arithmetic afterwards. Checking that a graph has error bars where they belong and that the gradient has been interpreted rather than merely calculated. Rehearsing Paper 1B questions, which present data from experiments the student has never performed and therefore need no apparatus at all.

In practice the online format suits this work better than families expect. A student photographs their raw data table and their graph and sends them; the tutor marks them properly, with the errors annotated, which is more useful than a verbal comment made while looking over a shoulder. Screen sharing a spreadsheet and watching a student propagate an uncertainty step by step is a better diagnostic than watching them write a final answer on paper.

The limits are worth naming honestly. A student who has missed substantial laboratory time cannot recover the experimental hours through tuition, and the right conversation in that case is with the school rather than with a tutor. A student who will not engage without an adult physically present is not helped by better software. And handwritten derivations need a document camera or a graphics tablet, not a laptop webcam pointed at a desk. Each of those should be tested in the free trial rather than discovered in week three.

08

Rates, availability and the evidence file for Higher Level physics in Dubai

Higher Level physics is among the most expensive subjects to staff in this market, and the reason is supply rather than prestige. Published rates for IB specialists in Dubai run roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour and above, with in-home visits from about AED 180 to AED 500 because travel is priced in. Those figures come from the sources named in the table and are market rates, not an IB Gram price list. We quote after a free trial lesson, when we know which components are in play.

Availability is the constraint worth asking about before price. The tutors who teach the current syllabus confidently and can mark a data-analysis question strictly are a small group, and the hours between 17:00 and 19:00 Gulf Standard Time fill first across the whole emirate. When nobody suitable is free at your preferred hour we say so and name the alternatives: a different hour the same week, a short wait for a named specialist, or a tutor in another time zone whose availability is stated before you decide. No competitor page in our research discloses a coverage limit at all.

What you receive in return is a record. Every fortnight: the marked work annotated in mark-scheme wording, a theme log showing which of the five themes have been pre-tested, taught and post-tested, a separate line for the uncertainty and graph strand because it is examined in two components, and one sentence naming the current working mark and which paper it came from. The investigation drafts sit in the same file in sequence, with the criterion comments attached.

On sizing the commitment, Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run from roughly AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end to AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for examination-year specialist support, and a ninety-minute Higher Level physics session sits at the upper end. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private-school fees would not rise for 2026-27 under the emirate's second economic incentives package, which at least makes a tutoring budget easier to plan against a known school fee.

Regulators, permits and what a Dubai parent can check for themselves

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall under the Department of Education and Knowledge, Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah under the federal Ministry of Education. In Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah the authority approves fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods, which is a wider remit than inspection alone.

Private tutoring is governed separately and is permitted rather than unregulated. Individuals giving private lessons need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications made through the ministry's app, website or e-services system. Eligible applicants include registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18.

Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any figure quoted at a parent should be treated with suspicion. There is one more boundary worth knowing: Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for school staff have been reported as barring teachers from paid private tuition of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct to similar effect. Treat that as press-reported and verify it against the current policy document before relying on it.

All of this is checkable by a parent directly, which is the reason for setting it out. Ask any in-person tutor to show the permit. Read the regulator's own school listing rather than a provider's claim about a school. And treat marketing that attaches a regulator's initials to the word "approved" and then to a tutor as a prompt for harder questions: KHDA licenses schools and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises, and IB Gram holds neither, nor any accreditation from ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities we take Higher Level physics enquiries from

Physics enquiries cluster around the schools that actually run the course at Higher Level, and the practical variable is when a student is home and able to concentrate on a data question. These are the areas we hear from most.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment living where access and parking make in-home visits slow to arrange and expensive to deliver. Most of our enquiries from these towers arrive after a travelling arrangement collapsed over timing rather than over teaching.

Al Sufouh and Dubai Media City

Close to GEMS Wellington International School and several university campuses. Sessions after 19:00 are common because of after-school commitments, and that is precisely the slot a travelling specialist is least willing to take at the end of a day of driving.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Production City

Outer villa communities where the drive from the central districts in evening traffic effectively rules out the 17:00 to 19:00 window. Removing travel from the arrangement is what makes a consistent weekly physics slot possible here.

Dubai Hills Estate

Diploma candidates spread across schools in several directions, so the nearest physics tutor and the right physics tutor are rarely the same person. Families here ask about Paper 1B data work more often than about theory, which is a well-informed question.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Mizhar

Uptown School's continuum cohort is nearby, so a number of these students reach Higher Level physics without having sat an external science paper. A marked Paper 1B in the first fortnight does the diagnostic job that IGCSE results would otherwise have done.

Academic City and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Proximity to UAE university campuses makes admissions questions about Higher Level physics live earlier for these families. Evening slots here are easier to fill than in the central districts, and 17:30 starts are usually realistic.

Emirates Hills and Jumeirah Islands

Served by Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills and Emirates International School Meadows, both with established Diploma cohorts. Higher Level physics groups are still small, which is how a student ends up the only one in their year needing field theory rebuilt.

Business Bay and Al Jaddaf

Dense apartment stock with Swiss International Scientific School Dubai in the same direction. A quiet desk is easier to arrange than a spare room, and household connection capacity is the thing worth testing during a trial lesson.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level and which themes are in trouble

Higher Level physics, the school, the year group, and if you know it, the theme causing difficulty. "Fields" and "nuclear and quantum" route an enquiry differently. Mentioning whether the problem is theory or data analysis is more useful still, because they are separately examined and separately taught.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with a named physics specialist

A working session. The student attempts a question from a theme they find hard, and you see how a wrong answer is handled. It is also where the setup is tested: a document camera or graphics tablet for derivations, and the household connection, so neither becomes a surprise later.

  3. 03

Pre-test the themes and the data strand

In the first fortnight each of the five themes gets a short timed test, and the uncertainty and graph strand is tested separately because it is examined in both Paper 1B and the investigation. Scores and dates go into a theme log, which is what the rest of the block runs on.

  4. 04

Rebuild the lowest theme, drill the data strand weekly

Teaching concentrates on the weakest theme until a comparable post-test moves, then shifts. The data strand runs every fortnight regardless, because it accounts for a large share of the grade and responds to repetition rather than to explanation. Fields usually needs the longest block.

  5. 05

Review the log before extending anything

At the end of a block the pre-test and post-test scores sit side by side with the investigation drafts in sequence. If the themes moved, the next block builds on it. If they did not, we change the tutor, the format or the level and say which. No block is extended on the strength of encouragement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Tutors working from the current syllabus

The 2023 restructure removed the options and Paper 3, and a great deal of advice circulating in this market still assumes they exist. Our physics tutors teach the five themes and prepare students for Paper 1B, which is the question worth asking any candidate tutor before you book anything.

Uncertainty and graph work treated as a strand

Paper 1B and the scientific investigation together account for a large share of the grade, and both examine the same experimental skills. We test them separately in the first fortnight and drill them fortnightly thereafter, because a student strong in theory can still be losing ten marks a paper to units and significant figures.

Command terms marked strictly

"State", "describe", "explain", "outline" and "determine" each carry a different obligation in the mark scheme, and physics students lose marks they had the knowledge to earn by answering the wrong one. Scripts come back marked against the term the question used, which is uncomfortable the first few times and effective after that.

Honest about what the school's laboratory does

The experimental programme belongs to the school and a tutor does not replace it. What we do is plan the method before the session so the laboratory time produces usable data, then work through the uncertainties afterwards. Any provider suggesting they can substitute for timetabled practical work is misdescribing the course.

Firm limits on investigation support

The scientific investigation is the student's own work and our tutors comment on it rather than contribute to it. Feedback is keyed to the four criteria with their six-mark allocations stated. Providers in this market sell finished coursework; the malpractice consequence of that falls on the candidate, not on the seller.

Coverage limits disclosed before payment

Lessons are online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE and keeps no office here. Higher Level physics specialists are a small group and early-evening slots fill first, so if your hour is unavailable we say so with the alternatives named rather than filling it with a general science tutor.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Does IB Physics HL still have a Paper 3 and an options topic?+

No. The 2023 physics syllabus removed the options and Paper 3, and first examinations on the new structure were sat in May 2025. The course is now five themes assessed through Paper 1, which carries 36 per cent and splits into a multiple-choice Paper 1A and a data-analysis Paper 1B, Paper 2 at 44 per cent running two and a half hours at Higher Level, and the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. A tutor, textbook or revision site still describing an options paper is describing the previous course.

What is Paper 1B and why do good physics students lose marks on it?+

Paper 1B presents data, usually from an experiment the student has not performed, and examines experimental skill in a written paper. The recurring losses are specific: a gradient quoted without units, an uncertainty given to more significant figures than the measurement justifies, percentage uncertainties added when they should have been combined through a power, an anomalous point noted and then included in the line of best fit, and a conclusion that restates a trend instead of evaluating whether the data supports it. Each costs one or two marks and together they add up quickly.

Does the physics tutor come to our home in Dubai, or is this online?+

Online, one-to-one, over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to any UAE address, and in-home teaching is a service we run only in India. Parents search for "home tutor" and this page uses the phrase honestly, but on Higher Level physics the trade is unusually favourable. The people who teach the current syllabus and can mark a data question strictly are few, and restricting the shortlist to those within driving distance usually means accepting a general science tutor instead.

How is practical work handled if my son is tutored over video?+

The laboratory work belongs to his school. The guide sets aside an experimental programme of 60 hours at Higher Level, including the scientific investigation and the collaborative sciences project, and that time is timetabled and resourced by the school. A tutor works around it: planning the method beforehand so the laboratory session produces usable data, then marking the uncertainty arithmetic and the graphs afterwards. Paper 1B questions need no apparatus at all, since they present data from experiments the student has never performed.

Which physics theme causes the most trouble at Higher Level?+

Fields, consistently. Gravitational and electric fields are taught in parallel with potential, potential energy and field strength all defined similarly and all examined separately, so students quote a field strength where a potential was asked for and lose sign conventions moving between attraction and repulsion. Magnetic field direction and induction add to it. This theme repays a full rebuild rather than revision, and in one-to-one work that usually takes five or six sessions. Nuclear and quantum physics runs a close second, mostly because it is taught last and rushed.

What are the four criteria for the IB physics scientific investigation?+

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks for a total of 24, with the report limited to 3,000 words and the component carrying 20 per cent of the grade. Research design is where most reports are decided, because the question, variables and method are chosen before any data exists. Evaluation is where marks are most often left unclaimed, because students list generic improvements rather than ranking the weaknesses that actually affected the result. These criteria changed with the 2023 syllabus, so older exemplars describe a different mark scheme.

How much does Higher Level physics tuition cost in Dubai?+

Published market rates for IB specialists in Dubai run roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour and above, with Unitors advertising IB from AED 200, TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table reaching past AED 450 for examination-year specialists. In-home visits are quoted from about AED 180 to AED 500 with travel embedded, and monthly in-home packages of AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions are commonly advertised. Higher Level physics sits at the top of that range because supply is thin. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson.

Why does my daughter understand the physics and still score a 4?+

Usually a combination of command terms and proportioning. "Explain" requires a causal chain and a response that describes without explaining collects none of the explanation marks, however accurate it is. A four-mark question wants four distinct creditable points, not one point written four ways, and students who overwrite the first extended response run out of time before the last theme. Add the Paper 1B losses on units and significant figures and a student with genuinely good physics can sit a long way below their understanding. All three are trainable.

What can a tutor legitimately do with an investigation draft?+

Interrogate the research question until the method is feasible, discuss whether the apparatus can produce usable data, read a submitted draft and comment against each of the four criteria, point out a mishandled uncertainty, and explain what each criterion rewards. What a tutor must not do is supply text, rework paragraphs, generate data or provide analysis for insertion. The investigation must be entirely the student's own work. Our tutors keep a written note of the advice given, which is useful if the school asks what support was received.

Can my son take Higher Level physics if his school only teaches it to a few students?+

That is the normal situation in Dubai rather than the exception. KHDA recorded 227 private schools in the emirate with the IB at 7 per cent of enrolment, and a single school may enter six or eight Higher Level physics candidates in a year. One teacher, one scheme of work, one laboratory timetable. The course runs perfectly well; what is scarce is individual attention when a theme goes wrong. That is precisely the gap one-to-one work fills, and it is why an online match matters more here than in a larger subject.

Is Higher Level physics needed for engineering or medicine in the UAE?+

Entry requirements are set by individual universities and faculties and are revised, so the only reliable source is the admissions page for the named course and the year of entry. The broad pattern is that engineering programmes commonly expect Higher Level physics and mathematics, while medicine more often specifies chemistry and biology with physics optional. No tutoring is required for any admissions process, and any provider implying that a course of lessons is necessary for a university or regulatory outcome is manufacturing urgency about somebody else's decision.

We have twelve weeks before the papers. Where should the hours go?+

In this order. First, two weeks on the data strand, because units, significant figures and uncertainty propagation return marks faster than any theory teaching at that stage. Second, the weakest theme from a pre-test, which for most students is fields. Third, timed Paper 2 practice with a written pacing rule and strict command-term marking. Twelve weeks will not rebuild three themes from nothing, and a plan pretending otherwise wastes the time. A baseline paper in week one shows how many marks are genuinely in reach.

Do private tutors in Dubai need a licence, and can I verify it?+

Yes and yes. Individuals giving private lessons need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications through its app, website or e-services. Registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18 may apply. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, so ask to see it.

If no Higher Level physics specialist is free in our slot, what then?+

You are told before paying, which is not standard in this market. Hours between 17:00 and 19:00 Gulf Standard Time fill first across the emirate, so the realistic alternatives are a different hour the same week, often 16:30 or 20:00; a short wait for a named specialist to free a slot; or a tutor in another time zone whose availability is stated plainly so you can judge whether it works for your household. What we will not do is fill the slot with a general science tutor and leave you to find the gap.

Can sessions shift during Ramadan or pause for study leave?+

Both, and online delivery is what makes it simple. Ramadan shortens the school day in Dubai and reshapes the evening, so physics sessions commonly move to post-Iftar slots for that period and then return to the usual time. Study leave and the examination weeks themselves are usually the right moment to pause rather than push, and that is better agreed in advance than cancelled week by week. Family travel is handled the same way, since the lesson follows the student rather than an address.

Check the syllabus, then check the data strand

If you are looking for an IB DP Physics HL home tutor in Dubai, two questions settle most of it. Which themes has the tutor taught on the current syllabus, and how do they prepare a student for Paper 1B? A tutor who answers the second question confidently is rarer than one who answers the first. Book a free trial lesson with a Higher Level physics specialist, let them pre-test the uncertainty and graph work, and read the first marked script before committing to a block. Lessons are online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.
