IB DP Computer Science Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP computer science tutor in Dubai sits at the top of the local rate card, and the reason is supply rather than difficulty. Few schools in the emirate run the subject, cohorts are small, and the people who can teach both the written papers and the developed solution are correspondingly scarce. Published Dubai rates run from about AED 45 an hour for general tuition to AED 450 and above for a Diploma specialist. Lessons are one-to-one, live over video, and the first is free.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A thin market prices differently, and that is the whole story here

Computer Science is the Diploma subject where Dubai families most often find that the cheap option does not exist. For Economics or Biology a parent can choose between a university student at AED 45 to 65 an hour, a qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300, and a Diploma specialist in the AED 200 to 450 band published on Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table. For Computer Science the bottom of that ladder is largely occupied by people who can program but have never read the subject guide, and hiring them costs a term before the mismatch becomes obvious.

The reason is arithmetic. Dubai has 227 private schools and seventeen curricula, with International Baccalaureate programmes accounting for roughly 7% of private enrolment in 2024-25. Computer Science is an optional Group 4 choice within that minority, so a given Diploma school may run it with eight candidates across two years, or not at all. The teaching population follows the cohort size. That is why a specialist in this subject commands a rate closer to the top of the band, and why the honest advice to a Dubai family is to pay for fewer hours of the right person rather than more hours of the wrong one.

Knowing that changes how you buy. In a thin market the expensive mistakes are made on diagnosis, not on price. A student who is actually losing marks on pseudocode and trace questions does not need another term of project help, and a student whose documentation is weak does not need more programming practice. One marked paper and one look at the solution documentation tells you which problem you have, and in this subject the two problems have almost nothing in common beyond the word computing.

There is also a verification layer worth settling early. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, issued free of charge for two years, and nobody should be describing themselves as approved by the IB, KHDA or anyone else. In a market where a strong developer can plausibly present themselves as a Diploma tutor, the two questions that separate the professionals are what they have taught and what they will not do with a student's own code.

So this page is organised around that market rather than around the syllabus. It starts with why the rate card looks the way it does in Dubai, then shows how to tell Computer Science apart from Digital Society before you pay anybody, then maps the components so the first twenty hours go in the right order. After that come the parts of the course that are not programming, how a solution review works over video, the six screening questions worth asking, the calendar counted backwards, what we do when nobody suitable is free, and the mathematics and equivalency layer behind a computing application.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Computer Science belongs to the final two years, but the thinking it assesses starts much earlier in the IB continuum, in design cycles and systematic investigation rather than in syntax. Here is what each programme a Dubai school runs contributes to a Diploma Computer Science grade.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Design is the relevant ancestor, not a coding club. Its cycle of inquiring, developing ideas, creating a solution and evaluating against self-authored criteria is almost exactly the shape of the Diploma developed solution. Students who worked that cycle honestly arrive able to write success criteria and test against them, which is the single most transferable habit in the subject.

Dubai MYP cohorts vary widely in how much programming they meet, from a full text-based language to block-based work only. Departments here report the same DP1 split every year: students who can build something but cannot document why they built it that way, and students who can write about design but have never debugged anything of their own.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Computer Science sits in Group 4 and runs across both Diploma years at Standard or Higher Level. Candidates sit written papers covering the core, an option topic chosen by the school, and submit an independently developed computational solution with substantial documentation. Higher Level adds further content and a case study published ahead of the examination. Confirm the current structure and weightings in the IB subject guide at ibo.org.

Provision in Dubai is patchy by design rather than by neglect: a school with a small Group 4 cohort will often offer Physics and Biology and leave Computer Science to a handful of candidates or to Digital Society. That is why a Dubai parent should establish which subject is actually on the timetable before hiring anybody, because the two courses need different tutors.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Computer Science is a natural pairing with a technology-focused career study, and a CP candidate sits the same written papers and submits the same developed solution, so the subject support needed does not differ.

Few Dubai schools run the Career-related Programme, so a CP candidate taking Computer Science is often alone on that route in the building. The practical impact is scheduling rather than content: the career-related study and the reflective project land in the same months as the developed solution, and something has to give unless the calendar is planned in DP1.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Computer Science is a core syllabus, a school-chosen option topic, and one substantial piece of independent work. Below is what a tutor covers with a Dubai candidate, and where the marks go missing in each part.

System fundamentals and planning

Standard and Higher Level core

Planning a computerised system, change management, compatibility, usability, and the roles of stakeholders. It is the least technical part of the course and often the worst answered, because candidates who enjoy programming skim it and then meet it as a long-answer question worth real marks.

Computer organisation

Standard and Higher Level core

The architecture layer: the processor, primary memory, the machine instruction cycle, binary representation and logic gates. Marks are lost on precision rather than understanding, especially on describing the fetch-decode-execute sequence in the order the mark scheme expects.

Networks

Standard and Higher Level core

Network types, standards, the layered model, data packets, transmission media, compression and wireless security. Dubai candidates often answer these questions from general technology knowledge rather than from the syllabus vocabulary, which caps the mark even when the explanation is broadly right.

Computational thinking and problem-solving

Standard and Higher Level core

Abstraction, decomposition, algorithm design, flow charts, pseudocode, trace tables and standard algorithms on arrays and collections. This is where the gap between a capable programmer and a high-scoring candidate is widest, and where most of a Standard Level repair plan goes.

Abstract data structures

Higher Level only

Linked lists, stacks, queues, binary trees, recursion and the reasoning about efficiency that goes with them. Recursion in particular rewards hand-traced practice over code-first experimentation, and students who learned to program by building apps often find this the hardest content in the course.

The option topic

Chosen by the school

The school selects one option from the available list, and the choice changes revision entirely. Establish which one your child's department teaches before hiring, because an excellent tutor for one option can be learning the material alongside your child in another.

The developed computational solution

Internal assessment, both levels

An independently built product with a real client or stated need, plus documentation covering planning, design, development, a demonstration of functionality and evaluation. The documentation carries the marks that students assume the code carries, which is the commonest misunderstanding in the whole subject.

The Higher Level case study

Higher Level only

A scenario published ahead of the examination, requiring independent research into a technical field and the vocabulary that goes with it. It is the one component that can be prepared almost a year in advance and the one most often left until the final weeks.

Pseudocode and trace tables

Both written papers

The examination uses its own pseudocode conventions rather than any production language, and traces must be completed by hand in a specified format. Strong programmers lose marks here routinely, because fluency in Python is not fluency in the examination's notation.

Academic honesty with code

Across the course

Library use must be acknowledged, borrowed code must be attributed, and the student's own contribution must be identifiable. The arrival of code-generating tools has made this both easier to breach and easier to detect, and the school's own policy is the binding document.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Computer Science support splits into three jobs with different price behaviour: written-paper technique, solution supervision, and the Higher Level case study. Buying them as one undifferentiated weekly hour is why some Dubai families finish a year of tuition with the same mark they started with.

Written-paper technique, weekly

Sixty to ninety minutes a week spent on the parts of the course that are examined on paper: pseudocode in the examination's own notation, hand-traced algorithms, architecture, networks and the long-answer questions on system planning. Sat-then-marked rather than taught-then-set, so the hour goes on correction rather than on writing.

  • A timed question marked before the session, every session
  • Traces completed by hand, in the required format, not run in an interpreter
  • A running list of the three recurring errors costing the most marks

Solution supervision, by milestone

Four to six sessions placed at the points where a developed solution goes wrong: scoping with a real client, writing success criteria that can actually be tested, a design review before development starts, a documentation review, and the functionality demonstration. Billed by milestone because solution work moves in bursts around school deadlines.

  • Client and scope tested for viability before a month is spent on it
  • Criteria read against the draft documentation with the descriptor open
  • The student writes the code and the documentation; the tutor reviews and questions

Higher Level case-study block

Three to five sessions once the scenario is published, spent on the independent research the case demands: the technical vocabulary, the underlying mechanisms, and the extended-response practice that turns research into marks. Starting this early is the cheapest decision available in Higher Level Computer Science, and almost nobody makes it.

  • A vocabulary and mechanism map built before any essay practice
  • Two timed extended responses marked against the band descriptors
  • Reading list drawn from primary technical sources, cited properly

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Why Computer Science sits at the top of the Dubai rate card

The price of tutoring tracks the depth of the local supply, and in Dubai the supply for Diploma Computer Science is thin. Dubai's private sector had 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate programmes taking roughly 7% of enrolment. Computer Science is an optional Group 4 choice inside that share, so the pool of people who have actually taught the course here is a fraction of the pool who have taught Diploma Biology or Mathematics. Rates reflect that, and they should.

What makes this subject distinctive is that the apparent supply is much larger than the real supply. Dubai has a substantial technology workforce, and a competent software engineer can reasonably describe themselves as able to help with school computing. Many can. What most cannot do is mark a long-answer question on system planning against the band descriptors, teach the examination's pseudocode conventions rather than a production language, or tell a student which parts of their documentation will not earn credit. That is the gap families discover in month two.

The practical consequence is counter-intuitive. In a thin market, buying fewer hours from the right person is cheaper than buying more hours from the wrong one, because the wrong purchase leaves the actual problem untouched while the calendar runs down. A parent who spends AED 400 an hour for six well-diagnosed hours usually spends less and gains more than one who spends AED 150 an hour for thirty hours of general programming help, and the second family arrives at the mock examinations with the same marks and no time.

Computer Science or Digital Society: establish which one before hiring

A surprising number of Dubai enquiries for a Computer Science tutor turn out to concern a different subject. Several schools in the emirate offer Digital Society rather than Computer Science, or offer both and let the Group 4 or Group 3 block decide. The two courses share vocabulary and share nothing else: one is a technical course with programming, algorithms and an independently built product; the other examines the social and ethical dimensions of digital systems through inquiry and evidence. A tutor for one is not a tutor for the other.

The check takes a minute and saves a term. Look at the subject name on the school report, not at what the student calls the lesson. Ask whether there is a programming language in use and which one. Ask whether the internally assessed work is a built product with documentation or a research inquiry. Ask whether the department chose an option topic. Those four answers identify the course unambiguously, and they are worth confirming with the Diploma coordinator in writing if there is any doubt.

It matters financially as well as pedagogically. Digital Society sits closer to the AED 150 to 300 qualified-subject-tutor band in Dubai because the supply of capable humanities and inquiry teachers is deeper. Computer Science sits in the specialist band for the reasons set out above. A family quoted a specialist rate for a Digital Society candidate is overpaying, and a family who hires a Digital Society tutor for a Computer Science candidate has bought something that cannot teach abstract data structures or review a developed solution.

03

A cost map of the components, so you can buy in the right order

Diagnosis decides the budget in this subject more than anywhere else, because the components fail independently. A student can write excellent code and score poorly on paper. A student can ace the architecture questions and submit documentation that earns half the marks available. The two problems need different tutors on different schedules, and a provider who does not ask which one you have will sell you the one they prefer teaching.

Buy in the order that respects the calendar. The Higher Level case study comes first in time, because it is published well ahead of the examination and preparing it early costs three to five hours while preparing it late costs twice that and competes with everything else. Solution milestones come next, pinned to the school's draft deadlines. Written-paper technique is continuous and the easiest thing to add or stop. Core content gaps should be closed in the term they appear, which is a two-to-four hour purchase per topic.

One further caution on the solution. The marks that students assume sit in the code mostly sit in the documentation: planning, design decisions, testing, the recorded demonstration of functionality and the evaluation against criteria the student set. A tutor who spends every session improving the program and none on the documentation is improving the part that is not being assessed directly. Ask explicitly how many of the planned sessions will be spent reading documentation rather than reading code, and ask for that answer as a number rather than as a reassurance.

04

The parts of the course that are not programming at all

Parents hire a Computer Science tutor imagining code, and a large share of the written examination is not about code. System fundamentals asks about planning a computerised system, stakeholder roles, compatibility issues and change management, in long-answer form. Computer organisation asks for the machine instruction cycle and binary representation in the order the mark scheme expects. Networks asks for syllabus vocabulary rather than a general grasp of how Wi-Fi works. None of this is taught by building projects, and all of it is examined.

This is where the strongest programmers in a Dubai cohort quietly lose their grade. A student who has shipped a working app can explain what a server does in practical terms and still fail to use the layered-model language the question requires. A student who writes elegant Python can get a trace table wrong because the examination's notation differs from the language they think in, or because they ran the algorithm mentally rather than filling in every column at every step as the format demands.

The repair is specific and quick, which is the good news in an expensive subject. Hand-traced practice in the required format, long-answer questions marked against the descriptors, and a vocabulary discipline that insists on syllabus terms rather than industry shorthand. Six to ten hours spread across a term usually moves this part of the paper substantially, and it is the work least likely to happen if you hire for programming help, because a working engineer will naturally gravitate to the code and away from the parts of the paper they find trivial.

05

Reviewing a developed solution over video without touching the student's work

The question Dubai parents ask most about online delivery in this subject is whether a tutor can really help with a build they cannot sit beside. The answer is that screen sharing is better for this than sitting beside it, for one reason: the student stays on the keyboard. When a tutor is physically next to a struggling student, the path of least resistance is for the tutor to take over and fix it. Over video the student types, the tutor watches and asks, and the student is the one who makes the change.

A good review session has a shape. The student shares the editor and runs the program while describing what they expect to happen. The tutor asks what the success criterion for this feature was, in the student's own words, and whether the test the student just ran actually proves it. Where it fails, the tutor asks what the student would check first, and then narrows the search by questioning rather than by reading the code aloud. The student records the outcome in their own documentation during the session.

This is also where the academic-honesty line is kept visibly. A tutor does not edit the student's files, does not supply blocks of code, and does not take the keyboard. Library use and anything borrowed must be acknowledged in the student's own documentation, and if a code-generating tool has been used anywhere the school's policy governs it and declaring it is the only safe route. A session recording helps everybody here: it shows exactly who did what, which is a reassurance for the student as much as for the parent.

06

Six checks on a Computer Science tutor that cost nothing

In a market where the apparent supply exceeds the real supply, screening matters more than negotiating. The six questions below take ten minutes, cost nothing, and are better than any amount of reading reviews. They are built around what this subject specifically requires: the examination's own conventions, the option topic, the documentation that carries the internal marks, and the honesty boundary around a student's own code.

Pay particular attention to the option topic question. Because the school chooses the option, a tutor can be genuinely excellent and still be learning your child's option material a week ahead of them. That can be acceptable if it is disclosed and priced honestly, and it is a problem if it is concealed. The same applies to level: Higher Level abstract data structures and recursion are the content a generalist most often cannot teach, and the case study needs someone who has prepared candidates for one before.

Treat examiner claims with care. No tutor should be presented as a current IB examiner without evidence, and examiner status must never be implied to give access to marking, grade boundaries or unseen paper content. Nor should any provider describe itself as approved, accredited or licensed by the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education; IB Gram holds none of those and says so. What a tutor can legitimately offer is experience, a method, and a marked script you can read, which is a stronger basis for a decision than any badge on a website.

The Computer Science year counted backwards

No competitor page in this search publishes a calendar, which is odd, because in this subject the calendar is the budget. The developed solution and the Higher Level case study are both time-bound tasks whose cost rises steeply the later they start, and both are governed by school deadlines rather than by the examination session. Get those dates from the coordinator in DP1 and the plan more or less writes itself.

Work from the end backwards rather than from today forwards. The written papers are the last thing that happens. Before them come the mocks, which are the best diagnostic any family gets for free. Before those comes the school's internal submission window for the solution, which in Dubai schools is usually weeks ahead of the IB's own deadline. Before that come the solution milestones, and before everything comes the case study for Higher Level candidates, which is published far enough in advance to be prepared calmly.

On IB dates specifically, be sceptical of any tutoring site that prints them, including this one. UAE schools sit the May session and results reach candidates during the summer that follows, but windows change year to year and the IB is the publisher. Confirm every date with your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. For a sibling sitting Cambridge or Pearson qualifications in the same house, note that Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and that using the wrong zone timetable is the family's risk, not the board's.

Coverage, fallback and how the lessons actually run

Specialist coverage in this subject is the thinnest of any Group 4 course, so we would rather be explicit about it than quietly allocate whoever is free. A Standard Level request on a weekday evening is normally matched within a few days. A Higher Level request that also needs a specific option topic, in the fortnight before a mock series, is the hardest booking in the Dubai calendar and sometimes cannot be filled at the hour requested. No competing page in this search discloses a coverage limit at all, which does not mean they never reach one.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Sessions are recorded, so a student can rewatch a trace or a design discussion rather than relying on notes taken while thinking. Screen sharing runs in both directions for code and for documentation, and a shared whiteboard handles logic gates, trees and traces. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a home anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India, and this page says so rather than leaving it to be discovered.

In-home tuition does exist in this market, published at AED 180 to 350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table with some home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500, and for most subjects the premium buys presence. For this one it also narrows the field severely: a family in Arabian Ranches hiring locally is choosing among Diploma Computer Science specialists willing to drive inland for a 6.30pm start, which in a subject this thinly staffed may be a list of nobody. Online, the same family is choosing among everyone who teaches the course at that hour.

Mathematics, universities and the UAE equivalency layer

Families often assume Diploma Computer Science is the gatekeeper for a computing degree. Usually it is not. Most computer science programmes specify mathematics rather than computing, commonly Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and many will accept a student who never studied computing at school at all. The subject is valuable, and it is rarely the binding requirement. A student taking Standard Level mathematics and aiming at a competitive computing degree has a mathematics problem, and more Computer Science tuition will not fix it.

Inside the UAE there is an additional process to understand. The Ministry of Education operates certificate equivalency and the requirements differ by curriculum. On the British track, students must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. On the American track, English can be evidenced with IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing, and mathematics with at least 450 in SAT Mathematics.

For the IB specifically, no points threshold should be taken from a tutoring page. No IB equivalency figure in this project has been read on a Ministry of Education page, so the correct answer is to check moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation channel directly. Equivalency is completed by the family and the receiving institution. It is not something IB Gram performs, guarantees or speeds up, and tutoring is not a requirement for it. Any page implying otherwise is inventing urgency around a regulatory procedure that has its own published rules.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Location changes two things for a Computer Science family in Dubai: which schools near you actually offer the subject, and what time a session can start once the school run is finished. Here are the areas the enquiries come from.

Dubai Internet City, Barsha Heights and Al Barsha

The part of the emirate where a student is most likely to have a parent working in software and least likely to need motivating. The requests from this band are usually about the written papers rather than the solution, because the coding is already fluent and the pseudocode notation is not.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several universities and technology employers, which makes finding a client for the developed solution unusually straightforward. Sessions here often start at five, and the common ask is documentation discipline rather than programming help.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills Estate

Deep Diploma provision within a short drive, and the band where Higher Level Computer Science is most likely to be offered at all. Ninety-minute sessions are the norm, because a timed paper and its read-back does not fit into sixty minutes.

Business Bay, Downtown Dubai and DIFC

Apartment living, short school runs and plenty of small firms within reach for a solution client. Candidates from this band are often the only Higher Level Computer Science student in their year, which makes an outside specialist the only discussion partner they have.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

Later bus arrivals push a realistic start past half past six, and the Diploma cohorts here are smaller. This is the band where Computer Science is most often taught by a teacher whose main subject is something else, which shows up in the option topic first.

Arabian Ranches, The Springs and Motor City

Forty-minute school runs at the wrong hour and almost no local specialist supply for this subject. Families here were buying online tuition for Computer Science long before it became ordinary elsewhere, usually in a weekend morning slot.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the course, the level and the option topic

Before anything else, settle three facts in writing: whether the subject is Computer Science or Digital Society, which level your child sits, and which option topic the department chose. Those three answers determine who can usefully teach your child, and getting them wrong is the most expensive mistake available in this subject.

  2. 02

A free diagnostic hour with a marked script and a documentation look

The first lesson is free, one per student, with no card details taken. It produces two things: a timed written question marked against the descriptors, and a short read of the solution documentation as it stands. Those two artefacts tell you which of the independent problems you actually have.

  3. 03

A written plan ordered by the calendar, with a total

The plan states which component comes first and why, how many sessions, how long each runs, and what the total comes to. In this subject the ordering follows the calendar rather than the weakest mark, because the case study and the solution both get dearer the later they start.

  4. 04

Review monthly, and stop when the plan is done

Each month brings the marked work and a short written note on what moved. If the marks are flat after six weeks of consistent attendance, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan changes or ends. Stopping costs nothing beyond the sessions taught, and plans in this subject should finish rather than renew indefinitely.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced against the published market, with the scarcity explained

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider that published it. Three of the six pages competing for this search publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, so there is nothing to compare a quote against. We also say why this subject prices high in Dubai, which is supply rather than difficulty.

Matched on the option topic, not on general programming ability

Because the school chooses the option, a tutor can be excellent and still be the wrong match. We confirm the option and the level before suggesting anybody, and if the person who fits is not free at your hour we say so rather than filling the slot with whoever is.

Documentation treated as the component it is

The marks students assume sit in the code largely sit in the planning, design, testing, recorded functionality and evaluation. Plans here state how many sessions go on documentation rather than on debugging, because a tutor who only improves the program is improving the part that is not directly assessed.

The keyboard stays with the student

Over video the student types and the tutor questions, which is the right way round for this subject and happens to be the honest one. We do not edit a student's files, supply blocks of code or take the keyboard, and sessions are recorded so it is clear who did what.

Online delivery, because the local pool for this subject is small

There are no home visits in the UAE. For a widely taught subject that is a convenience; for Diploma Computer Science it is the difference between choosing from the specialists willing to drive to your community and choosing from everyone who teaches the course at that hour.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why does Computer Science cost more per hour than Biology or Economics in Dubai?+

Supply, not difficulty. Dubai had 227 private schools and seventeen curricula in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate programmes taking roughly 7% of private enrolment, and Computer Science is an optional Group 4 choice inside that share. A school may run it with a handful of candidates across two years or not at all, so the number of people who have genuinely taught the course here is small. Published Dubai rates put specialist exam-year tuition at AED 200 to 450 and above on Bestimate's 2026 table, and this subject sits towards the top of that band for the same reason any scarce specialism does.

Is my child taking Computer Science or Digital Society?+

Check before hiring, because the courses need different tutors. Look at the subject name on the school report rather than what the lesson is called at home, then ask four questions: is a programming language in use and which one, is the internally assessed work a built product with documentation or a research inquiry, has the department chosen an option topic, and is there a Higher Level case study. Computer Science answers yes to the programming and the built product. Digital Society does not. Confirm with the Diploma coordinator in writing if there is any doubt at all.

Which component should we spend the first five hours on?+

Follow the calendar, not the lowest mark. For a Higher Level candidate whose case study has been published, those first hours belong there, because it is the cheapest component to prepare early and the dearest to prepare late. For a DP1 candidate the first hours belong to scoping the developed solution with a real client and writing testable success criteria, since a solution with an unworkable scope is the most expensive problem to discover in month four. For a DP2 candidate after the mocks, it is written-paper technique: pseudocode and hand-traced algorithms in the examination's own format.

How much of the Computer Science grade has nothing to do with writing code?+

A great deal of it, which is why strong programmers often underperform. The written papers examine system planning, computer organisation, networks, computational thinking and the chosen option topic, and much of that is answered in prose using syllabus vocabulary. The internally assessed component is marked substantially on documentation: planning, design decisions, testing, the recorded demonstration of functionality and the evaluation against the student's own criteria. Confirm the current weightings in the IB subject guide at ibo.org. The practical point stands regardless of the exact percentages: a plan that only improves the program is improving the part that is least directly assessed.

What should a tutor do when a program will not compile during a session?+

Ask questions and keep the student on the keyboard. A good tutor asks what the student expected, what the error message actually says, what they would check first, and then narrows the search by questioning rather than by reading the code aloud or taking control. The student makes every change and records the outcome in their own documentation during the session. What a tutor must not do is edit the student's files, paste in a working version, or tidy the code afterwards. Session recordings help here: they show exactly who did what, which protects the student as much as the parent.

What internet speed and setup does a coding lesson over video need?+

Less than families expect. A stable home connection anywhere in Dubai handles two-way screen sharing comfortably, and the practical requirements are a second screen or a reasonably large one, a wired keyboard the student is used to, and their own editor already installed and working. Headphones matter more than bandwidth, because a session of debugging involves a lot of precise talking. We ask that the project opens and runs before the session starts, since ten minutes of environment troubleshooting at a specialist rate is the least useful money in the plan.

How do we test a Computer Science tutor in a free first lesson?+

Ask for two things: a timed written question marked before the session, and a short read of the solution documentation as it currently stands. Then look at what comes back. A specialist names the band the written answer sits in, identifies which syllabus vocabulary was missing, and says which documentation sections will not earn credit as written. A general programmer comments on the quality of the code and suggests a package. The marked script and the documentation note also tell you which of the subject's independent problems you have, which is what determines the budget.

Is a university computing student a cheap substitute for a Diploma specialist?+

For one job, yes. A capable undergraduate at the AED 45 to 150 end of the Dubai market can teach a language, explain a data structure, and sit alongside a student debugging. What they generally cannot do is mark a long-answer question on system planning against the band descriptors, teach the examination's pseudocode conventions rather than a production language, or tell a student which parts of their documentation earn nothing. If your diagnosis is that the programming itself is weak, that tier is good value. If the problem is written-paper marks or documentation, it is a term spent on the wrong thing.

What does it cost to prepare for the Higher Level case study properly?+

Three to five sessions if started soon after publication, which at the AED 200 to 450 specialist band published for Dubai is roughly AED 600 to 2,250. Started in the final term it typically takes twice as long and competes with revision in five other subjects, so the same marks cost more and arrive less reliably. The work itself is independent research into a technical field: mapping the vocabulary and the underlying mechanisms, reading primary technical sources and citing them, then two timed extended responses marked against the descriptors. It is the most predictable purchase in Higher Level Computer Science.

Why do strong programmers lose marks on pseudocode questions?+

Because the examination uses its own notation and its own trace format, and fluency in Python is not fluency in either. A student who thinks in a modern language will write a correct algorithm in the wrong conventions, or will run a trace mentally and record only the final answer when the format requires every column filled at every step. Neither is a conceptual failure, which is why the repair is fast: hand-traced practice in the required format, marked, repeated. Six to ten hours spread across a term usually moves this part of the paper more than any other intervention available.

Should my child switch programming language to match the examination?+

No, because the written papers do not examine a specific production language. They use their own pseudocode, which has to be learned as a notation in its own right. For the developed solution the language should be whichever one the student can actually build and debug in, with the school's guidance, since a solution half-built in an unfamiliar language is a worse outcome than a complete one in a familiar language. The useful switch is not of language but of practice: traces and algorithm design done by hand, on paper, in the examination's format, rather than typed into an interpreter.

How many hours does solution documentation take to supervise?+

Four to six sessions placed at milestones rather than booked weekly. One to test the client and scope before a month is committed, one on success criteria that can actually be tested, one as a design review before development goes far, one or two reading the documentation against each criterion with the descriptor open, and one on the recorded functionality demonstration and the evaluation. Milestones rather than a standing slot, because solution work moves in bursts around school deadlines and a weekly booking bills you for the quiet weeks. The student writes every word of it; the tutor reads, questions and points at criteria.

Is a tutor worth paying for if the school has no Computer Science specialist?+

That is the situation where outside help changes the most, and it is not unusual in Dubai schools with small Group 4 cohorts. A student taught by a non-specialist is typically fine on whichever part of the course that teacher knows and thin on the rest, most often the option topic and the Higher Level extension content. The plan in that case is diagnostic first and broad second: find out what has actually been taught, then close the gaps in the order the calendar demands. Expect more hours than a student in a well-staffed department needs, and ask for a plan with a total.

Does a computing degree require Higher Level mathematics as well?+

Frequently yes, and more often than it requires Computer Science itself. Most computing programmes specify mathematics, commonly Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and many accept applicants who never studied computing at school. So a student taking Standard Level mathematics and aiming at a competitive computing degree has a mathematics problem, and additional Computer Science tuition will not solve it. Read the published entry requirements for the specific universities on your child's list before spending anything, then talk to the school's counsellor about the subject combination rather than about tutoring.

What happens to our plan if the option topic changes after we start?+

Schools very rarely change an option mid-course, but teaching staff do change, and with them sometimes the depth of coverage. If the option taught turns out not to be the one we planned around, the plan is rewritten and the hours move; you do not pay for sessions aimed at the wrong material. This is also why we ask for the option in writing from the coordinator at the start rather than relying on what a student believes it is. Mistaken option information is the most common cause of wasted revision in this subject.

What does a UAE university need to see from an IB student applying for computing?+

Two separate things: the university's own entry requirements, and Ministry of Education certificate equivalency. The requirements differ by curriculum, and the British-track rules are published: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. For the IB, do not accept a points threshold from any tutoring site. Check moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation channel directly, because the figure circulating online has not been verified against a ministry source.

Confirm the option, then buy fewer hours of the right person

If your child sits Diploma Computer Science at a Dubai school, start by confirming three things in writing: the subject, the level and the option topic the department teaches. Then take the free first lesson and ask for a marked written question and a short read of the solution documentation, because those two artefacts identify which problem you are actually paying to fix. One free lesson per student, no card details taken. Lessons run live and one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time, recorded, with screen sharing in both directions; there are no home visits in the UAE, and that service runs only in India.
