IB DP Math AI SL Home Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Math AI SL home tutor in Dubai is usually hired for one of two reasons: a student who finds the statistics manageable and the modelling questions baffling, or a student who picked Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level as the safe option and is now unsure it was. IB Gram pairs your child with a specialist in this exact course, teaching live online in Gulf Standard Time, and every fortnight you receive a scorecard rather than an impression.

  • A specialist in this course, not a general maths tutor covering four syllabuses
  • Both AI SL papers assume a calculator, and sessions are run that way
  • Financial mathematics and statistical testing taught as examined strands
  • Free trial lesson before payment, and a replacement if the match is wrong

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The course that looks like the safe choice and then asks for something different

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is the most chosen mathematics course in many Dubai Diploma cohorts, and it is chosen for the wrong reason more often than any other. Students take it because it has a reputation for being the gentlest of the four. What they find is a course where a graphic display calculator is assumed in both papers, where roughly a third of the teaching hours sit in statistics and probability, and where a large share of the marks depend on explaining what a number means rather than on producing it.

The structure is straightforward and worth stating plainly, because many families have never seen it written down. There are two written papers, each 80 marks over ninety minutes, each carrying 40 per cent of the final grade. The exploration is marked out of twenty and carries the remaining 20 per cent. There is no Paper 3 at Standard Level. The guide recommends 150 teaching hours, of which about 120 cover examined content: around 36 in statistics and probability, 31 in functions, 19 in calculus, 18 in geometry and trigonometry and 16 in number and algebra.

That distribution is the key to how the course behaves. A student weak in statistics is weak in the largest part of the examination, and statistics is also the most quickly recoverable content in the Diploma, because much of it is procedural once the right calculator routine and the right written template are known. A student weak in functions and modelling has a slower problem, because interpreting and justifying a model is a judgement skill that develops over months rather than weeks. Those two profiles need completely different tutoring plans, and a single mock percentage cannot tell them apart.

Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a Dubai address, and in-home tuition is something we run only in India. For this course the honest argument is availability rather than scarcity: AI SL candidates outnumber every other Diploma maths group in most Dubai schools, which means demand is concentrated in the same two early-evening hours across the whole city. Removing travel from the arrangement is what makes a 16:30 or a 20:00 session possible at all.

Dubai's market context matters for a different reason here. KHDA counted 387,441 pupils in 227 private schools in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula, with the IB at 7 per cent of enrolment, and confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private-school fees would not rise for 2026-27 under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Against a school fee that is holding flat, a tutoring decision is easier to size honestly, and the right question becomes how few hours will fix the specific problem rather than how many hours a family can absorb.

At a glance

  • AI SL has two papers of 80 marks each, ninety minutes each, 40 per cent each
  • A graphic display calculator is assumed in both papers; there is no non-calculator paper
  • Statistics and probability is the largest strand at roughly 36 of the guide's hours
  • Financial mathematics, including compound interest and amortisation, is examined content
  • The exploration is marked out of twenty and carries 20 per cent of the grade
  • All tuition is delivered online one-to-one; no tutor attends a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Applications and Interpretation rewards interpretation and justification, and those skills are visible years before a student reaches Standard Level maths. Here is what each programme contributes and what to watch for in Dubai.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

AI SL satisfies the Diploma's mathematics requirement and is frequently taken at Standard Level alongside two or three Higher Level subjects elsewhere. The 150 recommended hours include around thirty notionally reserved for the exploration, leaving roughly 120 for examined content across the five topics.

Almost all Dubai candidates sit the May session. Session windows, upload deadlines and results dates are set and revised by the IB, so take them from your school's Diploma coordinator rather than from any tutoring site. In practice the dates that govern a tutoring plan are the school's own internal exploration deadlines, which usually sit a full term earlier.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP mathematics assesses four criteria, and criterion D, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, is the direct forerunner of this course. A student who writes confidently about what a result means, even when the arithmetic is shaky, is well suited to Applications and should be told so rather than steered towards Analysis by default.

In Dubai's continuum schools the choice between the two mathematics routes is often made on teacher recommendation with no external examination evidence on either side. Asking the school for the criterion-level MYP breakdown rather than the overall grade is the single most useful question available to a parent in Year 11.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Data handling, measurement and pattern appear early in the PYP and are the strands that matter most for a future Applications student. The course at the far end of the route is largely about reading data and justifying a conclusion from it, which begins as a primary-school habit rather than a secondary-school technique.

KHDA inspects Dubai schools annually and reports attainment and progress separately by subject. A primary report showing good attainment but only acceptable progress in mathematics is the earliest reliable signal a parent receives, and it describes the teaching group the child is actually in rather than the school's headline band.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

AI SL rarely arrives alone in an enquiry. These are the subjects Dubai families most often book alongside it, with the component that tends to decide each grade.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL

Two 80-mark papers plus the exploration, calculator assumed throughout. Financial mathematics, Voronoi diagrams, correlation and regression, the chi-squared test and the trapezoidal rule are the strands where marks are won and lost at this level.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL

Adds a one-hour Paper 3 of 55 marks, plus matrices and eigenvalues, graph theory, coupled differential equations and Euler's method. A student considering the move up should understand that Paper 3 is a trained skill rather than extra content, and takes time to build.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL

The algebraic route at Standard Level, with a non-calculator Paper 1. Students who find Applications statistics tedious but enjoy algebraic manipulation are sometimes in the wrong course, and a marked paper from each is the cheapest way to settle the question.

Business Management

HL and SL

Break-even analysis, investment appraisal and ratio interpretation sit close to the financial mathematics in AI SL. The marks usually lost are in strategic evaluation against a named business context rather than in any calculation, which is a writing problem rather than a numeracy one.

Economics

HL and SL

Three internally assessed commentaries on published articles, plus written papers with diagram work. AI SL students handle the quantitative questions comfortably and lose marks on precise definitions and on correctly labelled diagrams, which reward drill rather than understanding.

Geography

HL and SL

Fieldwork data in the internal assessment needs statistical treatment, and AI SL students have the tools to do it properly. Written papers reward specific case-study detail and command-term discipline, so the maths advantage does not carry across to the examination papers.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

A transdisciplinary course with substantial data interpretation, which suits this profile well. The internal investigation is where AI SL students can distinguish themselves, provided the statistical treatment matches the data rather than being added for show.

Psychology

HL and SL

Higher Level psychology includes research methodology and inferential statistics, which overlap directly with the AI SL statistics strand. Students who do not connect the two tend to lose marks on study evaluation, where the statistical weakness of a named study is the point being tested.

English B

HL and SL

Listening, reading, writing and speaking components with a productive-skills emphasis. Listed here because Dubai families frequently pair a maths booking with a language one, and because the individual oral is the component most commonly left too late to rehearse properly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Standard Level Applications responds well to short, frequent, targeted work, because much of what goes wrong is procedural. These three formats cover almost every enquiry we take on this course.

Weekly sixty-minute session

Enough for this course, since the papers are ninety minutes and questions are shorter than at Higher Level. The hour is spent on worked questions and the diagnosis, with marking done between sessions so no lesson time is lost to a tutor reading in silence. Most students on this course start here and stay.

  • One strand from the scorecard per fortnight, tested then retested
  • A marked question set returned before the next lesson
  • The student's own calculator used in every session

Two short sessions a week

Forty-five minutes twice weekly, which suits students who lose concentration in a long block and students whose problem is procedural fluency rather than understanding. Statistics and financial mathematics respond particularly well to this pattern, because both are built from routines that need repeating rather than explaining twice.

  • Shorter blocks that fit around activities and the school run
  • More frequent retesting, so a gap is caught within days
  • Easier to sustain through February, when deadlines cluster

Exploration review block

A short defined set of sessions timed to the school's internal exploration deadlines. The student submits what exists, the tutor reads it against the five criteria and returns written comments, and the session is spent on questions only the student can answer. Nothing is added to the document by the tutor.

  • Criterion-by-criterion comments with mark allocations stated
  • Early triage of a research question that cannot reach twenty marks
  • A written record of the advice given, available if the school asks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What you are buying when you search for an AI SL home tutor in Dubai

Qualified online subject tutors in Dubai publish rates from roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, and IB specialists from about AED 200 to AED 450. IB Gram delivers Applications and Interpretation support as one-to-one tuition over live video to every community in the emirate. We do not send a tutor to a UAE address; in-home work is a service we run only in India. That is said before money is discussed, because two providers in this market route Emirates enquiries overseas without saying so.

The in-home question is a fair one and this page answers it rather than deflecting. A tutor physically present removes the option of a quiet refusal to work, supplies social pressure that some teenagers genuinely respond to, and makes a lesson visible to a parent in the next room. Those are real benefits. Market rates for in-home one-to-one in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel embedded, and monthly packages of about AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visits are commonly advertised.

What the premium does not buy is subject match. On this course the three things that most often need fixing are a written template for statistical tests, fluency with the financial mathematics routines, and the habit of explaining what a model means in one sentence. Each of those is specific, each is teachable in a handful of sessions, and none of them depends on the tutor being in the room. A generalist who travels well can still be the wrong person for a chi-squared question.

The scheduling effect is what families comment on by week four. A tutor who does not drive can hold 16:30 on a Monday and 20:00 on a Wednesday without renegotiating, can shift to post-Iftar slots for Ramadan and then shift back, and does not lose the marking hour to traffic. For a Diploma student already carrying six subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the mandatory UAE subjects, a session that can move is a session that survives.

02

Where the AI SL hours actually sit, and what that means for a plan

The Applications and Interpretation guide distributes its Standard Level hours unevenly, and reading that distribution is how a tutoring plan gets built in the right order. Statistics and probability takes the largest share at around 36 hours. Functions follows at around 31. Calculus has roughly 19, geometry and trigonometry roughly 18, and number and algebra roughly 16, with a further thirty notionally reserved for the exploration.

Number and algebra carries the fewest hours and includes the strand students most often arrive unable to do: financial mathematics. Compound interest with varying compounding periods, annuities, amortisation and loan repayment schedules are examined content, they appear in both papers, and they are almost entirely procedural. A student who cannot do them is losing marks that could be recovered inside three sessions, which makes this the highest-yield place to start for most new enquiries on this course.

Functions is the strand that behaves least like the others. Modelling with an appropriate function family, transformations, and the written justification of a model choice are judgement skills. They improve slowly and they cannot be drilled in a fortnight, which is why a student whose weakness is here needs a longer block and an earlier start. Telling the difference between a functions problem and a statistics problem is most of what the first two weeks of diagnosis is for.

Calculus at this level is narrower than many parents expect: introductory differentiation, tangents and normals, increasing and decreasing behaviour, optimisation, and the trapezoidal rule for area. There is no integration by substitution and no implicit differentiation. The marks lost here are usually about reading which quantity a question wants rather than about technique, and that is a comprehension drill rather than a mathematics one.

03

Financial mathematics: the strand nobody revises until it is too late

Compound interest, annuities and amortisation sit inside AI SL's number and algebra topic, and they are the clearest example of examined content that students ignore because it does not feel like mathematics. The questions are not conceptually hard. They require knowing which calculator application handles a loan repayment, which sign convention the device expects for payments and balances, and how to read the output back into the units the question asked for.

The marks are won and lost in small, specific places. Interest compounded quarterly when the rate is quoted annually. A payment entered as positive when the device expects it negative, producing a plausible answer with the wrong sign. An amortisation question asking for the outstanding balance after a stated number of years rather than the total paid. Each of these is a one-line error that costs two or three marks, and each is eliminated by practice on the student's own calculator rather than by explanation.

This strand is also where the course earns its name. A question asking whether a particular loan arrangement is better value than another is asking for a comparison and a justification, not just two numbers. Mark schemes award for the conclusion stated in context, and students who produce both figures and then stop lose the final mark on a question they had effectively completed. A written template handles this, and it is three lines long.

The practical reason we start here with many new students is that the return on time is high and visible. A student who could not do amortisation in week one and can do it reliably by week three has moved a measurable number of marks, which changes the atmosphere around a tutoring arrangement that was begun reluctantly. Starting with the slowest strand in a course is defensible pedagogically and often fatal to a teenager's willingness to continue.

04

A third of the course is statistics, and most of its marks are in the writing

Statistics and probability is the largest strand in AI SL at roughly 36 guide hours, and it is the part of the course where students most reliably underperform relative to their understanding. The reason is consistent: they treat the statistical result as the answer. Mark schemes do not. A chi-squared test for independence is marked for the hypotheses, the test named, the degrees of freedom or the p-value, the comparison against the significance level, and a conclusion expressed in the context of the original question.

A student who writes a p-value and "so they are independent" typically collects fewer than half the available marks with every number correct. The correction is a template per test type, learned to the point of automation: what to state before the calculator, what to record from it, and what sentence to write after. We drill three templates at this level, for the chi-squared test for independence, the chi-squared goodness-of-fit test and the t-test, and they transfer directly into the exploration.

Regression and correlation behave the same way. Pearson's correlation coefficient quoted without comment on strength and direction, a regression line used to predict far outside the data range without noting that extrapolation is unreliable, a coefficient of determination reported and not interpreted: all of these are available marks left on the table. These are not difficult points. They are habits, and habits respond to repetition rather than to a better explanation.

Sampling and data presentation round out the strand and are examined more carefully than students expect. Knowing why a convenience sample limits a conclusion, identifying an outlier by the stated rule rather than by eye, and choosing a presentation that suits the data type are all mark-bearing. They also matter in the exploration, which is one reason why a block of work on statistics pays twice in this course.

05

Was Applications and Interpretation the right choice? An honest decision table

A substantial minority of the AI SL enquiries we take are really route questions in disguise. The student is coping, the grade is a 4 or a 5, and the parent wants to know whether the problem is the course rather than the effort. That is a legitimate question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales response, because the honest answer is sometimes that no tutor is needed, and sometimes that a different course would have suited better but switching now would cost more than it gains.

The signals are reasonably reliable. A student who enjoys the statistics and the financial questions and stalls at modelling and justification is in the right course and needs writing work rather than mathematics. A student who finds the statistics tedious, prefers algebraic manipulation and resents being asked to interpret is often better suited to Analysis and Approaches, though by DP2 that observation is usually academic. A student who is coping with everything and scoring a 5 because of pacing and presentation needs four sessions, not a year.

Switching is governed by the school and by IB registration, never by a tutor, and a family considering it should raise it with the Diploma coordinator immediately rather than after a term of deliberation. What we can do is scope it: moving from AI SL to AA SL means acquiring a non-calculator paper that has never been sat, which is usually the real obstacle rather than the new content. Moving from AI SL up to AI HL means the HL-only strands plus Paper 3 technique, which is a substantial piece of work.

The table below is the version of this conversation we have most often. It is a planning aid rather than a diagnosis, and the marked evidence from a first block will always tell you more than any table can. What it is useful for is deciding which question to ask the school, which is frequently the step families skip.

The exploration at AI SL: twenty marks from a question you can answer

The exploration is worth twenty per cent of the final grade, is marked out of twenty against five criteria, and runs to a recommended twelve to twenty pages. Criterion E, use of mathematics, carries six marks and asks for mathematics commensurate with the level studied, which for a Standard Level Applications candidate means a statistical test chosen properly and interpreted properly, or a model fitted and then criticised. It does not mean reaching for Higher Level techniques.

The characteristic failure on this course is data without a question. A student collects a large and genuinely interesting data set, then looks for mathematics to apply to it, and ends up with an exploration containing a great deal of work and very little personal engagement or reflection. The order that works is the reverse: a question narrow enough to answer, then the minimum data needed to answer it, then the test or model, then honest commentary on what the analysis could not show.

Criterion D, reflection, is worth three marks and is the cheapest available improvement in this course. Most drafts contain no reflection until a concluding paragraph. Examiners expect it throughout: what the result meant, what the sample could not support, what a different approach would have produced. Criterion C, personal engagement, also worth three, is far easier to earn with data the student gathered themselves than with a downloaded file, which is the single most practical piece of advice available at the planning stage.

The boundaries on tutor involvement are fixed and we put them in writing. The exploration must be entirely the student's own work. A tutor may interrogate a research question until it is answerable, read a submitted draft, comment against each criterion, note where a statistical test does not support the claim being made, and explain what each criterion rewards. A tutor may not supply sentences, rework paragraphs, choose the data or hand over analysis for insertion. Providers in this market sell completed coursework outright, and the malpractice consequence falls on the candidate.

What AI SL tuition costs in Dubai, and what a travelling tutor adds

Three of the six competitor pages examined for this market publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars. The table below gives the AED position for Standard Level Applications tuition in Dubai, with the source of each band. These are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list. Our arrangement starts with a free trial lesson, and a quote afterwards reflects how many strands are in play and how many weeks remain before the session.

Standard Level prices below Higher Level in this market because the pool of capable tutors is larger, and on this course that is particularly true: a competent mathematics teacher can teach AI SL content, whereas AI HL requires graph theory, matrices and eigenvalues that many have never taught. A family being quoted a Higher Level rate for Standard Level work is entitled to ask what the premium buys, and to expect a specific answer.

A travelling tutor adds roughly AED 50 to AED 200 an hour over an equivalent online session here, and that addition is travel rather than quality. It is money well spent in particular circumstances: a younger student who will not work without supervision, a household where the only device is shared, a learner for whom a screen is a genuine barrier. For a sixteen-year-old who needs three sessions of amortisation drill on their own calculator, it is not.

On sizing the decision, Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run from roughly AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle band, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for examination-year specialist support. Set against KHDA's confirmation on 22 May 2026 that Dubai school fees would not rise for 2026-27, a short, targeted block is usually a better use of a family's budget than an open-ended weekly commitment.

The fortnightly scorecard, and the limits of what any tutor can promise

Evidence on this course takes the form of a strand scorecard, because AI SL marks are lost in identifiable places. Five rows, one per topic, each with a date, a score out of a stated total, and a retest score when one exists. Alongside it: the marked work annotated in mark-scheme wording, and one line naming which paper is currently weaker and why. It fits on a screen and a parent who has never studied the course can read it.

What the scorecard deliberately excludes is encouragement. "Working well" and "improving steadily" cannot be checked a month later and are therefore worthless as management information. A row that reads "statistics, 9 March, 12 out of 25; retest 23 March, 19 out of 25" can be checked, and so can a row that has not moved in six weeks. The second kind of row is the useful one, because it prompts a change rather than a continuation.

The scorecard also records what was not attempted. Three missed question sets in a row is information about the timetable or the arrangement rather than about the student's character, and the right response is often to move the slot or shorten the sessions. February is the usual pressure point in Dubai, when internal assessment deadlines across several subjects land in the same fortnight and a maths question set is the first thing to be dropped.

No tutor can promise a grade, and anybody in this market who offers one should be treated with real scepticism. What can be promised is that the evidence is dated and in front of you, and that an arrangement which is not working becomes visible within six weeks rather than in August. At the end of a block the student sits a second full paper under the conditions of the first, and those two scripts side by side are the only honest measure available.

Equivalency, permits and the things a Dubai parent can verify directly

Two administrative questions come up on nearly every Standard Level maths enquiry, and both have published answers that no competitor page in our research covers. The first is Ministry of Education equivalency. For British-curriculum students the rule is specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. For the American track, mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Mathematics test, and English proficiency is evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section.

For the IB there is no points threshold we are prepared to publish, because the source we read does not state one and we have not read a figure on the Ministry's own site. One ranking competitor already publishes a wrong IGCSE subject count, and inheriting an error of that kind across a set of pages would be worse than declining to answer. Check the IB position on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate attestation authority. Equivalency is a Ministry process; no tutor performs it, guarantees it, or is required for it.

The second question is the permit. Individuals giving private lessons in the UAE need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications through the ministry's app, website or e-services. Teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18 may apply, and anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

A parent can verify all of this directly, which is the point of setting it out. Ask any in-person tutor to show the permit. Read the regulator's own school listing rather than a provider's claim about a school. And treat any phrase that attaches a regulator's name to the word "approved" and then to a tutor as a prompt for harder questions: KHDA licenses schools and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises, and IB Gram holds neither, nor any accreditation from ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or any examination board.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities we take AI SL enquiries from

What changes between communities is not the syllabus but the clock: which schools are in reach, when a student is actually home, and how plausible a travelling tutor ever was. These are the areas that generate most Standard Level Applications enquiries.

Town Square and Remraam

Outer villa communities where in-home visits cost more because the drive is longer, and where the 17:00 to 19:00 window is effectively unavailable to a tutor coming from the city. Removing travel is what makes a weekly slot stick here past February.

Arjan and Al Barsha South

Dense apartment stock close to several IB continuum schools, so students are home relatively early and 16:30 starts are realistic. Sibling bookings in the same household are common, usually on two different courses rather than one.

Al Quoz and Al Khail Gate

Mixed residential and industrial districts where evening traffic on Al Khail Road is the practical constraint on any travelling arrangement. Families here more often ask about shorter, more frequent sessions rather than one long weekly block.

Umm Suqeim and Al Manara

Close to Raffles World Academy and Emirates International School Jumeirah. Sessions often sit after 19:00 because of after-school activities on campus, which is the slot that in-home specialists are least willing to accept.

Deira, Al Mamzar and Al Nahda

Older, well-established districts whose Diploma candidates frequently cross the creek to school. An hour each way in peak traffic is an hour that could otherwise be spent on a statistics question set.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Deira International School's Diploma cohort is here, which means a relatively large AI SL group and a relatively small chance of individual attention on a specific weak strand during school hours.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Culture Village

Newer waterfront developments where households are spread across several schools in different directions. The nearest available tutor and the right tutor for this course are rarely the same person, which is the usual reason these families move to online sessions.

The Greens and Barsha Heights

Apartment living where a quiet desk is easier to find than a spare room for a visiting tutor. The variable worth testing in a trial lesson is the household connection rather than the space, especially in older towers.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai schools with large Standard Level maths cohorts

A big Diploma year group usually means AI SL runs as two or three timetabled classes, which is good for provision and poor for individual diagnosis. Students we support attend these schools; IB Gram has no relationship with any of them.

  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Raffles World Academy
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah

Dubai schools running the IB continuum into the Diploma

Students arriving from MYP without an external examination history often have no benchmark for timed written work, which the first marked paper supplies. Named as market context only, with no affiliation implied.

  • Uptown School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Jumeira Baccalaureate School
  • Greenfield International School
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills

Schools are named only as context about the Dubai education market. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform and holds no affiliation, partnership, endorsement, licence or accreditation from any school, school group, regulator or examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the course, the school and the last marked paper

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, the school, the year group, and the most recent marked work if any exists. A percentage on its own is hard to act on. A script with the lost marks visible tells a tutor in ten minutes what a conversation takes three sessions to uncover.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with a named specialist

A working session rather than a presentation. The student attempts questions from a strand they dislike, and you see how a wrong answer is handled. This is also where the calculator model is checked, since the menu paths for a chi-squared test or an amortisation calculation differ between devices.

  3. 03

    Score the five strands

Short timed tests across number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus, in the first fortnight. Scores and dates go on the scorecard. This is what stops the common pattern in which a tutor teaches whatever last week's homework happened to contain.

  4. 04

Start with the fastest strand, not the weakest

On this course the financial mathematics and the statistical templates usually return marks fastest, and a visible gain in three weeks changes a reluctant student's attitude to the arrangement. The slower work on modelling and justification runs alongside, where it has the term it needs rather than a fortnight.

  5. 05

Retest, then review against the baseline

Each taught strand is retested with comparable questions, not the same ones. At the end of the block a second full paper is sat under the conditions of the first. If the marks moved, the next block builds on it; if they did not, we change the tutor, the format or the level and say which.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the course, not to the subject

There are four Diploma mathematics courses and "IB maths tutor" usually means a tutor who has taught one of them. We match on Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level specifically, because the financial mathematics, the Voronoi work and the statistical testing are not content an Analysis tutor has necessarily ever taught.

Written templates for every statistical test

Most marks lost in this course's largest strand are lost in the writing, not the calculation. We drill a three-line template for each test type: what to state before touching the calculator, what to record from it, and what sentence follows. It transfers straight into the exploration, so the work pays twice.

The student's own calculator, every session

Both AI SL papers assume a graphic display calculator, and menu paths differ between models. Practising on a sibling's device or a classroom spare means losing marks to navigation under time pressure, which is indistinguishable in a results sheet from not knowing the mathematics. The model is checked in the trial lesson.

A scorecard a non-mathematician can audit

Five strands, dated scores, retests beside them. You do not need to follow the mathematics to see that a strand has not moved in six weeks, and that is exactly the question we want a parent to be able to ask. Encouragement is not management information and does not appear in the record.

We will tell you when fewer hours are enough

A student scoring a 5 with no content gap usually needs four to six sessions on pacing and mark-scheme habits, not a year of weekly tuition. Saying so costs us revenue and is the reason the diagnosis comes before the quote rather than after it. The same applies when the honest answer is a route conversation with the school.

Delivery stated before any payment

Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram operates no home visits in the UAE and keeps no office in the Emirates. If the hour you want is unavailable, you are told with the alternatives named, rather than being matched with whoever happens to be free that evening.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Is AI SL the easiest of the four Diploma maths courses?+

It is the least algebraically demanding, which is not the same thing. Both papers assume a graphic display calculator, roughly a third of the guide's hours sit in statistics and probability, and a large share of the marks depend on explaining what a result means rather than on producing it. Students who chose it to avoid writing are often disappointed. The course suits a student who reads data confidently and can justify a conclusion in a sentence, and it frustrates one who wants mathematics to be only calculation.

Is there any non-calculator paper in Applications and Interpretation?+

No. A graphic display calculator is assumed in both Standard Level papers, and in all three at Higher Level. That is the single biggest structural difference from Analysis and Approaches, where Paper 1 permits no calculator at all. The consequence is that the device becomes examinable equipment: knowing your own model's menu paths for a chi-squared test, a regression or an amortisation calculation is part of the preparation, and a student practising on a borrowed calculator will lose marks to navigation rather than to mathematics.

Does the tutor come to our villa in Dubai, or do lessons happen online?+

Online, over live video, one-to-one, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to any UAE address, and in-home tuition is a service we run only in India. Families search for "home tutor" so the page uses the phrase, but the delivery model is stated before money is discussed. On this course the gain is mostly scheduling: AI SL is the largest maths group in most Dubai Diploma cohorts, demand crowds into the same two early-evening hours, and removing travel is what makes a 16:30 or a 20:00 slot possible.

My daughter cannot do the compound interest and loan questions at all. Is that fixable quickly?+

Usually yes, and it is the first thing we would work on. Financial mathematics in this course is procedural: compound interest with different compounding periods, annuities, amortisation and outstanding balances. The errors are specific and repeatable, such as a quarterly rate applied as an annual one, or a payment entered with the wrong sign so the output looks plausible and is not. Three sessions of drill on her own calculator, plus a three-line written template for the comparison questions, typically moves a measurable number of marks.

Why does my son lose marks on statistics questions he gets right?+

Because the number is the smallest part of the mark. A chi-squared test for independence is marked for stating both hypotheses, naming the test, giving the degrees of freedom or p-value, comparing against the significance level and concluding in the context of the question. A p-value plus a verdict usually scores under half. The same applies to a correlation coefficient quoted without comment on strength and direction, or a regression prediction made outside the data range with no note that extrapolation is unreliable.

How much does Standard Level Applications tuition cost in Dubai?+

Published market rates for qualified online subject tutors run roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with IB specialists advertised from AED 200 and examination-year specialists to AED 450 and above in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table. In-home visits are quoted from about AED 180 to AED 500 with travel embedded, and monthly in-home packages of AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions are commonly advertised. Standard Level typically prices below Higher Level because more tutors can teach it. IB Gram quotes after a free trial.

Should my child have taken Analysis and Approaches instead?+

The signal worth reading is which part of the course they resent. A student who enjoys the statistics and the financial questions and struggles only with model justification is in the right course and needs writing work. A student who finds the statistics tedious and prefers algebraic manipulation may have suited Analysis better, though by DP2 that is usually academic. Switching is controlled by the school and IB registration, so raise it with the Diploma coordinator rather than deliberating for a term. The real obstacle in that direction is the non-calculator paper.

What is a Voronoi diagram and why is it in a maths syllabus?+

A Voronoi diagram divides a plane into regions according to which of several given points is nearest, and it is examined in Applications and Interpretation because it models genuine decisions: where to site a facility, which service area a location falls into, where the furthest point from all existing sites lies. Questions typically ask for perpendicular bisectors, the identification of a region, or the solution of a toxic-waste-dump problem. The content is self-contained, which makes it one of the quickest strands to secure once a student sits down with it.

How long is the exploration and what does it have to contain at SL?+

The IB recommends twelve to twenty pages, and the exploration is marked out of twenty against five criteria: presentation worth four, mathematical communication worth four, personal engagement worth three, reflection worth three, and use of mathematics worth six. Criterion E asks for mathematics commensurate with the level studied, so Standard Level mathematics used well scores better than Higher Level mathematics handled badly. The commonest failure on this course is collecting data first and looking for a question afterwards, which costs marks on engagement and reflection.

Can a tutor read my son's exploration draft, and where is the line?+

A tutor may read a submitted draft, comment against each of the five criteria, question the research question until it is answerable, point out where a statistical test does not support the claim being made, and explain what each criterion rewards. A tutor may not supply sentences, rework paragraphs, choose the data set or hand over analysis to be inserted. The exploration must be entirely the student's own work under IB academic-honesty rules. Our tutors keep a written note of the advice given, which is useful if the school asks what support was received.

We have eight weeks before the papers. What should we prioritise?+

The strands that return marks fastest, in this order: written templates for the statistical tests, the financial mathematics routines on the student's own calculator, then timed half-papers to fix pacing at roughly one mark a minute. Eight weeks is not enough to build modelling judgement from nothing, and a plan that pretends otherwise wastes the time available. A baseline paper in week one shows how many marks are genuinely recoverable. If that number is twenty or more the block is worth running, and if it is five we will say so.

Which Dubai schools do your Standard Level Applications students come from?+

From across the emirate: large Diploma cohorts at Deira International School, GEMS Wellington International School, Dubai International Academy Al Barsha and Raffles World Academy, and continuum schools including Uptown School, Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, Dwight School Dubai and Fairgreen International School. KHDA recorded 227 private schools in Dubai in 2024-25, with the IB accounting for 7 per cent of enrolment. Those schools are named as market context only; IB Gram has no affiliation with or endorsement from any of them.

What English and maths scores does the Ministry want for the American track?+

For the American curriculum track, the published requirement is at least 450 in the SAT Mathematics test, with English proficiency evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Those figures come from reporting on the Ministry's clarification of equivalency requirements. For the IB there is no points threshold we will publish without reading it on moe.gov.ae, and no tutoring is required for equivalency in any case.

Do two short sessions a week work better than one long one for this course?+

For many students on this course, yes. Statistics and financial mathematics are built from routines that need repeating rather than explaining twice, so two forty-five minute sessions often outperform one ninety-minute block. Shorter sessions also survive February better, when internal assessment deadlines across several subjects collide and a long weekly commitment is the first thing to be cancelled. Students whose weakness is modelling judgement usually do better with the longer format, because that work needs room to develop within a session.

If nobody is free in our slot, what actually happens?+

You are told before any payment, with the options named. Early-evening hours in Gulf Standard Time fill first across the whole city, so the alternatives are usually a different hour the same week, a short wait for a named tutor to free a slot, or a specialist in another time zone whose availability is stated plainly so you can judge whether it suits your household. None of the competitor pages we researched discloses a coverage limit at all, and several conceal non-UAE delivery behind an overseas phone number.

Score the five strands before you book a term

An IB DP Math AI SL home tutor in Dubai is worth hiring once you know which of the five strands is costing marks, and that takes a fortnight rather than a term. Short timed tests across number and algebra, functions, geometry, statistics and calculus produce a scorecard you can read without following the mathematics, and it usually shows that the fix is narrower than feared. Book a free trial lesson with an Applications and Interpretation Standard Level specialist, check the calculator and the setup, and decide from the evidence. Lessons are online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.
